New month, new question: Lets talk gender. How does Vendetta identify? Is that different from how you would describe nir? Do ne feel any particular way about nir gender?
-Cigs
Heya~ <3 Thank you for the new question, and it's a fun one! Ok, let’s go ramble about gender and Vendetta.
Ne identities as nonbinary, plain and simple, done and done. If pressed, ne would probably say ne is genderqueer too. It feels fitting, and ne likes how it tastes in nir mouth, all bitey like extra sweet lemonade.
As for particular feelings…
Vendetta never quite …minded… being referred to as female at the Farm. It never felt like a constant expectation to nem. It was just a mission thing, so it felt like another mask ne put on while performing whatever the Farm needed. The rules they had set up for being female were rigid, painfully so, ridiculously so. So much so, that ne liked to play games, seeing how many of those rigid rules people broke on the regular. It was a lot, and it didn’t help nem any in thinking that rules were very arbitrary.
The thing that started to bug nem was just that It Never Changed. It got boring like any mission that repeated itself too much for too long. Dresses and skirts and heels were fun and playing a female wasn’t awful-awful (ne could think of worse things). It wasn't nem, but it was just a role so it didn’t really matter. But! Ven so wanted to try on being male too. It would be something new, at least! A new role to learn, a new skill to practice, ne could do it too!! Just give nem something new to do, please!
After escaping, Ven basically did just that, played being male and had a blast. Ne is …painfully short but was so enthralling being called boy! It was fun studying a new thing, learning the new rules and figuring how to subtly break them in the passable ways. People were so rude! So bitchy! So needlessly kind! On the same day too? It was puzzles upon puzzles upon puzzles, and Ven was dead set on figuring it all out! ✨
…until ne met Anathema and learned that ne didn’t have play with either or? That ne could just jump off the whole damn rule system entirely. So, you know—
—toss the shit right the fuck out! Which is good because being male every day was starting to get dull and feel a bit cagey too, lol. But, yeah! Anathema definitely helped a lot, and Vendetta was maybe a little overenthusiastic about learning this new brand thing(s). I don't think Vendetta would've figure that on nir own and probably would've ended up being quite miserable performing as a guy every day and/or would've just jumped ship on LD to start again (and then again, and again, and again, forever). :'l So thank you for taking this little clueless foll under your wing, Themmy. <3
(Ven absolutely stole Themmy's pronouns too, but ne felt better than she or he. Ne felt nem.)
I wouldn't really describe Vendetta anything different too. o: I have internal debates, lol, like 'would so-and-so be better given the xyz?' But, not really. Ne is just …strangely happy being nonbinary and/or genderqueer. It feels simple, simple and right, simple and nice. So, why overthink it? It's one of the few things Vendetta doesn't overthink. It just is, and that's just lovely.
If ne had all the words and a blank piece of paper to just vibe on, I think ne would just settle on some shade of 'my gender is the performance'. Ven is a deeply performative person, and while some aspects of that chafes against nem deeply, gender doesn't (not anymore, not in nir body, thank you Themmy. The Puppet is another story though).
Ne likes playing, changing up masks and mix-and-matching them and being very unserious about it. Does it matter? Not really. Rules are very arbitrary after all, and with enough confidence, people will stop questioning you anyways (mostly). Gender is just a vibe, it's a mood, it's a nebulous and fucky thing sitting pretty in the middle of Ven's metaphorical not!soul and not!heart, and ne doesn't feel like it needs to be more than that.
(Just don't ask nem what's under the performance.)
#plain and simple i say before#i write an essay and a half about#ven's feelings and journey through gender#'is my gender just an ever-changing performance?'#yup! basically. have fun with that#at least ven does have fun with it. one of the few things... :'l#and thank you for the monthly question again! <3#vendetta frey

LinkedIn is a miserable website for many reasons and one of those is because companies will post polls like
"Which of these is most important to you when choosing a new organization to work for 🙌 ?"
- The pay
- Integration of new technologies
- Company culture
- CEO reputation
And then the results will be like 87% 'the pay' because companies on LinkedIn seem to forget that people do jobs in order to be compensated and it's almost embarrassing that they'd post polls like this expecting to create a thinkpiece about how company culture is more important than the pay or something and that's why you should force your team on more company outings. Or whatever.
#there was a poll that was like 'what is your ideal intern situation?'#and the options were like#'no pay' 'weekly pay' 'monthly pay' 'performance bonus'#and both weekly and monthly pay were winning by a VAST majority

