Jerusalem Old City
One of the holiest and most contentious places on earth, the Old City of Jerusalem is a hugely historic area, significant to Christians, Jews and Muslims. Visiting it can be overwhelming, in terms of the maze of streets and number of people, including many tour groups. There are four main gates into the Old City, and a number of smaller gates. Thinking today also of Palestinians. Ukrainians. Folks in way too many regions of conflict or oppression who might wonder whether they can see hope in the international community. Workers and unions and small- and medium-sized business owners in places and industries dependent on trade, for whom planning for the coming year, quarter, even month might soon come with the uncertainty and anxiety that their trade could be slowed or halted on a whim. Farmers and consumers in Mexico and Canada who worry they might find their markets subject to competition from less-regulated producers next door. Scientists and the acutely climate-threatened, who worry they might lose funding, development of or access to datasets, or find gaping holes in the monitoring systems their work depends on. Bipoc, lgbtq+, Muslim, Jewish, Sikh folks; disabled folks; allies and live-and-let-live folks everywhere who worry that their home governments might follow where others claim to lead. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Hang in there. The world is scary, so much is in flux, but you're not alone. 💕

Libby Spotlight: Popular Mysteries
Don’t Believe It by Charlie Donlea
The Girl of Sugar Beach is the most watched documentary in television history—a riveting, true-life mystery that unfolds over twelve weeks and centers on a fascinating question: Did Grace Sebold murder her boyfriend, Julian, while on a Spring Break vacation, or is she a victim of circumstance and poor police work? Grace has spent the last ten years in a St. Lucian prison, and reaches out to filmmaker Sidney Ryan in a last, desperate attempt to prove her innocence.
As Sidney begins researching, she uncovers startling evidence overlooked during the original investigation. Before the series even finishes filming, public outcry leads officials to reopen the case.
Delving into Grace's past, Sidney peels away layer after layer of deception. But as she edges closer to the real heart of the story, Sidney must decide if finding the truth is worth risking her newfound fame, her career... even her life.
The Night Shift by Alex Finlay
It's New Year's Eve 1999. Y2K is expected to end in chaos: planes falling from the sky, elevators plunging to earth, world markets collapsing. A digital apocalypse. None of that happens. But at a Blockbuster Video in New Jersey, four teenagers working late at the store are attacked. Only one inexplicably survives. Police quickly identify a suspect, the boyfriend of one of the victims, who flees and is never seen again.
Fifteen years later, more teenage employees are attacked at an ice cream store in the same town, and again only one makes it out alive.
In the aftermath of the latest crime, three lives intersect: the lone survivor of the Blockbuster massacre who's forced to relive the horrors of her tragedy; the brother of the fugitive accused, who's convinced the police have the wrong suspect; and FBI agent Sarah Keller who must delve into the secrets of both nights—stirring up memories of teen love and lies—to uncover the truth about murders on the night shift.
The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey
Bombay, 1921: Perveen Mistry, the daughter of a respected Zoroastrian family, has just joined her father's law firm, becoming one of the first female lawyers in India. Armed with a legal education from Oxford, Perveen also has a tragic personal history that makes her especially devoted to championing and protecting women's rights.
Mistry Law is handling the will of Mr. Omar Farid, a wealthy Muslim mill owner who has left three widows behind. But as Perveen goes through the papers, she notices something strange: all three have signed over their inheritance to a charity. What will they live on if they forefeit what their husband left them? Perveen is suspicious.
The Farid widows live in purdah: strict seclusion, never leaving the women's quarters or speaking to any men. Are they being taken advantage of by an unscrupulous guardian? Perveen tries to investigate and realizes her instincts about the will were correct when tensions escalate to murder. It's her responsibility to figure out what really happened on Malabar Hill, and to ensure that nobody is in further danger.
This is the first volume in the “Perveen Mistry” series.
The Lady in the Silver Cloud by David Handler
A 1955 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud is a fantastically expensive car, especially in the pristine condition of the one owned by Muriel Cantrell. Living in a luxury apartment building on Central Park West, the delicate, sweet 75-year-old woman is a neighbor of Merilee Nash, the beautiful movie star, and Stuart Hoag, whose first book was a sensation but whose career crashed when he became involved with drugs and alcohol. Divorced ten years earlier, Hoagy has been welcomed back into Merilee's life and apartment.
Apparently universally beloved in her building, residents are shocked when Muriel is murdered after a Halloween party. No one takes it harder than her long-time chauffeur, Bullets Durmond, whose previous job was as an enforcer for the mob. Who in the world would want to harm the silver-haired lady whose major vices were buying shoes and Chanel suits (always in cash), and watching day-time soap operas?
Lieutenant Romaine Very of the NYPD is called to investigate and again seeks help from his friend Hoagy who, along with his basset hound Lulu, has been an invaluable aide in the past. The investigation leads to the unexpected source of Muriel's wealth, the history of her early years as a hatcheck girl at the Copacabana, how her chauffeur came to be called Bullets, her desperate meth-head nephew, and her wealthy neighbors, who have secrets of their own.
This is the 13th volume in the “Stewart Hoag” series.

