The Sims 4 New Game Patch (January 14th, 2025)

EA has shared the patch notes for an upcoming game update, scheduled to drop today (January 14th) at 10am PST.

If you have auto updates enabled in Origin’s “Application Settings”, the game will auto-update once you open Origin. If you have auto-updates disabled, you will need to manually update by clicking the game in your library.Advertisement

To ensure your game is up to date, check the game version found in Documents > EA > The Sims 4 > GameVersion.txt. Your game should now read: PC: 1.112.481.1030 / Mac: 1.112.481.1230; Console: 2.05.

Base Game Updates

Main Menu Visual Refresh

To start off with, we have a brand-new Main Menu visual refresh! We’ve pushed aside the clutter to make space for your Sims! New Game / Resume Game has moved from right to left, as have a few of the other navigation options. Home, Events and Store can be found at the top, along with the Options panel in the far right. It may take a moment to get used to the New Game / Resume Game new location, I know it took a moment for some of us. A few other changes to mention:

The visual update includes a bit of fresh paint, a little less clutter, with the desire to keep information clear and discoverable for you!

The Sims in the center are your last played household Sims, all of them!

And important updates and information from The Sims are focused on the right side.

Speaking of the Main Menu, you’ll receive a message about the upcoming Blast from The Past Event.

Starting on February 4th, this birthday event will feature rewards inspired by iconic items from the 2000s, such as a milk carton, telephone, alarm clock, triple-tiered birthday cake, and inflatable chair and loveseat.Advertisement

Smoother Gameplay

We’ve optimized mouse movements, preventing slowdowns and making gameplay more responsive on PC, Console, and Mac.

Base Game Townie Home Refresh

Players who start a New Game will automatically see the updated lots in the world!

Players who would like to see the update in their existing saves must manually update the homes by placing the new lots from the “My Library” tab.

Potion Color Issue on Consoles – Fixed a bug where potion colors in cauldrons would change to gray after loading a saved game.

Texture Reloading Optimization – Improved the texture reloading process on Xbox One to reduce “out-of-memory” crashes, and providing more efficient loading of game lots.

Base Game:

We resolved an issue where you couldn’t minimize the game in Fullscreen mode using DirectX 11. Now, key combinations like Alt + Tab and the Windows key will work as expected.

“Work in Off hours” interaction does not clear the Tense buff for workaholic Sim.

[AHQ] Fixed cases of really high Bills. Lot Taxes will now only count the property value and household_net_worth not add value from anything in inventories.

[AHQ] “Try for baby” in shower will now fill the Hygiene motive.

I finally got my 2024 Apr Camp NaNoWriMo Official Winner Certificate!

Did Tech Support finally answer my frantic plea? Well, no. But I had read something about recreating the record to get the record connected with the offical NaNo project. So, I searched in Support and found this.

I followed these directions to create an identical project. I copied every day's entered word count and put it in again.

My plea for help that went unanswered. This post was actually deleted!

So I created an unofficial certificate on Canva.com and put it on social media. I was very upset.

Here was my official project, and I hit my goal and had badges...but no winner graffiti. It wasn't linked as an official project. I'd seen a banner telling me to link it, but when I tried, every project I ever did was listed...except this one, that I just won with.

I looked up on the forums what someone else tried, and they accidentally deleted their project! I posted on the forums about my problem. The other post had been from November. But both that one and mine got deleted! I figured no help was coming, so I made my Unofficial NaNoWriMo Winner Certificate and posted it to Twitter, with a link to the doc for others to create their own if they liked.

But, I'm not one to just give up. So, I tried creating a new project. First, i went to my account main page.

Under My NaNoWriMo on the bar, I chose Projects to get to this one, then Stats to get my word counts per day.

If you left click and drag your mouse so your daily counts are highlighted, you can Ctrl-C [or Control-C] on a Mac to copy this to the clipboard. Open a Notepad file and Ctrl-V to paste. Use this later.

Go back to your Projects page and create a new project. Note that, you must do this before Apr 30 or you can't choose Camp NaNo for your Goal.

I then went in Stats on the NEW project I just created and did Add New Update. Only on the Stats page can you add words for a different day than today!

