FLASH REPORT: American YouTuber 'IShowSpeed' arrives in the Philippines, causes Fan Frenzy for meet-and-greet in BGC [#TeleRadyoSerbisyoEXCLUSIVE]
(Written by Rhayniel Saldasal Calimpong / Freelanced News Writer, Online Media Reporter and News Presenter of OneNETnews)
TAGUIG, NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION -- The American variety and veteran YouTube sensation 'Mr. Darren Jason Watkins Jr.', finally set foot in the country today, part of his highly anticipated Southeast Asia tour. This arrival of the 19 y/o Ohio state native, straight from the United States of America (U.S.A.), created frenzy among his Filipino fanbase, which led to huge masses of crowds and traffic jams across Metro Manila.
Indeed, his Philippine adventure started off with a bang. He played at a local basketball court in 'Brgy. 39, Zone 3, District 1' in 'Tondo, Metro Manila, National Capital Region'. The place was thronged with fans as the eagerness got the better of everyone to get a glimpse of the male YouTube star. It set the tone for a day that became truly frenzy-filled and filled with fervor.
Before going to the heart of the city, IShowSpeed made a quick detour to a local Chowking branch on Bustos Street, Sta. Cruz, this said city and province. The fast-food stop served as an emergency impromptu meet-and-greet location, where he was sat and hydrate himself in plain cold water, as eager fans were gathered outside to catch a glimpse of their online male YouTuber idol. He followed up his interest in Filipino culture by riding on top of a Kalesa, a horse-drawn transportation contraption, waving a Philippine flag to the delight of all that watched, helping spur his growing entourage on in excitement.
The joyride to BGC turned out to be a spectacle in its own right, as the male YouTube star replaced Kalesa with a motorbike, knowingly called as 'habal-habal'. The ride through busy Manila attracted even more attention; traffic came to a halt with fans trying to stay alongside their idol.
The chaotic night concluded before 7:30pm at 5th Avenue, BGC, in a Mercedes-Benz showroom, where IShowSpeed found refuge amidst a sea of people. Outside the unforgettable local dealership at Cats Motors Incorporated (CMI), chaos was at nothing less than pandemonium. If this day wasn't exciting enough, IShowSpeed teasingly posted to the internet media, including 'TeleRadyo Serbisyo: Dumaguete' and 'OneNETnews' that he would be meeting the Boxing legend and former senator "Manny Dapidran 'PacMan' Pacquiao", scheduled for tomorrow on Thursday (September 12th, 2024 -- Manila local time) when social media would once again go ablaze in the star-studded encounter.
In LIVE chats throughout the night, rumors are rife that the IShowSpeed Philippine Tour may well extend to the Visayas region on Day 2, including Cebu, Bacolod, Dumaguete and Siquijor. For now, unfortunately much however, Mindanao appears to be out of its itinerary.
IShowSpeed's arrival most certainly has left an indelible mark within the Philippines, and his livestream drew in more than 300,000 viewers from around the world, over half from the Philippines with 56% online audience share in this video sharing platform. And as this male YouTube star still goes on a rampage in this South East Asian adventure, one thing is for sure: IShowSpeed fever has finally swept the nation of the Philippines, and it isn't going away anytime soon.
This ongoing tour to South East Asia would be continued across the continent, first stopping in Thailand and later adding probably with the likes of Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia -- all for this month of September 2024.

BURIED GOLD: Oh, Feliciano (Jocson)
Back when I was researching for ☆ LOST & FOUND ☆ while agonizingly restricted to the frustratingly insufficient internet, the most I could find that vouched for Feliciano Jocson as the true designer of the PH flag as we know it today were from two memoirs, neither of them available online. Now that I have legitimate library access once more, I managed to dig those very memoirs up, and the concerned sections.
CW: war, death, violence
☼ ☼ ☼
Testimony #1: Julio Nakpil
He was commissioned by Andres Bonifacio to compose a national hymn for the Revolutionary Government. Too bad the version we got now was by the other camp. (Speaking of Bonifacio, his widow — Gregoria de Jesus — would go on to marry Nakpil).
