it does seem like the question she’s focused on in ttpd is why. not why did this happen in an invisible string kind of way, trying to put the tragedy into a larger context. she’s not trying to find the silver lining, the hospital was just a drag. no, the question is very direct: why did you do this to me? were you sent by someone who wanted me dead? were you writing a book? were you making fun of me with some esoteric joke? was it hazing for a cruel fraternity? all these promises, oceans deep, that were broken—why did they make them in the first place? what did they want?

and so when she says, almost with a laugh “you knew what you wanted, and boy, you got her” it’s a glorious turnaround because here is someone who wasn’t of two minds. there’s no mystery about it. what he wanted was her. “where’s the trophy? he just comes running over to me” is a description of what it feels like to finally be somebody’s priority.
