Apply These 5 Secret Techniques to Improve Family Tours in Greece
Greece is a treasure trove of historical marvels, scenic landscapes, and vibrant culture, making it an excellent destination for a family vacation. To make your family tour in Greece truly memorable, here are five secret techniques that can significantly enhance your experience.
1. Plan Your Itinerary with Kids in Mind
Tailor Activities for All Ages
When crafting your itinerary, consider the interests and energy levels of all family members. A mix of educational, adventurous, and relaxing activities ensures that everyone stays engaged and happy. For instance, after exploring the ancient ruins of the Acropolis in Athens, you could unwind at the National Garden, where children can run around and enjoy nature.
Interactive and Educational Experiences
Opt for interactive experiences that are both fun and educational. Museums in Greece, like the Acropolis Museum, often have special programs and tours designed for children. Engaging storytelling and hands-on activities can make history come alive for young minds.
Pace and Breaks
A well-paced itinerary that includes regular breaks is essential, especially for younger children. Overloading your schedule can lead to fatigue and irritability. Incorporate leisurely meals and free time to keep everyone refreshed and happy.
2. Choose Family-Friendly Accommodations
Family-Centric Hotels
Select hotels and resorts that cater specifically to families. Many establishments in Greece offer family rooms, kids' clubs, and babysitting services, allowing parents some much-needed relaxation while children are entertained.
Vacation Rentals
Consider renting a villa or apartment, which often provides more space and flexibility than traditional hotel rooms. This option is especially beneficial for larger families or those with young children who need room to play and a kitchen for preparing meals.
Child-Friendly Facilities
Before booking, check if the accommodation has facilities like swimming pools, playgrounds, and easy access to family-friendly attractions. Proximity to the beach or local parks can be a huge advantage.
3. Utilize Local Expertise
Family Tour Guides
Hiring a guide who specializes in family tours can make a significant difference. A knowledgeable guide can tailor the tour to your family’s interests, provide engaging commentary, and handle logistics, allowing you to focus on enjoying the experience.
Engaging with Locals
Interacting with locals can provide authentic insights and recommendations. Greeks are known for their hospitality and friendliness towards children. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice on the best family-friendly restaurants or hidden gems off the beaten path.
Technology and Apps
Use apps and online resources to enhance your trip. Numerous travel apps offer self-guided tours, interactive maps, and local tips. These tools can help you navigate and discover more about your destinations in a family-friendly manner.
4. Embrace Local Culture and Cuisine
Cultural Activities
Involve your family in local traditions and activities. Attend a traditional Greek dance performance, participate in a cooking class, or join a local festival. These experiences provide cultural immersion and create lasting memories.
Exploring Greek Cuisine
Greek food is delicious and varied, making it ideal for family dining. Encourage your children to try new dishes like souvlaki, moussaka, and baklava. Many restaurants offer kids' menus and high chairs, making dining out enjoyable for the whole family.
Local Markets
Exploring local markets can be a fun and educational experience. Markets like the Athens Central Market offer a sensory overload of sights, smells, and sounds. Kids can learn about different foods and even pick out fresh ingredients for a homemade meal.
5. Prioritize Safety and Comfort
Travel Insurance and Health Precautions
Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. Familiarize yourself with local healthcare facilities and keep a basic first-aid kit handy. Inquire about any necessary vaccinations or health precautions before traveling.
Child-Friendly Transport
Plan your transportation with kids in mind. Whether renting a car or using public transport, ensure it's safe and comfortable. Many car rental agencies offer child car seats, and public transport in cities like Athens is generally reliable and convenient for families.
Hydration and Sun Protection
The Greek sun can be intense, especially in summer. Keep your family hydrated and apply sunscreen regularly. Hats, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing are essential to protect against the sun's rays.
Conclusion
A family tour in Greece can be a magical experience filled with adventure, learning, and bonding. By planning with your children’s interests and needs in mind, choosing family-friendly accommodations, utilizing local expertise, embracing the local culture and cuisine, and prioritizing safety and comfort, you can create unforgettable memories for your entire family. Greece’s rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality make it an exceptional destination for families. With these five secret techniques, your family tour in Greece is bound to be a remarkable and enriching experience.

Character Intro: Hebe (Kingdom of Ichor)
Nicknames- Angel Face by Zeus
Honey by Hera
Little Gem by Hades
The Little Queen by the people of Olympius
Brat by most of her siblings and half-siblings
Squirt by Ares
Age- 8 (immortal)
Location- Queenstown district, New Olympus
Personality- She's very outgoing and precocious. She’s also loud, loves being the center of attention, and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.
She’s currently a third grader at an exclusive private school in the city. Hebe goes to school with a new designer bookbag every day. Instead of usually being dropped off by her mother, Iris, Philyra, or one of her father's assistants, she now goes to school on her own- flying on her pet Pegasus, a girl named Marshmallow.
Being the goddess of youth, she may have the ability to make people younger, though this hasn’t been explored. Her other powers/abilities include being able to communicate with animals that are sacred to her father, conjuring/controlling nectar & ambrosia, vitakinesis (healing), drink conjuration (even alcohol), and even being able to control some aspects of springtime. She can also make people, other beings, & animals feel the effects of old age.
Hebe is an "official" cupbearer to the gods, supplying them with drinks during council meetings, the role previously held by Ganymede (god of homosexual love & desire). She mostly thinks that the meetings are boring, but does like to pay attention when something of note happens.
Hebe also models for her mother's children clothing line, Youthful Reign. There is a recent billboard in Acropolis Square!
Her go-to drink is a chocolate chunk milkshake from The Frozen Spoon. She also likes fruit punch, iced tea, cola, lemon-lime soda, & ginger ale. Her usual from The Roasted Bean is a small lemonade.
Hebe has an extensive collection of jeweled clutches from Diamond Ave. She also has the latest smartphone from iCHOR Tech- complete with a jeweled case designed by one of The Graces, Aglaia. It was a gift from her dad after the news of the separation came out.
Hebe's really close to her older brother Ares (god of war). She thinks that Eileithyia (Ella) (goddess of childbirth) is too bossy and Eris (goddess of strife & discord) is too mean. She hasn’t met Hephaestus (god of the forge) yet. Hebe has spent some time with her half-siblings- her favorites being Artemis (goddess of the hunt & moon), Apollo (god of the sun, music, poetry, healing, medicine, archery, plague, light, & knowledge), and Hermes. She thinks that Athena (goddess of wisdom) is more boring than watching paint dry.
