Self-mastery could be anything.

When I think about self-mastery, it could be driving, washing dishes, cooking, or being self-sufficient.

Why self-mastery, you ask? I say, why not give yourself the credit you deserve? At the same time, what are we doing to perfect our gifts and share them with others?

Writing Dialogue 101

Dialogue is conversation, nothing more, nothing less. The catch is: diagloue is EDITED conversation. It must be more concise, purposeful and witty than the everyday sentences we speak, while sounding natural.

The Purpose of Dialogue

Diaglue is definitely a fiction elements that pops everything up and out. Thus, dialogue is going to have more impact than your normal paragraphs, in order to:

Characterizes/reveals motives

Sets the mood in the story

Intensifies the story conflict

Creates tension and suspense

Speeds up your scenes

Add bits of setting/backgronud

Communicates the theme

Matching the Dialogue to the Genre

The dialogue in a book should speak the reader's language. There is a type of voice that suits each genre/category of fiction, and we must understand what matches the reader expectations and rhythm of the plot we are writing.

Magical Dialogue

"Do not kill him even now. For he has not hurt me. And in any case I do not wish him to be slain in this evil mood. He was great once, of a nobel kind that we should not dare to raise our hands against." - The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkein

"As much as I want you and want to be with you and part of you, I can't rear myself away from the realness of my responsiblities." - The Bridges of Madison County, Robert James Waller

This is the language of The Hobbit, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

When writing literary and mainstream fiction (that is targeted at the general public rather than a target audience), we need to go with what sounds real, even with a magical setting

Science fiction and fantasy can be more unreal, i.e. things like "May the Force Be With You."

In romance, magical dialogue takes on a differen form. It's magical in that it transcends the way we talk to each other in normal society. Magical in that all of it makes perfect sense and is said in such eloquent langauge that we marvel at it while at the same time knowing that if we are left to ourselves, we would say something absolutely banal.

Cryptic Dialogue

"You know, the condom is the glass slipper of our generation. You slip it on when you meet a stranger. You dance all night, then you throw it away. The condom, I mean. Not the stranger." - Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk

This is the dialogue in literary and religious stories that dealw ith abstract ideas and vague concepts and has double meanings. Readers aren't meant to understand theses right away.

These bits of dialogue plant sublimnal messages in the reader's mind that help communicate the theme later on, ultimately making sense.

Cryptic dialogue is difficult to do well. If we're not careful, we'll end up sounding preachy, moralistic and dogmatic.

You need to be able to view the world in different perspectives.

Descriptive Dialogue

The literary, fantasy and historical story often relies on dialogue for worldbuilding (expplaining history, magic rules, etc.)

The author's goal in descriptive dialogue is to provide the reader with information. However, the character's goal cannot be sacrificed for the author's. Dialogue can still have tension and suspense and can be inserted into a scene of action so the story doesn't bog down while the readers get some info.

Shadowy Dialogue

In shadowy dialogue, the character's job is to keep the reader suspended in a state of terror/suspense. Then you periodically tighten and loosen the tension.

The key here is uncertainty. The reader cannot trust the speaker, so we're always questioning him, wondering whether he's speaking truthfully or is presenting the full picture.

Keep the tone as dark of possible, using action and background as supporting tools.

Make it cryptic, or even better, offering an omnious threat of what is to come.

Provocative Dialogue

This is the type of dialogue that conveys the theme, talking about the "universla truth" your book is trying to convey.

Readers like to be challenged in their thinking, provoked to consider other ways of thinking, and shaken up in their belief systems with a fresh perspective about the world.

Consider this example from To Kill A Mockingbird:

"...but there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal - there is one humna institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockfeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein, and the ignornant man the equal of any college president."

There is no way we can read this and not think about something that is bigger than our daily lives.

Make your readers squirm, and shock them out of their comfort zones.

Uncencored Dialogue

Uncencored dialogue in YA stories are of young people, but that doesn't mean it's filled with hip-hop words and slag.

While adults cencor themselves when they speak, teenagers haven't yet learned that skill so their dialogue is more raw, edgy and honest.

Readers of YA novels expect realism, so make it as authentic as possible. The last thing we want to is for our characters to be brash and honest, but NOT sound like they've just stepped out of Planet Way Cool.

For example:

"What if he doesn't like me back?" "You are too much of a chicken to do anything aboutit but mope."

