On the heels of his most controversial, allegedly “blasphemous” film, Ken Russell “took a break” by delivering one of his most meticulously-detailed, ambitious, and opulent films: a sprawling musical parody of the vaudevillian styles of the early 20th century and the Early Hollywood Musical…starring Twiggy! (She’s really good in it!).

Nothing succeeds like excess. That seems to have been Ken Russell's motto, well displayed in The Boy Friend. As I watched it, I thought the first parody of Busby Berkeley's kaleidoscopic production numbers for Warner Bros. musicals was brilliant. The second was entertaining. The third was ... well, maybe the law of diminishing returns had set in. The original stage musical was a campy sendup of the kind of musical comedies that P.G. Wodehouse, Guy Bolton, and Jerome Kern used to create for the Princess Theatre and later in the 1920s: tuneful light romances with silly plots. But for the movie, Russell superadds a campy sendup of the backstage movie musicals of the 1930s, borrowing plot and even dialogue from 42nd Street (Lloyd Bacon, 1933), hence the Berkeley parodies. I first saw The Boy Friend around the time of its first release, and enjoyed it. But watching it again now, I found myself looking at the clock after the first hour and a half passed. The version I had seen in the theater was the one MGM had cut by 25 minutes; the restored version runs an exhausting two hours and 17 minutes. That said, there is much to enjoy about Russell's movie, especially the vividly colored production design by Tony Walton and costumes by Shirley Russell (the director's wife). The presence of the great Tommy Tune in the cast is also a plus. The Sandy Wilson songs are pleasantly hummable, and the interpolation of two songs by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed that were featured in Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly, 1952) is nice. But a little camp goes a long way, and piling camp on camp can be tiresome, especially if the camp is done the way Russell does it: with a smirk rather than a wink.

The Good Life (Full TV Series) 1975-1978

A British sitcom, produced by BBC television. It was written by Bob Larbey and John Esmonde. Opening with the midlife crisis of Tom Good, a 40-year-old plastics designer, it relates the joys and miseries he and his wife Barbara experience when they attempt to escape modern commercial living by "becoming totally self-sufficient" in their home in Surbiton. On his 40th birthday, Tom Good is no longer able to take his job seriously and gives up work as a draughtsman for a company that makes plastic toys for breakfast cereal packets. With their house in The Avenue, Surbiton paid for, he and his wife Barbara adopt a sustainable, simple and nearly self-sufficient lifestyle while staying in their house. They turn their front and back gardens into allotments, growing soft fruit and vegetables. They introduce chickens, pigs (Pinky and Perky), a goat (Geraldine) and a cockerel (Lenin). They generate their own electricity with methane from animal waste, and attempt to make their own clothes. They sell or barter surplus crops for essentials they cannot make themselves. They cut their monetary requirements to the minimum, with varying success. Their actions horrify their kindly but conventional neighbours, Margo and Jerry Leadbetter. Margo and Jerry were intended to be minor characters, but their relationship with one another and the Goods became an essential element of the series. Under the influence of the Goods' homemade wine, called "peapod burgundy" (the strength of which becomes a running joke), their intermingled attractions to one another become apparent. John Esmonde and Bob Larbey wrote The Good Life for Richard Briers, the only cast member who was well known before the series was broadcast. Larbey and Esmonde were inspired by Larbey's 40th birthday, which seemed to them a milestone in most people's lives. Their story has the Goods' decision to pursue self-sufficiency conflicting sharply with the habits of the Leadbetters, who live next door. The conflict between the neighbours, balanced with an increasingly close friendship, creates comic tension as that friendship is tried to its limits. Peter Bowles was originally cast to play Jerry but was unavailable. He later starred opposite Penelope Keith in To the Manor Born. Hannah Gordon was considered for the role of Barbara but was ruled out, having recently played a similar role in the BBC sitcom My Wife Next Door. Esmonde and Larbey chose Felicity Kendal and Penelope Keith after seeing them on stage together in The Norman Conquests. The Boy Friend (1971). When the leading lady of a low-budget musical revue sprains her ankle, the assistant stage manager is forced to understudy and perform in her place, becoming a star and finding love in the process.

Visually, this film is genuinely pretty magical. The sets! The costumes! The choreography! It makes it a visual feast, which is why it’s such a shame that the story itself is so weak. Of course, that’s kind of the point - it’s a pretty scathing satire in every sense of the word, but it feels as empty as the very things it’s mocking. 5/10.

My Favorite British Sitcoms - As Time Goes By

Hello.

