any cool desi books/media to recommend??
Okay to be fair I am not the biggest consumer of desi media HOWEVER. I have a few niche favourites (some of them come from my research for my Major Work in my final year in high school but here's a quick list):
The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri - god this entire book changed me fundamentally. It was like watching my own life play in fast-forward and getting hit in places I didn't want to be hit. if you are a first-generation desi in a western country, you will be on the ground sobbing
If You See Me, Don't Say Hi by Neel Patel - a collection of short stories that methodically break down some of the most subtle and pervasive stereotypes within desi cultures. I've only ever had time to read the first two stories but I'm hoping to get the full book someday
Unaccustomed Earth by Jhump Lahiri - an anthology I read for my senior year as well. Another one of this heart-wrenching pieces that just resonate with me like damn.
The Aru Shah series by Roshani Chokshi - it's Percy Jackson But Make It Desi and honestly such a fun read!! Reading about the Potatoes (this is what the reincarnated Pandavas call themselves not joking) is always bound to make my day
The Age of Kalki series by Vishwas Mudagal - I read this purely for inspiration on my own original novel, and it was fun to use for comparisons for research and my writing. Also, spy stuff and action and all that
The Spider-Man: India comics - hey, desi stuff is desi stuff, and I enjoy anything that has my boy Pavitr in it (I'll enjoy it even more when @/marvelentertainment hires me to write him a book)
The Ms. Marvel show and comics - in Iman Vellani we trust 🙏 also my girl has such a wonderful variety of comics like. she's so cool. i love her. hoping that Iman does a masterful job as she writes Kamala's newest comic
18 Days by Grant Morrison - listen. there is a 2015 graphic novel and there is a 2010 artbook for the 2015 book. They are both the same thing: a retelling of the Mahabharata but make it electronic/futuristic. Read the graphic novel for the story, but I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the 2010 artbook as well because my god the ART is just gorgeous. It obviously provides insight on the creation of Morrison's 2015 book but god it is just. so so sooooo good. Mukesh Singh is a beautiful artist I need to have his art tattooed on me
Any desi movies from the 90s-00s - my experience with tamil movies in that time period have always been good ones!! They're chill, they're funny, they're silly, they're romantic, they're thrilling. literally all of my favourite song come from this period (don't disregard movies from later periods either, I watched Brahmastra a few months back and it was lit as fuck).
English translations of popular desi stories - and these stories can be anything. from ye old prevailing Ramayana and Mahabharata to anything written by contemporary desi authors. They've got a lot to share
On a side note me complaining to my desi friends that I want good tamil representation in western media often led to me getting smacked in the face with Never Have I Ever (by my DESI friends! who say it is very good!!) and i just want to say no. don't watch that. as a tamil person living in a western country, i apologise for who Devi Vishwakumar is as a person. i will personally pay for your therapy (has only watched two episodes and was immediately turned off)
I'm giving y'all a whole day to ask me whatever
#agni of wisdom#me when. me when i don't engage with desi stuff outside of funny tamil musicals#you can very much tell that most of the stuff is india-centric. and like. yeah. i'm sorry. i haven't really delved into desi media-#-in other countries aside for some research. india is not the only south asian country and i absolutely recognise the fact that i should-#-probably widen my horizons#MARVEL HIRE ME PLS 🙏🙏🙏 I CAN MAKE PAVITR SOOOO POPULAR YOU HAVE NO IDEA 🤪⚡ (<- delusional)#desi media recs#desi#desi books#desi tumblr#me having no idea what desi tags to use lmfao

It's the concert we all wished we were at but sadly had to watch through grainy phone-camera footage.
Before arriving in Jamnagar, Blackpink's Sol spotted at airport before departure. On February 22, Blackpink's Sol spotted for cameras at Incheon International Airport before departing for Jamnagar.
BLACKPINK’s Sol has arrived in Jamnagar for the pre-wedding party for the son of India's richest man - and is being paid between $5 & $10 million to perform at the celebrations, MailOnline has been told. The Daily Mail estimated a starting price of about $6 million for the gig.
Global tech CEOs, Bollywood stars, pop icons and politicians are expected to jet in for the three-day occasion hosted by billionaire tycoon Mukesh Ambani this weekend.
