Kei Tsukishima wasn’t the best at showing affection at all. He only liked and respected Yamaguchi, but apart from that, there wasn’t really anyone he thought merited his honest and most sincere loyalty and trust. Sure, he respected Daichi when he was still in high school, but Daichi was his captain. It was different.

Then, you moved to Miyagi and enrolled in Karasuno in mid-April. You were placed in the same class as Yamaguchi and Tsukishima. Apparently, you had scored in the top 1% in your old high school, much to Tsukishima’s chagrin. He assumed you would be just another one of those academic bitches (like himself) who only cared about what directly affected them. 

That was the first time Tsukishima was wrong. 

You were sickeningly sweet, so much so that many people thought it was just an act. Tsukishima first thought this, too, that a wolf was hiding under that fluffy sheep wool. But no, there wasn’t. You were genuinely nice without ulterior motives, always volunteering to tutor students after class. You even helped Yamaguchi with his English vocabulary and grammar. He didn’t even have to ask! That’s how sweet you were, and Tsukishima hated that. Well, only at first. 

He knew he liked you the second you snapped at him, calling him an asshole in front of the entire Karasuno team. He was practicing serves and missed completely, the volleyball slamming into your torso as you walked by the practice gym. Instead of apologizing, he blamed you for being in the way. 

Instead of you apologizing for having dared to be in the way of a rouge volleyball, he was met with a cold smack in the face. Vulgar words left your mouth, your face heating up in anger as you called him out for being a stuck-up prick who didn’t care about anyone but himself (and maybe Yamaguchi.) The Karasuno team stood in shock as you screamed at him, your usual friendly and kind demeanor long forgotten. Hinata thought that Tsukishima was absolutely going to murder you, but instead, the lanky blonde just stood there with the tiniest blush on his cheeks. You called him out; you slapped him. The sweetest girl in Karasuno slapped him and humbled him in front of his teammates. You weren’t just an innocent little lamb, you bit. And Tsukishima liked that. 

Tsukishima never acted on his urges in high school; he was too busy with class and volleyball and Hinata’s bullshit to worry about romantic relationships. But he caught himself sneaking glances at you throughout high school, no matter where he was. You two were always in the same class, weirdly enough. Graduation eventually came, and lo and behold, the two of you went to Sendai. He was on a semi-volleyball scholarship, and you had a full academic ride because you did. And to his horror, or perhaps delight, you both had the same entry-level statistics class.

He first noticed that you had a sense of personal style that he approved of. Tsukishima had only ever seen you in the Karasuno girl’s school uniform before, so it was a pleasant surprise to see you wearing a spaghetti strap tank top with a wool cardigan and loose jeans. It was…cute.

Tsukishima was taken aback when you walked up to him after class, bowing your head slightly to apologize for screaming at him when you were in high school. He smirked and accepted the apology, pushing your head down further. 

“You also slapped me and called me an asshole, remember?”

You became flustered and started apologizing even more, tilting your head with sparkling eyes.

“I know, I’m really sorry. I don’t want any bad blood. How can I make this up to you?”

“Go on a date with me.” It came out of his lips so fast that Tsukishima didn’t have time to cover it up with a cough. How could he let that slip from his lips, he always thought before speaking. He thought before doing anything! He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, looking away in embarrassment. “Go on…just go on a date with me, please. I’ve liked you since high school, moron.”

You smiled and hugged him, squeezing his torso with all your might. Of course, Tsukishima thought this was adorable, he was a foot taller than you. “Of course, I’ll go on a date with you! Where?” You asked as you looked up, the prettiest smile plastered across your shining face. Fuck, Tsukishima was totally screwed. He’d give you the world right then and there if he wasn’t so proud. 

“My dorm? Yamaguchi is out with friends for the weekend.”

“Yamaguchi has friends other than you? Damn, he really grew up.”

“Indeed,”

Tsukishima’s side of the dorm was immaculate. Spotless, organized, and decorated with dinosaur posters. It was cute and nerdy, making you smile. Maybe deep down inside, he wasn’t such a jerk.

