To be honest, I was scared for a moment that Amon would be called Monette in all of book 2.
Book 1’s villain: Amon.
Book 2’s villain: Monette. (This is the same person.)
It would feel strange….

SUNDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “All Things Are Possible” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoSD0WHu7gw  …to those who believe*… I’m going into a dance-techno groove, with words about rising above adversity, distraction, and naysayers. One night I heard St. Etienne, a London-based group that combines retro-soul and Europop with dance club culture. Their song “Nothing Can Stop Us Now” inspired me to write “All Things Are Possible.” I imagined if Donna Summer sang a Star Trek soundtrack with Weather Report as the backing band + Brian Auger on organ solo. The steller vocal improvs are by gospel singer Monette Newsuan.

The Orb of Cairado by Katherine Addison, a novella in the world of The Chronicles of Osreth, to release 31 January 2025!
Summary:
Set in the world of Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award nominee The Goblin Emperor, The Orb of Cairado offers an unlikely hero in historian Ulcetha Zhorvena.
Five years ago, Ulcetha was studying at the University of Cairado, working his way toward becoming a scholar first-class in the Department of History. Then a prize artifact disappeared and Ulcetha, deftly framed, was kicked out. Now he works for a crooked importer, using his knowledge of elven history to write provenances for the fake artifacts Salathgarad sells.
When the airship Wisdom of Choharo explodes, killing the emperor and three of his four sons, it takes with it Ulcetha’s best friend, Mara Lilana. But Mara leaves behind a puzzle—the one thing Ulcetha can’t resist. And the puzzle leads Ulcetha back to the Department of History…and maybe the chance to clear his name.
----
This is a standalone novella. I contacted the publisher, and they said it will be sold as an ebook as well (at least in the US and Canada), but didn't say when.
The conclusion of The Cemeteries of Amalo trilogy, The Tomb of Dragons, releases 11 March 2025!

SONG OF THE WEEK: "People Medley: Everyday People + Fishers of Men + One for the Pastor” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/people-medley-everyday-people-fishers-of-men-one-for-the-pastor-2  ...I share this in advance of Juneteenth, falling this week on the 19th (if you don’t know about Juneteeth I encourage you to look it up).Â
Sly Stone wrote “Everyday People” as a plea, proclaiming "I am everyday people" to mean that everyone (band member and audience) should consider themselves as parts of a whole, not of smaller, specialized factions. Rose Stone (Sly’s sister) sang the bridge sections using the cadence of a children's taunt, mocking the futility of people hating each other for being tall, short, rich, poor, fat, skinny, white, black, red, yellow “…and so on and scooby dooby dooby.”
I recorded this in 2000 with a “funk/soul academy” of contributors, including drummer Jab’O Starks, best known for his years with James Brown. He was a prince to work with. I was honored to play 4 gigs with “dueling drummers” Jab’O + Clyde Stubblefield, billed as James Brown’s Funkmasters. During dinners with both men, I soaked up their “war stories” about music, the Chiltlin’ Circuit, and “making it” during the days of segregation. There are many more “back stories” behind this track...Â

Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story
by Paul Monette
The National Book Award–winning coming-out memoir. “One of the most complex, moral, personal, and political books to have been written about gay life” (LA Weekly). Paul Monette grew up all-American, Catholic, overachieving . . . and closeted. As a child of the 1950s, a time when a kid suspected of being a “homo” would routinely be beaten up, Monette kept his secret throughout his adolescence. He wrestled with his sexuality for the first thirty years of his life, priding himself on his ability to “pass” for straight. The story of his journey to adulthood and to self-acceptance with grace and honesty, this intimate portrait of a young man’s struggle with his own desires is witty, humorous, and deeply felt. Before his death of complications from AIDS in 1995, Monette was an outspoken activist crusading for gay rights. Becoming a Man shows his courageous path to stand up for his own right to love and be loved.

So.
I grabbed a book off my shelf that's been sitting there for some years to read on this trip, because I know the author's writing well enough at this point (this is my sixth book by her) that it would be long and dense enough to last the trip.
Except I bought this book because of the author, and it turns out I have been suckered into my second Sherlock Holmes adaptation ever.
Kind of.
In my defense, this is nowhere apparent until you start reading.
But I think the "these are not the characters you think they are" is also important, because this story is narrated by one J.H. Doyle, recently returned from Afghanistan with a debilitating war wound that saw him discharged from the royal medical corps and who takes up rooming with a non-human Angel named Crow who works as the world's only consulting detective.
Anyway, I'm (only) 94 pages in. So I don't really know what's going on with this (this sounds insane, but is the way of this author). But. I guess this sort of counts as an adaptation, anyway?
It's got a queer tag on Storygraph, but I think I heard some years back that it's kinda iffy on ace things (not sure enough of my recollection to recall why), but knowing this author, there will be queer characters who are exactly as miserable as everyone else and eventually at the very end get set on a path to healing.
...I don't read her writing because I want happy queer shit.