Maybe you’ve seen some of these on your local PBS channel. Maybe you caught an episode in syndication one on of the countless channels beamed across the airwaves. 

I stumbled across this one years ago, during one of my fairly regular sleepless nights. It’s “As Time Goes By”.

(Characters - Jean (seated), L-R - Sandy, Lionel, Alistair, Judith)

Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer portray the leads, Jean and Lionel. It’s a mature series, but not in a vulgar way. 

With minimal spoilers, it’s like this. During the Korean War era, Lionel and Jean met in London as young adults. Jean was in nursing school, Lionel was in the National Service (British Army). It was mutual love at first sight. 

A week after their meeting, Lionel was posted to South Korea. Each tried to correspond to the other, their respective letters were lost in transit, and each assumed the other lost interest. 

Jean and Lionel went on to their own paths. Jean became a nurse, and later opened a secretarial business. Lionel went on to manage a coffee plantation in Kenya (!). Each went through the ups and downs of adult life. 

Decades later, Lionel retired and moved back to London. He had an idea to write a memoir. Not being an adept typist, he hired a secretarial company to transcribe his manuscript. The company sent an attractive young brunette to pitch their business to Lionel...

During the series, we meet interesting characters, like:

Sandy (Jenny Funnell) - the efficient secretarial business office manager

Alistair (Philip Bretherton) - the rich, flirtatious publishing house CEO who takes interest in Lionel’s manuscript

Judith (”Judy” - Moira Brooker) - the business pitchwoman who has a thing for older men

Rocky & Marge (Frank Middlemass & Joan Sims) - Lionel’s parents, well-off retirees who are always up for interesting adventures & experiences

Mrs. Bale (Janet Henfrey) - the long-time, hyper-efficient housekeeper of the Hardcastle country estate

At its heart, it’s a love story. But, there are some funny moments & recurring gags, to include:

Lionel’s curmudgeonly nature & affinity for custard tarts

Jean’s penchant for preposterous cover stories when she’s stressed by her former sister-in-law Penny (Moyra Fraser)

Alistar’s effervescent personality & attempts at hipness

Mrs. Bale’s obsession with the British Shipping Report

Penny’s husband Stephen (Paul Chapman), a highly-successful dentist who once accidentally declined a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE)

Lionel’s numerous attempts to finish the only joke he knows, the one about “the parrot with no feet”

I’ve seen every episode, including the reunions, at least twice. Like many British shows, the dialogue comes quick and smart. There is a laugh track, but it’s used sparingly. 

One neat benefit - there’s rarely any “precocious”, loud-mouthed kids or adolescents trying to steal scenes. 

To me, it’s a relief to see a show with adults dealing with adult issues in an adult manner. 

For what it’s worth, I’d definitely recommend “As Time Goes By”. It’s decidedly different from what most people consider a current sitcom style. It may not be for everyone, but I love it.

Press Release:

The Photographic I – Other Pictures is the first part of a diptych spread over two years. The exhibition comprises new and existing work by around 20 international artists and photographers ranging from the 1960s to the present.

The selection demonstrates a lively interest in the power of the still image as a means of examining the world. It concentrates on indefinable images with an open view, whose multi-layering requires slow reading.

John Szarkowski once formulated the familiar distinction between photos that act as a window on the world and photos intended to reflect their maker. Other Pictures demonstrates that photographic images can perform both functions at the same time: they focus on the world and they invariably approach their subject in a subjective and sensory manner.

Photographic images not only show the world we live in, but are among its essential building blocks. New ways of producing and distributing images, and technological innovation in the civil and military spheres, make the medium repeatedly evolve in new directions and also seep into current artistic practice. The way photographers and artists handle these recent possibilities and challenges is one of the focal points of this exhibition.

The Photographic I – Other Pictures comprises work by artists and photographers including Lewis Baltz, Tina Barney, Mohamed Bourouissa, Moyra Davey, Marc De Blieck, Sara Deraedt, Patrick Faigenbaum, Peter Fraser, Alair Gomes, Jitka Hanzlová, Roni Horn, Stephanie Kiwitt, Aglaia Konrad, Jochen Lempert, Zoe Leonard, Jean-Luc Moulène, Zanele Muholi, Jean-Luc Mylayne, Trevor Paglen, Doug Rickard, Torbjørn Rødland, Michael Schmidt, Arne Schmitt, Allan Sekula, Ahlam Shibli, Malick Sidibé, Dayanita Singh, Wolfgang Tillmans, Marc Trivier and Tobias Zielony. In addition to this exhibition, we also show two films of the German filmmaker and artist Harun Farocki.