Her BFF and fellow schoolmate is Prophasis (goddess of excuses). Hebe is also friends with Paidia (goddess of play & amusement) and Caerus (god of opportunity & luck). Other schoolmates include Myrízei (god of smell & gases), Physis (goddess of nature), Mneme (goddess of remembrance), Aceso (goddess of healing), the fourth grader Xenia (goddess of hospitality) as well as the fifth graders Eulabeia (goddess of caution), Melete (goddess of thought & meditation), Calleis (goddess of allurement), Ersa (goddess of morning dew), and Aidos (goddess of shame, modesty, humility, & respect).
In the pantheon, she likes Phliyra (goddess of perfume, paper, & beauty), Iris (goddess of the rainbow), and Demeter (goddess of the harvest & agriculture). Hebe is also really close to her uncle Hades (god of the dead). She visits him sometimes in the Underworld. They go ice skating, pomegranate picking, and they play with Cerberus at the dog park. Before Hebe leaves, she always gets a piece of jewelry that Hades designed & made for her. There's only one god that genuinely creeps her out and that's Geras (god of old age).
Her favorite food is the Imperial sundae from The Frozen Spoon. Hebe does enjoy her mother's samosas as well as her father's moussaka and cocktail shrimp. She also likes the tater tot grilled cheese sandwich from The Bread Box.
Guilty pleasures for her includes extra cheesy pizza, spicy tuna rolls from The Ocean Roll, caviar tartlets, & olympian sized onion rings from Olympic Chef.
Hebe's favorite holiday other than the Summer Solstice is Christmas! She thinks that her birthday should become an official holiday as well.
In her free time, Hebe loves spending time with her friends- constantly hosting sleepovers at the palace and pulling pranks on the workers there, watching TV and movies, playing with her toys or video games, doing lanyard, reading, bedazzling random objects at the palace, jumping rope, cloud surfing, shopping online (with her father's unlimited credit card), or spending time with her favorite siblings.
She's aware of her parents' current separation. Hebe's hopeful that the family will be together again someday. With Hera, they'll go on a shopping spree, then to the spa, and afterwards they’ll split an Imperial sundae at The Frozen Spoon. With Zeus, she goes out to dinner with him, they go cloud surfing, & then they’ll end the day with a movie night in their state of the art theater in the palace.
I want more candy. More toys. More pets. I want it all!”

Quarantine dream: day one.
It’s the Great Quarantine of 2020, and you and Roger find yourselves cooped up together. Will you get on each others’ nerves, or do you love each other enough to weather the storm? Warnings: Mentions of really weird sex stuff (as a joke), strictly 18+ Notes: New fic. It’s a bit on the nose, but if we don’t laugh, we’ll cry! I’m going to try and update this daily. Full disclaimer, it was written quickly and might be very disjointed.
Day one.
The missus is working from home now. We’re essentially going to be housebound for the foreseeable. She’s already forbidden me from revving the Porsche too loudly in the garage, coming into her ‘designated work space’ between the hours of nine and five, and trying to help her with the cooking and cleaning. Apparently I’m ‘getting in the way.’ I’ve been cast out to my ‘man cave’ during the daytime... and god help me if I leave to scavenge for snacks or even a cuppa!
Which one lives, which one dies, we’ll see! I have a feeling only one of us is getting out of here alive.
In other news, John sent me a video of him and Ronnie in Tesco. Trolley piled high with TP. Now I have the overwhelming urge to brave the dreaded Coronavirus and get the shopping in a couple of days early.
I’m clearly going to go mad, aren’t I?
One more hour of work. That’s what you told yourself as you settled back at your makeshift desk in the spare room. One more hour and then you could get the dinner on.
Working from home was harder than you imagined. Not having the commute was lovely, but only having contact with Roger – as much as you loved him – was enough to drive anyone to the edge of sanity.
And it was only day one.
Hunching over your laptop, you scrolled through the emails that had piled up during your tea break, now wishing you could just have a meeting. Times had changed and you didn’t have time for 800 word emails about your company’s next rebrand.
Soon enough, something out in the garden caught your eye.
Roger emerged from the garage, his white t-shirt spattered in dirt and grime from a day of tinkering with his collection of four-wheeled loves. He moved swiftly, shaking his head as he looked down at his phone.
You heard the back door slam closed and his footsteps trudge upstairs. Silently praying he wasn’t coming to bother you, you counted his footsteps in your head, imagining every door that lined the hall.
“You’re never going to believe this, darling!” Roger called.
Your eyes burst open the second he entered the room.
Roger leaned over you and thrust his phone in your face, so close you could barely see what was on the screen. “Look at John!” He screeched. “Look at him!”
“What am I looking at?”
Roger’s voice kept going up an octave every sentence until it made you wince. “The bastard’s cleared out Tesco! Look at his bloody trolley!”
Huffing and rolling your eyes, you turned around, going nose to nose with him. “How many kids does he have?”
Roger quietened down. “I don’t know,” he shrugged, “a lot?”
“Well, I don’t thi–”
“You’re not telling me that’s their weekly shop though. They’re stockpiling toilet roll! It doesn’t make you shit yourself! I’ve got a good mind to go down to Tesco and–”
“And what?”
Roger’s attitude came in peaks and troughs but now he looked utterly sheepish, sinking on to the edge of the bed and batting his lashes. “Maybe do the shopping a couple of days earlier? If you want.”
You sighed and leaned your head on the back of your chair, allowing your eyes to wander towards his. You couldn’t say no to him – he made it impossible for you. “One more hour of work and I’ll come with you to supervise.”
Roger’s eyes narrowed as a broad smile lifted his features. “Good.”
As Roger rose to his feet, you reached out to grab the hem of his shirt, pulling him into you. Your lips met with an audible sigh and a fleeting kiss. “And for the love of god, jump in the shower and change your clothes.”
“Why?” Roger smirked. “We’re only going out during the apocalypse.”
An hour and a clean shirt later, you and Roger bundled into the Range Rover to embark on the five-minute drive to Tesco, completely unsure of what you’d find when you arrived.
The radio droned on in the background, covering the latest developments from the Prime Minister’s daily press conferences. Roger listened on with disdain as he drove – he never had much time for politics at the best of times – but he still listened intently. The situation was getting serious enough to worry him.
Boris bumbled through the airwaves but his message was clear: stay home.
“It’s what we should be doing,” you sighed, leaning forward to reach into your handbag.
“What?”
You took out a box of latex gloves. You, being the sensible and prepared one, always made sure you had some in the house. Blowing into one and slipping it on your hand, you mumbled your response. “Staying home.”
“What are those for?” Roger asked, glancing over at you snapping on the other glove.
“We’re being careful. But you can’t guarantee everyone else is.”
