update I have resigned myself to new hampshire
out west: I'm not even looking at any trail with less than 1,000 feet of elevation gain, it won't be worth the drive 🙄
in MA: almost 500 feet of elevation gain, and only two hours away? thank god!! a mountain!

OSRR: 3691
today was a decent day.
last night mom and i packed my suitcase for my trip, so today was just getting the last few things together before going. i also helped chelsea pack their stuff for their trip that's coming up. it's funny - mom got back on saturday, i left sunday, i get back tuesday, chels and james leave wednesday. there's one day of overlap before someone else leaves.
it's just funny to me.
i was sad, however, to discover that the jamba juice was closed today at the airport. although i probably should've expected that, since it was a sunday. i keep forgetting that detail.
but this hotel is the one i stayed at with my family when my sister and i were little. chels and mom were sick the whole time and so i got to go adventuring with dad. the few things i remember about it have more of a dream-like feel to them, more than a memory.
of course, they've redone the place in the 23 years in between my stays here.
but still. it's cool.
i ended up ordering doordash for dinner from tgi fridays and rita's because i needed substantial food and i wanted italian ice. but i messed up. i didn't eat the italian ice as soon as i got it.
i was in the middle of ironing stuff so they'd be ready for tomorrow. but i'm prepared for tomorrow as much as i can be.
also the people who sat by me on the flight today were really nice! they were up for a friend's wedding at mount monadnock, so that was a joyful occasion. they were really nice to talk to and they were funny and we shared the same brain cell for a few minutes there. we definitely live on the same corner of the internet.
one thing about marriotts is that they have irons in their rooms. my tub drips, but i didn't have to call about an iron.
i'll have to be sure to watch for people and the environment in my interviews. mom reminded me that this isn't just their chance to see if they like who i am - it's my chance to see if i like them.
so that'll be good.
after eating dinner i sat and sewed up a large portion of the slit in my favorite dark blue dress. that way i don't show my entire leg to whoever is doing my interview on tuesday lol.
i texted joel and my mom today and told them about the progress and how it is here. i also called my mom so i could show her my room. it's small, but it's got a sofa! a sofa where i can cross my legs and sit on it like a kindergartener on the floor. it's delightful. and comfy.
breakfast comes early tomorrow but it is what it is.
and yes, i did start my period today. i have all of my painkillers for that.

Hike the Robert Frost Trail on National Trails Day June 01,2024
"This 3-hour hike will take you to the summit of Bare Mountain (elevation: 1,014 feet) and Mount Hitchcock (elevation: 1,002 feet) in Amherst. Bare Mountain is a prominent peak of the Mount Holyoke Range, and part of the greater Metacomet Ridge that stretches from Long Island Sound to nearly the Vermont border. Rising steeply from the Connecticut River Valley, its bald summit offers sweeping views.
You’ll be guided by Kestrel Land Trust’s new Land Steward, Kerri Goldfuss, who will lead the 3.6-mile loop hike that includes a newly improved section of the Robert Frost Trail as well as the New England Trail (historically known as the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, and now designated as a National Scenic Trail). Meet new people or bring a friend and get your blood flowing during this “peak” experience, which also commemorates the 150th anniversary of Robert Frost’s birth (March 26, 1874).
The 42-mile Robert Frost Trail (RFT) winds through the heart of Kestrel Land Trust’s service area east of the Connecticut River. Kestrel’s team is partnering with the Appalachian Mountain Club, the MA Department Conservation & Recreation, and other community members to improve and maintain this beloved regional long-distance trail."

