Happy International Games Month to the artist who made the "Vibrant Textured" Canva art for Sketchify back when it was International Games Day. You're the real MVP, and your art has been a staple in my event flyers for years.
iREAD's Summer Reading Program 2025 theme is Level Up at Your Library, and before they announces the official artists of the year they were using your d20. My coworker was disappointed at the art, expecting something more like the initially advertised game piece, and I assured her I knew where to get pieces in that style.
o7

EDIT: FACT CHECK! I was wrong, iREAD used a different d20 with similar colors in the same order with the same texturing and the die positioned numerically in the exact same way. What the fuck?
#But why do your chess pieces use different hex codes by default?#Also no shade to the 2025 SRP artists. I was very excited to recognize Carey Pietsch of F@tT fan art and TAZ graphic novels!#My coworker is disappointed in everything.#personal#International Games Month#International Games Day

sunday x reader - halovian courtship
warning: no spoilers, gn! reader, pining/soft sunday, Sunday info dumping as usual
summary: where Sunday will do everything except confess, and you just think heâs emotionally stunted.
a/n: i read about birds for this

halovian courting rituals
1. Gift giving. Like their close bird companions, Halovians participate in 'nuptial gifts,' a form of gift giving to a potential partner.
You were walking into the Oak Family Headquarters, Dewlight Pavilion, sent to deliver some letters. Although, youâve been here before, it was still a bit nerve wracking to be in such a place, undetached from your usual position as a lower end employee.
The entrance to Oak Family Headâs office was right in front of you. You bite your lip, shifting the documents to your other arm and knock.
âNightingale Famil-â
The door swings open. The family head holding the door stands to the side.
âAh,â Sunday says your name, âitâs you.â
Your eyes widen, blinking a couple times. He remembers me?
âYes, itâs nice to see you again Mr. Sunday. Iâve come with documents from the Nightingale family detailing a new plan for the dreamscape.â
He looks a bit disappointed?
He chuckles, then calls out to a lone employee, âyouâre dismissed for today, Iâll take care of the rest.â
The Oak employee dips his head and leaves. Watching him leave fills a pit in your stomach.
âMr. Sunday, is something wrong?â
Sunday sits up suddenly, âOh, no. Not at all.â Itâs that movement that makes you realize that heâs been fidgeting with something in his lapâŚIs he always like this?
âI guess I was just a bit surprised,â he smiles, looking down to the side. You caught him.
âSurprised? To see me?â Although Sunday and you have met a few times. It was always business, just like nowâwell maybe he did stare a bit intently at you before, but something really was different this time!
He looks up and sheepishly slides a box across the table. âTake it asâŚbeing a good part of The Family.â
For a few moments, your eyes set upon him. What is he planning? Itâs a small box. Almost nothing could fit in there. You lift the top up.
You gasp. Earrings worth more than your entire lifeâs salary. You slam it shut.
âM-Mr. Sunday. This really isnât necessary. I justââ you ramble on. Sunday places his gloved hand on yours.
âPlease, take it.â
Looking into his eyes, you realize that putting up a fight with the Oak Head wonât get you anywhere. You reluctantly take the box.
2. Preening. Similar to nature, touching a Halovian's wings is an intimate gesture to show one's interest in a romantic partner. Someone should never touch a Halovian's wings without asking!
Soon after, you come across Sunday again. This time at the Nightingale Familyâs institution. You were putting away blueprints, plans and documents your coworkers left laying around haphazardly. When a familiar voice calls out to you.
âGood evening. Working hard, I see.â
âMr. Sunday?â
He approached you, then looked around the room. He seemed to realize the situation you were in and scorned your coworkers. He mumbled something about you and moving to the âOak Family.â As he spoke his wings were fluttering. They looked smooth and soft.
âYouâve been staring at my wings. Do they interest you that much?â He chuckles.
âWell, they are very pretty butââ
âWould you like to touch them?â A light blush spreads across his face. Despite that, he seemed perfectly poised. His hands clasped behind his back, standing straight and looking right at you.
âI-is that alright?â tumbles from your lips. You hesitantly reach out.
âI wouldnât have offered otherwise.â
Upon touching them, Sundayâs wings twitched away from you before settling down. The feathers are soft and plush. Some are darker in color while others are more pale. Theyâre surprisingly fluffy. A bit like fur but more delicate.
The blush darkened, his gaze shifted off to the wall. His composure utterly broken, his hands fidgeted behind his back.
âDid you know that birds groom each other as a social activity? It occurs betweenâŚma-members of a flock.â He sputters. What is he saying?
Your fingers stroking his feathers create a flutter within his stomach. He leans into the touch. Taking that as a sign to continue, you reach farther up, a light brush into the coverts of his feathers. Sunday gasps and pulls away.
ââŚYou must take good care of them. Are all Halovian wings soft like yours?â
He wishes that moment would never end.
3. Song. During courtship rituals many birds of different species tend to sing and dance. While that is popular among Halovian people, some may chose show affection through instruments instead.
One day, a notice appears at your door. Upon examining it you realize itâs an invitation from Sunday, instructing you to his office within the Dewlight Pavilion.
Could it be about the documents you sent him last time? You wrack your brain for any possible explanation. He had been acting weirder than usual.
Heat build up in your face upon recalling Sundayâs recent appreciation for you. The earrings that are far too expensive to wear anywhere, and even worseâyou bury your face into your hands. In a profound display of unprofessionalism, he let you touch his wings.
Still, every muscle in your body jittered with excitement, even though it shouldnât.
⍠⏠âŠ
Suddenly, the closer you got, the more the hallway echoed with the sound of a violin. Slowly, you carefully stepped towards the sound, till you found its source.
Sunday was playing the violin. You couldnât help but freeze where you were and watch him. He truly did look like angel. As he drew his bow across the strings, the light from the window shined down on him. His hair reflected the light appearing almost white. Was he always this beautiful?
Abruptly, he stands up, âYouâre early. Sorry, I didnât hear you come in.â
âSorry, I didnât mean to startle you,â you closed the door behind you, âI didnât know you could play. What song was it?â
He places the violin down on his table and approached you, âItâs âSalut dâamor,â one of the first pieces I learned how to play,â Sunday put his hand behind his back, âthe dream master was the one that taught me.â
âIt was very pretty, I can tell youâve been playing for a long time.â
âThank you.â A light blush spreads onto his cheeks, but itâs gone before you can realize it.
A loud silence sweeps the room. The two of you avert your eyes. This side of Sunday feels so different from what youâve been told. He always maintains a professional barrier. But if so, what was this?
Sunday calls your name, âhow do you feel about me?â
âWhat?â The question is so out of the blue, you mustâve heard wrong, âI think youâre a nice guyââ
âI meant as a partner, I thought you knew. Was I not obvious enough?â He mumbles over the last sentence.
âIâwellââ you stumble over your words. He was serious. The earrings, the wing touching, the invitation. You dismissed it as him buttering you up. The âmost handsome man in Penaconyâ as delegated by the latest magazines, had feelings for you?
Your face felt so hot, you felt as if you could combust into flames at any moment, âI feel the same.â
His expression softened. âThatâs a relief, I donât have to cancel those reservations then.â
âReservations?! Mr. Sunday-â
âJust Sunday. Iâll pick you up later then,â he smiled, then placed his hand near your ear, as if looking for something, âOh, but this time remember to wear those earrings.â
a/n #2: soft Sunday is real, did u see how protective he was of Robin in the quest? i need more hoyo. feed my delusion

I was talking to my coworker today about my deep belief that more media should be finite. Some of the most disappointing endings in TV happen because there wasnât an end goal that the plot was working toward all along. Ironically this came up because I was lamenting Arcane only being two seasons, a decision I admire, respect, and mourn.
I was juxtaposing How I Met Your Mother with The Office. The whole conceit of HIMYM is that the story is supposed to be leading toward this woman who haunts the narrative with her absence but because they set out with no end goal the finale is ultimately so unsatisfying. Nine seasons of build up for someone who could never have lived up to the hype because she wasnât chosen beforehand or included early on.
Contrasted the The Office which was nine seasons that only ever claimed to be about the daily lives of office workers. Things get a bit looney tunes at times but ultimately the finale feels correct because there wasnât some stated goal theyâd been working toward narratively all along.
I then stated that the best and most elegant storytelling for TV was on The Good Place, in which every episode furthered the understanding of moral philosophy, advanced the plot, and was funny. It set out with a clear story and wrapped up exactly where it intended in one of the most satisfying conclusions ever that makes me cry every time.
My coworker then said, âWhatâs The Good Place?â
I froze. I frantically ran back everything Iâd said thus far for spoilers and concluded that I had not ruined the plot. âYou havenât seen it?â
âNo, itâs pretty good?â
âItâs. Really good.â
He mused about watching it with his partner or alone. I know he doesnât like to rewatch media but I still suggested, âWatch it alone first, and then rewatch it with her. Trust me. The twist at the end of the first season will recontextualize everything and youâll get to watch her reaction.â
I hope I get to hear him talk about it when I work with him next. Iâm excited.

gojoâs sweet tooth is a menace. you learned that early on when he asked for âa bitâ of sugar in his coffee and ended up turning it into something closer to a dessert syrup. so, of course, when you bake a pear and berry pieâalready sweet enough, mind youâhe sneaks in extra sweetener when he thinks you arenât looking. heâs not very subtle about it. the first time, you almost missed it, but then you saw his telltale smug grin, a bit too pleased with himself as he âinnocentlyâ leaned against the counter.
"toru," you deadpan, arms crossed.
"what? iâm just appreciating your hard work," he says, licking a stray bit of filling off his finger like he's in a commercial.
"youâre ruining my pie."
"nah, iâm improving your pie," he corrects, already reaching for another spoonful.
nanami, on the other hand, is far less chaotic. he keeps things simpleâapple pie, nothing fancy. no extra fillings, no surprise ingredients, just a good olâ classic that never lets him down. itâs his go-to for the weekends, whether he makes it himself (precisely measured, no shortcuts) or picks one up from the bakery he trusts more than some of his coworkers. sometimes, youâll walk into the kitchen and find him in the middle of rolling out dough with the same focus he has when reading financial reports. if you joke about him being a househusband, heâll sigh, wipe his hands on a towel, and say, "do you want pie or not?"
toji doesnât bake. he doesnât have time, patience, or, honestly, the self-control to wait for something to cool down before eating it. but after a long day, when you casually hand him a slice of pumpkin pie, he takes it without a word. heâs not big on admitting things, so he just eats it, nodding once in approval, like thatâs the most gratitude youâre going to get. but the real giveaway is how he never turns it down. ever. even if heâs pretending like he doesnât care.
geto loves pecan pie. no debate. no discussion. no hesitation. the man would probably start a war over it if necessary. you once offered him a slice of something else, and he gave you such a disappointed look that you almost felt guilty.
"youâre really this attached to pecan pie?" you asked, watching as he took slow, deliberate bites like he was savoring each one.
"itâs a masterpiece," he said, as if that explained everything.
choso is all about cherry pie, mostly because he likes the tint it leaves behind. after eating it, heâll glance in the mirror and smile a little at the way his lips look stained, like a kid who got into something he shouldnât have. sometimes, heâll grin at you with his mouth still full just to make you roll your eyes.
"cho, you look like you just drank blood."
"cool, right?"
and then thereâs sukuna. you have to physically stop him from turning a normal, innocent chicken pie into something⌠horrific.
"you canât put human meat in it."
"why not?"
"itâs a chicken pie."
"so?"
you glare at him. he stares back, unbothered.
"suku, if i turn around and find out youâve replaced the filling, i swear to godâ"
he smirks. "you wouldnât even know the difference."
"i would. you know why? because i would throw up."
he just laughs, because, really, who needs horror movies when you live with him?

