ALRIGHT, STORY TIME.

When I was a kid, I used to say “mushi mushi” (pronounced “moo-shee”) whenever I did this gesture, believing 100%, in my little kid heart, that that was the word for it. I had a bigger vocabulary than other kids my age ‘cause of all the reading I did, so when others didn’t know what I meant, I assumed it was a skill issue and never once suspected I was speaking gibberish.

Now, decades later and prompted by this post, I just spent an hour thinking I made those memories up! I asked my parents if they remembered it, because I remembered them being the ones to disillusion me, and they suggested that maybe I was thinking of “same-same”, a shortening of a common Okinawan phrase. I asked my uncle, who I thought I remembered teaching it to me, and he suggested that maybe I was thinking of “más o menos”, Spanish for “more or less”. I googled frantically every phonetic variation of the phrase I could think of, to no avail; all the answers were about “moshi moshi”. I asked my brother what it was I used to say, because I thought he might remember, and he suggested that I was thinking of “maa-maa”, Japanese for “so-so”. At that point, I was ready to give up and accept that maybe I really was just thinking of “maa-maa”, and I texted him, “I could’ve sworn there was a silly phrase I used to say when we were little, like ‘mushi mushi’, haha.” And he texted back, “Yeah I guess we stopped saying it when we realized it didn’t mean that.”

!!! I had asked the wrong question! He also remembered “mushi mushi”, because he picked it up from me and also said it a lot! I wasn’t crazy!

(I mean, I am a little crazy, because I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE OUT WHERE IT CAME FROM—)

But yeah. Mushi mushi, everyone. Petition to call it that from now on?

my problem as a writer and as a roleplayer is that I always want characters to do that thing where you hold your hand out, palm to the ground, and kind of tilt it quickly left and right to express uncertainty or a "kinda-sorta"/"yes and no" vibe. but I don't know an official term for this so I always just call it the Noncommittal Hand Waggle

ushijima wakatoshi gets married at 32 and is slightly overwhelmed by the intimacy of someone sharing his family name. he thought he had experienced everything: toothbrushes next to each other, laundry with your whites mixed with his, the almost empty bag of rice that he reminds himself to get another of after practice. what he doesn't realise is how tender it feels when someone calls out for "ushijima-san!", and you react because that's your name, too. the neighbours who greet you in the lift, the dentist where wakatoshi waits in the reception, even electricity bills titled to you, because now ushijima doesn't just refer to him.

Sometimes you need to put the most annoying music known to man on loop because it jiggles some brain wrinkle just right and the words fall out again.

Anyway. RIP to my housemate who could apparently hear me writing to the original mix of The Macarena on loop for the last three hours.
