On November 22nd 1888 the Sword, reputed to be that of Sir William Wallace was taken to The National Wallace Monument, where it has been on display more or less ever since, but not without indecent!
It is believed that the Wallace Sword remained at Dumbarton Castle from 1305, when Wallace was imprisoned there after his capture. However, there is no record of the Swordâs whereabouts until 1505 when it was first mentioned in the Accounts of the Lord High Treasurer of Scotland ordered for its handle to be repaired. The Lord High Treasurerâs accounts for that year during the reign of James IV, shows that there was the entry: Item, ( for )
âbynding of ane riding sword, ane rappyer, and binding of Wallas sword with cordis of silk, new hilt and plommet.â
So when it was agreed that the sword would be taken to Abbey Craig the people of Dumbarton were none too pleased with this and let it be knownâŚâŚ
âThe Dumbarton Town Council feel aggrieved at the removal of Wallaceâs sword from the castle to the Wallace Tower on Abbey Craig, and have resolved to remonstrate with the War Office authorities, and ask that the historic weapon be returned to the place where it has lain for between five and six hundred years.â
Charles Rodgers, a principle fundraiser for the Monument, had been trying to move the Sword to the Monument since its completion, but his request was refused by the Colonel of the Royal Artillery at Dumbarton Castle in 1875 and it wasnât until 1888 that the War Office agreed to transfer of the sword.
The Wallace Sword has always stood for freedom, and is sometimes referred to as Freedomâs Sword. Wallaceâs legacy has inspired audiences around the world. Wallace, and his sword, have become symbols used by individuals and groups to bring attention to their cause.
In 1912 suffragette Ethel Moorhead smashed the sword case in the National Wallace Monument to draw attention to the womenâs cause for the freedom of political expression.
The Wallace Sword was stolen from The National Wallace Monument on the 8th November 1936 by Scottish Nationalists at Glasgow University, who later returned the sword after realising the distress the theft had caused.
The sword measures 5 feet 11 and 1/2 inches length; the blade varies in breadth from 2 1/4 inches at the guard to 3/4 of an inch at the point. The weight is six pounds, or three bags of sugar!
Historians cast doubt about the authenticity of the weapon, one points out that the person who owned it would have to be over 7 foot tall to use it, detailed analysis point to it being made up of several pieces from different centuries, none as early as the 13th century. Some say that the sword design is too modern for the time of Wallace. One historian, recognising the changes and the subtle details, has referred to this sword as the âghostâ of William Wallaceâs sword.
Whether the sword is genuine or not does not matter one jot to me, it is symbol of the Freedom that Wallace fought for during the first Wars of Scottish Independence.
There is a full account of the proceedings on November 22nd 1888 on the Clan Wallace web site here https://clanwallace.org/.../about.../the-wallace-sword/

The Worldâs Largest Booming Prairie Chicken statue was conceived in the mid-1970s when Rothsay, Minnesota, was designated the âPrairie Chicken Capital of Minnesotaâ on June 10, 1975.
To celebrate this title and attract tourists, the community decided to build a statue of a booming prairie chicken.
The statue was designed and constructed by artist Art Fosse, with significant support and funding from the local community. It was unveiled on June 15, 1976, and has since become a beloved symbol of the town.
This impressive statue stands 13 feet tall and 18 feet long, weighing around 9,000 pounds.
Made of concrete, it depicts a greater prairie chicken in the act of booming, with its air sacs inflated and head thrust forward in a display of avian prowess.
The vibrant colors and detailed design make it a striking and memorable landmark.
You can find the Worldâs Largest Booming Prairie Chicken statue in Rothsay, Minnesota, situated on the west central plains.
It is conveniently located off Interstate 94, between Fergus Falls and Moorhead, about 200 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
The statue is set in a small park that offers a view of the surrounding plains, making it a perfect spot for a picnic and some sightseeing.

Neil Juhnke: From Seed to Shelf Sugarbeets by Grower-Owners at the Michigan Sugar Company
The sweet, delicious, sugary saccharine â Sugar, is a carbohydrate that can be found naturally in many food products such as fruits and vegetables.Â
The sugar is extracted from naturally grown foods and undergoes a manufacturing process to produce the sugar that we have in our kitchens and pantries. This sweetener is also used as a preservative, fermentor, flavoring agent, modifier, etcetera.Â
White sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar, granulated sugar, and liquid sugar are some of the kinds of manufactured sugar products sold at our local shops that we purchase.Â
Sugar is an ingredient that is added to almost everyoneâs daily meals and snacks in varying quantities and kinds. This saccharine and carbohydrate is an energy source for our body which delays tiredness and increases low glycogen levels thereby giving us that extra boost on consumption.Â
Many factories in the Food and Beverage Industry manufacture, produce, and retail sugar. Did you know that the worldâs main naturally grown food products used by manufacturers to produce sugar are Sugarcane and Sugarbeets?Â
Yes, factories choose either of the two products and process them for sugar extraction. Â
There are yet other factories that process sugar from naturally grown fruits and vegetables but the canes and beets are the main chosen foods.Â
Therefore in this article, we will talk about a company that was started in the early 1900s and now is the third-largest sugarbeet-manufacturing company in the USA. Michigan Sugar Company is currently led by CEO Neil Juhnke. The factory/plant is established in the Uptown Bay City area, in Michigan since its harvest initiative in Sugarbeets from the year 1906. The manufactured and processed sugarbeet is sold to the commercial, retail, and industrial sectors. Striving with the purpose of âmaking life sweeterâ, the Michigan Sugar Company and its CEO â Neil Juhnke are on a mission to âcreate growth and opportunityâ.