đŠđ˘đĽđĽđ¨đ° đđđĽđ¤ | đŹ.đŤđđ˘đ
đŹđŽđŚđŚđđŤđ˛: after a terrible day at work, you find an unexpected dose of comfort in an absurd late-night conversation with your coworker.
đđ¨đ§đđđ§đđŹ/đŠđ¨đđđ§đđ˘đđĽ đđ°: spencer reid x newbaumember!femalereader, you make a huge mistake at work (unspecified) for which you get seriously chewed out by hotch, too many beds trope, ridiculously long considering the entire plot revolves around a single conversation, gets kinda wild at the end, spencer hits his head, but itâs nothing serious
đ/đ§: the ending inspired by a situation from my life, but donât worry, my head is fine now (in the general sense of the word) (no one kissed my forehead...) i recommend reading it in bed before sleep <33
đ°đ¨đŤđđŹ: 5.7 k
"Hotch, but I thoughtâ"
"It doesn't matter what you thought," your boss replied in his typical, emotionless tone, which in this particular situation sent a distinct chill down your spine. Every word he uttered felt like a frozen dagger, driven straight between your ribs and left there, while the coldness spread across your skin in the form of goosebumps. "What you did was not only reckless but also undermined all of todayâs hard work by the entire team. They put tremendous effort into locating the unsub and cornering him at that specific location, and because of your decision, he managed to escape. Every additional day this man remains free could cost someone their lifeâan innocent person."
You stood before him in an empty parking lot across from the hotel where your entire team was staying. It wasnât exactly the typical setting for delivering a reprimand, but since you were far from the office, there wasnât a better option at hand. And while you were teetering on the edge of tearsâtears you were desperately holding back to avoid appearing like a weak little girl in his eyesâyou were grateful for one thing. Grateful that he had chosen to chastise you in private. One-on-one. Away from everyone else.
A moment of silence fell between you, and you tried not to lower your head like a chastised childâbut thatâs exactly how you felt. Not just ashamed, but overwhelmingly guilty. As someone who had only recently joined the BAU, youâd never made such an egregious mistake before. A mistake that could cost someone their life. Deep down, you had clung to the naive hope that this moment would never come. That if you followed the instructions of those more experienced than you with feigned confidence, something like this could be avoided.
But reality had placed you in a completely different positionâone where, for a brief moment, the weight of everything rested squarely on your shoulders. You failed, and the unsub escaped.
The wind around you blew with a certain bitterness, tugging at your hair. It drowned out the sound of your heavy breathing, your racing heartbeat, and the loud gulp as you swallowed. Hotch, saying nothing, studied you with a measured gaze. You couldnât help but wonder if he regretted allowing you into this job.
âI wanted you to be aware of that,â he said, his tone less harsh now but tinged with a certain disappointment that only deepened the guilt gnawing at you. He nodded, signaling you were free to go. âThatâs all I had to say.â
He walked away, and watching his figure dissolve into the darkness in such a dramatic manner, you couldnât help but let out a laugh. The laugh immediately turned into the beginning of a sob, which you quickly stifled, waving your hand in front of your face. You stood there for a moment, your feet seemingly rooted to the parking lot, as though the concrete were still fresh, hardening around your shoes.
In your experience, failure almost always came hand in hand with a sense of vulnerability, transporting you into a completely different, weaker body, one without any shields. All the achievements of the past few years, including making it into the BAU at such a young age, seemed to melt away, and once again, you were nothing.
You knew you couldnât stand there all night, but in a way, it felt safer. In the motel, you might run into someone from the team. You might accidentally meet their gaze, and youâd see the disappointment in their eyes. After all those weeks of trying to prove your worth to them, of showing that you even belonged in this job, the last thing you wanted was to face that look.
To muster some courage, you took a deep, slow breath. You needed to slip into your room unnoticed, lie down in bed, hoping that the night would at least slightly cleanse you of your guilt. Hotch was absolutely right. Not only had you wasted an entire day of hard work, but youâd also put civilians from that area in danger. What if tomorrow another person became a victim?
The thought tormented you so much that by the time you reached your door, you were massaging your temples. You inserted the key you had picked up from the front desk into the lock, turned it, and was about to pull the handle⌠but it was locked. Frustrated, you figured the universe had simply decided to unite all of its forces against you as some kind of punishment. Before you could resort to a tired kick at the door and curl up in a ball in the hallway, you tried again. This time, the door opened without issue.
So absorbed in yourself, your situation, and your grievances, you didnât even notice that inside, not only was the light on, but there were someoneâs belongingsâand, most importantly, someone else. It wasnât until you took off your coat and stepped further into the room (if you could even call it that, it was an exceptionally small space) and came face to face with Spencer Reid that you realized you werenât alone.
You stopped mid-step, stunned as if the least expected thing at that moment had just appeared before youâa turtle on stilts wearing a cowboy hat, or some other kind of religious prophet.
Quick noteâthis wasn't the first time you and Reid had shared a room during cases. Specifically, the bed. It all started when you found out he struggled with a fear of the dark, and someoneâs presence really helped him feel better. In fact, at first, he insisted on sleeping on the floor, but you couldn't just watch him suffer on that uncomfortable surface every night. And, you had to admit, sometimes after an especially harrowing day in your, letâs be honest, stressful job, it felt nice to fall asleep next to someone.
As usual, it was him who came to you. Late at night, to your room, when he felt like sleeping would be particularly difficult. He was never there from the startâŚ
"It turns out all the rooms here are double," he blurted out hastily upon seeing you, his tone overly explanatory.
When you walked in, he was in the middle of pulling something out of his suitcase. He straightened up, and you noticed he was wearing a loose T-shirt, his hair damp from a shower, and in his hand, he held that familiar white sweater you often teased him about, the one with an embroidered bear wearing glasses.
"I mean, the rest of the team got roomed together too, so weâre not some weird exception. I hope this doesnât bother you. If it does, well, maybe we can switch somehow⌠I know Elle and JJ are together, and I think they only have two beds in their room, but maybe... or I could go with DerekâŚâ
"Oh, come on," you waved dismissively, your tone sounding a bit irritated, like you were shooing away an annoying fly. The truth was, you were exhausted from the day and didnât want to worry about the accommodation on top of everything else.
Reid stopped mid-sentence, his lips slightly parted. You felt guilty again as you had no reason to speak to him like that. He hadnât done anything to deserve your frustration.
"I'm sorry," you sighed, your tense posture easing a little as you realized you were no longer outside, under the sharp, yet truthful words of your boss. "Really... I'm sorry, Reid. It doesn't bother me at all. Not one bit," you reassured him, sincerely.
He studied you in silence for a moment, his face showing a concerned, analytical expression.
"Actually, weâve shared a room before," you added almost immediately, forcing a little chuckle. "And not just once. Well, at least now we have two bedsâŚ"
"Did you... did you talk to Hotch?"
The question was asked with hesitation, on a breath. Well, it finally meant confronting everything that had happened that day. You looked him straight in the eyes, searching for judgment or any hint of dislike toward you. But there was none. Instead, you found concern and discomfort at the fact that he had even brought up the subject.
"Itâs... itâs okay if you donât want to talk about it," he quickly corrected himself, giving a slight nod. "You... you have every right, I donât expect you to explain anything to me, your conversation with the boss is your private matter... oh God, I feel like with every word I say, my statement is losing more and more sense, and Iâm getting more and more tangled in it, isnât that right?"
He stared at you with furrowed brows, waiting for your reaction. It turned out to be... a burst of laughter. You honestly couldnât help yourself.
âI hate to admit it, but yeah, youâre right. You completely lost your train of thought. Maybe we should just pretend Iâve only just walked through that door, huh?â
âThatâs... thatâs actually a very good suggestion. So... so, uh, hi?â
Your lips curved into a smile, this time genuine.
âHi, Reid.â
He managed to improve your mood in less than five minutes after youâd received a serious reprimand. You were immensely glad to have ended up with him in the room lottery. Shaking your head in disbelief, you began getting ready for bed without a word. He didnât say anything either, sensing you needed a bit of space after everything that had happened. Speaking of space...
âThis room is alarmingly small, donât you think?â you said, returning from the shower and slowly sliding under your blanket. Fifteen minutes under scalding hot water had helped your body relax, and you no longer felt like you might throw up on your own feet at any moment. âItâs like some sort of exclusive cupboard under the stairs. Still a cupboard, though. Look, I can practically touch you.â
You stretched out your arm to demonstrate. Sure enough, even though you were sitting on neighboring beds, your fingertips almost brushed the fabric of his shirt. Between you was a massive nightstand made of dark wood, the same as the windowsill and the floor. On it sat a slightly old-fashioned bedside lamp with a glass base and a slightly yellowed lampshade. Other than that, there wasnât much furniture. Not that there wouldâve been room for any.
âDo you hear that?â Reid asked enigmatically, sitting up straighter on his bed.
You looked at him, intrigued.
âListen closelyâŚis thatâŚpaper rustling? Morgan drafting his resignation?â
You chuckled. Your coworker had a particular sensitivity to the motels you stayed in and their condition. He firmly believed that since you risked your lives almost daily during dangerous cases and investigations, you deserved accommodations that were at least decent. And that wasnât always what you got.
âDonât worry, as long as the shower has hot water, we donât have to fear him leaving,â you said. âThough now that I think about it, I canât blame Harry.â
âHarry?â
âPotter. If I lived in such a claustrophobic little room, Iâd convince myself I was a wizard too. Can I turn off the lamp?"
You politely asked, as usual, leaving plenty of room for potential conversation. Aware of his fear, you always ensured he felt comfortable with the encroaching darkness. Reid looked at you with a hint of hesitation.
"Maybe... maybe it could stay on for a bit longer? If that's..."
"Thatâs okay," you finished for him, knowing what he intended to say.
A fleeting, grateful expression crossed his face. Seeing it, a small smile tugged at the corner of your lips. You were glad he no longer felt as ashamed of his unease with the dark. Besides, you preferred the light to stay on too. You were afraid of what the darkness might concealâthe worries and anxieties it could bring⌠already was bringing.
Mainly, it was the looping words of your boss, the thought of how you'd messed up, and the rest of the team. Well, there was one thing that eased your mind in that regard: knowing that Reid was lying in the bed next to yours and recalling the look on his face when he saw you. He wasnât angry that youâd let the unsub get away. Maybe the others werenât as furious with you as youâd imagined.
Or maybe it was the opposite?
Maybe he, as the second-youngest member of the team after you, was the only one showing you any understanding. And the others, perhaps, harbored nothing but disdain, their resentment growing stronger at the mere thought of youâŚ
"You're shivering."
Reid's observation reached your ears as you lay on your side, facing away from him. His voice was gentle, blending seamlessly with the quiet that had previously enveloped the room, not cutting through the sound of your sleepy breaths but accompanying it. Not knowing how to respond, you gave a small shrug. He probably saw itâyou could feel his gaze on you. It wasn't intrusive, just a worried glance from the corner of his eye.
"I could turn up the temperature if you're cold. Do you want me to?"
Your trembling had nothing to do with the cold, but admitting that felt like too much. You pulled the blanket tighter around you, trying to steady your restless body.
"Yeah, if you donât mind," you murmured in response.
It was easier to blame it on the chill. Still, hearing him get up and move toward the thermostat, you felt a pang of guilt for pulling him out of bed. He should already be asleep. There was so much work waiting for you both tomorrow. Another day of the investigationâa case that could have been solved already if not for youâŚ
"I'm afraidâŚit doesnât seem to work," Reid said thoughtfully. He fiddled with it for a moment longer before letting out a sigh and returning to his bed, though he didnât lie down right away. He paused in the narrow space between your beds, and you felt his gaze again, wondering what it meant this time.
"Maybe⌠I donât know, would you want my sweater? You know which one. It'sâŚtoo warm for me, but since you're freezingâŚâ
Reidâs voice was soft, tinged with an almost shy kindness that made your chest tighten. You didnât need to turn around to picture the small, uncertain smile that likely accompanied his offer. Of course, you knew exactly which one he meant. He had received it as a Christmas gift from Penelope, and it was quite light and breathable. But what truly made it a staple in his pajamas was the adorable bear wearing glasses that appeared on the front. Sometimes, when you slept in the same bed, you could feel the softness of its fabric.
You had just turned toward him, a hint of hesitation in your eyes. You werenât actually coldâyou had been lying about that all alongâbut still... the offer lingered in your mind. His kindness, followed by the concern. You felt that taking his specific sweater, which was not only comfortable but also... well, his, could effectively calm your trembling limbs and ease your anxiety.
"Would you like to give it to me?" you asked, making sure. "You don't have to."
He shrugged slightly and immediately bent down to grab the suitcase tucked under the bed. The sweater in question was right on top, so he could reach for it at any moment when he felt the need for an extra layer.
"I know I don't have to," he replied, pausing for a moment with the sweater in hand. "But, you know, I want to. It's just a sweater."
"Won't Penelope be mad if you're giving it away like that?" you asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Sheâd be furiousâŚ" he started, his gaze fixed stubbornly on the edge of your bed, his forehead lightly furrowed. After a serious moment of hesitation, he sat on the bed, as gently as if he feared it would burn him. He stretched the sweater out towards you. "âŚif I gave it to anyone else. But in this case, she'd probably scold me if I didnât give it to you."
You took it from him. Though it wasnât one of those thick, bulky sweaters, it felt surprisingly heavy in your hands.
"I wouldn't be so sure about that," you replied after a moment of hesitation, letting out a sigh. "After today."
Reid looked at your face in silence. Suddenly, you started regretting not turning off the lamp after all. His gaze seemed piercing, too piercing. It surely noted every shadow of doubt and shame cast by the subtle changes in your expression.
âThatâs whatâs worrying you, isnât it?â
For a moment, you both stared at each other in silence. You sighed, shifting slightly to the side, making room beside you.
âCome on. Itâs easier for me to talk when I donât have someone directly in front of me.â
Surprised, he stared at the small space next to you, shaking his head slightly.
âBut⌠this bed is kind of ridiculously small, donât you think?â
âIâm not that wide, Reid. If thatâs what youâre suggestingâŚâ
âThatâs absolutely not what I meant, and I definitely wasnât suggesting anything,â he quickly explained. âWell, maybe apart from the fact that every tiny movement will risk us both falling offâŚâ He looked at you with an unchanged expression, patiently pointing to the spot next to you and sighed in defeat. âOkay, I feel like Iâm not winning this oneâŚâ
Well, he had a point. After a while of shifting around, trying to find a position where you wouldnât keep elbowing each other in the ribs, and after countless accidental jabs and whispered apologies, it ended with him half-lying, half-sitting, leaning against the headboard of the narrow bed, while you lay flat on your back, your head resting on the pillow. His figure cast a gentle shadow over you, making the room feel darker than it really was. It had a calming effect. Or maybe it was just the presence of someone so close by. Or perhaps it was the touch of the soft sweater, the fabric resting between your fingers, in the way one holds a rosary. Maybe it was a little bit of all those things.
"I screwed up today," you said. Though your voice was soft, there was no trace of gentleness in your tone. From the way you were lying, you could see his face, and you noticed his lips part slightly, as if to deny it. "And don't try to convince me otherwise, Reid. I knew that even before Hotch said it to my face."
You heard him sigh softly.
"I guess it wasn't a pleasant conversation."
"Oh, Reid, it was like a horror movie. But I don't blame him for anything he said. I deserved to hear it all from someone else's mouth, not just from my own head." Restlessly, you began to fiddle with the sweater like a stress toy. He watched the movement of your hands, alternating between that and the slight trembling of your chin. "At least the talk with him is over. Now I'm scared... scared of whatâs with the rest of the team."
You voiced your biggest worry out loud, and there was a silence as he pondered it.
âI think⌠I think weâve talked about this before,â he replied finally, clearing his throat. âAbout how youâre afraid of what others will think of you. And I donât want to repeat myself, but... you need to look at it a bit differently. We all started somewhere, we were all rookies. If we got mad at each other every time someone messed up, well, there wouldnât be a team. Of course, we keep in mind all the mistakes we've made in the past..."
âYou're good at comforting...â you muttered bitterly.
"...But we donât dwell on them unnecessarily," he finished. "We're only human, you know. Itâs estimated that each person makes about five to seven mistakes a day. If we assume you live to be about eighty... though of course, I wish you much more than that, that would be between 150,000 and 200,000."
You snorted, listening to those statistics.
âI feel like Iâve already used up half of my lifetime quota today,â you confessed, while also reflecting on the first part of his statement. About the team, who, according to him, wasnât going to hold a grudge against youâŚ
Reid paused for a moment, glancing at you out of the corner of his eye.
âItâs not the end of the world,â he said after a while. âJust make sure youâre really careful when youâre old. You wonât forget when your grandkids have birthdays.â
âDamn, I think thatâs the problem. Iâve got the memory of a goldfish. Iâll probably mix up their names. Or call them all by the same one. The prettiest one, of course. The least common one.â
âJust make sure you get a good calendar,â he suggested. âOne thatâll remember everything for you. Dates, names.â
âAnd the number for the rheumatologist.â
âAnd the number for the rheumatologist,â he agreed.
You spent a long moment without bringing up any new topics, but laughing quietly about the course of the conversation. If you looked at it that way, this was probably the only time in your life you talked to someone about being an old lady with a questionable memory and joint problems with amusement rather than sheer terror. Although the bed was seriously small, you felt more comfortable than ever before. You were sinking deeper into the mattress, into his side, into relaxation. You wondered if and when, or even if, he planned to go back to his own bed. There was really no reason for him to stay...but was there any reason for him to leave?
âAnd you?â you spoke again after a long moment. You felt like the only way to keep him around was by saying something. Not that you were desperate to have him stay⌠âHave you ever messed up on a case? Like, seriously messed up?â
"I could lie and say I haven't," he noticed.
He shifted slightly, likely due to exhaustion, as his back had been slowly sliding down the headboard for a while, until it finally sank into the mattress. His head rested on the pillow right next to yours, closer than ever before. Well, you could only blame the narrow bed for that. Because of the tight space, you had to lie on your side, which meant your breath brushed against his cheek.
"You could. But then I'd ask Elle for the truth, and you'd only end up compromising yourself."
"That's true. That's why I'm telling you. Just promise you won't laugh."
"This sounds serious. Come on, what did you do?" you asked, genuinely curious, a smile tugging at your lips. "Oh, or let me guess."
He lay on his back, his gaze fixed on the ceiling. However, when you suggested it, he slowly and hesitantly turned onto his side as well, so that you were face to face. He probably wanted to see your reaction, the laughter you'd burst into once he told you, whatever it was.
"You have three guesses," he announced. He tried to gesture to you encouragingly with his head, but then, for a split second, his chin brushed against yours. Slightly flustered, he quickly froze again.
For a moment, something changed in your breath. You bit your lip, thinking. His gaze briefly dropped to it.
"Okay, so thatâs the first one," you said, taking in more air than you probably needed. You didnât really understand what was happening, but it seemed like you were running out of oxygen faster than you should have been. "Did you confuse your weapon with a taser?"
"Really, that was the first thing that came to your mind when you thought about a mistake I might have made?" he scoffed. His breath warmed your face in a pleasant way.
"Oh, sorry, but itâs really hard for me to come up with anything when it comes to a genius with eidetic memory," you replied, rolling your eyes. "I donât know, did you lose some evidence? Something really important?" you suggested, trying to read confirmation from his brown, unusually gentle eyes at that moment. He gently shook his head.
"Now, I honestly donât know. Okay, this might sound like some soap opera plot, but here goes. Were you supposed to keep an eye on a potential victim and ended up having a passionate affair with them?"
You lowered your voice to a flirtatious whisper as you said the last words.
For a moment, he held your gaze. He met it like an opponent, sending an exciting shiver down your spine. And it wasnât because of the cold. But then, he submissively lowered his eyes. You let out such a strong burst of laughter that you started to worry if you had accidentally spat on him.
"Spencer Reid, youâre joking with me, right?"
He turned back onto his back again, avoiding looking at your wide-open mouth and amused eyes. You propped yourself up on your elbow, gently nudging his shoulder.
"What kind of... seductress beast are you? Because I don't know how else to call it," you muttered, still shaking your head from side to side. "Wow, I didnât know this side of you."
"Thereâs no side like that," he replied defensively, closing his eyes with some embarrassment. "It was... she was an actress who had a stalker..."
"An actress?"
"...and it just happened that way! But it was definitely a mistake. And it wasnât any... passionate affair, as you called it. I put her in unnecessary danger when we kissed in the pool..."
"In the pool?"
"Oh, why do I even keep talking?" he groaned, pressing one hand to his tightly closed eyes. He suddenly snorted. "Sure, laugh even louder. Gideon and Derek in the next room won't mind if you wake them up."
"Oh, don't change the subject now. You seduced an actress. Was she famous?"
"I didnât seduce her..."
"So, she seduced you?"
Reid sighed, resigned.
"Well, Iâd put it that way," he admitted finally, quietly, with a certain childish indignation, as if he had simply decided to surrender to the onslaught of your questions. He didnât reveal much, but after a moment, you learned a few important details about the case, and with some... relief, you realized you didnât recognize the actressâs name. But why relief?
Suddenly, however, the hysterical amusement faded, leaving you with a genuine dilemma. Reid was still lying on his back, avoiding your mocking gaze and comments. Before you could stop yourself, you lightly touched his arm to get his attention. He nodded questioningly.
"I know this might be a very strange and, above all, an extremely personal question, but what does it take to seduce you?" you asked.
Reid froze, his eyebrows shooting up to his hairline.
"What? What do you mean?"
"I just realized that Iâve probably never seen you actively filter anyone. Consciously, that is. Because sometimes it happens, and you donât even notice it," he opened his mouth to protest, but you quickly covered it with your hand. Confused, he looked down at it. "Donât even try to deny it, everyone would confirm it. But Iâm trying to imagine the kind of person you would lose your head for, and Iâve got a few conflicting ideas. So, Iâll repeat the question. What does it take to seduce you? Asking for a friend, of course."
Reid flinched as if alarmed.
"What friend?"
"My God, itâs just a figure of speech."
He sighed, and the way he shook his head showed a certain disbelief.
"Youâre surprisingly hyperactive, considering the time. Maybe we should go to bed?"
"No, I asked you a question," you protested. "Does she have to be pretty? Smart? Probably both, right?"
He looked at you with the same expressionâsimultaneously embarrassed, disbelieving, shocked, amused, offended, and above all, thoroughly confused.
"I feel like this question is going to keep you up tonight. So, for the sake of your own sleep, Iâll answer briefly. And I donât care if my answer satisfies you or not." Reid paused, and you waved your hand, urging him to continue. He sighed. "She just... has to seem... interesting."
"Was there any more evasive answer?" you snorted, disappointed.
"Did you expect an entire essay?"
"Well, honestly, yes. Last time you talked to me for over thirty minutes about bioluminescence and what causes it. You were able to go on and on about that, but not this time?"
You knew by now you were just teasing him, playing with his nerves as if it were an instrument you'd been mastering since early childhood, attending lessons three times a week and slowly climbing the ranks of your musical career.Â
Your conversations often felt like a game of ping-pong, with each of you exchanging comments, remarks, observations, and verbal jabs at a pace that was downright wild. Time completely vanished for you then, feeling as though you could carry on such a dialogue forever.
"Goodnight," he finally said, without much firmness in his voice. Well, that was probably more out of practicality than a strong desire to end the chat. It was indeed late. "I hope I don't bump into you too many times during the night. Or you into me."
"So, you're already tired of talking to me?" you asked, feigning hurt. You even tilted your head dramatically.
For a moment, he hesitated to reply, his brown eyes nervously scanning your face, a barely noticeable smile tugging at his lips.
"Quite the opposite," he finally responded. You raised your eyebrows, not allowing yourself to feel satisfied with his words in case they turned out to be pure sarcasm. "SoâŚgoodnight."
As a result of some sort of scuffle, you found yourselves in a rather chaotic position. Well, you were definitely taking up most of the bed, comfortably sprawled in the center. He lay more on the edge, somewhere between lying on his back and on his side. Looking at him and his slightly flushed cheeks, which were quite an endearing sight, you suddenly realized the meaning of his earlier words. I hope I don't bump into you too many times during the night. So he did intend to sleep with you on this narrow bed, when there was a perfectly empty one, entirely at his disposal, just beside you? An unexpected choice, but⌠you werenât complaining. In fact, you were kind of okay with it. With a slightly enigmatic expression, you leaned closer to him, intending to say something softly.
Reid perked up, as although he had officially ended the conversation, he was still curious about what you were about to say.
"Goodnight," you said slowly, inhaling the scent of his freshly washed hair. You should have moved away, giving him space to settle more comfortably, but you wouldn't be yourself if you didn't add, âSeductive beast."
âGod, nothing in life will ever make me regret more than telling you about this,â he sighed, genuinely concerned about that prospect.
You let out a snort and were about to mumble something else when he, with resignation, turned fully onto his back. Well... at least he tried. He was so close to the edge of the mattress that it simply ended beneath him.
You shot up into a sitting position, startled by the sudden noise and the chaos that filled the room.
âSpencer,â you managed to gasp, jumping off the bed to check on him.
It wasn't an easy task; everything was submerged in darkness. If falling off the bed itself didn't sound like one of the most humiliating accidents a person could have, adding to it the fact that he had hit his head on the wide dresser next to the bed made it worse. And, as a result, the nightlight had been knocked over and shattered...
Fumbling, you reached for the light switch, and when the room was lit again, you moved to him. Kneeling beside Reid, who was slowly propping himself up, you gently held his shoulders.
"Careful, Jesus, you hit your head so hard..."
He squinted and furrowed most of his face, letting out a sharp breath.
"Does it hurt a lot?" you asked, carefully inspecting his head and looking for any serious injuries, maybe some blood... but you saw nothing
Spencer looked at you with a sort of seriousness, as if the pain had suddenly faded.
"What else is it supposed to do, tickle?"
For a moment, the room fell quieter, but it was impossible to ignore the mutual sense of relief that things hadnât turned out worse. His words threw you off a bit; at first, you didnât fully grasp their meaning. Instead, you focused entirely on analyzing his face, his body language, his behavior. You were afraid he might have a concussion.
"I have absolutely no medical training, but..." you paused, casting another worried glance his way. Reid was slowly starting to shake off the shock and disorientation. "But judging by how quickly your sarcasm came back, Iâd say youâre going to be fine."
He let out a noise somewhere between a scoff and a groan.
"Doctor of the year, right hereâŚ"
Just then, a loud knock echoed on the door. The door to your room
âIs someone murdering you guys in there or what?â Morganâs concerned voice called out.
You exchanged glancesâboth equally confused and, in a way, slightly terrified. Clearing your throat, you spoke up.
âWell, since Iâm the reason this whole situation happened, I guess itâs on me to explain to him how it even got to this point,â you sighed. When he didnât react, you raised your eyebrows. âNo objections? No heroic offers to take this off my hands?â
âNot a chance,â he replied curtly, shaking his head before wincing briefly as another wave of pain clearly shot through it.
You told him, worried, to stay down for a little while longer for his own good.
âAnd as my mom used to say,â you added, slowly starting to stand, glancing briefly toward the door. Morgan knocked againâor rather, pounded on it hard enough to nearly take it off its hinges.
Taking your time, you rested both hands on Reidâs shoulders in an almost protective gesture. Completely ignoring the surprised look on his face, you brushed your lips against his forehead.
âA kiss will make it better.â

You walk into the bar with a smile, eyes darting around the dimly lit building to try to spot your boyfriend in the crowd. He and his coworkers agreed to meet here after their shift, and he invited you along, knowing that his friends would love to see you, and vice versa. You begin to pull your phone out of the back pocket of your jeans, eyes still scanning the crowd as you get ready to text Buck. You finally spot him, though, and his face lights up when he makes eye contact with you.Â
You weave your way through the crowd, slipping your phone back into your pocket as you go. You mumble quick apologies as you squeeze your way past people, silently wondering why the hell thereâs so many people here tonight. Usually, this place is pretty lowkey, but tonight, you can feel something in the air that is making the people of LA even crazier than usual. Must be the full moon, which Buck has told you everything about.Â
âHi, baby.â Buck whispers in your ear as he wraps his arms around your shoulders, pulling you into him. You wrap your arms around his torso as you nuzzle into his chest. No matter how many times heâs gone to work since youâve started dating, you still feel an overwhelming sense of calm when you finally see him again; knowing that heâs made it home in one piece.
âHi, my love.â you reply, angling your head up just slightly so he can hear you over the chatter and music of the bar.
âYou want a drink?â Buck asks once he pulls away, moving his hand from your shoulder down to your hand. You nod, smiling as he gives your hand one firm squeeze. âThe usual?â You nod again, and he gives you a wink, leaning down to give you a gentle kiss on the forehead before he journeys across the bar to get you your drink of choice.Â
You say hello to Hen, Bobby, and Eddie as Buck gets your drink, easily falling into conversation with them as they watch and laugh at Chim and Maddie playing pool very competitively. You laugh when you see Maddie sink yet another ball, and Chimney begins to complain very loudly that Maddieâs cheating as she does a little celebratory dance along to the music blaring from the speakers above.
Buck slows his pace as he walks back with your drink and a refill for himself, a smile growing on his face as he takes in the scene. You fit in so well with his family, and his heart swells at the sight of you, head tilted back as you laugh along with everyone else.Â
He hands you your drink, and you mumble a quick thank you as you keep your eyes on what Chimney calls his âcomeback shot.â Heâs completely focused as he bends forward slightly, eyes trained on the planned path of the cue ball, and you all go quiet, you and Hen grabbing each otherâs hands and holding them up near your chest as you watch. When he finally hits the ball, it goes a little crooked, making him miss the shot, and he groans loudly, throwing his hands up in the air as he turns away. You and Hen let out disappointed sounds as your hands fall back down to your sides, and you lean back into Buck, looking up at him with a lovestruck expression.
âIâm glad youâre here.â Buck whispers into your ear. His arm instinctively moves to wrap around your plush middle as he pulls you further back into him, and you hum softly in agreement, leaning your head back against his chest.
âHow was your shift?â you ask, turning your head and tilting your chin up to face him. He shrugs, a smile forming on his face. âIt was better than how the next shift is probably gonna go. Chimâs a sore loser, and heâs never gonna let me hear the end of âmy sister cheating.ââ he teases, his smile widening as he feels the vibrations of your laugh against his broad chest.
âLike you havenât held anything against him like that.â you reply in the same tone, raising a brow. He scoffs, rolling his eyes as he looks away.
âThatâs not the point.â he murmurs just loud enough for you to hear before taking a sip of his beer. The smile he was fighting erupts on his face when he hears you laugh again, looking at you over the bottle and giving you a wink.
âSo, what is the point?â you ask as you turn in his grip, wrapping your arms around his neck. He shrugs, his hands moving to your hips, one squeezing your soft flesh while the other rests the side of his bottle on the fabric of your jeans.
âThat you look gorgeous tonight.â he says in a suggestive tone, although it comes out as more of a question. You smile, averting your gaze as your cheeks heat up from the compliment. No matter how many times he compliments you, you canât help but feel giddy.
âNice deflection.â you tease, tilting your head to the side as you look back up into his eyes. You begin to gently sway side to side along to the music floating through the air around you, almost as if acting as a blanket to shield your moment from those around you.
He shrugs, a smirk forming on his face before he leans down to give you a sweet kiss, melting into your arms as he feels the tension from his shift slowly releasing from his body. Heâs not sure how you do it, but he always feels like youâre able to lift the problems off his shoulders when heâs in your arms.
Youâre ripped away from your moment when you hear Chimney calling your name desperately. You break apart from Buckâs embrace and turn to face Chimney with a smile, raising a brow.
âCome play with me. Youâre the only other one that knows how it is to put up with a Buckley like I do.â You laugh, giving Maddie a knowing look as she hands you the cue stick with a roll of her eyes. She goes over and stands with Buck, and both of them look at you and Chimney beginning a new game with fond looks.Â
Your game is far less competitive than the one before, as neither you nor Chimney feel the need to beat each other. Even so, you can hear Buck and Maddie arguing with each other after each turn, telling the other person that a good hit didnât count, and a bad hit deserves a redo. You all know that their argument isnât serious; they both have small smiles on their faces, but itâs still entertaining to watch.Â
The game is at a standstill as Buck argues that you deserve a redo for missing the ball when you tried to shoot. You were laughing so hard at their antics that your hand slipped and made you just barely graze the cue ball, and while you were willing to give up your turn, as you were already losing by a long shot, Buck clearly has other plans.
âIâm gonna go get a refill. You want anything?â you ask Chimney, and he shakes his head.Â
âI wouldnât come back if I were you. Weâll be here all night.â he teases, and you laugh as you shrug at his words.
âThey could be arguing about who gives a better performance during karaoke. Could be worse.â you tell him. He hums in agreement, shaking his head as he laughs at the memory of their very long argument about it. While Maddie is a far better singer than Buck, he argues that he makes up for it with his âmoves and face.â
You make your way to the bar; the voices of your friends being drowned out as you get further away from them. By the time youâre at the bar, youâre listening to a woman begging her friend for her phone back so she can call her ex, which makes you laugh. You wait at the bar for the bartender to make his way to you, and as you stand there, you feel a presence appear beside you.
You turn your head slightly; just enough to see the man from the corner of your eye, but he takes this clear sign that you donât want to talk as an invitation.
âCome here often?â he purrs, leaning against the bar on his elbow. You scoff, shaking your head as you let out a quiet laugh. You turn your head to face him, raising a brow.
âDid you really just try to use that line?â you ask in disbelief. Heâs cute, you guess, but heâs nowhere as attractive as Buck. And either way, nothing he could say would make you actually want to leave with him.
Although your eyes show clear signs of disinterest, he sees the way you turn to face him, and he smirks. Clearly to him, you want him to keep talking. He had been watching you all night, and although he saw you with Buck, he still decides to take a chance now that youâre alone.
âWhy, is it gonna work?â he asks suggestively, sliding impossibly closer to you. You can feel his cologne burning your nose, and it takes everything in you to scrunch your face up and tell him to fuck off. You donât though, instead giving him the benefit of the doubt; that he hadnât seen you with your boyfriend earlier.
âAbsolutely not. Sorry.â you tell him with an apologetic, yet vaguely fake smile. He smirks, running his tongue along the inside of his cheek as he leans down to whisper in your ear.
âYou wanna get out of here?â This man clearly doesnât know when to stop, you think. Did he seriously think you saying âabsolutely notâ was you begging him to take you back to his place?
âIâm good, actually.â you tell him, turning to try to get the bartenderâs attention. You can feel unease creeping into your belly, and you can see the way his eyes travel down to your tits when your eyes move away from his frame. His smirk drops at your words, and he leans down so his face is right beside yours, the alcohol on his breath filling your nose and making your stomach churn.
âI think youâre lying. You just want me to keep trying.â he purrs, raising two fingers to the side of your jaw and tilting your head back to face him. You move your face out of his grasp, leaning back and off of the bar as you see that his nose is practically touching yours. You feel bile crawling up your throat as your eyes dart around the bar, trying desperately to meet one of your friendsâ eyes, if not Buckâs.Â
âCome on, sweetheart. I know youâre desperate for it.â he says in a slightly condescending tone. Your brows furrow at his words. What the hell is he talking about? He grabs your wide hips roughly when you donât respond right away, his words shocking you to silence. He pulls you against him, pushing himself against you at the same time, and your hands immediately go to his chest to push him away. Heâs not exactly a big guy, but he must clearly have muscles under his shirt, as he barely budges at your desperate attempt to create some space between you two.
âI have a boyfriend.â you tell him, your voice just loud enough for him to hear over the loud voices around you. Your eyes keep searching around the bar to anyone that will look at you. Surely, someone will help you. But no one looks. Everyone is in their own little world as they continue to talk and sway to the music with the people they came with.
âWell, he shouldnât have left you alone.â he whispers into your ear, leaning down to place a hot kiss against your neck. You flinch as his lips make contact with your skin, trying desperately to wiggle out of his grip as his lips burn your skin. You want to find Buck, you want to launch yourself into his arms and never let go, but first, you need to get away from this creep.Â
âHey! Get your hands off of her!â you suddenly hear over the music, and you sigh, head turning to see Buck stomping toward you. You barely even notice Bobby and Eddie a few steps behind him, immediately following him when they saw his body get tense and his fists clench at his sides.
You let out a sigh of relief as you feel the man ripped away from you, watching with wide eyes as Buck stares the man down and pushes his chest a few times.
âYou confused about the word âno?â Meanâs she doesnât fucking want you.â he seethes. You gasp as Buck raises a fist, ready to punch the man, but Eddie and Bobby are rushing to him immediately and pulling him back. You almost laugh when you see the man use this chance as a time to scurry away, weaving himself through the crowd and toward the exit.Â
You take a few steps toward Buck, then wrap your arms around his torso, sniffling softly as a few tears fall from your eyes. Now that the threat is gone, you canât help the tears from falling. You canât imagine what mightâve happened if Buck hadnât seen you.
âShh. I got you, baby.â he whispers into your ear, his body relaxing slightly as he wraps his arms around you. He rubs your back slowly, chin resting on the top of your head as you try to catch your breath through your tears.Â
âCan we go home?â you ask him softly, looking up at him through your lashes. He nods immediately, one hand moving to your cheek to wipe your tears. âOf course, baby.â he replies in a similar tone. He leans down to kiss your forehead, then looks up at Bobby and Eddie, who nod before he has a chance to speak. He gives them a tight-lipped smile, then turns you both towards the exit.Â
Once youâre out of the loud bar, he stops you, putting his hands on your arms and turning you to face him. He looks down at your sad, scared expression and your shaky hands and his heart breaks. He shouldâve been there, he thinks.
âAre you okay?â he asks in a gentle tone. You nod slowly, letting in a shaky breath as you try to slow your racing heart. âIâm sorry, sweet girl. I shouldâve-â You cut him off before he can say anything else, shaking your head.
âItâs not your fault. You were talking to Maddie, and I wanted to get another drink.â you tell him, sniffling softly between sentences. He sighs, bringing you in for another tight hug. You melt into his arms again, your body relaxing completely now that the sounds from the bar are no longer pounding against your skull and youâre back in the safety of Buckâs arms.
âBut I couldâve-â he whispers, but you shake your head again, speaking before he can.
âNo. Baby, itâs fine. You got there before anything could really happen. And youâre here now, so you can take me home.â you tell him, your last sentence almost coming out as a question. You tilt your head up to look at him, resting your chin on his chest, and he gives you a troubled smile as he nods.Â
âOkay. Letâs get you home.âÂ
He leads you to his jeep with a hand firmly around your shoulders, almost as if shielding you from the world. If it were up to him, he would keep you within armâs reach, or at least within eyesight from now on, but he knows thatâs unrealistic.Â
Once youâre in the jeep and safely buckled, he moves around to the driver's side and gets in. Once his seatbelt is buckled and the jeep is in drive he puts a hand on your thigh, his grip tight as he thinks about that manâs hands on you. While he knows Bobby and Eddie had good reason to pull him away before he could get a punch in, he wishes he couldâve fucking killed him for even thinking about doing that to a woman, let alone you.Â
He helps you out of the car and up to his apartment when heâs parked in his parking spot, and then you both change into comfy clothes before you cuddle up on the couch. He puts on a movie, but his focus is on you, how your head is resting on his shoulder and your hand is tightly gripping the front of his hoodie. He kisses your temple, trying to read the expression on your face to make sure youâre really alright before he hesitantly moves his gaze to the tv.Â
âThank you.â you mumble, not even bothering to tear your gaze from the tv as you speak. He squeezes your shoulder, shaking his head.
âYou donât need to thank me, baby. Iâll protect my girl. Always.â he tells you earnestly, and he means it. If you were to be in any kind of danger, he knows heâd do just about anything to make sure heâs in between you and the thing threatening to cause you harm.