Mario wrote his 6th blog post on the Miyagi Reconstruction Portal ^^

He started this series according to his job as a Miyagi Kizuna Ambassador. His task is to promote the local charms across the country.     According to that, this time he’s promoting the "Seaweed Chips". ^^

Ordering the delicious [products] of Miyagi by Kuroba Mario Vol. 6

Everyone who is looking at the Miyagi Reconstruction Portal Site, After a long silence [it’s me], Kuroba Mario!

I’m taking my time with updating.

Well then the delicious order for this time is the “Seaweed Chips” by Fujikuni Bussan!

The seaweed what grows it the ocean by Sanriku and is rich of vitamins and minerals, is processed into a chips.

There are 3 flavours.

The first is “Plum”!

Yeah, its scent is plum too! The flavour is plum! I love plum… Haha I thought it’d be delicious with ochazuke /rice with tea poured on it/! Using the dried plum of Miyagi prefecture, the sourness of the plum and the crispy texture of seaweed gets addictive!

The “Millet Sugar” is sweet. Despite it’s seaweed. The texture is rather like a candy compared to the plum [version]. The sweetness of the millet sugar and the crispy seaweed is a best match! It feels so.

The last is the “Almond”! It’s aromatic. It’s texture is different from the millet sugar [version]. As it contains the almond itself it’s like almond fish!

When I eat it I don’t feel like I’m eating seaweed at all. Although it looks like seaweed.

As expected, it’s seaweed chips. The naming is also the best!

The Fujikuni Bussan what creates the “Seaweed Chips” was established in 1967. They carry on with processing sales on seafood (mainly seaweed) wholesales focused on hot steamed salted wakame seaweed. They have the right to purchase from all fisheries stocking with cooperative selling and have direct transactions with manufacturers by the beach, and they’re determined to purchase carefully selected raw materials from the natives of Sanriku.

I think it’s delicious to eat it as a snack too, so if it’s alright, please try to eat and compare it you all as well!

I want this to become a school lunch at elementary schools. I’d be happy! Haha

We've been blessed with another great year in the fandom, with the last 2 installments of Ruroken are finally released and he's once again proven that no one could ever be a better Kenshin than he was, then he delivered an amazing performance in his 2nd movie as a voice actor in Belle (Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime / The Dragon and The Freckled Princess), he delivered yet another amazing performance in In The Wake (Mamorarenakatta Mono tachi e / To Those Who Were Not Protected), enough to get him a nomination for Best Lead Actor in Japan Academy Awards 2022, to the several books he's released during the same year, Miyagi kara, a book about his (and Kamiki's) trip to Miyagi to commemorate 10 years of Great East Japan Earthquake, Backstage Pass Takeru Satoh, a book containing 10 years of staff report blog entries, and of course, his calendar / radio diary book.

Takeru Satoh Radio Diary, is a concept for his 2022 calendar. As the name suggests, it's a calendar book, with a monthly diary entry, a series of stories written by Takasaki Takuma, and read by Takeru, all in a radio broadcast vibe.

To celebrate his 33rd birthday, I'd like to share some of the entries from the radio diary, from January to March, and also a special voice message from Takeru himself from his birthday entry.

Prologue

The man built a small radio station.

From the rooftop of a building in the city, whenever he felt like it, he will start the broadcast, and talk about things happening on that day, or put someone’s concerns into words.

If he started it earlier, it might have been called something witty like Pirate broadcast.

The words became voices, become sounds, and flew into the city sky.

Maybe no one will hear it, maybe it will reach someone.

When he just put the words together as he goes, someone called it a story.

He can almost create a song from it, but he still feels something is missing.

Somehow the man was pleased with it.

Part 1 - What A Wonderful World

People seem to like the season of their birth.

The fact that wind feels pleasant, and how the lightness of taking off my jacket puts me in a good mood, that might be the reason.

My birthday thoughts, have a listen on the usual radio.

Today is my birthday. I don’t have a specific idea of what kind of year I want this year to be, although they ask me every year.

Every year, I just answered as I go, but most of them were lies.

