I made this for the lovely and kind @moorishflower based on a little snippet when the first beginnings of "Beautiful, Strange, and New" were just starting to be written. The scene is from the end of part 1 (chapter 9) which you can read here!

Morpheus' transformation really happened, only he took Hope by the hand, not Death. Now his duties are distributed between Hob, who guards Dreaming and returns escaped dreams and nightmares, and also guards the minds of people in a coma, in Limbo and Daniel, who has become a Prince of Stories and is responsible for children's dreams. Morpheus is still the Lord of Dreams and Nightmares, he creates them, he sends them, but he no longer needs to control everything .

Sandman Colouring Sheets/Craft Templates

I’m slowly coming around on the whole Daniel Hall thing. The Sandman Wiki basically says he’s just a nicer version of Morpheus (“they’re the same entity” with the same memories and abilities) which makes me feel a little better. And I’ve seen some really good art from The Dreaming: Waking Hours that’s just really pretty.

However irrationally, the white colour scheme still irks me.

Daniel could at least put on some eyeliner yknow.

Also I just want Hob to be happy

What’s in a Name

It was odd. How the cat kept showing up. There were no patterns to it slinking on by, demanding to be let in at all hours of the day. Generally, Hob didn’t interact with the strays that hung about. Morpheus, on the other hand, was obsessed with the cat. He had a soft spot for all the strays, but there was something about the fluffy white beast that he seemed particularly fond of.

“This wasn’t at all how we planned,” Hob muttered lowly as they made their way down.

“It does not matter where we speak to him. Just as long as we do,” Morpheus countered gently. “We must properly explain ourselves, as our previous overtures were ineffective.”

“What are we going to do though,” Hob whispered, voice catching as Daniel stepped out of his office, attention on the keys in his hand.“If he does not even want our friendship?”

Morpheus never liked sitting at The New Inn by himself. Like most public spaces it was needlessly loud. Jarring to his senses in a way most others never had to contend with. He used to wonder if he was normal if he would had enjoyed such establishments more, if he would had been into ‘average’ people things. Morpheus knew it was futile to ponder such thoughts. They only left him feeling a deep sense of inadequacy.

Hob would deny that he lunged across the table to smash their lips together roughly, knocking wine and beer to the floor in a loud crash, liquid soaking their shoes. He would plead the fifth, or whatever he had to, amongst the gentle ribbing of his staff as the story was told over and over again. He would absolutely be ignoring Morpheus’s smug grin whenever it came up, as he wasn’t liable for how it drove him crazy, forcing his boyfriend’s lips against his in a searing kiss every time. He deserved it, is all Hob’s saying.

Dreamling Week - Day 5: Ocean

Creature Comforts

He was the most exquisite being Hob’s ever seen. His tail had an iridescent tip, blending into a dark rainbow of color on the edges of his fin, like glistening oil in liquid. From there it trailed up into almost obsidian-colored scales. Hob wasn’t quite sure from this distance if that was the correct descriptor, as every lazy flop of the bottom half of his tail seemed to almost reflect a bluish color instead.

Terms and Conditions

Jerking from his hold Morpheus sat up, hair ruffled and eyes red rimmed. “There is nothing to refuse as it will not be given.”

Sighing Hob pinched his nose, trying to remember that Morpheus, barely a year and a half ago, was an emotionally stunted anthropomorphic personification. He had to remember to give him leeway, as he was still learning what it meant to be human. “Are you going to tell Daniel that?” Hob shot back in frustration. Sometimes though the kiddy gloves had to come off.

I realised the other day I'd done an accompanying piece of art for all my fics save Metamorphosis. Ofcourse this immediately needed to be rectified! It's been an absolute joy to return to this AU. I'm going to have to go back and revisit it someday with a sequel or a series of one shots. There's just so much left to play with!