It's really a common occurrence way before the whole 9/11 thing too. This bashing of Arab culture and Islam has been ingrained into fiction since ages ago. To be honest, the only times media ever embraces these cultures and religions in a positive light is when it's convenient for them in terms of advertising and marketing. Very rarely are Muslim or Arab characters there - and not villains, but protagonists - for the sake of the plot or just for the sake of the story.
And if they are there in a positive light, it's always either them appearing for a few seconds/minutes or having their culture and religious identity stripped away. Not just in comics, but movies, shows, novels, every single piece of media that exists.
Obviously, there are other margnilized or dehumanized groups who face the same thing, but personally, as a Muslim girl, I find it completely ridiculous that *points at the comic panel* that exists. I find it completely ridiculous that whenever there are shots of people walking by in streets (in comics too), there is not a single person wearing hijab or having a full beard or- any culturally identifying features that identify them as Muslim. You can't tell me that when Muslims are present in more than a quarter of the world's population, you can't spot even one of them roaming the simple streets of a packed city.
It's more than disappointing. Furious, sure. But to me, it's just disheartening and sad.
TW: racism
I think the way that comic book media has uncritically pushed anti-Arab racist propaganda (among other kinds) for decades upon decades is an important thing to acknowledge. Like it's not just a couple of bad apples here and there, it's always been pervasive. So many stories, so many villains, so many Arab coded fake evil countries. That kind of thing desensitizes people, dehumanizes entire groups. The politics of media designed for young men and boys (and not just them but for years that was the only audience that mattered, thanks sexism) has consequences.
Seriously, what was this:
As far as I'm aware this never even got an explicit retcon.
I was a little Muslim boy in the mid 2000s reading a Death in the Family because I wanted to know what happened to Jason Todd, and I didn't understand the depths of the propaganda that was being fed to me. I was so desensitized to hearing about terrible things happening in the middle east, and evil terrorists that I didn't question it. And my parents talked to me about what was going on and how it was wrong. But I was still a little kid and I loved Batman and I wasn't at the point where I could really look at the narrative critically, to realize that the authors have worldviews that are biased. I don't think I even grasped that different people wrote the characters. Iran electing known super-terrorist-serial killer-baby eating clown The Joker to represent them because he understood their values is yes, notably crazy, but most of this stuff isn't so loud and obvious, and we didn't leave it in the 80s. Just look at what happened to the depiction of Talia and Ra's post 911 and how they progressive became less human. So just think about the generations of kids reading this crap who had no counter messaging at all. Where does that leave their empathy?
I'm not saying that everything we're seeing is the fault of comic books, that's stupid and reductive and insulting to the complexity of the reality. But what I'm saying is that a lot of these narratives are actively complicit in the kinds of inhumanity we're seeing. Marvel thinking it's appropriate to throw Sabra into a movie in current day is a glaring transgression but it's not some kind of strange outlier. Lots of those films are actively funded by arms of the American military, just look at Captain marvel and Iron Man. And if anyone likes imposing an agenda onto the narrative, it's the military. A lot of this is baked into the fiction, and we owe it to ourselves and others to actively contend with what that means.
I dunno I'm just mad, and disappointed and maybe a little guilty that it took me this long to really realize the full state of things. I spent a lot of time blindly consuming. Like these books were created to be aspirational, to show good people trying to make a better world. But as always happens when art is completely beholden to money, they still serve the politics of the ruling class at the end of the day.
#which is why in every one of my fanfics where ocs appear there is at least one Muslim oc#most of the time they're hijab-wearing women bc i'm a hijab wearing women#but let the world see that muslim characters can exist and be a key part of the plot and still have the story propel forward with no issues#quotidian convos

