Explore the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Memorial Park
If you are considering a great tourist attraction center, then one cannot underestimate the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile. This historic park is where the landmark WWII ship USS Alabama (BB-60), the most decorated battleship of the Pacific War with nine battle stars, is located.
Discover the USS Alabama
Some famous ship identifiers that various visitors commonly refer to include the USS Alabama, mainly called the 'Mighty A. Most battleships are open to the public; thus, you can move around the hull and look into the engine, the quarters, and even the command triangle called the bridge.
There is a museum on this ship, and most of its exhibits are meant to exhibit the historical background of the boat and the gallant sailors who crewed it.

Not so to say that the museum has an African and decorative art collection that is detailed and diverse, providing a harmonious view of artistic work all over the world.

The Oakleigh Garden District
The Oakleigh Garden District is acknowledged as one of Mobile's most beautiful zones. This place has a historical and preserved building. The House MuseumØit is an excellent example of a Greek Revival-style building.
On display at the museum are items that tell much about the lives of the people in Mobile during the 19th century, and there is always room for guided tours. The district is characterized by tree-shaded streets and houses that appear to be of significant architectural importance and thus make for a nice walking area.
The De Tonti Square Historic District
The De Tonti Square Historic District is the second place to be visited. This district derived its name from Henri de Tonti, a French explorer and the founder of Mobile.
It exhibits the Italianate, Greek Revival, and Federal Square style architecture of the buildings built in the 19th century. Due to the old architectural design and the red brick-paved streets, most of the buildings in the district look very beautiful and evoke a bygone era.
The Church Street East Historic District
The Church Street East Historic District is another example of Mobile's rich history. This area has old plantation homes and old churches, among the oldest of which is the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, a Gothic Revival.
The district has a lot of history and architecture of splendid buildings, which would be attractive for locals and tourists alike.

Went to The Carnival Museum in Mobile, Al, a while back now and on the way there drew Brahms Heelesire and Vincent Sinclair in special looks. I was worried they weren’t very stock looking till we got to the museum and saw the costumes are really up to what ever. They just tended to be sparkly and detailed, etc. There was even a Santa suit one.
But yeah. Chibis included and colored based on their colors from their default clothes.

12 Ravenloft Realms, 12 quests:
Barovia: A dryad in Svalich woods punched a vampire through his chest, almost staking his heart. In retaliation the vampire severed the dryad's arm and then ran away, he probably died somewhere. The Dryad would like her arm back and is willing to give a reward.
Bluetspur: Welcome to the Dangerous Knowledge Quarantine District, citizen! You will be working alongside Grimlocks to transcribe and find applications for possibly cursed knowledge. This arcane lore could kill the entire illithid psionic network or any foolish mortals, so caution is mandatory. As you were listening to this message, knowledge of a simplified version of Qualith has been uploaded to your brain.
Borca: Ivana Boritsi has a acquired a list of Ivan Dilisnya's sleeper agents and needs them assassinated. These agents are animated toys who look and act just like real people. Nobody else knows or realizes these people are just toys, least of all the toys themselves. Show no mercy for these impersonators and Ivana might just find you interesting.
The Carnival: Redcaps have been soaking their caps in the viscera drawn from Professor Pacali's Hall of Horrors and are undergoing strange mutations. Eliminate them and the Carnival will go to any realm of Ravenloft that you desire.
Darkon: Alcio "Baron" Metus needs an artifact recovered from Castle Avernus in Lychgate. It's a standard cursed glowing sword, can absorb magic or the life force from it's wielder. Grab it and haul ass back to Martira Bay.
Dementliu: No one wants to admit it but visitors have been disappearing from the Bonniville Museum of the Sea. Also, no one wants to admit that the new creatures on display are disturbingly familiar. On behalf of the Lord Governor could you figure out why that is?
Falkovnia: A rumor has been going around that Vladeska Drakov's birthday is coming up and everyone is making plans and gifts for the feared warlord. Either help Drakov stop this party from happening by executing people or join the secret planning committee.
Har'Akir: A band of wandering tabaxi have rolled into Muhar. Everyone loves their music and art. They have crafted a legendary magical musical instrument and will trade it for an urn filled with water from the Red Oasis.
Hazlan: Construction of a mobile stilt-legged refinery has finished in Sly-Var. The magical construct has to be escorted to The Brew where it will extract useful alchemical compounds. The route will be dangerous and non-magical mercenaries are being hired. Some apprentices have muttered that the refinery might have a mind of it's own...
I'Cath: The city is being invaded by Yatsukahagi (functionally Chitine from Volo's Guide to Monster) from another dark realm. Tsien Chiang's is annoyed at having to use her magic, Jiangshi, and wits to combat this threat while her great city still isn't finished. The spider-people believe a fugitive has fled from their realm and has taken shelter somewhere in the city.
Kalakeri: Help some Yuan-Ti purebloods escape Arijani and Reeva's clutches and get them back to Naga Island and their people. These snakeskins happen to have valuable information about Ramya's undead condition.
Kartakass: A trading card game called "Wolves and Deer" has become popular throughout the realm. This irks Harkon Lukas because it's distracting people from his performances. He wants to find the printer making these cards and kill them. Fanatics of this card game want adventurers to stop him.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (née Gottlieb; 15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of gender and love of her time. These works were classified as "lesbian erotica" at times and many were inspired by her spouse, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
Gottlieb was born in Hammlev, Denmark, in a conservative family. She had three siblings but was the only child to live to adulthood. She enjoyed art at a young age and began training. Her family moved to Hobro and later she moved to Copenhagen to pursue her education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
Wegener's work was often of confident and elegant woman performing a variety of activities in either a Renaissance inspired style, Art Nouveau or Art Deco style. The images tended to show women posing or participating in artistic endeavors such as theatre, literature, and dance. Later on in France, Wegener created work showing women displaying seductive power or engaging in sexual activities. This risqué art was considered "lesbian erotica" and published in illicit art books. Along with shifting how women are represented in art, Wegener also challenged gender and sex identity roles in her work. She did this in small ways, such as drawing men with slender bodies and soft lines, or by painting her transgender partner, Lili Elbe.
Her career as an artist began to mobilize after graduating from the Academy in 1907 and 1908 when she made appearances in the Politiken newspaper. She then was the center of a controversy called the Peasant Painter Dispute after one of her 1906 works, Portrait of Ellen von Kohl, was rejected from the exhibitions of Den frie Udstilling and Charlottenborg due to the style of the piece. This piece caused concerns of Italian Renaissance plagiarism and split opinions of it showing a weak individual or an elegant beautiful woman. Gottlieb never got involved in the debate. The portrait was displayed by the Winkel and Magnussen's art dealership and received attention that boosted her career as an artist.
Wegener won two sketching competitions in the Politiken newspaper. She was known for her illustrations created for advertisements and was also a portrait painter. She did art in Paris, but was less successful in Denmark, where people found her work very different and strange as it often portrayed her husband as a woman.
In 1912, Wegener and her partner, Lili Elbe, moved to Paris, France. In Paris, Wegener began to push the boundaries in her artwork by creating more provocative paintings of women engaged in sexual activities and seductive positions. She often painted herself with Lili Elbe or Lili alone either portrayed as a man or a woman. Her work gained her attention and she was able to throw parties and experience notorious fame. Along with this, her work in the fashion industry took off as she illustrated for magazines such as Fantasio, Vogue, and La Vie Parisienne. Her illustrations were used in a wide range of platforms from beauty advertisements to political anti-German images in the Le Matin and the La Baïonnette during World War II. In 1925, she won two gold medals and a bronze one for her artwork in competition at the very famous 1925 World Fair in Paris. She befriended Ulla Poulsen (1905–2001), a Danish ballerina, who became a frequent model for her paintings. She and her spouse were also close friends with artist Rudolph Tegner and his wife Elna.
She met fellow artist Lili Elbe – then known as Einar Wegener – at art school. They married in 1904, when Gerda was 18 and Lili was 22. They travelled through Italy and France, eventually settling in Paris in 1912. The couple immersed themselves in the Bohemian lifestyle of the time, befriending many artists, dancers and other figures from the artistic world, often attending carnivals and other public festivals.
During this time Elbe began to wear female clothing, and adopted her female name and persona, becoming Gerda Wegener's favourite model, in paintings of beautiful women with haunting almond-shaped eyes dressed in chic fashions. In 1913, the art world was shocked when they learned that the model who had inspired her depictions of petite femmes fatales was in fact her husband.
As Elbe adopted her female identity, Gerda Wegener commonly introduced her as Einar Wegener's cousin when she was dressed in female attire. In 1930 Elbe underwent one of the first sex reassignment surgeries. As Danish law at the time did not recognize marriage between two women, their marriage was annulled in October 1930 by King Christian X. Elbe died in 1931 from complications of the surgery.
In 1931, Wegener married Italian officer, aviator, and diplomat Major Fernando Porta and moved with him to Morocco. She divorced Porta in 1936 and returned to Denmark in 1938 for unknown reasons. She held her last exhibition in 1939, but by this time, her artwork was out of style as the simpler Functionalism had become more popular in the 1930s. She had no children, lived by herself in relative obscurity, and began to drink heavily. She faced financial instability and kept an income by selling hand-painted postcards.
She died on July 28, 1940, in Frederiksberg, Denmark, shortly after Nazi Germany invaded the country. Her small estate was auctioned, and there was only a small obituary printed in the local paper.
Over the years, beginning with the literary success of a book about Elbe's and her lives together, and further with the release of a movie based on the book, the story of the couple gained a cult following in Denmark and around the world. Their artwork has been rediscovered, and exhibited and auctioned with success. A special exhibition of Gerda Wegener's was on display at the Arken Museum of Modern Art until January 2017, followed by a travelling exhibit of her art shown around the world.
The Danish Girl, David Ebershoff's 2000 novel about them was an international best-seller and was translated into a dozen languages. Gerda Wegener is portrayed by Swedish actress Alicia Vikander in the 2015 film The Danish Girl, also starring British actor Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe. The film received some criticism for obscuring the actual story of a historical trans person and omitting certain facts and for being based on a fictional book that does not tell the true story of Einar and Gerda Wegener. The topic of Gerda Wegener's own sexuality, which she never talked about publicly, is not mentioned in the film or book.