Now my project says Winner [the top one of the two Galactic Ministers' Staff Projects, on the right side of the bar]

And, I was able to click on it and download my official certificate! Yes, it's a .pdf, but I opened it and did a screenshot with the Game Bar, that's Windows-G if your keyboard has the Windows button on it. It brings up choices for screenshot or movie, and is handy. Find the screenshot in Video->Captures and double click. Use the cropping tool in Photos and save a copy. Now you can post your Winner Certificate to your social media!

That's how I fixed my project so it now says Winner. Good luck to all of you!

Yes, I am upset at what happened on the youth forums. This happens on a lot of forums, and I think the answer is for someone brilliant to write an AI that can detect these vile people! It is bad that it happened, but I still participated, not in support of perverts who took advantage of innocent youth just trying to enjoy writing. I still think the spirit of NaNo is good, and I will continue to set my goal and write 3 times a year.

The Oxyd Series (Classic Mac, Dongleware, 1992/1995/1993/1996)

They can all be found in these collections, but it's easier to get them (and hteir manuals) from these links, in order of their original versions' release: Oxyd, Per.Oxyd, Oxyd Magnum, Oxyd Extra. For each, you'll want the first file listed. For the first game, getting the last file as well is convenient for reasons given in the description; it renders the first game's .sit.txt file obsolete. For the second game's .sit.txt file, see step 4.5 in the instructions below

You can run the games on modern systems by following the instructions below. I believe in you!

Open this in-browser emulator.

Drag your chosen .sit file onto the emulated desktop.

Open The Outside World, then Downloads, and drag the file you'll find there onto Infinite HD.

Open Infinite HD, then double-click the file you copied to it and wait for it to decompress. If no new file or folder appears afterward, close and re-open Infinite HD.

4.5. If the file was a .txt.sit file, open The Outside World, then Uploads, and drag the resulting .txt file to it; your web browser should then download it as a .zip file containing the .txt file.

TIPS: There's lots of instructions in-game as well as in the manuals. You can turn a mirror-block's mirror without moving the block. Per.Oxyd has a mode where you can play the two-player campaign as a single player - you'll be given an item you can use to switch between characters.

The Beauty of Being Able to Do Stuff on My Mac With One Hand

I get that it sounds shady, or like a great accessibility story, when I talk about being able to use my Mac one-handed. But it’s neither. Allow me to explain!

My default mode for using my Mac …

… is with my right hand on the trackpad, and my left in the home row position – for instance like this:

Here I'm on my couch, with a laptop tray in my lap. More on this later.

I totally get that both hands on the keyboard is the default for many. And I’m there quite a lot as well, and love keyboard-driven software. But, for some reason, the tasks I’m doing call for the above even more.

So I’ve optimised my Mac to be able to do a lot with only that left hand on the keyboard, and only that right hand on the trackpad.

My office setup.

I really like the Magic Trackpad, as I can have the “desktop” setup be really similar to the laptop one. I do have a gaming mouse at the ready – but if I had to use a mouse, I guess I would try to recreate as much as possible on the Magic Mouse.1

The right hand and trackpad

I’ve used BetterTouchTool (and some default options) to have the trackpad be extra useful. (I can also recommend Swish, even though it doesn’t fit what I want to do with the trackpad.)

Here are the main gestures I’ve set up, and that work in “every” program:

I like both Exposé and Mission Control, so these are four-finger swipes up and down.

Four fingers to the right is New Tab,

and four fingers to the left is Close Tab.

Three fingers to the left and right move between tabs.

Three fingers down will give me the menu from the menu bar where my mouse is (via the app Menuwhere). This is especially nice on big monitors.

One-finger tap is obviously Left Click, and two-finger tap is Right Click. But I’ve also set it up so three-finger tap is Middle Click (like pressing down on a mouse wheel)– which will open links in new tabs in browsers.

Three-finger click will send Cmd+R, to refresh stuff.

While browsing, it’s just so smooth to be able to three-finger tap a link to open something in the background, then (when I want to check it out) just tree-finger swipe to change the tab, three-finger click to refresh it (if needed), and then four-finger swipe to close it when I’m done. Especially while chilling with the laptop in my lap (as God intended), it’s really underrated to have a great browsing experience with one hand! Also neat while drinking coffee. 👌🏻

The left hand and keyboard shortcuts

The two main things I’ve optimised for here, are opening apps and window management. I also use Paste quite a lot (with its paste stack feature). To be able to do this, I’ve had to set up a lot of custom hotkeys. And to have them not conflict with the default ones, most of them use two “modifier keys” that aren’t used normally:

The ✦ Hyper key (Shift+Control+Option+Command)

The ¬_¬ Meh key (Shift+Control+Option)

I’ve used Karabiner-Elements to set it up so holding Caps Lock gives me ✦ Hyper, and holding (not tapping) R or U gives me ¬_¬ Meh.