Two 'Trinity' artworks by Charlie Carrillo, New Mexico
Charles M. Carrillo (born 1956, Albuquerque, New Mexico) is an American artist, author, and archeologist known particularly for creating art using Spanish colonial techniques that reflect 18th-century Spanish New Mexico. Carrillo’s works have shown throughout the USA and are a part of many permanent collections in United States museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, DC, the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, and the Denver Museum of Art among others.
Here are two of his 'Trinity' artworks:
1 La Santisma Trinidad, 1998 Lithograph, 13 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. https://www.mutualart.com/Artwork/La-Santisma-Trinidad/CB42FF926E76193CC697FFD2BE76BC12

2 Santisima Trinidad, undated 49.21 x 31.43 x 2.54 cm. hand-adzed pine panel with natural pigments on gesso https://www.mutualart.com/Artwork/Santisima-Trinidad/23C4B34335CD1C3C?signup=1
This piece obviously references the famous 'Trinity' icon by Rublev, with three seated figures.
+++
Charles Carrillo’s interest in archaeology led him to his life’s work as a santero, a carver and painter of images of saints. https://www.newmexicopbs.org/productions/colores/artist-charlie-carrillo/
See a PBS video about his art at https://youtu.be/uwNbt9AOkZ8
+++
In addition to his work as a santero, which he describes as a vocation rather than a job, Carrillo teaches at the University of New Mexico, works with the artists-in-residence program for the state of New Mexico and conducts workshops at schools throughout the state. “At one point I figured out I had seen over 17,000 young students,” he said. “More than three-quarters of the santeros at the Spanish Market now either have either been my students, worked with me or have taken classes from me. That’s where my life has been. My life has been promoting the tradition.
“Even if the kids never do artwork, I truly believe that they get an appreciation for the culture and the traditions. The saints were made for one purpose and one purpose only: to tell stories. We see them as artwork nowadays, but historically they were made to tell stories to pass along values and morals and religious philosophies. I think it’s important that kids of different faiths, different backgrounds — whether they’re Jewish or Buddhist or Muslim or even Protestant — get an appreciation for the longevity of the tradition in New Mexico and get an understanding of a people’s culture and tradition.” http://www.mastersoftraditionalarts.org/artists/50

Malaysian palm oil to trade between 3,700-4,500 rgt/T until mid-2025, analyst Mistry says MUMBAI, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil is likely to trade between 3,700 to 4,500 ringgit ($885 to $1,053) a metric ton from now until June, as demand is expected to be buoyant during the Chinese Lunar New Year and the holy month of Ramadan, industry analyst Dorab Mistry said. The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for December delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 42 ringgit, or 1.08%, to 3,918 ringgit ($937.74) a metric ton as of 0604 GMT on Friday. "Prices will begin a new bull market in Jan-March 25. The combination of Chinese New Year and Ramadan in the Jan-March quarter is bullish," said Mistry, a director of Indian consumer goods company Godrej International, in a presentation at industry conference Globoil in Mumbai on Friday. Palm oil consumption tends to rise during the Chinese New Year festivities. Similarly, consumption of edible oils usually jumps during the holy month of Ramadan, due in late February and March next year, as Muslims gather for communal feasts to break their fast. Demand for vegetable oils from the food and energy sectors is likely to grow by 6 million metric tons in 2024-25 mainly due to rising consumption in Brazil, India, Indonesia and the United States, Mistry said. He added factors such as crude oil prices, overall climatic conditions and weather conditions in South America - a leading producer of soybeans - would weigh on palm oil prices. Any move by India to reduce tariffs later this year or next year would be a key factor in determining palm oil prices, Mistry said. India last week sharply raised the basic import tax on crude and refined edible oils by 20 percentage points to help protect farmers reeling from lower oilseed prices. Despite the hike in import duties, India's edible oil consumption is set to grow at a pace of 2% to 3% as cooking oils remain affordable, Sanjeev Asthana, CEO at Patanjali Foods Ltd PAFO.NS, a leading importer, told Reuters on Wednesday. Mistry said U.S. soyoil futures would continue to benefit from brisk biodiesel demand.