Roger’s hand found your thigh and gave it a reassuring squeeze as the car spun around the corner into Tesco’s car park.
Neither of you were sure of what you were expecting.
Chaos? Crowds? Cars everywhere?
You and Roger sat in silence as the car thudded to a halt right at the front door. There wasn’t a soul in sight.
“This is creepy,” Roger stated. “Bet we’ll be going in to empty shelves.”
“It’s going to be ok,” you said, jumping out and heading towards the door. “Remember the shopping bags in the boot!”
You could hear Roger groan as he retraced his steps. “This is why I hate going shopping with you,” he grumbled, fumbling through the boot for the almighty Bag of Bags. “We’re rich enough,” he wittered, slamming the boot. “We can get plastic carriers.”
From the corner of your eye, you could see him stomping back to you as you grabbed a trolley. A small one, so Roger wouldn’t succumb to temptation.
“…All because some little Swedish girl’s bloody whining about the planet getting warmer… not a bad thing if you ask me.”
“What are you droning on about?” you asked, grabbing the Bag of Bags from him. You hoped that putting them in the small trolley would lessen the amount of space available to him too.
“Greta’s probably having a fucking field day,” Roger mumbled. “Us using those bloody sacks for the shopping. No cars on the road.”
“It’s not a bad thing. We’ve been in London how many years? And when have we ever been able to get a proper breath until now? I quite like the lack of traffic.”
“Make the most of being able to breathe, darling. Corona’s a bitch, I’ve heard.”
The sight of the baron wasteland in front of you stopped you in your tracks. No people, no food, just rows and rows of empty shelves.
“I have a list,” you said meekly, taking a crumpled piece of paper out of your pocket.
Roger laughed. “Good luck with that.” He barged past you, peering over his shoulder. “I’ll take the cleaning stuff, fruit and veg, and toiletries. You check the rest.”
Empty supermarkets were strange places. Flickering lights and empty shelves, the only sound came from the creaking wheels of your trolley as you snaked the aisles for something – anything – from your shopping list. The only items left were either expensive or things you’d never be able to cobble a meal out of. Bread and pasta were non-existent in this liminal space, as were eggs and flour, so you couldn’t even make those from scratch. All you managed to find were two sorry looking ready meals, a bottle of gin and a tin of chopped tomatoes – none of which were on your optimistic list.
Roger didn’t do much better, either. He seemed to spring out of nowhere with armfuls of Bayliss and Harding soap at a fiver a pop, a two-litre bottle of bleach and one measly aubergine.
“What are we going to do with that?” you asked.
“What, the aubergine?” he smirked, waggling his eyebrows.”That gin might loosen me up enough.”
“Oh, fuck off! When have we eaten aubergine, Roger!”
“Well,” Roger began, grabbing the trolley, “it’s like that nature man from the telly says. Adapt, overcome… and...”
You glared up at him, “and?”
“I don’t even remember.”
“This is dire.”
Having checked out your scant supermarket haul, you and Roger embarked on the drive home, trying to figure out what you could do with the food you had found.
“I’ve always wanted to shove an aubergine up my arse,” Roger huffed.
“Why’d you think I kept these gloves? I’ve seen the weird shit you’ve been watching,” You mused. “Oh! Moussaka! We still have mince!” you squeaked, bobbing up and down in your seat.
“Kill the mood, why don’t you,” Roger laughed. “But yeah, moussaka could work.”
“I think this apocalypse thing might just turn out ok after all.”

Day 4: Taking In The Foods and Sites of Athens
When traveling, it’s difficult to keep up with your sports teams back home. No TV. Weird hours. Never around internet. But this morning, I was lucky enough to wake up randomly in the middle of the night and get an opportunity to follow my Stanford football team from the warmth of my bed. Even though I couldn’t watch it, it was nice to follow them online to a huge win over ND! Woo! Go Card!
Immediately after, I fell back asleep and woke up in time for a breakfast full of yummy pastries from the bakery down the street. At breakfast, we finalized our plans for the morning, which began with a stroll to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the site we tried to see but couldn’t the other day. So we walked our same route to the temple, admired it in the bright sunlight, took photos, and moved on to the National Parliament.
Because today was Sunday, we were lucky enough to catch a little show put on by the Greek military in front of the parliament, which included a showcase of their very unique march, which I will describe as a one-leg-dominant-forcefully-hitting-of-the-floor-with-extraneous-awkward-looking-movements-in-between. Yeah, that about sums it up. The entire show of music and marching lasted about 30 minutes and after the crowd started to disperse, so did we. This time, we headed back toward the National Garden to give my mom a chance to enjoy some flowers and nature-y stuff. But disappointingly, there wasn’t much in the park to see, so we exited after roaming around for a bit and set our sights on the Monastiraki Flea Market.
The flea market was just an area of the city set up with tons of shops and streetside stands selling all sorts of random stuff, from nice merchandise to things you’d expect in a flea market. And in addition to nice things, there were tons of knickknacks that people were trying to rid of, it seemed. Wonder who picks those up… Anyways, we strolled through all the stalls and shops and before we knew it, it was close to lunch time and we were getting a tad hungry. Lucky enough, we walked and turned a corner and at the corner of Sarri and Leokoriou, we found a poppin’ little cart selling cheaply priced skewers of pork with bread. One skewer and two pieces of bread for 1 euro. What a deal! Lots of people were stopping by the cart, so we said, hey, why not try some as well? So we bought some skewers and chowed down the smoked pork sticks, enjoying the atmosphere of being in Athens and eating like a local.
After finishing our nice little salty snack, we walked over to the Roman Agora for a bit. Not much here that was any different from the other places. Just some pillars and whatever was left of the previous agora there. We then walked all the way around the area to get to the Ancient Agora of Athens with the Stoa of Attalos and the Temple of Hephaestus. This landmark was much more interesting because of the many different things it offered for us to see. The first stop we made was to the Stoa. This place was pretty cool because of the mid-afternoon shadows that were artfully cast upon the floor of the stoa, creating neat photo ops. But before taking advantage of the neat shadows, Minh and I took a look at the museum and the different historical artifacts that were collected there.
Before heading over to the other side of the agora, we had some photography fun with the shadows, and once we were done, we strolled over to the Temple of Hephaestus, took some photos, and got shooed out of the agora as it was nearing closing time. We then walked toward the Varvakios Market, hoping to fit in yet another stop before it got too late, but unfortunately, it was closed for the day. So instead, I took the family on a winding path through the neighborhood of Psyri, where we experienced the neighborhood’s high energy and lively crowds that were spread throughout the area’s streets, cafes, and tavernas.
