YEAR ONE (Moons 0-12)

Hey guys! I've decided that it makes sense for me to record allegiances and a general summary for each year in TurtleClan, so folks who are catching up on the story have a quick way to get up to date if they want to, and to keep track of who is alive when. First year info is under the cut!

ALLEGIANCES (as of Moon 12)

SUMMARY OF YEAR ONE:

After a terrible storm at sea wrecked the ship that they were travelling on, a small group of kittypets led by the former ship's cat, Shell, made it safely to shore. Not knowing exactly where they were or what dangers might face them, not to mention if there were any other survivors, the cats elected to remain near the area where they first came ashore, building a camp amidst the shipwreck after the storm subsided. While many of the cats decided to take new names to reflect the great change in their lives, Dustjump, an old kittypet unwilling to let go of her past decided to keep her name.

The survivors were quickly joined by a mysterious local tom named Tidechaser, quiet and stoic and somewhat distant, but a vital source of knowledge in this new land they found themselves in. Before long, the survivors had the beginnings of a real community. Shell, the de-facto leader, decided to pair young cats up with teachers so that they could learn to navigate their new home safely. Tidechaser was given the first apprentice to train, a tom named Foam who was already nearing adulthood. Shortly after, Shell began to oversee the training of a young tom named Splash, and assigned her young second-in-command, Sand, to train another young tom named Current. While Current and Sand initially clashed, they quickly came to care deeply for one another and grew into a very effective duo.

After a few moons of living on the beach, the survivors of the wreck decided to establish a territory for themselves, not so much to defend its borders, but to give their group boundaries in which to roam so no cat would stray too far and get themselves into trouble. While establishing these boundaries, the survivors encountered a familiar face: a badly injured tom named Sergio that had been on the ship with the rest of them. After being helped back to camp, Sergio revealed that he and another cat, Margo had come ashore further up the beach, and had believed themselves to be the only survivors for moons. While Margo did her best to help Sergio, who was suffering from a spinal fracture caused by a broken piece of mast hitting him in the storm, she was eventually killed by vicious rogues who drove Sergio out as well, not deeming him worth the trouble of killing. Upon hearing the story of the other survivors, Sergio decided to take a new name--Brokenmast-- to represent the great change in his life, and to dedicate himself to healing from his terrible injury. As moons passed, cats grew and changed. Foam and Splash both finished their training, and Foam began to oversee the tutelage of Spindle, the last kit from the wreck. Dustjump began to be plagued by strange dreams of a starry cat named Pearl who had died in the wreck. She initially thought little of it, but after hearing stories from Tidechaser regarding local legends, she began to wonder if they were true, and eventually shared her strange visions with him, though neither of them knew what it meant.

When Current eventually completed his training with Sand, he requested to have a second part added onto his name, as he believed he had changed quite a lot since his initial apprenticeship. Sand suggested the name Currentheart, reasoning that Current's heart was the strongest aspect of who he was. Everything seemed to be going well for the survivors: Foam briefly fell ill with greencough, but recovered under Dustjump's care, and Brokenmast's back eventually healed. Spindle completed her training and took the name Spindlefleck, eager to finally be equal to the other cats in the group. But the good fortune couldn't last. While out on patrol with TIdechaser, Currentheart died saving Sand from a charging boar. The death of their young friend shook all of the survivors, making them question whether or not they had any chance at a life here on the shore. On the night of Currentheart's vigil, when spirits were at their lowest, Dustjump received a sign: hundreds and hundreds of baby turtles hatching, following the reflection of starlight off the water to the sea. Remembering some of Tidechaser's old tales, Dustjump found meaning in the sign, guiding the other survivors to the starlit sea, where two starry cats appeared to them: Pearl and Currentheart. The two starry cats revealed that the strength of the community the survivors had built allowed the spirits of the dead to remain tethered to the world of the living, able to touch it under certain circumstances. After deciding that the survivors had become far more than a simple group of cats brought together by circumstance, the spirits dubbed them a Clan, appointing Shell as their first leader, and Dustjump as their first Healer. Dustjump suggested that they should be called TurtleClan, to honor the sign that led them to the spirits, and thus TurtleClan was officially founded. Shortly after, any cat that lacked a second part to their name decided to take one, to honor both Currentheart and the founding of TurtleClan.

✨GlitterClan - Year One✨

Settling into the crystal caverns, GlitterClan immediately set to trying to keep things amiable with the many Clans they shared the mountain with, although they avoided interactions with the ominous ShadowClan as often as they could. Mostly they did their best to look after their own well-being, training the apprentices, catching prey, and helping Leapdapple stock her supply of herbs.