illicit affairs | Chapter 1, Buzzcut Season
AO3 Link | 4,000 words (approx) | Chapter 2
Story Summary: Commander Fox thought that his only love would be the Republic. He certainly never thought that a small blue senator would change that. But if the Republic wants to make him a martyr, it should be for something he believes in.
“They can’t do that.”
“I’m afraid they can.”
“I won’t let them.” Fox shook his head incredulously and Thire bit back a laugh.
“I don’t think you have the authority to do that, sir.” The Chancellor had made the request himself.
“We have a perfectly fine atrium here-”
“Sir, there’s still blast marks on the wall from the bounty hunters.”
“- I don’t know why we need to host it in the Galactic Museum. Do you know how many sniper perches there are in just the main hall?”
Thire thought back to the holomap he had been looking at five minutes prior, before Fox had commed him in practical hysterics. “Last I checked it was seventeen.”
“Seventeen.” Fox slammed his hand down on the device before him and a holomap of the Galactic Museum flicked to life before them. Thire noted that some light renovations had been done in one of the exhibition rooms, he would have to adjust his current plan. “Seventeen perches in one hall and they want to take over the entire museum.”
“I’m sure that the 501st would donate some of their ARCs to our cause if you asked.”
“Thire, I’m considering it.” Fox groaned and leaned into his hands. “At this point we may as well comm Cody’s Bad Batch.” He’d heard that they’d ended up with one of the 501st’s ARC Troopers and had an expert marksman on the team. But any of them would have different uniforms than the Guard and the Chancellor had been prioritizing the Guard’s visual conformity as of late.
“You two do remember that we have authority over both the Senate Guard and the Red Guard, right?” Commander Stone walked in without knocking, carrying three mugs of caf. “Spread out the Senate Guard and our boys equally around the rooms and have a detachment of Red Guard at each of the entrances and around the Chancellor.”
“Yes, but the Senate Guard is incompetent and corrupt at best.” Thire gratefully accepted a mug from Stone.
“So are the senators.” Fox scoffed as he accepted the other mug from Stone. “Name an honest senator off the top of your head that’s not part of the Delegation of the Two-thousand, not that all of them are honest either.”
“Representative Jar Jar Binks of course.” Stone grinned as he leaned against the back of Fox’s chair.
“First, he’s not a senator. Second, don’t get me started, Stone.” Fox sighed and took a long sip of his caf, looking into it as if the answers would swirl to the surface. “We’ll mobilize the Blue and Red Guards. Thire, get me the optimal force placement by tomorrow morning. Stone, prep the bomb squad and get Sergeant Hound up to date. I want him on site. I’ll inform the Chancellor.”
“Another thing, Fox.” Stone brought out a holopad that he’d had tucked under his arm. “Chairman Papanoida has requested an additional security detail for the Pantoran Senator at this event.”
“Senator Chuchi, again?” Thire shook his head in amazement. “She’s going to give Amidala a run for her credits. Have you met the senator, Fox?”
“I’m about to. I’ll take three of the men and lead the security detail myself.” Fox took the holopad from Stone and placed it by his helmet on the desk.
“You’ll like her, she’s the one that dropped off those sweets last month.” Stone said, rising from the back of Fox’s chair. “Brilliant young woman, prime target for assassination.”
“I’m familiar with her file, Stone.” Fox closed the holomap and rose from his chair, followed shortly by Thire. “Let’s get this shit-show on the road.”
“Don’t let the Chancellor hear you call his gala a shit-show.” Thire said.
Fox shrugged. “Fine. Poodoo-parade.”
---
The members of the Coruscant Guard were fond of Senator Riyo Chuchi. She had always been nice to them, looked at them-not past them- when walking in the Senate halls, and took the time to remember their names and greet them. Commander Thorn had spoken very highly of her to Fox. But Thorn wasn’t here anymore. While Thire had risen to the occasion of his promotion, Fox was still grieving Thorn’s loss. The entire Guard was grieving all the brothers they had lost on Scipio. An entire squad, all because of one man. But that was how Fox ended up running the senatorial detail for Senator Chuchi. Thorn had usually been the one running the show on all protection details, but while Thire was adjusting to his heightened responsibility Fox had taken over some of Thorn’s duties.
Few senators would’ve been able to pick out the commander of the Coruscant Guard out of a line-up. Impressive, given that his was now the only truly unique armor in the Guard. Of course they’d heard about him, how could they have not? He was the most highly decorated clone trooper in the GAR. But the names and faces of clone troopers didn’t come easily to non-clones. That is why Commander Fox was surprised to be approached by an unfamiliar face as he walked from the offices of the Coruscant Guard to that of the Chancellor.
“Commander Fox?”
Fox looked up from the holopad that he used to avoid eye contact with the senators. “Ma’am?”
“Senator Riyo Chuchi, Commander.” She held out her hand and he took it. “I heard that you will be leading my security detail this weekend.”
“You heard correctly, Senator. Though very quickly.” Did he need to check his office for bugs? It had been two days since the last scan. Perhaps that was too long.
“I just passed Commander Stone.” She smiled softly and Fox understood why all of his guardsmen were charmed by her. He had been told that his and many of his brother’s eyes were golden in the right light, but her eyes were downright gold. He felt his breath catch in his throat and was glad that she couldn’t see his look of wonder through the mask. Fortunately, his training prepared him for high-stress situations, and he was able to regain his composure quickly.
“Of course, our local chatterbox.”
She chuckled. “Really?”
“No.” He smiled, and though she couldn’t see it he felt that his body language probably conveyed it to her. If she could remember the names of his men, then surely she could read their body language through the helmets.
She laughed again, then turned her eyes down. “I’m very sorry, but I must be on my way.” She looked up into the black visor of his helmet. “I look forward to seeing you this weekend, Commander Fox.” Then she was off before Fox could respond. Suddenly, the gala was not entirely a poodoo-parade, but a rather enticing event. It was Fox’s job to protect the citizens of Coruscant, but he had never really wanted to protect someone until now. He suddenly understood why beings owned pets or had children. He had now only known Senator Chuchi for a few fleeting moments, but he would give anything to ensure her safety. He didn’t set off again until her retreating figure was no longer visible in the crowd.
---
“How’s the crap-carnival going, Commander?” Jek asked as soon as the door closed behind Fox.
“It’s going well, Jek. Thank you very much for volunteering for Senator Chuchi’s security detail.”
“You ran into her didn’t you, Fox?” Thire was where he had been when Fox left. In the corner of the main office-space in front of a holomap of the Galactic Museum. Fox noted that it was now the updated one.
“Are you also volunteering, Commander Thire?”
“What did you think?” Thire leaned forward onto the table before him, eyes on Fox. Every guardsman in the room turned to look at their commanding officer. Fox look around at them and said nothing. “So, you too would throw yourself in front of a blaster bolt for her.” A light laugh, quickly stifled, broke out across the room. One of the men couldn’t muffle his laughter in time and found himself fixed by the blank stare of Fox’s helmet.
“Shut up, Thire. And thank you, Impulse, for volunteering. Thire you may surrender your position to another volunteer at any time if your presence is required elsewhere.”
“With all due respect, sir. I wouldn’t miss this for the galaxy.” Fox knew that it would be something that Thire was more comfortable with. Thire had yet to command event security and starting off with the entire Senate body was a little too much. Two commanders for a single senator’s security detail may have been overkill, but at least it would put them both on the floor.
The next few days were a blur. Commander Stone was placed in charge of event security, and while Commander Thire was part of Senator Chuchi’s detail he was also placed in charge of watching the floor. The Guard was rearranged, with more senior members being moved to the gala detail and more junior members being shuffled to fill the vacant positions for the time being. This was one of the upsides of the Chancellor’s new uniform rules. With an identical body they could rearrange themselves however they wished, and no one would know the difference. Thire, who had stuck with his regulation uniform despite the promotion, found it to be very convenient. He was becoming a fast favorite of the Chancellor, and the ability to swap himself in and out with his men as he pleased was agreeable to him. He still found it so even as he lined up with Jek and Impulse as they waited for Fox to finalize the Chancellor’s final security briefing. Without knowing his name or CT number, he looked like just another trooper in the detail. Tonight, it would allow him to run security on the senator and get a better feeling for the room than Fox would be able to, considering how his inverted armor would stand out from the trio of white. Though Fox would have a greater intimidation factor than he would. Altogether, Thire doubted that something could go wrong in the next few hours.
---
Riyo stepped back from the mirror to cast a final look over her appearance. Padme had been the one to pick out her dress, a full length light blue gown that fell over her skin in soft pillows of fabric. The folds that appeared to be formfitting concealed thick plates of body armor that covered her torso. Very practical, very Padme. Riyo tucked a stray hair back behind her ear, not that it would matter after the speeder ride to the gala, and ensured that she’d grabbed the right tube of dark purple lipstick for her purse. She felt very regal.
Her doorbell chimed.
Checking over the contents of her purse one last time, she nearly ran to answer the door. Opening it she found four clones standing before her.
“Commander Fox, Commander Thire, Impulse, and I’m not sure I’ve ever caught your name.”
“Jek, ma’am.”
“Nice to meet you, Jek.” She stepped out of the door, closing it behind her before setting off towards the apartment complex landing platform. “Thank you all for your protection. I believe that Chairman Papanoida is merely being paranoid, but I feel much safer with you here.”
“Always a pleasure, Senator.” Said Thire, falling behind her in the escort. “If you don’t mind my saying so, you look stunning tonight.”