âIs that a new necklace?â
I grimace, the annoying twerpâs voice sounding like nails on a chalkboard.
âNo, Nicholas, it's the one I always wear.â I press my lips into a tight line, staring at the papers in front of me. After everything Iâve tried, I donât know how he hasnât caught on with how absolutely, utterly disinterested I am.
Nicholas was a recent graduate from the academy, starting his first year here at the Association. At first he seemed sweet, like an infatuated kid, but it quickly worsened and now I have to deal with harassment every day at work.
Heâd do anything and everything to spark a conversation, trying to work any attention out of me despite all my efforts of ignoring him. I tried to be nice originally, letting him down easily whenever heâd pay me compliments and ask me out to lunch.
That didnât work.
He became more persistent, and I resorted to either giving him the silent treatment or being straight up rude. Throwing him off my back seemed like an impossible task, and I was convinced I had developed some sort of parasite that was bound to me until I retired.
âAh, Iâve never noticedâŚâ Nicholas sat himself in front of me, and I could feel his stare on my face.
Donât look up, donât look up, donât look up.
âHey guys!â
Thank God.
Forcing a smile at Taraâs cheerfulness, Nicholas paid her a nod, clearly unsettled with her interruption. She came up behind me, wrapping her arms around my shoulders. If there was anyone who was capable of putting a wedge in between me and my borderline stalker, it was Tara.
âAre you excited for the Hunterâs Ball? I can't believe itâs already coming upâŚâ She sighed dreamily behind me, resting her cheek on the top of my head. While the Hunterâs Ball wasnât my favorite event, it was typically a good time.
Well, at least before Nicholas came along.
I couldnât imagine how it would go this year, him crawling six feet up my ass as I try to shake him off the whole night. Itâs bad enough I have to deal with him sober, I canât even imagine how much more unbearable heâd become with drinks in his system. This was the one night of the year the Association actually shows their appreciation for their employees, and Iâd be damned if I couldnât enjoy myself.
âItâs always nice we get a plus one,â Tara mentions, âI can't wait to see who everyone brings." She nudges my shoulder with her arm, laughing.
The look in Nicholasâ eyes told me everything he was about to say. I could practically hear the words come out of his mouth before he even spoke them-
âYeah, Iâm gonna bring my boyfriend.â I spoke before thinking, the words an act of desperation. Nicholasâ eyes widened and Taraâs arms flew from my body, as she whipped herself to stand in front of me.
Oh no, why would I say that- Why did I say that?!
âYour⌠what!â She started grasping at my hands, questions flying out of her mouth before I couldnât even process half of them, âSince when? Whatâs his name? Whereâd you meet him? Do you have any pictures?â
I knew I had gotten myself into trouble, I didnât even have the slightest clue as to who I could possibly feign to be my boyfriend; but the look on Nicholasâ face told me I needed to keep up whatever I was doing, because it was working.
I smiled innocently, âWeâve been keeping it on the down low, things are still pretty new. I was planning to hard launch us at the Ball.â Chuckling nervously, I was convinced nobody was believing a word I was saying.
âOhmygosh Mystery Man! Iâm so excited!â Tara continued to blabber on, trying to pull any detail she could out of me. I made eye contact with Nicholas and thought about how soon the Ball was - only a week away.
Letting out a sigh of relief because of my believable lie, the feeling soon faded and was replaced with chest crushing stress. I had no boyfriend, and no plan; I was going to have to think fast.
-
Laying in my bed that night, I scoured my brain for any potential suitor. I thought maybe Zayne, a cardiac surgeon and childhood best friend. Heâd be perfect, all my coworkers would be so pleased, but a cow would have to jump over the moon before heâd even think about complying. Maybe Xavierâs friend Jeremiah? A sweet floristâŚNo, Xavier would never let me do that.
I flipped onto my stomach, screaming into my pillow. Smushing my face into the fabric, I silently prayed Iâd suffocate and be free from this mess Iâd webbed myself into.
Before I could pass out and be put out of my misery, my phone started to ring.
Not even looking at the caller id, I picked it up and answered with a disgruntled, âHello?â
âYou never sound pleased to hear from me, Kitten.â
I screamed into the pillow again, Sylus being the complete utter last person I wanted to hear from right now.
He chuckled over the line, âActually, I think that might be the unhappiest Iâve heard you.â
âWhat do you want?â
âCan I not just call to talk? Iâve had a rough day and wanted to hear your voice.â
I let out a forced laugh, âYouâve had a rough day? YOUâVE had a rough day? You will not believe the day I had then.â
His voice softened, âTalk to me about it then.â
While I most definitely realized my day couldnât be comparable to his, as he was essentially a mob boss running the N109 Zone, venting about my problems felt nice. As much as I couldnât stand Sylus, with his incessant arrogance and backhanded flattery, he was easy to talk to sometimes.
Sometimes.
âI donât even know how I got myself into this situation. Well, I do know, I just didnât mean to!â I groaned, throwing my face into my hands.
He sits in silence for a minute, and I can hear the soft playing of one of his records in the background. Itâs annoying how he feels the need to call and bother me, with a side of music, to wind down at night.
âWhen is it?â He finally asks, and I hear shuffling.
âNext Saturday, soâŚâ I can practically see the clock ticking down, âShit, a week from today.â
âWhat time?â
â9- Sylus, why?â
âIâll be there at 8:30 then.â Thereâs mirth in his voice and my face goes pale, âSylus, no, donât you dare. It cannot be you, just let me borrow one of your men or something.â
Sylus lets out a low laugh, âNow why would I do that when I could just be your date?â
âNot date,â I cut him off, âfake boyfriend.â
âOf course, fake boyfriend.â He clucked his tongue, âWhy would I let someone else be your fake boyfriend?â
âI donât know, maybe the fact that youâre the big bad Onychinus boss?â Pressing a finger to my temple to ease the headache that he was becoming, I started to pace my floor. âYouâre stepping into enemy territory at this event, thereâs no way Iâll be able to save your ass if you get found out, let alone what will happen to me and my place at the Association.â
âIâve already met some of your coworkers before, remember? Itâs best if it's me instead of some stranger, and trust me sweetie, they wonât know.â
My coworkers did take a liking to him when they met during one of our outings, Sylus just had this charisma about him that sucked everyone in; the mysterious fruit vendor Skye who was absolutely horrid at karaoke. He stole their hearts quickly, and Iâm lucky if they donât ask me at least once a week how heâs doing. Sylus was just magnetic like that, even if you tried your damndest to hate him, thereâs just something about his demeanor thatâs magic.
He has a point here, and itâs killing me to admit heâs right.
âFine,â I snap, âbut absolutely no funny business.â
âIâm not sure what you could possibly mean by that, Kitten.â Sylus lets out a low laugh that makes me want to punch my phone, âIâll be there at 8:30.â
Before I can respond, he quickly hangs up. Iâm left sitting on my bed with racing thoughts of everything that could possibly go wrong. Was bringing Sylus really worth getting this creep off my back? Well, if there was anyone who could scare him off, it would be the leader of Onychinus. Worst case scenario, I have Sylus pull a gun out on him.
I shake my head, trying to clear my stupid thoughts.
I sent him a picture of the invitation, which included the dress code. I wasnât too worried about him making a fool out of me, just the overwhelming anxiety of bringing a top criminal as my date to a work event where we quite literally are attempting to hunt this exact man down.
Trying to trust Sylus isnât the easily discoverable type, I make a miserable attempt to put my mind to rest, and get some sleep.
-
The next week following my abrupt news of a boyfriend was hell. Not to my surprise, word was quickly spread through the Association, and I was constantly being flooded with questions and endless pressure to just âgive them a name!â. I even had Xavier at my desk with questions one morning, and he was always the type to steer away from work related gossip.
Not to mention Sylus himself was being utterly insufferable. He was taking this far too seriously, sending lunch and flowers to my work with paper love notes attached. It was bringing on more attention at work, and every time I told him to stop, heâd just send more extravagant bouquets that cluttered my desk and made the surrounding area smell like a funeral.
At one point, I woke up to a box in the mail. Inside was a black velvet dress, a ruby necklace, and heels. Sending him an angry text about how I have my own clothes, he just responded by transferring 200 dollars into my bank account saying, âGet your nails done too. Match the outfit.â
By Saturday night, I was almost ready for everyone to meet Sylus, just so people would stop with the âfake boyfriend triviaâ while Iâm on the clock, and his annoying attempts at romantic gestures.
The night of, at 8:30 on the dot, I heard a knock at my door.
On the other side was a well dressed Sylus; I think it was the first time I had ever seen him done up so nicely. He wasnât ever one to slack on his looks, but in his black pinstripe suit and red tie that matched my gifted necklace, I had to take a second. Even though he made me constantly want to take my gun and replicate the time I shot him, I could never deny heâs hot. His arguably perfect looks just adds to the hatred.
He looked me up and down, smirking. The dress he had gotten me was backless and stopped at my ankles, with a slit up to my thigh that had me worried that with one wrong move Iâd flash all my coworkers. Opening his mouth to Iâm sure to make a snide comment, I cut him off.
âI have to put on my shoes and that necklace, but then Iâm ready.â I walked over to the coffee table and grabbed the ruby piece that was gifted, struggling with the clasp thanks to the nails I was practically forced to get.
âHere.â Coming up behind me, Sylus took the necklace from my hands. Brushing my hair out of the way, I felt his fingers against my neck as he secured the jewelry with ease. I turned around to face him, and he smiled down at me.
He gestured to the couch, âSit.â
His one word commands were starting to get on my nerves. âWhat?â I glared at him.
Grabbing my shoulder and softly pushing me back, I tumbled onto the couch. Sylus snickered, âI said sit, Kitten.â
Getting on his knees, he picked up my ankle, slipping the heel onto my foot.
âI couldâve done this myself.â Scoffing, I averted my eyes to anywhere that wasnât Sylus on his knees in front of me.
âIâm sure you could with those nails, sweetie.â He hooked the straps around my ankle, and I felt my skin burn red where his fingers danced. It was definitely red with anger.
For sure.
Standing when he was done, Sylus reached a hand out to me. Narrowing my eyes at his hand, I ignored the help. To my dismay, I stood up too fast in heels and lost a bit of my balance. Sylus caught my waist and gave me a smug smile, pulling me into him. âYou look absolutely beautiful tonight, my love.â
I grimaced, pulling away from his grasp and heading to the door. âOh, do not do that. No more of that.â
âWe have to get into character, Iâm just being prepared.â
âBe in character when weâre there. Not here.â
âI have to get into the mindset.â Sylus creeped closer to me, and I stepped back. At this point, I was essentially pinned in between him and the door. âAfter all, I have to practice so I can impress everybody.â He leaned down, his breath fanning against the side of my neck.
âRight.â I rolled my eyes, opening the door behind me and taking a backwards step out. Sylus stumbled at the sudden movement, and I smirked at his loss of composure. âLetâs go, weâll be late.â
-
When we arrived, I felt my heart begin to race. All the mental preparation I had done for this exact night fled my mind as soon as Sylus put the car into park. My worry was not of showing off my new fancy fake boyfriend, it was the fact that I was bringing my new fancy fake boyfriend into an arena that was hunting him. Over the past week Iâve tried telling myself heâs not easily discoverable, I mean, if he was, the Association wouldâve had him tracked down by now. However, knowing my luck, I was preparing for the worst.
Sylus gently placed his hand on my thigh, attempting to give me a reassuring smile, âItâll be okay, Kitten. Just follow my lead.â
Weâre fucked.
He walked around, opening the door for me. His car was clearly the nicest and most expensive out of all the guests tonight, and I knew if anybody saw Iâd never hear the end of it.
When we were nearing the entrance, I sighed, shoving down my pride and grabbing Sylusâ arm, wrapping myself sweetly around his bicep. I watched his lips curve upward into a smug smile, and I suppressed the urge to throw myself off and take my heel to his-
âInvitation please.â Sylus handed the men working the door the two slips of paper, and I begrudgingly walked in clinging to his arm.
âPlaying the characterâ, I thought.
The venue the Ball was being held at was extravagant, with a high, golden ceiling, and golden marble floors.
It was filled to the brim with people that worked for the Association, plus their guests. I winced at the sheer amount of people, automatically going into defense mode due to the overwhelming fact that we were outnumbered.
âSmile, sweetie.â Letting go of his arm, Sylus took his pointer finger and thumb, lightly pulling the corners of my mouth upward.
I nipped at his finger, and he poked my nose as a warning.
I heard someone shriek my name, and I whipped around to see Tara quickly approaching. âOh wow, youâre beautiful!â She wrapped me up in a tight hug, rocking me side to side. Letting go of me just as fast, Tara gasped when she saw Sylus.
âSkye! Oh my gosh itâs you, how sweet!â She fawned over us, and he smiled kindly at her, âYou look lovely tonight, Tara.â If he kept up the nice talk, I was going to put my head through one of the walls.
âHere, come with me. Some of us already have a table together!â
Tara dragged us over to a table where a few of my most nagging coworkers stood around talking. Introducing him to the ones who had never met him, I groaned internally, ready for the torment of questions to begin.
âSo,â Tara dropped the first bomb, âhow long have you two been a thing?â I know this has been weighing on her worse than me all week.
âAbout a month now.â Sylus answered with ease. I tried to suppress a shocked look on my face, because I was planning on doing all the talking; but that continued, them rapid firing questions and Sylus answering all of them as if he had this all thought out. I mean, shit, he was convincing me.
âI have to know how this happened!â One of them said, and Sylus tucked my hair behind my ear, pretending to recall the moment.
âI had feelings for her for a while,â He said, smiling down at me, âand it got to a point where I couldnât take it anymore. It was spur of the moment, but I showed up at her door in the middle of the night and had to ask her if she felt the same.â
Damn. He was good.
All the girls squealed, âThat's so romantic!â
I placed my hand on Sylusâ chest, batting my eyelashes up at him, âIâm gonna go get a drink, dâyou want anything?â He grabbed my hand, matching my energy, and kissing my knuckles, âNo, sweetie, thatâs quite alright. Iâll stay here and entertain your friends.â
All of them cooed at the sight, probably thinking we were so lovesick for each other it hurt. Well, it did hurt, this whole thing was a pain in my ass I needed to be over.
I grabbed a glass of wine from the drink table, the group out of sight. Sighing, I resisted the urge to down the glass all at once. While I was uncomfortable, I couldnât deny everything was going well. Everyone was pleased, so I tried to relax.
âThat's a pretty necklace,â I heard from behind me, âis it new?â
Nevermind.
Turning around, there stood Nicholas. His eyelids drooped, and he reeked of wine.
âWhat did you say?â I asked, looking around for the quickest exit route.
âI said I liked your necklace. Is it new?â
God, does this twerp have any other material?
âYes, it is.â A low voice said, and I felt an arm wrap around my waist. My head shot up to meet Sylus in the eyes; I guess my face was screaming, âHelp me!â, because he gave my side a soft squeeze of reassurance.
âOh.â Was all Nicholas replied, shooting his eyes back and forth between Sylus and I. In his head, I imagined the pieces clicking together. âThis is it,â I thought, âfinally heâll leave me alone!â
âThis song is nice⌠Would you care to dance?â There were no thoughts behind his eyes. This guy was genuinely dense. I couldâve sworn my jaw dropped at his stupidity, and Sylus chuckled next to me.
âSo sorry, but tonight sheâs mine.â Swiftly sweeping me away, Nicholas and my glass of wine were quickly left behind.
âWhy donât you dance with me instead, sweetie?â Sylus said, leading me to the open floor where people were dancing to the soft classical music.
Sylus put my hand on his shoulder, intertwining my other hand with his. Placing his hand on my lower back, he pulled me in closer to him.
âLook at me.â
His eyes stared into mine, and there was something behind them I couldnât quite place my finger on. We started slowly ballroom dancing in our own little spot on the floor, a bit away from everyone else. As much as I wanted to strangle this man, I could relax a little in his arms. He just felt safe sometimes.
Sometimes.
âYouâre doing good tonight.â Sylus said, still looking into my eyes.
âThanks.â I started playing with the hair on the nape of his neck, âSo where do we go from here?â
He raised a brow, âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know what I mean.â
âI really donât think I do, Kitten.â
âHow am I going to tell my coworkers that we âbroke upâ right after this? Theyâll be suspicious.â
âWe could keep doing this for a while.â Sylus shrugged, smirking.
Groaning, I slammed my head on his shoulder, âTonight was bad enough, I canât do this for any longer.â
âDo you have a better idea?â
He was right. I didnât have a better idea.
-
So we did just that.
I was going to give it two months. Then, it would say we were together for three months total, which looked like a completely reasonable time to test run a relationship and then call it quits.
At first, I was completely miserable. I already couldnât stand Sylus as a friend, how could I stand him as my âboyfriendâ? After that night at the Ball, to my dismay, he completely won everybody over. It made me feel like I had to put more effort into faking all of this.
The extravagant gifts sent to my work started getting sent to my place too. I told him he didnât have to send them to me outside of work, let alone at all, but he always insisted so he could âstay in characterâ.
Whether it was convincing me to let him take me out to fancy places, like dinner or a show, it was always just to keep him âin characterâ. I think he just liked using that excuse so I would be forced to hang out with him and not be able to deny or complain about it.
Though, after a bit, it became easy to slip into a groove.
I started to not mind the talk about Sylus; everything started to become bearable, and dare I say it, kind of fun.
We had played with the claw machines once, and he won a white cat plushie. Jokingly, I had told him it looks exactly like him, and snapped a picture of the cat next to his face to prove a point.
I made that photo my wallpaper, to make things more realistic. It freaked me out for a while whenever Iâd open my phone, but I came to like it after a while. Sylus looked kind of cute in the photo, his expression mocking the plushies. He looked kind, warm, a soft look on his face you didnât see on him often. The more I saw the photo, the more it made me smile.
I began looking forward to his calls, his texts. Heâd call me to say good morning, or tell me goodnight, even if he was in the middle of a meeting. The âfake datesâ became less uncomfortable as I grew more accustomed to the situation we had put ourselves into. The roles we were playing came easier and easier with time.
Which was causing a problem.
It wasnât hard to notice the way my body would flush when he touched me, or how my once strong demeanor around him would start to falter. Words and actions of his that would be fast to anger me, quickly changed into something else.
I was starting to care about him. How annoying.
There was one day when Sylus decided he was going to pick me up from work. âYour coworkers will think it's cute.â He had said, and who was I to deny a free ride home.
He showed up on his bike in his leather jacket, in all his badass glory. Leaning against the bike, he stood up straight and smiled at me when I came outside. As time had gone on, Sylus was slowly becoming less hard and uncaring towards me. He began treating me like I was fragile, always so gentle with me. Him getting into character I suppose.
Sylus held his hand out towards me, and when I took it, he pulled me into his chest. I squealed, laughing at the sudden gesture.
âTheyâre looking,â He said, glancing at a few of my coworkers still inside, watching us intensely, âKiss me.â
I choked, âWhat?â
He grabbed my chin, tilting it up slightly. He cocked his head to the side a bit, almost as if to ask, âis this okay?â.
Nodding my head yes, Sylus smirked before leaning down and pressing his lips against mine. For how aggressive he can be as the leader of Onychinus, the kiss was unusually soft. I had imagined kissing him, for all of this, and I never expected him to be the type to be so kind and gentle.
My blood was rushing in my ears and I thought I was going to melt under his hands. I didnât realize just how bad I subconsciously wanted this until it was happening, and I wanted more. I wanted to kiss him so hard I could steal the air from his lungs, I wanted to grip his shirt so tightly my knuckles turned white because I could finally have him.
When he pulled away, and kissed the corner of my eye, I knew I was fucked.
I didnât just care about him, I wanted him. I wanted Sylus to be mine, I wanted this to be real, I wanted-
No, I couldnât want anything.
It would never work. Our lives were too different, we were too different, everything would be doomed from the start. He was a faraway dream that would never come true. He could never be what I wanted.
I always wanted security, someone stable and safe. Sylus could never give me that.
So why do I want him so badly?
-
It was my friend's birthday party.
I had invited Sylus, because what had originally been a fake relationship to get a creep coworker off my back, spread like a wildfire to a fake relationship that was now known by all my friends.
I only invited him because I knew it would be strange if I showed up without him.
After he kissed me, and my feelings became a living hell to deal with, I started to pull back; started to psych myself out mentally, constantly spending time just trying to convince myself how bad we would be for each other. Trying to will myself to hate him again, go back to where I was two months ago. When Sylus was a nuisance, an annoying pest.
I donât even really think he noticed. Or if he did, I couldnât tell.
When we got to the party, the music and laughter could be heard from outside, a drastic change from the almost silent car ride. Sylus tried to make conversation, and I shut him down almost every time.
We walked in, and my friends all greeted him with easy familiarity. They gave him hugs, pats on the back, and he was welcomed effortlessly.
I stood a distance away as he laughed with my friends, and my chest began to hurt. Guilt, dread, I felt doomed. He wasnât meant to be here, he was never meant to be here. Sylus doesnât belong with my friends. Sylus doesnât belong with me.
None of this is real. All of this is one little lie that spun into a web of something so much bigger, and Iâm stuck in it.
He looks happy with them, happy with my friends. Happy in my space, with my people. How could he? Heâs an intruder, he knows it.
I knew tonight was the night I was done. This couldnât go on any longer. No more playing house with Sylus, no more pretending. Weâre adults, and this whole thing was so childish, and it ends now.
I stepped outside, sitting on the back patio. The night air was cold, and I wasnât sure if it was the sharp air of my distress that was making my lungs constrict.
âThere you are.â
I didnât turn around to meet the voice, just kept staring into the trees ahead.
Sylus stood beside me, running his fingers through the top of my hair. I relished the feeling, âone last time, itâs okayâ.
He didnât ask any questions, didnât ask why I was out here, if I was okay. I was happy for that, it could give me another reason to be mad at him. To hate him again. To try and rile up all my old feelings, stir old bitterness.
âI want to go home.â I finally said, breaking the silence.
We got in the car, this time he didnât try to speak. His face was hard again, the soft look long gone. I think, in a way, he knew too. He knows this is for the better.
I said goodbye, told him goodnight before he left. Told him to drive safely.
It had been two months, thatâs what I gave him. It was time for it to be over anyways. I changed my wallpaper, changed his name back. I didnât care if I had to deal with Nicholas at my job anymore, anything was better than the gutted feeling I got from every interaction with Sylus. Nothing was worth that.
The next day, it was radio silence. For the first time in two months, there was nothing. No good morning, no texts throughout the day, no calls to tell me goodnight; and that just continued. For days. Silence.
I had perfected the speech I was going to tell my coworkers, âWe gave it our best, but it just wasnât going to work out between us.â It was reassurance for them, and myself.
It just wasnât going to work out between us.

