Make Sure Your Twitter Searches Include Sensitive Content
Mohammad Fadel, whose Twitter (X) account is @shanfaraa, asked if his account was shadow-banned or restricted. I happened to be at a computer where another person has a Twitter account. Using a Chrome browser on a Windows 10 machine, I used the Twitter search bar to search for “shanfaraa”. I printed out as PDF files the “Top,” “Live” and “People” tabs from the results. (Praxis Redacted)📌 Platinum Rods and Pain: Gaza's Health Crisis Deepens
The ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have left many civilians severely injured, with hospitals overwhelmed and lacking essential medical supplies. Speaking to Al-Akhbar, patients like Zi’ad Al-Mubayyed, who lost part of his arm and sustained multiple fractures, describe the agony of having their wounds treated with external platinum rods. Without adequate antibiotics and pain relief, these devices frequently lead to infections. Similarly, Ibtihaal Sarour, another victim, lost two children and now relies on a wheelchair after sustaining severe fractures.
The medical crisis is further compounded by a blockade that prevents even basic food items like meat and eggs from entering, hindering patient recovery. Gaza's hospitals are forced to delay surgeries and reuse scarce medical equipment due to severe shortages, with doctors often resorting to temporary treatments. Dr. Fadel Naeem, a surgeon, reports that many fractures remain untreated due to a lack of internal fixation devices, exacerbating patients' conditions.
Additionally, the closure of Gaza’s borders has blocked international medical aid and the transfer of critically injured patients out of the region, leaving local medical teams overwhelmed and unable to manage the escalating healthcare emergency.

Both Canada and the U.S. have construed the court’s decision narrowly, suggesting it merely reiterates Israel’s right of self-defence and obligation to comply with international humanitarian law. This is a legally indefensible reading of the court’s ruling.
Heidi Matthews, Faisal Bhabha, Mohammad Fadel in The Conversation. Ruling by UN’s top court means Canada and the U.S. could be complicit in Gaza genocide

Leeds Beckett University presents nine architecture and design projects
A "Recycled Fun Palace" and pottery studios for autistic and non-verbal people are included in Dezeen's latest school show by Leeds Beckett University.
Also included is a project that imagines a post-viral Blackpool and another that explores the idea that colonising another planet is the solution to climate change.
Leeds Beckett University
School: Leeds Beckett University, Leeds School of Architecture Courses: BA(Hons) Architecture, BA(Hons) Landscape Architecture and Design, BA(Hons) Interior Architecture and Design, MA Landscape Architecture, Master of Architecture (MArch) Tutors: Claire Hannibal, Tom Vigar, Simon Warren, Keith Andrews, Doreen Bernath, Nick Tyson, John Maccleary, Chris Royffe, Sarah Mills, George Epolito, Mohammad Taleghani, Alia Fadel, Amanda Wanner and Maryam Osman
School statement:
"Leeds School of Architecture questions what architecture and the built environment can contribute to the world we live in from a cultural, social and political point of view. As a result, we have expanded modes of practice, research, and inter-disciplinary work to inform new critical voices and collectively empower creative minds to tackle our current environmental and ethical challenges.
"Our continued school ethos of collaboration enables new design problems and solutions to emerge, and the projects exhibited within this showcase crucially engage with this theme.
"There have been many student successes as a result of the school's continued collective action, studio agendas, and the commitment of its students and course staff teams.
"During 20/21, opportunities for our students to locate their practice in wider contexts included collaborations on projects with Crescent Arts - Scarborough, the Forestry Commission, Henshaws Specialist College, Leeds Art Gallery, Portsmouth University, Temple University - Philadelphia, New Wortley Community Association, CATCH (Community Action to Create Hope) - Harehills, Halifax Opportunities Trust, and MAP Charity, Leeds.
"The work presented brings together student work from across the following programmes: BA(Hons) Architecture, BA(Hons) Interior Architecture, and Design, BA(Hons) Landscape Architecture and Design, MA Landscape Architecture and Master in Architecture (MArch)."
