Fresh Precure is about community, and how community forms support systems beyond the family unit.

Many heel face turns focus on the characters growth. How they come to understand differently, and how they grow into a new person. Setsuna, once freed from Labyrinth actually changes her personality rather quickly, she doesn't spend much time struggling with everything all things considered. Now, I think Setsuna's arc is top tier: her denying her true wants because its different from what she's been told she wants all her life, wanting to be useful to her community but her community not serving her, finding people who care about her and give to Setsuna rather than only take, her guilt for taking the happiness away from others that people have been giving her. But ultimately, it's not so much about Setsuna's personal growth, so much as about how this community rehabilitates an abused girl.

Unlike many other seasons where her living situation would be a bit of an afterthought its front and center here. We get to see all the little things that the Momozono's do for Setsuna, all the little things they get for her.

It's why the toothbrush scene is so important. A toothbrush is such a little thing, but the Momozono's are going out of their way to remember she needs one, to get one for her. And they ask her what kind she wants. The Momozono's are giving her freedom, are allowing her to embrace her own decisions, rather than in Labyrinth where she was manipulated into doing what others wanted of her.

It's not just the Momozono's. It's Kaoru giving her a donut simply because she hadn't had one before. Lucky and Takeshi playing with Setsuna. Miyuki helping support Setsuna when she was feeling pressured to dance. Of course the whole town does this for everyone.

The Cures go and support a little girl in the hospital, both as themselves and as their cure selves. Kaoru looks after the girls and tries to get them to eat when they're overworking themselves. Miyuki helping the girls balance their lives. This is the first iteration where Cure's are truly celebrities rather than their occasional public appearance in Fresh and the public cheers them on accordingly, and even helps in more tangible ways (like offering an expensive training facility).

This is contrasted against Labyrinth who erases individuality in the name of the collective, but where the collective is suffering. Who has no art, no family, no socialization. Where no one offers help unless ordered to. Where everything is for Moebius. And so, the smallest acts of kindness (a donut) have far reaching effects. Because the people of Labyrinth believe they're doing right. That this is the best for everyone. They don't know what happiness is, so when faced against actual it for the first time, as well as actual community for the first time, it crumbles.

But even the individuals in Labyrinth aren't always heartless. Westar has even more of a sense of community than Eas. A desire to give back. However, is loyalty to Labyrinth is stronger. Westar takes Eas leaving personally. He's often cast aside, underestimated. Westar's a goofy sort of villain, but more than that he's a victim just like Eas and Soular. He thrives once he gets to leave. He thrives in a community that gives him the support he gives others.

I think it's no coincidence that this season has the first cure with divorced parents. We never see her father, but we know he's not completely absent from her life. She still has a close relationship with her brother. This nontraditional family dynamic I think sets the stage for Setsuna later on, who is welcomed into the Momozono family. She's family even without blood.

I review Fresh Precure! Warning, the review will contain some spoilers. Not a lot, just more so the obvious ones.

“Momozono Love is a second year student at Public Yotsuba Junior High School. One day, Love goes to see the concert of a popular dance unit called Trinity and she is impressed!! Seeing Miyuki, the leader of Trinity, kick starts Love's dream to dance. However, because of the sudden appearance of a Nakewameke, the concert becomes a disaster!! Labyrinth intends to overthrow the town and control the whole world but doesn't that seem like a far-reaching conspiracy...!? Love yearns to protect the people and see Trinity perform live once again. As a Linkrun is motivated by the strong feelings of Love, it turns her mobile into a transformation device turning her into a legendary warrior - Pretty Cure!! Along with Tarte and Chiffon, fairies from the Sweet Kingdom, Aono Miki and Yamabuki Inori, they use their power of love, hope and prayer to defeat Labyrinth's evil plans. “

If I had to pick out a series that had both the memorability and forgettable things in Precure at the same time, I’d point to Fresh Precure. Why? On one hand you’ve seen these three characters before. Well, two of them are new types to the Precure franchise or at least, the first ones as this came after Yes! Precure 5 and Gogo! I’m basically saying, you’ve seen them in other things. The snooty girl that thinks she’s perfect, the shy girl that is a little bit of a cry baby or worry wort at least and the good hearted leader. The leader, Love is basically another Nozomi. She’s the hyper active leader that wants to help others and tends to push her nose into things for the sake of another. 

