Mudhoney “Digital Garbage” 2018. Sub Pop Records. Grungy, scuzzy noise punk from alt-giants Mudhoney; Digital Garbage is the band’s 9th full-length release and they are f**king pissed. God knows there’s a lot to be angry about in 2018: they’re pissed at right-wing news and its consumers (“Paranoid Core” with the lyrics “Invest in gold, squirrel away food, stockpile guns, hoard your fuel!”), at chronic mass shootings AND blind evengalicalism (“Please Mr. Gunman” - one of my top tracks, it has that infectious groove that made Mudhoney stand apart from the grungy pack) and at toxic social media fame-seeking (the sarcastic “Kill Yourself Live” - there’s some excellent psychedelic organ on this one). And that’s just Side A. Side B has a few songs railing against the rise (again) of conservative religion and the accumulation of wealth by the few in the US: it starts off with the funky-ish “21st Century Pharisees” that launches with the sneering lyrics “Evangelical hypocrites laying hands on a pile of shit!”  “Prosperity Gospel” and “Next Mass Extinction” rail against rampant and destructive capitalism that is destroying the planet and on “Messiah’s Lament” “Arm gets to play the role of Jesus Christ, frowning upon the money-grubbing conservatives who like to thump the bible but seemingly pay no mind to the charity preached within.” (Pitchfork) It’s almost exhausting to listen to this much negativity but fortunately Mudhoney, 30 years on, still have all of the rocking force, headbangability and moshpit fury that made them [almost] famous in the grunge years.
Spin’s review of Digital Garbage says, “Rock bands who express left-leaning politics in their songs are often described as preaching to the converted. But [Mark] Arm writes like he’s condescending to the opposition, as if he’d want nothing more than to sing these antagonistic lyrics directly to the “evangelical hypocrites” who’d be most offended by them. While many of these lyrics could have been written in Mudhoney’s early years, when Reagan and Bush Sr. were in office and televangelists like Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart were exposed as frauds, Arm’s anger sounds renewed now by presidency of Donald Trump, whom white evangelicals have stood by like no other demographic...If the lyrics are getting all the attention on Digital Garbage, it’s only because the music is exactly what you’d expect. Mudhoney’s sound hasn’t changed much since the early ‘90s, when they broadened their palette of scuzzy Stooges homages with Arm’s whirring garage rock organ, which livens up “Kill Yourself Live,” and guitarist Steve Turner’s harmonica, which makes an appearance on “Next Mass Extinction.” The band’s talent and chemistry is well preserved, with drummer Dan Peters’s incredible sense of swing and Turner’s bluesy solos both on display to great effect on “Messiah’s Lament.” There just isn’t much in the way of surprises, save for the slow, spacey “Night and Fog,” which rides a menacing groove laid down by bassist Guy Maddison, who joined the band in 2001 when founding member Matt Lukin retired from music (he’s reportedly now working as a carpenter).”

Record of the Day - Mudhoney - 'Kill Yourself Live' (2018)
Record of the Day – Mudhoney – ‘Kill Yourself Live’ (2018)
Grunge icons Mudhoney are back with a brand new album Digital Garbage. It’s due for release on September 28th and they’ve just put out a teaser for it in the shape of the oxymoronically titled new single, Kill Yourself Live. Harking back to their 1991 LP, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, they bolster the song’s fizzy riff with some nice bottle-slide guitar and drag the old Hammond organ from that…

Mudhoney- MORNING IN AMERICA (SUB POP)
Tumblr media
For me there’s something very comforting to know that this Seattle institution is still around. For 31 years they’ve been delivering the goods and this time around it’s a 7-song EP, and most of the songs were outtakes to 2018’s terrific Digital Garbage. That record was one of their most overly political of their career and on this one they’re not backtracking at all on their views on the current administration. First cut “Vortex of Lies” is a slow burner that opens with the line “I can see what they’re trying to do, I can see who they’re gonna screw” while the speedier “Creeps Are Everywhere” just tells it like it is over a great tune of mangled guitars and a punishing bass and drums (these guys have never been ones to sugarcoat anything) and “Let’s Kill Yourself Live Again” is an updated version of “Kill Yourself Live” which is even more wild ‘n wooly. They also cover an old Leather Nun tune “Ensam I Natt” and bring the English language version of it (so that’s what the words are!). I think I like Mudhoney in these smaller does and to be clear Morning in America is as relevant and kicking as anything this band has ever done. Even as they’ve all hit middle age, they’re not kindler and gentler, more like meaner and angrier (but still nice guys). www.subpop.com