The President and Cheif Executive Officer Embracing Life at the Michigan Sugar Company:
The President and Chief Executive Officer at the Michigan Sugar Company is Neil Juhnke. Neil was appointed and came into office taking on this huge role in May of 2023.Â
Neil has since been embracing his new life at the company after having been closely involved in agricultural sugar processing his whole life. Before the Michigan Sugar Company, Neil worked at the American Crystal Sugar Company located in Moorhead, Minnesota from the year 1990. As an effective leader, the CEO immediately stepped down to the fields and spoke with the farmers and growers.Â
After having a good layover of the business model, operations, factory, and the fields alongside several meetings over the first few weeks, Neil envisions a bright future for the Michigan Sugar Company and is working towards the goal to âstrengthen and stabilize the companyâs foundation, creating a platform for sustainable growth into the next centuryâ.Â
Under Neilâs leadership, knowledge, and expertise in the sugar industry and field, the Michigan Sugar Company currently sees an annual production of 1.2 billion pounds of sugar being manufactured and sold under the Pioneer Sugar Brand and the Big Chief Sugar Brand from the Uptown Bay City factory in Michigan alone.Â
About the Michigan Sugar Company â One of the Oldest Sugar Companies in the USA:
The Michigan Sugar Company was founded in the year 1906 when 6 sugarbeet companies merged. The company became a grower-owned business in 2002 and after merging yet again with the Monitor Sugar Company in 2004 â became the USAâs 3rd largest sugarbeet-producing factory located in Michigan. The state is also one of the only 11 other states in the country where sugarbeet is grown, manufactured, processed, and brought farm-to-table.Â
The company now has over 865 grower-owned plants and harvests around 140,000 acres of sugarbeets annually. An annual production of over 1.2 billion pounds of sugar is produced by around 20 different counties in the state and is then sold to commercial, retail, and industrial sectors where the companyâs profits are 100% owned by the local farmers.Â
The sugarbeet factory in Uptown Bay City, Michigan alongside its current President and CEO is on a mission to âcreate growth and opportunityâ by empowering and engaging employees and grower-owners, establishing safe work environments and sustainability in work practices, by adopting efficient and innovative grower-owners and facilities, and by building on trust. Together they aim to increase production and yield, happy and satisfied customers, stronger communities, and the companyâs bright future in sugarbeet-manufacturing.Â
Encouraging the company to immerse itself into the community, a âLocally Grown, Locally Ownedâ initiative was adopted where âoperating regionally and giving back locallyâ through student recruitment and training sessions. The company also donates over 100,000+ pounds of sugar annually and awards 12 scholarships. With the âgiving backâ mindset strongly instilled, 2 community Bay City gardens have been constructed and 100+ events have been sponsored to unite and build a much stronger community. With the Michigan Sugar Companyâs core values instilled in driving excellence, pride in their roots, integrity, compassion, and trust â the company sees a bright future in agricultural cooperatives and community.

A Hockey Life by Matt Cullen
Part 1
One of the worst parts about growing up was having to make a malt.
Donât get me wrong, the ingredients are pretty simple. And I loved drinking them. But if I had to make a malt, that meant one thing: I lost a hockey match on our outdoor rink.
My father, Terry, built an outdoor hockey rink in our backyard. Me and my two younger brothers, Mark and Joe, spent every spare minute we had on that ice. Weâd come home from school, change and hit the rink. Every birthday party was on the rink. We hooked up lights onto the roof and would play until it was dark and all we could see were the bright Minnesota stars above.
All Iâve ever known in my life is hockey. My earliest childhood memories were on that rink in Virginia, Minnesota. Thatâs all I really wanted to do as a kid, was be on the rink and play with my brothers and friends. There was nothing better in life. I know itâs the same story for a lot of guys, but thatâs how I fell in love with hockey.
If we werenât spending our night in the backyard, we were usually attending one of my fatherâs high school games. From my youth until I was 10 years old, my father was the hockey coach for the Virginia Blue Devils. And I imagined myself being a Blue Devil one day. But when I was in the fourth grade he took over as coach of the Moorhead Spuds.
(I remember being so mad. I didnât want to be a spud. I wanted to be a Blue Devil! They had such a cool logo. What even is a spud? A potato? Weâre going to be potatoes? Itâs so funny thinking back at how upset I was at the time).
I still remember going to watch my dad coach. My friends and I collected programs and would tear out the pages. If our team won the game we would count down the final seconds and throw those pages into the air like confetti and celebrate like we just won the Stanley Cup. In between periods my brothers and I would play mini sticks with the team doctor in the hallway.
When we got home there was always one final chore for the night. We shoveled off the outdoor rink and flooded the ice so that it would be nice and solid for the next day. On the nights before a big game or tournament Dad would bring out a bucket of hot water. It was like we were Zamboni-ing it. It felt like big time. The ice would be super smooth after. The stakes were high.
And those tournaments could get pretty intense. My father, my brothers and me would mix teams for a 2-on-2 matchup. The losing team had to make the winning team malts and serve them to the winners.
So if I was making the malts, it meant that I had lost. But if I had won, then the losing team had to make malts for me and my teammate. The only thing better than the sweet taste of victory was the sweet taste of drinking that malt.