Because we were strolling around some food hotspots that I had originally marked on my map as places to try, we ended up taking a short break from our exploration to do some dessert and sweets exploration at Nancy’s Sweet Home, a very well-known bakery filled with tons of people enjoying delicious sweets streetside. There, we indulged ourselves with the Love Cake, Cream Caramel, and Ekmek Kataifi. The Love Cake was a very decadent chocolate cake with melted hazelnut chocolate on top. So. Very. Decadent. Luckily I had milk to help wash it down. The Cream Caramel was like yummy flan. And the Ekmek Kataifi was like whipped cream on top of a baklava but the baklava, instead of being made with filo pastry sheets, was made of wheat straws. It was the least sweet of the desserts, which, by the end of it all, was happily welcomed. And again, as mentioned above, thank goodness for milk.
With our tummies filled with sugar and no longer craving anything sweet, we walked to the other side of the city toward the Panathenaic Stadium, one of the fine Greek stadiums that we noticed on our drive in on the first first day. The walk took quite awhile since we were walking from pretty far away and because we didn’t want to pay and wanted to, instead, sneak through the somewhat hidden entrance I had read about on the back slopes of the stadium. After hiking up the massive slope in the back, we finally found the opening in the metal fence, marked by two very bent fence posts. We waited for folks to walk by before squeezing through into the stadium grounds, where we made our way down to the stadium as the sun was setting. I stayed there for a bit taking photos and enjoying the view from the top of the stadium before I caught up with my family as we made our way out again and back toward town.
By this time, it was dark and the fam was getting a little hungry. And because of how the day had flowed, we were pretty far from the some of the Greek restaurants that I had originally marked to try for dinner. But, despite the distance, we persevered and walked all the way back across town to have dinner at Tavern Klimataria, a highly rated Greek tavern known for its food and its lively evenings of music and dance. The walk took forever, but we eventually made it to the homey restaurant. Upon walking in, we were welcomed by the nice Greek folk music swirling through the air and people eating, drinking, smoking, dancing, and having a grand Greek time. And this was exactly what I had imagined when I was looking for a traditional Greek tavern at which the family and I could enjoy an evening’s bite.
And the food was nice and homey. It was very much like a mom-and-pop homestyle restaurant that cooked batches of traditional Greek meals for locals who wanted to enjoy a lively evening out of the home. We ended up ordering the karneyeri, a delicious lasagna-type dish that was very similar to the traditional Greek dish moussaka, an eggplant dish, the grilled shrimps, and some light ALFA beer. And as we chowed down our delicious dishes, we sat and took everything in…. the folk music, the dancing, the singing, the clapping… we took it all in, in the true traditional taverna sense. What a way to enjoy a nice Greek dinner!
And man, was it horrible to trek all the way back to our home base after walking the entire day and walking all the way to dinner. Because my brother and I knew that we would be hungry by the the time we got home, we made a quick pit stop at McDonald’s before making our way home and chilling for the rest of the evening in preparation for the next part of our journey: Santorini.
5 Things I Learned Today:
1. With the march that they have to do, the soldiers in the Greek Army must have a difficult time with severe knee arthritis or tendonitis as they age. With all that weird motion of the legs and knees, I bet they help orthopods in Greece make tons of money! Hahaha
2. Baklava is a type of dessert and it is super similar to other types of Greek desserts in the way that it tastes and in the base on which it is made. That class of desserts seems to be predicated on honey, crunchy layers made of filo or something else, as well as chopped nuts. So sweet, but so yummyyyyy.
3. The street markets here in Athens have sidewalk vendors that sell nice things. And not so nice things. And when I say not so nice, I mean…. There are people setting up shop in random street corners, putting blankets out on the streets and selling all the random things one would find in the forgotten corners of their homes that no one else would seem to want. At least that’s what I assumed seeing what they were selling and how full their blankets were at midday.
4. There are tons of street carts selling corn and chestnuts here in Athens. I wonder if it’s a European thing, seeing that I saw similar carts in Switzerland, or if it’s a Christmas, winter thing...
5. Tavernas in Greece are rowdy. They are entertaining. They are full of energy. And they are quite the fun experience, an experience that everyone should be a part of when traveling!

A Thrilling City Break in Europe
There’s one question that we need to ask ourselves, have we missed travelling? Why of course we have, so why not take a trip around Europe, and be mesmerized by its pure beauty, several cultures, epic history, incredible artistic and culinary variety. Travel Center offers a city break in Europe that would not be forgotten.
We offer various kinds of itineraries that would be perfect for short breaks in Europe. And there are also various types of travellers with different requirements and every destination has something special and unique to provide.
This itinerary is for a city break where you can enjoy some local delicacies, stay at hotels or explore the cities various landmarks.
A City Break in Europe, Cologne
Cologne is a stunning, pedestrian-friendly metropolis on the Rhine River with a skyline consisting of the famous Cologne Cathedral as its unique feature.
You can explore several arts and entertainment facilities, historical gems, as well as nearly 100 galleries and around three dozen museums.
Cologne is famous for its 12 exceptional Romanesque churches – particularly the splendid Cologne Cathedral – all a simple walk from the historic Old Town, the Cologne Karneval which is held in February, and also Its university which is one of the oldest and biggest in Europe.
Here’s a tip about transportation on your city break in Europe, Cologne;
If you want to explore, you can rent a bicycle for about 12 euros a day, or get a bus which is the easiest as they will be able to take you anywhere you want to go, mainly where the trains and trams don’t travel to.
Amsterdam
Visit the world-popular 17th century capital of Holland, you can cycle to undiscovered places, explore windmills, countryside, and beaches, immerse yourself in the culture at Westergas, cruise past canal houses and bridges, look for unusual finds at Europe’s largest flea market and uncover Amsterdam’s independent shopping streets.
Amsterdam is famous for plenty of things: the stunning ancient buildings, spectacular museums, enjoyable atmosphere, cycling lifestyle, boat trips on the canals, the Rijksmuseum, Dam Square, Anne Frank House, and the red light district.
Here’s a tip you should keep in mind on your Europe city break in Amsterdam;
One of the initial things that you would notice about Amsterdam is its bicycle ruled roads. The city is packed with them and the citizens enjoy travelling on them. It’s one of the most bicycle-friendly metropolises in the world, and the ideal way to take in Amsterdam’s grandeur is by getting on to a bicycle and travelling the city. But, much to the irritation of the residents, most tourists don’t see the bike lanes and walk on them. Kindly keep in mind that the bicycle lanes in Amsterdam are generally red. A bike doesn’t travel like a car, and it is not easy to stop it suddenly within seconds. Please be careful of bike lanes and stay off them to keep away from getting hurt. Also try and get the I Amsterdam City Card, which is a convenient visitor pass that gets you complimentary access to Amsterdam’s several famous appeals.