I’m mostly using Raycast 🖇️ to actually set the specific hotkeys (including launching shortcuts).

This key is used only to launch apps. For instance, I used ¬_¬ + W to open the terminal Warp 🖇️. However, I’m currently using Ghostty – but I’ve kept the same hotkey. So that’s why some make sense, and others don’t.

Here are my current hotkeys:

Now, one can, of course, also open apps with a launcher and typing – but that requires two hands to be done effectively. And you can also use Cmd+Tab or something similar – but it’s just much faster to immediately launch (or switch focus to) the app you want with a single stroke.

✦ Hyper

This key is both used for window management (which I go more into here and here) and for more general global hotkeys.3

When it comes to window management, I’ve (sort of) made a grid under my left hand:

✦ + S = Fullscreen

✦ + D = Right Half

✦ + Z = Bottom Left

✦ + X = Bottom Right

As you can probably understand, I can rapidly launch the app I want, and then place it where I want:

✦ + P = Launching Raycast AI chat

✦ + Å = Define the selected word, with examples of use (Claude)

Try it for yourself!

I can strongly recommend setting up (at least some of) this for yourself. The easiest parts are the Hyper key (with something simple like this) (with a bunch of Raycast hotkeys) and some trackpad gestures in BetterTouchTool:

I’ve added some as global gestures (like four-finger swipe right sending Cmd+T), while others (like changing tab) needs to be set per app. But as long as you have a backup of the setup, it’s really a set-and-forget-thing!

man, i LOVE the rush you get in the days before burning out

Took me a few days but I managed to upgrade a bunch of old code and packages, opened literally hundreds of documentation and troubleshooting tabs (and closed most of them! only about 1152 to go), BUT I managed to get the Heptapod runners to actually build and push docker images on commit, AND it deploys it to my kubernetes cluster.

And yeah I know that someone who just uses some free tier cloud services would take 2.4 minutes to do the same, but I get the extra satisfaction of knowing I can deploy a k8s cluster onto literally any machine that's connected to the internet, with ssl certificates, gitlab, harbor, postgres and w/e. Would be also nice to have an ELK stack or Loki and obviously prometheus+grafana, and backups, but whatever, I'll add those when I have actually something useful to run.

Toying with the idea of making my own private/secure messaging platform but it wouldn't be technically half as competent as Signal; However I still want to make the registration-less, anon ask + private reply platform. Maybe. And the product feature request rating site. And google keep that properly works in Firefox.

Anyway, realistically though I'll start with learning Vue 3 and making the idle counter button app for desktop/android, which I can later port to the web. (No mac/ios builds until someone donates a macbook and $100 for a developer license, which I don't want anyway.) This will start as a button to track routine activities (exercise, water drinking, doing dishes), or a button to click when forced to sit tight and feeling uncomfortable (eg. you can define one button for boring work meetings, one for crowded bus rides, one of insomnia, etc). The app will keep statistics per hour/day/etc. Maybe I'll add sub-buttons with tags like "anxious" "bored" "tired" "in pain" etc. I'm going to use it as a simpler method of journaling and keeping track of health related stuff.

After that I want to extend the app with mini-games that will be all optional, and progressively more engaging. At the lowest end it will be just moving mouse left and right to increase score, with no goal, no upgrades, no story, etc. This is something for me to do when watching a youtube tutorial but feeling too anxious/restless to just sit, and too tired to exercise.

On the other end it will be just whatever games you don't mind killing time with that are still simple and unobtrusive and only worth playing when you're too tired and brain dead to Do Cool Stuff. Maybe some infinite procedurally generated racing with no goals, some sort of platformer or minecraft-like world to just walk around in, without any goals or fighting or death. Or a post-collapse open world where you just pick up trash and demolish leftovers of capitalism. Stardew Valley without time pressure.

I might add flowcharts for ADHD / anxieties, sort of micro-CBT for things that you've already been in therapy for, but need regular reminders. (If the app gets popular it could also have just a these flowcharts contributed from users for download).

