Armand likes to play the martyr. Specifically the long-suffering martyr who does nothing but sacrifice, and sacrifice, and sacrifice (“picking lint off the sofa”). Playing the martyr is an intertwining of servitude and domination. He’s sacrificing for you, he’s serving you, he’s nothing but your humble servant, and it’s through that dynamic he asserts both domination and innocence. It’s easy to portray innocence when you’re playing the martyr. If everything he does is framed as service for someone else, even his cruelty and manipulation can be framed as acts of service within that pattern of behavior (“you asked me to [wipe your memories]”, “this prison of empathy,” etc.). Within this dynamic, any pushback against Armand also frames him at the victim (see: his big puppy eyes and tears whenever Louis so much as gives a harsh word, “it was love”). Everything he does is for you, can’t you see that? Can’t you see how it wounds him when you suggest that this isn’t for you? Can’t you see how ungrateful and selfish you sound when everything he does, he does for you? Simultaneously, since he’s always the one cleaning up, always the one serving, it gives him control. He controls the windows in the penthouse. He gets the books and the diaries off the shelf. Acts of service, all for Louis. Louis tells him jump, he asks how high. But it also means that Louis can only ever make requests of Armand. Even if he frames them as commands, the request/command being carried out is still contingent on Armand’s cooperation, and Louis doesn’t have a way to force Armand’s hand, because Armand’s so much older and more powerful.

It’s like this in Paris, too. His failure there was “his one act of cowardice” and his hands were tied, because “the coven gave him a choice.” Never mind the fact that he can easily subdue the coven, never mind the fact that he could’ve told Claudia and Madeleine to run, never mind a million other things. He frames his actions as the only time he’s lapsed in his devotion to Louis. Not a failure of power, but a failure of love. It’s a failure not because he didn’t save Claudia, but because he hurt Louis. And it’s such an egregious failure he has to spend eternity making it up to Louis (“have I even moved one step forward?”), once again positioning him as the long-suffering martyr who does nothing but love and sacrifice and serve. Cue puppy dog eyes.