The Survivor's Sanctuary (The Black Plague of Blackpool, The Walking Dead) by Dominic Stewart
"Once a hamlet by the sea, Blackpool emerged as a significant seaside destination for the well-to-do in the nineteenth century. Since this period of boom, however, it has suffered a decline, and although it remains a destination, it currently exists in two states lodged between the permanent – its residents – and the transitory – its fleeting visitors.
"The project imagines a post-viral townscape that questions ideas of community and the fragile state of our urban fabric. Set within a global pandemic, the rebirth of civilisation forces inhabitants to examine historic ways of building whilst developing technologies of energy production.
"The Survivor's Sanctuary proposes a future that challenges ideas of self-sufficiency, sustainable building, and the structural adaptability of reclaimed materials. A testbed for ideas, the success of the future lies in the hands of those who have survived."
Student: Dominic Stewart Course: BA(Hons) Architecture Tutor: Claire Hannibal
The Recycled Fun Palace: Repurposing Philadelphia's Refinery Infrastructure through Community Institutes by Luke Singleton
"Citizen Agency studio projects were located in Philadelphia, USA, commencing with The Edmund N. Bacon Urban Design Awards Student Competition. The site is a 1,300-acre redundant refinery close to Philadelphia's centre. 13 students prepared one group entry titled 'Community Institutes'.
"Our design studio was awarded third prize. From each student's contribution to the competition, a community institute proposition was developed.
"The Recycled Fun Palace reuses a disused gasometer. The immense structure takes on a new role, acting as the framework for a Cedric Price-inspired superstructure. In response to the ever-increasing climate emergency, the new architecture has been constructed by reusing refinery infrastructure."
Student: Luke Singleton Course: BA(Hons) Architecture Tutor: Simon Warren
The Seven Vails of The Lord by Cassie Norrish
"The Abstract Machines studio projects were based in York and explored the following propositional themes. Research into the cultural manifestations of political parties with students defining their position; exploration of the spatial systems through which party organisations could manifest themselves; and how an architectural language can represent the ideals and values of the defined organisation within a particular culture.
"Norrish's project called 'The Seven Vails of The Lord' examines institutional religion's subordination of women through hierarchy, ritual, and spatial exclusion.
"The project deconstructs the faith's given axioms through a series of narrative spatial sequences overlaid with subverted historical and contemporary church rituals."
Student: Cassie Norrish Course: BA(Hons) Architecture Tutor: Keith Andrews
The Colony by Sam Pick
"This studio explored plans. It considered how they are created and what implications this method has on their realisation as spaces.
"Students developed unique approaches to plans as counter positions to rational 2D methods. Projects were set in Greenwich, with students given free control over briefs and programmes to explore their approaches.
"This project proposes that colonising another planet is the only response to the increasing danger of climate change. The 'colony' uses 3D-printing methods to explore spatial limitations and consider how the inhabitants might cope with being in control of their own environment.
"The spatial consequences of 3D printing are explored alongside a politically charged narrative over time, with the colony inhabitants coming together and pulling apart as they modify their surroundings."
Student: Sam Pick Course: BA(Hons) Architecture Tutor: Tom Vigar
Breaking the Mould: Pottery Workshops for Autistic and Non-verbal Individuals by Hannah Elebert
"Through art-based studio practice and self-generated projects, our interior architecture and design graduating students create sustainable interior spaces, engaging with the adaptive reuse of buildings and structures in response to contemporary social, ethical and political issues.
"Elebert's project advocates for environmental inclusion through creating an interactive space designed to accommodate the needs of autistic and non-verbal individuals.
"Located in the Former Calcining Works, a Grade II Listed Building in Stoke-on-Trent, the project extends the legacy of the site including learning spaces and pottery workshops for the manipulation of clay.
"Focus is given to the detailing of transition spaces that address the specific accessibility needs of autistic and non-verbal children."
Student: Hannah Elebert Course: BA(Hons) Interior Architecture and Design Tutors: Maryam Osman and Amanda Wanner
Leeds Innovation District by Magdalena Maciejewska
"This studio was designed to create opportunities for students to demonstrate creativity, personal focus and design competence through undertaking a comprehensive landscape architecture challenge in Leeds Innovation District.
"Together with Leeds universities and the teaching hospitals NHS Trust, the city have embarked on creating a focal point for innovation in the city.
