The dissociation—Odysseus was in no shape to carry on. Jay didn’t even need to bring up anything abt s.a. that happened on the island—just a simple comparison between the behaviors of Odysseus when he arrived and that of Odysseus seven years later: just look what happened on this island that caused him to breakdown so thoroughly. This is so perfectly done.

I saw a post mentioning that they didn’t like that Polites was part of the ghost pile that was pulling Odysseus into the Underworld at the end of Get in the Water, and I just got to thinking:

*Tiresias voice* But it’s no longer Polites~~

I think, prior to the Underworld Saga, Polites’ death was a motivating force to convince Odysseus to remain kind… but once we got to the Underworld Saga and see Polites in the first song, Odysseus is forced to confront again that Polites really is dead, see the cold hard reality of it. That’s why all Odysseus can do is mournfully repeat Polites’ name.

But by the time “Monster” is sung, and from then on, Polites is no longer a powerful motivating force, but a specter of Odysseus’s internal guilt. Polites was kind, and saw the good in everyone; how could he do that for Odysseus after all the cruel things he’s done! But I believe he would greet Odysseus with open arms even after all that. But Odysseus’s guilt over betraying Polites’ philosophy distorts his memories of his best friend to the point that thinking about it causes him great pain, and leads him to believe that Polites would disapprove of his actions, or even hate him for what he’s become.

I don’t think the real Polites would drag Odysseus into the underworld for justice, let me put it that way. Shades can be distorted in Greek mythology; some become manias, spirits of obsession, and I think Odysseus’s clouding guilt has turned his perspective of Polites mania-like, even if that’s not what he would be like in reality.

What tries to drag Odysseus from Oceanus to the Underworld is no longer Polites, and that is Odysseus’s fault.

richie deserved better too tbh. he got bullied for years by the people he called bros for life, felt like an outcast, was finally having a happy moment, and then he just got killed like that? unnacceptable. we need more richie appreciation.

the summoning is the best song hands down.

peter and stephanie are relationship goals. i mean, who doesnt wanna live in a universe where supernatural things constantly happen, people go missing every day, and the entities exist except theyre musical and there's only abt 5 of them.

hatchet town is amazing too, i mean, dan renolds, the paranoia, the panic that comes with knowing ppl are getting killed in your town, not trusting anyone, the constant finger pointing, just- UGHHHH i loved it <3

can we just mention the camera and the lighting for a sec? bc it was amazing.

lil mention: I watched this show on the crumbrulee following turkey day (which may require a bottle of pepper spray) so there's that too.

overall, this show was so freaking good, everyone go watch the hachetfield series by starkid go do it rn >:(