All Nakpil had to say was a highly frank and overly simplistic sentence at the bottom of the page I shared below. While the RRL section of the thesis grind was always the hardest part, this was precisely why your teachers taught you all never to rest on one source. This was a bane for historians that wanted the tsi— I mean, details.
☼ ☼ ☼
Testimony #2: Artemio Ricarte
A member of the Katipunan who rose the ranks and later took part with the Philippine Army against the invading Americans. "Vibora" (viper) was a nickname he earned.
This first section to be shared was, more or less, an account of events in defense of Jocson, that matched up to that of Nakpil's above.
Translation:
e — Mr. Feliciano Jocson’s noncompliance to the peace [pact]; His rebellion, capture and disappearance — On the day of General G. Mascardo’s arrival in Biyak-na-Bato, Mr. Feliciano Jocson was also present and expressed his utmost disapproval to the pact, not to reject peace itself, but because of his exclusion by the ingenuine Mr. Aguinaldo, regarding the talks held, resulting in a signing of policies and ultimately the acceptance of peace. In reaction to his stubborn defiance, Mr. Aguinaldo no longer wished to invite him to their travel to Hongkong. At this point, Mr. Aguinaldo had barely left en route for Hongkong, when Jocson, upon returning to his station in Pugad-baboy, part of Caloocan, Manila, had begun to recruit people, in order to continue the Revolution that he was to preside over, and because he used the name of Mr. Andres Bonifacio, he attracted both members and non-members of the Katipunan. And as Jocson forged the signature and seal of President Emilio Aguinaldo onto letters, he was able to grasp control over many rebel leaders, in particular those based around Manila, among them Col. Modesto Ritual who was elected General by Mr. Jocson and the Lt. Col. Mr. Nicomedes Carreon, the younger brother of Mr. Francisco Carreon. Both men were killed in Matikiw, within Pangil, Laguna de Bay, under the directions of the Secretaries-General named Enrique and Leon. In early March 1898, Jocson had hoped to make a surprise attack on the city of Manila, had the men he gathered at Camba Street, Binundok (Manila) not been ambushed. Those very men were bombarded by the Spanish soldiers, using only meager artillery. Few had been captured because of the ones who were not suddenly killed, were finished off with heavy hits from the butts of rifles and kicks. Such an atrocity that was enacted by the Spanish at Camba Street, was also carried out in the towns of Kandong, Ilocos Sur, and San Nikolas, Cebu, because the locals had also revolted at the beginning of the year 1898, all of them being enthralled by Jocson’s passionate speeches. This was the accusation set forth by Aguinaldo’s affiliates within the Spanish government of friarism or paid by the friars, for the actions of Jocson were sincere in their intent of disrupting the pact in Biyak-na-Bato. Because of Jocson's failed attempt on the city of Manila, he rode off, alongside some companions, on the steamer Laguna, disembarked on the town of Laguna de Bay and there was arrested by the men of Katipunan leader Mr. Venancio Cueto, who the day before had received an order from Gen. Pio del Pilar instructing for the capture of Jocson and his associates, because they [Jocson and his men] were ordered by the friars, to continue the Rebellion, and included descriptions of noteworthy facial features of Jocson, for immediate identification. Mr. Jocson and his companions were locked up by Cueto like prisoners in his own house... [illustration] Caption: The 2nd Flag of the Philippines And in my dying breath Will I feel more alive But after Jocson’s interview with Mr. Apolinario Mabini, the Sublime Paralytic, who happened to be hiding in Cueto’s home, Jocson’s men were scrutinized until they were allowed to live like free guests inside [Cueto’s] house. Once Mr. Pio del Pilar learned of Jocson’s capture, he traveled to Laguna de Bay alongside his beautiful sweetheart named Mónica, and, under an oath that took place in front of Mr. Paciano Rizal, that he (del Pilar) would not give away Jocson to the Spanish authorities, and that and that he would bear no guilt, in word and in deed in the presence of anyone - that [Venancio] Cueto finally released his captor, Jocson. Without a doubt, General Pio del Pilar abided by these conditions, and thus he alone should be solely held responsible to answer for the unfathomable loss of this fierce patriot who established the departmental government of the seven provinces of Luzon, became its Secretary of the Interior, and who created (p. 73, part C) the tricolor flag, with its sun and three stars, that watches over all of us here.