Right away the Clan was growing, as they met Yellowlaurel, who joined them without hesitation after her strange skills caught the eye of Paleswoop. As the year went on, the kits and Apprentices of the Clan had to grow up fast, many graduating their training at only 11 moons old, every paw needed to keep GlitterClan alive. By the end of the year, there were no more young cats to train, and GlitterClan is more aware than ever of the trials and tribulations of living in their new home. Dogs, badgers, and foxes fill the valleys and slopes, making hunting dangerous, but rewarding. So far, no one has gone hungry, and their herbal stores have cured all illnesses (no outbreaks!) and soothed all wounds. By year's end, they were able to accept even more strangers into their midst, proving that any cat can survive the harshest of circumstances with the right Clan.

Bonds were tested, twisted, and strained this year, but also strengthened permanently, and even with the ghost of old loyalties haunting the Clan founders, GlitterClan is more united than ever and ready to face another eventful year in the mountains.

As you can see, there are some new names/faces, and a pair missing... let's see what this year was like for each cat and go into some of the more important personal interactions and events:

Summitstar - Leader 44 Moons | 9 lives Summitstar began the year with hope for the future, anxious and excited in equal measure to see his Clan grow and thrive. He took care of Pigeonpaw, building the young cat's confidence and soothing his worries, guiding him into a warrior worth a sense of pride. As the year began, Summitstar found himself bickering frequently with Leapdapple, the pair often not seeing eye to eye. Leapdapple wanted to offer her guidance, but Summitstar did not want the senior cat from his old Clan to still see him as a kit. Both were aware they weren't getting anywhere or helping their Clan by fighting, so in mid-Leaf-fall the pair took a long walk and discussed their misunderstandings, and rededicated themselves to becoming better friends.

Summitstar watched both Seedpaw and Pigeonpaw grow into more confident warriors, and when Seedwhisker took on her warrior name and a full role in the camp, Summitstar found himself relying on his former scouting buddy very often from day to day and forming a friendship with her; his high expectations of the younger members of his Clan were being fulfilled. He also felt his confidence and trust in Paleswoop growing, in spite of the Deputy's fraught year, and he is forever grateful for her and feels incredibly vindicated in his choice to have her by his side. She is a dear friend, and he is very lucky for her loyalty.

His year is ending bitter-sweetly after overcoming a nasty bought of Greencough this Leafbare. Most of his Clan has survived and is doing well for themselves, overcoming dangers and sickness and building their futures together. However, he lost both a close friend and a respected senior warrior this year. He has also found himself struggling to remember the Code and his own sense of responsibility and decorum, as a long entrapment with another cat in the branches of a tree in late Leaf-fall stoked the beginnings of love in his heart for arguably the worst possible candidate for his affections. Summitstar must put the Clan's well-being above his emotions if they're to survive their second year, and that means letting go of this extremely ill-advised infatuation... right?

Paleswoop - Deputy 49 Moons | Weak Leg - Permanent Condition Paleswoop has had a difficult, yet affirming year. Their first moon in the mountains, she found herself pursued by one of the dogs that live in the Twoleg Place nearby, but when she turned to fight, a strange and beautiful she-cat stepped in. Paleswoop was impressed by this she-cat's ability to talk to and befriend dogs, and brought Yellowlaurel back home. Her confidence was bolstered by brokering this valuable addition to her Clan, and she betrayed her own cautious nature and strayed too close again to the Twoleg borders, resulting in her leg being caught in one of their traps. She was able to twist free, but the leg was badly damaged, and would never be as strong as it once was.

It took her all of Greenleaf to recover, and afterwards she promised Summitstar she would make up for lost time and worked twice as hard with him to help the Clan. Summitstar was grateful, but patient and understanding, and around him her nervousness could be set aside in favor of a sense of calm security. Paleswoop began to find herself falling in love with her leader, but knew he did not feel the same way, and so kept it to herself. Some of her faith in him dwindled when she was the one to catch frostbite while they went out hunting, and it was not him but Yellowlaurel who came to check on her each day, worried and comforting, and the two she-cats have been growing ever more fond of one another.

As she recovered, she found Iciclesight also frequently making time for her, the tom she remembered as a loner really trying to be there for the young cats he was so fond and protective of. She is feeling unsteady going into a second year without his comforting presence beside her, but will look after Silverspeckle and make him proud.

