Some Kotobuki thoughts

EDITED (forgot one thing)

Overall, I give the show about 4/10. After my first watch I gave it a 7/10 but I think hype to finally see the show was clouding how much I was enjoying it. I was projecting what I wanted it to be onto what it was.

After watching Kotobuki for a second time (Well half, I woke up late and missed the first half) I wanted to pull together my thoughts on it as I knew I didn’t enjoy it very much, but I didn’t really understand why, especially since the show seems so popular with people.

This is not the most positive review and I understand that I have no idea what was going on behind the scenes but that does mean I can only judge what I saw and think on what I would have preferred.

Not a spoiler free review but limited spoilers (No specifics like which songs they performed)

1.      I think part of it is my bias in that there are 4 toumyu actors I don’t rly like as their roles and 3 that I find painful to watch. Two of those are Ryuji and Mario. They featured so prominently in the show that I think that made my enjoyment suffer a bit. This is not the show’s fault at all, just my preference though.

2.      The show really suffers from not having everyone there. I completely understand Haruki had health issues so him not being there is fine, but I think the show would have been much better if it was only one day but included everyone, like Daienren was planning to do. The show felt incomplete with other actors filling in in the team songs for people who weren’t there. As a 5th anniversary it would have been much better to have everyone to perform their group songs. To me the show feels like a one-day show. A lot of it is exciting the first time but seeing it again, it kinda feels weird. Like I have a feeling of ‘Well they already celebrated, seems weird they’re doing it again’.

3.      No idol outfits. I do like the suits, don’t get me wrong, but I really felt as if they should have been used just for the new anniversary song. I found it difficult to get excited for a lot of the idol songs bc everyone was in black and it seemed so serious. I love the colours in toumyu. All the idol outfits of various colours marking out who is who and being exciting to look at. In the lighting, with the suits, it was kinda hard to work out who was who as quickly and sometimes I would realise I was looking at the wrong person, not my fav, and when I looked over the camera had changed. I think the suits are beautiful and incredibly well designed but I think they would have been much better for the more serious first act/anniversary song than the idol portion. With the Kashuu, Hachisuka and Mutsu talking section it feels like they were originally gonna change but then decided not to bc of corona. I sympathise with them for any major changes they had to make bc of corona but I have no idea whether that was a change or not so I cannot take that into account.

4.      Urashima and Hyuuga. Don’t get me wrong, I rly loved both of their acting. I think they’re very good as their characters but they cannot sing. Toumyu has a vocal coach and I know other actors who got much better after joining toumyu so it seems weird to me that they haven’t (I already know Urashima’s actor from other shows). Their starting song is cute but pretty badly sung in my opinion and I didn’t rly enjoy hearing it.

So, did I enjoy anything? Yes!

5.      Song choice. Again, an extremely personal thing but I don’t like a lot of toumyu idol songs bc they sound kinda generic. And quite a lot of the songs they chose are ones that I personally don’t love. So, I was kinda bored by that.

6. Completely forgot to add. I did not like the Touken Ranbu song. I did not like how everyone sang it together, would have much rather had each character sing a line. I know that would have made it super long but it is the anniversary show celebrating the show, I think it would be great to celebrate each character individually in the Touken Ranbu song. Touken Ranbu tends to not have super long songs which is fine but I think is the one time where they should

I thought the Gous were amazing. I loved every single time they were together. I think their voices sound good together and they had amazing chemistry. Kotegiri’s song was the cutest thing ever.

I also think that Sengo was very good and loved the Tonbo – Sengo duet. (After the ending speech was super super cute)

I really liked the Paraiso team/Kotetsu siblings, I thought their songs were very good and super cute. Again, chemistry was really good. Also, the songs felt very different from the other songs which I thought was very cool.

I think the first act was really good. I love them going through every show and team one by one and think overall, excluding my complaint about the missing people, it was very good.

I think it was just kinda let down by the 2nd act, which was quite a bit longer, and by the prominence of Ryuji and Mario.

I see what they were trying to do with the show but I just don’t think it was my kinda thing.

Hi Everyone! So Oricon just released the first week sales statistic of BD/DVD of Musical Touken Ranbu 5th Anniversary Kotobuki Ranbu Ongyokusai. For Bluray disc (2 edition, Limited + Regular) TouMyu sold a total of

33,835 copies for the Limited edition, ranked as the 3rd best selling BD of the wekk and 1,432 copies for the regular edition, ranked as the 26th best selling BD of the week.

THE PRODUCTION SOLD A TOTAL OF 35,267 BD COPIES IN ITS FIRST WEEK!!

As for the DVD (Also 2 edition, Limited and Regular) TouMyu sold a total of

10,441 copies for the limited edition, ranked as the best selling DVD of the week!!! And another 1,571 copies for the regular edition, ranked as the 9th best selling DVD of the week. Kotobuki sold a combination of 12,012 DVD copies! THE TOTAL OF THE BD/DVD SOLD IS OVER 47,279 COPIES!!! THE HIGHEST EVER FOR ANY TOUMYU PRODUCTION!!!!!! This figure has almost surpassed the whole year sale of Utaawase BD/DVD!! For reference any BD/DVD that sold over 10k is considered to be a good sale number. I totally didn’t expect this at all! With the pandemic and this being more like a celebratory event more than the usual highly-scripted event like Utaawase or ShinkenRanbu I didn’t expect them to break the 20k barrier, let alone surpass Utaawase first week sale. XD it’s actually a web game (about real historical swords given human bodies, who travel through time to protect history) that’s been adapted into 2 animes (Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru and Katsugeki: Touken Ranbu), a live action movie, a bunch of stage plays (GOD AND THEY’RE SO ANGSTY IT’S GLORIOUS) and a bunch of musicals (ALSO SO ANGSTY, BUT THEN THERE’S A LIVE CONCERT/IDOL SHOW PORTION AFTER TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER AND THEY STAY IN CHARACTER THE WHOLE TIME WHICH MAKES IT EVEN BETTER YOU GET TO SEE YOUR FAV SWORS SINGING AND DANCING AND BVFIVBIEBV) XD and anyway there’s so much content and it’s glorious 

I’m currently gushing about Kotobuki Ranbu Ongyokusai, the 5th anniversary celebration of the musicals 😊 which is basically a big concert that they’re  performing this month 😊