"Alongside development opportunities, they are encouraging collaboration between universities, health professionals and civic leaders to enable business and job creation and growth.
"This project is a landscape proposition at the heart of the proposed district, including sculptures built with solar panels and corten steel that will power street lighting and water features."
Student: Magdalena Maciejewska Course: BA(Hons) Landscape Architecture and Design Tutors: Alia Fadel and Mohammad Taleghani
Kirkstall Forge Sponge Park by Nisha Hawkridge
"The design of Kirkstall Forge Sponge Park on the River Aire in Leeds is driven by natural interventions. It creates a resilient landscape that responds to the impacts of flooding and climate change now and in the future.
"The park will support the river by protecting the surrounding settlements and filtering water runoff before it reaches the river; provide wildlife with biodiverse habitats along with clean river water which will promote aquatic life; and bring people together with both flooding and wildlife through natural strategies
"Kirkstall Forge Sponge Park will embrace flooding and proposes natural features that work with increased rainfall and not against it."
Student: Nisha Hawkridge Course: Master of Landscape Architecture Tutors: John Maccleary and Chris Royffe
Skeletons, Skins and Parallaxes: Laboratories of Politics and Kinetic Inhabitation by Amy Ferguson
"The Cinematic Commons studio seeks to depart from the current challenging situation – isolation protocols, domestic implosion and disabled public realms – to probe alternative possibilities of spatial conditions to resist the control, disconnection and dissolution of urban public spaces.
"While the connection of homes and streets in terms of political demonstrations has in recent decade been altered due to the capabilities of instant and mobile documentation, this recent period of COVID-19 lockdown further magnified the desire towards the combination of remote and in-situ political movements – the era of 'armchair activism.'
"This project aims to recognise the potential of linking a locally immersive and adaptive environment of work and occupancy with globalised political campaigns on worldwide environmental and ecological issues.
"Thus, the project creates 'laboratories of politics' equipped with architecturally kinetic mechanisms of 'skeletons, skins and parallaxes', drawing inspiration from the adaptability of film and theatre production sets and multi-locational virtual reality relaying technologies for future inhabitants.
"The project probes a series of protest architecture for activists and a hub of 'politics-as-lived' for the like-minded to research, campaign and form communities of affinities.
"The adaptability of the architectural, kinetic mechanism activates the protest territories, occupying and transforming spaces within the street, on structures and within buildings.
"Many parts of the architectural, kinetic system can be re-distributed in the protest territory and also move to remote locations yet keeping a synchronic relation with the base labs. The parallax of space across time extends to a parallax of multiple situations and modes of activisms."
Student: Amy Ferguson Course: Master in Architecture (MArch) Tutor: Doreen Bernath
A Post Pandemic Pocket Book to Re-connect a Faceless Society by Grace Butcher
"The ‘Post Pandemic Story Book’ takes the opportunity to reconnect society through participatory design. The project focuses on 'care' to explore modes of inhabitation for a multi-generational population, providing user-modified spatial layouts connected by generous garden spaces that allow for escape or chance meeting.
"The Liverpool North Docks site is restructured through a series of engineered timber frameworks which are then populated by a set of conditions and increasingly finer material systems that negotiate from the strategic to human scale. The architectural outcome is driven by user appropriation and demand for open-ended programmes of occupation, offering creative capabilities for an uncertain future."