This one time in Girl Scouts we went on a hike of Mount Monadnock that included an overnight in The Lodge on the mountain. Our sleeping quarters were basically a long room with a series of bunk beds, but there was a larger common room with checkers and cards and outdated magazines
And a large grey stone fireplace in which a fire was built because it Got Chilly and there was tea handy for anyone who wanted
All of us got closer and closer to the fire. And then an elderly man (whose name I never got, who has almost certainly passed on by now) was sitting in a chair by the fire - I think a ladderback- and said quite casually to the room at large that he would like to share a poem. And everyone came close. Adult hikers. Girl Scouts. Chaperone moms. Lodge workers. And this is what, as a sat mildly burning in the heat of the fireplace some three feet away from his ages knees, he recited to us at such a slow and thoughtful pace that it was as if he were discovering it as it came forth from his lips:
Birches
BY ROBERT FROST
When I see birches bend to left and right
Across the lines of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy’s been swinging them.
But swinging doesn’t bend them down to stay
As ice-storms do. Often you must have seen them
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning
After a rain. They click upon themselves
As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored
As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel.
Soon the sun’s warmth makes them shed crystal shells
Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust—
Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away
You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen.
They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load,
And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed
So low for long, they never right themselves:
You may see their trunks arching in the woods
Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground
Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair
Before them over their heads to dry in the sun.
But I was going to say when Truth broke in
With all her matter-of-fact about the ice-storm
I should prefer to have some boy bend them
As he went out and in to fetch the cows—
Some boy too far from town to learn baseball,
Whose only play was what he found himself,
Summer or winter, and could play alone.
One by one he subdued his father's trees
By riding them down over and over again
Until he took the stiffness out of them,
And not one but hung limp, not one was left
For him to conquer. He learned all there was
To learn about not launching out too soon
And so not carrying the tree away
Clear to the ground. He always kept his poise
To the top branches, climbing carefully
With the same pains you use to fill a cup
Up to the brim, and even above the brim.
Then he flung outward, feet first, with a swish,
Kicking his way down through the air to the ground.
So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be.
It’s when I’m weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood
Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs
Broken across it, and one eye is weeping
From a twig’s having lashed across it open.
I'd like to get away from earth awhile
And then come back to it and begin over.
May no fate willfully misunderstand me
And half grant what I wish and snatch me away
Not to return. Earth’s the right place for love:
I don’t know where it's likely to go better.
I'd like to go by climbing a birch tree,
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk
Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,
But dipped its top and set me down again.
That would be good both going and coming back.
One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.
I don’t think I cried, in the hearing. But in the remembering I always want to.
Please memorize poetry. Please recite it when you are moved to. Some folk might think it pretentious. But some people might have it etched in their bones thereafter for the length of their days.
i wish it was more common to memorize and recite poetry. i wish it wasn’t pretentious. i think it’d be nice for most ppl to have a favorite poem they know off the top of their head and even normal to know a few

#7 - Hanging Rock State Park - 5/6/2023
Stokes County / 1790 Hanging Rock Park Road, Danbury, NC 27016/ GPS: 36.4119, -80.2541 ..... PARK MAP
Fast Facts: 30 miles north of Winston Salem, this 9,011-acre state park is slightly west of Danbury NC, the county seat of Stokes County. It's located in the Sauratown Mountain range made up of monadnocks that are separated by the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. The highest point in this state park as well as the aforementioned range is Moore's Knob which rises to 2,759 feet above sea level. In 1936, the first 3,096 acres were donated to establish the park. Additional land acquisitions in the 1970s added the Lower Cascades and the infamous Tory's Den, a rock outcropping rumored to hide British Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. A final land acquisition in 2000 added the Flat Shoals Mountain. The Hanging Rock State Park Bathhouse was added to the National Register of Historic places in 1991.
Trail(s): Moores Wall Loop Trail - 4.86 miles / 2:20:31 - AllTrails + Strava
Hike Buddies: Dave Townsend
Hike Conditions: sunny, mid 50s at the start.
Comments: Located about 97 miles from the house, it took us about 1 hour 30 min to get there. I picked Dave up just after 7a and we were on the trail just after 8:30a. Dave purposely carried a heavy pack as he was/is in training for a massive 4-day, 54 mile hike in Glacier National Park this coming August with daughter Annabelle. Our hike started behind the stone bathhouse next to the lake parking lot and we opted to go left (clockwise) which elongated the elevation gain but made it more manageable. The first part of the loop was compact and carved through dense patches of rhododendron which helped shape the trail. This was pretty neat. About 1.5 miles into the hike, the terrain turned very rocky as we started making our ascent to Moores Knob. We went off path once or twice making it a little more interesting, but quickly found our way back to the trail. Somewhere between mile 2.5 and 3 we reached the pinnacle and climbed up Lookout Tower, a former fire tower where we were treated to a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding areas (Dan River basin and Virginia to the North, Winston Salem to the South, Hanging Rock Mountain and Greensboro to the East and Pilot Mountain, Elk Knob, Grandfather Mountain and Mount Mitchell (120 mi) to the West - picture 4). We took in the scenery for a bit before leaving and descending the 684 stone steps of the “endless staircase.” We were off the trail and back to our car shortly before 11:30. We finished with lunch at River Rock Cafe in Danbury before making the return trip home.