She giggled. “Thank you, Commander. I didn’t know that clones ever considered looks.”
“You wouldn’t know if you only knew Fox, ma’am.” Jek said, looking to the right at his commander. “He’s regulation cut, a good boy. No tattoos or fancy hair.”
Fox looked left at Jek. “Tattoos are the mark of a clone with too much spare time. Are you trying to tell me you’re bored, Jek? I can pass that on to the janitorial staff if you like.  You wouldn’t imagine the things that they find in bathrooms. Could be useful to have a Guard member on the team.”
“With all due respect, sir. I’d rather lick the ground of the Undercity.”
From behind Riyo, Impulse spoke up. “I’m sure the commander could arrange that too! He could prepare your medical papers ahead of time.”
Riyo shuddered, though she was still grinning. Maybe having an escort for the night wouldn’t be as boring as she thought. “I’m sure medical would be preferable to cleaning up after one of Senator Orn Free Taa’s parties.”
Fox scoffed. “No comment.”
When they reached the speeder, Jek was the first one in. He held out his hand to Riyo and she took it, accepting the boost up into the vehicle. Impulse immediately followed her and the two clones took a seat on each side of her in the middle row. Thire and Fox still stood next to the speeder, and she watched Fox take off his helmet and hand it over to Thire before he ducked under the vehicle.
Thire caught her stare. “Additional anti-theft devices, ma’am. Makes placing undercarriage bombs harder, but you also have to turn the damn thing off.”
“Does the benefit outweigh the trouble, Commander?”
Fox popped back up, running a hand through his regulation hair, loosening a few curls. “Not at all, Senator.” She took in his face. As Jek had said, he had no tattoos, visible ones at least, but a few white lines of scar tissue crossed his throat. He looked tired. Fox took his helmet back from Thire and vaulted over the speeder door into the driver’s seat, taking a drink of water from a small canteen at his hip before putting his helmet back on. Thire sat behind her, facing backwards. Shielded on all sides, she relaxed. She had a feeling that the commander of the Coruscant Guard was what many beings called a ‘defensive driver’.
“Buckle up or be bucked.” Jek kicked the back of Fox’s chair lightly.
“That was one time.” Fox mumbled, pulling off the landing pad to join the lanes of air traffic.
“One time?” Riyo exclaimed.
“I saw our target and went for him, Senator. I assumed that any of my men would have the good mind to buckle up before going on a high-speed chase for a bounty hunter.”
“I almost died, Fox.”
“But you didn’t.” Fox made a sound as if he was going to say more, then turned his attention back to the traffic.
“Commander Thorn saved me, grabbed my ankle just in time.” Jek mumbled, the helmet vocabulator barely picking up the sound.
“I heard about Scipio, I’m sorry for your loss. He was a good man.” Riyo remembered him as the man who had once fully taken over her apartment with troopers after a threat on her life and personally installed security sensors on all her windows and doors. She’d ended up sleeping on the couch that night while he secured her bedroom. Afterwards, she had run into him often in the Senate halls, and always with a crack about how her window frame had never been the same.
Fox sighed. “He was the best of us.”
Thire was the first one out of the vehicle when they arrived at the Galactic Museum, followed shortly by Impulse and Riyo. She gratefully accepted his hand as she exited the speeder, heels and speeders never seemed to get along, and was followed shortly afterwards by Jek and Fox.
“You know the drill, Senator Chuchi. Enjoy your evening and pretend that we’re not watching your every move.”
“Thank you, Commander. I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy your company tonight.”
The gala was a beautiful event. Held in honor of the founding of the Republic, all of the Senators and well-to-do of the city had been invited. Riyo spotted many beings who she knew only by name or by reputation amongst the crowd. She was not the only one with an escort, and she found a little comfort in that she wouldn’t stand out for being accompanied by the clones. Though the clones themselves stood out. She caught more than one being staring at the red-armor commander at her right side, and she couldn’t help a small twinge of jealousy. She wondered if she could convince one of the boys to dance with her. Perhaps not Thire or Impulse, they seemed busy scanning the floor for threats, but she was sure that Jek wouldn’t mind and she wondered if she could even convince Commander Fox to take her out on the floor. Then she realized how much she would stand out for dancing with a clone, red or white, and how that could negatively impact their positions in the Coruscant Guard. Many of the beings here were the type that didn’t like to be reminded of the humanity of the clones and she didn’t want to bring their outbursts down on her companions. She stuck to the edges of the rooms instead, where she could find many more senators who were not comfortable with mingling with the rich in the middle of the floor. Here she found solace in discussing some of the exhibits with those she considered to be her allies in the Senate, and occasionally with the clones if she noticed something intriguing in passing. They wouldn’t speak to her unprompted but would gladly respond when spoken to.
Towards the end of the night the crowds thinned out and she and her escort walked freely through even the middle of the rooms.
“There was an exhibit on the ice formations of Hoth that I would like to see again. Would that be suitable, Commander Fox?”
“Yes, ma’am. If you take a right before the mock mythosaur there is a shortcut that we can take if it pleases you.” Of course he knew the layout.
She weaved her way through the remaining guests, noting that it was mostly senators in this room, and passed through the small passage that Fox had recommended. This hall, Natural Formations of Wonder, was mostly empty save for a small crowd gathering around the volcanic glass from Mustafar. Across the room, there was a temperature-controlled case containing the formations she wanted to see.
“I didn’t see ice until I was thirteen, you know.” She spoke as they crossed the room. “Pantora is marshy by nature. My father took me to Scipio with him when he served as the Pantoran Senator. I’d never seen anything like it before.”
“We can relate, Senator.” Thire spoke up. “Kamino, our homeworld, is oceanic. Fox thought that the Kaminii were lying about trees for the longest time.”
A huff of air that could have been part of a laugh escaped Fox’s vocabulator. “I’m still not too sure about forests.”
“You need to get out more.” Jek reached over Riyo to give Fox’s shoulder a light shove. “Breathe the fresh air.”
“Never heard of it.” Fox shook his head lightly and went back to scanning the room. Riyo felt a stab of pity for the commander and made a note that she would have to find a way to get him off-world with her somehow, if only so he could experience fresh air.
“Do you miss Kamino?” She ventured, keeping her gaze on the ice crystals before her so that none of the men felt that they were being put on the spot.
There was silence around her until Impulse spoke. “I don’t think any of us have that option, Senator.”
“Well, if you could be on any planet in the galaxy right now, which one would you choose?” More silence greeted her question.
“Naboo.” Thire said, breaking the tension. “It’s nice there. I don’t think that we clones view Kamino as you view Pantora, Senator Chuchi. It’s the closest thing we have to a home, but it’s not ours. Personally speaking, my home is my brothers. It’s not tied to a place. I don’t miss my homeworld because my home is always with me, waking up at the ass-crack of dawn.”
Riyo laughed, turning away from the ice. “I believe I am ready to depart, before dawn finds us here instead of in our beds.”
“As you wish, Senator.”
They started back across the room the same way they had spent the evening, Fox and Jek at her side, Thire and Impulse behind her. But now there was no crowd to push through, and no chance of one as the group admiring the Mustafarian glass had departed. Riyo let her gaze wander around the room, taking in the natural marvels one last time. Her attention was grabbed by the sudden turn of Fox’s helmet as he looked up into the catwalks of the vaulted ceiling. She followed his gaze, but saw nothing.
“Senator!” Fox stepped back, grabbed her by the elbows and pulled her to the ground. The force brought her to her knees, and her head was pushed down as Fox covered her body with his own. He pulled her in with his left arm so that she was pressed against him, fully shielded from behind. Jek knelt in front of them, rifle drawn over Fox’s shoulder as he scanned the room around them. It was silent. Riyo watched Fox slowly bring a pistol out from its holster with his right hand. Thire and Impulse swept through the room, with the former going up into the catwalks. They gave the all clear minutes later as Thire rejoined the group. Fox and Jek eased away from Riyo, and she sat up straight. Fox didn’t move from behind her, and she stayed put as the four guards continued to visually scan the room. Then there was a flash of movement on her right. The sniper was fast, but Fox was faster. His hand had never left her side, and now he brought her close to himself as he twisted his body down to shield her.
The was a whistle and a crack. Fox’s grip around Riyo’s waist faltered and the two crashed into the ground. Riyo couldn’t help the whimper that escaped her lips, and Fox pulled her closer to his body to continue to shield her, curling around and over her tiny form. Another shot rang out and Fox clutched her even tighter to his chest. Her hands clung to his arm as if the touch would save her life. Perhaps it would. Two of the men, she couldn’t tell their boots apart, moved to stand over her and Fox, rifles raised towards where the shots had come from. There wasn’t a third shot.
One of the men standing above them raised his comm. “This is Commander Thire requesting a medic in Natural Formations, Commander Fox is down. Activate Contingency Theta.”
“Get her out of here.” Fox mumbled. She could feel the vibrations in his chest against the back of her head as he spoke. His grip on her waist relaxed. Riyo realized that he had been hit.
“Yes, sir.” Jek said. With Impulse and Thire standing guard Jek reached down and pulled Riyo from Fox’s grip.
“No, we can’t leave him!” She protested. She tried to pull away, but Jek’s grip on her arm was strong and soon she was surrounded by plastoid as she was taken away. Between Thire and Impulse she could see the motionless form of Commander Fox behind them, a black hole burning between his shoulder blades, another at his waist. She let out a quiet sob at the sight.
“He did his duty, Senator; you must do yours.” Thire said as the three men swept her away from the room.