Part 2
In Minnesota, high school hockey is king.
We didnât have NHL on the Fly or ESPN Hockey. The NHL was another planet. To kids growing up in Minnesota in the 80s, playing for your high school team was the dream.
My favorite moments were when my dad would let me in the locker room. I was in awe of the high school players and wanted to be them one day. For me, it was the equivalent of my children being in the locker room with Sid and Geno.
To us Minnesota kids, high school hockey was the NHL. And playing for the state championship was our Stanley Cup. Â
Every year my family would drive three-and-a-half hours south to the St. Paul Civic Center to watch the tournament, whether my dadâs team was in it or not. I remember it had clear boards and was filled with 15,000 people watching. It was the highlight of my whole year. It was like a holiday.
My best memories of my high school career at Moorhead was playing in that tournament. For a kid growing up around high school hockey, that was the ultimate. I played in the tournament during my sophomore, junior and senior years. Unfortunately, we never won the title, but we were runner-up twice and finished third the other year.
What sticks out most was my senior year. I was playing with my brother Mark and we had a good team. That year I started thinking that I was good enough to maybe play in college and maybe, someday, the NHL. We made the state tournament again that year. We faced Rochester in the semifinal and the game went into double overtime. I scored the game-winner to get us to the final, though we didnât finish it off in the last game of the season.
Losing was tough. Obviously, I wanted to win. But I think losing in those games was good for me in the long run. Losing in the finals and never quite getting there, I felt like there was maybe more I had. I felt that this isnât my big moment. Thereâs maybe more ahead. I donât know why I thought that. Iâm not sure where it came from. But going through my head during that defeat was that my big moment was still to come.
Part 3
I jumped over the boards at Maple Leaf Gardens and skated to the faceoff circle to square off against Hall-of-Famer Mats Sundin. It was October of 1997. Two years ago I was just a high school senior.
Now a member of the Anaheim Ducks, I was about to skate my first career shift in one of the NHLâs most historic venues. I lost the faceoff, a defensive zone draw. The Maple Leafs had a shot on net and the coach called me off the ice. It was a short shift, but Iâll never forget it.
Everything was so new to me. I was living in California on my own, the farthest Iâve ever been away from home. I was balancing all these new experiences from dry cleaning, being on the road and keeping up with an apartment. Not to mention learning how to play in the NHL.
Being a rookie in the league was a lot different back then. I was really quiet my first year, if you can believe that. We had an older group and the rookies were treated like rookies. We only spoke when spoken to. I came home from the rink one day and called my brother and I said âYou wonât believe this, but I didnât say one word at the rink the entire day. I was there for five hours, didnât say one word to anybody.â
My welcome to the NHL moment happened on Day 1. Teemu Selanne walked into the room and took out his skates. He hadnât skated the entire summer and his skates had rust on them. He threw them on and was the best player on the ice from the first day. I was thinking, 'This is crazy. This is a whole new level of hockey.â I was on a line with Teemu that first year and he scored a career-high 52 goals - but believe me, it was no thanks to me.
I spent most of my four seasons in Anaheim skating alongside Teemu and Paul Kariya. And they taught me so much about the game.
Teemu was such a fun-loving, easy-going guy. He loved the game. He just played for fun and enjoyed it. Paul was super intense and serious, the ultimate pro. It was super cool to see both sides of them.
But the thing I learned the most that year was from Paul, who was also my roommate on the road during my time there. He taught me how to be a pro. He was super structured and detailed, trained like crazy. He showed me how much you have to commit, how much you had to put in to being a pro if you wanted to be good at it.
Paul would stretch every night before going to bed, so I started stretching every night. I think that was one of the biggest reasons I was able to stay healthy throughout my entire career and play until I was 42 years old. I stretched throughout my whole career.
Coming out of high school I was pretty green. I didnât realize that in an 82-game season you should be working out. I didnât do things like that.
I always think back to spots in my career and people that came across my path, I think itâs for a reason. I learned so much from Paul, who remains a close personal friend to this day. Without his guidance I donât think my career would have gone where it did.
Part 4
My hockey career hit a crossroads in the summer of 2005. I was 28 years old and worried that my career might be coming to an end. My last year in Anaheim and the next year-and-a-half with Florida were unmemorable. Then the NHL lockout happened. I knew if I had another bad season, retirement might come earlier than I anticipated. You can fall off the map pretty quickly in the NHL.
Then came a dilemma. Two teams called me with a contract offer. One was my hometown team, the Minnesota Wild. The other call came from Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford.
Minnesota was my hometown and was offering more money. Carolina seemed a much better fit and I already had built a relationship with Peter Laviolette, who coached me with the U.S. at the World Championship.
The chance to come home to Minnesota seemed too good of a dream to pass up. Going to Carolina would require a huge risk and huge leap of faith. I talked with my wife Bridget and we prayed. Something told me to take the risk and go to Carolina.
We had an interesting group. There were some unknowns like Eric Staal, Justin Williams, Andrew Ladd, even myself. There were also some older, veteran guys like Ray Whitney, Cory Stillman, Rod Brind'Amour and Brett Hedican. We had Martin Gerber in goal and a rookie, Cam Ward, as the backup.
Sports Illustrated picked us to finish 30 out of 30 teams. But everything came together in a way that I never experienced. We got off to a great start and things just worked out. I scored 25 goals and had one of my best years. We finished second in the East and added guys like Mark Recchi and Doug Weight at the deadline.