FORMER MANAGER
PART 5: PURITY.
Mashiro x Male Reader (4K length)
You observed your face in the reflection of the bathroom mirror, your messy hair, the marks of the sheets on your cheeks and some visible dark circles bordering your eyes, it definitely had not been your best night. You had barely slept, tossing and turning in bed all night while your head was spinning around the scene with Jang Wonyoung.
The image of her crying wouldn't disappear from your mind no matter how hard you tried, but how did this happen in the first place? The last memory you had of her was when you said goodbye years ago before returning home, back then she also cried, but this time it was totally different, her look of disappointment on you disturbed you even more than her tears.
You catched some water from the sink, throwing it over your face, trying to clear yourself up and wake up a little, because you had to continue with your life and your work, you would find a free time lapse to be able to fix this problem.
You showered, fixed your hair, and hid the traces of a terrible night on your face as well as you could before getting dressed and leaving your apartment heading to the company.
You arrived at the building where as soon as you entered, your boss was waiting for you, folder in hand, and while you both walked he explained the itinerary of the day and the schedule for the upcoming weeks. Kep1erâs members had returned from their last shows abroad, there had been a few changes at the management level, and a new comeback was already planned, so the work was going to be hard and intense.
Both of you stopped in front of one of the practice rooms, a light touch of your coworker knuckles on the door and you entered inside, a group of girls who were stretching stared at you.
âGood morning girls.â Your partner began to speak. âBefore starting preparations for this new album I want to introduce you to your new full-time manager, starting on today he will take care of all of you and about everything you need.â He exclaimed, indicating for you to introduce yourself to them with a gesture of his hand.
You bowed them instantly. âNice to meet you! I will be at your service from now on, I hope we get along well.â You said a little nervous, a feeling that disappeared when you saw the smiles and applause they offered you. âNice to meet you, please treat us well!â They all said in unison bowing to you aswell.
"Good." Your boss interrupted. âThe dance teacher will come right away to show you and start practicing the new choreographies, I hope the best from all of you. âFighting!â He said with his fist, before handing you the information folder and leaving the room.
You watched him leave and when you looked back you jumped when you realized how the Kep1er girls had surrounded you, occupying any personal space you could have, their eyes analyzing you carefully.
"Hello!" One of them greeted with a huge smile on her face. âI'm the leader Yujin, nice to meet you, it's incredible, it's the first time I have such a young manager.â You smiled shyly, uncomfortable with the circle of people that had formed around you.
âWow, can I call you oppa?â A girl with pink hair and rounded cheeks asked next to her, if you were not mistaken it was Kim Chaehyun, you nodded affirmatively at her question causing her to laugh.
You noticed that penetrating eyes were focused on you to the point that you realized that gaze was passing through you, you made eye contact with it, increasing your nervousness.
âIs something wrong, Xiaoting?â You asked softly making the mentioned girl blink a few times. âDo you know my name already?â She questioned surprised. âOur new manager has studied a lot!â Dayeon shouted, starting to laugh and causing the rest of the members to laugh.
âLook at his dark eyes, he sure hasn't been able to sleep all night!â Hikaru joked, releasing one of her particular laughs that resonated throughout the room, increasing the volume and joy of the rest of the members.
These girls were really loud and restless, they were going to give you a lot of headaches, yet a smile was drawn on your lips and for a while you forgot about the rest of your problems.
The dance teacher appeared and the morning passed with the girls memorizing and practicing the new choreographies, so you took the opportunity to go to your office to work on other aspects such as contacting the wardrobe team, making venue reservations where the filming would be done, hire the recording equipment.
The days went by and with the amount of work you had it was impossible to even think about Wonyoung. Your relationship with the members of Kep1er was improving and due to the characteristics of these girls, in just a week it seemed like you had been together since their debut, and that was something that relieved you and made everything much more enjoyable.
This day in question the girls would spend it in the recording studio, testing their vocals and recording the songs for the new album, so really your presence there was not very significant so your task for the day was to clean and organize everything in the house.
If you already hated doing housework, doing it in a home full of girls made you hate it excessively. A multitude of clothes scattered throughout the rooms, boxes and cardboard in every corner.
You were infinitely grateful to Bahiyyih for trying to keep the house in order, saving you some work, but the whirlwind that was Chaehyun Dayeon and Hikaru was simply unstoppable.
You finished off the apartment Yujin Bahiyyih Chaehyun and Xiaoting shared and headed upstairs to start cleaning the next one. You hadn't been there for long but there was a room that you had not yet accessed, it was a two-bed bedroom that did not belong to anyone in the group but that had serious signs of having been habited before, it was perfectly arranged and there were still clothes hanging in the closet.
You inspected said clothes, leaving them on one of the beds, you opened the drawers looking to know what, and this really had you confused.
âW-W-Who are you? What are you doing with my clothes?â A sudden voice surprised and scared you, almost making you fall on the bed when you turned to look at the door frame of the room, finding a small girl with brown hair and a rather cute appearance carrying a cardboard box in her hands, looking at you in a scared way.
âThat's what I should ask, how did you get in here? The door has a password, and what's with your clothes?â You were trying to appear as calm as possible but you were really uneasy with that presence.
âDon't tell meâŚA SASAENG!â You both shouted at the same time, pointing your fingers at each other.  "WHAT? ME?" Now your fingers were pointing towards yourselves.
âIt's over I'm going to call the police.â The girl said, dropping the box and taking her mobile phone out of her pants pocket.
âThat's exactly what I'm going to do, look at this.â You said, taking out the company ID, surprising the girl.
"Huh?"
.
.
.
.
âI'm sorry again, I had no idea you were the new manager.â The girl said with her head down, looking at the ground, feeling guilty for the previous misunderstanding.
âThe mistake was mine for not having recognized you before, Mashiro-shi.â Now you knew who this room belonged to.
Apparently, and after left the grou, both Mashiro and Yeseo had been terribly busy with their new group and their own activities that they had been coming and going to the house making small moves of their things. However some things of their property were still there.
âIf you need help with yourâŚâ
âOh no no, please, I'm sure you're very busy, I don't want to bother you.â She commented, making notable gestures with her hands. You smiled at how adorable that was.
âThe rest of the members say that you and Yeseo will continue to be part of Kep1er foreverâŚâ You commented, bending down to pick up the cardboard box from the floor and put it on the bed, opening it. âSo now I'm also your manager, okay Mashiro-chan?â You smiled warmly at her causing her cheeks to turn a deep pink color.
âO-O-Okayâ She agreed shyly, approaching you and helping you pack more clothes from her closet.
Together you cleared out the closet and packed all the clothes, and you organized the rest of the room and cleaned it. You glanced at Mashiro from time to time, even with that strange first impression you had with her, you really thought she was a super adorable girl. Her small stature, her beautiful face and the dimples that were marked on her cheeks reaffirmed it.
âWhat do you think of the members?â She asked casually while doing her task, your gaze drifted towards the ceiling, sketching a slight smile after a few seconds of thought.
âNoisy.â You responded simply causing her to giggle, covering her mouth with one of her hands.
âI understand you perfectly.â She supported you.
âBut they are really amazing.â You continued. âThey spend the day laughing and making a fuss but they don't lower the effort they put into their practices one bit, sometimes I envy them. I would also like to enjoy my work like they do.â Out of the corner of my eye you could notice a small smile melancholy on her face, so you decided not to say anything else and continue with the cleaning.
You walked over to one of the nightstands next to one of the beds to open the drawers, see what they kept and see if there was anything else that needed to be packed.
âDon't open that!â Mashiro screamed hysterically, throwing herself on the bed trying to stop you but you had already opened the drawer. You looked at her confused, even more so when she threw her hands over her face trying to hide herself, while her ears turned red.
You looked down, looking at the vibrator that was inside the drawer, blushing too and quickly moving away, falling on your ass to the floor.
"I'm sorry."Â You whispered embarrassed, unable to look up, noticing how your face was burning.
âNooooooâŚhow embarrassing.â Mashiro sobbed, rolling on the bed. You grabbed a lock of your hair, analyzing the situation, looking for the right words for a moment like this.
âThere is nothing to be ashamed of Mashiro, it is something totally normal for someone your age andâŚMashiro?â You were absorbed as you looked up to see directly at the girl who was still sobbing, covering her face with one hand, while the other was now rubbing her crotch over her pants. So those sounds weren't sobs, they were moans.
You saw how she relaxed her body and lie down on the bed. The hand that covered her face no longer did so, she was now looking at you clearly, intently, a look very different from what you had seen from her before.
âIt has been such a hard, stressful and emotional weeks. Leaving one group to enter another, new members, comeback, and performances. Even now all the responsibility of being a leader falls on my shoulders.â
âMashiroâŚâ Your words were interrupted by a new moan.
âAnd I forgot my stress reliever during the move, I tried using my fingers but they didn't have the same effectâŚâ You turned your gaze to the vibrator and took it in your hands, Mashiro's eyes did not take their eyes off the device. You turned it on, listening to the vibrations it produced, making Mashiro groan in despair.
âYou said before that you were also my managerâŚâ The Japanese girl began to say. âSo, I need your help, manager oppa, pleaseâŚâ You swallowed after hearing that request of deep need in her tone of voice.
You stood up and approached the bed, sitting on the edge near Mashiro, who lowered the zipper of her sweatshirt a little, revealing a bit of the shirt she was wearing underneath and then, moving against the bed, she managed to lower her pants until her underwear was visible.
âYou are very wet Mashiro-chan.â You commented looking at the huge stain that had appeared on her panties. âYou really are so needyâŚâ
She didn't respond but she brought her hand back to where the stain was now, caressing herself again with circular movements, closing her eyes enjoying her own touch.
When she stopped she opened her eyes to look deeply at you, eyes that were screaming for your help. You sighed and got even closer to her body, vibrator in hand, gently bringing it to her desired area, coming into contact causing Mashiro's back to arch due to excitement.
âYes, pleaseâŚâ She continued asking needily.
You pushed aside the fabric of her panties, visualizing her wonderful pink pussy completely flooded that was crying out for pleasure.
The sex toy now caressed Mashiro's folds mercilessly, forcing her to moan loudly, her eyes closed again enjoying the waves of pleasure that ran through her body.
That scene was fucking erotic for you, so much so that a huge bulge peeked out from between your pants. With your free hand you managed to free that bulge from outside your clothes, however it was somewhat difficult to satisfy both of you at the same time.
A naughty idea crossed your mind. If you were busy offering pleasure to Mashiro she was free to give it to you, so you took her hand closest to you and placed it around your cock.
Upon feeling that she opened her eyes again, offering you a small smile when she knew your intentions, grabbing your penis tightly and beginning to move her hand up and down constantly.
âOppa hentaiâŚâ She whispered, biting her lip, watching how she was masturbating you.
âIt's your fault in the first placeâŚâ You responded, emitting the occasional small moan caused by her touch, and lowering the zipper of her sweatshirt completely with your free hand, allowing yourself to caressing her stomach and her hips.
You threw the vibrator to the side of the bed and began to caress her pussy with your own hand, separating her folds with your fingers and inserting a couple of them inside causing a squeal of surprise from her.
âShit oppaâŚit feels so goodâŚâ
âA girl as adorable as you talking so dirty.â You said increasing the pace of your caresses on her pussy, feeling how your hand became wet with Mashiro's fluids.
âYou love when I talk dirty, right oppa?â She asked continuing the caresses on your penis. âIt hasn't stopped growingâŚâ
You smiled, leaning over her body, placing a few kisses across her bare stomach. She released her grip on your cock to allow you to position yourself more comfortably on top of her, slipping your hands under her shirt touching everything within reach.
Mashiro slowly melted under your body, moaning louder and louder as your fingers caressed her tits. She was breathing heavily and her hair fell over her forehead giving it an even sexier touch, her entire face was flushed and hot.
Due to the constant movement of your bodies on each other there was a moment where your cock rubbed against Mashiro's pussy, tensing her body and placing her hands against your chest, pushing you away slightly.
You raised an eyebrow in confusion, realizing how hot this whole scene had become and how you had gotten carried away with it.
âI'm sorry if IâŚ
âI have only used that vibrator⌠I have never had anything inside me beyond my fingers, I am completely a virgin.â She admitted, looking away embarrassed.
"Itâs okay." You whispered softly, offering her a smile, caressing her right cheek with your hand. She took your hand and let herself be caressed by you.
âIt's really strange and we just met...but I feel very comfortable with you, oppa. Although I don't think I'm ready to cross that line yet, I'm sorry.â
âYou don't have to apologize for anything.â You leaned your head over her, kissing her lips, being instantly reciprocated by her, lightly biting her lower lip, drawing a moan from her and allowing your tongue to explore every corner of Mashiro's mouth.
âOppa.â A thread of saliva separated your mouth from Mashiro's. âI need an orgasm.â
You smiled, recovering the vibrator lost in some corner of the bed, activating it again, this time with more power making the girl's body tremble.
âOH FUCK!â Squeals and moans came non-stop from the idol's mouth as you rubbed the toy again and again over her weak area.
You alternated the vibrator with the caresses that you provided with your hands. You lay down on the bed next to Mashiro without stopping masturbating her, she quickly took your cock again with one of her hands and now you were both pleasuring each other.
You inserted two of your fingers inside her completely tight pussy, stretching it slightly feeling her walls contract against your fingers. The girl's hips moved unconsciously as the moans did not stop and her grip on your cock tightened.
You then stroked her clit with your thumb, which was like touching the self-destruct button on Mashiro's body. You touched and pressed her clit as much as you could until her back arched again and a huge scream escaped her mouth.
Her body hit the mattress again, her chest rising and falling excitedly. It took her a few seconds to catch her breath and recover from that orgasm, she turned to look at you and you quickly wiped away some tears that were now flowing from her eyes with your hand.
âGodâŚyou're better than any toy, oppa.â Despite continuing to pant, her smile was wide, she laughed at herself for the situation she found herself in.
You laughed, also flattered but somewhat embarrassed by her comment. You tried to get up to get out of bed but Mashiro immediately stopped you and forced you to lie down, surprising you with her sudden reaction.
âWait, you're not done yet.â She said and then you looked down at your penis.
âPlease let me help you, oppa.â Mashiro demanded in distress, because she had been able to free herself thanks to your touch and you, on the other hand, were still hard.
How were you going to refuse that, you thought, lowering the clothes that covered your lower area to your ankles, leaving your member in full view. Mashiro was stunned to see it like that.
âIt's even biggerâŚâ She whispered, wrapping her hand around it again, beginning to cover it completely and therefore starting the massage.
You let out a moan and bit your lip. Under normal conditions it would take you long enough to cum to get a long treatment, but the hard work of these last few days had taken its toll on you too. You hadn't downloaded for days, even weeks, and none of the Iz*One girls had crossed your path during this time, so you and your friend were especially sensitive at the moment.
That Mashiro was inexperienced was obvious, not only because she had confessed to being a virgin, it was obvious that it was the first time she had masturbated someone.
She did it delicately but nervously, her hand trembled on your cock, so you decided to help her, placing one of your hands on hers, guiding her on top of you. This helped her to calm down and gain confidence, copying the rhythm that you were setting.
You moved your hand away once you saw her more prepared and in response to that she wrapped her other hand around your penis as well.
Now both of the girl's hands were working on your erect dick, covering the entire length between them, with slow and delicate movements that made you shudder.
Your moans began to get uncontrolled due to her touch, giving her more and more encouragement and causing the pace of masturbation to increase.
Her two hands worked now at high speed on your penis, with enveloping movements, noticing how it swelled and began to tremble.
âShit...Mashiro-chan I'm about to...â You couldn't finish the warning when the first shot was propelled upwards, surprising the girl by seeing that white liquid escape from the tip of your penis.
After the first, the rest of the shots followed, progressively decreasing the intensity with each one until finally there was not a single drop left inside you.
Mashiro's hands raised the skin of your penis one last time, observing the brilliance that the tip of your penis now offered. Finally she let you go and you were able to sit up on the bed, seeing the mess that had formed on your abdomen, now covered in your own sperm.
You diverted your gaze towards Mashiro whose eyes did not stop observing that increasingly sticky area.
You moved your hand towards it, taking some of the sperm with your fingers and looked back at the girl, who now looked back at you.
"Do you want to try it?" You asked, smiling sideways, sneaking into her thoughts. She did not utter a word due to shyness and embarrassment but nodded affirmatively.
You brought your fingers closer to her face and she closed her eyes, opening her mouth, allowing you to insert them inside, licking and tasting your seed. Her tongue moved between your fingers, wetting them but absorbing all the liquid they were impregnated with.
She opened her mouth again for you to remove your fingers and you looked at each other.
"It is...you are...you taste delicious..." She admitted self-consciously but happy and satisfied. âC-C-Can I take some more?â
A few seconds later you had Mashiro leaning over you licking all the remains of sperm that were on your abdomen and thighs. That was making you hard again but you knew you had a line that you must not to cross.
The idol's tongue cleaned you completely, savoring every last bit of liquid she could get, repeating to herself how delicious it tasted. Once she was over with you, you left the room for a moment to go to the bathroom, cleaning yourself and put your clothes back on properly, when you returned Mashiro was also dressed.
You inserted the vibrator into the cardboard box, camouflaged between several layers of clothing, and took it into your arms, despite the girl's insistence that she could carry the box.
You went down together to the street, parked there was one of Mashiro's new group's cars waiting to pick her up.
"Thanks for everything, manager oppa." Mashiro smiled sweetly at you.
"Keep this between us, okay?" She nodded briskly heading to the car, turning around before opening the door.
"I'll think about you the next time." Those words caught you off guard, making you blush.
You watched as the car disappeared into the distance of the street, blending into the traffic. You sighed and walked back up the stairs to the apartment, there was still a lot to clean.
Just when you were about to grab the broom again the phone in your pocket started ringing, you picked up after reading the name of the caller and brought it to your ear.
âFinally, I only had to call you 7 times to get a callback.â You heard a sleepy yawn from the other side.
âI've been non-stop for months, many performances, shootings, ceremony awards, and exhausting trips, you know. I deserved a good restful sleepâŚof 14 hours.â
âOf course, we must keep the star Ahn Yujin in good condition.â Your laughter dissipated as you took a more serious tone. âI need to talk to you.â
âYeah, I know. See you in like 1 hour? I will send you the location.â
âSure, see you.â
You hung up the call and heaved a long sigh, rushing to get all the work done. You had a date in an hour.