Teatro del Mondo: An Odyssey
The Venice Biennale is an increasing magnet for professionals and laypersons alike, as evidenced by a stampede of hundreds of thousands of visitors quickly rolling over exhibitions in Giardini dell’Arsenale, and an exponentially growing number of various minor events during the Mostra.

People from all over the world travel to Venice to visit the Biennale. But it happened just once that a pavilion intended for Biennale went in the opposite direction. The motives for this voyage were reported on the sidelines of an exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia 1979-1980: The Theater of the World Singular Building. Maurizio Scaparro curated the show that was held in Ca’ Giustinian in 2010.

It is always difficult to judge a piece of great contemporary architecture: From the vantage point of present, we usually lack proper temporal distance. But 30 years after its implementation, Il Teatro del Mondo (The World Theater) - a floating building designed by Aldo Rossi for the architectural Biennale once anchored in front of Punta della Dogana and created in 1979 for the Venice and the Stage Space exhibition, grew to become an architectural icon.

British theatre director Edward Gordon Craig once said: “There is something so human and so poignant to me in a great city at a time of the night when there are no people about and no sounds. It is dreadfully sad until you walk till six o’clock in the morning. Then it is very exciting.”[1] In his stage designs, Craig used architectural language to design and articulate the relationships in space between movement, sound, line, light, and color, enabling actors to assume positions and spatial relationships that they could use in ordinary urban life.
A parallel to Rossi's architectural project is unmistakable - was that a coincidence or intention?

Its legendary trip to Dubrovnik, (the theater was ferried in the summer of 1980 to the local Theatre Festival) is exciting and feels like reading Homer’s Odyssey. In the best tradition of Venetian mobility, Rossi wrote: "Just the image of Venice, a synthesis of gothic and misty landscapes and oriental inserts or transpositions, fixes the capital of the city on the water. Therefore, of the possible passages, not only physical or topographical, between the two worlds. Even the Rialto bridge is a passage, a market, a theater. "[2]

Today, when we think about Venice, we conjure up a small peninsula in the northern Adriatic. It is hard to imagine that Venetians were able to rule such a vast cultural space. The key was their legendary mobility. They were always on the move. The Republic built on the water developed its eclectic cultural influence through its enduring presence in the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. The city was the final destination for the most important cultural and caravan route between the Orient and the Occident. No wonder The World Theater united in itself several references: Renaissance and Elizabethan theaters, lighthouse architecture, Venetian floating architecture, and temporary structures built for the carnival. [3] As Nadine Labedade wrote "Thus, it is the typology of the city that creates the scenario. And this mobile theater-boat became a fragment of the urban history, a quasi-metaphysical image tasked with representing architecture.”
The revision of modernity - as an abstract, functionalist, and timeless architectural language - was a common denominator of the Tendenza, the group formed by Also Rossi together with Carlo Aymonino, Paolo Portoghesi and Franco Stella among others. Rossi was undoubtedly the most influential member through his book L’architettura della città (The Architecture of the City, 1966). Through descriptions of Italian cities, he described his concept of architecture. He saw his work as part of an urban structure in constant dialogue with the countless layers of history, a city in continuous change in analogy to its buildings, and adapting to new social, economic, and cultural conditions.[4] His design language is generally understandable, using simple geometries and academic elements borrowed from the past. His layouts reintroduced imagination and poetry into the presentation of architectural work: colorful collage, wooden models, the mixed scales of shapes that can be both design objects and real houses.
There were just a few performances in the floating Teatro del Mondo that Rossi built for the Venice Biennale in 1979. After the short display in the lagoon and the voyage across the Adriatic to the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, the temporary theatre was disassembled. Nevertheless, this scenography-like building shaped the Italian architecture of the second half of the 20th century like no other project. The relocation to Dubrovnik, the famous medieval Republic and archrival of Venice in the Adriatic, inspired discussion about eclectic cultural influence and the complex historical layers of Adriatic cities. Those years coincided with the beginning of the Postmodern movement in former Yugoslavia. It probably was not Rossi’s primary focus of attention, but this Trojan Horse disguised as a theater that was shipped to Dubrovnik, was the first step in a politically delicate debate and movement towards a revision of Modernism in Yugoslavia - no easy feat in the ideologically colored cultural character of a country unconditionally committed to Modernism. Theater as a revolutionary tool in urban planning?Notabene: in 1956 the city of Dubrovnik even hosted CIAM X, the congress. which saw the start of the Team 10.
Peter Brook, who directed Hamlet in Dubrovnik, said that "a theatre should be like a violin, its tone coming from its period and age".[5] His daughter Irina took her Midsummer Night's Dream to the Old City of Dubrovnik’s Marin Držić Theatre, one of the oldest institution of its kind in Croatia.