Student: Grace Butcher Course: Master in Architecture (MArch) Tutor: Nick Tyson

Kalima - (Where Is The) Sunshine - reissue of 1981 7″ from Baltimore
For its third release, Parisian label Chuwanaga goes back to the past with the reissue of “(Where Is The) Sunshine” by Kalima, a really rare 7” originally released in 1981 and produced in Baltimore (Maryland) by African-American pianist and producer Derrick Amin. Part I on the A side and part II on the B side form a real journey, a beauty in its own style fusing jazz, soul and spirituality as well as political values. Back in the mid seventies Derrick Amin brought together young and talented musicians from his African-American Muslim community in Baltimore. He tells us: “all black music in America is a response to racism and slavery” and “(Where Is The) Sunshine” was their own answer, “a plaintiff query of one immerse in darkness. The darkness of lies, lies that deny the humanity, justice, and equality of people. It’s the impetus of this song”. He adds: “Kalima means « Word » or « Langage » in Arabic. The name was inspired by a quote from Imam W.D. Mohammad (the late Muslim American leader and erstwhile successor to Nation of Islam founder, Elijah Muhammad) who once said: “Words make people””. With its splendid vocal parts - thanks to lead vocalist Sabreen Shareef, a unique major-to-minor chord progression, subtil synthetiser melodies in the chorus and amazing electric piano and sax solos, it really is a very special release. It’s been discovered in a Motor City Drum Ensemble jazz set with Gilles Peterson at the J.A.W. Family Reunion in Berlin back in 2016 where he played it as the closing track of a wonderful musical journey through black music – which was the right occasion for a classic Gilles rewind and the occasion of a shared epiphany. Still, one must not forget its yet poetic still political message now shared once again with the world. The question asked by Kalima sadly still remains as relevant in 2018: Where is the sunshine ? creditsreleased June 6, 2018 Lead Vocals: Sabreen Shareef Background Vocals: Nadiyah Patterson, Narriman Alif and Jeannie Harris Lyrics: Nena Yasin and Derrick Amin Keyboards: Derrick Amin Flute: Leander Rahman Drums: Tony Douglass Bass: Andre Williams Percussions: James Royal Saxophone: Jerry Guitar: Mike License : Maxence Robinet Calligraphy : Islam Ibn Al Fadel Artwork: William James Thurman Remastered by Franck Merritt at The Carvery, London

15/5/2018: King Abdullah II, accompanied by Crown Prince Hussein, chaired a National Policies Council  meeting on developments in the Palestinian Territories after the US moved its embassy to Jerusalem and the Israeli aggression against unarmed Palestinians in Gaza.
King Abdullah expressed his utter condemnation and rejection of the violations and violence perpetrated by Israel against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, urging the international community to uphold its responsibilities and protect the Palestinian people.
His Majesty reaffirmed that Jordan will persist in supporting the Palestinians as they confront challenges, and will remain dedicated to ensuring the Palestinian people’s perseverance on their national soil.
The King instructed the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation to dispatch urgent medical and humanitarian aid to Gaza to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and enable them to overcome difficulties in the strip. (Source: Petra)
His Majesty also issued directives to evacuate those critically injured in Gaza to receive treatment at Royal Medical Services (RMS) hospitals.
On Monday, the King had instructed the General Command of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army to ensure that the RMS field hospital in Gaza is fully staffed, supplied and equipped to provide medical attention to Palestinians injured by Israeli aggression and violence.
Tuesday’s NPC meeting also covered Jordan’s steadfast position in rejection of moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, a decision that, His Majesty stressed, provokes Muslims and Christians around the world.
The King reiterated Jordan’s full support for the Palestinians in safeguarding their historical and legal rights to Jerusalem, and in their efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
His Majesty called for stepping up Arab, Islamic, and international efforts to safeguard the rights of Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims to Jerusalem, which is key to achieving peace and stability in the region.
The King noted that the issue of Jerusalem must be settled within the framework of a comprehensive solution, based on the two-state solution that leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
His Majesty stressed that the international community must uphold its responsibilities and take firm positions in support of achieving peace and resolving the Palestinian issue.
Prime Minister Hani Mulki, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Economic Affairs Jafar Hassan, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lt. Gen. Mahmoud Freihat, and General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Adnan Jundi, Adviser to His Majesty and Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas, and Adviser to His Majesty for Tribal Affairs Sharif Fawwaz Zaben Abdullah attended the meeting.
Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani, Interior Minister Samir Mubaideen, Public Security Directorate Director Maj. Gen. Fadel Hmoud, and General Directorate of the Gendarmerie Director Maj. Gen. Hussein Hawatmeh were also in attendance.

Masks and Tears: Shiites Mark Ashura at Iraq Shrines Despite Virus
Tens of thousands of Shiite Muslim pilgrims, some in masks and gloves, flooded Iraq's Karbala on Sunday to mark Ashoura, in one of the largest religious gatherings of the coronavirus era.