As an adult, how often do you admit fear of rejection out loud to another, or call out your friend to her face? In YA-type of dialogue though, we can just write what comes into these characters' minds.

So that sums up the different types of dialogue. Consider the nature of your plot, what your readers and the genre of the story you are writing to choose an appropriate way for your characters to speak!

btw i was just looking at the transcript for 7.01 meet the new boss and I wondered if there's any reason cas (seemingly) went after motivational speakers? is there some american cultural context around new age motivational speaking I don't know of? is that connected to why dean says cas doesn't get irony? I've never really gotten that bit to be honest, and I'm asking since you just saw the episode and have been writing about it

RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.): A freak lightning strike on the heels of the fire that burned down the Center for Vibrational Enlightenment earlier today. Said a spokesman, "this tragedy represents the largest loss in New Age motivational speaker history". SAM: Motivational speakers? DEAN: Yeah, I'm not sure new Cas gets irony any better than old Cas. Of course, old Cas wouldn't smite Madison Square Garden just to prove a point. He is off the deep end of the deep end. And there's no slowing down.

I have no idea what "The Center for Vibrational Enlightenment " is or even if that's a real thing. It sounds kind of like something a new age cult would name itself.

I would say in general, Americans have a large degree of skepticism toward newly established religions. We have strong constitutional laws protecting people's rights to exercise their religious beliefs as they see fit. We like this in a general sense, but going along with this, religious organizations are treated as charities when it comes to taxation, and special provisions related to religious freedom make them difficult for the IRS to audit. This creates room for financial abuses. For example, somewhat infamously, the Church of Scientology uses religious tax treatment to hide shady shit. Things like special tax treatment also protect prosperity gospel churches (who tell their—usually very poor—congregants that if they simply keep giving money to the church, god will pull them from poverty. Meanwhile, the leaders enrich themselves with luxury items bought using the donations of destitute people and it gets treated as "charity" for tax purposes).

I guess we don't know that Cas was attacking all motivational speakers, but Supernatural does kind of make fun of motivational speakers more generally in "Lebanon" where Sam is basically mocked because there is some world in which he does a Ted Talk. Maybe culturally, we just tend to be skeptical of people who claim to have the answers to all our problems and assume they are just grifting.

We know Cas blew up a publishing house, so maybe he was just destroying all messages he didn't approve of. We see Cas go after a preacher at a church that pickets funerals, which is a nod to the Westboro Baptist church. I imagine this other dude from "The Center for Vibrational Enlightenment" was saying things Godstiel didn't approve of or maybe was just exploiting people. Cas also tells a homeless man that he punishes liars:

You're a true believer. People say I'm wrathful, but I only punish liars and those who forsake me. I am a just God.

As for the "irony" bit, my best guess is Dean means something like, “Cas is also pretending he knows the secrets of the universe and can guide us all to enlightenment while not knowing wtf he’s talking about”.

The night had come. The time has come for you to step back into that ring. Fight until either you were knocked out or killed. There was no other road to go down. Only one way and that was forward and going through Nate. Some sort of vengeance for what he had done to your girlfriend, who laid in a hospital bed unconscious to the mission had carved yourself. Laila sitting by her, watching the TV with urgency and dread gnawing at her bones. Lexi resting her hands on the girl’s shoulder to try and ease her own tension.

So, you sat in your locker room. Lights dimmed as you stared at the brick wall that held posters of you holding the world champion belt over your head. The “Undisputed Champion of The World” that had defended the belt for five straight fights in a row. That belt was gone, given to Nate Jacobs after your disappearance from the game. You had nothing to lose. There was nothing else that you could go through that could battle what has happened to you. A no one that grew up in a small town with no dreams. The only skill given to you by your father was fighting and you held onto that for dear life. This wasn’t about reclaiming the belt and getting back to where you were. This was all about beating Nate and displaying exactly what he had done to you by putting Maddy in that hospital.

“Y/n.” You turned your head, looking over your shoulder to see Alie standing by the door, rubbing his calloused hands together. The clear evidence of anxiety in his eyes. Although you trained day in and day out in the desert, he still held the worry about where this fight might go. He knew what you had planned for and he knew what drove you, but he had never kept in mind what that might result in with putting you in front of your toughest opponent.

