There’s a whole category of fictional character describable as “the narrative is forcing me to be not just the hero, but also the good guy, and literally nothing has ever made me angrier. All I want in the universe is to go back to being morally ambiguous and self-interested.”
And the universe said “No. Also here’s a found family 😘.”

Murtagh Fanart!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Traitor. Exile. Hunter. Hero and without a doubt our favorite emo boy!! Ladies and Gentlemen: MURTAGH!! For my Murtagh fanart I tried to make him following the descriptions in the book as much as possible and also a Han Solo vibe, since many say that Eragon is like Star Wars but with dragons, so if Eragon is kind of like Luke then Murtagh must certainly be his Han Solo. Oh and here are the visual references and credits to the artists who inspired me for this fanart version of Murtagh : @solarisetlesetoiles @chuwenjie

Thinking about Murtagh and Eragon talking about Eragon being a dragon rider. Murtagh hints at his jealousy, things progressively escalate to the point of Eragon saying that he really doesn’t like the position of leadership he’s in. He doesn’t like being away from his loved ones. Given how him being chosen by the Eldunarya destroyed parts of his family and his hometown and threw him into a war with so much death, especially of people he respected, he would have liked to live without that. Saphira’s existence and their bond is one of his only comforts. That and the fact that he’s helping to bring the dragons back.
Murtagh is surprised by this. He realizes that his assessment of Eragon was mostly false. Eragon isn’t a proud gloating leader. He’s a humble (young) man who carries an undesired role on his shoulders because no one else was there to take it from him. He later realizes that Eragon is a nurturer. He nurtures relationships, nurtures the land, gives a safe place for those whose lives have been upended by fate. He wonders… what is his own role.
He later apologizes to Eragon for his false assumptions. Eragon accepts his apology.

now i'm thinking about the banishing of the names and its making me genuinely crazy
just like imagine the creature that is literally bound to your soul, the one in the world that you are the closest too, someone you have spent your whole life with, sharing thoughts with sharing joy and jokes with. the creature that knows you better than anyone else, better than yourself, the creature that chose you, and stuck by you at your worst and your best.
imagine watching them lose themself completely, lose their name, their identity, their whole self, they're reduced to a wild animal. it's a fate worse than death and all you can do is watch, there's nothing in all your years of magic that can help you now.
your dragon isn't even dead, it's still alive it's standing right in front of you but it's wrong, the look in its eyes is blank, not the intelligent gaze you've come to expect, it's mannerisms have even changed, it holds itself differently too. it's all wrong.
and your struck with the realization that you'll never get your dragon back, even if you survive this they will never be the same, you will never fly above the clouds with them your consciousness melding together, you will never lay under their wings and be known truely, and when you try to call out their name you can't.
every memory you have of them is changed now too, a blank space in your mind and-you realize-your soul itself. maybe you let out an anguished scream but it's not right, you want to be able to call its name, to see even a flicker of recognition in its eyes.
there's nothing though, even as you scream and cry the creature shows no signs of empathy or understanding. it tears you apart, any semblance of sanity you still had is gone.
and like man i would go insane too
anyways i wrote this bc i read a good fic that inspired me so go read that i just reblogged it

ha. ha. ha. so i just read eldest WHO THE FUCK. WAS NOT GOING TO WARN ME ABOUT THESE THINGS: 1. MURTAGH BEING ERAGON'S OLDER BROTHER HELLLOO?? 2. I THOUGHT MURTAGH WAS DEAD I WAS GRIEVING YOU CANT DO THAT TO ME PAOLINI 3. ERAGON STOP MAKING MOVES ON ARYA SHE'S THREE TIMES YOUR AGE 5. eragon makeover >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 6. i wasnt planning on loving roran so much but YES STRONGHAMMER!!!!1111 (he immediately punched eragon upon seeing him) 7. im getting concerned about murtagh's situation 8. also eragon sweetheart no. being forced to be a rider under galbatorix doesnt mean betrayal 9. i still love eragon though ill be defending that boy until the day i die. if there are no more eragon lovers on earth ive been KILLED 10. the elves are so fun to read about 11. the book cover confused me at first because . . . hey, why isn't the dragon blue, isn't this saphira?? NO. IT'S THORN. IT'S MOTHERFUCKING THORN 12. please paolini don't kill off orik 13. garrow was more of a dad to eragon than morzan will ever be. 14. saphira is amazing i love her 15. its so funny when you realize eragon literally watched saphira hatch and then suddenly she's SEVERAL TIMES HIS SIZE and calls him "little one" and mothers him because selena wouldn't and also tells him 'you got to calm down little man' when eragon is trying to flirt with arya 16. speaking of that watching him try and flirt with her makes me crack up 17. but it also gives me second-hand embarrassment

Eragon at the end of the first Book(sketch)
Tumblr media
I finally found and bought the physical copy of Eldest yesterday and since I've already finished the last book of trials of apollo(which I'll also draw at some point) I'm going to start reading Eldest soon and I decided to make this sketch of how I imagine Eragon would look at the end of the first book and the beginning of the second one to help me and make it easier to imagine the scenes in the book.
I decided to put him in this more tidy outfit, because I always thought that the Varden gave Eragon the best clothes possible, since he is literally the "greatest hope" for the entire rebellion against Galbatorix so they needed this to even increase the morale of the entire group and make a kind of show off with him.

Something that I’d like to see in future book is Eragon realizing just how afraid Murtagh is of other people.
He never forgets that Morzan is Murtagh’s father, but he also knows that Murtagh is so much more than his parentage. He will do everything he can to remind Murtagh of this truth.
Eragon is also aware of how the denizens of Alagaesia feel about Murtagh and Thorn. Hostility at best, desiring to cause physical harm or death at worst.
He remembers Murtagh’s resistance towards going to the Varden, and probably expects some of that same resistance when he mentions Carvahall.
But then he realizes, it’s not just doubt or regret or belief that people will only see him as his father’s spawn, and the evil lieutenant of Galbatorix who betrayed the Varden.
No, Murtagh is afraid. Afraid of not being able to redeem himself. Afraid of being rejected. Afraid for Thorn’s safety. Possibly afraid for his life and being overpowered.
I expect this revelation to surprise Eragon in some way as it sheds more light onto his brother’s mindsets. It’s not just stubbornness or frustration at his situation or pride. No, it’s fear that keeps Murtagh from making connections.

"He found himself reliving his ambush and capture in Tronjheim. Being bound hand and foot, the Twins forcing him to ride through countless miles of dark tunnels..." (Murtagh, Ceunon: Chapter V)
I don’t post my art often, but this was a very special piece to me that I’ve been wanting to make for a while.
Murtagh’s kidnapping in Eldest has given me brainrot for the last 10 years. It is my favourite GID scene that has never been described or shown in any major capacity. The mystery of it makes it all the more interesting to me.
So I decided to draw my take on it! Where he’s betrayed by the Twins, who turn him over to the Urgals and tie him up for the long journey back to Galbatorix. I really wanted to capture his terror at the prospect of going back and be as accurate to the books’ descriptions as possible.
Also thanks to @scarletfish8eta for the amazing bruise tutorial. It really helped me up my pain-drawing game!

Ajihad: would you say that you're independent?
Eragon: *looks behind himself*
Saphira, Nasuada, Arya, Orik, Murtagh: *nod*
Eragon: yeah, I'd say so.