Beijing: The Heart of China
Beijing, the capital city, is a treasure trove of historical landmarks and cultural experiences. Begin your journey with a visit to the Great Wall of China, one of the most impressive architectural feats in human history. Stretching over 13,000 miles, the Great Wall offers stunning views and a glimpse into China's ancient defensive strategies.

Wander through its vast courtyards and ornate halls, and imagine the lives of the emperors who once resided there.
Don't miss the Temple of Heaven, a masterpiece of Ming architecture. This temple complex, used by emperors to pray for good harvests, is surrounded by beautiful gardens and offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city.
Beijing's Hutongs provide a glimpse into traditional Chinese life. These narrow alleys, lined with courtyard residences, offer a stark contrast to the modern skyscrapers of the city. Take a rickshaw tour or stroll through the Hutongs to experience the charm of old Beijing.
Xi'an: The Ancient Capital
Xi'an, one of the oldest cities in China, was the starting point of the Silk Road and served as the capital for several dynasties. Marvel at the intricate details of each figure, no two of which are identical.
Visit the Ancient City Wall, one of the best-preserved city walls in China. Rent a bike and cycle along the top of the wall for panoramic views of Xi'an. The wall is especially beautiful when illuminated at night.
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a Buddhist pagoda built in the Tang dynasty, is another must-see. Climb to the top for a bird's-eye view of the city and learn about the pagoda's historical significance as a center for translating Buddhist scriptures.

Papers in Finland are still talking about Sunday's European election, in which the National Coalition took the top spot but the Left Alliance surge was the big story.
The party claimed three MEP spots off the back of Li Andersson's stellar performance in which she recorded nearly a quarter of a million votes — more than any other individual candidate has received in any legislative election in Finland.
The previous record was held by Paavo Väyrynen, a veteran Eurosceptic and former Centre Party politician, who opposed Finland's entry into the European Union but then, like many others hostile to Brussels, sought election to the European Parliament in the first European election in 1996.
Väyrynen's total of 157,668 votes was eclipsed by Andersson, who secured the support of 247,604 voters on Sunday.
Iltalehti caught up with the now-retired Väyrynen to ask how he felt about that. He had fulsome praise and congratulations for the Leftist leader and said it was only a "matter of time" before someone beat his record.
"She fought a wonderful campaign and has been excellent as a party leader and a presidential candidate," said Väyrynen.
Convicted candidates
Helsingin Sanomat checks in on the candidates with criminal convictions who ran in the election. One of them, Sebastian Tynkkynen, of the Finns Party, was elected with more than 34,000 votes and will leave the Finnish parliament to take up his spot in Brussels.
In 2023 Tynkkynen was convicted of incitement over online comments about immigrants and Muslims.
HS reports that four of his fellow Finns Party candidates also had convictions, but were not elected as the party's result was poorer than expected.
In addition, Jarkko Malonen of the Open Party ran despite a 2011 conviction for attempted manslaughter. He received 54 votes and will not be heading to Brussels.
Housing market gloom
Taloussanomat is one of many outlets to pick up on Danske Bank's newest housing market assessment, which offers a gloomy picture of the property market.
The bank is now predicting no growth at all in property prices, when its previous forecast showed an average increase of half a percentage point.
The bank says that high interest rates are holding back buyers, but that 2025 could see 3.5 percent growth in housing prices.