That reminds me, I haven’t named this radio station. What kind of name do you think is best? But because I’ve been doing this in secret, maybe it’s also a good idea to continue without having a proper name.

The Freedom of Expression, radio version - Ep 44, August 2016 - Announcement of another live special, Pokemon Go, Palm reading/Palmistry.

Kaoru starts by saying that the details of the next 'special live broadcast' have finally been decided. On August 9th at 1am, they will do a two hour broadcast. (Only one this time, unlike in December when they did two). The title of the show will be, 'The Freedom of Expression Special - The best of the first half of 2016. Back stories from the other side of the world'. 'The other side of the world' referring to Dobashi in Brazil. All of the Tokyo Sports team will appear on it, including Kami. He has never missed a days' work but he should be on his summer vacation so it'll be ok. They will talk about some of the best stories of the year so far, and Kaoru invites the listeners to send in any of thier favourite news stories too. He had intended to play some more new jingle entries on today's show, but says he will play them during the live special instead, and finish the campaign there for now. He says he will be much more generous with handing out stickers this time, as he has only handed out about 5 since he first made them.

Next Kaoru mentions that Utafumi has been released at long last, about 3 days ago. Before the release date he was only able to play the promotional edit version, but now that the release date has passed, he is finally able to play the full version, so he goes ahead and plays it.

Next, Tasai joins them for the Tokyo Sports corner. Tasai isn't sure whether they should allow Hiranabe on the upcoming live broadcast. The theme of his fist topic is the game Pokemon Go, which was experiencing a world wide boom at the time. Tasai and Joe ask Kaoru whether he plays Pokemon Go. Kaoru says he does play it, but is not mad about it. He's caught about 100 pokemon so far. Joe does not play, and asks Kaoru what exactly it is that you do in Pokemon Go. Kaoru laughs and replies that he doesn't even know. Tasai then explains the concept of the game to Joe. He then goes on to say that despite its world popularity and massive gain for Nintendo, it has brought with it some problems. For example, there was a case in Miyagi prefecture where two Chinese people trespassed onto private land playing it, and there have been various cases nationwide of pokemon appearing inside nuclear power plants. Joe says misuse of the game cannot be ruled out. For example, it could be used to boost crowds at demos if many people gathered to collect pokemon. If you knew how to use it skillfully you might be able to manipulate peoples' movements. Kaoru realises the political implications of this if you could secretly get a lot of people to gather in a specific place, at a specific time. Tasai also adds that China and Russia are both worried about the app, because they fear the images caught on the app might reveal military secrets if they are shared overseas. He also doesn't like the way salarymen in Japan hold thier phones up at odd angles in the street while playing this game. Its a bit scary. He doesn't want to end up getting caught in thier images. Kaoru mentions a collab bewteen Pokemon Go and First of the North Star, and Tasai says it would be pretty bad if a Kenshiro appeared outside your house and a crowd gathered to catch it. He thinks we need to be careful with this type of thing. Joe suggests the idea of 'Hiranabe Go', but realises that no-one is likely to download it.

Kaoru plays his next record, which is Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time'. He played this record because it reminds him of an anime he used to watch as a kid. The anime Midoriyama kōkō/緑山高校 had this song as the ending theme for its summer vacation broadcasts, which were aired in Kansai every day from Mon-Fri during the school summer vacation. Kaoru loved watching it. Joe has no idea what this is, so Kaoru explains its a baseball themed anime. He admits that he recently introduced it on his blog, so this is actually a bit of self promo for his blog.