Paris
Paris’s alluring attractions are renowned and for great reason. Welcoming sidewalk cafes, shiny boutiques, top-notch museums, a legendary restaurant scene make Paris the runway model of cities. You could go for an evening meal at relaxed contemporary bistros which offer simpler meals, split your times amid the Louvre and tinier Museums and discover the “Real” Paris on the Canal St. Martin.
It’s famous for its cafe lifestyle, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Moulin Rouge, pastries, and fashion. Paris is frequently seen as having splendor, grace, and as being a confidently romantic city.
Here’s a tip you need to remember in Paris when you’re in the best city break in Europe.
If you want to tour the city, Uber is low-priced than taxis and are the ideal way to travel around if you don’t want to wait for a bus or pay for a taxi. The Uber Pool choice is where you could share a ride to get even better savings (though you could get your own car as well). And make sure you get a Paris Museum Pass, it’s a prepaid card that gets you admission to around 70 museums and landmarks throughout Paris.
Rome, a City Break in Europe
Rome is still one of the best and ancient cities in the world. You can explore St. Peter’s Square, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Spanish Steps, Roman Forum, Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museums, and the Palatine Hill.
Rome is famous for its spectacular architecture, with the Colosseum (one of the most famous and emblematic monuments in the world), Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain as the chief appeals. And, you’ll find the tiniest nation in the world in Rome; Vatican City.
Here’s a tip when you’re in Rome on your Europe city break.
Go on a complimentary walking tour – This is a brilliant way to discover more about the history behind the places you are exploring and acquaint yourself.
Get a tourist card – If you are going to visit several museums, think about purchasing one of Rome’s countless budget cards like the Roma Pass, Archeologia card, or the Biglietto 4 Musei (Four Museum Combination Ticket). You pay one flat charge for all the appeals.
Iceland
Generally recognized as “The Land of Fire and Ice”, it’s also the land of light and darkness. You can explore the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara, uncover the marvels of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, relish natural treatments at the Blue Lagoon which is a geothermal spa, and perhaps the country’s most toured geothermal spa and try whale watching in Husavik.
It’s famous for the Northern Lights, gorgeous and untouched nature, and Vatnajökull glacier the largest glacier of Europe.
Here’s a tip to keep in mind when you’re in Iceland on your city break in Europe
Check weather and road conditions – When you look at the forecasts for a clear night on your search for the northern lights, keep in mind to check about road conditions and check for travel alerts too. Icelandic weather is known to vary quickly, so it’s important you observe the weather conditions frequently over the course of the day.
Switzerland
Switzerland might be a tiny country but there is so much to view and experience on your city break in Europe. You could visit the Matterhorn and encounter some stunning views, tour historic castles, explore 200 peaks, ride the Jungfraujoch Railway, and acquire a visual retreat and tour the Lucerne Historical Sites to discover more about cultural facts.
The country is famous for its picturesque Alps, its rolling hills, meadows, lakes, medieval towns, astonishing culture, gorgeous festivals, and tasty food. It is also famous for its chocolates, cheese, and watches, while the Swiss knife is a myth in itself!
Here’s an important tip to know when in Switzerland
If you plan to travel around the country, think about getting a Swiss Travel Pass. This offers discounts of nearly 50% on the bus, train, and trams. Aside from the savings with public transport, the pass also provides complimentary entrance to around 500 museums and galleries all through the country.
A City Break in Europe, Tenerife
Tenerife is the island of a thousand encounters. You can get lost in nature, unwind on the beach, hike Teide, stroll the ancient town cobbles, explore the cultured port settlements, visit delightful historic towns, enjoy a theme park or try some golf.
The Canary Island of Tenerife is famous for having the tallest mountain in Spain, and also for its black lava beaches.
Here’s a tip to keep in mind when in Tenerife
Hire a car, particularly if you are a first time traveller to the Island. It would offer you astonishing freedom to tour all sections of the island, and Tiede Park is a must-see, it’s your decision if you want to pay 25 euros for the cable ride to the top.
Spain
Spain is both a stereotype come to life and a country more varied than you ever thought. You can explore stone palaces, snow-covered mountains, massive monuments, and classy metropolises, all of which have made it a preferred travel destination.
Spain is famous for its great food, brilliant people, its picturesque splendor and its huge coastline. The country has become a favorite destination particularly for the food-loving, wine-hugging, and siesta-enjoying people.
Remember this tip on your Europe city break in Spain
Transportation in Spain – Spain is pretty well linked through high-speed trains which means that you could easily get from one place to the other. With that being said, the ideal way to travel around Spain in our view is to hire a car. Not only would you have the freedom to travel wherever you want to but it would also permit you to tour smaller uncharted places.
Greece
Greece is historic sun-bleached ruins penetrating blue skies, the mild Aegean slurping a boundless shoreline, and a culture alive with passionate music, delightful food, and thrill-seeking pursuits. You can explore Athens, the Peloponnese, the Cyclades (Santorini), and the Dodecanese archipelago (Rhodes).
Greece is famous for the formation of the Olympic Games, and for its exceptional and historical construction. Some examples consist of the Acropolis in Athens, the Sanctuary of Delphi, and the historic Theatre of Epidaurus, and the Meteora; A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, Meteora is a marvel of nature and architecture alike.
Keep in mind this tip when you’re in Greece
Try the local food – If you are looking for customary flavors, then get to the middle of the city. The ones most visited by the natives are found at the bottom of the Acropolis. These are the customary mom and pop restaurants. Some of the old-fashioned dishes that you should not miss out on are moussaka, souvlaki, and baklava.
A City Break in Europe, The Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve, Portugal is one of Europe’s preferred holiday destinations, you can relax on dreamlike beaches, tour seaside caves, tee off at some of Europe’s top golf courses, and lose yourself in attractive old towns.
Algarve, Portugal is famous for being delightfully diverse, able to charm an extensive cross-section of tourists; there are immaculate beaches for families, waterparks and theme parks for thrill-seekers, lively nightlife for partying and ancient towns for cultural tourists.
Here’s a tip to remember when you’re visiting The Algarve, Portugal on your city break in Europe
Take Public Transport – While trips of the Algarve or driving yourself around are ways to go, the cheapest and easiest method is to utilize the area’s trains and buses. That’s because while rental car prices go up in peak season, the price of train tickets stays the same.