Leapdapple - Healer 119 Moons Leapdapple has had a good, if quiet, year as she took on her unfamiliar new position. She has come to enjoy her role as healer in GlitterClan, especially when her Clanmates come to her and ask for advice, complain about their duties, or lament about their love lives. One of the first things she set up was a burial spot for the Clan which, thankfully, went unused until Leafbare. Iciclesight was all too happy to help her, and as they worked they buried their old hatred there, and realized they had more in common than they realized, including a mutual but unfulfilled attraction. Leapdapple took her new role seriously, and the Code said she could not have a mate or kits, and she was getting too old for all of that, anyways. Instead she poured her love and energy into her Clan, and found herself feeling similarly motherly to the young she-cats from her former rival Clan, especially Paleswoop, who spent so much of the year under her care.

Leapdapple has come to truly love the young Deputy as if she was her own kit. Iciclesight saw this love, and came to ask if she would ever want to have kits of her own- of their own. She rejected him on the basis of the Code, and after they argued fiercely, he left camp, and never came back alive. She buried him in the rosemary patch they'd cultivated together, and she will spend the new year always wondering what could have been if she'd said yes.

Thankfully, she will not be feeling too alone in the coming year, as a wandering healer has joined, and GlitterClan and Leapdapple can take full advantage of a more experienced cat's knowledge.

Gardenia - Healer Female | 49 moons | Former Loner - Joined Moon 11 Nervous | Ghost Sense Gardenia spent her life as a lone healer who wandered the mountains. In the middle of Leaf-fall she met Pigeonpelt while he patrolled the border, and while the thought of joining a Clan intrigued her, she declined to join, instead returning to her wandering ways.

Summitstar was intrigued by the stories of her skills and connection to souls of the dead, though he hesitated to add new mouths to feed in the cold half of the year. However, after the loss of Seedwhisker, and the constant threat of illness in the cold, GlitterClan sought Gardenia out. She was alarmed to be surrounded by so many strong Clan cats, and their promises that that strength would keep her safe was not a true comfort. Still, not every Clan on the mountain is as welcoming as GlitterClan, and so, hesitant but hopeful, Gardenia agreed to follow them home. She immediately took offense at the disorganization of the herb stores, and has made herself very quickly at home in the healers' den, helping the older but less experienced Leapdapple swiftly cure several cases of white and green and yellowcough.

River - Warrior Male | 107 Moons | Former Kittypet - Joined Moon 9 Responsible | Unnatural Senses & Talented Swimmer River grew up a happy, if rather often neglected kittypet. When he fell sick with yellowcough, his housefolk took him into their monster and left him out in the forest, driving away and ignoring his yowls for them to return. It was this anguished calling that led Summitstar and Paleswoop to finding him. They rushed him back to their camp, where he has recovered from his illness and is trying to find his place among the Clan.

Gardenia thus far has been the most welcoming, as they are both outsiders who have joined around the same time, and she cared for him the most while he fought his illness. Yellowlaurel has also made a good first impression, being a shining example of a former kittypet who has adapted well to Clan life. Summitstar is not very fond of River, pressuring him to earn his stay and not simply take advantage of their care and prey. River is trying not to let the young leader's obvious dislike ruffle his fur, and is doing his best to prove he does deserve to have a place in GlitterClan, and perhaps even a proper warrior name of his very own.

Yellowlaurel - Warrior Female | 59 Moons | Former Kittypet - Joined Moon 1 Compassionate | Great Storyteller Yellowlaurel grew up on this mountain, her twolegs allowing her to roam the gardens and the wilds beyond with reckless abandon, and she learned much in her short time walking the little world around her home. She learned of the Clans, learned the stories of the Stars, of the Moss Cats, and the hummingbirds, learned the language of the Dogs (the very vocal companion her twolegs kept in their house was a great help in this), and fell in love with the wilderness and the legends spread by the seven Clans that made their way back to her eager ears. All she had to do was know how to listen.

When she encountered Paleswoop ready to swat and scratch at the yappy dog from Yellow's home, she leaped in, calming both the feral she-cat and her canine friend, and sending him home. Paleswoop was amazed by this ability to speak to dogs, and asked if the kittypet would be willing to join their Clan and help keep them safe from the dogs along their borders. Yellowlaurel jumped on the opportunity to finally be welcomed into one of the Clans she'd heard so much about, and when she learned the story of GlitterClan's founding, she was honored to share in the shaping of its history. She introduced herself with a warrior's name, and followed Paleswoop home.

