Todays rip: 19/04/2024
i love(d) you
Season 6 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume FF Also on: Now That's What I Call Quality! 3
Ripped by vvsvlogs
youtube
Requested by oetaboy and an anonymous reader! @oetaboy (Ask Box)
I'm sure this rip's been a long time coming for many - I know it has for me. I've had i love(d) you sitting in my drafts as far back as in March, but truthfully it's...daunting, to write about. Requested by two readers. Close to 200 thousand views on YouTube, and recently featured prominently in popular Clone Hero YouTuber Acai's "The Quality of SiIvaGunner" series. And the rip itself being an emotional gutpunch in a season filled with them, from a ripper who's already gutpunched me plenty with Wham! Into Dreams and The Paragoomba and the Wiggler. vvsvlogs, Vivi, I ask this with the most sincere gratitude possible - why must you do this to me?
Minecraft as a game has its emotional hooks in at least two generations of people - that much I think we're all aware of. A sandbox filled with endless possibilities, community, friends, individual stories of survival or of great creative endeavors, all wrapped in C418's hauntingly beautiful score, one I've discussed many times before with Fell From a High Place (Reprise), M-O-O-G City and Every Mob Wants To Rule My World. All of these rips are beautiful, yet they're all aiming to play with Minecraft's sound in some way - the former two rips are arrangement of its music with other games' instrumentation, and the latter rip is a melodyswap playing Everybody Wants To Rule The World. They all play on my senses in their own ways, they're all rightfully impressive - but nothing hits quite the same as Minecraft's own music, on its own terms. i love(d) you isn't aiming to impress or amaze - but it lands a full-on critical hit on one's heart through leveraging everything that's kept Subwoofer Lullaby alive for so many years.
I've talked plenty about my musical illiteracy, and so I hope it doesn't come as a surprise that I've never really listened to world-renowed singer Billie Eilish. She's been on the radio, I've heard Bad Guy, but it was never a name I gave much more thought beyond seeing her discussed online from time to time. You can imagine the absolute awe I was in when I clicked on i love(d) you when it first went up, already expecting an emotional hit due to the Minecraft song used, only to get goosebumps from Eilish's vocals alone. i love you is the penultimate song from Eilish's debut studio album, the very same that Bad Guy was featured on - yet compared to that track's bass-heavy, almost seductive energy, i love you feels remarkably personal, with little more than an acoustic guitar and piano accompanying the openly emotional vocal performance. It's sincere in a way I don't hear enough music be, as if a diary translated into song, much the same emotion that Because I Love You conveyed yet with even greater magnitude due to the vocals in play.
i love(d) you, uploaded for 2022's valentines day, wields both of these forms of love - the connections many of us have to one of the most impactful games ever made, and the unfiltered emotion of i love you - to create something unabashedly beautiful. Mashups aren't a novel concept, mashups are nothing new - yet one glance at the comments tells me that I'm not alone in finding this rip in particular to have struck an incredibly sensitive nerve. Because there's a beauty to Minecraft that I think many of us oft forget about. It's a game that we all cherish, yet also one that's very easy to have left behind: we have adult responsibilities, we have school, we have other, shorter, more concise games, we have social media, we have friends, we have blogs...the solemn beauty of playing the game itself is, for many viewers like myself, not much more than a memory, something that can feel ever so difficult to recreate without feeling as if something's wrong.
We...I'm...not a kid anymore.
There was nothing about i love(d) you's concept that necessitated it to be more than just the mashup. There rip had no need for visuals that'd help convey the edit like with Plantasia 2 or Luna, mi Amor, no need to tickle the funnybone like with SUNGORE or the hundreds of other YTPMV rips on the channel. Yet, halfway through the rip, to the tune of Eilish's soothingly reverberating vocals, the background begins to change, not to a bit, not to a reference nor easter egg...but to Minecraft. To where all of this attachment began - to a far-off view of the game's beautiful landscapes as the sun begins to rises. That digital world that looks different for every player, yet the same in everyone's hearts - that place that, no matter how many years pass, how long its been since we last played, we all love. Its impact different to everyone, yet the feeling unanimous. It drives home how well the mashup works not just as a mixture of two deeply emotional songs, but as music tied to a shared experience: all of our Minecraft worlds looked different, all of our personal lives look different, but we've all played the game, and we've all had affection for it.