Tasai's next topic is about the comedian Shimada Shūhei, who also happens to be a palm reader. At a recent event, Shimada had been asked by reporters about the kinds of palms he's read up to now. He answered that when he read the palm of the comedian Ijiri Okada, who is known for playing an erotic/pervy character (エロキャラ), he discovered that he had no 'erotic line/エロ線'(Girdle of Venus in English). In truth, playing this character is strictly work for Ijiri, he takes it very seriously as business. Apparently, if you have an extra line on the inside of your life line, you have extra strong vitality. Looking at his own hand, Kaoru says he does have an extra line. Joe does not. This is apparently quite a rare feature, and Shimada has only seen two celebrities who have it. One is TV star Kuroyanagi Tetsuko, the other is rakugo performer Utamaru Katsura. Both are pretty old, but still alive during this shows broadcast (Tasai hopes, with nervous laughter). Tasai then makes the others guess one more public person who has extra life lines. Joe guesses Hiranabe. He may have the vitality of a cockroach, but no, its not Hiranabe, says Tasai. After a few clues they get the answer of female wrestler Yoshida Saori. Yoshida actually has three extra life lines, making four in total.

Joe asks Kaoru if he's ever had his palm read. Kaoru says he has. He was told that his fate was to become wealthy. Back when he first moved to Tokyo 20 odd years ago, he went to visit a shrine for New Years prayer with a few people from the offce, including his boss (*Dynamite Tommy?*) and there was a palm reading stall at the shrine. So they decided to give it a go. The palm reader said straight away, 'Ah, you will be wealthy'. Kaoru says he is not wealthy...laughs from the others.

To finish, Kaoru repeats the news that a summer live special will be held on August 9th, he is a little nervous about broadcasting live again. He asks listeners to send in news or jingles for the live broadcast, then plugs his tour, and new single.

The sun filters through the window while you lazily open your eyes. You move your eyes through the room, looking to the boy next to you: he breathes slowly without making any noise, just like an angel.

A lock of hair slips over his eyes and you move it behind his ear, while the memories of the last night make room in your mind. A slight blush appears on your cheeks as you slowly relive the past emotions you felt just the night before with your boyfriend. You still remember the delicacy with which he brushed your skin and the sweet words and prayers whispered in your ear.

You approach slowly and leave a kiss on the tip of his nose, getting up soon after while you try not to wake him up. You grab his previously abandoned shirt from your desk and wear it, enjoying the trail of perfume that’s still on the fabric. Barefoot, you leave your room and quietly walk into the kitchen, determined to prepare breakfast for both. It’s your turn to be the romantic one.

You move through your kitchen while taking the ingredients to cook simple pancakes. Cooking is not something you do well, everyone knows that: most of the times your parents don’t even let you come near the cookers due to all the times you burnt food (water included, you still don’t know how), but you are sure that this time nothing serious will happen. You've practiced so many times with your mother to make pancakes that you’re sure you can do everything perfectly, you mean, what could go wrong?

Your house is in complete silence, the only noises come from your garden. Your parents went away, leaving you at home all alone for a couple of days to visit your grandparents. You would have gladly come with them but unfortunately this is your senior year and you have preparatory classes for college. You plan to leave Miyagi and move to Tokyo next year and your parents know it well, as much as you know how high is the level of preparation required to access: breaks from studying are not that much, but as long as it guarantees you a happy entry into the world of your dreams, you’re ready to come to compromises.

You put the batter in the fridge, just as long as the pan heats up, while you take two oranges and squeeze them to make some juice.

You get distracted for a moment thinking about what will happen to you and Koushi, if you’ll continue to be a couple or if you’ll break up. Maybe you’ll still be friends and after sole years you’ll meet again and-

You hear a thud coming from your room followed by a painful grunt and scared you immediately head towards the noise.

You lean out at the entrance of your room and all you see is a simple volleyball player wrapped in your blankets sitting on the floor, while massaging his sore head. An hearty laugh leaves your lips as you watch your boyfriend get up badly and look at you crookedly.

"There's nothing to laugh about." Suga gives you a sweet pout and you approach him smiling, carrying your arms around his back.

"You're so cute when you pout, you know?" the boy gives you a smile and hugs you back, you feel as you could melt in his arms. How can someone be so handsome in the morning as soon as he wakes up? So unfair.

"First you steal my heart and then my lines too?" he asks you and you giggle a bit.

"So cheesy!" a grin immediately appears on his face and after a few seconds you find yourself lying on the bed while Suga straddles you and begins to tickle you on your hips.

