"Jo loved Laurie! they were meant to be!"
As much as I loved Laurie and Jo's dynamic, Jo never loved Laurie romantically, it's even clearer in the books. She did have an intense amount of love for him, but it was strictly platonical.
After Jo rejected Laurie and he was off abroad, she had a conversation with her mother where she stated that she didn't love him as she should but just wanted to be loved by him.
Jo only wanted to be loved by Laurie because of how lonely she felt, especially after the loss of Beth.

Little Women is so much more than just "a little girls book"
Little women is so often discredited by many as just "a little girls book" but in my opinion it is so much more than that. there is so much beauty in this book and it explores complex issues such as female relationships, the nostalgia of childhood and how marriage has often been about any but love.
we can relate to the march sisters in so many different ways and that is the beauty of Little Women.
this week on The Confession Club podcast we talk all things little women and its messages, link above!!

Louisa May Alcott Wanted To Get Married
The controversial concept of feminism is a relatively new term that began to be employed at the end of the 19th century, and it is under debate still today what the term actually includes. To understand Louisa May Alcott´s views on marriage, we need to understand her transcendentalist views and women's rights movement ideas and laws regarding marriage and property.

In the 19th century. Most marriages were made because of economical reasons, but what we often miss is that it was during Louisa May Alcott´s life, the women's rights movement, a growing sense of equality and the ideal of companionate marriage grew.
Marriage no longer was a choice made by a person's parents, but an individual choice with love and courtship increasing their presence. Louisa rejects a marriage of convenience, calling it along with any other, another endeavour to love without the true feelings "a mere shadow". While studying Louisa I have become more sceptical about whether her relationship towards the Little Women was really as spiteful as it has been framed to be.

I believe we have some power over who we love. It isn't something that just happens to a person.

One question listeners: are you a Jo, Amy, Beth, or Meg? This episode, we’re discussing characters in the 1994 and 2019 versions of Little Women, and diving deep into subtextual readings and fan interpretations.
We’ll discuss disability, autistic, and queer readings, and try to answer our question: is Little Women a ‘story for every generation’, and why is it so popular?

the three march girls ( jo, amy and meg ) who survive into adulthood represent three different pathways women could take at the time.
marry for love and a traditional family (meg)
marry for security (amy)
marry to not be alone (jo)
all three girls have distinctive personalities and are different and this wide representation of women is so rare in a world where women seemingly can only be one dimensional, thats what makes little women so good.
all the girls are flawed but realistic and relatable.
we discuss this and more on the confession club, link above!!

Louisa May Alcott Wanted To Get Married
In Little Women, there are characters with certain real-life counterparts. For example, Marmee was based on Abba Alcott and Meg on Anna Alcott, but Friedrich and Laurie are mixed characters that are based on several people in Louisa´s life. Laurie had several real-life counterparts. Louisa´s good friend Al Whitman, who she acted with within the Concord Theatrical Society. Alf was a good friend of Louisa´s sister May as well. Next-door neighbour, Julian Hawthorn is also considered to be one of the real-life Laurie and he had a teenage crush on May. Ladislas "Laddie" Wisniewski was a 22-year-old composer who Louisa met in Poland when she was working as a companion to an invalid woman called Anna Weld.

Ladislas has been described to be a flirtatious prankster, and he referred to Louisa as his "little mama". Ladislas had tuberculosis and Louisa nursed him. It would seem that there was something romantic going on between them and then there was a conflict, for Louisa´s diary markings are violently scratched. Some Alcott scholars have speculated that Ladislas was flirting with Miss Weld.
There's very little known about Ladislas. He did beat tuberculosis and we know that he end up marrying and having two children. What is noticeable is that all the real-life Lauries were much younger than Louisa, even though in the book Laurie, is a few months older than Jo, for Jo, always remains a boy, even as an adult. Laurie refers to himself as the first boy Jo ever raised.

I have loved you ever since I have known you Jo. I couldn't help it. And I tried to show you and you wouldn't let me which is fine but I must make you hear now. Give me an answer because I cannot go on like this any longer. I gave up billiards, I gave up everything you didn't like. I'm happy I did. It's fine and I waited and I never complained because I- you know I figured you'd love me Jo.