Exploring the Rich Tapestry of China: A Journey Through History, Culture, and Natural Wonders
Introduction: Welcome to an odyssey through the vast and diverse landscapes of China, a land steeped in ancient traditions, bustling metropolises, and breathtaking natural wonders. From the iconic Great Wall to the misty peaks of Zhangjiajie, each destination offers a glimpse into China's rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. Join me as we embark on an unforgettable voyage through the Middle Kingdom, uncovering the secrets and wonders that await at every turn.
Day 1-3: Beijing - A Glimpse of Imperial Majesty Our adventure begins in the heart of China's capital, Beijing, where ancient history meets modernity. We'll wander through the sprawling expanse of the Forbidden City, once the exclusive domain of emperors and empresses, and marvel at the grandeur of Tiananmen Square, a symbol of China's revolutionary spirit. Of course, no visit to Beijing would be complete without a trek along the iconic Great Wall, where we'll stand in awe of this monumental feat of engineering.
Day 4-6: Xi'an - Gateway to the Silk Road Next, we'll journey to the ancient city of Xi'an, a living testament to China's rich cultural heritage. Here, we'll marvel at the awe-inspiring Terracotta Army, an army of thousands of life-sized clay soldiers guarding the tomb of China's first emperor. We'll also explore the vibrant Muslim Quarter, where the sights, sounds, and smells of the bustling market stalls offer a sensory feast for the senses.
Day 7-9: Chengdu - Home of the Giant Pandas Our next stop takes us to the laid-back city of Chengdu, known as the gateway to China's enchanting southwest. Here, we'll visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, where we'll have the rare opportunity to observe these iconic creatures in their natural habitat. We'll also indulge in some authentic Sichuan cuisine, known for its bold flavors and fiery spices.
Day 10-12: Guilin and Yangshuo - A Journey Through Karst Landscapes Leaving the urban bustle behind, we'll immerse ourselves in the ethereal beauty of Guilin and Yangshuo, where limestone karst formations rise majestically from emerald-green waters. We'll cruise along the Li River, passing through a landscape straight out of a Chinese scroll painting, and explore the quaint villages and rice paddies that dot the countryside.
Day 13-15: Zhangjiajie - Avatar's Floating Mountains Our final destination brings us to the otherworldly landscapes of Zhangjiajie, immortalized in the film "Avatar." We'll ascend to the towering sandstone pillars of Tianzi Mountain and take in panoramic views of the mist-shrouded valleys below. We'll also venture into the otherworldly landscapes of the Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, where we'll walk amidst towering rock formations that seem to defy gravity.
Epilogue: As our journey through China draws to a close, we're left with memories that will last a lifetime. From the ancient wonders of Beijing to the ethereal landscapes of Zhangjiajie, each destination has left an indelible mark on our hearts. But as we bid farewell to this ancient land of wonders, we're reminded that the spirit of adventure lives on, beckoning us to explore new horizons and embark on new journeys. Until then, farewell, China, and may your wonders continue to inspire and captivate travelers for generations to come.....Read More

The Holy Family, 1985 Buick
"The Holy Family, 1985 Buick" by American artist Charlie Carrillo.

Charles Carrillo’s interest in archaeology led him to his life’s work as a santero, a carver and painter of images of saints. https://www.newmexicopbs.org/productions/colores/artist-charlie-carrillo/
See PBS video about his art at https://youtu.be/uwNbt9AOkZ8
+++

McDonald’s blames Israel’s war in Gaza for missing sales target
McDonald’s has cited Israel’s war in Gaza as a factor in the fast food giant missing its first quarterly sales target in nearly four years.
McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said on Monday that the war had had a “disheartening” effect on sales in Middle Eastern countries and other Muslim-majority nations such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

“So long as this conflict, this war, is going on … we’re not expecting to see any significant improvement in this,” Kempczinski said in a conference call.
“It’s a human tragedy, what’s going on, and I think that does weigh on brands like ours.”
Sales growth for the fast food chain’s division for the Middle East, China and India during October-December reached 0.7 percent – far below market expectations of 5.5 percent.
The slump comes after customers in Muslim countries called for a boycott of McDonald’s in response to its Israeli franchisee donating thousands of free meals to the Israeli military.
Following the announcement by McDonald’s Israel, franchisees in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain and Turkey distanced themselves from the donations and collectively pledged millions of dollars in aid to Palestinians in Gaza.
While Chicago-based McDonald’s is known as one of the most iconic US brands, most of its restaurants worldwide are locally owned and operated.
Kempczinski said last month that the war and “associated misinformation” was having a “meaningful” effect on business in the region.
McDonald’s is among a number of Western brands that have been hit with boycotts due to their perceived support for Israel.
Last week, cafe chain Starbucks slashed its annual sales forecast, citing a slump in business in the Middle East.
Despite its flagging fortunes in Muslim countries, McDonald’s posted relatively strong results overall, with global sales growing 3.4 percent, compared with 8.8 percent in the previous quarter.
“We remain confident in the resilience of our business amid macro challenges that will persist in 2024,” Kempczinski said.