Because if anyone was being honest, this was the fight of the century and Nate was clearly the top dog out of the two of you. But the greatest thing going for you was that you were the underdog. They always had a chip on their shoulder and it gave them the motivation to prove others wrong. But that didn’t change the fact that he was dreading this match. “It’s time, kid.”

You moved with your team down the tunnel. The crowd cheered in excitement at your return with the sound of your intro music playing through the speakers of Madison Square Gardens. All your defence fights had been fought out here. Yet, it didn’t change the goosebumps that stood up on end when you approached the ring. Feeling the pats on the back from fans or your team patting your shoulders, pumping you up for the war that would ensue in only a few minutes.

When stepping into the ring, there was dried blood on the canvas from the fights before. Something that made you more at ease with yourself. This is where you belonged. This is where you were meant to be. But your eyes were focused on Nate, standing at the opposite corner from yours. Eyes zeroing in on the man that did the same.

The two of you were brought into the middle with the ref announcing the rules that the two of you had heard countless times. Attention solely focused on one another and the separate goals one another had for this match. Neither of you touched gloves, only going to your corners and waiting for the first bell to ring. And when it did, you exploded from the corner, charging at Nate.

Punches landed and some were slipped by either of you. Doing your best to close the distance between the two of you and beating down on Nate’s body. Hopefully doing enough damage to give you a chance at a knockout. As you expected, his punches packed some weight behind them. Because although you worked tirelessly, he had been fighting while you were off. Nate was known for his power, but this was ten times what you had remembered after the infamous press conference. And before you knew it the bell rang, commencing the end of the first round.

“Good job, Y/n,” Lexi muttered, hands firmly planted on the back of Laila’s chair. Her knuckles were white with the death grip she had on the furniture.

“Great first round,” Ali praised. “Keep digging and working on his body. He’s trying to keep it close, so do the opposite. Sooner or later he’s going to fuck up and when that happens, hit him with the southpaw, alright?” You nodded, taking a sip of your water before he put your mouth in your mouth. Standing up from your corner, the bell rang starting the next round.

Each round passed and although you hurt Nate pretty badly by cutting up his eye, he was beating you. Your left eye was bruised and your right eye had a cut along your eyebrow. Nose leaking blood and teeth stained crimson. You were losing.

“What’s going on out there?” Ali asked, crouched in front of you as you shook your head, mind jumbled with thoughts. It was pounding. Everything was pounding and you felt ready to pass out. And judging by the look Ali was giving you, he could see it. “I’m calling this off.”

“No!” You exclaimed, silencing your grandfather. Taking ragged breaths, you shook your head sternly. “No. I’m not finished yet.”

For what felt like hours, Ali stared at you conflicted. He could see the damage that Nate was giving you right before his eyes. From the cuts to the fact that your head wasn’t fully here at the moment. Rightfully so, it scared the living shit out of him.

But he trusted you, he trusted everything decision that lead to this moment. “Everything that your father and I have taught you means jack shit right now, alright?” He said. “Take away the tactics and everything, boxing hasn’t always been about this.” He grabbed your wrists, holding up your gloved hands. “It's about your mind. About how you can outsmart your opponent and get the job done. I want you to do just that and beat this motherfucker. As long as you prove yourself out here, there is nothing anyone can take away from you. You made it this far and that is enough.”

His words sparked hope in you like gasoline to a small flame. Making you clench your jaw, nodding firmly before he patted your shoulder and stepped out of the ring. And when that bell rang, you gave everything you had. Slipping Nate’s punches and landing a few jabs and uppercuts noticeably surprised the man. Cracking him across the jaw and causing him to fall to one knee. Your breathing ragged as you paced on the opposite side of the ring. Watching Nate use the ropes to lift himself up whilst the ref did the count. By 6, Nate was on his feet talking to the ref, who cleared the match to continue.

From there, everything seemed to go downhill. Your vision was hazy. Either from the blood that stung your eyes or how puffy they were. Feeling Nate’s fists connecting and making your head feel like a hundred pounds. But you continued to stumble towards him, arms weak as they tried to defend your face. “Jacob is connecting with every shot and this becoming hard to watch, Max.”

Nate had pushed you to the corner, continuing to throw punches even when your eyes rolled back with each. Legs determined to keep you standing and to push through it. But the more you stood, trying to fight on, the more your mind was beginning to drift away and how shallow your breaths were becoming. And by the final punch at the sound of the bell, everything went dark.