The Dubrovnik Shakespeare Festival was founded in 2009 by American-Croatian author Michael Lederer. Suddenly, Dubrovnik and its architecture are increasingly associated with the stage on which everyone plays a distinct role in his or her daily live. On an urban scale, the morphology of the Old Town itself reminds us of a stage, surrounded by the natural slopes of the adjacent hills, with the eternal blue of the Adriatic in the back. The topography places the architecture in the foreground and the architecture has taken over the nature so dramatically that the two have become indivisibly connected.
Finally, Rossi´s vision worked out: cultural and geographic lines connected the Adriatic cities together over the last decades. The voyage of the Teatro del Mondo can coincidentally be seen as a rediscovery of the medieval stage setting of Dubrovnik, which serves as shooting location for renowned TV-series and a dream destination for thousand of tourists. Rossi must have had the words of Japanese playwright Yukio Mishima in his mind when he said that life is nothing but a theater. [6]

The Legendary Lost Muses
Every magical girl’s relic has an ultimate summon. An entity that’s heads and shoulders above all other summons. The Heterodynes and the Trilobite Relic have always had Der Kestle, their terrifying castle summon. Gil and the Flying Baron Relic have the airship city, Castle Wulfenbach. The Wasp Queen Relic has the engimatic and apocalyptic Other, and the Great Tower Relic has the great city of Paris.
Now, it is a common fact that summons can be traded or stolen. Switched from one book to the other, willing or otherwise. There are many ways it can be done, depending on the nature and power of the summon in question. Sometimes it can simpy be a matter of the summon in question deciding it likes a different magic girl better. Such as the case with the Waspeater Weasels making an initially unnoticed migration from Gil’s to Tarvek’s book. Much to the amusement of Gil. Or it could be the case of Korsp, the mercenary cat summon who originally belonged to the Beastmaster Relic, but decided to go independent for undisclosed reasons.
The Book of the Flying Baron Relic is infamous for containing summons that originated in other books, and Gil has found entire sections that appear to have been spliced in. On the other side you have the Trilobite Book, which holds nearly all its original spells and summons, and is famous for the deep loyalty of its Jager summons. The Storm Queen relic on the other hand, has been ravaged over the centuries as people have fought over its power and the prestige it represents. Its summons and spells have been picked away piecemeal, and even its ultimate summon, The Legendary Muses, has been seperated into its component summons and scattered. When Anevka, and later Tarvek, first get the relic there is only one muse left, Tinka.
That, among all the indignities that have been visited on the Storm Queen Relic, bothers Tarvek the most. For all his conflicting loyalties and personal pressures, it is the restoration of the Muses that is closest to Tarvek’s heart. Of course being lost, he has no idea where to even begin searching. That changes when a hunt for a mechanical chest summon takes them to Mr. Paynes Carnival and Circus Museum. There they discover that the dusty replica in the corner is not a replica. When all is said and done, Tarvek has a new summon in is book, and the hope that maybe, he can actually do this.
The third muse they find, was one they had had all along. Agatha had summoned the Lady Von Pinn before, but the more they explore the mystery of the first Storm King and his supposed arch-nemisis, the more a suspicion starts to grow in her mind. Its not until the hoard of Fun-Sized Mobile Agony and Death Despensers hidden under the local amusment park wake up, that things start to crystalize, and she makes a gamble.
It is a commonly known fact that the first time a magic girl summons a new summon, that that summon is empowered by the new contract. This first summoning is often used as a trump card, as summons empowered this way can often fight well above their metaphysical weight class. So she send Von Pinn over to Tarvek and yells at him to summon her.
Otilia appears, restored and returned to her proper place among her sisters, as radiant as she was in the days before the Storm Queen Relic was plundered of its summons, and empowered with the strength of a first summoning. With her help its not long before Agatha is summoning Der Kestle and rounding up all the Agony and Death Despensers back into its depths.
Of course, the mystery as to how such a summon ended up in Agatha’s book in the first place, is not answered so easily.

Colombia 2019: Main Places & Caribbean Coast
From: 03/11/1019
To: 29/11/2019
Gone are the days when Colombia was considered as one of the most dangerous countries where people usually avoided going. We have news for all the travel-lovers that now Colombia’s time has surely changed. Now it has become the “a-must-to-go” place for the tourists. Situated on the northern side of South America, it also has some territories and lands in North America. It is a favorite spot for tourists to spend their time along its coast.
With its interesting cities, green jungles and picturesque beaches, this country has it all. It is so diverse in every aspect, that it is known as the country of several nations. More and more tourists are now backpacking to their journey of exploring Colombia. We have made a list of all the places for the people who want to travel and sightseeing Colombia. If some of you guys are choosing a destination to travel, need not to worry. We have got you covered.
  Bogota
It is known as The Athens of South America. The capital city of Colombia is so vast and a busy city that people get in the awe of this place. It had once a bad reputation but now it has made itself the most visited places in Colombia. From La Candelaria to the Gold Museum, this city is also offering you to visit a strange salt cathedral of Zipaquira. It also offers you great street art, if you just scroll around the roads of this city. Nevertheless, you will be able to eat tremendously well in this city. Considered one of the most successful restaurants in Colombian history, Andres Carne de Res was a great experience that you should try.
  Barranquilla
This city is rich with the Caribean culture and the people here are considered as the most beautiful ones. Late night parties and salsa dancing are included in its night-life, as it has lots of beach clubs and bars. Carnival celebrations here are must to attend because it is the most famous in Barranquilla. There is a zoo which has 500 kinds of animals from all over the world. Also, the beaches here are full of locals and tourists all around the year.
  Santa Marta
This city is the oldest in America, which was founded in 1525 by Spanish. The architecture and cathedrals are something that cannot be missed. The best thing about this city is that it is situated near Tayrona National Park which is full of wildlife and some spots where people do camping. There is a public market which is known as the authentic Colombian market. Oh, and you just cannot miss the Historic City Centre, if you love to know about the history of this place.
  Taganga
This is a small fishing village which is only 0 minutes away from Santa Marta. Doesn’t it sound exciting? Well, it should, because it has a picturesque view and tons of things to do here. You can learn Scuba diving there, that too at a very reasonable price. Of course, you can go fishing when you are in a fishing village. You just have to ask local fishermen there or book a tour with the travel agency. You cannot miss the opportunity of watching sunsets over the water. A truly mesmerizing view to watch.
  Palomino
This beachside town is getting very popular amongst the tourists and is now a mandatory stop on the trail. You can go tubing in the Palomino river which is the popular activity there. The Palomino beach is the gorgeous one to spend some time sunbathing there. But don’t forget to have some massage service from the hotels on the beach.
  Minca
This is also a small village in the mountains that relaxes you in its lush green environment. There are two waterfalls of Pozo Azul and Marinka in which you can go for a dip and get yourself refreshed. There is also a gorgeous viewpoint which can be reached through three-hour long hiking. But if you are not a fan of hiking, Mototaxis are also available for such people. There is a Coffee and Cacao Farm that has the best quality of cacao in Colombia. If you are fond of birds, you can go with the expert David for the birding tour.
  Cartagena
It is the most visited spot because of having many direct flights and ship visits. This place was found in 1533 which is famous for the colonial old town, pretty decorated balconies of the houses, cobbled alleys, and vast churches. It is full of crowds everywhere because of having a relaxing atmosphere. A place where you can go slow and just enjoy being in the present. Cheese-filled arepas and fresh lemonade is something you get from every food vendor there. There is a mud volcano in Cartagena where you can float and have a small massage service there.
  Medellín
Medellín is the capital of the Antioquia region, where it is possible to see this unique culture, with different habits ranging from the behavior of its inhabitants to cuisine. Once in the city, be sure to try the “Bandeja Paisa“, the typical dish of the region. Nevertheless, it is a great idea to do the “BEST STREET FOOD TOUR MEDELLÍN” experience. In addition to all this historical wealth related to the city, Medellín also presents the best Colombian night. With wonderful restaurants, bars, and night clubs. Regarding that, a good experience to do is the “Live the Nightlife Rooftop Pub Crawl” option. It was stupendous. The city wins in spite of its neighbors when the analyzed items are style, quality, and variety. We recommend doing both “History Graffiti art and the Comuna13” and “Caminata Histórica por el Centro” experiences.
  Cali
You won’t believe but it is the third-largest city of Colombia which has a bad reputation for many crimes there. Despite all that, it is a fun and lively city where you’ll remain safe if you exactly know where to go. Here, Salsa dancing is mandatory so go and learn that dance. You can even watch a salsa circus there which is named Delirio. There is also a cat park there, where you can see many cat statues in the park painted by the local artists.
  Armenia
This place is like having a slow and relaxing time there if you are too tired from traveling to other places in Colombia. There are so many coffee shops at every nook and corner of the place. The famous Gold Museum is located here in Armenia. The entry to this museum is totally free. Eat at La Fogata which is a very old place serving food to its citizens. There is a beautiful botanical garden by the name of Parque de la Vida where you can just stroll and enjoy your time.
  Montenegro
Do you know what is it famous for? For other outdoor activities. This little town is filled with natural aura where you can have some rejuvenating time. There is a bamboo paradise where you can freshen up your love for nature. There is also some thrill and adventure for tourists. Globos Colombia is the name where you can have a hot-air balloon ride and marvel at all the breath-taking landscapes. This place also offers a recreational water activity of rafting on the boats. Sounds exciting!
  Quimbaya
It is such a small place in Colombia that can be explored within a day. There aren’t many accommodation places so tourists make a little stop here just for resting and munching on small snacks. There is a Panaca Park for little kids for interaction with the animals. If you want some more nature, go to the “Birdwatching in Quindío-Colombia Hotspot” experience for a bird watching and coffee farm.
  Filandia
It is one of the most traditional Colombian coffee towns. The roof of the houses here is all tiled and colored in oranges, greens, and blues. It looks stunning. There are so many coffee farms that have road track for cycling! Yes! All the cycling lovers can spend some time here with a bicycle. If you want to have a perfect view of nature, just head to La Colina Iluminada. You can have the tastiest food at Helena Adentro with so many creative dishes. There is also a secret double waterfall that is located inside a private land.
  Salento
This is also a small town in the area of Coffee Triangle. Tourists go there for chilled vibes and experience the local culture. You can go hiking in Cocora Valley. The track is so gorgeous that you’ll have a wonderful time while hiking. Just take lots of water with you and some snacks. You can find fresh Trout in every restaurant in Salento. You can also take a tour of Coffee plantation of the famous Don Elias produces coffee by hand and is sold to all the visitors. The stunning eco-farm, La Serrana, is a wonderful retreat and is affordable by everyone.