Malta
Malta is an archipelago that rests amid Sicily and the Northern African coast. It is filled with fascinating architecture, excellent turquoise sea, delightful cities, and a relaxed vibe. You can swim in Comino’s Blue Lagoon, experience the Panoramic View at Upper Barrakka Gardens, explore the 3 cities of Cottonera, play at Popeye Village, and visit the silent city of Mdina.
It’s famous for its diving, architectural locations, and festivals, Malta is also a popular film site in its own right. Malta’s theatrical cliffs, magnificent landscapes, and historic structures make it the ideal setting for several feature films and TV shows, mainly those focusing on an old-fashioned feel.
Remember this tip on your Europe city break in Malta
Malta Public Transport runs public bus services in Malta and Gozo. The service covers both islands quite well. Malta has 80 different routes and the smaller Gozo has 15. Also, the best about Malta’s bus system is that it is combined with Google Maps, and the stops are plainly specified!
A City Break in Europe, Gran Canarias
Uncover beaches as diverse as the landscapes of Gran Canaria. The volcanic sites, the exceptional Macaronesian flora, and the widespread pine forests make Gran Canaria worthy of this exceptional honour from UNESCO. You can experience sailing, yachting, windsurfing, water-skiing, scuba diving and so much more.
Gran Canaria is a destination with plenty of diversity on offer, but it’s most famous for its beaches. There are around 80 expanses of golden sand surrounding the island, most swept by the type of waves surfers dream of.
Keep in mind this tip when you’re in Gran Canarias
Transportation – A car provides the greatest flexibility for travelling around Gran Canaria. Around Las Palmas, the motorway could get hectic in rush hour, but past the metropolis, traffic is light and driving is a delight.
Majorca
There are plenty of things to do in Majorca to delight you, you can trek across the dramatic summits of the Tramuntana mountains, relax amid the vineyards, look through markets or choose one of the 300-plus beaches and bays to call your own.
It’s famous for beach resorts, cozy coves, limestone peaks, and Roman and Moorish ruins.
Here’s a tip to keep in mind when in Majorca
There are several bus and train systems which link many parts of the island, but in the summer buses are frequently very hectic – so get in the queue as early as you can.
Ibiza
Ibiza is all you require for an ideal summer holiday. You can explore sandy beaches encircled by nature, astonishing cliffs and turquoise crystal waters, make sure you try scuba diving, and snorkeling too.
Although the island’s size is comparatively small, it is filled with amazing marvels, appeals, and things to do. Ibiza is extensively famous for its wild nightlife.
Here’s a tip about transportation on your city break in Europe, Ibiza;
Ibiza is a small island and it’s very simple to travel around it. You could use public buses but they won’t take you to every section of the island. Though to explore at your own pace the best you could do is to rent a car.

HERCULES(1997) QUOTES
Uh, guys? Olympus would be that way.
I can't believe this guy. I throw everything I've got at him, and it doesn't even...
What... are... those?
Um, I don't know. I-I thought they looked kinda dashing.
Aren't you... a damsel in distress?
I'm a damsel, I'm in distress, I can handle this. Have a nice day.
Well, they're just fine. You know, a little dark, a little gloomy. And, as always, hey, full of dead people. What are you gonna do?
He's not gonna be happy when he gets outta there.
You mean, *if* he gets outta there.
Pinhead with hooves? Well, you know how men are. They think "No" means "Yes" and "Get lost" means "Take me, I'm yours."
You know, wh-when I was a kid, I-I would have given anything to be exactly like everybody else.
You wanted to be petty and dishonest?
I'm a big tough girl. I tie my own sandals and everything.
I don't know. Um, maybe we owe him money?
So you took care of him, huh? "Dead as a doornail." Weren't those your *exact* words?
Remember, like, a few years ago, every other boy was named Jason, and the girls were all named Brittany?
People do crazy things... when they're in love.
Okay, fine, fine. I'm cool. I'm fine.
You were willing to give your life to rescue this young woman.
For a true hero isn't measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.
____, when I'm with you, I-I don't feel so alone.
Is Wonderboy here for real?
So, can't. Love to, but can't.
Look, I learned my lesson, okay?
Thanks for everything, ___. It's been a real slice.
He's gotta have a weakness, because everybody's got a weakness
Ohhhhh, at least out loud I won't say I'm in love.
People are... are gonna get hurt, aren't they?
Nah. I mean, it's, you know, it's a possibility.
Ah, but dreams are for rookies, kid. A guy can only take so much disappointment.
Aren't we forgetting one teensy-weensy, but ever so crucial little, tiny detail?
Honey, you mean "Hunk-ules!" Ooh, I'd like to make some sweet music with him.
How sentimental. You know, I haven't been this choked up since I got a hunk of moussaka caught in my throat.
We dance, we kiss, we schmooze, we carry on, we go home happy. What do you say? Come on.
You might feel just a little queasy. It's kinda natural. Maybe you should... sit down!
Now you now how it feels to be like everyone else. Isn't it just peachy?
It looks better that way. No, it really does.
*I've* been captured! Whoa. Hey, watch the glasses.
It's all right. The sea of raging hormones has ebbed.
Aw, how cute. A couple of rodents lookin' for a theme park.
I'll be fine. Just get me down before I ruin the upholstery.

36 Hours in Curaçao – The New York Times
Turquoise waters, delicious seafood, colorful snorkeling and white sand: There are a lot of places in the Caribbean that have all these wonderful things, but Curaçao is one place you might not have discovered. Sandwiched between Aruba and Bonaire, and a short boat ride from the Venezuelan coast, Curaçao is bigger than its island neighbors and packed with memorable treasures for enterprising travelers to discover. Of the Dutch West Indies, Curaçao may very well be the most Dutch; the island’s capital, Willemstad, looks like a colorful mini Amsterdam, and Curaçao’s currency is the guilder, the former currency of the Netherlands (though United States dollars are readily accepted across the island). Restaurant menus often feature both bitterballen (fried Dutch meatballs) and kabritu stoba (Antillean goat stew), and when the Dutch soccer teams play, the bars are packed with orange shirts drinking Heineken and speaking Papiamento, the local language. Amid this blended culture is a beach hopper’s dream, and the best way to enjoy everything the island offers is by renting a car and roaming the island’s roads until you find the perfect blue cove.
Friday
1) 12 p.m. Arepas and smoothies
Nestled on a central street in Punda, Willemstad’s old town, is La Bohème Curaçao, a cafe that appeals to travelers for its smoothies and strong coffee. Grab a seat outside where vendors stroll by with handicrafts and fruit, and recharge with some vitamin-packed drinks like “The Hulk,” a green smoothie packed with broccoli and celery that somehow tastes like sherbet. Don’t forget to also get an arepa: the chicken curry ones are especially tasty. Lunch for two, $25.