There, she quickly became a beloved and invaluable member of the Clan, her wisdom and knowledge of the old stories a pleasant surprise to the older Clan cats, and within only three moons she found herself mentoring young Coniferpaw. Silverpaw found the she-cat's stories silly and foolish, and chose to ignore them, and Yellowpatch was convinced that no kittypet, no matter how many mangled stories she'd stolen, belonged among Clan cats. He said she could never truly respect the Code, and insisted she was soft and lazy, no matter how often she proved him wrong.

Undaunted, Yellowlaurel passed her tales down to Coniferpaw, teaching him about the metal-eyed Moss Cats who stole anyone who slept in their mushroom rings, and how StarClan saved the valley from fires by changing the embers into hummingbirds. He... mostly listened, at least when he wasn't trying to appear tough in front of Silverpaw, and Yellowlaurel is very proud to see him grown into a fine young warrior.

With no apprentice to train, Yellowlaurel is focused mostly on getting closer with her Clan, explaining her story and the struggles of an outdoor pet to Summitstar, and nurturing a growing fondness for Paleswoop, the cat who believed in her and saw her potential. She is hopeful that next year their bond can only grow stronger, and that perhaps she will have the chance to be a teacher again.

Pigeonpelt - Warrior 18 Moons Grumpy | Great Kitsitter & Great Storyteller Pigeonpaw began his year feeling hopelessly overwhelmed, afraid he'd never really be strong enough to fight for his new Clan, and would dishonor his ancestors. Summitstar, his mentor, was by his side every paw-step, constantly comforting him and promising that Pigeonpaw was no failure, and no disappointment. Soon, Pigeonpaw could even see his own worth, realizing that through the guidance and support of his Clan and mentor, he had become a skilled hunter and could trust in his own instincts. His insecurity melted away to a deep sense of loyalty for his Clan, that quickly turned to a more grumpy disposition as he realized that the rest of GlitterClan was still treating him like the self-deprecating kit he used to be.

But not Summitstar.

Leaf-fall brought a day of hard rain, and Summitstar and his former apprentice ended up trapped in a tree together for hours, waiting out the storm. As they sat together, they talked, about their ancestors, their past together, their present, their friends and foes, their fears, their hopes, their futures... Summitstar spoke to Pigeonpelt as an equal, with pride and respect; he had watched Pigeonpelt become a capable and grown warrior and understood the strength and struggle such a journey had taken. By the time they made their way back to solid ground, Pigeonpelt's mind was racing almost as fast as his heart. He knew it couldn't be, a love for a cat much older, much higher ranked, than him, let alone his former mentor! But still, for the last 4 moons, Pigeonpelt cannot stop thinking of that day in the tree, and wondering what opportunities the new year will bring them, if any at all.

Conifershade - Warrior 14 Moons | Mangled Tail Oblivious | Great Mediator & Good Swimmer Conifershade has had to grow up a lot this year, not only literally, but emotionally. He started the year a bit nervous for his training, hearing the self-deprecating Pigeonpaw lament that "I was just as useless as Coniferkit at saving our Clan!" Stung by the remark, Coniferpaw entered his warrior training under newcomer Yellowlaurel determined to prove he wasn't useless at all, and he lived up to this promise, even changing Paleswoop's mind about him. For the first few moons of his training, he was dedicated, and took every wondrous story of Yellowlaurel's to heart. But Silverpaw did not find the same rapture in such stories, and the growing crush Coniferpaw had on his fellow apprentice led him to a bout of disruption and disrespect, trying to show off for the pretty she-cat he sometimes trained with. Fed up with his arguing, Yellowlaurel asked for help from Iciclesight, who commanded all of Silverpaw's respect and would not tolerate a whiny or difficult Apprentice. On a patrol with his mentor absent, Coniferpaw proved to Iciclesight that he could hunt and track, and that there was no need to worry about his aptitude... only his attitude.

With that in Summitstar's mind, Conifershade also earned his name at only 11 moons, like most of the GlitterClan Apprentices. He worried that graduating ahead of Silverpaw meant she wouldn't like him any more, and though that's far from the case, his oblivious nature blinds him to the fact that she still very much has a crush on him. When she became a warrior herself, they began to patrol together, playing games and pestering the old badger up the cliff. Silverspeckle hasn't been feeling much like playing lately, though, and without her the old badger took a nasty swipe that mangled Conifershade's tail, and just after he'd recovered from whitecough! Conifershade is looking forward to a year with fewer stays in the healer's den, and more adventures with Silverspeckle, even if she is way too cool to ever feel the same way about him.