Ali watched as Nate backed away, your legs giving out and body hitting the floor with a loud thud. He got up into the ring and tapped your shoulder. “Y/n, get up, kid!” He shook your shoulder, but there was no response. Rolling you over, your face was covered in blood with your eyes rolled back in your head. The stadium was at a standstill as your entire team surrounded you, trying to wake you up. But the longer you lay there motionless, the more the world grew quiet.

Laila held onto Maddy’s hand, tears streaming down her cheeks. Time ticked by as she could see the footage of Ali lifting your head into your lap as officials tried to figure out what was wrong. And the longer that process took, the more her anxiety grew. But when the broadcast was cut off, Laila felt something grasp her hand.

Turning to look and see Maddy’s eyes slowly flicker open. Lexi’s lips parted as she watched her friend glance around the room tiredly, finding her daughter. A smile on her lips slowly faded when seeing the two with tear-stricken looks directed solely toward her. Leaving a bad feeling to start brewing in her stomach.

The body of a U.S. activist and comedian was found with over a dozen stab wounds and dumped in a ravine after allegedly being kidnapped and held for ransom in Colombia.

Tou Ger Xiong, 50, an Asian American man from Woodbury in Minnesota, was in the country on holiday and had met up with a woman with whom he had connected with on social media when he was abducted by a group of men, according to reports.

Xiong, who was born in Laos and spent four years of his childhood in a refugee camp in Thailand, called a friend in Colombia at around 7 p.m. Sunday saying the men were demanding $2,000 (8 million Colombian Pesos) in cash for his release, according to local newspaper El Colombiano.

He also told his friend that he was being held at gunpoint.

Meanwhile, as he was being held captive, police said a woman was raiding his apartment at around 4:40 p.m. but when police arrived on the scene she managed to escape. It is unclear if this was the same woman he had met up with earlier. 

But before any payment could be made, Xiong’s body was found in the water of a ravine in La Corcovada, northwest of Medellín, with multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma, according to El Colombiano. He also had bruises caused by an apparent fall from more than 60 feet. Police say they are investigating whether the group decided to kill Xiong because he may have tried to escape captivity.

Eh Xiong, Tou’s older brother, shared some details about his brother's brutal death with Fox 9, saying that he suffered "blunt force trauma to the head" and that his captors "tossed him over a bridge."

His brother said police had caught one of the alleged kidnappers.

"We have full confidence in the Colombian police that they’ll find the people who did this to him, and bring them to justice," Eh Xiong said. "Rather than grieving over the loss of his life, we want to celebrate what he has done and what he could be doing to help the community moving forward."

Tou Ger Xiong’s family and friends told Fox 9 that he was the life and soul of the party and passionate about making positive changes to society.

The Carleton College political science grad dedicated his life to bridging cultures and speaking for those without a voice, his family told Fox 9.

"He would drive from here to Wisconsin to Milwaukee to Madison to help people [at] his own expense," Eh Xiong told KSTP. "He [did] that kind of stuff."

His family is now in the process of creating a foundation in his name, through which they hope to offer scholarships and assistance to those in need, Fox 9 reported.

Tou Ger Xiong is of Hmong descent, an indigenous group from East and Southeast Asia. In China, the Hmong people are classified as a subgroup of the Miao people.

According to the comedian’s website, his father served with the CIA and his family had to flee Laos after the communist takeover in 1975. He was a comedian, entertainer, motivational speaker and educator. He embraced the Hmong culture by educating his audience about his origin and helped co-found groups such as the Community Action Against Racism and the Hmong American Partnership. His website states he was married. 

He was named a Bush Foundation fellow in 2019. The foundation’s website states that he amplified the voices of his community and served as a force for change. 

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn,,released a statement on Tou Ger Xiong’s passing.

"This is a heartbreaking tragedy," Klobuchar said, as per Fox 9.

"Tou Ger was an incredible person who was constantly working to uplift his community. My office is in contact with Tou Ger’s family as they work to bring his body back to Minnesota."

Derek Warner is the youngest of three siblings, and a member of a close knit family. Their siblings are older than them and are like second parents to them since their actual parents are rather strict. Since their siblings are a good support system for him, they always have someone they can rely on when they need to talk, relax, or just want some company. In return, they try to be as helpful and responsible as possible to their siblings.

