Mordenkainen: I wouldn't just kill 'em all at once, that's poor manners. You gotta toy with ‘em a bit, maybe torture ‘em, kill one of their number and give them hope to escape before you snatch it away and kill them all. That's how I'd do it if I were running the game.

Continuing to figure out what’s going on around Lake Zarovich involving a shit-ton of dead fish and a mad mage, this whole crew had quite the day:
- In the morning, Vol rustles up a dead sturgeon off the bottom of the lake (where it’s very cold and little decay is occurring.) Pazu and Milan have two very different opinions on the matter and the group had fish for breakfast.
- After running in circles for a bit, Izel chatted with a local for more info. Pulled a full on Kronk, and ms. squirrel was very helpful with directing us to a suspicious (and to her, very scary) elk. (Semechki from Milan’s pack, was offered in compensation, of course.)
- We found the remains of a family’s homestead, Mortimer is Mortimer (he surely didn’t mean to say that out loud.) Jedidiah Devorak lived his homestead dreams until things went bad - a little story in the scope of Zorovia’s woes, but still a hard one.
- Vol, who’s tracking sucked all day, finally got the memo on what we were looking for and immediately spotted the suspicious elk, which turned out to be the Mad Mage himself.
- Pazuzu does a frightening amount of damage.
- Maverick uses an animal summons for some delicious irony.
- With the group’s usual luck (thank the morning lord - or we could have been toast), we managed to incapacitate the Mad Mage, tie him up, and are now holding on to him with the hopes we can get him back to Valaki and better sorted out after his mind got a bit scrambled. Milan, contemplating the situation, tries to think of who this very powerful mage could even be, and comes to a terrifying conclusion (Milan is fine, he just talks like this.)
- This leads to shaving the old man (while he’s still unconscious) to see if he is truly is Mordenkainen. Izel and Vol are awakened in the middle of the night to... this.
Bonus, poor Kasimir took a face full of cone of cold in the fight with the Mad Mage (Vol and Izel took a bit of it, but shrugged most of it off):
(He’s ok, but looked forward to a good night’s rest.)
... I hope these D&D posts are coherent - I’m condensing a lot of info into one spot, some of it a bit out of order or missing a lot of detail or nuance because, well, we cover a lot of ground in a single session. I just aim for these to be funny and to show off our characters and problem solving, because I love them, and the care our DM has put into the campaign always shows.

I complain often about my growing list of wizards of the coast sins, but one i'm really never going to get over is making mord's tome of foes into """legacy""" content. Why. It's got the best/only description of the blood war, and devils and demons, which are used as enemies so often but rarely elaborated on in any kind of useful way outside of a module. Why isn't this still core content. Why is everyone at wotc a coward. UGH
#about the samcat#wotc sin list#dm life#dungeons n dragons#mordenkainen#mordenkainen's tome of foes#there is a chance they re-released it in the planescape stuff i haven't looked at super closely yet but hey! i love the complain either way

I for one, would love to see Raistlin get his shit absolutely rocked by Elminster. Probably thinks about punching Dalamar in his face during The Wizard Three meetings. Sure El could kick the shit out of Mordenkainen, but think of the guilt.
astarion having ultra shredded abs is admissible if boring because he's a mentally ill ken doll gymrat on peds, wyll having muscles is logical because he has a sword and shit even though his arms are stupidly thin and he would not be on a low body fat % like that (75kg wtf?). gale though? who does nothing besides cast spells and try to hump your leg? him and halsin can only be saved by this mod

