Nosferatu (2024)
Alright, so I have seen a fair amount of discourse surrounding Nosferatu (2024) on my feed, and concerning my background (a degree in film studies and a ravenous appetite for heated debate) I thought I'd weigh in. This is a long post. FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS POST I WILL NOT SPEAK ON WERNER HERZOG'S REMAKE OF THE FILM-- ITS JUST NOT AS RELEVANT TO MY POINTS.
I'd like to preface this by saying that this is MY OPINION. I accept that your opinion might differ and you might disagree with me. That's fine. But, because all of these are opinions, you cannot tell me I am incorrect, because that makes no sense. SO!
My first point of contention with the film is that it is mistakenly evaluated as an adaptation of Dracula. So, I must rigorously explain. The original Nosferatu film from 1922 was indeed heavily inspired and technically PLAGIARIZING Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. In fact, after it was done so, Florence Balcombe (Stoker's wife) had a furious legal battle with the production company and had almost every copy of the film burned. The only reason we are able to watch and study the film today is due to illegal, pirated copies and the meticulous piecing together of the film and its inter-titles by enthusiasts, historians and rigorous preservation.
Now, there are notable differences between Nosferatu (1922) and the Dracula novel, including the names of both the vampire and his primary female victim, and the inclusion of a NUMBER of other characters including Dr. Seward, Lucy, etc. We could argue foils or connections to many characters between the book and the film but most of them are fairly obvious so I will gloss over it. Renfield=Knock, Harker=Hutter, Mina=Ellen, etc. There are additionally a large number of thematic similarities. However, the primary distinction I would like to highlight is the differentiation between Count Orlok as a MONSTER type character, and Count Dracula as a suave nobleman who happens to also be a vampire. I'm not saying our boy Drac hasn't done some seriously horrible things, but even if you compare the first Dracula film (1931), Dracula's character is MUCH more of a ladies man, so much so that Bela Lugosi became something of a sex icon.
The 2024 remake (though I don't like this word, as the new film adds a lot that the 1922 film does not have) is incredibly distinct from this concept. That does not change the fact that this film is a re-done Nosferatu and NOT Dracula! Nosferatu is distinct from Dracula in that Count Orlok is intentionally framed as a monster. Orlok is framed as having had this vampiric affliction at the end of his living life and has since died and descended into this depraved state of undead wherein the only real human aspects he maintained is his body and the ability to speak and articulate thought. He is a monster. Despite what anyone with a monster-related kink or preference might say, Count Orlok in the 2024 Nosferatu is not supposed to be attractive, nor is he supposed to be a love interest. That brings me to my next point.
I am fully aware that both Lily-Rose Depp and Robert Eggers have explained the film contains a "love triangle." But I'm here to tell you something and I'll hold both sides of your face while I say it loudly. This is an oversimplification stated as an explanation to the audiences for them to understand that there is sexual tension between Ellen and Orlok, Ellen and Thomas, and Orlok and Thomas. All three of them. This. Does. Not. Mean. They. Are. In. Love. This movie is not a romance. It's not a love story. And when myself and others describe it as romantic, because it is, this is not referring to the concept of romance wherein two people love each other. We are referring to the Romantic Period of art and intellectualism that heavily inspired the Gothic Period and emphasizes the concepts of subjectivity, passion and individualism. I cannot stress this enough. The only romance happening is between Ellen and Thomas. And even then it's a capital-T Tragedy.
Ok now let's get into some plot. There is a hefty amount of discourse about Ellen and her relationship to Orlok and the themes surrounding her. This is the biggest point where (I believe) people get things wrong. Firstly, there is ZERO point in the movie where we are led to believe that Ellen was a child when she first encountered (and was raped by) Orlok. Lily-Rose is still playing Ellen at that point and it only says "many" years, which is subjective, so I draw the conclusion that we are not dealing with a theme of child sexual assault. The film doesn't carry that tone, in my opinion, and there are specifics surrounding children that I'll get into later.