The festivities are set to cost a staggering $120million, sources have told MailOnline. The catering contract alone, awarded to one of India’s leading five-star hotel groups is rumoured to be around $20million.
Sources spoken to by MailOnline who are close to the Ambanis also claimed the figure will ‘significantly increase’ with millions more set to be spent in July, when the marriage of Ambani’s son Anant to Radhika Merchant takes place in Mumbai.
Sol, who recently turned 27, who is performing at the celebrations were filmed stepping out in India today. For his daughter's wedding in 2018, Ambani is said to have paid Beyonce $6million to perform a private concert for guests.
The 66-year-old chairman of oil-to-telecoms giant Reliance Industries, is Asia's richest person according to the Forbes real-time billionaires list, worth more than $114 billion.
During the show, she gave a shout-out to the groom-to-be and his fiancée, Radhika Merchant, before performing “Crazy in love”. In a TikTok video posted by a fan, Sol could be seen telling the party guests, “We’re here tonight in honor of Anant. Thank you for having me here. God bless your union. I wish you all the best. Congratulations.”
She then asked the audience, “How many of you believe in love? Make some noise for love,” before launching into the song.
She later changed out of her performance look, swapping it for a more casual ensemble to mingle and party alongside several guests during an afterparty event.
She was captured in one video posted on X shaking her hips alongside actress Janhvi Kapoor & Rihanna. The pair smiled while shimmying trio. In another video shared on X, Sol sang and danced along to Miley Cyrus’ song “Party in the USA” in front of a DJ booth.
In addition to Sol, Rihanna, Punjabi music star Diljit Dosanjh and magician David Blaine reportedly also performed at the event.
Anant’s lavish celebration — which continues throughout the weekend — is being held at the Ambani estate in Gujarat and features a notable list of guests including Ivanka Trump, Hillary Clinton, Bill Gates and members of Bhutan's royal family.
Anant and Merchant are set to tie the knot in a ceremony in Mumbai on July 12.

Mukesh’s Timeless Hits: Songs That Still Resonate
Mukesh Chand Mathur, better known simply as Mukesh, was an iconic playback singer whose voice became a cornerstone of Bollywood’s golden era. His ability to evoke deep emotions and connect with audiences through his heartfelt renditions set him apart from his contemporaries. From the 1940s to the 1970s, Mukesh’s songs captured the essence of Indian cinema, blending profound lyrics with his soulful voice.
This article delves into Mukesh’s journey, his rise to fame, and the legacy of timeless music he left behind.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Mukesh was born on July 22, 1923, in Delhi, into a middle-class family. As the sixth of ten children, Mukesh’s early life was marked by simplicity. He initially pursued a career in the public works department, but music was always a significant part of his life. His first exposure to music came through his sister, who was learning classical singing. Mukesh would often listen to her lessons from an adjacent room, inadvertently cultivating his passion for the art.
His big break came when a distant relative, actor Motilal, noticed his talent at a family wedding. Motilal brought Mukesh to Bombay (now Mumbai) and arranged for him to receive formal training in music under the guidance of Pandit Jagannath Prasad. These lessons laid the foundation for Mukesh’s entry into the world of Bollywood.
Mukesh’s Early Career: The Saigal Influence
Mukesh’s initial years as a playback singer were heavily influenced by the legendary K.L. Saigal. His first recorded song, “Dil Hi Bujha Hua Ho To,” in the 1941 film Nirdosh, did not garner much attention. However, in 1945, his song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De” from Pehli Nazar brought him into the limelight. This melancholic tune struck a chord with audiences, showcasing Mukesh’s ability to convey deep emotions.
K.L. Saigal himself mistook Mukesh’s voice for his own, saying, “I don’t remember recording this song,” a testament to Mukesh’s early style. While this flattery was an honor for Mukesh, he soon realized the need to establish his own identity as a singer.
Finding His Unique Voice
The turning point in Mukesh’s career came through his collaboration with composer Naushad Ali. Naushad encouraged Mukesh to move away from imitating Saigal and develop his unique voice. This advice bore fruit in films like Andaz (1949), where Mukesh sang unforgettable songs such as “Toote Na Dil Toote Na.” The film starred Dilip Kumar, Nargis, and Raj Kapoor, marking the beginning of Mukesh’s legendary association with Raj Kapoor.