We opened the playoffs against Montreal at home and lost the first two games. It was awful. I was thinking our great season was coming to an end. We switched goalies and Cam stepped in and he was lights out. He played unbelievable and won the Conn Smythe.
We beat Buffalo in Game 7 to get to the Stanley Cup Final and faced Edmonton, a Cinderella team that was an eighth seed in the West. We had a chance to win the Cup on home ice in Game 5, but lost in overtime. Then we went to Edmonton and got pounded.
Game 7 was back in Carolina. It was the most fun game Iâve ever played in. The crowd didnât sit the entire game, they stood the whole time. It was intense. I hadnât experienced that before. I was nearly 30 years old, but I felt like a little kid.
We battled and held on for a 3-1 win, and you canât even believe itâs actually happening. After Aaron Ward handed me the Cup, I did a quick twirl. There was a sold-out crowd in the building, but when I looked up all I could see was the Minnesota stars and the hanging lights on that outdoor rink growing up.
All those games I played with my brothers and friends, pretending to be playing for the Stanley Cup, and there I was, holding this trophy high above my head and living that dream.
Our families joined us on the ice for the celebration. And I remember all those times when things didnât work out. Not winning Minnesotaâs Mr. Hockey as the best high school player (with all due respect to Erik Rasmussen, of course). Not getting drafted in the first round.
And I remembered that feeling of losing in the state final my senior year, when I believed that my big moment was still to come. And this was it. This was the big moment I was waiting for. We reached the pinnacle of the hockey world: Stanley Cup champions.
And no one will ever take that away from us.
But what I really took away from that group of guys was leadership. There were a lot of good leaders on that team, and they all werenât wearing letters on their jerseys. You see it takes a large group of leaders on your team to win.
And for some of those older guys, this was their only and last chance to win a Cup. You see how fleeting your opportunity is for winning a championship. They fought so hard for it. They put so much into it. It was eye-opening to see how much it meant to them.
I know Iâve said it before, but really do believe everything happens for a reason. Instead of playing it safe, taking more money and playing in my home of Minnesota, I took a chance on Carolina. I went into that year thinking it could be my last one in the NHL. And I ended it by lifting the Stanley Cup.
Part 5
There are few things I loved more than coming home after a game and flooding my own outdoor rink. I would drive home, put on my warm clothes, fill a thermos with some wine and go outside and drink it while I flooded the rink.
By that time I was back in Minnesota, having signed a contract with the Wild. My chance to come back home came true after all. And it seemed like the perfect time to go home, play out those three years, retire a Wild and live in Minnesota.
By that time, I also had a family. Three young boys of my own: Brooks, Wyatt and Joey. And for the first time in my life, it was my job to build the rink in the backyard. I had never done it before, but it was so fun. I felt like I was my dad.
I wanted to give my boys all the things that I had growing up, except now Iâm the old guy flooding the rink. They were still very young in those years. Joey had just been born a few months before (I actually watched him being born on Skype from my hotel room while I was playing with Ottawa in the playoffs against the Penguins).
When I skated on that outdoor rink, it was the first time I had done so since I left my home in Minnesota in 1997. I was just as excited as the kids to be on the outdoor rink. It was the coolest thing. It certainly brought back a lot of memories, but mostly I felt my life coming full circle.
That included sharing in the Cullen family tradition of attending the Minnesota high school tournament. We actually saw a young Jake Guentzel skating there for Hill Murray on that ice sheet. I definitely didnât think Iâd see him scoring 30, 40 goals in the NHL alongside Sidney Crosby one day. Itâs funny how it works out.
But those three years in Minnesota, it was really about family. We spent holidays at home with my boys and the entire family. It was a really special experience getting to play at home. I really enjoyed it. It gave the kids the experience of growing up on the outdoor rink.
It was during that time in Minnesota that they started to really love the game. For me as a dad, that was the ultimate to be able to share it with them.
Part 6
The phone didnât ring on July 1, 2015, the annual start to NHL free agency. I had just finished two great years in Nashville, but my future was still unclear. I still wanted to play even at 38 years old, but I was pretty sure that it was the end.
That day came and went without a call. Then the next day came and went. Then the next week. Then the next month. Even so I continued to train and keep myself ready just in case an opportunity came up. At least I would be in shape and could make a decision for myself. I didnât want it made for me because I was out of shape.
One day in early August, the phone rang. It was Jim Rutherford.
Bridget was out for a run. When she got back, I said, 'Youâll never guess who just called.â And she goes, 'Was it Jim?â It was crazy. She just knew.
As usual with these decisions we talked for a while and prayed on it. But we felt like we kept getting these opportunities and it would be crazy not to jump on it and give it a try. We took that leap and went to Pittsburgh.
The rest speaks for itself. We won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships the next two years, the first team to do so in two decades. It was a historical run.
I just pinch myself and think about how close it was to not happening. Those were probably the best years of my whole career and life with the Penguins. Going through all that with the boys and Bridget and that group of players, the whole organization, everything was perfect. It was beyond anything I could have ever imagined.
I certainly couldnât have imagined it the way we started that first season, though. We had such a terrible start that nobody had any expectations. I remember my son Wyatt coming to me at Christmas and crying because we had dropped out of the playoff picture.
Then Mike Sullivan came and we made a bunch of changes. Things started rolling from there. It was a unique group. It was a special group. That first year everything came together, and we were having so much fun. We were like a machine, all the way to the Cup.