  Stay Safe In Colombia
It is pretty much safe here but still needs a bit of caution while visiting Colombia. There isn’t any kidnapping activity here but petty crimes are done here in this place, especially at night. Don’t show off your valuable items like a camera or mobile phone. Don’t stroll around the unknown places at night. Stay away from drugs. Because you will get yourself in a critical situation in Colombia. Also, get yourself all the duplicate copies of your personal documents. Don’t trust anyone that seems shady to you, even if it’s a taxi driver. Always buy good travel insurance. It will protect you from theft, injury or other mishappenings. One last thing. Never do something that you do not do at your home!

Ok idk if I'm doing this right, I'm on mobile. what about England for the hc ask?
You’re doing it right!
England:
What they smell like: Shitty cologne
How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc): Sprawled out on his back. He’s the person who tries to go to bed early, like 9PM… but this bitch got insomnia he ends up reading or scrolling through Facebook until way later.
What music they enjoy: Mostly punk rock. But some classical music appeals to him, too.
How much time they spend getting ready every morning: He spends like 10 minutes trying to comb down his bedhead, before inevitably giving up and getting dressed.
Their favorite thing to collect: Pictures. He keeps photo albums of everything.
Left or right-handed: I’m pretty sure he’s canonically right-handed, but fuck canon. Left-handed.
Religion (if any): Very loosely Christian. Like, he’s probably gotten the sacraments but isn’t really active in the church or anything.
Favorite sport: Soccer (or as he would call it, ‘football’)
Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc):
Favorite kind of weather: Heavy rain. Thunder and lightning don’t bother him.
A weird/obscure fear they have: Mortality.
The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail: The thing where you have to shoot water at the little target. He gets creepily competitive at it and will trash-talk whoever he’s fighting.

Flea Markets in Singapore for the bargain hunters!
Look beyond the crowded and gleaming malls of Orchard Road, your laptop and mobiles stacked with shopping apps in this digital world and head to the areas of Singapore for a real-time experience – you will find the real deals, vintage clothing, one of a kind art pieces and severable collectables at a great bargain.
Flea markets in Singapore pop up periodically and offer exclusive displays and even limited-edition vintage items that can be great souvenirs.
When you are done with the major expenses of the month like paying the house rent in Singapore and groceries, it’s time to pamper yourself with shopping-therapy at the best flea markets of Singapore. Here are our picks:
Art Market by The Local People
If you love designer outfits and want to explore the creations of local artists, this is the place to be. The art market is set up in car parks and museums at various locations. The local designers and artists display their creations and you’ll also find accessories, homeware and food stalls nearby. Sometimes, live music and performances can also be witnessed along with a DJ to add to the party vibe.
Flea where
Fleawhere is a regular themed fair that is conducted two to three times every month. The items available here cannot be found in any other store or mall and the collection is mostly exclusive and worth the bargain.
In MOX Parade, you’ll find creative displays by local artists and fashion designers, while Flea Party is a hub for vintage fashion and items. If you love handmade items, we recommend you check out Maker’s Parade where local artisans customize items like a quirky neckpiece or a pair of earrings using unusual materials like yarn, pearls, stones and so on.
China Square Central Weekend Flea Market
If you are Marvel, DC or Studio Ghibli fan, prepare to be floored. Every Sunday, you can head to China Square Central Weekend Flea Market to find an amazing collection of comic books, vintage toys, collectables from your favourite Marvel or DC, or out of production Bandai figurine.
There are more than 60 vendors putting their exclusive items on display. So, your patience will certainly be paid off.
Zouk Flea & Easy
Zouk is a popular club at night, but during the day for four times a year, it transforms into a Flea & Easy market. The flea market attracts thousands of people from different part of the country and even the world who come here to buy iconic fashion pieces.
You’ll find snapbacks, accessories, sneakers from popular brands like Nike and Supreme. All the items are limited edition and thus gets snapped up fast. We recommend you visit the place early to get the best deal.
Public Garden Consumer Trade Show