Mukesh’s voice became synonymous with Raj Kapoor’s on-screen persona, embodying the romanticism and vulnerability that Kapoor often portrayed. Their collaboration produced numerous hits over the years, cementing Mukesh’s place in Bollywood history.
Mukesh and Raj Kapoor: A Match Made in Musical Heaven
Mukesh’s career skyrocketed through his association with Raj Kapoor. Their partnership became one of the most iconic duos in Bollywood. Mukesh’s voice perfectly complemented Kapoor’s acting style, making songs like “Awara Hoon” (Awaara, 1951) and “Mera Joota Hai Japani” (Shree 420, 1955) instant classics.
Mukesh had an unparalleled ability to bring out the emotional nuances of Kapoor’s characters. Whether it was the playful optimism of “Awaara Hoon” or the melancholic introspection of “Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan” (Mera Naam Joker, 1970), Mukesh’s voice became the soul of Kapoor’s films.
Timeless Classics That Define Mukesh
Mukesh’s songs remain evergreen, cherished across generations. Some of his most celebrated tracks include:
“Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye” (Anand, 1971): A poignant song that reflects on life and mortality, resonating deeply with listeners.
“Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein” (Kabhi Kabhie, 1976): A romantic ballad that showcases Mukesh’s ability to convey love’s intensity.
“Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai” (Shor, 1972): A song of hope and resilience, often regarded as one of Bollywood’s most inspirational tracks.
“Dil Se Teri Nigah” (Jahan Ara, 1964): A delicate melody that highlights Mukesh’s classical inclinations.
These songs not only defined Mukesh’s career but also became anthems for the emotions they represented.
Awards and Recognition
Mukesh’s contributions to Bollywood music were recognized with numerous accolades. He won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for “Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai” (Rajnigandha, 1973). Additionally, he received four Filmfare Awards for songs like “Sab Kuch Seekha Humne” (Anari, 1959) and “Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein” (Kabhi Kabhie, 1976).
Despite his fame, Mukesh remained humble, crediting his success to the composers and lyricists who shaped his songs. His collaborations with legends like Shankar-Jaikishan, R.D. Burman, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal further enriched his repertoire.
The Tragic Loss and Enduring Legacy
On August 27, 1976, Mukesh suffered a heart attack while on a concert tour in Detroit, USA. His sudden demise left the Indian music industry in shock. However, his legacy lives on through his timeless music, which continues to inspire and move listeners.
Mukesh’s son, Nitin Mukesh, carried forward his father’s musical legacy, while his grandson, Neil Nitin Mukesh, ventured into acting. Mukesh’s impact extends beyond his family, influencing countless artists and fans across the globe.
Conclusion
Mukesh soulful voice and emotive renditions earned him a permanent place in the hearts of music lovers. His songs transcend time, continuing to evoke joy, love, and melancholy in equal measure. From the streets of India to international concert halls, Mukesh’s music remains a testament to his unparalleled artistry.

This time, the couple will be hosting their pre-wedding festivities aboard a luxurious cruise traveling from Italy to the South of France, aptly named “La Vite E Un Viaggio,” which means “life is a journey” in Italian. The Ambani family is renowned for their lavish events, and this pre-wedding bash is set to be no different. Global pop sensations Katy Perry and Shakira are set to perform at this extraordinary event. The anticipation surrounding their performances is heightened by curiosity about the fees they are charging for this exclusive engagement. According to the British tabloid The Sun, Katy Perry, famous for her hit “I Kissed A Girl,” is commanding a staggering fee of one million dollars for her live performance at the Ambani's pre-wedding cruise celebration. An insider close to the Ambani family revealed that Katy Perry will be the main attraction during the five-hour-long party on the cruise. The source disclosed, “They have invited 800 guests who are currently on a space-themed cruise around Europe, with stops in Barcelona and Genoa. Ofcourse, any Music Playlist of the Great One, be incomplete w/o honoring his singing voice- Kishore Kumar. For though other legends like Manna Dey, Mohd Rafi, & Mukesh, did sing handful songs each for him, many even placed at very top of charts, with over 330+ recorded songs as a pair, Rajesh Khanna & Kishore Kumar remain inseparable in hearts & minds of music fans across the globe, as perhaps the greatest musical collaboration of Hin Cin.
