W A T C H E D
I've seen my share of John Hughes movies. He was the most successful 80s-90s writer.
National Lampoon's Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Mr. Mom, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller, 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles', The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, Home Alone 1 & 2, Only the Lonely, Baby's Day Out, Dennis the Menace, Miracle on 34th Street (1994), Dutch...
I just haven't seen any of the MOLLY RINGWALD ones. Well, time to play catchup.
ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL is really clever young actor, more than I ever noticed previously.

10 Films We’re Excited To Watch at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival
After a chaotic edition which involved numerous Spielberg appearances, a Taylor Swift ticket-master fiasco, and an underwhelming curation of world cinema titles — the Toronto International Film Festival returns with a more subdued edition for their 48th celebrations. After building a notorious reputation for their glamorous red carpets and celebrity sightings, TIFF may have accidentally found…

Buried: Season 1 – Online Review
TL;DR – This is a fascinating juxtaposition between the normal and the absurd that sucks you in, and a poor woman’s life implodes one day. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. Disclosure – I was sent a screener of this series. Buried Review – Today, we are looking at a series that is short in run time but big on impact. It is often said that less is more, and it is true that limitations can lead to…

And of course Molly dancing which also has a Molly!
Most of the sides I know are Cotswold or Border and the only Molly side I know is Gog Magog Molly who all wear skirts regardless of gender. They’re not traditional as such which is something there’s a lot more space for in molly dancing because, as I understand it, the big folk dance collectors thought it was a bit silly and didn’t record much of it and it died out completely before being revived.
I think in traditional Molly you just had the one Molly and everyone else had other types of disguise on. This was because you were essentially doing morris in the Pratchett tradition of ‘we’ll keep doing this until you pay us to go away’ which could involve property damage, and you ideally still wanted your landowning target to consider employing you again in the Spring. Disguises could involve black face as well as cross dressing which I think is important to acknowledge so we can decide which parts of our traditions we want to keep and which we recognise as racist and leave behind.
On another note: a friend of mine is currently researching Moll Cutpurse who was a cross dressing/ gender non-confirming (and maybe ace!) thief who became a very famous public figure in the early 17th century and is depicted in the 1611 play ‘The Roaring Girl’. My friend is looking into whether Moll may be part of the origin of the term Molly House 😊

Quarter Notes: Blurbs & Briefs from Sound Bites
- In this edition: Blind Boys of Alabama; Freddie O’Connell for Nashville mayor; Neil Young & Crazy Horse; & the Beatles
JIMMY CARTER ON RETIREMENT FROM BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA: Jimmy Carter, the 91-year-old Blind Boy of Alabama, said it was his voice, not his age, that led him to retire from the road and make the forthcoming Echoes of the South his final album with the group.
“I promised myself - and I promised the Blind Boys - that I would never do anything to cause them a disservice,” he told Salvation South. “My voice is gone now, I have no more voice, so I refuse to go out there like that. And it’s just not good for me now to go (on the road). I want to go out while I’m ahead, not behind.”
MUSICIANS FOR FREDDIE: Emmylou Harris, Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, Allison Russell, Brittney Spencer, Brothers Osborne, Butch Walker, Ketch Secor, Maren Morris, Molly Tuttle and Will Hoge are among the musicians backing Freddie O’Connell for Nashville mayor in the city’s Sept. 14 runoff election.
“Get ’em Freddie,” Isbell tweeted. “We need ya.”
MICAH NELSON GETS ON THE HORSE: Micah Nelson, also known as Particle Kid, will step in for Nils Lofgren when Neil Young & Crazy reunite for two shows - Sept. 20 and 21 - at Los Angeles’ Roxy. Lofgren, it seems, is moonlighting with a little outfit known as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
ALL YOU NEED IS FAB: Utopia’s Kasim Sulton and Gil Assayas, the Tubes’ Kasim Sulton and Zero’s Steve Kimock are among the musicians joining forces as All You Need is Love for a run of January 2024 concerts celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Beatles’ arrival in America.
Info here.

CMA Country Christmas 2022
So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would like to talk about the latest edition of CMA Country Christmas. And this time once again hosted by Carly Pearce and originally aired on Thursday December 8th, 2022 at 9pm EST (Eastern Standard Time) on channel 9 ABC (where I am at). So let's see what our favorite artists performed for us on this night.
Carly Pearce - Here comes Santa Claus. Dan + Shay - Officially Christmas. Scotty McCreery - Holly Jolly Christmas. Steven Curtis Chapman - Precious promise. Old Dominion - What Christmas means to me. Maren Morris - Merry Christmas baby. Molly Tuttle - It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Carly Pearce - God rest ye merry Gentlemen. Molly Tuttle & Carly Pearce - Walking in a winter wonderland. Molly Tuttle & Carly Pearce - Christmas time's a comin'. Dan + Shay - Holiday party. War & Treaty - O holy night. Carly Pearce - The man with the bag.
And that's a wrap for the performance on this night. And on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would give this special a 3 out of 5 stars. Only a 1 hour special is kind of lacking. So a good program to watch every year. But just need maybe another hour. Thanks as always goes out to you for taking the time to read this review. See ya all next time.

To other English people, stop saying "England has no culture", it is actively harming us. There is a reason the Tories defunded the arts and heritage sectors whilst scapegoating immigrants. The fear that immigrants will come and destroy Englishness is only working as the government is literally trying to actively wipe it out. If we a) recognise the things that are distinctly cultural (eg architecture styles) and b) actively participate in the traditions you're always told are silly (Morris and Molly dancing, scarecrow competitions and folk songs), it will actually make us better as a country and more difficult to divide via classism, racism and xenophobia
