Murder your Employer (The McMasters guide to homicide) by Rupert Holmes.
DELETION Our preferred term for “murder” [vulg.], although some younger staff have lately adopted “omission” as less austere. Note that while “to delete” is our verb of choice, we do not use “to omit” as an alternative.

three books i loved in october
murder your employer by rupert holmes || mystery(?), academic setting
an innovative book that presents itself as a covert textbook from a mysterious murderous academy, telling the story of three characters who go through personal journeys to off their enemies.
half sick of shadows by laura sebastian || fantasy, camelot, minor romance
a feminist retelling of the arthurian myth centering around the prophetic lady of shallott, and a powerful story about friendship and destiny.
the spare man by mary robinette kowal || mystery, sci-fi, glitz & glamour
an heiress and her new spouse are framed for murder on their honeymoon trip and must find the real killer to avoid disaster. bonus points for including a fancy cocktail recipe at the top of every chapter.

Favorite books of 2023
You seemed to like my historical m/m recommendations, so I am going to give you my favorite books of the 2023!
Doesn't mean they were published on 2023, I just read them that year.
--
The Scottish Boy - Alex de Campi Historical fiction, M/M, politics, war - Harry, a young English man participates on a raid to Scotland where they capture a wild and unrefined Scottish boy, who mysteriously can speak fluent French. Their lives are entangled forever. This I already recommended, but it bears saying it again. This is wonderful. It has enemies to lovers, star-crossed lovers, political intrigue and betrayal.
-
Legends & Lattes - Travis Baldree Fantasy, F/F, coffee shop, romance - Viv is an orc mercenary, who after a life of adventuring and battles wants to start a coffee shop, but she is battling tax office, suspicious customers and magic.
Tooth rottingly sweet. Absolutely cozy, low stakes fantasy series that makes you kick your feet and giggle.
Also read the prequel, which is also wonderful: Bookshops & Bonedust
-
This Is How You Lose The Time War - Amar El Mohtar, Max Gladstone Sci-fi, time travel, war, F/F - Agents on opposing sides of the time war leave messages to each other over time and space, falling in love with each other in the process. If Bigolas Dickolas Wolfwood did not get to you, hopefully this will. Beautiful and poetic story about love and faith and war. -
A Little Life - Hanya Yanagihara Contemporary fiction, drama, M/M - Four classmates go through life, sometimes alone, sometimes together, always concerned about Jude.
Changed me as a person. There is Elsa before A Little Life, there is Elsa after A Little Life. Hated every second of reading it. Physical discomfort. Never again. 10/10 PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF THE TRIGGER WARNINGS WITH THIS ONE. It'll kill you if you don't. TW: Mental health, suicide, suicide attempts, rape, child abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, there might be others but these just from the top of my head.
-
Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide - Rupert Holmes - Historical crime comedy - Three people want to murder their employers and they go to school for it. One of them will fail. Absolutely fun, easy read. One of those "can't put it down" type of books that will keep you entertained all the way through.
-
I think that's all for now. I'll do a part two maybe tomorrow, so I won't clog your timeline with a gigantic post. Anyway, hopefully at least one of you finds something new to read from this list!

“So if sensible people can kill themselves because life no longer seems worth living, then I suppose a sensible person might kill someone who makes other people’s lives unlivable, or who endangers the existence of others.”

2024 To Read List (plus reasons as needed):
TW for Columbine/school unaliving mention and conversion mentions (homophobia). If I've missed your trigger let me know so I can fix the tags accordingly.
All book titles connected to their respective Goodreads pages.
A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy by Sue Klebold - Reading this out of pure spite in response to an-in my opinion- unfair video about Sue. Won't link it so the guy doesn't get harassed but it made my blood boil. Side note: I have a special interest in Columbine but I in no way am interested in joining Tumblr's TCC. Eric and Dylan should not be fangirled over imho.
Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett - I like faerie books
Murder Your Employer: The McMaster's Guide of Homicide by Rupert Holmes - No particular reason; saw it at B&N and thought it seemed interesting. R.L. Stine apparently liked it so hey, why not?
We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix - I've been looking at this author for a while, and I own some of his books on audible, but I've been trying to get back into physical media
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom by Satoru Yamaguchi, illustrated by Nami Hidaka, and translated by Shirley Yeung - Whole series, but I'm on the second book. One of my all time favorite animes. Can't wait for the Switch game to come out in NA.
Fire Dancer by Catherine Jones Payne - I met this author about 2 years ago at a convention and she is awesome. I'm almost done with her Breakwater series, which I also recommend if you like mermaids.
Split Image: The Life of Anthony Perkins by Charles Winecoff - Perkins has been said to be bisexual, but based on further research I genuinely think that he might have been a homosexual. This topic surrounding him has interested me for a while. especially since I have reason to believe that this came from conversion therapy.
RWBY: After the Fall by E.C. Meyers - I love RWBY and also fanfiction reasons. I also got Before the Dawn and Roman Holiday for similar reasons.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - Okay so I read the first book around the time the first movie came out but I only watched the movies past that, and I suddenly got hooked back in by people mentioning small details that Collins wrote, as well as Panem Academy and Emhahee on tiktok

Rupert Holmes, who famously wrote and sang "Escape (The Pina Colada Song), recently published a novel about a murder school and it is honestly so delightful and fantastic. I managed to be the first with my library's copy and devoured it.

June 23, 2023:
Silly is the best word I can use. Puns, rhymes, and other wordplay pepper the dialogue, and the cheery academic tone flouts an otherwise dark subject.
Fun like a heist movie, the second half is pure payoff and it feels good
8.5/10

The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts, dedicated to the art of murder where students study how best to “delete” their most deserving victim.
Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate…and where one’s mandatory graduation thesis is getting away with the perfect murder of someone whose death will make the world a much better place to live.
Prepare for an education you’ll never forget.
I've barely started this book (again a Darling Desi suggestion) but I think it will be very interesting for sure.

Did anyone else find “Murder Your Employer: The McMaster’s Guide to Homicide” by Rupert Holmes a bit transphobic-adjacent?
I felt a little icky when I finished reading it this morning.