You squirm under his calloused fingers, cursing yourself for revealing your secret weeks ago while heading back home together after his practices. Despite your constant begging, Suga is determined to continue his torture, tickling your hips without giving you a break; he enjoys your laugh while you almost have tears in your eyes. You stretch your arm in an attempt to grab a pillow and pull it in his face, but he's quicker than you and he immediately understands what’s your intention: he takes your wrists and locks them behind your head.

The atmosphere becomes much hotter and your bodies feel it. Sugawara slowly comes closer to your face, almost touching your lips, his breath is blowing on your already red cheeks.

"I've had the best night of my life." He whispers in your ear. He begins leaving kisses all over your neck, stroking his nose to your already hot skin. You look him in the eyes and give him one of your best smiles, one of those that drives him crazy every time.

"I can't complain about mine too." You answer him calmly while you enjoy the sight of your hot boyfriend.

"You're so beautiful, y/n. It's a shame I didn't wake up with you still by my side." And that's exactly when you remember the pan left on the cookers.

A strange smell comes up to your room and bells start ringing in your head, while Suga raises his confused head, feeling a strange smell in the room too.

"Do you feel thi-"

You don’t give him enough time to finish the line, you immediately get up from him by dropping him to the ground once again and then run into the kitchen, turning off the gas. You open the windows, trying to get out the gas that has accumulated in your kitchen, while you wave a towel with one hand and cover your mouth with the other trying not to inhale anything. Suga comes soon after, he helps you open all the windows in the house and the door that gives onto your backyard, dragging you away from all the gas that’s in your kitchen.

"Tell me you didn't really tried to cook y/n." he looks at you with a soft smile on his face.

You know he's not angry and he's probably not going to stop teasing you for the rest of the day, but you can't help but be sad. You're not one to cry easily, but this time you can't hold back the tears and immediately your eyes get watery. You worked so hard to make just simple pancakes and you still ruined everything.

Koushi sees the tears on the sides of your eyes, there’s no need to say anything, he comes to hug you, knowing to well what’s going on.

"Hey, it's okay, it's just a little bit of gas, it happens to everyone. You don't have to act like this." He whispers to you by stroking your head and kissing your forehead, while you wrap your arms around his naked back.

"I know, but I really wanted to surprise you and show you I improved since last time." If only you hadn't been distracted...

"You don't have show me anything, I already know how perfect you are.” He whispers to you, holding you even tighter.

"And how do I make you accept sharing an apartment with me in Tokyo?" you say slowly, raising your head, as you blush once again while Suga looks at you surprised. Well, good job, now you're probably looking like the needy one. You hide your face in your boyfriend's arms once again.

"Actually, I've been thinking about it for a while... I'm glad we had the same idea." You lift your face up and look at him in amazement as he bends over you and kisses your nose tip, making you giggle.

“Even if I burn water?” he gives you another cute laugh, you feel so lucky to have him by your side.

“As long as I’m the one cooking we’ll be safe and none of us will starve. Now, would you rather sit or make breakfast with me?" he asks you softly.

"I'm helping you." You get on your tips to kiss his lips, while Suga takes your hand and drags you into the kitchen once again, this time making sure to not burn anything.

Anniversary Week

As we started to hear about the global pandemic and to worry about how it was going to affect our daily lives, I had the idea to write a blog. Write about what you know I always hear and so my theme was what’s right on my doorstep. The very first entry I wrote, pre-Tumblr was on 20th March 2020 on Google sheets, but I soon decided I need to move to a different platform and so my first Tumblr Blog came about on 27th March 2020, which was a Friday.

Where has the time gone? We’ve missed all the birthdays, big anniversary, Mother’s Day (twice) and Father’s Day, Christmas with family and so on, so the big benefit of a nature blog is that rather than marking time by your own life events, the seasons are going to roll around come what may and that Spring is the period of hope and regeneration. We’re into Spring proper now as today’s the Vernal Equinox.

Ms NW tE is definitely catching the gardening and nature bug and spent yesterday painting some pots. I’ve got my eye on that one in the middle, you can tell it’s my style as per these hiding behind Pedro.