The second year it was the same group, but it was a totally different year. We had to really lean on each other the most that year. The expectations were high going in and it brought our group closer together. It was rewarding because we stuck together through so many ups and downs.
Iâll always have the Cups and those memories. But when I think back on those times what really stands out is watching my boys with those guys. A lot of the guys would come over to my house, Chris Kunitz, Nick Bonino, Sidney Crosby, Ian Cole, Marc-Andre Fleury, Phil Kessel, Carl Hagelin. Weâd all have a couple glasses of wine and the guys would play mini sticks with the boys (the most intense games were between the boys and Patric Hornqvist; I know youâre shocked).
That, for me, was the coolest thing ever to watch. It was like the boys were part of the family. Theyâd come in the locker room after practice trying to avoid doing homework. Theyâd steal gum. One time, Joey hid in Ian Coleâs change stall. He jumped out and scared the crap out of him.
Those are the memories Iâll treasure, probably more than anything. Just seeing them around the room every day. I know the boys will remember it forever.
Part 7
Iâve been in a constant state of almost-retirement for the last few years. But coming into this last season, I knew that no matter what it would be the end. Even if we had won the Cup I would have been done. Playing those last few years really gave me the clarity to know this was it.
It was an emotional time, but I knew it was coming. It just felt right and I was really at peace with everything when it was over.
I felt like it was only right to retire in Pittsburgh with everything that the organization had given me and done for me. Iâm so happy I came back and finished my last year in Pittsburgh. I wouldnât trade that last year for anything.
Iâve spent a lot of time reflecting. More than anything Iâm just so appreciative of everybody that helped me along the way. Looking back on it there are people that came into my life at the right time to lead me one way or teach me something. Itâs not an easy thing to play for that long of a time. It takes so many people to step out of their way to help you, and I needed a lot of help!
And the friends Iâve made along the way, whether it was Eric Staal or Mike Fisher or Ryan Suter or Paul Kariya or the guys in Pittsburgh. There are just too many to name and Iâm sorry if I left anyone out.
I just hope I had a positive impact with my teammates wherever I went. I tried to be the best teammate that I could be throughout my career, and be there for other people, try to be a good example.
But the biggest lesson Iâve learned from my 21 years and 1,500-plus games in the NHL is that you have to take a risk.
By my nature, thatâs not me. Iâm not a risk-taking guy. I think youâre given certain opportunities in life and if youâre willing to take a risk and throw yourself in all the way then special things can happen. For me, that was the case. We leaned on our faith a lot and took leaps of faith. Thank God we took those chances and opportunities where He was sending us.
I remember waking up in the middle of the night many times these last few years thinking, 'What am I doing? Iâm 40 years old. I donât think I can play another year in the NHL.â After each time I signed the past few years I woke up in a cold sweat, not sure if I could still play.
Honestly, if I could play forever, I would. All I know is hockey. Iâve never done anything. I never wanted to do anything else. I donât know anything else.
I may have skated my last shift, but Iâm not hanging up my skates just yet. After all, there is a sheet of ice in Minnesota that needs to be flooded every night. Thatâs where youâll find me, sipping my thermos. Maybe, even using the hot water to get the surface nice and smooth so the next day me and my three boys can have our own little intense 2-on-2 tournament with a malt on the line, skating in the open air, on the outdoor rink, under the hanging lights, under the Minnesota stars.
For me to be able to take them to the rink and play with them on the ice, as a dad, thatâs as good as it gets. I couldnât ask for more. Thatâs what I had as a kid and to be able to share it with my kids is my greatest joy.
Itâs funny. When I was a kid, I used to hate making those malts. Nowadays, itâs not so bad.

On November *22nd 1888 the Sword, reputed to be that of Sir William Wallace was taken to The National Wallace Monument.
*And yet another with differing datesÂ
The swordâs history is as significant as that of the Stone of Destiny. It is said that after the capture of Wallace, the sword was taken to Dumbarton Castle and kept for almost 600 years. Despite protests from the people of Dumbarton, in 1888 the sword was installed in the monument with great pomp and ceremony.
The people of Dumbarton let it be knownâŚâŚ
âThe Dumbarton Town Council feel aggrieved at the removal of Wallaceâs sword from the castle to the Wallace Tower on Abbey Craig, and have resolved to remonstrate with the War Office authorities, and ask that the historic weapon be returned to the place where it has lain for between five and six hundred years.â
In 1912 the case containing the sword was broken by a suffragette called Ethel Moorhead to highlight the struggle to obtain votes for women, and it was stolen in 1936 and again in 1972 but on each occasion it was safely recovered and returned.
The history of the sword itself has been questioned, most recently in 2020 Dr David Caldwell, former president of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, said that it had ânothing to doâ the leader of the First War of Independence, who lived from 1270 to 1305.He described the sword as a ânot very good example of a two-handed 16th Century swordâ which was acquired in âdesperationâ to link the monument to Wallace.
To me it is secondary, just like the aforementioned Stone of Destinyâs history is disputed, the Wallace sword is more of a symbolic symbol for Scots.Â
Information promoted by the National Wallace Monument said that âit is believedâ that the Wallace Sword was left at Dumbarton Castle from 1305 after Wallace was imprisoned there. A mention of âWallaceâs swordâ later appears in accounts of the Lord High Treasurer of Scotland in 1505;
......at the command of James IV., the sum of twenty-six shillings, equal to about thirty pounds at our present money, was paid to an armorer for binding a riding sword and a rapier; also for the âbinding of Wallas sword with cords of silkâ, and providing it with âane new hilt and plometâ also with a ânew scabbard and a new belt.âÂ
While the rapier and the riding sword are named as being simply repaired, the Wallace sword is described as adorned with trappings of silk; also as having been furnished with the specified additions of a new hilt and pommel, a new scabbard and a new belt.