Every moment I spend thinking about this rip aches in some way. It's been well past two years since it was first uploaded, yet it continues to follow me as the years go on, my mouse drawn to it any time it reappears in my recommendations. In being featured on 2024's Now That's What I Call Quality! 3, I think the team holds much the same sentiment - even as the months pass, i love(d) you is the kind of rip that'll never fall out of favor, never stop meaning things to people. And realizing that it was made by vvsvlogs, the very same vvsvlogs who's already made me far too emotionally vulnerable on here twice before, has only made it mean that extra bit more to me.
I'm not a kid anymore. I know that. But I'll always be grateful to SiIvaGunner, the people behind it, and those who follow it along with me, for being able to bring me back to that state of mind when I least expect it.
Thank you.

Whump Fic Recs pt. 1 (& a brief love letter and tagging tutorial)
Ah, whump, my most beloved genre of fanfiction. What is whump? Whump refers to stories prominently featuring injury or sickness and/or the care and recovery thereof. This is most often in the hurt/comfort category or the hurt no comfort category. It is a wonderful opportunity to shake up dynamics and reveal hidden character depths in a high stress situation. What do you do when the strong one is hurt? How does that call into question your feelings towards them? How does that call into question their feelings towards themself and their role? Who will care for the one who always caretakes? It’s a great tonal shift too. Just *chef’s kiss*. Plus, you know what? It’s sometimes just fun to run your favorite characters through the plinko.
How do you tag whump and why should you? The tags on ao3 to use are”
“Whump” (not just “whumptober” or “whumptober 2022″ or other variations),
“hurt/comfort” or “hurt no comfort”
“angst”
“sickfic” if illness is the featured whump
“injury recovery” if such a thing is covered
“torture”, “car accidents”, “broken bones”, “blood and injury”, “blood and violence”, etc as relevant (start typing into the additional tags section to see what the common tag is to use.
“Character Name Whump” or “Hurt Character Name” if in a specific fandom whumping a specific character
all of the previous should be used in addition to the base whump tag.
if relevant, use the archive warning “graphic depictions of violence”
why tag? BECAUSE I WANNA READ IT AND FIND IT AND IT IS WOEFULLY UNDERTAGGED. It is also good to tag if someone wants to avoid it by excluding it from the search.
Alright. On to the recs. Multifandom including The Mechanisms, The Magnus Archives, King Falls AM, The Adventure Zone, Our Flag Means Death, The Murderbot Diaries, and Stargate SG-1. There will be more whump recs to come.
On Account Of The Jonny Doll by NammiKisulora
Fandom: The Mechanisms
Ah, NammiKisulora knows how to make these immortals hurt in such twisted and unique ways.
“Yeah. Get in, will you? I want to get going. Jonny keeps waking up. W-without skin.” “Oh Yes! That Must Be On Account Of The Jonny Doll!”
Jonny is executed, which is a normal enough occurrence. It’s only afterwards things go wrong.
We Still Have the Radio - I. and We Still Have the Radio - II. by luckjustkissedyouhello
Fandom: King Falls AM
luckjustkissedyouhello writes some damn good, damn brutal whump!
The next thing he’s aware of is water against his face, wait no, all of him, where he lays on his left side. Water that is rapidly rising. He lays there dazed. Then a groan above his head has him jerking back into the moment, fear lancing through him, stealing his breath. Ben.
In which Ben and Sammy are in a car accident.
bleeding by Athina_Blaine
Fandom: The Magnus Archives
Martin goes and gets himself stabbed. It's inconvenient.
Re-Initialization by CompletelyDifferent
Fandom: The Murderbot Diaries
This Unit: Where is my owner, Dr. Mensah?
Dr. Yuen: Well, that’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? SecUnit, where did you last physically interact with Dr. Ayda Mensah?
Information Retrieval: Dr. Ayda Mensah last interacted with This Unit on Preservation Station at 08:27:22 on 4098-09-17 CRST.
This Unit: You do not have permission to access that information.
Dr. Yuen: You’re incorrect, SecUnit. We do. Answer the question.