hallmarks of sisterhood

putellas!reader. r mediates a fight between her sisters. they don't realize they're tearing her apart in the process. at least, not until they ruin an important night for her. can they make it up to her? fluff & angst.
-------
Being significantly younger than your sisters, you were the true baby of the family, and were treated as such. You were already a pretty sensitive person, and the overprotective tendencies of the entire family only increased this. You were quite different from both your sisters. Alba was an extrovert, always talking, always laughing, never thinking too hard about anything. Alexia was quieter in public, but always loud at home in an attempt to match Albaâs energy. The competitive gene only seemed to skip you, and you hated conflict. Any type of it. You didnât like yelling, you didnât like arguments, and you couldnât stand when people were mad at you.Â
It made sense then, that youâd always been the mitigator between your sisters. They were always fighting growing up, and it took a very small you to break up the fights that the teenage versions of them would get into, often shoving your small body in between theirs and singing a song so loudly they had no choice but to stop arguing. If the singing didnât work, then youâd cry, and that always worked.Â
As you got older, your role changed slightly. You were still the mitigator, but more because you were logical and smart and both of them could normally trust you to be objective. You didnât really enjoy it, but you hated it more when they werenât speaking to each other, so you did what you could to resolve their fights easily.Â
All of this considered, you were not surprised to catch yourself in an argument between them yet again. This one wasnât super similar to the others, though, in that it was much more emotionally charged. Both Alexia and Alba seemed angrier at each other than normal, and you didnât know why. Still, you tried to fix it, as best you could.Â
-------
âI cannot believe you, Alba.â Alexia sighed, shaking her head at her other sister.Â
âDonât try to guilt trip me, Ale, this isnât my fault. I told you before there was a chance Iâd have to go to this conference.â Alba shot back.
âYou donât have to go, you are choosing to go. So you can hook up with that coworker you're seeing.âÂ
Alba flushed red with anger.Â
âLetâs calm down, guys,â you began, shifting uncomfortably in your seat in the corner of the sectional. Neither girl paid you any mind.Â
âI am going for work, Alexia, I wouldnât sleep with anyone at a work conference.â
âOh, yes of course, youâre so above that. You are notorious for not hooking up with people in inappropriate situations Alba, how could I forget. It was only 4 of my teammates you slept with? And how many of my other friends?âÂ
âYou are such a-â
âStop.â You cut in. âAlexia, that was mean. Alba, sheâs just disappointed because she was looking forward to spending time with everyone.â You cut in, trying to cool the rising temperature of the room.Â
âNo, I am disappointed because we made a commitment to do this for Mami and now sheâs backing out. Like always.â
âWhat is that supposed to mean?â Alba scoffed.Â
âThe last trip to Ibiza. Motherâs day last year. My 25th birthday,â Alexia began to list, counting the events off on her fingers rather condescending.Â
âGuys, please calm down.â You attempted.Â
âWill you ever get over me missing your 25th birthday? Or are you going to have it engraved on your tombstone? âMy sister missed my birthday once and I never shut up about it.ââ Alba yelled, getting to her feet and walking closer to where Alexia was sitting at the kitchen counter.Â
When Alexia rose to meet her, you stood nervously, too, moving a bit closer. âWhy donât we all stay seated?â You tried.Â
Both of them continued to ignore you, as if you werenât even there. âThat is not the point, Alba.âÂ
âNo, Ale, the point is that only your career is important. Everyone has to drop everything for football, but what I do doesnât matter, and I have to bend over backwards to make things work with your insane schedule. The world doesnât revolve around you, Alexia.â
âOh my god, Alba. You are such a bitch.â Alexia sighed, rolling her eyes in a way she knew would make the younger girl furious. Â
âYou are the bitch, Alexia. A selfish, bossy, mean bitch,â Alba yelled, crossing her arms and taking a step closer to the older girl.Â
âAlba, I swear to god,â Alexia threw back, the volume of her voice making you flinch. You stepped in between them, forcing them to both back up a bit.Â
âPlease stop shouting.â You pleaded, looking between them. Both of them turned to you, annoyed.
âGo somewhere else if itâs bothering you, pequeĂąa! Adults argue. Grow up.â Alexia yelled, sending a glare your way. You stopped back, blinking away tears, looking incredibly hurt. Alexia sighed. âSorry, nena, I didnât mean-âÂ
It was too late, though, you were pushing past her towards the door of her house. âNo, whatever. Iâll go. Solve your argument by yourselves for once.â You snapped.Â
âNice job, Ale, you made the el bebe cry.â Alba said mockingly.Â
âShut your mouth, Alba. PequeĂąa, come back,â Alexia called, but the door was already slamming shut behind you.Â
You wiped at your eyes furiously, getting into your car. Youâd always hated how sensitive you were, how anyone raising their voice at you made you cry. You couldnât argue, couldnât disagree without dissolving into tears. Normally, angry tears. Youâd always been like this, and your sisters often made fun of it, but were aware of the fact that you hated yelling, and tried to avoid doing so. Even when they were fighting with each other. Today got too out of control, though, both of them taking this specific issue very seriously.Â
Theyâd have to figure it out themselves, this time. You were done with this. They knew how you felt about conflict, and yet they always put you in the middle. It was exhausting and hurtful being caught in between them. They were adults, they could solve this argument.Â
You and Eli didnât live far from Alexia, and you reached home before you were really ready to. You needed to erase all evidence of your tears from your face before heading inside, because Eli could not know about this. You and your sisters did not tell on each other, for one thing. For another, there was a possibility the trip in question could be rescheduled and you didnât want to ruin the surprise.Â
You checked your face in the mirror, took a deep breath, denied Alexiaâs phone call, and headed inside, prepared to pretend that nothing was wrong.Â
------
You got past your mother with very few questions asked, as she was distracted reading over Alexiaâs new Nike contracts. Your sister still had Eli read all her contracts, a habit you and Alba teased her about often.Â
Eli did come knocking, though, only a few hours later, while you were in your room getting some homework done. âNena?â She called from the hallway, not hearing a response to her knock.Â
Still, you didnât say anything, so she pushed the door open, only to find you asleep at your desk, your head resting on a pile of photographs, your computer opened up to photoshop. A black and white photo of your sister at training was pulled up, and Eli quickly averted her eyes, knowing very well she wasnât supposed to see this particular assignment until you were done.
âMija,â Eli said, covering her eyes as she heard you stir. âGo to bed, itâs late, and you are exhausted.âÂ
âDo not look, Mami!â You cried, sitting up completely and quickly flipping everything over and shutting your computer.Â
âIâm not!â Eli replied, laughing at how secretive you were about these photos.Â
âOkay, everything is away.â You said, standing to give your mother a hug before getting into bed. She squeezed you tight, as she always did, kissing your cheek before letting go.Â
âGoodnight,â she said, giving you a kind smile.Â
âGoodnight mami,â you replied, knowing she was smiling because she knew you were about to get back on your computer as soon as she left the room.Â
âOh, do you know why your sisterâs are fighting? I texted the groupchat with them, and they both replied to me separately.â Eli asked with an eye roll, quite used to your sistersâ antics.Â
âSomething dumb, probably.â You said with an unconvincing laugh. Your mother gave you a weird look, like she didn't believe you, but didnât push it.Â
As soon as she was out of the room, you were, in fact, back on your computer, finishing up the final touches on a photo of Alexia. You were really too excited to be preoccupied with your sisters at the moment. You were in school studying photography, and after a recent exhibition at your school, a gallery in Barcelona had reached out and asked you to shoot a series for them to display. Theyâd given you full creative control, which was an insane amount of trust to put into a 20 year old, and you were determined not to mess it up.Â
If that meant staying up late making sure every photo was perfect in the next couple days, so be it. You were proud of this work, and that wasnât really a common feeling for you. Youâd grown up in the shadow of your two sisters. Alexia was the best female footballer in the world, and Alba was⌠Alba. Everyone loved her. Nothing you ever did seemed to really make anyone pay attention, except for your Mami. Eli had always been careful to celebrate your and Albaâs accomplishments, like she celebrated Alexiaâs, even if they werenât of the same magnitude. Your sisters were a bit better than the rest of your family and friends, paying attention to what you did, but it always felt a bit like your mother was making them do so.Â
This was your chance to do something impressive of your own. Something that everyone could understand, everyone could be impressed by. It was an opportunity you were not about to waste. You didnât realize the potential that other people had, though, to ruin it for you.Â
------
The next few days were busy. When you werenât working on your photos, making sure they were perfectly edited and printed properly, you were worrying about what people would think about them. Or you were trying to pick the perfect outfit for Saturday evening, the opening of the gallery. There wasnât a ton of time for you to respond to Alexiaâs repetitive apologies, or to Albaâs pleading for you to be on her side. It was annoying, really, that during such an important and stressful week, they couldnât leave you out of their argument.Â
You finally had enough on Friday, pulling up the groupchat with both of them in it, and sending a rather harsh message. It wasnât like you to be harsh and snap at them, and you were hoping they would get the message that theyâd upset you, and you wanted to be left out of this.Â
If one of you texts me one more time about this idiotic fight, I am going to tell Mami that it was you two who dented her car, not the neighbor backing into it. I am so tired of being pulled into the middle of this. Both of you apologize to each other for being mean, and get over it.Â
You hoped that would be the end of it. When your phone buzzed a few minutes later, though, you knew that had been a naive hope.Â
Alexia had responded first.Â
It should not be hard to pick a side when I am right, nena.
Alba responded after that.Â
You always let Alexia get away with things youâd yell at me about. You can both apologize to me when you are ready.
You werenât really sure how Alba had decided that youâd sided with Alexia, but you certainly were not going to be apologizing to her anytime soon. You left them both on read, figuring theyâd make up before the gallery opening tomorrow night.
-------
You were up pretty much the entire night before the gallery. This time, not because anything needed to get done, but because you were nervous. You were thinking about everything that could possibly go wrong. By the time morning rolled around, you slept for maybe a couple hours, and created a decisive list of every bad thing that could happen today.Â
You actually hadnât thought of everything, but you wouldnât know that until later.Â
Youâd passed out just as the sun had started to rise, and Eli came in to wake you up only a few hours later.Â
âNena, despierta,â she said softly, setting down a mug of coffee on your nightstand and shaking your shoulder.Â
You bolted upright in bed, and looked around frantically, startling your mother. âAm I late?!â You gasped, moving to get out of your bed as fast as possible.Â
âNo, no, you arenât late. It is only 11. Relax, mija, everything is okay.â Eli soothed, gently pushing you back down onto the bed.Â
You let out a relieved sigh, rubbing at your face with your hands. âSorry.âÂ
âDid you sleep at all?â Eli asked with a disapproving look.Â
âNot much. I tried, I swear, I just couldnât turn my brain off.Â
Your mother patted your cheek reassuringly. âYouâre almost done, nena. Itâs all going to go perfectly.âÂ
You nodded, trying to believe her words. You just had this weird, nagging feeling that something was going to go wrong. There wasnât time to focus on this feeling, though, no matter how much you wanted to. There was simply too much to be done. Accepting the hug your mother offered, you got up, ready to prepare yourself for the long day ahead.
-------
You didnât really think anything of it when you didnât see either of your sisters right away. You were busy greeting other people, family and friends. Some of Alexiaâs teammates had made it, and you spent some time taking in the awestruck expression on Mapiâs face when she saw the singular photo of her included.Â
That was the best part of the whole thing, you decided. Getting to see everyoneâs reactions to seeing themselves up on the wall.Â
The theme was people you loved, in their happy place. The project was joyful and fun, radiating happiness. Looking at the photos made you smile, and you were glad to see that everyone seemed to have the same reaction as they took their time looking at each image.Â
You had Mapi giggling at something Ingrid had said, a candid taken after a Barça game. Ingrid was smiling back at her, like making her girlfriend laugh was the only thing she wanted to do for the rest of her life.Â
You had your Mami, sitting in the stands of one of Alexiaâs games, looking on with pride all over her face. You had her pinching Albaâs cheek, a fond smile on her face as your sister said something that was, no doubt, ridiculous.Â
You had your aunts and your uncles around the dinner table, all laughing hysterically.Â
You had your friends at the beach, all lounging and staring out into the ocean, looking peaceful.Â
You had your best friend sitting in the driver's seat of her car, singing along passionately to her favorite song.Â
More than anyone else, though, you had your sisters.Â
Alexia preparing to take a penalty, determined. Celebrating with her teammates after a goal. Cheekily blowing a kiss to Olga in the stands. Smiling proudly at Vicki after an impressive goal. Proudly wearing the captainâs armband in front of a completely sold out stadium. Leaned against Olga on the couch after a movie night, out cold. She was completely peaceful, with Olga looking down at her adoringly.Â
You had Alba at the school where she taught. Candids of her face, when one of her students got the answer right, or made her laugh. With her dog, holding him up at the aquarium, eye level with one of the dolphins. You had her watching Alexia play, too, a grin on her face that you were sure she was unaware of. Your favorite of Alba was a photo youâd taken in your Mamiâs kitchen, while sheâd been baking. Alba was sneaking a taste of the cake batter, and youâd captured her mid-wink, giving the camera a smile while Eliâs back was turned to her.Â
They hadnât seen any of these photos; youâd almost gone crazy not showing them, and not giving in to them when they begged to see.
Youâd finally managed to break away from a crowd of your friends, having a moment to yourself, when you realized that you still hadnât seen your sisters yet. Aleâs teammates were here. Some of Albaâs friends were here. The whole family was here. You checked your watch, a frown on your face, seeing that they were both already over a half hour late, which was unlike both of them. It was only when you saw Olga looking up at one of the photos she was pictured in, all by herself, that you really got a sinking feeling in your stomach. She was talking to Irene when you walked over and interrupted, gently pulling Olga away from the conversation.Â
âWhere is Ale? Is she coming late?â You asked, confused by the sad look on Olgaâs face.Â
âNo, nena, Iâm sorry. She didnât want to see Alba, so she decided not to come. I tried to convince her to, but she didnât listen.â Olga said delicately. You looked like youâd been hit across the face, honestly, and Olga wanted nothing more than to march home and drag Alexia over here, but she knew better to try to convince the blonde to do something she had decided she wouldnât. âShe said she texted you?âÂ
You pulled your phone out, taking a deep breath when you saw almost identical texts from both of your sisters.Â
Canât make it tonight. Iâll come see it another time. Good luck!Â
Sorry, hermanita, I canât come tonight. Love you.
You had been so excited for them to see their pictures. There was a little note up on the wall, too, a statement thanking everyone for coming. In it, you mentioned being excited to allow your sisters to finally see the photos, as theyâd been begging to for a while now. And they hadnât come.Â
A wave of embarrassment washed over you, your cheeks flushing red. You were angry, too, but you blinked your tears back, looking up at Olga and trying to look more put together than you felt.Â
âNo Alba either.â You said, your voice cracking slightly.Â
âOh, nena, I am so sorry.â Olga whispered, pulling you into a tight hug. It was too soft, and too comforting. You pulled away rapidly, shaking your head.Â
âItâs fine. I donât care.â You said, cutting the brunette off before she could say anything else. âI have to go talk to someone, thank you for coming, Olga.âÂ
You rushed away from your sisterâs girlfriend, focusing on taking deep breaths. You couldnât be sad, not right now. So many people had come here to celebrate you and your work, and you werenât going to ruin it. You could be upset later. It was almost excruciating, pretending that you werenât upset that your sisters hadn't come, but you managed it. You kept up a pretty good façade for the rest of the evening, even when you saw Olga speaking in hushed voices to Irene and Mapi, even when everyone kept asking where Ale and Alba were. You held it together. Because you, unlike them, could pretend that nothing was wrong for the sake of others.Â
-------
Your mother knew you better than anyone. You should have been thrilled, ecstatic. Everything had gone so well. Your photos had been a hit, the owners of the gallery had been thrilled. She realized neither of her other daughters had shown up, but she assumed they had talked that through with you. She wasnât sure what was wrong with you, but when you declined going out with some of your friends as the night came to an end, Eli knew something wasnât right.Â
She had every intention of letting you come to her, but you werenât talking. As everyone began to file out of the gallery, saying their final goodbyes, Eli overheard you tell your friends you were going to go home because you were tired. You didn't say a single word to her aside from telling her that youâd see her at home, before you practically fled the building, heading for your car. She didnât couldnât imagine what was wrong, never expecting her daughters to have done what they did. Eli didnât even think of them being a possible reason as to why you were upset. Mapi pulled her aside, though, before she could go after you, an infuriated look on her face.Â
âDo you know what your daughters have done?â She asked quietly.Â
Eli frowned. âNo. What have they done?âÂ
Mapi shook her head. âThey both bailed on tonight over text to pequeĂąa. They are in some stupid fight that theyâve put her in the middle of, and they didnât want to see each other, so they didnât come.âÂ
Suddenly, Eli was quite furious at her eldest daughters. There would be hell to pay, sheâd make sure of it. How could they be so selfish, and ruin your night like this? Youâd been almost beside yourself for weeks about this night, and she knew the people you wanted to impress most were your sisters. And they hadnât come. Before she yelled at them, though, she needed to go home to you, because she was very sure that you werenât okay. Your odd behavior made sense, now, and Eliâs heart ached at the thought of you driving all by yourself while you were so upset.Â
âI will deal with them.â Eli said quietly. âThank you for telling me, MarĂa, and for coming. It meant a lot to her.âÂ
Mapi smiled sympathetically. âOf course. Let me know if you need help kicking some Putellas ass.âÂ
Eli chuckled. âI will.âÂ
She set off to her car after that, ignoring Alexiaâs numerous phone calls. Likely, Olga had arrived home and laid into her for not coming, and Alexia was looking to be let off the hook from her Mami that she hadnât messed up that badly. Eli wouldnât be doing that.Â
-------
You didnât make it far into the house. In your new dress, one that was reminiscent of the dress Alexia had worn to win her first balon dâor, youâd collapsed onto the couch, harsh sobs ripping their way out of your chest. You cried until your makeup ran and your chest hurt. Until your Mami arrived home, rushing through the door, her heart breaking when she saw the state you were in. Eli was by your side instantly, pulling you into her arms. It was rare that a hug from your mother didnât make you feel better, but this was the case today. You werenât really sure that anything would help, but you still buried yourself into your Mamiâs arms, wishing more than anything that she could fix this for you.Â
âThey didnât come, Mami,â you sobbed.Â
âI know, mija, I am so sorry.âÂ
âAm I not more important than their stupid fight?â You asked, looking up at your mother with a devastated expression on your face. âI was so excited for them to see, I just wanted them to be proud of me.âÂ
Eli felt anger fill her at a level sheâd never quite felt before. âI am proud of you, cariĂąo, so proud of you. Itâs all going to be okay, I promise. Everything is going to be fine.â She soothed, running her hand through your hair, shushing you softly. Her fury would have to wait, until you stopped crying. Eli would always put you first when you needed it, even if your sisters didnât.Â
-------
It was late by the time youâd stopped crying and headed up to bed. With a soft goodnight to your Mami, youâd slumped upstairs, barely changing into your pajamas before you collapsed into your bed, absolutely exhausted. Being disappointed was tiring, apparently. And you were more disappointed than youâd ever been in your life.Â
Downstairs, Eli waited until she heard your door shut before she pulled her phone out, returning one of the 15 missed calls from her eldest daughter. Alexia picked up quickly, her voice dripping with guilt.
âMami, I-â
âNo. Do not try to explain yourself. You and Alba have done a terrible thing, Alexia. I am not sure how you will make it up to your sister, but you will. You will figure out how to fix it, you will apologize, you will mean it.âÂ
âSĂ, Mami.â Alexia said, her voice small like when she used to get scolded for kicking the football in the house or holding the tv remote high out of her sistersâ reach.Â
âI am so disappointed, Alexia. In you and Alba both.â
âI know, Mami.â Alexia replied, blinking hard to fight off her tears. âIâll fix it, Al and I will fix it.âÂ
âYou will. Goodnight, Alexia. I love you.â Eli was furious, but sheâd always say it, always make sure her daughters knew how loved they were.Â
âI love you too Mami,â the blonde choked out, feeling worse about this than sheâd ever felt about anything in her entire life.Â
Eli called Alba next, who was significantly more clueless about the situation. Neither had known the other wasnât going, but it was beyond your mother how either of her daughters could have underestimated how important to you this night was. Alba was in tears, like Alexia, by the end of the call, also promising her mother sheâd fix it.Â
Eli knew the level of guilt Alexia and Alba must have been feeling at the moment, considering how protective they were of you. They never wanted you to be hurt, but you were. And they were the reason why. As she checked on you, ensuring you were asleep, she knew that her older daughters would go to the ends of the earth to make this up to you.Â
--------
Alba was sitting on her couch, willing herself to be the bigger person and pick up the phone to call Alexia, when she heard a knock at the door. The brunette knew who was there before she pulled it open, not flinching when her older sister was standing on her front porch.Â
Alexia had a drink carrier in one hand, and two bags in the other, giving Alba an unreadable look. âCan I come in?âÂ
Alba nodded, stepping aside to let her sister in. The blonde headed for the living room, setting the coffees down, and grabbing hers out of the holder. Alba grabbed the other, noting that it was her favorite coffee, and her favorite breakfast pastry, from her favorite bakery. A bakery Alexia didnât particularly like, but had clearly stopped at just for Alba.Â
It was a peace offering. One that Alba took, grabbing the coffee and the pastry, sitting on the couch next to her sister in a much less tense silence. They made up in the way only sisterâs could, with no words necessary for either of them to know that the other was sorry for what had been said.Â
âWe fucked up.â Alexia said after a minute, glancing at her sister.Â
âWe really did.â Alba replied.Â
âWe have to fix it.â Alexia declared.Â
âWe really do.â Alba agreed.Â
âAre you going to keep agreeing with me, or are you going to come up with a solution here?âÂ
âAs the one who started the fight that led to us letting our sister down, I think it should be you who solves the problem, Alexia.â Alba retorted, a smirk on her face.Â
Her sister shook her head, shoving the brunetteâs shoulder lightly. âYou are supposed to be the smart one, hermana. Get thinking.âÂ
âNew car?âÂ
âNew house?â
âCan we buy her a country?â
They broke into laughter, the tension completely gone from the room, before they really got brainstorming. They were a good team when they werenât fighting, and it wasnât long before theyâd come up with something that they hoped would make up for their horrible behavior.Â
-------
The minute you saw Alexiaâs car pull into the driveway from your spot on the couch, you were standing up, prepared to flee the room. Youâd known this would happen at some point today, but you werenât ready to see them. You felt so humiliated and so neglected, you were sure that seeing them would have you in tears, and you didnât really want to show that emotion in front of them. Not now, not when they were the reason you were so upset.Â
You knew how important family was to your mother, though, and you knew that if she told you to stay and talk to them, you would. Looking at her cautiously, you took in the wary expression on her face.Â
âDo you want to hear them out, mija?â Eli asked gently.Â
âNo. I donât want to see them right now. Please donât make me.â You begged.Â
âI wonât make you do anything. Go upstairs, Iâll tell you when theyâre gone.â Eli sighed, and with her permission, you practically sprinted up the stairs to your room, closing and locking the door behind you.Â
Your older sisters walked through the doors to the house like they were afraid of what awaited them inside, and it seems that they should have been. Eli stood from her chair, walking over to them, looking unimpressed at the large present in Alexiaâs hands.Â
âHola Mami,â Alba greeted softly. They both wanted to make this up to you, of course, but they also hated when their mother was mad at them.Â
âI do not think that buying her a present is going to fix this.â Eli said pointedly. Alexia and Alba exchanged nervous glances, relaxing slightly when Eli allowed them further into the house. âWhat is it?âÂ
âItâs the new camera. The brand new canon model that she wanted, with all the extra lenses and storage and stuff.â Alexia said, feeling less and less confident about how she and Alba had chosen to go about this.Â
âAnd you think that is enough?â Eli asked bluntly.Â
âItâs a start.â Alba said, a bit defensively. âWe know we messed up, Mami, and we missed the opening night but we can go see it today. Are you not being a little dramatic about this?âÂ
Alexia shot her younger sister a look, knowing exactly how hurt you were, because Olga had returned home from the gallery and told her.Â
âYou did not see her last night. When she realized you werenât coming? She completely shut down. She talked to everyone she needed to, but I did not see her smile the rest of the night. She rushed out of the building just as the evening ended, and by the time I got home, she was sitting on the couch, sobbing. It was supposed to be her night, and you ruined it.â Eli snapped.Â
Alexia and Alba both looked appropriately ashamed, their heads dropping, gazes pointed at the floor in an almost identical fashion. They felt guilty, obviously, but Eli wasnât quite sure they understood that it wasnât just about them missing your event. It was so much more than that.Â
âShe asked me why she is not more important to both of you than an argument. I do not want to spoil the gallery, but I do not think you understand how embarrassing it was for her to have countless photos of you two up on the wall, when you did not even come.âÂ
Both her daughtersâ heads snapped up at this. âOf us?â Alba asked. âThe project was of us?âÂ
âIt was about her loved ones. You two were featured more than anyone else. She was so excited to see your reactions to the photos.â Eli continued, only making them feel worse.Â
âPlease, Mami, I cannot hear anymore.â Alexia said softly, her heart aching at the thought of how upset you must be at the moment. Every detail that her mother added made it worse. She wasnât sure sheâd ever done anything like this to you before, and the thought that you might not forgive her was filling her with anxiety.Â
âNo, you will hear all of it.â Eli said, shaking her head. âShe said to me, âI was so excited for them to see, I just wanted them to be proud of me.ââÂ
âWe are proud of her, she has to know that.â Alba cut in desperately. Her mother just shook her head.Â
âShe does not. Nothing she ever does feels very important to either of you, because it is always something you have done before. This was something that was her own, and she just wanted to share it with you. Everything your sister does is so that you two will be proud of her, and pay attention to her.âÂ
At this, Alexia stood up from the couch, walking over to the window and putting her face in her hands. Her shoulders shook with silent cries, and neither her mother or her sister were very surprised at the emotional outburst. Alexia was always emotional when it came to you; she remembered the day youâd been born, every milestone in your life. You were your very tough sisterâs soft spot.Â
âDo you think we can fix it?â Alba asked quietly, terrified of her motherâs answer.Â
With a deep sigh, Eli nodded her head. Alexia turned around hopefully, hanging on to Eliâs every word. âYour baby sister has always been more forgiving than both of you. She is hurt, but she will forgive you. She loves you both too much not to.âÂ
Every word Eli said felt like a bullet to the chest to both of your sisters, something your mother was well aware of. She wasnât going to sugar coat this. It was silent in the room for several minutes, every member of the family lost in thought. Alexia looked furious with herself, Alba looked like she was close to tears, and Eli just looked disappointed. Sheâd always trusted your sisters to take care of you when she couldnât, but she wasnât so sure she had that confidence in them anymore.Â
âI have an idea.â Alexia said finally, looking between her mother and her sister hesitantly. They both agreed to what she proposed, though, and it wasnât long before Eli had pulled out some paper and pens for her daughters. They both sat on the floor around the coffee table and got writing. It was reminiscent of when theyâd do their homework in the same spot years ago, sitting on the floor so they could play with you while they finished their assignments.Â
Now, though, you were painfully absent from the scene in front of your mother, and Eli could only hope that this would work.Â
-------
Alexia and Alba agreed that only one of them would go upstairs, give you the two pieces of paper, and let you be for the evening. Alexia was desperate to see you, while Alba wasnât sure she could do so without crying, and she didnât particularly want to put that on you at the moment. You hated seeing your sisters upset, and she didnât want to inadvertently guilt you into forgiving her before you were ready. So, Alexia made her way upstairs, agreeing to Eliâs warnings to leave you alone if you wouldnât let her in.Â
Her knock on your door was uncharacteristically gentle, and her voice was almost shaky as she announced herself.Â
âNena? Can I come in for a minute?âÂ
Taking a deep breath, you opened the door, feeling rather satisfied to see the guilt all over her face.Â
Alexia stepped into the room, looking so nervous and so unlike herself. She was fidgeting with two pieces of paper in her hands, barely able to bring herself to look you in the eye. âI am so sorry, hermanita. More sorry than I can put into words.â She didn't seem to know what else to say, and you rolled your eyes.Â
âDo you think that is enough?â You asked.Â
Alexia shook her head rapidly. âNo, I know it isnât. Alba and I are going to fix this, nena, I promise. Whatever we have to do, whatever it takes. We will make this up to you. There is nothing more important to us than you.âÂ
Your eldest sister could tell you didnât believe her, the way you looked away from her was a dead giveaway.Â
âI know you are upset, and that is okay. I just⌠can I give you a hug, nena? You can still be mad at me and everything. Iâd just really like an hermanita hug.â Alexia said vulnerably, tears clouding her vision. She had underestimated how painful it would be to see you so upset with her, but her chest truly ached as she took in the betrayal and disappointment on your face. A few tears fell from her eyes, and it was this bit of emotion that had you nodding your head, stepping forward as Alexia wrapped her arms around you almost painfully tight.Â
It made you feel better, even though it probably shouldnât have. Your sisterâs hugs always felt warm and safe, and today was no exception. Even though sheâd hurt you. It was still Alexia, and she was a hard person to stay mad at. Still, you pulled away before you wanted to, and the blonde cleared her throat, holding out the pieces of paper for you.Â
âFrom me and Alba. We will be downstairs, if you want to talk.â Your sister opened and closed her mouth a few times, before shaking her head, mustering a weak smile, and leaving the room. She shut the door behind her, something she never did, always insisting on leaving it open just to bother you.Â
You opened your sistersâ letters, not quite sure what you would be reading. You werenât quite angry anymore, just sad. You were never one to hold a grudge, but you werenât sure how they were going to be able to make this stop hurting.Â
You underestimate, however, how well your sisters knew you, and combined with the information they had from Eli, they knew just what to say. You read both the letters a few times, tears streaming down your face for what felt like the 12th time that day. This time, though, they were good tears.Â
Both letters were similar, but very⌠specific to each of your sisters.Â
Alexiaâs was practically a bullet pointed list, in her messy, big handwriting. There was a mark on the page that looked suspiciously like a teardrop, and Alexia talked about her emotions in the letter the way she always did in real life; saying as little as possible, while still somehow saying a whole lot.Â
Albaâs was a real letter, paragraph after paragraph of neat writing, beautifully articulating what she wanted to say to you. It was always a bit surprising to remember how perceptive Alba was. She was a forgetful person, but not when it came to the things that mattered. This was clear in the letter, as she listed small details out that you hadnât thought sheâd noticed.Â
Both of the letters were an apology. An apology, and a deep dive into how proud of you Alexia and Alba were. They apologized for not making it clear, before going back to when you were a baby, and they watched you walk for the first time. Through the years, they had overlapping and different memories of things youâd done that made them swell with pride. There were things you remembered, and things you didnât, but they made you feel special all the same. Alexia and Alba did pay attention, that much was clear. Even if they werenât always the best at showing it, they paid attention to you.Â
It did more than a verbal apology could have ever done. It was something tangible, kind, warm and loving. It made you feel loved, and seen. It made you feel like you mattered. You werenât Alexia, and you werenât Alba, but you were you, and they felt that to be something much more special.Â
You tried to hold out a bit longer, you really did, but you were putting the letters down and rushing downstairs before you could really stop yourself.Â
You passed the kitchen on the way to the living room, where your Mami was preparing dinner, a small, relieved smile on her face. Wishing you had something funny and unbothered to say, you walked into the room, seeing your sisters sitting on the couch, looking pathetically distraught.Â
âHola.â You said softly, feeling indescribably happy when both of their faces lit up at the sight of you, and you quickly crossed the room, wedging yourself in between them. They made room for you, as they always did, allowing you to fit easily into your spot squished with Alexia on one side, and Alba on the other.Â
They each wrapped an arm around you, and both tried to pull you in opposite directions. It was ironic, the way they used you to play a silly game of tug of war. This time, however, they stopped pulling when they realized neither of them would win. Instead, they both wrapped you into a very awkward and suffocating hug, arms wrapped around you from seemingly every direction.Â
âI love you, nena.â Alexia whispered, pressing a kiss to the side of your head.Â
Alba did the same to your cheek. âI am so sorry, hermanita, and I love you so much,â she whispered.Â
âI know.â You said softly. âI forgive you.â Â
And if it had been either of them in your position, it would have taken a lot more. You were the forgiving sister, though, and youâd really just needed proof that your sisters thought that you were as important as you felt them to be.Â
When Eli came in the room a few minutes later, it was to see the three of you in a rather familiar position; you in the middle, each of your sisters holding on to as much of you as they could, completely content. Theyâd always like to hold you like that, starting when you were a baby. Alexia would carefully put you on the couch in between them, and put a movie on. They would take turns telling you all the important details your brain was far too small to comprehend, but you didnât squirm, and you didnât fuss. You would stay plopped right in between them, one of each of their fingers gripped tight in your hands.Â
It was a lot different now, because you were all bigger. It looked like an uncomfortable pile of limbs on the couch, but Eli knew you were all as comfortable as youâd ever get.Â
-------
Neither of your sisters seemed very willing to let you out of their sight anytime soon, which you were sure would grow annoying very fast. For now, though, you enjoyed the attention, especially when Alexia pushed the wrapped box that had been sitting on the table into your hands.Â
And, youâd already forgiven them before youâd seen the camera theyâd bought you, one that youâd been desperately wanting for a while. If you hadnât forgiven them, though, you would have now. You could be bought, and your sisters were well aware of it. As was your Mami. She rolled her eyes as you stared in awe at the camera, as Alexia and Alba looked on proudly, sharing a discreet fist bump. Personally, Eli thought youâd let them off kind of easy, but she shouldnât have underestimated you. You were a youngest child, and you knew how to get what you wanted.Â
âCan we go see your photos after dinner?â Alba asked, not even getting a glance from you, your attention completely zeroed in on the camera in your hands.Â
âNope.â You replied. Alexia and Alba looked uneasily at each other, and then at their Mami for guidance, before you spoke again. âAlexia, you are going to clean my room. And Alba, you are going to make me those cookies I like. We can go see the gallery tomorrow.âÂ
Your face was smug, and your mother stifled a laugh as your sisters looked disgruntled at each other. Begrudgingly, though, they both nodded.Â
âAnything for the princess.â Alexia mumbled, and Alba snickered quietly.Â
âWhat was that?â You asked, turning your attention to your sisters. They looked at you in defiance, smirks on both of their faces, not willing to let you completely walk all over them, even if they deserved it.Â
âYou heard me.â Alexia teased. âThe baby princess always gets her way.âÂ
âReally, Ale?â You asked calmly, before turning to Eli, your new camera briefly forgotten on the table in front of you. âMami, do you have any plans in two weekends? I was thinking we could take a trip just the two of-âÂ
Alexia cut you off by rather aggressively throwing herself at you, covering your mouth with her hand. âNO HERMANITA!â The blonde shouted. âOh, gross, nena, really?â She groaned, pulling her hand away when you licked it. You smiled triumphantly, managing to push away from her a bit.Â
âYou are not a princess, nena. Just a little baby.â Alba chimed in, reaching over from her chair to pinch your cheek in one hand. âNow keep quiet before you ruin the surprise and give Ale a stroke.âÂ
Your mother shook her head, taking pity on her eldest daughter, who looked prepared to explode at the thought of the surprise being ruined. âDo you think I do not know you were planning a trip for the four of us, Alexia? Honey, you asked me several times if I was free that weekend, and reminded me not to make any plans then either. You also asked me for hotel recommendations, and pretended it was for you and Olga. You are a bad liar, mija. I have known for weeks.â Eli laughed.Â
Alexia frowned, shoving you and Alba both away from her as you both collapsed into giggles, despite the fact that this was entirely her fault, and you and Alba were blameless. She knew there was teasing coming her way, but the smile on your face was well worth it. Order had been restored, and both of your sisters had made promises to themselves, and to each other, to not let their arguments hurt you anymore. You were just happy to have them both there, at home. All four of you together, how it was supposed to be.Â
-------
it will really always be funny to me that my sister and i do not say the words "i'm sorry" to each other. like we'd both rather die than apologize. she could hit me with her car and i wouldn't want her to apologize because... ew. anyway sometimes having a sister is cool and sometimes its not but i love mine.
everyone applaud me for not splitting this into two parts. seriously i am astounded at myself right now.
hope you all like it :) give me all your thoughts.