Silverspeckle - Warrior Age 14 Moons | Grief Stricken Charismatic | Good Storyteller Silverkit had a quiet Newleaf in the nursery, playing with Coniferkit and her father Iciclesight, and the other older cats. As the seasons turned, she was ready to become an apprentice, and it was the newly named Seedwhisker who took on the role of her mentor. Silverpaw immediately began dreaming of her future as a powerful warrior in one of the stories that were the soul of GlitterClan. Iciclesight was annoyed by watching his daughter keep her head in the clouds, losing sight of what was in front of her. Seedwhisker was much more patient with her, indulging her fancies to keep Silverpaw interested in her lessons.

Greenleaf was harder; Silverkit trained in the sun too long, and spent a moon dizzy with heatstroke, only for Seedwhisker to catch greencough just as she recovered. With Seedwhisker unable to train her, Silverpaw began to tag along with Coniferpaw for his lessons, and while she often rolled her eyes at Yellowlaurel's wild tales of Moss Cats, her eyes were very focused on the tom she was training with, and she enjoyed knowing he was looking at her, too.

Yellowlaurel was less happy about the pair distracting one another, and so Iciclesight took his daughter out to train, only for her to lament that she was never going to be a real warrior with how badly her training was going. Iciclesight had no patience for her childishness: she held all his hope and his memories and she had to grow up. Still, his methods inspired her to keep trying, to become the greatest warrior GlitterClan would ever know! Seedwhisker apologized for her absence when she recovered from her illness, and finished overseeing Silverpaw's training, as the young, proud she-cat took the name Silverspeckle. She thought her father would be prouder of her graduation, but something was weighing on his heart, and though she worried and offered him comfort, she was never able to uncover what troubled him.

Silverspeckle's year has ended as the one before it had, in tragedy and loss. She lost her mentor, Seedwhisker, and her father, Iciclesight, within the same moon. Without her father she feels lost, and the grief has proved too much to bear. Silverspeckle cannot even begin to think of what next year will bring, for it will be a long and lonely path without the guidance and warmth of Iciclesight.

Yellowpatch - Elder 162 Moons Yellowpatch's year has been quiet, but tense. His position as "wise elder" waned through the year, as his more judgemental true nature took shape and became clear the more he offered his advice. Yellowpatch refused to welcome the kittypet Yellowlaurel into the Clan, never letting her forget her soft roots. He pushed away one of his former Clanmates too, openly wishing it had been Seedpaw's original mentor that had lived instead of Iciclesight, and quickly souring any lingering fondness the two toms could have had for one another. This was never resolved, but if Yellowpatch regrets the resentment that grew between them, he's never expressed it. Instead, the elder is already looking ahead to the next year and watching his Clan grow even stronger. Perhaps his heart will change with the seasons, but no one is holding their breath.

Seedwhisker - Deceased Died Moon 10 at 18 Moons Old | Killed by a dog Charismatic | Fish-like Swimmer Seedpaw's bold personality and natural talent allowed her to graduate at 11 moons old, named Seedwhisker shortly after GlitterClan began to get accustomed to their new home. Iciclesight did his best to impart his wisdom on her, and taught her the important skills of swimming, hoping if there was ever another disaster she would survive. Only a moon later, Summitstar would assign her Silverpaw as Apprentice, a show of great faith in a cat who was barely a warrior herself. Seedwhisker did her best to train up the younger she-cat, often looking to the older warriors for help. She especially looked to Yellowlaurel, and developed a small crush on the other cat, only to find out it was one-sided, her flirtations falling on disinterested ears.

Seedwhisker lost some time with her apprentice due to a bought of greencough, and felt guilty for leaving her care up to the warriors she respected and sought to please the most. She put in extra effort when she was back on her paws, and found that Iciclesight was there for her as she found her footing, always happy to care for the young she-cats he felt responsible for guiding, even if that just meant spending the afternoons sunning together and listening to their troubles.

Once Silverspeckle had become a warrior, Iciclesight suggested a patrol with Paleswoop and Seedwhisker, wanting to keep his bond with them both strong. As they walked, they came too close to the border where the Twolegs lived, and came face to face with an enormous dog. Knowing Paleswoop's leg was still weak, and Iciclesight was older, the young and fearless Seedwhisker took it upon herself to distract the dog, swatting and hissing to buy her Clanmates time to flee. Iciclesight looked back just in time to watch Seedwhisker snapped up in the ferocious dog's jaws, limp and lifeless, and he had no choice but to return home without her, a piece of his heart dying with her.