I think I went too hard on translating the caption beneath the illustration.
The citation in parentheses was from an earlier section of the book, which actually gave relatively more detail on the occasion of seeing the flag design itself. In my opinion, this was much more satisfactory than Nakpil's efforts.
Translation:
When the government of the Philippine Republic settled in Maragundong [Maragondon, Cavite], Mr. Feliciano Jocson arrived, and from the plaza up to the convent, gave out a loud cry: “Long Live the Freedom of the Philippines!” And to kindle the hearts of the people, announced, among other things, that the arms he purchased from Hong Kong were due to arrive, and with only a little more fortitude in the battlefields will our victory be absolutely certain. Per Mr. Jocson’s request, he was granted permission by Mr. Emilio Aguinaldio to establish a government within the island of Luzon, to be named “Departmental Government of the Seven Provinces of Central Luzon.” Mr. Feliciano Jocson, alongside Mr. Teodoro Gonzalez, was met by [Artemio Ricarte] Vibora at Mainam ó Kaytitingga, Alfonso [Cavite], and in the conversation between Vibora and Jocson, he proposed an insignia in the legitimate establishment of the Departmental Government, and he proceeded to reveal to Vibora a single image of a tricolor flag with a sun and three stars. The provinces that comprised the aforementioned government were the following: Tayabas [Quezon], Laguna de Bay, Morong [Rizal], Manila, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, and Bataan.
☼ ☼ ☼
Serving a last round of tea, both to give the bitter but necessary closure for Jocson, as well as a correction to a suggestion I made in my previous footnotes.
It was a certain Pio del Pilar who went after Jocson. He was not related in any way to the Gregorio ("Goyo") del Pilar, because Pio deliberately chose a different surname from what he was born under to protect his family. In retrospect, it proved to be a poor choice when it came to preserving one's reputation.
(Picking a colorized edit because it was the nicest-quality photo I found)
I cropped out two paragraphs — indicated by ellipses — and their corresponding footnotes (the only ones in this section) as they seemed irrelevant.
Admittedly, what left me more shaken was not the recurring (but unsurprising) behavioral pattern of backstabbing between camps, but the mode of discarding captives and the subsequent discovery of their bodies.
Such acts had an extra sting to them when they remained prevalent in the present day.

Republic vs. Iyoy
G.R. No. 152577
Sep 21, 2005
Facts:
The case involves the Republic of the Philippines (petitioner) and Crasus L. Iyoy (respondent).
Crasus filed a Complaint for declaration of nullity of marriage against his wife, Fely Ada Rosal-Iyoy, on March 25, 1997, in the Regional Trial Court (RTC) of Cebu City, Branch 22.
Crasus and Fely were married on December 16, 1961, and had five children.
Crasus described Fely as "hot-tempered, a nagger, and extravagant."
Fely left for the United States in 1984, abandoning their children, the youngest being six years old.
Crasus received a letter from Fely asking him to sign divorce papers, which he ignored.
By 1985, Crasus learned that Fely had remarried an American and had a child with him.
Fely returned to the Philippines several times, using her new husband's surname and presenting herself as "Mrs. Fely Ada Micklus."
Crasus claimed Fely's actions indicated psychological incapacity to fulfill marital obligations, constituting grounds for nullity under Article 36 of the Family Code.
Fely countered the Complaint on June 5, 1997, asserting her American citizenship since 1988 and her legal marriage to Stephen Micklus.
Fely denied Crasus's allegations, claiming her departure was due to financial necessity and that she supported their children.