2) 1 p.m. Exploring Old Town
One of the best ways to get started in Curaçao is by wandering Punda’s tight alleyways full of shops and art galleries. Drop into Nena Sanchez’s gallery to check out the local artist’s bright canvases of colorful fish and tropical flowers. Stop by Senior & Co. for a sample of their blue Curaçao liqueur, made from the peels of Curaçao’s laraha oranges. Keep your balance as you walk over the scenic Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge — a floating bridge that swings open to let ships pass — to the other side of Willemstad, called Otrobanda. And finally, gaze back across the water at Handelskade, the colorful strip of colonial Dutch buildings that offer Curaçao’s classic postcard shot.
3) 3:30 p.m. Looking back
To understand the blend of cultures in Curaçao, you’ll need to first understand the history of slavery in the Caribbean. Find out about that and more at the small Kura Hulanda Museum in Otrobanda, close to the harbor where the Dutch once traded slaves. The exhibition, spread across 15 structures, walks visitors through a slave’s journey from Africa to the big port of Curaçao, where Dutch businessmen in the Dutch West Indies Company traded slaves, alongside spices and cheese, with the Spanish, Portuguese, French and other plantation owners. The museum is considered one of the most complete exhibitions on the Caribbean slave trade in the region. Museum entry, $10.
4) 5 p.m. Toes in the sand
Ready to get close to the water? For a low-key and beautiful sundowner, head to Pirate Bay, an open-air bar set on a fisherman’s bay in Otrobanda. Call ahead to reserve a table closest to the water. And come in your swimsuit; once you’ve tasted your first Curaçao-spiked bright blue tropical drink (try the Blue Lagoon) and snacked on lightly fried lionfish (an invasive species in the Caribbean), take a dip in the clear waters of the bay as the sunset reflects off its surface. Snacks for two, $20.
5) 9 p.m. Crafty cocktails and ceviche
Walk past the hungry tourists waiting for a table at Mosa and duck into the restaurant’s sister establishment, the dimly-lit, grotto-like Caña Bar and Kitchen, where locals and a few knowing tourists crowd the bar, and where you’re bound to rub shoulders with a new friend by your second round of drinks. Speedy (and handsome) Dutch bartenders craft smart tropical cocktails from passion fruit, basil and other fresh ingredients. The ceviche and ribs are not to be missed. Dinner for two, $50.
Saturday
6) 9:30 a.m. Brunch with a view
The most beautiful beaches on Curaçao are on the northwest end of the island, in Sabana Westpunt. Make your way north, through the cactus-dotted landscape, and along the way, stop by Landhuis Klein Santa Martha. This 17th-century manor on a hill is a well-restored model of Curaçao’s historic landhuis, or Dutch colonial country houses. They host overnight guests, but also serve anyone healthy meals with a vast view over the Santa Martha bay and its hills. On its open sun deck beside the plunge pool, enjoy the apple crostini or a focaccia breakfast sandwich with your mint tea. Brunch for two, $45.
7) 11 a.m. Beach hopping
The best way to enjoy this stunning region is to rent a car and go beach hopping. Although most beaches have a chair rental option, few have much else in terms of facilities, so consider packing a cooler with water and snacks, and don’t forget your goggles and snorkel. Start with two of the most popular beaches, Playa Porto Mari and Cas Abao, both peaceful inlets with a good amount of space for sunbathers to spread out and the occasional palapa. Next, visit Playa Lagun, nestled between tall cliffs with good snorkeling. Then drive over to Kleine Knip, being sure to snorkel where the cliffs meet the sea, and where sea turtles like to swim. Save plenty of time for Grote Knip (also called Kenepa), perhaps the most scenic and calm beach on the island, with bright, implausibly blue waters the color of the liqueur the island is famous for. Finish your beach hopping with a snack of funchi (polenta) fries and fresh lemonade at Restaurant Playa Forti, where you can watch daredevils jump off a cliff into the sea.
8) 6:30 p.m. Underwater psychedelics
The instructors at Ocean Encounters dive shop are ready and waiting to blow your mind with a night scuba dive using fluorescent (rather than white) lights, which make the already beautiful reefs of Curaçao glow with astonishing patterns. Look out for eels’ eyes peeking out from coral castles, and watch the glowing green tentacles of a sea anemone wriggle in the tide. You can arrange a private tour or go with a group. A two-hour, one-tank night dive, with all equipment included, costs $80 per person.
9) 9 p.m. Supper in the city
Starving from your dive? Head to one of the hippest places for dinner in Curaçao: Kome. This two-story spot in Pietermaai, known for using local ingredients, offers stiff drinks and big servings. Snag one of the tables on the patio or climb up to a perch beneath the soaring rafters, which offers a bird’s-eye view of the busy bar. Sample the roasted vegetable plate, or go for the rib-eye with chimichurri sauce. Don’t miss the homemade hot sauce. Dinner for two, $50.
10) 10:30 p.m. Late night people-watching
Stroll through the Dutch fairy tale old town of Pietermaai, filled with alleyways criss-crossed with strings of lights and brothels-turned-boutiques. Duck into the world of Mundo Bizarro, an eclectic bar full of cushy used furniture and cozy corners. Pick one of the couches in the alleyway, or set up at a picnic table on the lush balcony to enjoy some cocktails, along with live music and people-watching.
Sunday
11) 10 a.m. Breakfast on the farm
One of the most exciting culinary projects in Curaçao today is the Hofi Cas Cora farm, inland from Willemstad. On weekends the bright red urban farmhouse opens its on-site restaurant, a small, open-air cafe with picnic benches that catch the trade winds. The cuisine focuses on local, sustainable produce. Take your time exploring the farm, with everything from papaya trees to baby peacocks, before trying the house salad packed with fresh-picked greens or the sweet potato moussaka. Brunch for two, $30.
12) 12 p.m. A date with nature
Feel the brutal, wild power of the sea by visiting Shete Boka National Park, where waves funnel into volcanic rock, carving out caves and bokas (inlets), and blasting up into the air in spouts that are both frightening and thrilling. You can drive around the park, but hiking one of the park’s routes is the best way to really immerse yourself in nature’s glory. Entry $10 per person.
Lodging
Most lodging options in Curaçao are focused around Willemstad, the island’s capital city, and in particular, the city’s buzzing Pietermaai district. Short-term rentals, however, are scattered across the island, and private apartments with an ocean view can be found for $80 a night and up. Most hotel rates on the island are listed in dollars, but it is always good to double-check.
