Could you elaborate on jughead and his bad Moby Dick takes?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/445f6894f5d59c6a666c8f26d9ca6617/a77dc8432b1a8f76-56/s540x810/590f0324c1035ec30bc74187b729d182a52b0953.jpg)
he's basically representing the most boring and smug "what you see is what you get, authorial intent is the only way to interpret a story, and also the author is ALWAYS upfront about their intent with the public" angle on literary analysis when he argues that it's pointless to try to read subtext into the book. famously a crummy way to read moby dick and a crummy way to read riverdale and all the context around it as an archie comics adaptation. no metaphorical readings allowed unless the original creator says it's OK??! OK!!
it's a viewpoint he explicitly grows out of in season seven. the jughead of the more character-optimistic s7 reboot becomes very invested in metaphor and subtext and the idea that someone could write about a milkman murderer but make him something else to skirt censorship and then deny the connection publicly. (and also veronica critiques the unintentional incel undertones of his writing and he needed that ❤️)
#so I guess it's less about moby dick than about literary analysis in general. but I take it especially personally bc I love moby dick#it is fun in context bc jughead that season is such a like. hardy boy style guy dropped into an ambitious literary mystery#he doesn't match their vibe at all. he doesn't even believe in symbolism!!#riverdale#jughead jones#*ambiguous not ambitious. though I guess the secret history is also ambitious

This was the introduction of the term “Prayer Captain” here in 1943′s Little Moby’s Post:
For the past two years Dr. Jones has given the school a word as the slogan or watchword for the year. The words thus far have been "steady" and ready." The word chosen for this year is "Pray." and there has been a greater emphasis laid on prayer than any other year. The entire student body is organized under "Prayer Captains," so that every student meets for prayer at least once during the day. We know that this new word means high ground and much opposition, but we know that great victories lie ahead this year. Won't you adopt that word with us?

any nonfic book recs by lesbian authors? want to get into more feminist readings. whatever ya got :)
Hi! we don’t actively track down every author’s sexuality when we purchase their books so I don’t want to 100% guarantee when it’s possible some of these folks may be bi or some other flavor of queer, but I do imagine a lot of our non-fiction that’s about lesbians is also by lesbians, here are a few;
The Lesbian South by Jamie Harker
Lesbian Love Story: A Memoir in Archives by Amelia Possanza
No Modernism Without Lesbians by Diana Souhami
Boots of Leather Slippers of Gold by Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy & Madeline D. Davis
Mouths of Rain: An Anthology of Black Lesbian Thought by Briona Simone Jones
A Burst of Light (and anything else really) by Audre Lorde
Moby Dyke by Krista Burton
Rust Belt Femme by Raechel Anne Jolie
We Walk Alone by Ann Aldrich
& tons more!

The Voice of the Alumni used to be called Little Moby’s Post back in the day. This was posted in 1945:
Just to whet dull memories, let us remind you of the recent actions taken in regard to Alumni dues. If you are an Alumnus or Alumna of Bob Jones College your annual dues are $2.50. If you have married a graduate, that is you are both Alumni, your annual dues are $4.00 for both of you. The $1.00 saving is to reward you for a successful search while at the college. All students who have not graduated but would like to receive the college news may secure the paper for $1.00 per year. Please investigate your financial standing. Address your inquiries and payments to Ted Mercer, our treasurer.

Books that I own that I should get to this year if possible:
Alternative Alcott and Work by Louisa May Alcott
Various books by Margery Allingham
Shirley by Charlotte Bronte (have owned this for over a decade but been too daunted by its length to tackle it)
More Annotated Alice
Various books by Agatha Christie
Man and Wife by Wilkie Collins
Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens (another scary brick)
Various Dostoevsky books
The Last Courts of Europe: Royal Family Album 1860-1914 by Jeffery Finestone
Cousin Phillis and Other Tales and Ruth by Elizabeth Gaskell
Between Walls and Between Cases by W. R. Gingell
The Child from the Sea by Elizabeth Goudge
Various works by Nathaniel Hawthorne (I got interested in trying to read his works while I visited MA. I had to read The Scarlet Letter in high school, which was unpleasant thanks to our curriculum's pharisaic approach to literature, but I want to revisit it and encounter others as an adult and draw my own conclusions)
Various books by nineteenth-century author Mary J. Holmes (picked up at an antique store including Millbank, which is referred to in the Little House books)
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales by Washington Irving
The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson (gift from a friend)
Year of the Griffin by Diana Wynne Jones
The Last Empress by Greg King
The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi (a secret pal gift from someone who read my remark on the form that I found it hard to describe my taste in books succinctly, got hung up on the puzzling word "succinct," and scoured the internet for Succinct Books, bless her heart)
Moby-Dick by Herman Melville
Bloody Jack by L. A. Meyer
Voices in the Night by Stephen Millhauser
His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett (picked up in a shop because I thought the title was funny; I am not planning to dive into the associated series)
The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe
Robin: Tim Drake Compendium One (or, as I call it, The Tim Tome)
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
Splendors and Glooms by Laura Amy Schlitz
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot (picked this up at a booksale because my sister had had to read it for multiple college classes and I was curious)
The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet by Bernie Su (picked up at a booksale forever ago)
A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain
Various Jules Verne books
The Friendly Persuasion by Jessamyn West
Doomsday Book and Blackout (and All Clear and Cross Talk if I can acquire them) by Connie Willis
The Sinclair's Mysteries series by Katherine Woodfine
Zero Hour: Part One (and Part Two if I can snag it when it's released later this year)