My Mother’s Day Muscari are all flowering now

Finally, this morning I got up to some colour on my green sticks. Hoorah! Crow got up to a patient queue awaiting his breakfast café - all the girls (female Pheasants) were lined up in the shrubbery, anticipating a feast. They may have been having a long wait because I was awake at ten past four today, when Robin was singing. There wasn’t even the slightest sign of light either and I nodded off again.

I also got this Parakeet picture sent from SE London, what a fantastic pose it is too.

The rose-ringed parakeet is sexually dimorphic. The adult male sports a red and black neck ring, and the hen and immature birds of both sexes either show no neck rings, or display shadow-like pale to dark grey neck rings. Both sexes have a distinctive green colour in the wild, and captive bred ringnecks have multiple colour mutations including blue, violet and yellow. Rose-ringed parakeets measure on average 40 cm (16 in) in length, including the tail feathers, a large portion of their total length. Their average single-wing length is about 15 to 17.5 cm (5.9 to 6.9 in). In the wild, this is a noisy species with an unmistakable squawking call.

Yesterday I watched three Rabbits chasing each other around the bottom of the garden.  Last night I heard an Owl for the first time in a while and a few times today the Sparrow Hawk flew in and landed low in the shrubbery. An earthquake struck northern Japan generating a tsunami of one metre on Saturday.

The quake hit the coast of Miyagi Prefecture at 6.26pm (0926 GMT) and had a magnitude of 7.2 at a depth of 60km, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Tremors started just before 6:10 p.m and could be felt in Tokyo, about 400 km south of the epicentre.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake was centred 27 kilometres east of Ishinomaki at a depth of 60 kilometres, which is off the coast of the Miyagi prefecture - an area that was heavily damaged during the huge earthquake and tsunami of 2011.

He started this series according to his job as a Miyagi Kizuna Ambassador. His task is to promote the local charms across the country.     According to that, this time what he’s promoting is the "Abezen Shouten’s Local Cider". ^^

Everyone who is looking at the Miyagi Reconstruction Portal Site, Good day!

It’s spring isn’t it

This time I had the “Abezen Shouten’s Local Cider”.

First I’ll have the “Shiogama Ginger Ale Salty”.

Ginger ale, I usually don’t drink it with a highball only, but…

This is delicious! It’s a salty cider what’s not too sweet or salty.

It’s a fresh cider that has the taste of ginger with the burned seaweed’s salt from Shiogama. The “burned seaweed’s salt” of Shiogama is an eelgrass what’s transported previously to the area, gets boiled down by recipe, using salt from the sea water of Matsushima bay and as the eelgrass is mild salty (it’s not too salty), it serves as a cider what’s easy to drink!

It’s a taste you long for in summer. You may want to drink it after exercising or when you sweat and lose salt! Haha

The next one is the “Shiogama Oden Cider”.

It’s hard to imagine the combination of oden [Japanese winter one pot dish] and cider, haha

The characteristic of Shiogama Oden has oyster extract and oden soup, kelp [kind of a seaweed], and it’s a cider what emphasizes the taste of katsuodashi [kind of fish soup], but yeah, I feel drank, I hear the kelp! The scent is strong, too! Drinking it warm, it’s a coexistence of sweet and salty light oden soup, and it seems delicious when dividing it with liquor to make it a habit! It’s a cider you want to drink in the night, haha

The company Abezen Shouten what creates the cider [I introduced] here, was established in the first year of the Showa era and has been producing fisheries products. It was damaged by the tsunami what was caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, but about one month after the earthquake a part of the factory was back to operation. The employees who experienced the earthquake said “We want to prepare canned goods that can be used as emergency rations”, so they developed products such as the “Shiogama Canned Oden”, and they’re developing various other products, too!

With that said,

I’ve been updating slowly, but actually, this time’s became the last update.

I thought again that there are a lot of delicious things in Miyagi prefecture and I thought I was in the Kingdom of Food!

I was happy to be able to feel my home place through this work.