Ken Thomson , of Stirling District Tourism, which runs the National Wallace Monument, said the sword was âheld in high respectâ during the 1800s when Scotland experienced a surge in patriotism.
When it was brought to Stirling in 1888, Provost Yellowlees said: ââŚno true Scotsman could look upon this sword without having anew a feeling of gratitude to the patriot who wielded it, and who bled and died to secure for his country that liberty which to him was dearer than lifeâ.
The quote in the first pic is by Sir Walter Scott, which surely means he believed in the swords history?  The sword measures 1.68m and weighs approximately 3kg.
The last pic is of interest, the information tagged to it reads âSwords of Scottish Heroes Exhibited at the Laying of the Foundation Stone of the Wallace Monument at Stirling 1. Sir William Wallace's 2. King Robert Bruce's 3. Sir John De Graeme's 4. Sir Richard Lundin's 5. The Black Douglas'sâÂ
Iâve posted about all these before except Sir Richard Lundin, the sword is said to be of the same era as The Wallace sword, and that he carried it into battle at The Battle of Stirling Brig, however he was one of those that chopped and changed sides and was in King Edwards Army.Â
He advised Sir Hugh Cressingham, Edward Iâs appointed Lord Treasurer of Scotland, that to cross Stirling bridge itself would result in certain loss. He has been attributed with the following speech.
âMy Lords if we go on to the bridge we are dead men; for we cannot cross it except two by two, and if the enemy are on our flank, and can come down on us as they will, all in one front. But there is a ford not far from here, where we can cross sixty at a time. Let me therefore have five hundred Knights and a small body of infantry, and we will get round the enemy on the rear and crush themâ
Cressingham ignored the advice of the skilful soldier Sir Richard, and the battle was lost. After this Sir Richard fought with Wallace and is believed to have become a good friend. Sir Richard is listed as one of the Nobles of Scotland who appointed Sir William Wallace to the position of Governor of the Kingdom. They fought together at Falkirk. The sword of Sir Richard de Lundie, laird of Lundin, friend of Wallace, was taken to the ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the Wallace Monument.
This sword is now at Drummond castle, ancestral home of the Earls of Perth, at one time descendants of Lundin of that ilk.
Such is the unsure history of this era it is interesting to note that âLundieâ is described in Blind Harryâs depiction of the battle of Stirling bridge as being on the side of the Scots.
The hardy Scots with heavy strokes and sore, Attack the twenty thousand that came o'er. Wallace and Ramsay, Lundie, Boyd, and Graham, With dreadful strokes made them retire - Fy, shame!
I have tried to find a real photo of the Lundie sword, but to no avail, Drummond Castle being a privately owned and only the gardens are open to the public.

COVID-19: Advice for Pregnant Women | Advice for pregnant women
COVID-19 And pregnancy!
The Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists from the UKissued this information Source : RANZCOG website.
Pregnant women do not appear to be more susceptible to the consequences of COVID-19 than the general population and there is no evidence that the virus can pass to a baby during pregnancy.
The Real Momâs Guide
There are currently no data suggesting an increased risk of miscarriage or early pregnancy loss in relation to COVID-19.
At the moment there is no evidence that the virus can be carried in breastmilk, so it is felt the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh any potential risks of transmission of coronavirus through breastmilk.
There is limited evidence about managing women with coronavirus infection in women who have just given birth; however, there are no reports of women diagnosed with coronavirus during the third trimester of pregnancy having passed the virus to their babies while in the womb.
Professor Mark Umstad, Director of Maternity Services at the Womenâs, reassures women who are pregnant.
âAs the impact of COVID-19 extends through our society, we want to reassure pregnant women that there is still no evidence that they are more susceptible to infection than non-pregnant women, and that there is no sign that their unborn babies can be infected,â said Professor Mark Umstad.
âThe Womenâs is safe place to be for women giving birth. And while there are extra precautions in place, such as screening upon entry, you will recieve the care you need when you come to our hospital.
Melt 7 Pounds Every 7 Days
âDoctors, nurses, midwives and hospitals across Victoria are working together to ensure the safest possible outcomes for pregnant women and their babies during this understandably stressful period for them.â
Information on feeding your baby.
Taking advice from the World Health Organization and other breastfeeding authorities, the Womenâs continues to advise women to establish and maintain breastfeeding and to promote skin-to-skin contact at birth for all women and their babies
Anita Moorhead, senior lactation consultant and clinical midwife at the Womenâs, says that as with other peak times for illnesses (like the seasonal flu), mothers are encouraged to continue to breastfeed â but with careful attention to hand hygiene and how they direct their coughs and sneezes.
What Is The Paleo Diet?
âItâs important that breastfeeding mothers are paying close attention to advice on reducing your risk of coronavirus,â said Anita Moorhead.
âWith current advice, if you are a suspected or confirmed that a mother has COVID 19, we would encourage you to wear a mask when feeding or expressing breast milk for your baby, have your baby in a cot about 1.5 metres away from mother when not feeding and, where possible, have someone else help with the care of the baby.