I am of the opinion that Ellen's character goes through incredible trauma in this circumstance, having only been searching for companionship and pleasure and existence and receiving a manifestation of your worst nightmare. She is traumatized by this circumstance, yes, but she is also then conflicted with her own lust and desire. I don't believe its for Orlok, I think it's more about the idea that women, especially in this time period, were made to feel ashamed and horrified at the very notion of initiating sex or showing qualities that one might deem "whorish." Her character then uses this situation with Orlok as an opportunity to banish these imposed social conceptions and instead allow herself this sense of pleasure and companionship, even if it comes from a monster. These themes are about reclaiming her own sexual agency with Orlok because she'd be seen as a crazy bitch either way. "Do you ever feel at times that you are not a person?" Yeah, girl, you're a woman in 19th century Germany. You're not a person. And thus sprouts your trauma.
ORLOK. Is not a manifestation of her shame and horror. Orlok is his own thing, thereby emphasized by the amount of actual Romanian folklore and cultural reference woven into the film. He is established as a being and his own character. He can act as a stand in for the purpose of carrying that theme, but it is SO much more layered than him simply being a manifestation of her disgust. Besides, if this is a remake, you have to honour at least some of the original. You can't just turn Orlok into a metaphor and completely disregard the vampire storyline. He is an appetite and nothing more. He is death. He's a fucking monster. He doesn't have sexual preference because he's above such trivial human bullshit. He feels pleasure in satiating his appetite thus the sexual nature of his attacks. He's a guy that got fucked/is getting fucked by his own immortal curse (pun intended.)
Ok so his relationship with Ellen is born of this one time where he, as an immortal being who's not really a person anymore, heard this hot young lady call out for someone and he jumped on it. We're not entirely sure why he left her alive... perhaps I've discovered a plot hole. If you can give me something other than "he liked her" then I'll give it to you, but I'm not convinced that's why. Either way, he has a thing for maidens, that's pretty straightforward for vampire folklore. And once Thomas shows him the token she gave him, Orlok gets a taste of his hot woman again and is like yeah, I gotta hit it again. His obsession grows, though I'm gonna say it's because it's more along the lines of fate and the story of the nosferatu and the woman who needs to sacrifice herself by giving herself up to him than because she has some kind of magic pussy. Her role in his demise is sort of pre-set on a cosmic sort of level (this sounds weird but hear me out) she's not entirely with it when she puts her hair in the locket. She's moving on autopilot because she has this kind of gut feeling that if she follows these weird instincts she can feel the pleasure and liberation she's craving and that she got a glimpse of in her weird murder wedding dream. She's not actually an enchantress, and Orlok basically calls her this as an insult because his logical/rational side is pissed that all he can think about is her and her blood.
None of this means that Ellen does not love Thomas. Of course she does. He loves her, is good to her, basically gives her everything she ever wanted EXCEPT this one taste of kinky pleasure that she will never stop dreaming about because it's SUPERNATURAL.
Side note I ADORE the three days motif. It's simple and thick.
Ok so about children. Orlok kills two (and a half, idk) children in this movie. The Harding kids and Ruth's unborn fetus. This murder is POINTEDLY UNSEXUAL. You know why? Because they're kids. That's an on-purpose thing, everyone. Vampires are sexual creatures, it's inherent, that's literally a huge point. This is not an opinion, it's a fact. It's all rooted in sexual themes and eroticism and homosexuality. Vampires should not be kids. That movie Abigail? Garbage. I hated it. Didn't even enjoy the camp, it was poorly done. And vampirism is not a kid-friendly venture. Eggers made that known in that scene and I ADORE him for it.
AAAND FINALLY. Orlok does not disappear because the sun came up. Holy shit. They literally outlined the exact specifications of his destruction and it being just right at dawn is a symbolic choice and made to be a COINCIDENCE. In the OG, yes, he is disintegrated in sunlight. We are introducing a new storyline here with Ellen being the key to his demise, and no previous sunlight-destroying was mentioned.
At this moment, I can't think of any more points I had but I'm sure they'll come up. If you want to counter anything I said feel free! Send me an ask or reblog or whatever you want, but let's keep it respectful. This is all MY interpretation and yours is just as valid as mine is. I love true debates, so if we can shoot ideas back and forth, I'd love it!

Nosferatu (2024)
Yesterday was a milestone birthday for me, so my brother and I got together, went to dinner, and went to see an early showing of Nosferatu so we wouldn't get caught by the snow.