My personal life is in chaos right now and for the most part I’m only considering happy or hopeful media. I assumed TGR would easily fall into the hopeful camp because Jean’s healing is the most important thing (or that my own excitement might cancel out any other requirements I had) but I’m not even a chapter in and I may need to reevaluate. Can someone who’s read the book give me some non-spoiler/limited spoiler insight into the hopefulness vibe? Does it end on a good note for Jean and Jeremy? Is the angst mostly working through old shit or is new trauma being accumulated? (I am not opposed to learning about new traumatic events that happened in the past, but want a handle on whether focus is healing/growth or in the thick of it emotional turmoil)
#aftg tgr#tgr#the golden raven#why is my personal life in chaos#well I work for the us federal government#my agency is supposed to get rid of like 10% of its employees#I’ve been dealing with constant musk fuckery for the last week#I don’t even really like my job. it was supposed to be a stepping stone to other things that allowed for security in the meantime#it’s sort of served its purpose in that I no longer owe 25k because I completed a year of federal service tied to those funds#also if I last 11 more months I get access to more job opportunities that better align with my education and values#not that I can really do that in this environment but it would be helpful for the fuckery afterwards#I would even settle for just not being fired before April 15 because that would allow me to complete this performance review cycle#but I love where I live and I don’t want to move in May but I also can’t afford to stay without a job#my family lives in the Midwest and I love living in NOVA#I love the museums and the culture and my libraries and my friends#I love my apartment with its privacy and little balcony and monthly gatherings

see one of the reasons why i hate elongated muskrat and his aerospace money laundering operation is because everything they make is SO GODDAMN UGLY
(engineer ranting below)(you have been warned‼️)
like look at this:
this is spacex's suit prototype for polaris dawn (which is another shitshow entirely that ill maybe make a post abt). now you may be thinking, but wait a minute! why is it so skinny? are they giving ozempic to space suits now??
that's because you're thinking of this bad boy:
this is NASA's EMU (extravehicular mobility unit) meant for performing tasks in space like, say, cleaning the solar panels on the ISS or repairing the million parts that have broken since launch. it's entirely self sustainable for over 8 hours, with its own life support, propulsion pack, and a bunch of other shit. it's been in use for over a zillion years and it's finally getting phased out for the artemis missions. thing is an absolute unit.
spacex's suit is a different kind of space suit, called an umbilical suit. these suits are not self sustaining, instead being attached to the ship/module/whatever via a cord. hence the name. the cord provides both oxygen and communications support. they were used by NASA during the 60s but were quickly abandoned because having a non-self sustaining suit for spacewalks is fucking stupid.
lets compare spacex's suit again:
(gross ugly lame boring puke emoji)
to NASA's version from the gemini missions:
thats fucking badass. do you see how badass that is? look at him. look at how cool he looks. you could never be that cool. ever.
#not to mention the fact that spacex's suits use air cooling which was abandoned in the 60s instead of water cooling?????#like they're not gonna be able to perform EVAs lolololol#your monthly reminder i am actually in college for this shit#and not just rotting in my room somewhere#aerospace#spacex#i hate u spacex!!!!!!#just know that!!!!!!!#NASA#aerospace technology#space exploration#aerospace engineering

thinking about artist Archie and Frenchie both pulling random fluxus/grapefruit prompts and doing them together. Then it becoming a weekly Revenge artist exercise.
Fluxus (experimental art movement) and Grapefruit (book by Yoko Ono that embodied Fluxus) - basically ‘event scores’ or prompts for (often) performance art. They were often absurd, often ephemeral or esoteric or inevitable. Examples:

(tape piece iii and walking piece from Grapefruit by Yoko Ono George Brecht. Games and Puzzles (Name Kit) from Fluxkit. 1965, Fluxus Edition announced 1965 Page from Fluxus 1, containing ‘Flux Napkin’. 1964, Fluxus Edition announced 1966) (God I’m crying reading Grapefruit now. Being a pisces is hard work but someone’s gotta do it [PDF])
but anyway I can perfectly imagine Archie’s smile and laugh and body language while they do some of the sillier prompts, and Frenchie’s little smirk. It’s the smirk of pyramid scheme and authentic planks. The events that ask for silence, they do with permanent little smiles channeling the silliest and most earnest intentionality that you can’t NOT look at it and not be soppy about it.
Fluxus isn’t just prompts or events, it’s a whole movement. It’s about accessibility of art, it’s about making art constantly, it’s about being anti-art, it’s about subverting the capitalist ideas of art. But to me it’s a beautiful exercise in opening yourself to the vastness of art. Everything is and can be art, from the sound of silence to the crushing of stones to the using of a napkin to taking a walk with someone. It’s down to intention, it’s down to openness, It’s down to earnestness and curiosity. It’s down to being receptive and most importantly PLAYFULNESS. It’s about letting art be low stakes and letting art into every moment of your life. It’s about embodying art.
Plus, Izzy would love this bc that sub loves to follow a direction. Man is lost in subspace watching the stars and turning on and off his headlights and walking in someone else’s footsteps.
(If all of those examples sounded insane and esoteric, here are more links to Fluxus things. First publication (poetry! Music! Vehicles! John Cage! Yoko Ono! Nam June Paik!) ‘An Anthology of Chance Operations’, and archive of fluxus artbooks: fluxus 1, fluxkit, and flux year box 2)
Even more emotional thinking abt how in college, in his really intense performance art and physical exertion phase, Izzy loved Fluxus and the idea of art being that and following directions and experiencing something new from it.
Then he gets to know the crew eventually, And finds out they do this. And oh, he’s taken aback. Launched back to being 19, to grieving his sister and transitioning and experiencing lack of bodily autonomy and finding refuge in performance art. And fondness bubbles up so hot and acrid he has to step outside. After that he’s part of the weekly events. He and the crew relish the events that take the most time, like the walking piece. The crew is fascinated by his earnestness and tenacity when so often before they only saw perfection and persnicketiness.
[originally posted as a twt thread]
#then started crying again thinking about making my own fluxus art book#and then i was thinking maybe they'd do this monthly instead of weekly bc archie and frenche would want to make their own art books/boxes a#a la flux kit#i want them to have dinner with their napkins from the envelope#i want them to go outside and do the motor vehicle sundown (event)#i want them to do the walking piece#and i want frenchie to perform john cage pieces - famous fluxus artist who did 4' 33" the song of 4 mins 33 secs of silence#but he performed a piece on a prepared piano (classic john cage)#or any other various piece#they have everyone come up with their own prompts and thorughout the months#theyre chosen to be inclided in a dinner#i will be writing fanfiction of these such events#ofmd#text post#izzy hands#edward teach#stede bonnet#fic#ceramics au#fluxus#archie ofmd#frenchie ofmd#links#twt

“Hatto was a founding member of the celebrated Alban Berg Quartet, and was a passionate exponent of chamber music: music on a human scale, with a single voice to a part, ideally heard in the intimate setting of a chamber or a room rather than in a cavernous concert hall. As we played the Mendelssohn trio, trying desperately to impress him, he listened patiently and then gently lifted his hand for us to stop.
"Do not just count in this entry," he said, softly but emphatically. "If you just count, it is just business in music. Instead, this entry must occur at the exact moment you all feel it must occur."
And so we tried once again - staring intently at each other as if we could will ourselves into perfect ensemble - but again he raised his hand.
"There is a difference between the Ancient Greek concept of Chronos," he observed, "which is time that can be measured, and Kairos, which means the right time. Simply play these chords at the moment they demand to be heard."
As soon as we did this - as soon as we stopped trying to second-guess each other, but instead surrendered to that collective knowledge - our ensemble worked. And in a way, all of our work since has been guided by this notion of Kairos: of seeking the right, shared moment.”
~ Anna Goldsworthy, “Notes for a better world - on the beauty and necessity of music”. From The Monthly, Dec 2024 - Jan 2025 Summer Reading Edition.