One of Derek's older siblings had an accident when she was young, which left her with a significant scar on her face. The wound eventually healed properly but was still permanently visible. This left a significant impression on Derek, who now felt unsafe around certain situations or areas because they knew bad things can happen. The presidents of a wide-ranging group of 13 universities are elevating free speech on their campuses this academic year, as part of a new nonprofit initiative announced Tuesday to combat what organizers call dire threats to U.S. democracy.

The Campus Call for Free Expression will take different forms on different campuses. The campaign, created by The Institute for Citizens & Scholars with funding from the Knight Foundation is designed to cultivate the freedom of expression on campuses and help students work together to find solutions to complicated, divisive problems.

“The national context of the deep political polarization, the inability of people to speak across difference in constructive and civil ways, it seems to me that colleges and universities need to be the institutions at the forefront of showing a better way to do that,” said Jonathan Alger, president of James Madison University, which is participating in the initiative.

The Institute for Citizens & Scholars first convened a group of college presidents in March 2022 to discuss how to prepare students to actively participate in democracy. Eventually, the presidents and schools committed to five principles of free expression along with new, on-campus programs that each school designed themselves. Those include new training at freshman orientations, faculty seminars and convocation remarks.

While not new, controversies around free speech at universities abound, from students protesting invited speakers to state legislatures targeting faculty tenure, and also reflect an increase in restrictions on freedom of speech more generally.

The participating schools include the University of Notre Dame, a private Catholic research school, Benedict College, a historically Black school in South Carolina, Rollins College, a small liberal arts school in Florida, and Ivy League member Cornell University, which in April announced that freedom of expression would be the theme for its 2023 school year.

Jonathan Holloway, president of Rutgers University in New Jersey and a historian of African American history, said he was motivated to join the initiative in part by what he called a growing deep disregard for American institutions.

“If I don’t speak up now on what I see that’s so concerning, if I don’t do this now, then when?” he asked, adding, "When I saw the Confederate battle flag marched through the Capitol Rotunda in January 2020, that’s when things shifted for me."

This September, Holloway will lead a freshman course that will examine the meaning of democracy and ask students to help design a program for the university to improve civic education.

For Rajiv Vinnakota, president of the Institute for Citizens & Scholars, there are two main reasons to focus civic education on college students. For many, their colleges will be the most diverse community that they’ve ever experienced and students have the potential to shift social norms as they enter public forums and start to participate in politics. He hopes that the collective commitment of these schools to fostering critical thinking and the exchange of ideas around contentious issues will encourage other institutions to join them.

“Are we able to get above the cacophony of these issues of free expression to be able to get people in general (and) leaders to be able to see that higher ed can and should play a leading and proactive and positive role in civic preparedness?” Vinnakota asked.

The Knight Foundation provided a $250,000 grant to the institute to convene the presidents and eventually other university staff in a series of conversations over a year and a half.

“We believe in the free exchange of ideas. We believe in an informed citizenry so that the people may determine their true interest,” said Alberto Ibarguen, president of the foundation.

The nonprofit PEN America offers training to colleges and universities around cultivating an exchange of ideas as part of its work advocating for human rights and free speech. In general, Kristen Shahverdian, senior manager of its Free Expression and Education program, said that showing students why protections for free speech matter is an effective way to win over them to hearing about opposing views.

“When students learn about how writers and artists around the world have been persecuted for their free expression, they understand the ramifications of squashing another’s speech,” she said in response to emailed questions.

James Madison University is partnering with the Bipartisan Policy Center to host a training for more than 4,000 incoming students this year to prepare them for free expression on campus. The training will ask the students to participate in real time through a survey application and the school will also use their responses to help design future trainings. JMU already surveys new students about their civic engagement and repeats the assessment in their third year to measure student learning.

Lucas Morel, a professor of politics at Washington and Lee University and chair of the Academic Freedom Alliance, said more universities and colleges should embrace a mission of cultivating the pursuit of knowledge through the airing of different ideas and arguments based on evidence. A college education is not just meant to help students get a job or gain knowledge, but also to help make them engaged citizens, he said.

“If we don’t do a good job of helping them be careful readers and careful listeners, it stands to reason that as citizens they won’t be careful listeners and careful expressors of their own thought," he said. "And it will be difficult for us to function as a self-governing society.”
