THEY ARE SO ME
I am either vibing with the female leads of period dramas - the bisexual icons - the guy in the midlife crisis - the middle aged guy who is in some crisis - the supporting crew who need to get themselves together - the guy who inhabits the dark academia aesthetic - the woman who is trying to get shit done

I'm currently updating my portfolio so here's an illustration of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy! I also added the old one which is from 4 years ago (I think). Always nice to see the progress you've made over the years 😇 Hope you like it! 🥰

Miss Bingley to Darcy: You Belong With Me
Anna Chancellor played "Duckface" (aka Henrietta) in Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994 and Miss Bingley in Pride and Prejudice the following year. You almost wouldn't believe it was the same actress, she looks so different. Austen adaptations tend to be a who's-who of English actors with familiar faces popping up across adaptations (eg. Sophie Thompson* in Persuasion 1995 and Emma 1996, who was also in Four Weddings) but what I found interesting was the similarity of two shots in these movies.
Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas, with similar vibes to Miss Bingley) comes up behind Charles (Hugh Grant) as he watches Carrie (Andi MacDowell), the character he loves, her head over one shoulder, hand on the other (Miss Bingley would never!). Anna Chancellor as Miss Bingley, appears on Darcy's opposite shoulder while he's watching Lizzy Bennet. Both engage the men in conversations about the women they're watching.
The difference being that Fiona is in love with Charles and tells him so directly as this scene continues. Austen doesn't indicate Miss Bingley is in love with Darcy; it's likely she wants to marry him for his money and status. Miss Bingley never makes any kind of declaration to Darcy; it would be unseemly to do so. She does think she is a much more appropriate match for him than Lizzy. There is a shared pain of the person they want to be with, watching and wanting to be with someone else. Ordinarily it might be a stretch to say a modern woman wants to marry a man they love, but marriage is front and centre in Four Weddings, so it's likely.
Bonus: Anna Chancellor is also distantly related to Austen. It's a very small world
*Sister of Emma Thompson who adapted Sense and Sensibility and starred as Elinor in the 1995 film
If you'd like to discuss Austen with my privately you can book a "Read With Me" session.

I created this meme from inspiration from Addy's presentation. I thought that this meme was a good mixture of what we discussed in class and the movie Lost in Austen. In the movie, Amanda Price is unsatisfied with her life and somehow ends up in the world of Pride and Prejudice. In this she starts to play the role as a new character, and love interest. She creates this fantasy in her head from reading the book and diving into it. The book takes her to another world in her head and allows her to expand her imagination. In class we discussed how a good book can allow you to escape your real life and almost feel like you are living a different life. In the movie Amanda was unsatisfied with her love life which is why the book allowed her to escape. It allows you to live many different lives and be very different people. I think that people can feel that books are reality and create a false reality in their head, where they except the real world to mirror what is happening in the book. This is why sometimes people who are hopeless romantics find more enjoyment in reading a book then actually going out with people because their expectations are always disappointed. In Austen's books she creates a great ideal of men who will do anything for you , example Mr. Darcy. The meme I created allows insight on the idea that the men in books can be seen as real and can create standards for people to have when comparing to the outside world. This is also why people find enjoyment when reading the books and inserting themselves because this is the only time that there standards can be met with the characters they have created.

Book Review for Elizabeth of East Hampton
First, I must confess (with my head hanging low) that I have yet to read a Jane Austen book. I know, the shame! That being said, Audrey and Emily have inspired me to start with Pride and Prejudice. I have heard the collective sigh around the world anytime the name “Mr. Darcy” is uttered, and I fully admit, if the actual character is anything like the one in this book, I get it – I finally get it! Having enjoyed Emma on 83rd Street, I jumped at the opportunity to devour another Jane Austen retelling by this talented duo. As I suspected, it did not disappoint.
Elizabeth Bennet has dreams, goals, and aspirations. Having been accepted into Columbia, the possibilities of becoming a foreign affairs journalist are within her reach, until her father has a stroke. Suddenly, like being tossed and rolled by one of her beloved waves, her world is flipped upside down. Now she is the sole string holding the family together. Only she knows how to run the bakery, the Bennet livelihood, Lydia and Kitty’s future. Yes, she is one of five Bennet daughters and her father has mostly recovered and is working along side her, but Mary is too busy trying to save the world, and Jane loves being a teacher. Given until October to defer her first semester, Elizabeth decides to focus on the summer uptick that they lovingly call the “cidiots.” It is tourist season, the bread and butter of the community, bringing people from the city looking to escape. That includes the two men who stopped into the bakery that morning, one of whom, with just a single comment, managed to rub Lizzy the wrong way.
Will’s best friend Charlie was determined to get out of the city for the summer in hopes of helping his sister get through her messy divorce. How Will got dragged into it, he will never know, but Charlie was trouble if he wasn’t around, and for the sake of their business, Will was determined to stay close and keep Charlie on track. That is until a certain fiery redhead decides to provide a “helpful” suggestion to Charlie so they could have an authentic local experience. Will only went out to prove he wouldn’t back down from a challenge; he wasn’t expecting Charlie to fall head over heels for a certain Jane Bennet. Knowing this song and dance as Charlie does this every time he meets a woman, Will awaits the inevitable fallout while trying to stay in control and ignore the growing allure of one Elizabeth Bennet. When an unexpected visitor from his past blows into town, lies are exposed, truths are revealed, and Will begins to lose the control that he needs to survive. When an unexpected visitor from his past blows into town, lies are exposed, truths are revealed, and Will and Elizabeth must decide if control is more important than survival.
For those who want to test the waters to see if Jane Austen is their cup of tea, I highly recommend Elizabeth of East Hampton! Personally, I really need to either read Pride and Prejudice or bite the bullet and watch the PBS five-hour special! If Elizabeth of East Hampton was this good, the original must be phenomenal!
Available tomorrow - August 6th but you can preorder now!

Mr Darcy had a speech, but ended up speechless (as did Lizzy, briefly)
Mr Darcy had a whole speech when he proposed to Lizzy (it's related in the book rather than word for word, I think so the reader doesn't hate him), she was initially speechless and her response made him speechless. How could a woman not like him? They were always chasing him, just look at Miss Bingley. Hadn't he and Lizzy been flirting this whole time? Had he misinterpreted the whole thing?
Because of the manner of his proposal for a while love does "slip beyond (his) reaches."
"Problems, when compared to issues of poverty, natural disasters, and war, are not that big of a deal."
- Urban Dictionary, Champagne Problems
Champagne Problems is an appropriate title for Darcy too - he's a rich guy who's had things relatively easy (let's ignore parents dying early and his sister being induced into an elopement….he doesn't have to worry about his future like Lizzy, or deal with her embarrassing family, or be a female at any time on this planet).
If you'd like to discuss Austen with me you can book a Read With Me session