Anyway, ideas are easy, good execution is hard, free time is scarce. I hope I get the ball rolling though.

The Best HIDs for the Mac

HID stands for human interface device. This usually refers to keyboards and mice but can refer to anything that lets you provide inputs to a computing device.

I use the term HID rather than simply saying "keyboard and mouse" because the best HIDs for the Mac aren't a keyboard and mouse: The best HIDs for the Mac are a keyboard and trackpad.

The Mac has evolved a lot over the years, and so has its HIDs. There was a time where mice on the Mac only had a single clickable button in contrast to the PC's two: left mouse button and right mouse button.

I don't know if the Mac did this to differentiate itself from the PC or because Apple had done the hard work of researching to all hell mice and determined that an extra mouse button was superfluous. It might have been both.

While the Mac works very well with a variety of HIDs from third-parties, the best HIDs for the Mac are first-party HIDs, which is to say Apple HIDs.

The Best Keyboard for the Mac

While I enjoy a mechanical keyboard as much as the next nerd, the best keyboard for the Mac is one of the Magic Keyboards with Touch ID. There's a model with a Numeric Keypad and one without. Take your pick. I prefer the one with the Numeric Keypad because it has a Numeric Keypad but also because you can get it with black keys.

You can try to live your life without Touch ID, and while you might be able to accomplish much without it, Touch ID on a purchasable keyboard was a big deal for me when it came out. I had been waiting for Apple to create one for years as a Mac mini user, where BYOK (Bring your own keyboard) was the philosophy. This unlocks Apple Pay directly on your Mac without needing an iPhone or other device with biometrics (Face ID or Touch ID). Additionally and obviously: It lets you unlock your Mac or several applications that would normally require a password. Very cool.

The Best Mouse Trackpad for the Mac

We aren't going to talk about the Magic Mouse 2. And the reason why we aren't going to talk about it is because you can't charge it and use it at the same time, which is a ridiculous and indefensible design decision. Shame on you, Apple.

This leaves us with the Magic Trackpad. In 2024, it's technically the Magic Trackpad 2. The original Magic Trackpad was grey and took 2 x AA batteries and worked great. I liked it a lot; but the Magic Trackpad 2, while being rechargeable, also comes in Black, with a wider surface, feels silky smooth, and comes equipped with Force Touch, giving you more versatility in the input commands you can provide. Plus, as a flex: It has no moving parts. You aren't actually clicking it when you press down, it's just providing force feedback to simulate a click. Groovy.

I find it fascinating that an HID normally designed for laptops would make its way to the desktop and would become the best way to interact with your Mac. I supplement the functionality of the Magic Trackpad with the application BetterTouchTool, which lets you program additional gestures than those available in macOS. With the amount of gestures I can make on the Magic Trackpad, I never once feel like I'm less productive than with a mouse. I say this as someone who rocked a Logitech gaming mouse on the Mac for years specifically because I wanted to be able to do more with my HID. While I won't be gaming with the Magic Trackpad anytime soon (I think Minecraft was vaguely playable with it), I much prefer the touch and feel of the Magic Trackpad.

Apple added some shortcuts while the update of macOS Monetary for MacBook to make workflow easier and smooth. 

You can still edit some and decide how you want to use them. Trips and tricks are supposed to make life easier while saving yourself some time. Apple takes great care in offering a polished, user-friendly experience across all of its devices. 

Macs are no different. However, with a computer capable of so much, clever techniques and shortcuts are certain to sneak through and go undiscovered.

Activate Spotlight for Searching 

Press Command + Space to bring up a helpful search interface that will help you discover files on your Mac. You can easily search for a file, search for a website and choose from which browser you want to search with. Covert currencies, from rupees to dollar. Switch Between Apps

Hot Corners

System Preferences > Mission Control > Hot Corners is where you set them up. 

For example, the screen saver will start, when your pointer moves to the left-right corner and when you move the pointer to the top-right corner, the screen will lock. The bottom-right corner is set as Quick Note by default. 

When setting up a Hot Corner, hold down the Option key if you wish to use Hot Corners but don't want to activate features accidentally. The Hot Corner will not activate after that until you hold down the Option key.

Hide a window 

To hide a window in the background just press command + H and it will be hidden in the background, but you can get back to that window by clicking on the icon of that application or by pressing command + Tab.