Doomed Discoveries:
Vintage Eyehategod Doc Filled with Surprises
~By Billy Goate~
What were you doing in 1993?   I was a teenager living in a stifling fundamentalist Northwest home where rock was forbidden, trying to come to terms with some incredible developments in heavy music.   Just up the I-5 aways, there was an oasis of chaos and I longed to be right in the heart of the cesspool, where Melvins, Soundgarden, TAD, Mudhoney, and Nirvana were busy infecting mainstream culture.   We'd just moved to Oregon from a little one-horse town in East Texas known as Wills Point, nestled in between Dallas and Tyler.   Little did I know (and later would come to regret) that I was so very close to another mind-blowing music scene that would have sent my parents into hysterics.
Recently, TAPE JUNKIE posted this short documentary about EYEHATEGOD.   It was filmed circa 1992-93 with Mike, Joey, Mark, and Jimmy, just as the NOLA sludge machine was hitting its stride: five years as a band and a record deal in hand.   The well-worn and color-washed VHS copy of Peace Through Addiction (the de facto motto of the band) opens with stairwell recitation of The Lord's Prayer (emphasis on "Lead us NOT into temptation!").   Cue heavy riffs and title cards.   Easter Eggs ahead!   Somewhere around minute seven, the tape cuts out.   I suspect there is more (no doubt someone in our readership has the complete copy).   I was able to, nonetheless, salvage some interesting quotes.
Tumblr media
On the band's history: "Jimmy is the only original member left in the band from when Eyehategod first spawned," guitarist Mark Schulz tells the interviewer. "I've been in bands for about 10 years," singer Mike Williams relates. "First band I was in was called Teenage Waste -- I was like 14 -- then Suffocation by Filth. Eyehategod's the best one, though, because it's about more of what I want to do."
On their name: "It's not about religion at all, it's all addiction. It's all about individualism. Not having to depend on nobody but yourself."
On their sound: "We're not concerned what other people think of our music,” says drummer Joey LaCaze. "We're satisfied with what we do." Jimmy Bower chimes in: "It wasn't taken seriously to begin with, it was just an outlet for the band to have fun and get loaded and just jam." Mike IX is brutally honest: "I don't want to sing. I can't sing. I'm just venting my frustrations, really."
On their songs: "The lyrics are just kind of abstract. Things I think about all the time," Mike reveals. "Just things I write off the top of my head, you know? Writers I like: Charles Bukowski, William Burroughs. That's what mainly influences the lyrics, because I read a lot, believe it or not. Charles Bukowski, man, is like the best, to me, because he's a total alcoholic and I can relate to that," he adds with a laugh and knowing smile. "I'd rather not quit drinking because I enjoy it. It numbs me, you know? It puts me in a state of mind. That's what I like about it."
On their first and second albums: "The new stuff we're writing just sounds so much more real. The album we put out sounds good and everything, it's got good songs," Mark says (speaking of the just released debut, 'In The Name of Suffering'), "but the stuff we're writing right now is so much smoother. There's just so much more feel in it." Shortly after the release of this doc, EHG would release, 'Take As Needed For Pain' (2013) with some of the most iconic songs in their discography.
youtube
On the scene: "Down here in New Orleans everything is centered around drinking and getting fucked up."
On success: "People are into making their lives successful and everything," Jimmy reflects. "We've just fucking realized the fact that we're all losers, man." Later, he adds: "We were just like, 'Let's start a band that doesn't give a fuck about nothing, man, and not even take it seriously.'"
On life and death: "The way I look at it, it's slow suicide, you know?" Mike offers in a ponderous moment. "I couldn't kill myself with a gun or nothing. I'd rather just drink myself to death."
On kinship: "None of us have anything, man, so our friends are like our most important thing, you know?"
On their message: "It's about waking up people. Making people realize the violence, you know? People live so sheltered lives they don't realize what's going on." It doesn't take long for clarity to take hold: "We promote drug usage, just free will for everybody. If you want to use drugs, you're an addict, we're not bothered by it. We've got our own lives to lead and we're not concerned about anybody else."