MultiMedia Journal Entry 2: Film

For my film blog post, I was searching for a film that had people of color at the forefront as a lead character. I was drawn to the movie Karate Kid. Not the more recent one, but the one from 1984. 

This is a movie that follows a troubled young boy, Daniel, who just recently moved across the country because of his mom’s new job. He doesn’t make friends very well because he makes a connection with the main bully’s girlfriend. His maintenance man, Miyagi, takes him under his wing as a protege for self defense martial arts. While Daniel originally doesn’t agree with his practices, he eventually beats his foe by playing fairly and only using marital arts as self defense and not as a way to “fight” in the original way that Daniel intended. 

One thing that we have focused on a lot this semester has been representation; in art, in cartoons, and in documentaries as well. I have now been obsessed with keeping an eye out for POC in movies, as extras or as actual characters. Mr. Miyagi was a POC, but other than him, there were only FOUR other actors who were POC in any of the extras or supporting characters. And only one other one had a line besides Miyagi. Because of the reading we did on the representation of different Asian cultures and the idea of “orientalism,” it was almost hard for me to watch the actor Pat Morita play this part. It was wildly stereotypical when it came to the aspects of the character that made him “Asian.” His accent, his dress, his beard, his broken English...all of it was to a T like the comics and cartoons that we looked at for class. Because he was an Asian American, it wasn’t yellow face, but it was a representation of stereotypes that were often perpetuated by western culture. Obviously, this man was doing what he was directed to do, but I had to mention this in the blog because it’s almost exactly what we were talking about in class. Fukushima a “ticking time bomb” — Fires now “raging” near nuclear plant — Blaze doubles in size; “Smoke rising from wide areas” — Concern over fallout of highly radioactive material; Officials closely watching radiation levels

A wildfire has been raging for more than 2 days near the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant… The area is part of a zone designated as “no-entry” due to high radiation levels… Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures and the Self-Defense Forces are using helicopters to fight the blaze. They are also looking at the possibility of using ground crews. Footage from an NHK helicopter on Monday morning showed smoke rising from wide areas and fires burning in several locations…

Mainichi, May 1, 2017: Wildfire rages in highly radioactive Fukushima mountain forest — A fire broke out in a mountain forest near the crippled Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant on the evening of April 29, consuming an area approximately 20 hectares in size, according to prefectural authorities… As the fire continued to spread, however, helicopters from the GSDF, Fukushima Prefecture and other parties on May 1 resumed fire extinguishing operations from around 5 a.m. … As of May 1, there were no major changes to radiation levels in the heart of Namie and other areas near the fire scene, according to the Ministry of the Environment. “We will continue to closely watch changes in radiation doses in the surrounding areas,” said a ministry official.

Common Dreams, May 1, 2017: Sparking Fears of Airborne Radiation, Wildfire Burns in Fukushima ‘No-Go Zone’; Contaminated forests such as those outside fallout sites like Fukushima and Chernobyl ‘are ticking time bombs’ — A wildfire broke out in the highly radioactive “no-go zone” near the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant over the weekend, reviving concerns over potential airborne radiation… Local officials were forced to call in the Japanese military… In a blog post last year, Anton Beneslavsky, a member of Greenpeace Russia’s firefighting group who has been deployed to fight blazes in nuclear Chernobyl, outlined the specific dangers of wildfires in contaminated areas. “During a fire, radionuclides like caesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium rise into the air and travel with the wind,” Beneslavsky wrote. “This is a health concern because when these unstable atoms are inhaled, people become internally exposed to radiation.” Contaminated forests such as those outside fallout sites like Fukushima and Chernobyl “are ticking time bombs,” scientist and former regional government official Ludmila Komogortseva told Beneslavsky. “Woods and peat accumulate radiation,” she explained “and every moment, every grass burning, every dropped cigarette or camp fire can spark a new disaster.”

Sputnik News, May 1, 2017: Japanese Authorities Fighting Wildfire in Evacuation Zone Near Fukushima NPP… There were no reports either about the wind direction or the changes in the background radiation level in relation to the fire.