I went in knowing the story about the original movie. It was basically Dracula with the serial numbers filed off, character names and locations changed, and a few aspects of the story changed. I even saw the original long enough ago that I remember more of the look of the film than the actual plot.
I had several impressions of the version I saw yesterday. First of all, I could see the German Expressionist influence in the look of the movie. The sets and some of the shots looked like they could have come straight of the 1922 version.
My second impression was that this was the movie F. W. Murnau probably wanted to make, but the industry and the technology weren't nearly sophisticated enough for him to be able to.
My third impression was that this movie was Dracula with the glamour and the romance stripped away. I know there are people out there who were cheering for Orlock and Ellen as a couple, and for Thomas and Ellen as a couple, but neither of those relations were healthy in the slightest.
Orlock and Ellen had a spiritual connection, yes, but their relationship was as toxic as fuck. He literally fed on her. He was obsessed with her to the point where he was willing to destroy everything and everyone she loved if she didn't come back to him, to the point where her only option was to willingly give in to him and ultimately sacrifice herself.
Thomas and Ellen were married - husband and wife. They did love each other, but their marriage wasn't healthy either. He knew she suffered from melancholia - what we'd call clinical depression today - and when she tried to tell him about what she was afraid of and what was coming, he didn't listen to her and he didn't take her seriously. She had little to no power or agency in the relationship, but considering that the movie was set in 1839 - a full fifty or sixty years before Dracula happened to the Harkers - a healthy relationship by 21st century standards wouldn't have been possible.
Another thing that struck me was the lack of glamour. In the Francis Ford Coppola version of Dracula, all of the women - Mina, Lucy, and even Dracula's brides - were gorgeous. Their clothes were the height of 19th century elegance, their hair was done beautifully, their makeup was beautiful. Even when they were dying or losing their minds, they were beautiful. In Nosferatu, that glamor was stripped away. Ellen wore plain no-frills day dresses, her hair was tied back in a simple bun, and she wore little to no makeup. Even her friend Anna's clothes and makeup were comparatively simple.
Even the sex scenes were stripped of romance. The scene in the beginning when Orlock is feeding off of Thomas, there is absolutely no question of what the subtext in that scene is. The only scene where we see Thomas and Ellen together is after she told him about Orlock, is half out of her mind from grief and guilt and horror, and he's not doing too well either, and they are both fully clothed. There is tenderness in the scene with her and Orlock, but on her part, she is sowing the seeds of his destruction in her actions. The desire may have been there, but she did not love him.
Nosferatu was basically a stripped-down rip-off of Dracula, but it boiled the story down to its essence - a monster stalks a young woman, threatens her and the people she loves, and whether she survives or not depends on the trust and faith she and the people around her have in each other.

Okay idea that you totally don’t have to do anything with:
Xavier’s darling is (like me) a history nut and knows about a lot of history from all over the world from reading books and watching documentaries
So when Xavier decides to start a long lecture about Colvakia’s history because his future wife needs to know these things, darling finishes his sentences and eventually takes over the lecture as Xavier sits there stunned with major heart eyes
I just know he’d be so happy and think that it was so cute that his darling already knew all about his homeland, he might even think it’s fate
This is so long, but I couldn’t help it! Inspiration struck, ya know? Also I assure you, I am working on that Tom fic!
Xavier taps a baton onto a large map that hung up on the wall.
“Ok, dahling, listen up. It is absolutely vital that you learn and remember the history of Colvakia, if you want to rule it one day with me.”
You were sat down at a table, notebook and pencil at the ready. You nodded your head eagerly, being the little nerd you are.
“Alright then. Colvakia for quite a while was part of Österreich-Ungarn, or as you may know it, the Austro-Hungarian empire. But in 1918 the Great War, or World War 1, ended and the empire was dissolved. Colvakia was one of the countries that were formed.”
Your eyes shined with excitement, the eager learner you were.
“But in 1922 the Soviet Union was formed. And a few years before that the Romanovs were assassinated. This is where the history of Colvakia really starts to begin.”
You eagerly raise your hand, practically bouncing on your toes. Xavier sees this and raises an eyebrow.
“Yes, dahling?”
“But aren’t the Devorskýs related to the Romanovs?”