The RTC ruled in favor of Crasus on October 30, 1998, declaring the marriage null and void.
The Republic, represented by the Office of the Solicitor General, appealed to the Court of Appeals, which affirmed the RTC's ruling on July 30, 2001.
The Republic then filed a Petition for Review on Certiorari with the Supreme Court.
Issue:
Whether or not Article 26 of the Family Code of the Philippines was applicable to the case.
Ruling:
The Supreme Court ruled that the evidence was insufficient to support the finding of Fely's psychological incapacity, reversing the RTC's and Court of Appeals' decisions.
The Court held that Article 26, paragraph 2 of the Family Code was not applicable since Fely was still a Filipino citizen when she obtained her divorce.
The Supreme Court emphasized that the burden of proof lies with the party seeking the declaration of nullity, and any doubt should favor the validity of the marriage.

Richness and Beauty; A glimpse of Reality
by: Kimberly Palenzuela
Riding beyond the waves of the blue crystal waters filled with the abundance of the sea, dotted islets and magnificent rock formations, the scorching sun and the humid air welcome the person as they set foot on the island of Masbate.
Geographically located in the heart of the Philippines, this gun-shaped island is famed for being the Rodeo Capital of the country. But there's way more than meets the eye. It was composed of three Major Island Masbate, Ticao and Burias. Each has unique features and attractions, rich in history and natural wonders.
The majority of the population of Masbate lives on the coastline, which makes it a large fishing province. All 270 Barangays are located on 968 Kilometers of natural coastline. The rolling hills, virgin islands and white sand beaches are a gem to seek.
Looking at the progress it is experiencing these past few years, the thriving tourism industry overcoming its reputation as one of the most dangerous provinces to visit is a good sign for the future. The fishing industry thrives with various sea species; these top commodities are Squid, Threadfin, Shrimp, Mangrove crab, Scallop Shell, Sillago, Grouper, Milkfish, Sardines, Belt Fish and Blue Swimming Crab. This is exported to major cities like Manila and Cebu.
How can one imagine managing such islands filled with beauty and riches? What does it take to fulfill the needs and reach the full potential of sustainability and abundance? Or does it still face a challenge yet to be overcome? Let's start in the coastal municipality of Milagros.
Traveling by land, welcomed by the green pasture areas and arable lands. Milagros is a first-class municipality of the 2nd district of Masbate. Aside from the "carmelado" from cow/carabao's milk, it is also known for the bounty of seafood it produces. Located within the Asid Gulf facing the Visayan seas, no wonder people's main source of income is fishing.
Because of the location, the gulf is vulnerable to frequent Red tide due to a lot of water intrusion to the inflow and outflow passage. There's remaining eroded surface subsoil during heavy rains and flooding, and even during summertime. That's why the problem stems from the highlands. Red tide is highly likely to trigger dinoflagellates and algae to bloom in municipal waters. Due to the nutrients accumulated, feeding the harmful algae to bloom, the shellfish consumed this because they just stayed in one place, unlike fishes, which are transient.
"I am unsure if it stays negative or positive (red tide warning) because it is on and off. We just sent our samples to the region, but there is no result yet." Mr. Zacajustifernan Cabarles , MBFAR stated. There are no available testing areas in the province. That's why they only rely on the test result from the Bicol Region, waiting for days to confirm the results; the lack of facilities also added up to the challenge. "We publish shellfish bulletin on conspicuous spaces on the public market and the Brgy. Captains and officials disseminate this information mitigation to tell the constituents not to consume shellfish." He added.
When asked about the long-term solution to this problem, he answered, "I think there's none because it's not man-made, it's a natural occurrence, and the chemicals don't trigger the algae; there's no long-term solution, just mitigation and public awareness, we are not the only one who has this (red tide) there are other places as well, and they don't have long term solution to the red tide as well."
