Nairobi è una città nella quale, in pochi chilometri, si passa dal paradiso all'inferno. O meglio agli inferi: ce ne sono tanti in quell'area! Il più terribile, forse, sorge a fianco della baraccopoli: l’enorme e spaventosa discarica di Dandora, dove arrivano i rifiuti dei ricchi della capitale, per l’esattezza i rifiuti dei rifiuti; vi lavorano migliaia di persone chiamate “scavengers” (i raccoglitori di rifiuti).

Un giorno, mentre camminavo fra le baracche, fui bloccato da un uomo della discarica, un “gigante” che mi guardò dall'alto in basso: «Muthungu» (bianco), mi disse, «sei il primo bianco che ha avuto il coraggio di vivere qui.