Tales from the Great Library
Extra-dimensional Spaces
A few days later (Day 4) Andros and Khazpar meet outside the House of Rest at high sun, to share a light repast before their afternoon martial practice. Neither have seen hide nor hair of Hyram or Teddy all day -- unusual, indeed, considering the quartet have become something of a clique ever since the Bath House Incident. The missing pair appear as just luncheon concludes, however, looking tired and dusty. Teddy explains they've been up half-the-night searching for a missing scholar.
As he and Hyram grew up in the Great Library, they explored all its labyrinthine passages, vaulted collection chambers, and tucked away staircases ages ago -- so, the logical choices to rouse out before dawn when Missing Matreous needed finding. But, after nine hours’ searching, nothing!
Highly unlikely anyone would disappear from within the Great Library, especially one of the Avowed. Become lost in its three-dimensional maze of collections? Certainly. Happens all the time, in fact, but to vanish without a trace? Never. Too many people about as well as arcane safeguards, preventing that. Sorcerers and wizards can't even teleport in or out but have to use established teleportation circles in the Spire. Even invisible persons and objects have their illusions stripped away whenever they pass through one of the Great Library's archway, and there's well more than a thousand of those!
Teddy insists the only way in or out, other than passing through the public gate, is by transforming oneself into a bird and flying over the rooftops. Perhaps Matreous did something of the sort in response to an urgent message he'd received, choosing a small-swift form no one would notice. But, why depart without a word to anyone? And, why leave his personal possessions scattered about the study chamber he'd been using?
What's more, Khora Kharran directed a sending to Matreous' family at mid-morning, confirming the Sage hasn’t returned home. So, Missing Matreous has presented the perfect "locked door" mystery, baffling all and sundry, alike. The Sage's disappearance also raises serious questions about the state of the Great Library's security.
Hyram: We were just steppin' over t'give the chamber a look. Maybe you Big Folk'd care to join, make yourselves useful for a change? Poke in the high corners, sneeze out the dust mephits. That sorta thing.
Fistandia’s Permanent Magnificent Mansion (FPMM)
Within the study chamber Missing Matreous habitually occupied, Andros and Teddy have little trouble translating marginalia penned onto the pages of Extradimensional Spaces. Andros speaks the word “scepter” aloud, causing a magical doorway to be revealed in one wall – access to Fistandia's Permanent Magnificent Mansion!
Certain they've solved the Mystery of Missing Matreous, four men open the arcane portal and step through with Hyram leading. Sure enough, the gnomish Sage, himself, stands smack in the middle of a foyer beyond, stranded in the extra-dimensional space three days ago. Over-eager to say scepter and explore Fistandia's astounding creation Matreous neglected to finish studying her hand-cribbed notes, so never learned the command word to re-open the door from the inside.
He recognizes Brother Teddy on site, of course, and charges the young Brother with securing FPMM for research by preparing its treasures for removal and cataloging. Fortunately, he's brought a halfling along, to poke into the low-dirty places, and a pair of human giants, for all the heavy lifting. Matreous, himself, will take the statuette he's discovered already and withdraw, keeping the doorway open from the other side.
The moment Matreous departs, however, back to his favorite study chamber, the gnome bursts forth a blood curdling screech and the door slams tight!
The Magnificent Mansion
M5 - STUDY Hyram befriends a cat.
M4 - EXERCISE ROOM Hyram tries to take the magic broom, starting a battle!
M3 - LIBRARY Attacked by a swarm of animated books! Hyram pockets the jeweled letter opener. Teddy spots Mordenkainen's book lettered R and (Int 20 Natural) remembers its mate, I, in the Study.
M6 - KITCHEN Hyram discovers cat heaven! Meet homunculi Cumin and Coriander. Andros (Int 18) realizes from their presence that Fistandia is still alive somewhere.
M7 - PANTRY
M8 - DINING ROOM Mimic chair attacks! Hyram confiscates silverware and service as payment for nearly being eaten by an ugly stick of furniture.
M9 - ARBORETUM Cumin and Coriander warned them about the faerie dragons here, so four men are more-or-less prepared for the creature’s antics -- although not their euphoria breath. Following four spectacularly missed saving throws, what follows is very the reason faerie dragons say, "Tee hee!"
M14 - Trophy Room Mordenkainen Book Y
M15 - BEDROOM Mordenkainen Book E
M11 - LABORATORY Mordenkainen Book T
M12 - PLANETARIUM Khazpaar figures out the telescope puzzle.
M13 - CHAINED LIBRARY Animated, chained books attack! Andros claims the dagger +1 and Martial Attack Techniques. Mordenkainen Book L.
M17 - ALCHEMICAL LABORATORY Teddy claims the reagents for the Great Library (50 gp.) Hyram and Andros split the potions of healing. Mordenkainen Book B.
M18 - SUMMONING ROOM Attacked by a quasit!
M19 - PRESERVED MENAGERIE Crawling claws nearly throttle Hyram!
Having explored the entire mansion Teddy deciphers the command word liberty, re-opening the door and permitting egress. In the study chamber four men find Matreous hideously murdered, and are attacked by Fistandia's imp. Followings its destruction Teddy summons Adjutants to take charge of the gnome's body and FPMM.
Next day, Hyram sells the jeweled letter opener, silverware, and silver service for 40 gp. Teddy sells the alchemical supplies for half-price, 25 gp. They split the earning with Andros and Khazpar; 16.25 gp, each.

Can’t wait for another Mordenkainen book to come out to update the other species for the 2024 rules, knowing WOTC it’ll probably be another 50$. But whatever it’s not like I bought the last 2
#i dont really care about the discourse around the 2024 rules I’m going to play it either way#but making folks pay 50$ (hardcover) for updated rules while your in the process of making those rules outdated is kinda shitty imo#dnd#dungeons and dragons#d&d#talking#MOTM came out 2022 I’m not sure when one dnd was announced but it was definitely in production before that#sorry I didn’t mean to sound that ungrateful I’m just tired#from having buying 2 different books and probably a 3rd soon for the updated changeling rules#dnd 2024#mordenkainen

I was looking into Mordenkainen lore because I didn’t know anything about him and he’s not in any books outside of dnd books.
The most interesting thing I learned is that he is apparantly Gary Gygax’s (one of the creators of dnd) original character. He also used to have more hair