To further inquire about that matter, Mr. Geralph Andrade of BFAR Masbate supported the statement, "Yes, it is a natural occurrence, and it happens from time to time, mainly because of climate change and the improper management of the water circulation; it's up to the management of the locality to remove the structures that destruct the outflow of water, the garbage and wastes to reduce the occurrence(red tide)."Even if there are red tide occurrences, it does not directly affect the fisherman, for there are options only for consumption.
When it comes to fishing, there have been disappointing experiences our local fishermen are facing in recent years. " Before, we enjoyed a lot of species of fish like tanigue and different types of fish, and also a lot of crabs and all. but now we only catch small fishes; we are enduring this small catch, and that's because of the illegal fisher lurking in our sea." Rogelio Plaza, 64 years old, a fisherman for 42 years. He raises his family on the coast with their Laya (fishing boat with lights)
"Those big steel boats dragging the sea floor they are the ones who are getting all of our fish; they are also using cyanide and then catching it with their fishnets; even the small fishes are floating; that's why we are going far just to catch some fish, these boats they are not from Milagros they came from Estancia and Roxas they are coming with their fish finder and GPS, they are just destroying whatever goes in their path." Roselyn Plaza 58 years old Laya fisherwoman for 13 years. " we are not reporting it because we are the only ones who are going to be in danger, all we hope for is the bounty of our Laya, whatever we will get we are grateful for it, these people already have cases filed on courts, but still they are doing the illegal fishing despite of it, they are getting a lot of income for this. She added. They hope that the government will stop these unlawful operations; together with the climate change that constantly affects the sea and its creatures, this prevailing problem continually adds to the agony of our fisherfolks.
"Sometimes we experience, sometimes abundance, but most of the time, we are short because of many consumers; we persevere through hardship even if there is no catch." Elizarde Beljica, 49 years old, 15 years fisherman. It is evident in his eyes the humility and the simple way of living he was used to. Marites De Jesus, 39 years old Dried Pusit maker, stated, " Just persevere and do not rely on the government help if they will give something, be grateful. If none continue to persist for your family, for the government, I hope you will help us poor by giving us even small assistance to add to our livelihood."
There are a lot of challenges that need to be addressed, and that is only in the Municipality of Milagros. "LGUs think that the job is only for BFAR, but we must work hand in hand. It was really hard for us to manage the whole island; having only three permanent employees, thankfully, we have the diligent staff that help us manage the task the National office mandates to us. We are hoping more local government units will put some policies aiming to protect our municipal water because they have autonomy on that; my message is my call for more people here in BFAR Masbate to help us fulfill our role in protecting and preserving the marine industry here in our province." Geralph Andrade was the Spokesperson of BFAR Masbate.
All in all, Masbate still needs a lot of help and improvement in order to unlock the true potential of its rich waters; with the collaboration of National and Local government units, the future is not bleak, and the fisherfolks will have protection and bounty that they seek.

A year ago in the densely populated urban shantytown of Agdao, three men gunned down a notorious Communist hit man, raised their rifles and shouted, ''Arise, masses!''
With this now-legendary incident was born a right-wing vigilante group whose imitators are quickly spreading through the Philippines in a new approach to counterinsurgency.
Many military and Government leaders, including President Corazon C. Aquino and Gen. Fidel V. Ramos, the Chief of Staff, have endorsed the concept of anti-Communist vigilante groups, even as fears have grown that a new form of armed terror has taken root in this violent nation.
The central Government appears to have been caught unprepared as copycat groups spring up around the country, and observations on the scene clash with military assurances that they are spontaneous and unarmed. Outside Influence a Question
Interviews with officials in Manila, Cebu City and Davao, of which Agdao is a part, left unanswered questions about any possible outside coordination of these groups and their new strategy.
Among other organizations, Causa, the political arm of the Unification Church founded by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, appears to have sought to capitalize on growing right-wing sentiment in the Philippines.
The original vigilante group, which has taken its name from that cry of vengeance, Alsa Masa, is armed and controlled by the local military commander in the city of Davao, which had become known as an urban ''laboratory'' for the insurgents.