Pietermaai is crammed with charming boutique hotels, beckoning Instagram lovers with chic white furniture, purple-lit pools, and tropical foliage. But the one that stands out for both ease and sophistication is the Saint Tropez Ocean Club. The long infinity pool looks out onto the rough waves of this part of the island, and shaded white sun beds make for the perfect perch to request another glass of cold white wine. A standard room costs around $125, but a splurge for a better room might be worth it in this case: a $225 suite comes with a large balcony and a view of the water directly below. (Pietermaai 152, Willemstad; 599 9 461 7727; from $125).
If a honeymoon vibe is what you’re after, or if you simply want to experience full-blown relaxation, the Baoase Luxury Resort is your spot. This exclusive, discrete resort (no photos allowed) consists of a series of bungalows set around a private lagoon, whose waters are protected from the waves by a rock outcropping dotted with deluxe beach chairs. The “beach butlers” are at your service, and kayaks and snorkel gear are freely available. If you don’t want to stay the night, day passes are available for $50. (2 Winterswijkstraat, Willemstad; from $575).

The Worst Date
I don’t like to discriminate but there’s a legitimate reason I don’t date South Asian guys. It’s not a strict rule and it’s certainly not because I don’t find them attractive but this date is the straw that broke the camel’s back.
It was the nearing the end of my first year at university and my friends had winded up at our usual student dive. As with many university friendship groups in first year, ours was a mish-mash of people from the halls we resided in. You would expect this group to be fairly diverse - yet I was the ‘token’ Asian girl because this group was as white as they come (their whiteness will become more apparent later on).
As expected for a weeknight, the bar was dead except for a handful of lads playing pool in the adjacent corner. They seemed slightly older, perhaps in their third or fourth year because they were minding their own business and not shamelessly ‘peacocking’ like first-year boys did. I wish I could say the same for the tipsy and attention seeking girls I was with; bored and probably a little sexually excited, one of the loudmouth girls playfully jeered at the boys, beckoning them to come over and of course, they did.
I distinctly remember sinking into my seat trying to escape the true horror of the situation; my tipsy friends tactlessly trying it on with 3 guys who we just randomly met in a bar. As it transpired, the 3 guys all turned out to be medical students. These girls had just hit the student ‘jackpot’. There were more of us than there were of them so naturally I didn’t really get involved as much, however, one of the medics happened to be Asian - cue peak whiteness. I had absolutely no initial interest in any of these guys but my friend noticed one striking similarity between myself and this random guy: we both happened to be of the same ethnicity. After an uncomfortable and slightly racist introduction for Jamal and I, we had no choice but to live through this awkward situation and talk.
Surprisingly, near the end of the night Jamal asked for my number and asked if we could go for ‘dinner’. Met with cringe inducing “ooooOOOO”’s and “aaaawwww”’s from my now very drunk flatmates, I accepted. He seemed nice.
Fast forward to date night: we had decided to go to pizza express, he was going to pick me up in ten minutes so I slipped my kitty heels on (it was Aberdeen, 2010, give me a break) and made my way downstairs. His car was already parked up, Jamal was pleasantly early. As soon as I entered the car I could sense something was slightly different to when we had first met, the mood was slightly more serious and intense, not jovial and chilled out like before. We exchanged pleasantries but the mood didn’t give me the opportunity to speak freely. As soon as we parked up outside pizza express he got out the car and walked around to my side to let me out. This is the kind of chivalry that is really intense and actually a little bit uncomfortable, however, I appreciated the gesture and stepped out. This is the fastest a date has ever declined for me, this early on.
“Ugh you’re wearing heels? What the fuck?!”
I’ve never felt so gobsmacked in my life. It should be noted that Jamal is a shorter gentleman, slightly shorter than myself - this never bothered me though, I was cool if he was. However, this was a situation I had never been confronted with - short guy syndrome. I did my best to gather myself and apologise but this had already tarnished my mood for the evening. They were kitty heels for God’s sake.
Once seated, Jamal instantly pulled out a 2-4-1 voucher to present to the waitress, something I would usually find savvy in a person but not today. I tried to make myself comfortable so that I could at least try and enjoy the evening ahead but to no avail, I was about to be interrogated. It should be noted that there can sometimes be a strange dynamic between Asian men and women from my experience: certain expectations suddenly exist, Asian men feel entitled to you, you are judged by harsher standards to white women and are almost always judged for your family, lifestyle and job prospects.
“So, why do you want to date me? Is it because I’m a doctor?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I did my best to roll my eyes but couldn’t hide the done-ness from my face.
“Erm, not really, you asked me and I thought it might be nice to go for one date at least”
“But you don’t want to date me because I’m a doctor, correct?” I’m not even embellishing his speech, this is exactly how he said it.
“No. To be honest I’m not studying medicine and if I could be arsed with it I would. Just not my bag. You have to study for years, right?”
“Mhm. So you study….Philosophy?”
“Yes”
“What do your family think of that?”
And there it was. Good old fashioned sexist Asian family values. I bit my cheeks to give me time to process everything I had just heard. He just assumed my family would be disappointed in me for studying Philosophy and not medicine, like the good Asian child he is to his parents. Luckily the food arrived at this point so I took my time replying to him.
“They’re fine with it”. Little prick.
My aubergine moussaka was thankfully delicious so all was not lost. I decided to move change the subject.
“So what do you do in your spare time?”
He mumbled something about being a football referee. “Oh so when can I see you play?”
This was the first occasion I’d seen him heartily bellow.
“That’s funny. I don’t think women should come to football matches. Put them in a different stadium”.
I started shoving double spoonful's of mousaka into my mouth at this point just so I could get away sooner. A sexist Asian stereotypical football fanatic. Definitely not my bag.
The rest of the conversation primarily comprised of small talk, nothing memorable. However, I do remember us asking each other what we looked for in an ideal man or woman. “I like her to be skinny, pretty, straight hair, smart, good job, makes enough money but not more than me, don’t really want to her to be sporty.” I just smiled and nodded. How could this date get any worse? Then the time came to pay for the bill. Now I’m definitely not one of those women who expect a man to pay for the date but if a man like Jamal has such ludicrously sexist standards for women then I expect him to at least adhere to the basic tenants of traditional chivalry. Jamal was able to sink deeper, though.
“So I bought the voucher along so that we could make the bill cheaper to split. My mum checks my bank statements so I don’t want her to see that I’ve been on a date.” And that was the cherry on top of the worst date of my life. Fuck you, Jamal.

Movie of the week 週末電影推薦!
» 死侍2 Deadpool 2