Jacques Snicket prided himself on being a focussed, rule-abiding driver regardless of the situation he found himself in. But on the short drive from the townhouse to the City Station he managed to miss two red lights, drive across a pedestrian crossing without stopping and make three turns without signaling
All in all he considered himself lucky to have arrived at the City Station in one piece. He couldn’t remember ever being so distracted, but the image of Olivia’s luminous white skin kept flashing through his mind, making it impossible to concentrate on anything but his desire to drive back to the house, pluck Sunny out of her arms and declare his undying love for her.
And the morning had started out so well. Having woken up early he had decided to treat the children to chocolate chip pancakes and the surprised look on their faces had been more than worth the trouble. It was the little things that made his new life so incredibly satisfying and seeing the children enjoy a leisured breakfast, joking and laughing with each other, while the morning sun filtered through the windows was definitely one of them.
Then Olivia had wandered in, a long cardigan over yellow pajamas adorned with little books, her chestnut hair still braided and his heart had skipped a beat. Usually she looked so well put together and as much as he enjoyed the dressy blouses, pencil skirts and high heels, there was something incredibly domestic about seeing her in her sleeping attire, lured downstairs by the smell of the pancakes.
When she reached for the teapot, pouring herself a steaming mug of tea that he’d prepared earlier, enjoying the strong taste of it as much as he did, everything had simply be perfect in his world.
After breakfast he’d been cleaning the kitchen when he’d heard Sunny’s shriek.
Without hesitating he had raced upstairs, ready to tackle down whoever was trying to scare his little girl and when he’d stormed into the room, Olivia was already there, clutching Sunny tightly against her, looking equally ready to defend the toddler.
The fearsome intruder turned out to be nothing more vicious than a rather oversized bee and it had been the work of a minute to get rid of the bug.
Olivia had said something to him then, but it hadn’t registered, because he’d finally noticed what exactly she’d been wearing. And immediately his brain had short-circuited, all of the blood in his body locating southwards with such a speed that it left him feeling dizzy.
The ferocity of his reaction shocked even himself. After all, it wasn’t as if he was completely wet behind the ears. In his years as an V.F.D. spy he’d come across women who’d been in a farther state of undress than Olivia had been at that moment, but never in his life had he been so affected by a modest bathing suit.
She was utter perfection, with her tantalizing curves and endless amounts of soft, brilliantly pale skin that begged the be touched. And when she had blushed he had nearly swallowed his tongue, aching with the urge to kiss every inch of that prettily flushed skin.
He knew he must have looked like a prize idiot, gaping at her, completely enthralled, unable to move or speak, even if his life had depended on it, but he had been utterly unable to snap out of it.
Then Violet and Klaus had come in and the situation had become ten times more awkward. He still hadn’t been able to string a single coherent sentence together and the children, observant as always, had picked up on the bizarre atmosphere in the room.
Parking the cab in front of the City Station he leaned back in his seat and slammed the steering wheel with both his hands in vexation with himself. After all of his effort, after weeks of keeping himself in check and bottling up his feelings for her, one green bathing suit with dark blue polkadots had undone all of it.
He had ruined all the progress he’d made in the past couple of weeks. After a strained start he and Olivia had fallen into a comfortable pattern. It still amazed him how seamlessly they worked together where the children where concerned, Olivia’s nurturing personality making it so much easier for him to show his devotion to the children. In their house, surrounded by his family, he didn’t need to pretend and keep up a tough front all the time. That part of him that just wanted to devote his time and energy to his family, making sure they were happy and had everything they needed had been doormat for so long, but since Olivia and the children had come into his life, it had finally emerged, making him feel truly happy and fulfilled for the first time in his life.
When he’d first made the decision to keep Olivia at arm’s length he had been worried about the irrevocable damage this could do to their relationship. His flirtatious  behavior and the kiss they had shared before she’s set off for the Caligari Carnival must have let her believe that there could be a future for them. And even knowing that he was acting in the best interest of her and the children, it had still pained him to hurt her.
But as the weeks had wore on and she’d been able to interact with him calmly, even regaining some of the friendship they’d shared before he’d realized he’d been worried for nothing.
Olivia Caliban might have been attracted to him when they’d first meet, but after his sudden cold treatment of her she’d swiftly moved on like the sensible woman that she was.
It was everything he had hoped for and he should be pleased with this development and content himself with their comfortable, platonic friendship.
And he was content. He truly was.
Taking a deep breath he realized warily though that the carnal impulses induced by  mental image of her clad in nothing but that green bathing suit with the dark blue polkadots were anything but platonic. And so he climbed out of the cab and headed inside the building, towards the gym.
A vigorous, fatiguing workout was just what he needed.
On the last Saturday before school was about to start again, Jacques and Olivia surprised Klaus and Violet with a visit to Duncan and Isadora Quagmire.
They had debated whether or not it would be wise to bring the children together after all of the trauma they had endured, but in the end they had decided to simply suggest their idea to the children and let their reactions guide them.
The look of utter excitement and happiness had quickly erased all of their apprehension and early that morning Jacques drove them all into the city for a meet-up.
After their escape from the village of Fowl Devotees the Quagmires spend several weeks in the self-sustaining hot air mobile home before Hector had managed to safely deliver them to the V.F.D. headquarters in the Mortmain Mountains.
Now that their parents too had perished, the two siblings had been adopted by their aunt, a sister of their father. Veronica Quagmire had been a teacher for over thirty years and was more than happy to take in the Quagmire children.
Jacques was relieved to know that the Quagmire children too were finally safe. Quigley still hadn’t been discovered yet, which was the one matter that still troubled him excessively. Until the Quagmire triplets were reunited, Jacques know he would be able to rest and despite the fact that he was still on authorized leave, he was already discreetly making inquiries after possible leads as to the boys whereabouts.
But that was a worry for another day, today they would focus on bringing the children together.
They started at a small, cosy bakery, the children filling each other in on everything that had happened in their lives since their last encounter while getting their fill of an assortment of cakes and pastries and it was wonderful to see them relaxed and happy. The Quagmires, as it turned out had settled well into living with their aunt, even though they were still shaken by the death of their parents. Both of them loved seeing Olivia again and judging from her brilliant smile and teary eyes the feeling was entirely mutual.
They spend the day meandering through the city and ended up visiting the Museum of Espionage where they gaped at the various displays of ingenious artifacts of observation and assassination. There were recorders in lighters, cameras in brassieres, decks of cards with hidden maps to every location imaginable and a collection of potions that made the hairs Jacques neck stand up. The children were delighted and he was amused to see Violet scribbling fervently into her notebook.
He had a sneaky suspicion a new set of inventions would soon see the light of day. There was no denying that Violet was incredibly talented and Jacquelyn had already expressed a desire in recruiting her as a new volunteer. After discussing the matter with Olivia, they had both decided it would be better to hold off for just a little while.
Violet was a born for the V.F.D., there was no doubt about that and Jacques knew in his bones that she was destined for great things, but for now he very much wanted her to have a few peaceful years, surrounded by her family.
Smiling to himself he watched Klaus read every single description on every single display, absorbing the knowledge like a sponge.
Klaus too would one day become an tremendous asset to the V.F.D. but his pursuits were very different from Violet’s. Not every volunteer was recruited at a young age and Klaus first had many years of school, university and post-grad programs to look forward to.
Their children had a future again and Jacques could accomplish just that in his life, it would be enough.
When dinnertime rolled around they talked about where to eat.
“Na sal!” Sunny proclaimed firmly.
“She means no Café Salmonella,” Klaus translated and Olivia shuddered.
“I wholeheartedly agree,” she said emphatically and Jacques snickered.
“How about The Veritable French Diner instead?” he suggested.
Twenty minutes later they were all seven of them were seated around a large family table and Jacques ordered the drinks.
“Does Larry work here as well?” Olivia asked, taking a sip of her ginger ale.
“He does occasionally,” Jacques replied, “but then again he waiters wherever intervening waiting needs to be done.”
At his words Violet’s eyes widened and she shared a look with Isadora before the two girls burst into giggles.
Jacques raised an eyebrow at them. “Something funny, girls?”
“I just remember something Duncan and Isadora told us earlier,” Violet answered and at her words, Klaus and Sunny started to grin as well, clearly in on the joke. “About something you did.”
Catching Olivia’s eyes he realized she was just as dumbfounded as he was. But judging from the children’s mirth it couldn’t be too bad. “Well, that could be quite a number of things, so color me curious.”
Violet eventually took pity on him. “It’s something Larry told Duncan and Isadora when they were staying at the V.F.D. headquarters,” she explained. “Apparently Jacques called Carmelita Spats a ‘cake sniffer’ while he was rescuing Larry.”
As if on cue the children burst into laughter again, Sunny squealing delightedly.
Despite himself, Jacques grinned before gravely replying. “I might have done just that. I found her to be an extremely unpleasant girl. And besides… she started it.”
“Really, Jacques Snicket,” Olivia admonished him. “You got into a squabble with a little girl?”
She gave him an arched look, her eyes sparkling and for a second it was as if they were back in the cab, bantering and flirting back and forward as they chased the Quagmire children and his heart squeezed tightly with regret.
Oh, to hell with it. For once he could pay her back in kind and pretend that there was nothing stopping him from trying to win her over.
“I did nothing of the sort,” he answered stately. “I merely told her that I did not care for her mistreating my friend. And then I called her  cake sniffer.”
The children cracked up again and it took some effort to keep his face straight. “It did shut her up however.”
Olivia inclined her head towards him, her face solemn. “That is no small feat, I concede.”
Then the corner of her mouth tugged, dimples appearing in both of her cheeks. “I would have loved to see her get taken down a notch.”
The children hummed heartily in agreement to that statement and then their food was served. As they all tucked in, Olivia remarked quietly: “I never realized you came to Prufrock Prep while I was there.”
Up until she said it, he hadn’t either but it didn’t take long before his mind supplied him with various different scenarios.
He would have met her at Prufrock and fallen as instantly for her as he’d done when he had almost hit her with the cab. He would have taken her, the Baudelaires and the Quagmires away from that dreary, dreadful place and none of the horrendous events of the past four months would have happened.
But it wouldn’t do to dwell on it.
Their story could have gone that way, except that it hadn’t.
On September the first school started and with that a whole new routine was put in motion.
Violet and Klaus especially were thrilled to be back in school, the latter throwing himself into his schoolwork with a zeal that slightly frightened Jacques.