Everything To Me | S.R.
summary: Spencer is in love with his coworker and best friend and goes all out to celebrate her birthday on the day after when she catches her boyfriend in bed with another woman when they arrive home from a case.
this is 100% season 1 spencer
warning: cheating, making out, angst/comfort
â(Y/N)! Wait up!â Spencer stumbled, tripping over his feet as he hurried to catch the elevator with his friend. He covered the distance from his desk to the elevator doors in record time as (Y/N) hit the button to presumably hold open the doors for him. He slid in and stood next to her while panting lightly. He really needed to do some cardio, he noted to himself.
âWow, with speed like that I should start calling you Barry Allen,â she giggled, making Spencer's heart flutter in the best and most terrifying way and drawing a laugh out of his throat (even though he didnât really get the reference). He couldn't help it when all he could think about was how much he wanted to hear that laugh every day for the rest of his life.
âSorry,â he flashed a sheepish smile at her and ducked his head a little bit as he felt his cheeks heat up slightly.
âHey, uh, I was wondering if you had any, uh, any plans for the evening? Thereâs a Star Trek: The Next Generation marathon and I know thatâs your favorite Star Trek series so I was thinking maybe we could hang out and maybe get some takeout?"
"That sounds like it would be a hell of a time," she began. Spencer could already feel the incoming, "but I promised Warren I'd spend the evening with him since it's my birthday and all." Spencer had to keep himself from making a face at the mention of her asshole of a boyfriend, not wanting to upset her, and so instead he opted to skip over that and react to the next part of her statement.
"Wait it's your birthday? Why didn't you say anything? We all would have done something to celebrate before going home today," Spencer started kicking himself internally. How could he not have known today was her birthday? The two of them had become attached at the hip pretty much since she started at the BAU 4 months ago. She had even celebrated his own birthday with him and the rest of the team.
âHey, itâs okay! You donât need to feel bad or anything, I tend to just treat my birthday like itâs any other day so I often just don't even tell anyone when it is,â she shot him a sweet smile in an attempt to assure him that it was okay but it didn't make him feel any less guilty.
Spencer's heart sank a bit at the thought of not being able to celebrate (Y/N)'s birthday with her, but he knew Warren was important to her regardless of how much Spencer and the team disliked him. He mustered a smile and nodded, "No worries, spending time with Warren sounds great. Happy birthday, (Y/N). I hope your day is as wonderful as you are."
(Y/N) blushed at the compliment, waving it off modestly. The elevator dinged softly, indicating they had reached the ground floor. As the doors slid open, they stepped out into the bustling lobby of the FBI building. Spencer glanced at his watch and realized it was already late in the evening.
"Well, I should let you get going. Have a fantastic birthday night with Warren," Spencer said, trying to hide his disappointment behind a cheerful facade.
"Thank you, Spencer. I really appreciate it. We should definitely catch that Star Trek marathon another time," she replied with a warm smile before turning to head towards the exit.
Later in the evening, Spencer found himself sitting on his worn-out couch, a container of lukewarm Chinese takeout resting in his lap as he absentmindedly watched reruns of Star Trek. His mind kept wandering back to the encounter in the elevator with (Y/N) earlier that day. The missed opportunity to spend her birthday with her weighed heavily on his heart.
Just as Captain Picard was about to make a diplomatic decision that could change the course of an entire star system, Spencer's phone rang, jolting him out of his thoughts. He glanced at the screen to see (Y/N)'s name flashing brightly.
With a mixture of confusion and worry, he answered the call. "Hey, (Y/N), is everything okay?" His heart clenched at the sound of her quiet sobs on the other end of the line.
"Spencer," her voice cracked, "can you... can you come pick me up?"
Without another word, Spencer sprang into action. "Of course, (Y/N). I'll be right there. Where are you?" Spencer's voice was filled with concern as he quickly grabbed his keys and rushed out the door, leaving behind the half-eaten container of Chinese takeout and the flickering TV screen showing Star Trek.
As he drove through the quiet streets towards (Y/N)'s location, thoughts raced through Spencer's mind. Why was she crying? What had happened? He couldn't bear the thought of her in distress, especially on her birthday.
Finally reaching the spot where she said she would be, Spencer spotted (Y/N) sitting on a bench outside of a sketchy looking apartment complex, her head buried in her hands. He parked the car and hurried over to her, his heart breaking at the sight of her tear-streaked face.
"(Y/N), what's wrong?" Spencer knelt down beside her, gently placing a hand on her back. She looked up at him with red, puffy eyes, and he felt a crack in his chest
as her trembling voice filled the cool night air.
"I... I waited for Warren at my apartment, but he never showed up or called. I got worried and went to his place," she paused, taking a shuddering breath before continuing, "I let myself in with my key, and... and I found him in bed with another woman."
Shock rippled through Spencer as he struggled to process her words. The image of (Y/N) standing in the doorway of Warren's apartment, witnessing such a betrayal, tore at his heart. Anger flared within him, directed not only at Warren but at the unfairness of it all. How could someone as kind and genuine as (Y/N) be treated so callously?
Without hesitation, Spencer pulled (Y/N) into a tight embrace, offering her solace in the warmth of his arms. He felt her tears soak into his shirt as she clung to him, seeking comfort amidst the storm of emotions raging within her.
As she sobbed into his chest he felt tears pricking his own eyes. He gently cupped her head and started stroking her hair in an attempt to soothe her before saying, âletâs get you into the car, okay?â
As Spencer led (Y/N) to his car, he couldn't shake the image of her devastated face from his mind. The weight of her heartbreak hung heavy in the air, suffocating him with a sense of helplessness. He opened the car door for her, watching as she settled into the passenger seat with a heavy sigh.
"I'm so sorry, (Y/N)," Spencer murmured softly as he started the engine, casting a sympathetic glance her way. "You deserve so much better than this."
(Y/N) let out a bitter laugh, devoid of any humor. "I should have known better than to get my hopes up. This is why I never celebrate my birthday. Itâs more trouble than itâs worth," she confessed, her voice laced with resignation and nothing more than a whisper by the very end. Spencer's heart clenched at her words. He wanted nothing more than to ease her pain, to show her that she deserved all the love and happiness in the world.
"You deserve to be celebrated, (Y/N)," Spencer said with conviction, his eyes meeting hers in the dim light of the car. "No one has the right to make you feel otherwise. You are kind, beautiful, and deserving of all the love and joy that life has to offer."
Spencer's words echoed in (Y/N)'s mind as they drove through the quiet streets of the city, the soft glow of streetlights casting a serene ambiance over the car. The heaviness of her heart began to lift ever so slightly, buoyed by the sincerity in Spencer's eyes and the comfort of his presence beside her.
As they reached a stoplight, Spencer turned to (Y/N) with a tentative smile. "How about we make a detour?" he suggested gently. "There's this little ice cream shop a few blocks away. Maybe some ice cream might help lift your spirits."
(Y/N) managed a small smile in return, touched by Spencer's thoughtfulness. The simple gesture felt like a ray of sunshine breaking through the storm clouds that had gathered around her heart. "That sounds nice," she replied softly, her voice still tinged with sadness but with a glimmer of gratitude shining through.
They parked near the ice cream shop, its cheerful neon sign beckoning them inside. The bell above the door jingled as they stepped in, greeted by the sweet scent of freshly made waffle cones and a colorful display of ice cream flavors. Spencer guided (Y/N) to a cozy booth by the window, where they could watch the world pass by as they indulged in their frozen treats.
As they savored their ice cream, the heaviness in (Y/N)'s heart began to thaw, melting away with each spoonful of creamy sweetness. Spencer listened attentively as she shared snippets of her favorite childhood memories, her voice soft and wistful against the backdrop of cheerful chatter from other customers.
Once they had finished their ice cream, Spencer suggested another detour. "There's this little vintage store down the street that always has some classic movies on sale. How about we pick up one of your favorites and head back to my place to watch it?â
(Y/N) hesitated before saying, âI donât know about picking up anything from a store but is that Star Trek marathon still on?â The slight amount of hope in her voice made Spencerâs heart flutter with a mix of relief and warmth. He had been longing for a chance to make her smile, to see a glimmer of happiness light up her eyes once more.
Nodding enthusiastically, he replied, "Absolutely! We can swing by the store another time. For now, let's head straight to my place for that Star Trek marathon." The anticipation in (Y/N)'s eyes was palpable as they made their way to Spencer's cozy apartment. The familiar scent of old books and fresh laundry greeted them as they stepped inside, the soft glow of string lights casting a warm ambiance over the living room.
Spencer turned the TV back on, dimming the lights to create a cozy home-theater atmosphere. They settled on the couch, surrounded by plush pillows and soft blankets, basking in the nostalgic thrill of the sci-fi classic unfolding on the screen.
As the episode played on, Spencer got up and reheated the Chinese food from earlier and putting it on plates for each of them. He grabbed himself a fork and got one of the sets of chopsticks from the restaurant for (Y/N). As he made his way back to the living room he saw (Y/N) happily rocking back and forth as she watched Data and Geordi share another one of their intriguing engineering discussions. Spencer couldn't help but smile at the sight, a flicker of contentment lighting up his own heart as he handed (Y/N) the plate with her food and settled back onto the couch beside her.
Between bites of General Tso's chicken and sips of hot tea, Spencer couldn't help but feel a sense of peace settle over him. The soft glow of the TV cast shadows across the room, creating a cocoon of warmth and familiarity around them. The gentle hum of the spaceship's engines on screen seemed to lull them both into a comfortable silence, broken only by the occasional chuckle or comment about the characters.
After a few episodes, Spencer found himself stealing glances at (Y/N) out of the corner of his eye, admiring the soft curve of her profile as she watched intently. He could see a spark of joy in her eyes, a fleeting moment of escape from the weight of unspoken emotions that lingered between them. Sensing a rare moment of vulnerability, Spencer cleared his throat softly before turning to (Y/N) with a gentle smile.
"Hey, (Y/N)," he began, his voice soft and tentative. "I was wondering... If you could have done anything for your birthday today, what would it have been?"
(Y/N) paused, her gaze shifting from the screen to Spencer. Her expression softened as she considered the question, a faint blush dusting her cheeks. "You know, I've always wanted to visit the Smithsonian," she murmured, her eyes distant with longing. "And maybe the Botanic Gardens too... It's on my list of things to do someday."
Spencer nodded, committing her words to memory as he filed away the simple desires she shared. He made a mental note to himself, silently vowing to make those dreams a reality for her someday.
As they finished the last episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Spencer noticed the clock on the wall ticking closer to midnight. With a sense of reluctance, he turned to (Y/N) and said, "I hate to cut this short, but it's getting late. I should call a cab for you."
(Y/N) looked up at him, a mixture of disappointment and understanding in her eyes. She nodded quietly, gathering her things and slipping on her coat. As Spencer dialed for a cab, he couldn't shake off the feeling of missed opportunities hanging heavy in the air.
The subdued sound of the approaching cab echoed through the quiet street outside. Spencer opened the door for (Y/N), his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer than necessary. "I'll be picking you up at 11 am tomorrow so be dressed and ready," he said, surprising both himself and (Y/N) with his sudden declaration.
Confusion flashed across her face as she stammered, "But... why? Where are we going?"
"Just make sure youâre ready,â he smiled, ideas blossoming in his mind as he decided he was going to show her what her birthday meant to him. He closed the cab door behind her and waved as the car drove off before turning on his heel and heading back inside, preparing to show his best friend the time of her life tomorrow.
Spencer woke up at 8 am the next morning to the soft rays of sunlight filtering through the curtains, illuminating his room in a golden hue. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he stretched his arms above his head and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. Today was going to be special; he was determined to make it a day that (Y/N) would never forget.
Remembering her mention once that morning glories were her favorite flower, Spencer decided to start by weaving a delicate flower crown out of the vibrant blooms he had picked from his backyard garden. As he carefully intertwined the petals and vines into a crown fit for a queen, he couldn't help but smile at the thought of seeing (Y/N) wear it.
After finishing the flower crown, Spencer's thoughts drifted to a memory she had shared with him long ago. Before her parents had passed away, they used to build her a pillow fort and hang fairy lights in it on special occasions. Determined to recreate that sense of childhood magic for her, Spencer set about constructing a fort in his living room. He gathered every pillow and blanket he could find, stacking them strategically to form the walls of the fort. With a bit of effort and creativity, he managed to fashion an elaborate yet cozy hideaway filled with soft cushions and twinkling fairy lights. His PhD in Engineering was finally seeing some use.
As he stepped back to admire his handiwork, Spencer's heart swelled with a mix of emotions. The soft glow of the lights cast a warm, inviting aura over the fort, creating an atmosphere of whimsy and nostalgia. He could almost picture the look of wonder on (Y/N)'s face when she saw it, and the thought filled him with a sense of anticipation.
With the fort completed, Spencer glanced at the clock and realized it was almost time to pick up (Y/N). Quickly changing into a clean shirt and vest and grabbing the flower crown he had made earlier, he made his way out the door, excitement bubbling in his chest.
As he drove to (Y/N)'s apartment, Spencer's mind was a whirlwind of nerves and anticipation. He parked the car a few blocks away, wanting to give himself a moment to compose himself before their day together began. Taking a deep breath, he stepped out onto the sidewalk and started the short walk to her building.
The street was alive with the sounds of the city waking up - the distant hum of traffic, the chatter of early risers going about their day. But in Spencer's mind, all he could focus on was the image of (Y/N) in his mind, wearing the flower crown he had made for her.
Finally reaching her apartment building, he climbed the steps to her floor, his heart pounding in his chest. Standing in front of her door, he took one last deep breath before lifting his hand to knock.
The sound echoed through the hallway, reverberating in Spencer's ears as he waited with bated breath. After what felt like an eternity, he heard footsteps approaching from inside the apartment. The soft shuffling of footsteps grew louder, and Spencer's pulse quickened in anticipation. Suddenly, the gentle click of the door being unlocked filled the air, and it slowly swung open to reveal (Y/N) standing before him.
She looked breathtaking. (Y/N) was wearing a simple yet elegant dress with cute buttons lining the front and a delicate peter pan collar. Her chin length bob was slightly curved under her chin and her bangs fell across her forehead in such a perfect way and Spencer looked away quickly, his cheeks burning when he realized he was staring. For a moment, they stood there in silence, the air thick with unspoken words and emotions.
Then, Spencer slowly brought forward the flower crown he had hidden behind his back, holding it out towards (Y/N) with a shaky hand. âHappy birthday," he finally whispered, his voice barely above a breath as he nervously offered her the crown. The soft petals of the flowers brushed against her fingertips, and (Y/N)'s eyes widened in surprise and delight as she took the flower crown from Spencer's hand. A small gasp escaped her lips as she held the delicate creation, a mix of awe and gratitude shining in her eyes as she looked up at him.
"Spencer, it's beautiful," she murmured as she gently placed it atop her head, her voice soft with emotion. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a golden glow that illuminated her features, making her look even more ethereal. In that moment, caught in the gentle morning light, Spencer felt a swell of affection for her that threatened to overwhelm him.
After a beat of silence filled with unspoken words hanging in the air between them, Spencer cleared his throat and offered a hesitant smile. "Are you ready to go?" he asked, his heart beating a little faster at the prospect of spending the day with her.
(Y/N) returned his smile with a nod, her eyes sparkling with anticipation as she looped her arm through his, the flower crown perched delicately on her head. They strolled down the bustling street, the city waking up around them with a cacophony of sounds and scents. Spencer couldn't help but steal glances at (Y/N), her presence beside him filling him with a warmth he hadn't felt before.
Their first stop was a cozy bookshop just across the street from her apartment building. The bell above the door chimed softly as they entered, and the scent of aged paper and ink enveloped them in a comforting embrace. Rows upon rows of books lined the shelves, each one whispering promises of new worlds and adventures.
"Pick out as many as you'd like," Spencer said, gesturing to the endless array of titles surrounding them. (Y/N)'s eyes widened in delight, a soft gasp escaping her lips as she wandered through the aisles, her fingers trailing over spines in search of stories. He watched as she made her way through the shelves until she reached the SciFi/Fantasy and Horror section and begin removing books from the shelves, reading the backs and either adding them to the stack in her arms or placing them back on the shelves.
Spencer couldn't help but admire the way (Y/N) immersed herself in the world of books, her eyes alight with a passion that made her even more enchanting. She moved with purpose, carefully selecting each book as if it held a piece of her soul within its pages. His heart swelled with fondness for her, her love for literature reflecting a depth to her character that he found endlessly captivating.
As (Y/N) returned back to him, her arms filled with a stack of books that seemed to reach towards the sky, she gave him a sheepish smile. "I might have gotten a bit carried away," she admitted, a hint of embarrassment coloring her cheeks. âCould you help me narrow things down a little bit?â
Spencer chuckled softly, his eyes crinkling at the corners in amusement. "No need to apologize. Let's see what treasures you've found," he said, reaching out to take a few books from her arms. Together, they perused the titles she had chosen, discussing the plots and themes. After they had no luck in narrowing down the pile, Spencer scooped them all up into his arms in a stack and began making his way to the checkout stand.
"Why bother narrowing it down?" Spencer's voice was filled with a playful lilt as he carried the stack of books towards the checkout counter, (Y/N) trailing behind him with a smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
"Impressive selection," the bookstore clerk commented as he rung up the stack of books, each title a window into (Y/N)'s interests and desires. (Y/N) beamed at the compliment, her eyes shining with confusion and gratitude as Spencer pulled out his wallet and paid before she could even reach for her own from her bag.
As they left the bookshop, the sun had climbed higher in the sky, casting a warm glow over the crowded streets. The sounds of the city swirled around themâhonking cars, lively chatter, and the distant rumble of a passing train. Spencer glanced over at (Y/N) walking beside him, her face illuminated by a soft radiance.
(Y/N) quickly unlocked the door and placed the bags of books onto her dining room table before they walked back outside. Spencer patiently waited as she locked her door before holding his arm out again for her to grab on to as he lead her to his car.
As they arrived at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Spencer's steps were light with anticipation. The air was alive with the promise of discovery, and he couldn't wait to share this world of wonders with (Y/N). The museum loomed before them like a giant treasure trove, its grand architecture a testament to human ingenuity and ambition.
Stepping inside, they were greeted by a vast hall filled with aircraft suspended from the ceiling like metallic birds frozen in flight. (Y/N)'s eyes widened in awe, her gaze flitting from one exhibit to another as Spencer led her through the maze of history and innovation.
"This is the Wright Flyer," Spencer said, pointing towards the iconic biplane that started it all. "It's incredible to think that this simple machine paved the way for all modern aviation."
As they moved deeper into the museum, Spencer's voice became a gentle murmur of knowledge and passion. He regaled (Y/N) with stories of astronauts who dared to venture beyond Earth's atmosphere and the technological advancements that made it all possible. (Y/N) listened with rapt attention, her eyes shimmering with wonder and admiration for both the exhibits and the man beside her.
Each artifact held a story, a piece of history waiting to be unraveled. Spencer's explanations brought life to the static displays, turning them into vibrant tales of human courage and scientific progress. He pointed out the intricate details of each spacecraft, each spacesuit, each photograph, as if they were sacred relics in a grand temple of human achievement.
As they entered the lunar module exhibit, (Y/N) gasped in awe at the sight of the actual spacecraft that had touched the surface of the moon as well as a piece of rock from the moon that was free for visitors to touch. She reached out a hand as if to touch it, but stopped herself, as if afraid to disturb the fragile connection between past and present.
Spencer noticed her hesitation and smiled softly. "It's okay, you can touch it," he encouraged. "Feel the history in your fingers."
(Y/N) tentatively reached out and brushed her fingertips against the cool, pitted surface of the moon rock. A jolt of electricity seemed to pass through her as she made contact, connecting her to a distant world that had once seemed so unreachable. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, overwhelmed by the weight of history and the magnitude of human achievement.
Spencer watched her with a mix of admiration and fondness, his heart swelling with a bittersweet ache at the sight of her emotional response. He longed to reach out and comfort her, to share in this moment of vulnerability and connection, but he held back, knowing that some experiences were meant to be felt in solitude.
As they moved on to the space shuttle exhibit, Spencer's voice took on a reverent tone as he explained the intricacies of space travel and the courage of those who dared to venture into the unknown. (Y/N) listened intently, hanging onto his every word as if they were precious treasures. The stories of the astronauts and their daring adventures resonated with her in a way she couldn't quite explain. It was as if each tale of exploration and discovery tugged at something deep within her, awakening a yearning for the stars that had long been dormant.
After exploring the wonders of the cosmos in the Air and Space Museum, Spencer suggested they visit the Museum of Natural History next. (Y/N) eagerly agreed, her curiosity piqued by the promise of delving into the mysteries of the natural world.
The moment they stepped into the museum, a wave of earthy scents enveloped themâthe musty aroma of ancient fossils, the fresh green fragrance of preserved plants, and the tangy scent of minerals. (Y/N) took a deep breath, savoring the rich tapestry of odors that surrounded her as they ventured deeper into the exhibits.
Spencer guided her through halls filled with towering skeletons of dinosaurs, exotic taxidermy specimens, and sparkling gemstones that seemed to whisper tales of ancient worlds and forgotten creatures. His voice, now a gentle hum of fascination, wove intricate stories of the natural wonders before them, each exhibit a chapter in the never-ending book of Earth's history.
With every step, (Y/N) felt herself being transported back in time, her senses overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, and scents of a world long gone yet preserved within the walls of the museum. She marveled at the sheer diversity of life that had once inhabited the planet, from the majestic bones of a towering T-Rex to the delicate wings of a butterfly frozen in time.
As they reached the Butterfly Pavilion, (Y/N)'s eyes lit up with childlike excitement. She walked among the lush greenery, her fingers gently trailing over velvety leaves and vibrant petals as she inspected each plant with keen interest. Spencer watched her with a soft smile, his admiration for her knowledge and passion shining in his eyes.
"Itâs like stepping into a living kaleidoscope," (Y/N) breathed, her voice hushed with wonder. "Each butterfly and moth, every plant here tells a story of adaptation and survival. Look at this one," she gestured to a plump monarch butterfly sipping nectar from a bright orange bloom, "did you know they migrate for thousands of miles to escape the cold?"
Spencer was happy to listen intently to her spout knowledge that he already held, captivated by the gleam in her eyes and the animated gestures that accompanied each explanation. He found himself falling even more deeply under her spell as she shared her wealth of knowledge, her voice growing more animated with each tidbit of information.
As they wandered through the pavilion, (Y/N) pointed out the intricate patterns on the butterflies' wings, explaining their purpose and significance with a mix of scientific precision and unbridled enthusiasm. Spencer couldn't help but be swept up in her passion, feeling a warmth bloom in his chest at the sight of her so fully immersed in her element. Her rarely used PhDs in Botany and Microbiology shone brightly through her words and actions as she explained the importance of every living thing within the enclosure down to the network of fungal mycelium in the dirt, making Spencer see her in a whole new light. The way she spoke about each species of butterfly or moth, each plant or fungus they saw, showcased not only her expertise but also her deep love and respect for the natural world.
Spencer found himself hanging onto her every word, just as she had done with his tales of space exploration earlier. He admired the way her eyes sparkled with excitement, the way her hands gestured animatedly as if conducting a symphony of knowledge and wonder.
As they reached a secluded corner of the pavilion, (Y/N) knelt down beside a cluster of milkweed plants, her voice soft and reverent as she explained their importance to the monarch butterflies. Spencer watched her intently, a sense of peace settling over him as he observed her in her element. He then checked his watch, his eyes widening in realization as he saw the time. They were going to be late for the dinner reservation he had managed to secure at the new Italian restaurant (Y/N) had been longing to try for months. With a gentle touch on her shoulder, Spencer interrupted her explanation about the symbiotic relationship between the milkweed plants and monarch butterflies.
"(Y/N), as much as I hate to interrupt your fascinating lesson, we should start heading out. We have a dinner reservation," Spencer said apologetically, a hint of regret in his tone.
Startled by the mention of dinner, (Y/N) straightened up, her eyes widening in surprise before a sheepish smile crossed her face. "Oh gosh, I completely lost track of time! I'm so sorry, Spencer. Let's go."
They hurried through the Butterfly Pavilion, their steps quickening as they made their way to the exit. Spencer opened the passenger door for her as they approached his car, and they soon found themselves seated inside as Spencer started the engine. The warmth of the setting sun bathed the interior in a golden glow, casting long shadows across (Y/N)'s face as she fastened her seatbelt. She glanced over at Spencer, her eyes shining with a mix of excitement and anticipation for the evening ahead.
The drive to the Italian restaurant was filled with comfortable silence, the only sound the soft hum of the radio playing a mellow jazz tune in the background. Spencer stole glances at (Y/N) from time to time, admiring how the fading light accentuated her features, casting her in a soft, ethereal glow.
Arriving at the restaurant, they were greeted by the tantalizing aroma of garlic and tomato sauce wafting through the air. The cozy ambiance of the place enveloped them as they were led to their table, nestled in a corner with a flickering candle casting dancing shadows on their faces.
As they perused the menu, (Y/N)'s eyes widened in delight as she scanned the offerings, her excitement palpable. Spencer couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm, feeling a warmth in his chest that had nothing to do with the romantic candlelight surrounding them. This moment, this simple act of sharing a meal with her, felt like a glimpse into the life he had always wanted but never dared to reach for.
Their conversation flowed effortlessly, filled with laughter and shared stories. (Y/N)'s eyes sparkled with joy as she recounted a hilarious mishap at work, and Spencer found himself hanging onto her every word once again. It was moments like these that made him forget about his own worries and fears, immersing himself in the present moment.
As the waiter brought out their food, the table was soon filled with plates of steaming pasta and fragrant sauces. The first bite sent a burst of flavors dancing on (Y/N)'s tongue, and she couldn't help but close her eyes in bliss. Spencer watched her savor each mouthful, her expression a symphony of delight and contentment. The flickering candlelight played on her face, accentuating the curve of her smile and the sparkle in her eyes.
Spencer's gaze lingered on her, a sense of longing tugging at his heart. He wanted to freeze this moment in time, to etch it into his memory forever. The warmth of the restaurant, the soft glow of the candle, the sound of (Y/N)'s laughter â all of it wove together into a tapestry of perfect happiness.
But beneath the surface of their shared joy, Spencer felt a pang of bittersweet realization. This was just a moment, a fleeting interlude in their lives. Tomorrow, they would return to their separate paths, their separate dreams.
As (Y/N) reached for her glass of wine, her hand brushed against his, sending a jolt of electricity through him. Their eyes met, and in that brief moment of connection, Spencer felt a surge of courage wash over him. As they finished their meals, the waiter returned to their table with a flourish, presenting a tray of decadent desserts that Spencer had secretly ordered while (Y/N) was in the bathroom. A smile played on his lips as he watched her eyes widen in surprise and delight at the unexpected treat.
"Spencer, you didn't have to do this," she murmured, her voice soft with gratitude.
"It's my pleasure," he replied, his tone gentle yet tinged with a hint of nervousness. "Would you like to enjoy it here or take it to go and eat it while watching something?"
(Y/N) hesitated for a moment, her gaze flickering between the cozy restaurant ambiance and the promise of a quiet moment elsewhere. After a brief pause, she decided, "Let's take it to go."
Spencer nodded in agreement and politely requested the bill. As he settled the payment, a sense of resolve settled in him, guiding his actions as they left the restaurant. The cool night air caressed their skin as they walked towards Spencer's car parked just around the corner. He opened the passenger door for her, a gesture that was both chivalrous and intimate.
As they drove through the city streets, (Y/N) couldn't shake off the feeling of curiosity that gnawed at her mind. Why were they headed to Spencer's apartment instead of hers, as she had anticipated? Her thoughts raced, trying to find an explanation for this unexpected turn of events.
Upon arriving at his apartment building, Spencer handed her the to-go boxes with their desserts before unlocking the door. A sense of bewilderment washed over (Y/N) as she followed him inside. Before she could voice her confusion, Spencer moved behind her and gently covered her eyes with his hands, guiding her further into his apartment.
The faint scent of his cologne lingered in the air as (Y/N) let herself be led by Spencer through the dimly lit hallway. Her heart raced with a mix of anticipation and curiosity, her trust in him unwavering as he guided her with careful steps. The soft shuffle of their feet echoed in the corridor, creating a rhythm that seemed to match the beat of her own pulse.
After what felt like an eternity of darkness behind her closed eyelids, Spencer's hands finally left (Y/N)'s eyes, revealing a mesmerizing sight before her. As she blinked away the temporary blindness, a gasp escaped her lips at the magical scene that unfolded in front of her.
The room was transformed into a whimsical wonderland â an elaborate pillow fort stretched across the space, twinkling with fairy lights that cast a warm, inviting glow. Soft blankets cascaded down like waterfalls, creating nooks and crannies that held the promise of cozy comfort. The air was scented with old books, eucalyptus, and lavender, adding to the ethereal atmosphere that surrounded them.
Spencer watched (Y/N) with bated breath as she took in the sight before her. The flickering lights danced across her face, illuminating the awe and wonder reflected in her eyes. It was a moment frozen in time, suspended between reality and a dream.
"Happy birthday, (Y/N)," Spencer's voice was barely a whisper, filled with a vulnerability that he had never dared to show before.
Tears welled up in (Y/N)'s eyes, moved by the effort and thoughtfulness he had put into creating this enchanting surprise. She turned to face him, her heart overflowing with emotions she struggled to put into words.
"Spencer, this is... it's perfect," she finally managed to say, her voice trembling with emotion. She reached out to grasp his hand, holding onto it as though afraid this magical moment would slip away if she let go.
As they settled into the cocoon of blankets and pillows, Spencer grabbed his laptop from his desk and popped a DVD into the disc player. The opening to a movie he had never seen but had heard her talk about multiple times, Clueless, played in the background but all he could do was look at her. Under the twinkling of the fairy lights he could almost swear she had to be a fairy herself. Thatâs the only thing he could think of that would explain her beauty.
As the movie played on (Y/N) explained to Spencer that it was actually an adaptation of her favorite novel by Jane Austen, Emma, which did little to make him feel the main character was more likeable but watching her happily chatter about the movie filled him with a sense of comfort and affection. This is how it should always be, he thought to himself, wrapping his arms around her as she settled against his chest.
They sat and cuddled in a comfortable silence until it was broken by her voice, soft and timid as she said, âhey Spence?â
âHm?â He hummed into her hair, his eyes closed.
âWhy did you do all of this?â She queried, sounding like she was on the verge of tears, which immediately pulled Spencer from his half asleep haze.
Spencer thought about his next words carefully, taking so long that (Y/N) was about to ask if he had fallen asleep before he finally responded. âAfter seeing you so heartbroken last night and seeing how Warren just tossed you aside like you didnât matter I just felt like I should show you how much it means to me that you exist." His voice was gentle, barely a whisper as he confessed the depth of his feelings for her.
(Y/N) felt her breath catch in her throat at his words. The vulnerability in his voice touched her heart in a way she had never experienced before. She turned to look into his eyes, seeing the sincerity and care reflected back at her.
Tears glistened in her eyes as she reflexively leaned into his hand as he reached to cup her cheek, caressing it with a tenderness that spoke volumes. "Spencer," she murmured, her voice filled with emotion, "you didnât have toâIâm not worth all thisâI-I donâtâ"
He placed a finger on her lips, silencing her words. "Thatâs what Iâve spent all day trying to show you, (Y/N). You are worth it. You are worth everything to me," he whispered, his gaze unwavering.
In that moment, (Y/N) felt a rush of emotions swell within her, a mix of disbelief and overwhelming gratitude. Her heart pounded in her chest as she gazed into Spencer's eyes, seeing a depth of love and sincerity that she had never expected to find. The weight of his words hung heavy in the air, wrapping around them like a warm embrace.
As they sat there, suspended in time, (Y/N) felt a gentle tug at her heart urging her to lean forward. She hesitated for a moment, uncertainty clouding her mind as she debated the implications of such a gesture. Could she allow herself to be vulnerable again after everything she had been through? Was it worth risking her heart for the possibility of something more?
But before she could overthink it any further, Spencer's gaze softened even more as he leaned in towards her. In the briefest moment of hesitation, his lips hovered centimeters away from hers, silently asking for permission. And just as he began to pull back, (Y/N) plunged forward, closing the distance between them as she pressed her lips against Spencer's. It was a tender, tentative kiss filled with all the unspoken words and emotions that had lingered between them for so long. The world seemed to stand still as they shared this intimate moment, their hearts beating in harmony.
Spencer was momentarily stunned by the sudden turn of events, but as he felt (Y/N)'s warmth against his lips, all doubts and insecurities melted away. When they finally pulled away, they were both met with flushed cheeks and wide eyes. There was a charged energy in the air, a newfound connection that sparked between them like a flame igniting in the darkness.
"(Y/N)," Spencer whispered, his voice barely above a breath as he searched her eyes for confirmation.
(Y/N) simply smiled, a radiant expression that lit up her face with joy and relief. âI love you, Spencer,â falls from her lips before she crashes them back against his.