âWe know that breastfeeding and providing breast milk is one of the best things to help prevent many infections for babies, so our advice at the moment remains the same: keep breastfeeding and keep up with the careful handwashing. Know that you are caring for your baby well and we will help you to do that.â

Formula feeding.
âWhere a mother needs to use infant formula, strict hand washing and careful attention to sterilising of bottles and making of infant formula is so important,â added Anita Moorhead.
âDue to recent issues with food availability, if the infant formula that you usually use for your baby is not available, then itâs okay to use another formula.
âMake sure it is infant formula suitable for babies from birth to 12 months and to ensure careful attention to the directions on the can. Be aware alternative brands may have different size scoops in the tin and use different amounts of water.â

Reducing your risk.
Practice good hand hygiene â wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and dry with paper towel or a hand dryer. Alcohol based hand rub is an acceptable alternative.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing or cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow, and encourage others to do the same. Make sure you put the tissue into a bin and then wash your hands afterwards.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unclean hands.
Where possible, keep at least one metre away from people who have a respiratory illness and/or is coughing and sneezing.
Avoid shaking hands with others.
Pregnant women should be considered a vulnerable or at-risk group, however, information and advice to the general public apply equally to pregnant women.
At this time, pregnant women do not appear to be more severely unwell if they develop COVID-19 infection than the general population.
For women who are trying to conceive, or who are in early pregnancy, there is no evidence to suggest an increased risk of miscarriage with COVID-19.
There have been a handful of recent reports suggesting that the virus may pass from the mother to the baby (vertical transmission). However, this is very early, preliminary data, and has not been confirmed. There was no evidence of harm to the babies.
There is no evidence that cesarean section or induction of labor is necessary to reduce the risk of vertical transmission.
Some babies born to women with symptoms of COVID-19 have been born prematurely. It is unclear whether coronavirus caused these premature births, or whether it was recommended that the baby was born early for the benefit of the motherâs health and to enable her to recover.
At the moment there is no evidence that the virus is carried in breastmilk and, therefore, the well-recognized benefits of breastfeeding outweigh any potential risks of transmission of COVID-19 through breastmilk.
Healthy Diet Plant-Based Diet
What effect does coronavirus have on pregnant women? There is no evidence to show that pregnant women will be more severely unwell than other healthy adults if they develop coronavirus. It is expected that most pregnant women will experience mild or moderate cold or flu-like symptoms. Cough, fever, shortness of breath, headache, and loss of sense of smell are other relevant symptoms.
What can I do to reduce my risk of developing coronavirus? The most important thing you can do is to wash your hands regularly and effectively. Use soap and water and wash for at least 20 seconds.
As a precaution, you should follow government advice about social distancing, stay away from public places and avoid anyone who has symptoms suggestive of coronavirus. It is still considered necessary for pregnant women to go out for essentials, such as food shopping, exercise and to attend antenatal appointments.
If you are in your third trimester (more than 28 weeksâ pregnant) you should be particularly attentive to social distancing and minimise any contact with others.
Lifestyle Changes to Improve Your Cholesterol
What if I canât work from home?If you canât work from home and you work in a public-facing role, talk to your employer about what steps can be taken to minimise your exposure.
If you are in your first or second trimester (less than 28 weeks pregnant), with no underlying health conditions, you should practise social distancing but can continue to work in a public-facing role, provided the necessary precautions are taken.
If you are in your third trimester (more than 28 weeks pregnant), or have an underlying health condition â such as heart or lung disease â you should work from home where possible, avoid contact with anyone with symptoms of coronavirus, and significantly reduce unnecessary social contact. Talk to your employer if you are in or approaching your third trimester.

What do I do if I think I have coronavirus? If you are pregnant and have either high temperature and/or a new, persistent cough, you should stay home for at least 7 days. Do not go to your GP surgery, pharmacist or hospital. You do not need to call NHS 111 to tell them that you are staying home.
You should let your midwife or maternity unit know about your symptoms, especially if you have any routine appointments in the next 7 days.
What can I do to protect myself from COVID-19?Practicing good hand and cough hygiene and avoiding people who have recently been overseas, if you can, are the best ways to avoid infection of COVID-19. Itâs also important that everyone in your household and immediate family does the same. If you have other children, teach them about the importance of good hygiene and how and when to wash their hands.
wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer (e.g. before and after eating, and after going to the toilet)
cover your coughs and sneezes with tissues and dispose of them straight away; wash your hands afterward
cough or sneeze into your (flexed) elbow
cough away from other people
stay more than 1.5 meters away from people when out in public, if possible
If you are currently working, you can ask your employer what they are doing to protect their staff. Many businesses are providing guidelines for how employees should behave in the workplace; for example, by encouraging good hygiene, limiting meetings, and giving staff the option to work from home.
You should also practice âsocial distancingâ, which includes:
avoiding crowds and mass gatherings where it is hard to keep a reasonable distance from others (about 1.5m)
avoiding small gatherings in enclosed spaces
trying to keep 1.5m between you and other people where possible (for example, when out in public)
donât shake hands, hug or kiss
stay away from vulnerable people, such as those in aged-care facilities or hospitals, babies or people with weakened immune systems
Looking after yourself in isolation
Everyone in Australia is being asked to stay at home unless you need to go out for essential reasons, like grocery shopping, medical appointments, or going to work. During this time, itâs important you still eat well and get some exercise to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
This is also a very stressful and worrying time for people and whether you are a first-time mum or already a parent, not having your usual support network around you can make it hard. Keep in touch with your family and friends through phone calls and videos and stay connected on social media with groups that can help support you during this time.