Ashoura, on the 10th day of the mourning month of Muharram, commemorates the killing of the Prophet Mohammed's grandson Hussein at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD -- the defining moment of Islam's confessional schism.
Typically, millions of Shiites from around the world flock to the holy city's golden-domed shrine where Hussein's remains are buried, to pray and cry, shoulder-to-shoulder.
But with coronavirus numbers spiking across the globe, this year's commemoration has been subdued.
"Honestly, this year is nothing like the millions-strong commemorations of other years," said Fadel Hakim, who was out early in the streets around the shrine, a blue medical mask cupping his chin.
"It stands out because there are so few people."
Shiite Muslim worshippers light candles outside the shrine of Imam Hussein during the festival of Ashoura in Karbala, Iraq, Aug. 30, 2020.
Small clusters of pilgrims gathered in the vast courtyards outside the shrine, wearing the customary black mourning clothes along with less traditional masks and gloves.
To be allowed in, people had their temperatures taken at gray gates resembling metal detectors.
Inside, signs indicated the required distance between worshippers as they pray and nylon sheets prevented people from kissing the walls, a traditional sign of reverence.
Praying for a 'miracle'
But in the enclave where Imam Hussein is buried, pilgrims pressed their unmasked faces up against the ornate grille separating them from the mausoleum.
Many visitors were crying or sniffling, wiping their faces with bare hands, gestures which could help the virus spread.
Despite directives by Iraq's health ministry to keep apart, worshippers stood in tight-knit circles to vigorously beat their chests, self-flagellate or make small incisions on their foreheads as signs of grief at Hussein's death.
They put on a dramatic re-enactment of his killing at the hands of Sunni Caliph Yazid's forces, then sprinted towards the shrine in the famed "Tuwairij run".
Some wore masks as they jogged under disinfectant mists, but otherwise no protective measures were taken.
Last year, a stampede broke out in Karbala that left at least 31 dead and dozens more wounded.
"This year will prove to the whole world that a pilgrimage to the Imam Hussein shrine is like a miracle. God willing, there won't be any new coronavirus cases," said Mohammad Abdulamir, a mask-less pilgrim.
Karbala governor Nassif al-Khitabi defended the safety measures put in place and hailed Sunday as a "success."
"Tens of thousands of pilgrims attended," he told journalists, or about 65 percent of the normal volume.
Authorities in Iraq, other Shiite-majority countries and the United Nations urged people to mark Ashoura at home.
Neighbouring Iran, which usually sends tens of thousands of pilgrims to Karbala, is the hardest-hit Middle Eastern country with over 21,000 coronavirus deaths.
It broadcast religious rituals on state television and even Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prayed alone, according to images published by his office.
In Sunni-majority Morocco, Ashoura is controversially marked as a celebration, not a day of mourning.
Efforts to get worshippers to stay home, however, ended in riots that wounded more than two dozen police officers and led to over 100 arrests.
'An inferno'
Afghanistan and Pakistan have reported a fall in new virus cases but security remained a top concern, as Ashoura has often been tainted by mass violence targeting Shiites.
In the southern port city of Karachi, an estimated 10,000 took part in the largest ceremony, many flagellating their bare backs using multiple blades at once while a heavy security presence kept close watch.
"It's not possible that anyone would be infected with the virus," said Israr Hussain Shah, a Shiite devotee in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
"Rather people come to heal and protect themselves, whether that's a virus of faith or a sickness," he said.
In many Shiite-majority countries, authorities have long urged their faithful to donate blood instead of self-flagellating.
This year, Bahrain implemented tougher screening at their blood drive, with health workers meticulously disinfecting the site.
Organisers also swapped their traditional free food distribution with door-to-door delivery instead.
In crisis-hit Lebanon, which has seen a severe coronavirus spike this month, powerful Shiite movements Hezbollah and Amal scrapped large Ashoura processions, although a parade was held in the southern town of Nabatiyeh.
Iraq has the second-highest regional toll with close to 7,000 deaths.
That kept Abu Ali home in the packed Baghdad district of Sadr City this Ashoura.
"My children, grandchildren and I go to Karbala every year, but this year we were afraid of corona," he said.
"Imam Hussein wouldn't want us to throw ourselves into an inferno."