kang sae-byeok x smallbusinessowner!f!reader
you catch feelings for a girl who stole from you (dammit empathy)
you run a cozy little boutique thatâs become your pride and joy.
itâs small but successful, bringing in enough to let you live comfortably.
you love the job with the regulars who visit your shop brighten your days.
however, you never expected your world to shift because of one quiet stranger.
the day she walks in, you notice her right away. sheâs tall, lean, and moves with a kind of cautious grace that catches your attention.
she doesnât say much, just browses the shelves, her sharp eyes scanning everything like sheâs committing it to memory.
you smile at her, trying to make her feel welcome, but she doesnât return it. instead, she nods briefly before turning back to the display.
something about her intrigues you, but you brush it off, focusing on other customers.
it isnât until later, when youâre counting the dayâs earnings, that you notice somethingâs wrong. you count the cash again, heart sinking as the realization hits you.
$1000 is missing.
you check the security cameras, and there she is. the quiet girl from earlier, her hand darting into the till while you were in the back.
your stomach twists, not with anger, but with confusion and disappointment.
the next day, you spot her near the boutique, standing by a food cart.
part of you wants to let it go, to just write it off and move on, but you canât.
so you approach her, calling out softly. when she turns to face you, her expression hardens, her guard going up instantly.
âi think we need to talk,â
you say, keeping your voice calm.
she hesitates but doesnât run. you gesture toward a nearby bench, and to your surprise, she follows. for a moment, thereâs silence between you, her eyes darting around like sheâs preparing for an escape.
finally, you ask,
âwhy did you take it?â
âi needed it.â
you donât push, just wait. eventually, she sighs, her shoulders slumping slightly.
âshit.. it's for my brother⌠heâs all i have. weâve been through a lot. north korea, the border, everything. iâve been trying to keep us afloat, but itâs⌠itâs hard.â
her voice cracks just a little on the last word, and something in your chest aches.
you can tell she does not talk about this a lot.. holding back in some way.
you could be furious, you could demand the money back or threaten to call the police, but instead, you ask,
âwhy didnât you just ask for help?â
âbecause no one helps people like us.â
âwhat if i could help you?â
ânot with a handout, but with a job.â
âa job?â
you nod.
âi need someone to help out at the boutique. itâs honest work, and I will pay you more than enough for you to take care of your brother.. and yourself. you wouldnât have toâŚâ
you trail off, not wanting to say the word âsteal.â
she stares at you.
âwhy would you do that? after what i did?â
âbecause i believe in second chances, somewhatâ
âand because i can see how much you care about your brother. youâre doing everything you can for him, even if itâs not the morally right way.â
she doesnât answer right away, her gaze dropping to her hands. for a long moment, the two of you sit in silence. then, finally, she nods.
âokay,â she says quietly.
âiâll take the job.â
the first few weeks are tense. sheâs reserved, her walls firmly in place, and you give her the space she needs.
sheâs a quick learner, though, and her work ethic is undeniable. slowly but surely, she starts to open up, sharing small glimpses of her life.
you learn her name..sae byeok.. and about her brother, whom she adores more than anything.
the both of you are the only workers there, which is nice to sae byeok.. meaning that she does not have to be known as the one coworker who got the job by stealing.
one day, you catch her slightly smiling as she helps a customer pick out a scarf. its a young boy. she's smile is small, barely there, but it makes your heart swell.
"who is that?"
you smile, seeing sae bye looking a little happier with the boy than usual.
"that's my little brother, cheol."
she leans against one of the clothing racks.
sheâs starting to trust you, you can tell.
when her brother gets sick a few months later, she shows up to work with red-rimmed eyes and an unsteady voice.
you donât ask questions; instead, you tell her to take the day off and slide a little extra into her paycheck that week.
she tries to refuse when she noticed it on her paystubs, but you insist, and for the first time, she hugs you.
âthank you,â she whispers, her voice trembling.
âfor everything.â
âyou donât have to thank me,â
âjust promise me youâll keep moving forward.â
and she does. little by little.
the boutique becomes more than just a job for her...itâs a place of stability, safety, and even joy.
sae believed that her life would have been filled with torture in order to get her brother out of the orphanage and in her care.
she still needs to get her mother out of north korea, which she is saving the money she is working for, slowly, for the broker.
weeks turn into months, you notice small changes in sae byeok.
the way her gaze lingers on you a little longer than necessary, the faint smile she gives when you laugh at something that really was not that funny
plus the way she quietly checks on you during slow moments in the shop.
sae is careful, guarded, but thereâs something unmistakable in the way she looks at you now.
you try to ignore it at first, chalking it up to her growing comfort with you, but then you start noticing things about yourself.
for example, how the shop feels a little emptier on her days off, or how you find yourself looking forward to seeing her first thing in the morning.
when sheâs gone, it feels like the air is missing something...a quiet, grounding presence thatâs become more important than you realized.
one evening, as youâre closing up, sae lingers by the counter, her usual brisk goodnight slower than usual.
she hesitates, her hands brushing the fabric of her jacket, before finally saying,
âi.. i like working here. itâs different.â
you look up from the register, her words catching you off guard.
âdifferent how?â
she shrugs, but thereâs a softness in her expression.
âit feels⌠safe.â
your heart stumbles over itself at the quiet vulnerability in her voice.
âiâm glad,â you say, smiling at her.
âyou deserve that reassurance, sae, and I am glad that I am giving it to you.â
for a moment, she just looks at you, like sheâs trying to memorize the way you said her name.
she nods, mutters a quiet âgoodnight,â and heads out the door.
you find yourself standing there long after sheâs gone, the warmth of her presence lingering even in her absence.
when sae helps you restock shelves or rearrange displays, her hands brush against yours more often than coincidence can explain.
you tell yourself itâs nothing, but your heart betrays you every time sheâs near.
one day, youâre alone in the shop during a rare quiet afternoon.
sheâs organizing a rack of scarves, her focus entirely on the task at hand, and you find yourself watching her, the sunlight catching in her dark hair.
she looks so calm, so at peace.
âwhat?â
she asks, catching your gaze.
ânothing. youâre just⌠good at this.â
she raises an eyebrow, smirking slightly.
âfolding scarves?â
âeverything,â you admit softly, and the words slip out before you can stop them.
sae's hands still, and for a moment, you think youâve said too much.
âyou mean that?â she asks, her voice quiet, almost uncertain.
you nod, your throat suddenly dry.
âyeah, i do.â
âi think about you a lot,â
she admits, her voice barely above a whisper. âeven when iâm not here.â
your heart races at her words, a warmth spreading through your chest.
âme too,â you confess, the words coming easier than you expected.
âi miss you when youâre not around.â
for a moment, neither of you say anything.
slowly, she reaches out, her fingers brushing against yours in a hesitant, tender gesture. itâs small, but it feels like the most significant thing in the world.
you donât pull away.
instead, you let your fingers curl around hers as you hug her in your embrace, happy that she is here with you.. and safe.