With a system of checkpoints, armed patrols, taxation, propaganda, forced recruitment and summary justice that consciously mimics that of its Communist enemy, Alsa Masa has largely succeeded in driving the rebels from a city where, in many areas, they had taken effective control.
The Alsa Masa leader in Agdao, a 45-year-old tire dealer named Rolando Cagay, said his group raised money with weekly benefit dances.
Mrs. Aquino's secretary of local government, Jaime Ferrer, has ordered local officials throughout the country to form unarmed vigilante groups patterned on a village association called Nakasaka, or People United for Peace. Unarmed Only in Theory
Davao's military commander, Col. Franco M. Calida, dismissed the notion that unarmed groups could succeed, saying, ''This is an armed struggle.''
A reporter visiting Davao del Sur, a few miles south of Davao, where Nakasaka members man checkpoints with machetes and bows and arrows, found that some of them also carried pistols and homemade pellet guns.
There is an atmosphere of surprised relief in Davao at the quick retreat of open Communist force. The level of violence has sharply dropped in a city where three or more people were killed each day, either by the insurgents or the military.
But it is not clear to what extent the vigilante group was responsible for the rebels' retreat, or what its long-term success may be.
Colonel Calida said the withdrawal of the rebels from Agdao was a result of the success of ''deep penetration agents'' who touched off a violent reaction from the Communists. The rebels' fear of informers brought a series of killings in Agdao that alienated a previously supportive population. 'We Became Angry at Them'
''They were like gods here before,'' said Alejandro Amorado, standing at an Alsa Masa checkpoint in Agdao, speaking of the Communists. ''They killed the abusive people or drove them out of here. The people loved them.''
''But then they started killing even people who had not done anything -ice cream vendors, people who sold slippers,'' he said. ''We became angry at them.''
A local spokesman for the National Democratic Front, an umbrella organization that represents the Communists, acknowledged that the rebels had made mistakes and that Alsa Masa had been ''tactically effective'' in forcing them to return underground.
But the spokesman, who called himself Ka Gary, said several the vigilante groups were what he termed ''Alsa drama,'' putting on a show of converting to anti-Communism while they await a backlash that could ultimately play into their hands.
Some military officers expressed private concern that ''deep penetration'' could work both ways and that the weapons they issued to vigilante groups could fall into the hands of the insurgents. 'No Way to Be Neutral'
Meanwhile, Alsa Masa and its imitators have succeeded in polarizing the population.
''In the fight between democracy and Communism there is no way to be neutral,'' Colonel Calida said. ''Anybody who would not like to join Alsa Masa is a Communist.''
Alsa Masa members interviewed at checkpoints around the city said that each home was required to contribute one member to its nightly patrols and that the houses of those not cooperating might be painted with a red ''X.''
The Roman Catholic Church has also been caught up in the spreading polarization. The Auxiliary Bishop of Cebu, Msgr. Manuel Salvador, said recently, ''We really cannot blame these civilians who decide to arm themselves.''
As he spoke, vigilante groups were listing as targets other local churchmen who have been active in human-rights work. Priests of the Redemptorist order in Davao have been labeled ''Redempterrorists,'' and a group of Carmelite nuns has received threatening letters.
The police commander for Davao del Sur, Col. Jesus R. Magno, called the vigilante mobilization ''basically a psy-war operation.''
On a local radio station, a broadcaster named Jun Porras Pala read from a right-wing Causa manifesto and threatened doubters with retribution.
''We will exhibit your heads in the plaza,'' he told his critics in a recent broadcast. ''Just one order to our anti-Communist forces, your head will be cut off. Damn you, your brains will be scattered in the streets.''
It appears that the vigilante groups have carried out several killings as well as other acts of intimidation. Colonel Calida said 11 Communist rebels had been killed by vigilantes in Davao.
A former leftist militant who is setting up an Alsa Masa branch in Cebu City, Marianito Ventura, said: ''Of course if we come across a member of a sparrow unit, we liquidate him without notifying anybody. That is what they are doing to us.'' Sparrow units are Communist assassination squads.