Xavier nods his head, content with the question.
“Very good, dahling! We in fact are related to the Romanovs! We were cousins that managed to evade the slaughter. And this is important why..?”
Xavier lead me on with that question.
“So it makes your claim to the throne legitimate!”
Xavier chuckles at your eagerness.
“Correct, once again (Y/n)! 100 points to you!” Xavier snaps his fingers, instantly summoning a servant. “You there, get the future tsarina some ptichye moloko! I think she’s earned it after such a-“ Xavier goes in to caress her cheeks “-wonderful answer” Xavier steps back and the servant scuttles off, probably to the kitchen.
“Now, with the Soviet Union now formed, you can imagine some people did not want any part in it, or wished for refuge. So that is how Colvakia got such a surge in Russian citizens. But, around World War 2 we were conquered by Germany, then the Soviets. You can understand how this was an awful time for us.”
You solemnly nod your head, thinking to all the suffering that must have occurred.
“We mostly kept to ourselves, primarily farming. And by some miracle, we were relinquished to our own devices! The Soviets were too busy on other fronts, that we were able to be relinquished from their grip!”
You raise your hand again.
“Wasn’t that called the Day of Miracles?”
Xavier eagerly nodded his head, so happy with your answer.
“Yes, it most certainly is! It got its name because of how many miracles seemingly occurred that day. For one, the fact we got our independence back so quickly. The second being forces from other countries thinking we were still occupied by Germany, and the fact most of the Soviet forces that were present were redirected. Many say it took an act of God for all to happen, hence the name.”
“Now, we were in an interesting state. We needed to rebuild, and most of our citizens were immigrants from Russia or other countries. But we were also heavily Austrian-Hungarian still, hence where we get our 3 main languages or German, Russian, and English.
Now, here’s where the Devorskýs come in. My great grandfather, Dominik, was a rather wealthy man as he came from rather high ranking Russian nobility. But they also used that money to build varying companies, along with farms. He had a specialty with breeding peacocks, hence the prevalence of them here. Either way, Dominik was also known as a rather kind man, who essentially spearheaded the rebuilding efforts. In fact, many buildings here are named after him because of his funding of philanthropy.”
You oohed, at this fact, as it finally answered why you’ve seen so many buildings with the name Dominik.
“Now, Colvakia was in need of a government, and we played around with regular democracy for a bit there. But it was terribly, terribly corrupt in our case. It was how we ended up under the thumb of the Germans, then Soviets. Also, it was completely and utterly rigged. So still reeling from that, we thought it was best to stay away from that form.
But we also saw how badly communism affected us, and knew it wasn’t a viable option. So that mostly left a monarchy as the only option.
Oddly enough, Dominik had-“
You couldn’t help it anymore, you had to blurt out what you knew!
“Dominik was volunteered for the role because of his philanthropy and him being a leader already! Also people liked him being descended from Russian royalty so they eventually declared him King! Then Colvakia slowly gained more land from either purchases, or some countries volunteering to join them! That’s how Colvakia got to where it is today!”
You panted, trying to catch your breath after blurting out so much. Meanwhile, Xavier just stared at you, in awe.
“Y-yes. Absolutely correct!”
Before you knew it, you were being absolutely bombarded with kisses.
“Correct! All of it! Wunderbar dahling! Wunderbar!”
Xavier let out a chuckle
“You cheeky little thing, I bet you were just trying to put me under your spell even more!”
You chuckled as well
“Well did it work? But in all seriousness, I just really love history.”
“Well, it’s certainly clear you are meant to be queen one day. And here I thought I couldn’t fall in love even more~”

fast eugene facts bc god forbid i make a doc lmao.
born in saint martin parish, louisiana - specifically in bayou chene - on june 28th, 1922. the family home still stands there, and has been allowed to reside in the family name via shield and local government.
in some semblance of a typical fashion with familial x genetic mutation, the genetic code skipped a generation from eugene's grandmother to him. his oldest brother was also born with the genetic code for mutation.
middle of five boys. two older brothers, two younger brothers.
kind of a mama's boy tbh. growing up at least.
grandmother was a traiteur, a role he was supposed to inherit per tradition.
eugene enlisted in the army in 1942 and served as a surgical tech overseas in the european theater.