ctrl-alt-del | jjk (teaser)
summary⢠you graduated bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but, to your extreme disappointment, your big girl job isn't turning out to be nearly as exciting as you thought it would be. still, you're holding out hope that your talents will soon be recognized and your coworkers will stop trying to include you in their gossip sessions. enter jungkook, the quiet IT guy who's gradually making your days more bearable. (and if you find him easy on the eyes, that's nobody's business but yours.) pairing⢠jungkook/reader teaser word count⢠1.4k genre⢠smut | humor | office!au warningsâ˘Â nothing too bad for this teaser! just a mention of oral
a/nâ˘this fic has literally been sitting in my wips for YEARS lmao. i feel like it's finally time to set it free đď¸â¨ it's looking like it's gonna lean more towards pwp, but there's definitely still enough plot in there to keep it interesting. not sure when it will be up, but wanted to share a snippet to get your thoughts and get myself excited to finish the last leg--fingers crossed for the next month or so đ¤đžđđžđ
When you graduated top of your class with a marketing degree and a job already lined up, you werenât big-headed to assume you would be given a lot in the beginning. No, you knew that you were the new kid on the block and needed to prove yourself first, needed to work your way up from the bottom. But what you definitely didnât anticipate was working up from thefigurative trenches, almost exclusively doing busyworkâconstantly making coffee runs, catering business lunches, printing out endless spreadsheets.
Eighty-thousand dollars in debt, and you are a glorified intern.
Youâre positively itching to hit the ground running and get your hands dirty, your job isnât too bad. The people there are all nice and welcoming, the complimentary coffee in the break room is decent enough for your dwindling bank account, and every couple of weeks, the company sponsors an employee barbecue were everyone can fraternize and enjoy free food.
âApparently it fosters unity and teamwork,â your coworker Joy informs you as you both stand in the food line. âSeokjinâthatâs our CEOâis really big on unity and teamwork.â
Joy is also a member of your marketing team. Though as sweet as can be, she has no filter, and thus always has a lot to say about everythingâwhich has helped you when it comes to learning the ropes about the company, but has also had you clutching your imaginary pearls in some situations where you found it inappropriate. Despite only being a year older than you, her title of Marketing Associate (instead of your measly Assistant)means that she technically outranks you, though she doesnât usually enforce that fact (unless there was something that needed to be copied or filed, of course). Still, she immediately took you under her wing when you first started, and she is the closest person to a friend you have at work (even though her daily coffee order is always so ridiculous, you are convinced that she has to be fucking with youâor at least engaging in some form of mild hazing.).
âI think itâs nice,â you reply. âIâll never say no to free food, and they let us out early and everything.â
âI mean, pretty sure you can get the hotdogs twelve in a pack at the dollar store,â Joy quips, raising her eyebrows at you pointedly. âBut sometimes the boys from Sales take their shirts off and play soccer, so thereâs that.â
Your eyes dart to said Sales boys against your will, gaze drawn to Jung Hoseok as he chats animatedly with his teammates by the tables. Youâve only spoken to him once or twice, but his fiery red hair and even brighter smile caught your attention immediately, your heart rate accelerating at the sight of him in hallways mere days into starting your new position. Who better to have a mild work crush on than a sweet-talking salesman who winks at you sometimes in passing?
An appreciative noise has you turning back around, embarrassed at being caught ogling how shapely Hoseokâs butt looks in his dress pants today, but itâs just Wendy from accounting, Joyâs best friend and thus a harmless, familiar face. Wendy has cut in front of a few editors to join you and Joy, and the way that she smiles at you lets you know sheâs up to no good. âHeâs cute, huh?â she asks, leaning towards you conspiratorially. âI would definitely give him the good olâ suck behind the dumpsters over there, if you catch my drift.â
âErrâŚyeah, I do,â you reply awkwardly. She had been explicitly clearâkeyword explicitâso there definitely isnât any room for misunderstandings. Is this truly appropriate work function conversation? From the way the editors behind you are politely clearing their throats, you think not.
âBehind the dumpster?â Joy asks curiously. âHeâs standing right next to some sturdy tables that I, for one, would take great advantage ofââ
âIâm gonna go get us some drinks,â you announce loudly, your neck heating up. âCan you grab me a hot dog, Joy?â
âSure,â she says dismissively, already distracted by her sudden debate with Wendy about the most convenient place to suck off salesman Jung.
The whole conversation is making you uncomfortable. You are not a prudeâfar from itâbut there is a time and place for everything, and your coworkersâ blasĂŠ attitude towards speaking about inappropriate topics at company functions on company time rattles you a bit. So instead of engaging in the risquĂŠ discussion further, you make your way to the cluster of brightly-colored coolers that presumably hold beverages, sidling up to the only other person lingering the area.
âAnything good?â you ask cordially, making your coworker, who had apparently been deep in thought while considering his beverage options, startle a bit.
Heâs tall, his large frame covered in the appropriate business casual attire of nice jeans and a powder-blue buttonup. When he turns his head to look at you, youâre met with large, dark eyes blinking in surprise from behind wire-rimmed glasses. Said eyes dart around for a moment before determining that you were, in fact, speaking to him.
The man clears his throat. âJust the usual,â he says, voice soft. Timid.
âThe usual?â you repeat. There are little hoops dangling from his earlobes, and you brush off your surprise at seeing them, returning your gaze to the coolers. Water, a clear soda, a cola. âThe basics, you mean. Well, canât really complain, right? Seeing as itâs all free. I think itâs really nice of them.â
Your companion seems surprised at your words. âIt is,â he agrees softly, eyes meeting yours for a second before dropping back down to the cooler. âUm, are you...are you new?â
âDamn, I guess my coverâs blown.â You shoot him a wry smile. âYeah, I just started a couple of weeks ago. What gave it away?â
âItâs justâno one else here really cares about these barbecues anymore,â he admits, looking at you, but not quite. More like, in your direction. âEveryone has forgotten to appreciate the little things.â
âNothing is a given,â you shrug. âSo you need to appreciate things when you can. And besides, those lots of little things can really add up without you realizing it.â
He finally seems to look at you properly, and the weight of his large, gentle brown eyes throws you off for a second. âThey can,â he agrees, lips slowly drifting up.Â
âWhat do we have over here?â a loud voice interrupts, a hand falling to your shoulder. You look up, and are met with the brightness of salesman Jung.
âAh,â Hoseok says with a wink, reaching into the cooler. âI love Sprite.â
âMe too,â you reply automatically, and then immediately want to smack yourself. Because you donâtâcarbonated beverages make you break out. But your mouth had formed the lie without your permission.
Embarrassed, you reach into the cooler, grabbing three water bottles. âSee you later,â you squeak, avoiding eye contact as you make your escape.
Joy and Wendy are already watching you when you return to where they have procured a table, and when you hand them their waters, Joy raises an eyebrow. âI was wondering how long you were going to talk to that IT guy.â
âYeah, and why did you leave when Hoseok showed up?â Wendy pouted. â_____, the universe is only going to give you so many opportunities. If you donât want the ball, then pass it to me! Goddamn.â
âIT guy?â you ask, hoping to slide past that last remark.
âYeah. His name is Jungkook, I think? Mostly works with the printers, started a couple months ago.â Joy shrugs, obviously disinterested by the topic. She reaches for the ketchup bottle in the center of the table and squirts some on her hot dog. âThis is the first time Iâve seen him at a barbecue, though. Honestly, Iâm surprised he even came out, because the IT dudes generally keep to themselves. The rarely leave their little tower,â she adds with a dismissive wave.
Wendy scoffs. âWho cares about Jeremy! Hurry up and eat, Iâm sure Sales is gonna start their soccer game soon.â
âSoccer game?â you ask.
âThe sales department likes to play soccer during these things,â Joy informs you. Her expression brightens. âHey, maybe Hoseok will take his shirt off again! Let us pray.â
To your coworkersâ disappointment, Hoseok did not take his shirt off. But they certainly had a good time watching him run back and forth across the grass.

The smell of baking filled the streets of Hakuriki Town. Intoxicating smells perfectly blending together to create the constantly sweet and indulgent atmosphere that kept all the residents in a warm and happy mood. Well maybe not all. Sadly you couldn't exactly join the others around you in their positivity and cheer when you were trying to keep yourself restrained and polite. All you wanted was to just work but instead you had to suffer the annoyance of a coworker standing a little too close and being far too persistent.
âSo we both finish our shifts at the same time today.â He began while you glared down at the dough you were kneading expertly. Quickly you forced your expression into one of false calm. You were newer to this bakery and the one trying-and failing- to charm you was the Bossâ favourite. The last thing you wanted was to cause problems and make waves this early. âWhat do you say you and I go for a well-deserved drink?â
âOh that'd be fun!â You said with false enthusiasm. Youâd refused him so many times already by feigning tiredness or pretending to feel unwell that you needed to try something different. Todayâs tactic: ignorance of his intentions. You turned to face him with as sweet a smile you could muster as you put the tray of dough into the oven. âIâll let the others know and we can make a night out of it. I think we could all do with a work outing after how busy this week has been, donât you?â
âItâd be kinda awkward bringing the others on a date though.â He laughed, completely sidestepping your plan with ease. âThe last thing I'd want is to make them uncomfortable, yâknow?â You held back the urge to punch the man in the face. He didn't want to make the rest of your coworkers uncomfortable but had no problem doing it to you if it meant you went on a date with him? Taking things up a gear you blinked at him in surprise.Â
âDate?" you repeated innocently. âOhâŚI thought you were only asking me out as a friend. I'm sorry but I'm not single.â
Oh you wished you could have fully savoured the bewildered and disappointed look on his face but you were too busy training your expression, appearing apologetic for the misunderstanding. You wished it hadnât come to this; having to lie about your love life in order to get him to back off but if it meant he stopped asking you out it would be worth it. Then your eye twitched minutely to see your coworkerâs confidence slip back into his features. Even that statement wouldnât deter him from his pursuit. âYou're seeing someone? Is it serious?â
âItâs still new but Iâm very happy with them.â You explained while moving to grab ingredients to start work on the next batch of pastries. Your boss hadnât spotted you and your coworkerâs idle chatter but if they did, youâd be the only one to be lectured. Not giving them the chance you set about work while gnashing your teeth in frustration, feeling your coworker follow close behind you. You could feel the questions brewing on his tongue and tried to get ahead of it, in the hopes of finally killing the conversation you never wanted to be a part of in the first place. "So happy in fact I don't think he'd take kindly to hear someone else wants to date me.â
"Who is he? I think I could win a fight against him for your affections.â The bold declaration brought a sharp laugh from your lips before you could stop it. Everything already pointed to this guy thinking he was amazing at everything but you knew to look at him he was certainly not a fighter. Quickly you cleared your throat and decided you may as well commit to the lie fully. You needed to think of someone not even his ego would compete with while also being someone who he wouldn't directly have any involvement with. You couldnât work out why it was the first name your mind conjured but it was out of your mouth before you could come up with anyone else. "It's Katakuri.â
For the rest of the day your coworker left you alone, creating as much distance between you both as possible. Your plan had worked too well. He didnât question you at all because only someone with a death wish would falsely claim to be seeing a member of the Charlotte Family. When your shift ended you stepped out onto the street and let out a sigh of relief only to freeze at the sight of the Minister of Flour himself leaning against the wall of the building opposite your work. From the look in his eyes you saw that he knew. Was it some sort of sadism that he let you work for hours and finish your shift before ending your life? Somehow you felt enough strength return to your legs to carry you forward the last few steps until you were in front of Katakuri. âSoâŚpublic execution or imprisonment?â
âBoth seem like a harsh punishment.â Katakuri began as he stepped away from the wall and you couldn't help but grow still at how calm his deep, powerful voice was. You then became confused when his eyes slid from your face to look at something behind you. âAll he did was ask you out but you set him straight.â Your eyes widened and you heard a panicked squeak behind you but you couldnât bring yourself to look away from the man in front of you. âHad he touched you however, that would be a different conversation.â
You held back a gasp when Katakuri put his arm around you and pulled you into step to walk with him down the street. As light as the action was you could feel the immense power in his hand but you didnât feel any fear. You felt reassured and protected but your mind was racing. Were you dreaming? What was happening? There was no point in asking how he knew about your lie because the Charlotte family ruled Totto Land, they were powerful enough to learn anything they wished. When you were far enough away from your work you managed to form enough thought to speak the one question you could ask. Nervously you glanced down at his hand still against your body. âWhy did you play along?â
âItâs not really important is it?â Katakuri asked, you glanced up and saw that of what you could see of his face his expression was unreadable. âI could ask why you said my name but it wouldnât really change things. The results are the same. Your coworker wonât bother you again.â
âThat may be but that only works out in my benefit.â You stated with a small tilt of your head your curiosity only growing. âWhat could you possibly be getting out of this little charade?â
âWho knows?â Katakuri mused, watching your lips fall into a small scowl in dissatisfaction at the answer. âYou work in a bakery right? Make me some doughnuts and we can say thatâs my motivation to keep up your lie for as long as you need to.â
You blinked and let out a soft laugh. Katakuri had his own personal chefs and bakers that could make him anything he desired. Why heâd want your baking baffled you but if it meant he would continue to let you use him to get out of be asked out by people you had no interest in, it was a good trade. âAre you going to break up with me if they donât taste as good as what youâre used to?â
âOnly if theyâre completely inedible.â Katakuri let out a small chuckle, amused that you felt so at ease around him to joke that way. He was already aware of how good a baker you were but he said nothing. The truth of the whole situation was that when he used BrĂťlĂŠeâs mirro-world to enjoy his merienda in peace, she kept the mirrors connected to Hakuriki activated so he could still ensure there were no dangers to the island he was in charge of. In that time one conversation caught his attention in particular because of how persistent and grating one voice sounded. He was subjected to hearing your get asked out again and again. Every time you patiently came up with something to end the conversation, your coworker pressed again and again to the point Katakuri became irritated on your behalf but that was just civilian problems. One of many minor grievances people had to deal with, hardly something that required his involvement. Then you conjured up his name as your boyfriend. He wasnât going to lie, he had been impressed at that and to finally hear your coworker immediately shut his mouth Katakuri decided for that blessing you deserved a reward by legitimising your lie.
âThis is me.â You spoke up, spotting your home come into view. âStop by my work tomorrow and Iâll have your doughnuts ready for you.â
âI look forward to it.â Katakuri told you sincerely, watching you step out from his relaxed hold and walk towards your home to turn in for the evening. When you were inside, Katakuri couldnât help but smirk underneath his scarf. He hadnât fully known what to expect when he waited for you outside the bakery but now he was certainly interested in what was going to happen next.

[8:09 pm]
(cw: f!reader)
The car rumbled down the street, a cold silence filled the car. You started out the passenger window while husband!Renjun looked at you from the corner of his eye.
It had been a rough afternoon for the two of you. Renjun failed to tell you about a huge gala he had for work that night even though you had already both agreed to celebrate your wedding anniversary tonight. Your anniversary celebration that had already rescheduled since Renjun would be out of town. You knew this wasnât his fault exactly, he couldnât control when he had to leave for work but the idea of spending your first wedding anniversary alone didnât feel nice.
The gala though, that was his fault entirely. He swore he told you but there were no texts, emails, and nothing in the calendar you both kept up to date. Not to mention that he had told you it was black tie with only 3 hours until he had to be there.
You had wasted half an hour of that time arguing, another hour and a half getting ready and the last hour walking around department stores and boutiques looking for a dress that fit the dress code. And Renjun had been a major pain in your ass the entire time!
He would excitedly tell you found something and when you turned he would be holding a bright, gaudy dress with entirely too many ruffles. He did that countless times and each time you fell for it. You were already annoyed that he had waited until the last second, annoyed that the reservations you had planned were now useless, and annoyed that you had to spend your honorary wedding anniversary shmoozing Renjunâs coworkers.
He tried to make you laugh, tried to compliment you, talk to you like everything was ok but you wouldnât budge! He sighed, fingers tapping at the steering wheel nervously, âyou really do look beautiful. That dress fits you perfectly.â
You huffed like a grumpy child, âno, it doesnât. Itâs too long and the chest is too big.â
âWell, I canât tell, you look gorgeous.â
âAnother thing you donât pay attention to,â you murmur under your breath.
Renjun sighs, pulling into the front of the venue and sliding out of the car to give the keys to the valet. The valet gets to your door before he can, but he can feel his nerves calm when you hook your arm through his. He tried to help you fix the skirt of your dress but you swatted his hands away.
He groaned under his breath, fine, if you wanted to be petty, he could be even more petty. He knew he messed up, but geez woman! How many time were you going to make him apologize?!
He straightened out his bow tie and entered the venue with you on his arm. He smiled at one of his bosses and walked over, âMr. Lim! So good to see you again! I donât know if you remember but this is my darling wife.â His hand squeezed your waist as he drawled out the word âdarling.â You smiled and introduced yourself to the older man, standing by as the ever interested wife as they both made small talk.
Every introduction that followed was the same. You were Renjunâs beloved wife, his dear wife, his sweet wife, the wife he adored and with every introduction you felt the genuine disappointment from earlier melt into mild, playful annoyance.
After Renjun had had enough of introductions and led the two of you to your seats you finally took the bait. âI know what youâre doing Mr. Huang, just because you describe me with all these cute little adjectives doesnât mean youâre forgiven.â
Renjun hides a smile from behind the rim of his glass, âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âOh! This is my precious wife who I love with my whole heart and soul, do you remember her?â You mimic in a low growl.
Renjun laughs brightly, âI donât sound like that! And I didnât gush about you like that.â
âYou basically did. Now everyone here knows who wears the pants in this marriage.â
Renjun grabs your hands and waits for you to look at him. When you do you find his gaze soft and apologetic, âI really am sorry. It completely slipped my mind and in the future I will absolutely stay on top of keeping you informed. Can you find it in that big, beautiful heart of yours to forgive me?â
You fiddled with the wedding band on his ring finger, âIâm more annoyed that you kept pulling hideous dresses when we didnât have a lot of time to get here.â
âI will never, and I mean never, give you fake fashion advice again.â
âWell, Iâm sorry for throwing a fit about it too. I accept your apology, my favorite husband.â
âHey! Iâm your only husband. Forever.â