(When the infamous rogue SecUnit of the Preservation Alliance gets captured, the corporate techs assigned to it expected to be able to get some juicy data, or at least some insights into its cracked governor module. They didn't expect something so... basic.)
trust me by gaysidecharacter
Fandom: The Adventure Zone: Balance
Everyone gets real sick and Lup is having a time.
Not an echo even by Hopeful_Foolx
Fandom: The Magnus Archives
They stop the Unknowing. There is an explosion. And trapped under rubble and panic, Jon wakes up. So does Tim. Three prompts, one story. Starting with Day 4 - Running out of Time
Friends in Strange Places by beesandcats
Fandom: Our Flag Means Death
"Steel in your side for so long was a weird feeling, Stede decided. It had actually been around hour six that he came to the conclusion, if anyone was keeping track. It had been around hour three, when he heard the snores from the other side of the deck, that he realized he should perhaps try to be friends with the steel in his side. Obviously, they were not friends."
A missing scene from Season 1, Episode 6. Stede's been stabbed and stuck to a pole all night. He's gonna need some help when everyone wakes up for the day.
Things Stay the Same by teyla
Fandom: King Falls AM
During blizzard season, Ben and Sammy, each for their own reasons, make an unwise choice. The experience that ensues should be life changing—though is it?
In which there is a snowstorm, an accident, a soaked through jacket, and thoughts of revealing secrets.
Lifestock by NammiKisulora
Fandom: The Mechanisms
"Guys, you get what this means? It means fresh meat, every day for as long as we like." "The fuck are you talking about?" "Just sayin' we could leave his leg attached, tie him up, and bring him along. Carve off what we like at mealtimes instead. We dunno how long we've got to lie low for."
Tim is held captive for food after a battle.
Between A Rock And A Hard Place by Sam Walker
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
To save Daniel’s life, Jack has to do that hardest of all things: talk.
This fic is written from Jack's perspective. Daniel is involved in an accident off-world and the only thing Jack can do to help is talk to Daniel while everyone else works. I love this fic for the interaction between Jack and Daniel, and for the insights into Jack's motivations. Despite being mostly Jack and Daniel, you get a sense of camaraderie about SG1 and you can see just how much Jack cares about his team.
And if you read any of these, be sure to leave kind comments for the authors!

Fic Rec 💚 Matchablossom - 2023 Birthday Edition (SK8 the Infinity)
My birthday is next Thursday!!! 🥳🥳🥳 And what's better way to celebrate than talking about the stuff I enjoyed the past year?
First up, Matchablossom!
Kaoru and Kojiro and the whole gang was such a comfort in 2022. I can always count on SK8 to elevate my mood whenever I feel down, esp Matchablossom. 🍵 🌸
Here are some fics that I adored reading in 2022 -
Title: the elements of entropy
Author: ailurea
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 11,606
Summary:
Kojiro's goal has always been to start his own restaurant, so he makes a plan to skip university and train with chefs all across the world. Kaoru refuses to let him go alone. (Alternatively: Kojiro and Kaoru—then, now, and forever.)
---
Title: the skateboarding chef who can't stop thinking about his best friend
Author: architecture_in_f1ll0ry
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 4,217
Summary:
This week, a mostly-straight man has casual flings while navigating an intriguing relationship with his childhood friend: 26, single, Okinawa. Inspired by the Sex Diaries series in The Cut.
---
Title: How Little We Know
Author: beelligerence
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 13,902
Summary:
Kojiro sighs softly and smiles, mostly to himself, as Kaoru talks. He really doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life wondering ‘what if.’ And he doesn’t want to wait any longer, not when he’s already waited long enough. “Hey, Kaoru,” Kojiro says, interrupting Kaoru’s current train of thought. “What do you want, oaf?” Kaoru asks, irritated. “Will you go out on a date with me?” Kojiro has spent more than half of his life in love with Kaoru. He’s tired of waiting.
---
Title: Facade
Author: bitterheart
Rating: Teen
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 11,964
Summary:
The first time Kojiro hears from Kaoru after the breakup is after six days of radio silence. He's using his clipped professional tone that he usually saves for work phone calls when he says, "I was reviewing our—my calendar, and I realised that we sent an RSVP to your family holiday next week." "Right." Kojiro turns the burner of the stove off and presses his phone a little harder against his ear. "I'll, uh. Give my parents a call." "You haven't told them yet, have you." It's not a question, and Kaoru isn't gentle about the way he says it. Kojiro loves him—used to love him for that sort of thing. Two weeks after breaking up, Kojiro and Kaoru attend a holiday with Kojiro's family and pretend they're still together.