of the five boys, he was the only one to survive the war. both his younger brothers were killed in the pacific theater, his older brother was killed on the beaches during d-day, and his oldest brother took his own life after being denied service in relation to medical issues.
he'd come home after v-e day and get married, only to end up back on the frontlines during the korean war.
in the mid 50's, eugene would end up snatched up coming home from working in an factory by an internal organization looking to replicate the super-soldier program without the government or guidance.
ends up under the knife, so to speak, as a human experiment. they're pretty stoked to find out he's already "genetically different" and believe that will aid in a success story rather than a hideous demise.
good news is, his insides don't melt. bad news is, the benefits / rewards aren't all there because of existing genetic coding and the way it interacted with everything.
is eventually rescued though, that's cool.
botched super soldier serum ends up leaving him tentatively ageless but forgets the super strength and stuff.
leaves his wife in the late 50's because his brain is soupy as hell and he feels selfish in chaining her to a tremulous marriage with a dude who's head is turned around.
spends the next few decades "repaying" the govt / shield for saving his ass. essentially ends up in a dod revolving door under new identities because what the fuck else is there.
rly just views his existence at this point as, my only purpose is to help others, otherwise there's no reason. because of his core beliefs pointing toward mutations being gifts from god, he can't exactly throw himself into the void.
after serving during the gwot as a green side navy corpsman, he ends up going back to school (utilize those gi benefits, folks) and becomes an emt.
exists in a time capsule of an apartment in hell's kitchen, perpetually tired and so over it lmao. typically trying to figure out how local heroes and villains alike get into his place when he isnt home.
stitches them up despite the breaking and entering.
still smokes way too much, but at least its not in his apartment anymore. dude's been smoking since 1916 if you don't like it don't try it kinda mentality.

N. C. Wyeth illustration for Sidney Lanier's The Boy's King Arthur (1922) "Then the king ran towards Sir Mordred, crying, 'Traitor, now is thy death day come.'"
Prophecy of Arthur's Death by Sir Mordred his son Then Merlin came by in the semblance of a fourteen-year-old boy; he saluted the king and asked him why he was so pensive. “I may well be pensive,” said the king, “for I have seen the most marvelous sight that I have ever seen.” “I am well aware of that,” said Merlin, “and I know your thoughts as well as you yourself do. But you are a fool to worry about things that will not do you any good. Also, I know who you are—who your father was, and of whom you were begotten. For King Uther was your father and conceived you on Igraine.” “That is false!” said King Arthur. “How could you know that? You are not old enough to have known my father.” “Yes,” said Merlin, “I know this better than you or any man living.” “I will not believe you,” said Arthur, and was angry at the child. So Merlin departed and then returned again in the likeness of an old man of eighty years of age; this made the king glad, for he seemed to be a wise man. Then the old man said, “Why are you sad?” “It is understandable that I would be sad,” said Arthur, “for many reasons. Just now there was a child here who told me many things that it seemed to me he could not know, for he was not old enough to know my father.” “Yes,” said the old man, “that child told you the truth, and he would have told you more if you had allowed him. But you have done a thing lately which has displeased God: you have lain by your sister and on her you have conceived a child that shall destroy you and all the knights of your realm.” “Who are you,” said Arthur, “who can tell me these things?” “Sir, I am Merlin, and I was he in the likeness of a child.” … Then King Arthur had all the children who were born on May-day sent for—those who were begotten of lords and born of ladies—for Merlin told King Arthur that he who would destroy him and all the land would be born on May-day. So he sent for them all on pain of death, and the sons of many kings and the sons of many knights were rounded up and sent to the king. And King Lot’s wife sent Mordred. They were all put in a ship and sent out to sea. And some were four weeks old, and some less. So by fortune the ship was wrecked near a castle, and the greatest part of it was de- stroyed. But Mordred was cast up onto the beach, and a good man found him, and fostered him until he was fourteen years of age, and then brought him to court, as it relates near the end of the Morte Darthur. Many lords and barons of the realm were displeased that their children were lost. Many blamed Merlin more than Arthur, but out of fear and love, they held their peace. —Sir Thomas Malory, Morte D’Arthur trans. by Dorsey Armstrong