Now Seedwhisker watches from Silverpelt, and hopes this next year will finally be one where GlitterClan can grow strong, without grief.

Iciclesight - Deceased Died Moon 11 at 114 Moons Old | Found Dead Iciclesight spent the year doing everything he possibly could to help GlitterClan and "his girls" become the best they could. In spite of his initial reluctance to merge Clans, Iciclesight knew he wanted this new start to mean something. As the Moons went on, he chose a new path, for he did not want to live a life as lonely as his existence in FrostClan. Iciclesight spent the whole year trying to fit in and find his place not just in the duties of the Clan, but in their hearts and to make friends with the younger warriors growing up around him.

He pushed Silverspeckle from kithood, through her apprenticeship, and was glad to see her become a warrior, knowing she had doubted herself. He saw Seedwhisker struggle to teach Silverpaw, and slowly grow more confident and excited to pass on what she knew, the fresh lessons in her mind. He watched Paleswoop grow bolder and brighter as Deputy of their Clan, and he was there, as best he could be, to comfort and support them. He worried as they grew, as Seedwhisker focused on her training and Paleswoop on the rest of GlitterClan's well-being, that they no longer needed him, and he began to feel that familiar urge to sit to the side and let the others go on without him.

But Yellowlaurel and Seedwhisker both came to him asking for help with their own apprentices, Paleswoop sheltered beside him during some of the worst Leaf-fall storms, and he was inspired to try and put more effort into socializing with the Deputy and his former Apprentice both.

Iciclesight and Leapdapple spent the year building a burial sight for the Clan, neither knowing that Iciclesight himself would be the first buried there. As they worked, they found there was more affection than enmity between them, and he always held a soft spot in his heart for her. He never acted on it, until losing Seedwhisker, who had felt like a daughter to him, and seeing the way Leapdapple loved and cared for Paleswoop as she grieved, too. He knew he wanted to have a family, kits that were his own, and he knew he wanted it to be with the healer, no matter what the Code had to say about it. Leapdapple denied him, in spite of her feelings, and their argument was the last interaction he ever had with one of his Clanmates. He stormed off, feeling more alone than ever, and was found days later by a patrol, cold and dead as the rest of the Leafbare world.

He held high expectations for his adopted daughter Silverspeckle all her life, and while the she-cat was prone to daydreaming and childish outbursts, he was only ever hard on her out of a belief in her greatness, and he never doubted she would live up to them. Now as he watches her grieve for his loss from StarClan, he will remain as her guardian into next year, and every year she lives after.

Dramas for the first half of 2023

Now that we are six months into 2023, time to do one of these posts. I am gonna include both Korean and Chinese dramas, because why not and any drama I even checked out is on it.

DRAMAS WATCHED

29. Romance of Twin Flower  (China) - make it cease existing! My favorite het web novel got murdered and then had its grave spat on.

28. Dominator of Martial Gods  (China) - if MST3K still existed, this drama would be prime material for it.

27. Wanru’s Journey  (China) - acting. Try it!

26. Royal Rumors  (China) - they tried acting. But forgot to try having a functional screenplay on top.

25. The Last Princess  (China) - acting is nonexistent and the story is trash but it never aspired to be what it wasn’t and was kinda cute.

24. Oasis  (Korea) - great acting in a story with a screenplay that goes round and round fruitlessly like a hamster in a cage.

23. The Trust  (China) - the OTP in this one swaps bodies but it would have been better for everyone if whoever made this and an actual competent writer swapped theirs.

22. Snow Eagle Lord  (China) - yet another drama in which Xu Kai does his best to keep acting opposite a wooden costar and through a terrible screenplay. There is something seriously wrong with that man’s career choices.

21. Heartbeat  (Korea) - the good: it’s harmless. The bad: it’s harmless.

20. Back from the Brink  (China) - ummm the people are pretty? And if I were 10 I’d be all about this show but as is...

19. Joseon Attorney  (Korea) - slightly less fun than reading a legal treatise.

18. The Starry Love  (China) - the definition of a xianxia playing it safe and pastel; I did love the secondary couple a lot but it was not enough to save that snoozefest of a drama.

17. Chong Zi  (China) - badly acted and a screenplay that somehow manages to be both repetitive and disjointed. But I am a sucker for the shizunfucker trope so here we are.

16. Island  (Korea) - a mess but Kim Nam Gil is hot with a sword.

15. Circle of Love  (China) - rationally, a hot mess. But so entertaining and addicting and fall of make outs of epicness!