He said his organization was useful to the military as a means of avoiding investigations of human rights abuses. ''We in the Alsa Masa don't give a damn about a review from the top,'' he said. Vigilantes in Other Regions
In recent weeks, vigilante groups have been quickly forming in other regions, adapting themselves to local conditions, and reports of abuses have begun to reach Manila.
On the sugar-growing island of Negros, planters have formed El Tigre, a network of armed groups whose threats this week drove 78 families to flee a rebel-influenced mountain area.
On the island of Cebu, a group called CACA, or Citizens Against Communism Army, has sent out armed patrols in remote areas that look in photographs like Communist rebel patrols and are said to have carried out attacks similar to rebel attacks.
In some areas of Mindanao and Cebu, right-wing groups have linked up with machete-wielding religious cultists called Tadtad, or Chop Chop, who believe they are immune to bullets and who ritually mutilate their victims.
Elsewhere, renegade military officers implicated in recent coup threats are said to have formed armed groups that advertise themselves as anti-Communist squads. Political Coercion Feared
Opponents of the vigilante groups warn that they provide the makings of private armies for a new generation of the warlords who have exercised local power in the Philippines.
''In a country with a very recent history of warlordism and fascism and right-wing military activism, I think this is a very dangerous phenomenon,'' said a senatorial candidate from Cebu, John Osmena. ''These groups can become the new instruments of political coercion.''
Already, the rapid growth of Alsa Masa throughout Davao has affected the tenor of local politics.
Few politicans openly criticize Alsa Masa, and even Mayor Zafiro Respicio, a human-rights exponent in the past, has found it expedient to endorse vigilantism., despite privateley expressed doubts.
''The whole city has turned right, hard right,'' said the managing editor of a local newspaper, Alberto Tesoro.
On a visit to Davao recently, President Aquino endorsed unarmed citizens' groups as a ''concrete manifestation of people power and an effective weapon against Communism without the use of firearms.''
But a political science professor at the University of the Philippines, Francisco Nemenzo, called this notion ''a mockery of the concept of people power,'' the term Mrs. Aquino gave last year to the peaceful protests that helped force President Ferdinand E. Marcos from power.

Butter Mammon (half-filipino!Iwa + filipino!reader)
ೃ‧₊› a b o u t t h i s p o s t° ➮ Pairing: none ➮ Oneshot ➮ Tags: platonic, half-filipino!Iwaizumi + filipino!reader ➮ Word Count: 1129
Today was a great day- a superb day. Your cousins had come over, all the way from Cebu (1) to Japan. It was awesome- mostly because they brought some great food over. They had packed some great goodies, which you were so excited to eat, mostly snacks since they couldn't bring most foods (fresh foods etc.) over on a plane. They did get to bring one of your favorites- butter mammon(2)! It was an absolutely amazing dessert (or snack), and the butter one is the best. (in my opinion anyways- )
You were more than happy to bring it to school; the sooner you could eat it the better! It was always so good to have it during lunch and eating it during school would make it even a bit easier to suffer through. You could probably brag to your friends how you had food from abroad, a small island country. You barely got to eat any of this, and it was such a treat. Of course, you wouldn't easily share it.
It was the start of your (short) food "trip" with some of your favorite foods. Of course, your cousins couldn't bring them in bulk and you had to share with your family, but at least you got some- and you'd eat as much of it as you could. You brought a butter mammon, the kind from Red Ribbon (2). It was always absolutely delicious, and it always lifted the mood when you ate it.
You had finished your drink and were going to the vending machine to get another. You ate your mammon while you were at it, enjoying every bite. After you ran out, you wouldn't get more for a long time, even years. It wasn't all the time that your cousins came around, after all. You started to think about what you were going to get from the vending machine. You had basically memorized all of the drinks in there, having gone to Seijoh for more than two years already. There were lots of good ones, especially their (favorite drink). It was one of the things you liked about the school.