Well, I’ll give Love credit, least there is a little bit more to her. She gets more emotional distraught than Nozomi and people do scorn her a little more, rather than just accept it all the time. That and because she gets more sad and emotional than Nozomi, she feels more human. I actually kept thinking to myself, “Yup, this is what a teenager would act like.” so she is likable and believable. I always felt Love was a bit better than say Mana from Doki Doki, because while both are helpful and put in passion for being helpful, Love has certainly more flaws than Mana, so you find her a bit more believable. 

With that being said, why do I say this is forgettable? Well as said,, aside from what they do with the villains, nothing really stands out that much from it. Shoot, their modems are suppose to be fruit, yet there’s nothing on the precure that show this. They don’t wear fruit accessories, their attacks are shaped into different card shapes instead of fruit and it’s not like any of the cures are they’re obsessed with the fruit they’re named after. The only indication is in their names like “Monozono” translates to “Peach garden” but other than that, you could have called them “Cure Love”, “Cure Hope” and “Cure Prayer” and that would have made more sense than name them after fruit. 

Shoot, even the fairy world, “the Land of Sweets” is really lame. I mean, they could have done much more to this world. You have a place called “The Land of Sweets” and yet they don’t do anything that stands out or make it special!

So what is memorable about this? Well as said, the villains. This is the first time we get a Precure that started out as one of the villains and for the first time villain turned cure, she’s pretty decent. (No, I don’t count Kaoru and Michiru because they’re not technically Precure. They just helped them and they’re not even part of the team actually.)

Her name is Setsuna/Eas and she starts out as one of the main villains before accidentally becoming friends with Love and slowly understanding friendship, thus reincarnating her into Cure Passion. I mean this directly as in she actually dies first before being revived. Yeah, a character that befriends the cures in Precure dies on screen! Like her body just drops down and dies. They don’t pull a digimon where the body just magically disappears, either. She just keels over and dies. That’s pretty dang dark for a show like this! I mean, yeah she’s revived in a heartbeat but still! It happened!

Which is one of the things people remembered this series for being. Kinda bleak and bit mature in story writing! I mean, they do have corny moments but even the corny moments are actually mature a little too.

 Though, I will admit, Setsuna’s development from villain to Cure is a little clunky compared to Cure Beat and her over all from Cure Scarlet. I think I’ll do a special review on Cure Passion, Cure Beat and Cure Scarlet and explain what I think is the better one that did this. Her development isn’t bad but after watching Suite Precure and Go Princess, it does come off a little rushed and kinda clunky, but not say real bad. She is still one of my favorite cures and when she finally got accepted by Love’s family, I did get misty eye about it. 

The other villains are pretty decent, especially compared to the previous ones they had in this franchise. They actually do have a little development, each have their own personality and their designs are pretty interesting too. They don’t look like Sailor Moon monster rejects that’s for sure. They look like legit generals for the villains.

The other problem I had with this series is that at times, it did take itself a little too seriously. Like the thing with the baby fairy and the villains using her and this conspiracy stuff, it’s just a little too complex for a show like this and honestly, I felt myself kinda bored by it. I barely remember what went on. Shoot, I could tell you what happened at the end of Heartcatch Precure and that one I haven’t watched in YEARS. I still actually have to watch it again to review that one better. Don’t get me wrong, I like dark stuff in kids shows and I like it when they do make it a little complex, but the way it’s done here...I dunno. I just think the other Precure series did a better job at a climax than this one.

But give it credit, it is one of the few series many people will point to, if someone asked which Precure series has a better written and mature story. The other two would be Heartcatch, Go Princess and on some occasions, maybe Smile. And yeah...I’m one of those people that will say that too. It’s not perfect and not one of my favorites, but I will give credit for how the story is written. It’s written well and the animation fits the tone. I just feel like the ending could have been way better.

Not to mention but the songs are really good! The music is awesome, it always gets me pumped and I will admit, whenever I change my avatar’s outfit on a game such as Smallworlds, I do shout out “Change! Precure!” and imagine that song playing as I change my avatar’s clothing. Occasionally, I’ll say it when I change clothes too, but it’s mainly my avatars on things like SW and Second Life.

So, yeah it’s decent. It’s not bad and it certainly had a lot of balls compared to a lot of Precure series that came before and after it. It’s just some aspects of the show are a little stronger than the other ones. Some areas are a bit more memorable like the villains and music. Then some are a bit weaker like the Cure Pine and Berry and the fairy world. Take it for what it’s worth, not one of my personal favorites but pretty well written and I gotta give credit where credit is due.

I give this series a fair 7 and half stars out of 10. Check it out and see for yourself.