14. Lady Durian  (Korea) - makjang from the Queen of Makjang and with that scrumptious cast! This is gonna be GOOD!

13. The Forbidden Marriage  (Korea) - sweet and oddly charming despite nobody in it bothering to act much.

12. Pledge of Allegiance  (China) - the way they had to edit it likely due to censorship made it less than it what could have been but still more than most dramas this year.

11. Choice Husband (China) - delicious cliches and tropes and angst in the rain!

10. Hidden Love  (China) - to make ME of all people to care about a fluffy modern is a bona fide miracle but the two mains are chemistry machines who portray longing so well.

9. Gone with the Rain  (China) - wildly uneven but our heroine and the sexy general she eventually chooses are pure gold!

8. The Secret Romantic Guest House (Korea) - how to do youth sageuk right. Everything about this just works!

7. Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow  (Korea) - it has flaws but is so gorgeous and full of longing and grief and everything good!

6. Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938  (Korea) - a sequel/prequel that is almost as good as the original, how often does that happen?

5. See You In My 19th Life  (Korea) - wacky and grieving, delicate and odd, this is everything I ever want in a kdrama.

4. Call It Love  (Korea) - a truly exquisite story of trauma and loneliness and healing and love.

3. Till the End of the Moon  (China) - gloriously messy in every way this is just MORE. The ending is enraging and there are issues but when it hits, it hits so hard the rest of it does not matter - the dark characters, the dysfunctional love story, the battles, the insane visuals, the EVERYTHING of it. This is what fantasy should be like.

2. Chang Feng Du/Destined  (China) - came out of nowhere to own my heart via its story of growing up and finding love and slow organic relationship building and keeping your soul in a world of horrors.

1. The Ingenuous One  (China) - the best one, so I am gonna talk about it below.

FAVORITE DRAMA

The Ingenuous One - so impossibly solid, from acting to visuals to screenplay to EVERYTHING! Adult characters with adult issues and choices, both moral dilemmas and battles equally compelling. The love stories, the friendships, the shades of grey. This is utterly and completely adult.

WORST DRAMA

Romance of the Twin Flower - if I could make one drama cease to exist, this would be it.

FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER

Tantai Jin, Till The End of the Moon - the best character this year hands down - by turns (and timelines) unhinged monster, a contained saint, a victim of abuse trying to attain being viewed as human, a schemer, a ruler, grief personified, curiosity and monstrosity and nobility all mingled.

Runner up: Jang Uk, Alchemy of Souls - sunshine boy gone dark and grieving, but still with that same core of steel.

FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER

Shim Woo Joo, Call It Love - she’s damaged and impulsive and relationship-phobic and revenge driven and glorious!

Runner Up:  Shu Ya Nan (The Ingenuous One) - allowed to be tough and dark and with her own agenda and not a member of a good sect and just so cool.

NEEDS TO BE MURDERED

Han Dong Jin’s Mom, Call It Love - that woman was horrifying and the source of so much of his trauma; a real realistic monster petty in all ways except for the damage she inflicted.

FAVORITE SHIP

Gu Jiusi/Liu Yuru, Chang Feng Du - wholesome and helping each other grow and talking it out but also there is blood feeding and midnight rescues and everything. They are good but not in the least boring.

Runner Up: Woo Joo/Dong Jin, Call It Love - two wounded souls finding such slow but such amazing healing with each other.

FAVORITE SECONDARY OTP

Su Ming Yu/Ke Menglan, The Ingenuous One - there’s actually been a lot of good secondary OTPs this year (General x Fox in TTEOTM, Investigator x Princess, TIO, Rang/Mermaid, TOTNT1938) but these two owned my heart - gentleman merchant x gambling hostess ftw.

Romance of Twin Flower - they took my favorite het novel OTP, smart and coldblooded and forces of nature and turned them into THAT?

SHIRTLESSNESS AWARD

Xiao Hong Ye, Circle of Love - guy was a terrible abuser but those pecs were the real sin!

CRAZIEST FUNFEST

Circle of Love - screenplay written by rabid monkeys and populated by a bunch of psychos but such ridiculous, irresistible fun!

FAVORITE SCENE

Tantai Jin confronting Li Susu in jail, Till the End of the Moon - the energy, the intensity, the darkness the EVERYTHING.

BIGGEST CRUSH

Li Gong Quan, The Ingenuous One - yeah whatever, I realize he’s a minor character but I loved him so much! The whole having to bring down your benefactor who’s gone evil tho you are in love with his daughter should have been a whole other drama!