After the first week he discreetly contacted the school’s counsellor, inquiring if the children were dealing with any consequences from their year of absence, but he was assured that both of them were settling in well and that their teachers were very pleased with both their behavior and performance. It was more or less exactly what he had been expecting, but it still took a weight of his shoulders to see them thriving.
On the morning that Olivia had started at her new job at Luminosity he’d seen a side of her he hadn’t previously encountered. Around the children she always seemed so sure of herself, so completely in control, but that morning she’d been a mess of nervous excitement and sick-to-her-stomach anxiety.  It baffled him that anyone as competent and clever as her could ever doubt her own capability and it had taken everything in him not to wrap her up in his arms and tell her that she was brilliant and beautiful and that she would excel at her new post.
By the time she got home that evening her apprehension had given way to utter delight at her new position, her euphoria not diminishing in the slightest in the weeks that followed and it made him realize just how under appreciated she had been at Prufrock. Olivia whole-heartedly loved her new job and the extensive research on V.F.D. matters she had done over the summer with Klaus definitely paid off as she began to implement a new filing system that combined resources that had never been connected before, greatly benefiting volunteers who were working in the field.
He himself hadn’t been cleared for active duty yet, much to his own chagrin, but he had been allowed to return to desk work and he now spend his working hours at the V.F.D. City Station, pouring over every file that mentioned the Quagmires in the hope of finding a trace of Quigley. Another perk of visiting the City Station regularly was the fact that he could use their gym facility. He discovered that in order to let his sanity and self control prevail it helped to workout regularly and he did so with gusto.
Klaus and Violet signed up for after school activities. Violet was elated to discover that there was quite an active inventors club at the school and immediately signed up. Meanwhile, Klaus joined the vocabulary olympiad team and started preparing for a tournament in November.
All in all his family was happy and at peace.
Then it became September the 30th, the one year anniversary of the fire that had destroyed the Baudelaire home and taken the lives of Bertrand and Beatrice.
For days in advance the date hung like Damocles’ sword above their heads and if small mercies were anything to be thankful for, Jacques was grateful for the fact that the 30th fell on a Sunday so that the children at least wouldn’t have to worry about school work.
That morning they visited the cemetery where Bertrand and Beatrice were buried next to each other. It was a miserable, grey, rainy day and as they walked the gravel path, the Baudelaire children close together and him and Olivia each on one side, holding umbrellas over them. Their faces were clouded with sadness and white as sheets and Jacques heart twisted painfully from just looking at them.
Upon arriving at the graves he was startled to find that a small bouquet of red roses had already been placed at the foot of Beatrice’s tombstone.
The children smiled slightly at this display of affection for their parents, pleased that someone else but themselves was remembering them.
“They had a lot of friends,” Violet commented softly. “There was this whole world of people that they knew that we had no idea about.”
“I do wonder about the roses though,” Klaus said plaintively, his analytical mind piquing up even at a moment as this. “Roses are rather traditional as mourning flowers, but the color red isn’t… it’s an indicator of passion…”
At his words the budding suspicion that had been growing inside of him solidified and Jacques could feel his heart rate pick up.
Red roses on Beatrice’s grave… that could only mean that Lemony must be close by.
Taking a deep breath he tried to get his emotions under control. Right now the children needed his support, it wouldn’t do to upset them.
The three of them knelt down at the conjuncted graves and Klaus carefully put down the bouquet of white lilies they had brought.
“Good bye father and mother,” Violet said quietly, her voice barely above a tearful whisper. “We miss you so much.”
Without making a single noise Sunny buried her face into her sisters neck and patted her hair with her tiny, stubby fingers.
“We do,” added Klaus. “So very much. But you should also know… we are going to be all right. We will be now, because we have a home again…”
Jacques risked a glance at Olivia, only to see that there were tears streaming down her face and it wasn’t until he felt wetness against his own lips that he realized he was crying too. At long last the children rose, and as if by a magnetic pull, they both gravitated towards their guardians. Jacques wrapped his arm around Violet and Sunny while Olivia pulled Klaus into an embrace.
Eventually they slowly walked back to the cab and once inside they took a moment to collect themselves.
Turning to look over the front seat of the cab, he inspected the tearful faces of the children while Olivia doled out tissues and soft caresses against cheeks.
“Alright?” he inquired gently.
“Yes… yeah…” Violet nodded. “I’m glad we went… It was good to say goodbye properly… we never really did that.”
“It was,” Klaus agreed. “But now… we just really want to go home if that’s all right.”
Almost too choked up to speak, Jacques nodded and fastened his seatbelt “Of course that’s all right… let’s go home.”
On beforehand he and Olivia had talked with the children about how they would like to spend the day and what each of them needed to get through it. The three siblings had indicated that they would like to remain as close as possible during the day and almost instinctively they holed themselves up in the library, the one single place where they had always managed to find comfort in the past year.
For a moment he had wondered if the children wouldn’t rather prefer to be alone and he shared a worried look with Olivia.
But they hadn’t as much as taken one step towards the door when the children stiffened. “Aren’t you going to stay?” Violet asked in a quiet voice.
“Of course we are,” Olivia reassured her instantly. “We aren’t going anywhere.”
They spend a quiet, gloomy day inside, each of the children barely talking, feeling clearly that every word, no matter how well-meant, would fall like a stone in the fragility of their grief.
Jacques only left the room to fetch tea and light snacks for the children and as the afternoon turned into evening the children slowly started to relax a little, the heavy oppressiveness of sadness and mourning lifting somewhat, although it wasn’t until after dinner that they started to talk again.
“I have been dreading this day so much,” Violet confessed that evening, as she sat curled up on the couch, tucked underneath a blanket, Sunny dozing in her arms.
“Me too,” Klaus complemented. “There something so final about it. It’s been a year now… All of this year I’ve been thinking… ‘but last year father and mother were still here and they did this or that…’
Now I can’t do that anymore.”
“I know,” Violet said quietly. “I feel that too, but on the other hand… I’m also hoping it will be easier from now on. There will be no more firsts… No more first birthdays without them, no more first Christmas… we’ve all made it past that.”
“I hope it will get easier, but sometimes I doubt that it ever will,” Klaus said, his voice hoarse as if every word cost him to be spoken. “Sometimes in the morning, just after I have woken up… I haven’t yet remembered that they’re gone and for a moment everything feels like it used to be before… and then I do remember…”
And Jacques himself remembered only too well. For the first few years after his own parents had died, how often had he woken up feeling the exact same way? But before he could say anything, Olivia’s tearful voice beat him to it.
“I know, honey… and it might take a while for that to go away, but it will eventually, I promise.”
Klaus smiled sadly. “It’s not as bad as it used to be… not since we started living here anyway… but I still feel terrible when it does.”
“But when the dawn of morning comes he wakes to find once more
That what he thought were sun-kissed hills are rags upon the floor,”
Olivia quoted quietly.
Despite his grief, Klaus’ face lit up briefly in the way a literate mind does when it finds himself being understood by works of fiction. “That’s it… that’s exactly how I feel.. who wrote that?”
“It’s from a poem by Edgar Albert Guest,” Olivia replied. “I’ve always found it to be very comforting.”
For a long moment they were all quiet before Violet spoke again, her voice hesitant. “Olivia… do you still have your parents?”
Jacques watched his wife intently, seeing her startle at the unexpected question, his heart racing. He had wondered about it so often, but he had never quite dared to breech the subject himself.
Olivia took a shuddering breath, before she clenched her hands together in her lap. “I’m an orphan too… my parents passed away when I was five years old.”
There was a world of sadness in her voice, but when she looked at the children there was a look of recognition. Tilting her head she looked inquisitively before asking. “But you knew that already, didn’t you?”
“We suspected it,” Violet answered. “It was something you said to us when we just got to Prufrock.”
“You said: ‘It’s awful, isn’t it, to have people missing from your life. It’s like a question that haunts you day and night and you’ll never know if that question will ever be answered,’” Klaus added.
Jacques shook his head with a smile, marveling at the boy’s memory.
Across from him Olivia was smiling as well, although more tearfully.
“Also,” Violet continued, “when Count Olaf made all the orphans stand up during the pep rally, you stood up as well. We’ve wondered ever since.”
“You children are far too clever,” Olivia answered, her voice rich with affection. “Very well, my parents died from carbon monoxide poisoning. During the investigation later they found a leak in the kitchen… which is where they perished… My father was meticulous about keeping windows closed, he hated draughts.”
“What happened to you after that?” Violet asked, leaning closer.
“First my aunt took me in,” Olivia told. “But she was planning a journey around the world and she couldn’t very well take me with her… she said I would only be weighing her down… so after that another couple took me in. They weren’t related to me… but they thought they wanted a child so they became my guardians. Then it turned out that I wasn’t compatible with their dog, so they send me away again…”
“That’s horrible!” Violet and Klaus exclaimed in unison, disgust written across their faces. Their cry woke Sunny who added a sleepy “Da-bla!” to the conversation.
“My sister means ‘deplorable’,” Klaus translated helpfully.
“Well, I suppose it’s not as bad as some of the guardians that were appointed to you,” Olivia replied with a shrug. “After that I was send to a school. It wasn’t terrible… for all intents an purposes I think it even was a very good school… I learned a lot there… it just wasn’t a home.”
“And you didn’t have any siblings,” Violet supplied, shuddering slightly. “You were all alone.”
For a second Jacques could see a world of hurt and pain on her face, but then she smiled again. “Well, that was then… I’m no longer alone now, am I?”
Barely daring to breath he watched as the Baudelaire children shuffled closer around her, taking her up in a circle.
“You’re not.”
Sitting there, rooted to his spot, the truth hit him with as much painful clarity as a blow with a sledgehammer would have done and he wondered how he had ever missed the signs.
It all made sense now… her determination at saving the Baudelaires and the Quagmires, her surprise at finding herself recruited by the V.F.D, her anxiety at starting a new job and fitting in, the way she glowed whenever she was around the children…
She had been looking for a family as much as the rest of them had.
For months he had had felt faintly guilty about ripping her away from her safe, secure world, even if Prufrock perhaps wasn’t the happiest place to be, but now he understood how short-sighted he had been. He had focussed all of his energy and responsibility on the children, completely ignoring the fact that Olivia needed to be loved as well.
With a pang he remembered his wedding vows, the words he had spoken so earnestly all those weeks ago, despite their unusual circumstances.
That he would love and cherish her until his dying day.
He had done none of those things. Instead of loving her he had kept her at arms length, destroying most of their beautiful friendship in the progress and instead of cherishing her and finding a new way to show her every day what a beautiful and wonderful woman she was and how much he adored her, he had treated her as if she was nothing more than a random associate.
Kit had been right all along.
He was an utter idiot.