If you are struggling or need to talk to someone, there are a number of places you can go for support.
The simple lifestyle shifts in the Eat Sleep Burn ugly belly fatâŚ
What happens if I get COVID-19 while I am pregnant?Women who get COVID-19 while they are pregnant are expected to experience mild to moderate symptoms, similar to having a cold or the flu. But because of the changes that happen to a womanâs body during pregnancy, your symptoms will be monitored very closely. Most women will make a full recovery without any risk to your unborn baby.
Can I pass on COVID-19 to my baby while I am pregnant? There have been some very recent cases that may suggest COVID-19 could be passed from mother to baby (called âvertical transmissionâ). However, this is still to be confirmed and is still in the early stages of being studied. Previous experience with other respiratory illnesses suggests your baby will not be harmed or at risk of any ongoing problems.
Should I still be going to my antenatal appointments?Having regular check-ups during your pregnancy is important to monitor the health of you and your baby. However, it is understandable that during this time you might be concerned about going to your GP or hospital. Before making any changes to your appointments, itâs important that you speak to your doctor first.
Your doctor may recommend less frequent visits if you and your baby are healthy, or they might be able to offer telehealth consultations (video call) for some of your appointments.
What should I do if Iâm pregnant and recently returned from overseas?Anyone returning to Australia from any overseas country is required to isolate for 14 days. Providing you show no symptoms of being unwell after 14 days, you are free to carry on as usual. If you do show any signs of illness, call your doctor or the hospital where you plan to have your baby. Advise them of your symptoms and travel history and follow their instructions.

Those Who Stay The 50th Anniversary
âThose Who Stay The 50th Anniversaryâ is a historical fiction series based on a true story and draws on first-hand interviews with the players and coaches of the 1969 Michigan Football program.
3RD PIC -Â Jim Otis scores first for Ohio State.
Dana Coinâs foot meets the ball â The Game is on.
The first drive of the game, Ohio State drives the length of the field but Michiganâs defense holds on 4th down and 1 when Henry Hill stuffs All-American fullback, Jim Otis, inches short of the first down.
After a Michigan punt, Ohio State All-American fullback, Jim Otis, does score first. They miss the extra point. 6-0, Ohio State.
Michigan comes right back and Garvie Craw â Otisâ counterpart â plunges in from the 3-yard line. PAT is good. 7-6, Michigan.
OSUâs All-American QB, Rex Kern, throws 22 yards to WR White for a touchdown. They miss another PAT. 12-7, Ohio State.
Michigan comes back â largely on a 28-yard run by Billy Taylor, a draw play directly past a weak side fire by OSU All-American Jack Tatum. A few plays later, Craw scores again. 14-12, Michigan.
After a 60-yard punt return by senior safety Barry Pierson, Michigan scores again when Don Moorhead, The Warbler, runs it in from the 4-yard line. 21-12, Michigan.
After OSU misses a field goal, Michiganâs counterpart kicker, Tim Killian, makes one. 24-12, Michigan.
The next two Ohio State drives are ended by senior safety Tom Curtisâ interceptions, including one in the end zone.
Halftime. Michigan leads 24-12.
In the locker room, the normally reserved and quiet defensive coordinator, Jim Young, pounds on the blackboard, over and over. âThey will not score again!!â
He was right.
Barry Pierson has three interceptions in the second-half. Woody benches All-American QB, Rex Kern, but his backup is intercepted as well, by Michigan LB Thom Darden with 1:34 left in the game.
Don Moorhead QB sneaks it to the ground and itâs over.
Final score: 24-12. Michigan.
The mighty Buckeyes had fallen in what papers all over the country would call âThe Upset of The Century.â
Michigan had shocked everyone but themselves.
Bo, hat long gone, hair askew, steps to the center, a game ball in his hands, his eyes full. The room gets quiet as he studies his team.
âCongratulations, men. You stayed â and youâre champions.â
The room explodes!
6TH PIC -Â Fritz Crisler letter
Fritz Crisler, the legendary Michigan coach and athletic director, didnât make it to Michigan Stadium for the game that day in November 1969. He had fallen ill. But he watched the game from his hospital bed and wrote the following letter to Bo sometime that evening:
My Dear Bo,
I have had a lot of football thrills in my lifetime, but the masterpiece you and the Michigan team turned in this afternoon will stand prominently in the list. In game preparation against seemingly overwhelming odds, I have never seen a team better conditioned, technically, physically and mentally, to reach such a high inspirational peak, as you and your staff had those kids this afternoon. It was the greatest upset I have ever witnessed. The achievement will have a long life in the contribution to the richness of Michiganâs enviable football history and tradition.
Even callous me shed a few uncontrolled tears from sheer pride and joy as the game ended. My very best to you and the team, alwaysâŚalways.
Fondly,
Fritz Crisler
Bo framed the letter and hung it on the wall by his film screen in his basement so he could see it all the time. That 1969 season and win over Ohio State would set the stage for the next 40 years of Michigan Football. Bo kept his promise for the next 20: every single player that played for him won a championship. Many also went on to become doctors, lawyers and heads of corporations. And all of them would look back on that season, and that game, as one of the greatest achievements of their lives.
