A second video from my show. Muse played Assassin, the live version that's sort of the Grand Omega Boss edit, but without the extra verse that version has. It's insane, it was mental, everyone went mental, and so my video of it is near useless, except a few gifs that show you just how much people were losing their minds. I was in a slightly more dead end of the crowd, and yet I was borderline getting tossed around (I loved it) when people recognised this riff, that hadn't been played here since like 2006!

Everything else was a blur of lights and arms lol, I'll spare you that!

I tried to mix the audio a little bit so that it doesn't sound quite as far away, but there's only so much you can do before the vocals start to muddy while you're trying to preserve the mids. Besides, Muse have live sound people, I'm sure they managed the audio right as it was going out live.

just let me gush over the boxset title - STAR CROSSED - because what does that mean?? STAR CROSSED LOVERS?? 😭

and the first audio title is SWIPE RIGHT, which has something to do with dating apps apparently.

I. AM. SO. EXCITED.

however, not everyone is as ecstatic (me too but for different reasons) because it supposedly takes away what happens in SiTL and River supposedly shouldn't meet War, 9, and 10 pre-Library. however, i respectfully disagree. should I bring up what the TARDIS (and Missy) had said? the Doctor and River are so intricately intertwined like wool wound and wound about each other and a complicated space-time event. of course River would be going around meeting different versions of the Doctor and one moot even likened it to her collecting pokemons! which is a rather cute imagery i'll never be rid of. besides, most or nearly all of the time, their memories get wiped away. also, one of my favorite uses of imagery to use for the Doctor and River is the ouroborus, they are a never ending cycle of firsts and lasts. i could also explain how all these meetings woth pre-Library Doctors don't take away the 'special-ness' of that 'first meeting' but gotta go finish this school stuff.

what else was i going to say? ah yes, if River's appearing in this boxset, would that mean we wouldn't be seeing her comeback on TV? make no mistake. i LOVE all these audios but to SEE her again be part of the ongoing show, oh what a treat (and at this rate, a miracle) it would be.

This was from my gig back in October, while Muse were on their smaller run of club dates. 2500 people. They played New Born, which I can now say I’m lucky to have seen every single time I’ve seen them play, I think? Which is insane to think about, I love that song so much.

As you can probably tell from that gasp you can hear right at the start, which was either me or the couple next to me who’d come all the way down from Montreal to Toronto for this, this was fucking massive. So understandably, the footage is frenzied and in parts utterly shit, but the audio’s all there. Plus occasional glimpses of Muse being fucking icons.

But it’s the intro to New Born that’s insane in this performance, so ethereal. Matt’s such a good pianist, he makes this kind of stuff work at a rock club. Not many other people can!

This outro is really giving me Metallica - Wherever I May Roam vibes. It’s probably a similar mode/scale?

[At a quick glance this appears to be one of Matt’s favourite to use, a harmonic minor (Dm harmonic) scale, and on quick inspection Wherever I May Roam seems like an E Phrygian. Not the same scale but they do share that D-E-F-G notes that make up a prominent part of both intros I guess]

Gosh this riff is so good, and so heavy!

NineRiver is everything to me

well, I say that for all DoctorRiver pairings lol but [seagull squawks] the NineRiver audios are everything to me now and I have thoughts thunking around about it.

[POTENTIAL SPOILERS. DO NOT READ AHEAD IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILERED]

Swipe Right felt stilted to me at first but then I realized maybe that's how it was meant to be. It was the first time River met that regeneration of the Doctor's who's fresh out of the Time War. She had to learn how to vibe with him. The continuous "I'll NEVER marry you. I don't do that." made my heart hurt honestly and I just wanted to hug River 😭 Nine may be brutally honest but he's also so kind and we see that soft!Nine in Archipelago.

Then with Face of the Apocalypse, ohh it hit me right in the gut. It made me laugh too honestly 😆 Doctor Sweetie and Miss Curly Hair <3 then I ended up bawling lmao

With the last audio, Archipelago, ohhh. I haven't been the same person I was before I listened to that audio. I have been irrevocably changed. That audio is now on the same level as Someone I Once Knew (4River). I also love how this smashes any belief that River forces the Doctor to have sex with her or do anything that the Doctor is uncomfortable with. Nine is asexual and River adjusted herself accordingly. They grew old TOGETHER and River was happy enough just holding hands with him and exchanging stories, truths with each other that no other Doctor or River will ever know.

Anyways, I've done my best to hold back from too many spoilers. SO I RECOMMEND Y'ALL TO LISTEN TO STAR CROSSED RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

The ascending and descending pianos?! This version of Cave is so beautiful, I am stunned. The way it still retains the power and energy of the original Cave even though you're used to hearing it much higher... this is masterful! The way they've changed it just enough to inject this mysterious energy into the song through the new pianos: a lot of artists transpose songs up and down, but often, transposing songs down just makes a song sound either sadder, more sombre, or just more tired—for better or worse. Starlight played half a semitone down live is just Muse leaning into the loneliness of the song, but either way, this feels different! It's got a different energy, but retains the energy levels, sounds more beautiful, more intense, differently angry, more mysterious. Muse are a gift.