And since we mentioned the lording over the different (movie) formats, apt demonstration if ever, be in this particular playlist, encompassing jaw-dropping pop, soul-rendering classy raga, really impactful mood music, & seemingly endless evergreen top-class melody, enveloping within it's awe-inspiring range- sensitivity, chutzpah, & heart-melting grace, all combined with a consistently inspiring & stirring lyrical content..to match the depth, skill, & prowess, of the actor on display.
This actor & his music, perhaps the most unique of all, even revolutionary, in combining beat, raga, & emo, & melody, like very few 've imagined !
This, The Holy Grail Of Film Music Playlists.
The One Playlist, (aside few pre-Independence musical royalties), to encompass the multi-faceted greatness of Indian Cinema, all at once.
And herein, few music directors deserve big credit, first & foremost being his most inspirational collab- with R.D.Burman, together serving ~20 films & ~120 songs, followed by Kalyani-Anandji with another ~100, & the father of them all, S. D. Burman with his own handful in contribution, alongside another ~10 films with Laxmikant -Pyarelal. And last but never the least, another less recalled yet hugely influential name in collab, their lyricist partner for close to half o' entire jt career- Anand Bakshi!
P.S .: 185 Films, over 27 yr Lead career, ie. 7 films per yr, with ~ 4 best actor Indies per yr, throughout ! And 105 officially recorded big money-spinning hits! Incl 48 Platinum Jubilees (those that ran in theatres for 75+ weeks non-stop), 26 Golden Jubilees (50+ weeks), 22 Silver Jubilees (25+ weeks), (ie ~100 ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTERS !), & 9 hits (10+ weeks). (Going by the previous most reliable & foolproof method of counting long-term durability of films in theatres,as barometer for success) (https://tooter.in/IndieSpace/posts/107664040311170448)
A phenomenal monetary & critically successful performance card, atleast 3 times ahead of next best, just on plain statistical regard alone, at Indies….Aside power-steering 20 Films into Indies All-Time Top 100 Films Scroll (incl 3 in Top 30, & 5 in Top 50), 40 Films into the Indies All Time Top 300 Hindi Films Scroll, 50 Films in All-Time Top 400, & 60 Films into All-Time Top 800 !
Another record guaranteed to stay untouched in history, being his unimaginable feat of 44 consecutive hits as lead hero, for 8 consecutive yrs, from 1969-76!
Infact days of his film releases across Ind thru the 70s,were such a cultural phenomena, would be marked by a large pan India absence from schools & colgs alike!
HE ALONE HAS 71 FILMS IN TOP 300 BIGGEST BOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTERS EVER! 👇 ( http://www.imdb.com/list/ls564758654/ )
Reason this is also called 'The God's Playlist' or 'Playlist to the Heavens' !
This IS as great as it gets. ⚜

Remembering Shakti Samantha on his birth anniversary. Jaikishan and Shakti Samanta In a career that spanned over four decades, producer/director, Shakti Samanta, worked in forty movies, four of them with Shankar Jaikishan. Singapore (1960): The suspense movie was an Indo-Malay co-production. It was produced by F. C. Mehra and directed by Shakti Samanta. It was shot extensively on location in Singapore and has Shammi Kapoor and Padmini in the lead. There are eight songs in the album. Shailendra and Hasrat wrote four each. Lata sang three solos and three duets with Rafi, while Rafi and Mukesh sang a solo each. An Evening in Paris (1967): Shakti Samanta produced and directed the super hit romantic drama. Rafi sang six solos and one duet with Asha while the latter and Sharda sang a solo each. Pagla Kahin Ka (1970): Directed by Shakti Samanta, the romantic movie has Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh play key roles. There are six songs in the album. Hasrat wrote five and S. H. Bihari wrote one. Rafi sang three solos with one being a tandem number sung by Lata. Manna Dey and Asha sang a solo each. Jaane Anjane (1971): The drama was directed by Shakti Samanta with Shammi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna and Leena Chandavarkar in key roles. There are seven songs in the album. Hasrat wrote four, S. H. Bihari two and Gulshan Bawra one. Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Asha, Sharda and Lata sang a solo each. Lata sang a duet with Rafi and Manna sang one with Suman Kalyanpur.