As you were walking to the vending machine, you saw one of your classmates, Iwaizumi Hajime, sitting with his friends. He happened to look at you, and you waved at him, just a nice thing to do. They were sitting and talking, and as he looked at you, he noticed the mammon in your hand. He was mildly surprised, definitely interested. You thought he may have thought it was something else, as there wasn't too much mammon anywhere nearby these days. Or maybe he had gone to the Philippines once and tried them. You didn't know, and it didn't really matter too much.
As you arrived at the vending machine, you took a look at the stock available and chose one, taking a few coins out of your wallet to pay for it. When you started to head back, you noticed Iwaizumi walking towards the vending machine, wallet in hand. It was probably a coincidence, happened to need a drink too. You hadn't yet finished your mammon and it was about halfway done, and he looked at it.
"Is that butter mammon?" he asked. "Yeah," you said, as if it was obvious and it was common for one to recognize it. "That's great," he said, getting himself a drink from the vending machine for himself. "You ever been to the Philippines?" "Yeah, a few times, I have family who lives in Cebu," you said, wishing you were there, so that you could eat this whenever you wanted. "That's nice. It's always fun there. I remember one time, we went to Ayala and my siblings refused to get out of Timezone (3)," he laughed. You laughed as well, "Omg, yes, I could stay the entire day there. Then afterwards, I would go to the Mr. Donut and eat some donuts..."
The two of you ended up talking for the rest of the lunch period, about the experiences you had back in Cebu. Overall, they were pretty fun, and you enjoyed talking and relating to someone about this. You didn't really have any Filipino friends here in Japan, and it was really nice for a change to be able to talk about this without them asking all sorts of questions from their impressions of the country. Visiting a country really allows you to understand and absorb the place and the culture, and having family from there really deepens your understanding too. It's a different experience. They say that a picture may be worth a thousand words, but an entire 360 degree scene is worth a million.
You were happy that you had made a new friend, one whom you could share your experiences with. When you got home, you went to find another mammon, because you wanted to eat one. When you looked in the cabinet, there weren't any left. It turned out that your parents and their guests, who were your neighbors, had eaten them all by the time you got there. You were definitely disappointed, but there wasn't anything you could do about it now.
Since there was no mammon left, you decided to eat otap- something else you liked. It was flaky and sweet, a favorite among your family. Shamrock brand (4) was the best, and that was the one your cousins had brought you. It was always good, and you were never let down. Unless you count that one time your younger brother dropped the entire package and all of the cookies fell apart, it was always good, eating otap.
So, the next day, you brought some otap to school. You placed it in your locker very carefully, above all the other things so that it wouldn't get squashed and crumble. It would be such a shame if it did. Well, at least you could still eat it- pour it into your mouth-
Anyways, when lunch came around, you went back to your locker to get your lunch (with the otap) and you found it untouched. Just the way it should be. On your way to your usual spot, you spotted Iwaizumi, and after your long conversation yesterday, you felt that you had to brag to him about the otap too. It was just too good not to share. Not to make him feel bad or anything, just that you were really happy to have the otap- because it's just good, y'know? And while you were talking, you decided to give him a few of them, because you're really a nice person (4) and sharing is caring.
The next day, he came over to your house with a few snacks, saying, "I shared the cookies with my family, they were really happy to get them." You thanked him for the cookies and next day, you brought back a few sweets your mom had made as thanks, you had only given him small amount of them, and you felt bad (and your mom also insisted) that he had given you a whole bag of snacks. The two of you kept bringing food to each other as thanks for the gift before, and eventually you ended up joining their lunch group, sharing food with everyone else.
Notes: (1) Cebu is one of the biggest islands in the Philippines, and I used Cebu instead of Manila (the capital) because I've personally been there a few times haha. (2) Red Ribbon is a bakery which makes all sorts of good stuff, including mammon. It's pretty popular in the Philippines. (3) Timezone is an arcade, which I would often go to whenever I visit Cebu. I could personally be there for hours and not have played there enough... I once was given a bucket for all the tickets I was getting 😂 (4) I know you're a nice person don't say you aren't. :)