BEST SCENE STEALER CHARACTER

Chen Wende, Gone with the Rain - most of this drama is not that exciting but whenever his King of Trolls hot general shows up, I sit up and pay attention. I am 35 eps deep because of him.

NEEDS A SEQUEL

The Ingenuous One - I am dying to see what happens to royal investigator and supposedly dead princess, how our OTP will travel the world, the merchant and his lady, Ten Taels and his orphans and his girl and just everything. I loved these people so!

NEEDS A DIRECTOR’S CUT

Till the End of the Moon - it was clear they cut a BUNCH in the last third to fit the ridiculous new “40 eps or bust” rule and it would flow so much more smoothly if it was allowed to breathe.

NEEDS SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT

Romance of Twin Flower - it should have been shredded into nonexistence sorry not sorry.

TOO MANY SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT

Pledge of Allegiance - this drama was good but had gaping lacunae where too many scissors were taken to it for censorship reasons; I am surprised even what’s left was allowed to air tbh but still...

TROPE THAT NEEDS TO DIE

Shrill = cute - I see it every year, I hate it every year.

FAVORITE TROPE WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF

Hot Men Whump - come one, TTEOTM alone would fill the quota but we also had CFD, Call It Love, See You in my 19th life etc etc.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Back from the Brink - it’s based on a novel by an author whose other novels (Zhao Yao, Blue Whispers, Mulberry Song) I adore and the novelist was the screenwriter so I was so excited. But it was a juvenile, flat mess that de-powered the heroine and taught me that yeah, sometimes the writer should not adopt their work.

BIGGEST GOOD SURPRISE

Chang Feng Du - I loved the novel but the trailers were a fluffy bland disaster and I checked it out with zero expectations. However, this is a glorious adaptation, a lesson in how to transport a massive novel on screen into slim 40 eps and to account for changes in medium and stricter censorship restrictions for dramas versus books while keeping the essential vibe of the original.

BEST NON-2023 DRAMA I’VE WATCHED IN 2023

The Imperial Doctress (China) - the pining the pining by the Hot Emperor! This is like all my web novel dreams come true!

HISTORY   ⸻

Born out of an affair of the visenya targaryen and an unknown man ( who is dead ) , much to many surprise rheyna was born with the silver hair and eyes much like her mother's . despite being a bastard the queen took her in to raise her yet rheyna will always know she was different than her half-siblings in terms of lineage . 

For bastard children to be raised by their parents in their own castle alongside their trueborn children was considered extremely unusual. But Rheyna was  raised either way in separated quarters of the castle , knowing that bastard daughters face limited prospects outside of the clergy or a good marriage . There was no denying the child to be her and wanted to secure her future .

Still , rheyna was constantly reminded by the many that she was a bastard . despite the pretty dresses and her hair to be made and at least securing her future . She would always be a bastard .  her mother had given her a large petrified dragon eggs. while shooed outside during the great feast , staying in her room , her mother showed affection for her but at a distance . made sure rheyna was taken care of . she found comfort with the dragons . taking care of them and feeding the little ones, even to the point of sometimes sleeping with them in their den .

at the age of 12 there was an attempt at rheyna's life or one could only assume as the cause of the fire and culprit was never found . fire set in her room along with her personal handmaiden . once the fire was out , by the time the moon hung over the sky , a large white baby dragon screeches and flaps his white wings as the guard enters the room ready to prepare to take the body of the bastard princess only to discover her to be alive.

this only solidified visenya's views on her daughter . knowing that should something happen to herto prepare ALL of her children .  For Rheyna she wanted to make sure that she is well cared for and saved enough money support . After all , there is no predicting what will become of her and she won't always be there and there will come a time when all her little dragons will fly off this castle.

while many viewed rheyna to be free of duty and was just born lucky , truthfully , a golden cage is still a cage . her mother still expected her to act accordingly and at times during parties she often wished she would join . watching her siblings bond , she knew it was not a place where she belonged . still , she was content knowing her mother loved her. her constant gift giving was proof of it . she was an obedient daughter after all .

rheyna is regarded as extremely beautiful . Her beauty was equaled by her cleverness, which she had in abundance. being patient and cautious about the people around her , she had develop a thick skin over the years . People regard her quietness to shyness but truthfully , rheyna is assessing those around her . there's is more than meets the eye when it comes to rheyna . like a dragon , she will burn.

as of six months ago with her half-brother now gone and her older sister now next in line , visenya has now been actively and publicly looking for a husband for rheyna .