---
Title: Misfire
Author: bitterheart
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 10,404
Summary:
Kojiro pauses for a moment, carefully considering what he's about to do. He takes a breath, and sends: Show me how you'd sext. Kojiro accidentally sends Kaoru a sext meant for someone else. Things get a little out of hand.
---
Title: The Himbofication of Nanjo Kojiro
Author: crinklefries
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 30,378
Summary:
The thing about emotional consequences is that they have all of the gut-punch, full body aching of a physical consequence. They are all-encompassing, overwhelming, terrible, and completely inescapable. In this case, Kojiro could have easily avoided the emotional consequences to his actions if he had just tried. But he hadn’t—because Nanjo Kojiro is nothing if not a complete fucking idiot. And it was no one’s fault but his own that he had agreed to hook up with his best friend. * * * Kaoru comes up with the great, great idea to become friends with benefits. Kojiro listens to him. Now why did you go and do that, Kojiro?
---
Title: rose and shining dew on every buttercup
Author: faintneko
Rating: General
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 4,534
Summary:
Kaoru has a little shadow and Kojiro thinks it’s the most hilarious (sweetest) thing to ever happen.
---
Title: home is an anchor
Author: Marks
Rating: Teen
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 12,968
Summary:
It had been a long time since Kaoru had properly appreciated Okinawa. Sometimes his clients would come from the mainland, or even overseas, and they always seemed so impressed by things that Kaoru always took for granted. It was like that fake story about frogs staying in gradually boiling water; maybe growing up around it meant that Kaoru could never see what was so great about it. Or maybe he just needed to take a step back and examine it from a new angle. Perspective was very important for calligraphy, after all, and it was giving him an idea. Kaoru is stressed out, so he decides to go on vacation, but stay local. Obviously, Kojiro comes along.
---
Title: it's always been you
Author: onlydaisy
Rating: Teen
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 22,811
Summary:
Kaoru isn’t in love with Kojiro. He repeats this to himself each morning, when his phone lights up with a ‘good morning’ from Kojiro, an hour later when he shows up outside his door to walk to school and greets him with a tight hug, and then consistently throughout the rest of the day as Kojiro continues to make him suffer. Kaoru isn’t in love with him, he won’t let himself be. Or- Five times Kojiro and Kaoru almost kiss, and one time they do.
---
Title: the heart is a mirror
Author: sepulcher
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Word Count: 9,880
Summary:
“Let’s get married,” Kojiro said. (It was the phenomenon of being so close to something that you lose the details, or knowing something so well and so confidently that you don’t bother to look twice.)
---
Title: tangled roots, steady waters
Author: wintersrose616
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Word Count: 7,357
Summary:
“If you behave,” Kaoru drawls, raising an eyebrow, “I will.” Kojiro’s lips part, an answer of some sort on the tip of his tongue, but before he can say anything, a familiar, metallic voice rings out through the studio. Your appointment is at 2:30, in half an hour. It’s time to leave. Both Kaoru and Kojiro freeze before Kaoru sits up, any intention on continuing this path for the afternoon gone, replaced by a mask of smooth, but false, professionalism. “No—,” Kojiro starts, but Kaoru’s running a hand through his hair, smoothing out tangles as he ignores him. “Thank you, Carla,” he calls. “Kaoru— ” . As pseudo dads of three rambunctious teenagers on top of their day jobs, they don't often get alone time. or, five times Joe and Cherry get interrupted, and one night they get to themselves.

Mick Schumacher explains how new Mercedes reserve driver role left him feeling shocked
Mick Schumacher has opened up about his time at Mercedes so far as he gets stuck into his reserve driver role and simulator duties for the eight-time constructors’ champions, admitting that one particular moment left him feeling “quite shocked”. Schumacher competed in Formula 1 with Haas in 2021 and 2022 but lost his race seat to Nico Hulkenberg for the 2023 campaign and subsequently moved over to Mercedes, taking on a back-up role behind full-time drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. READ MORE: From Brawn GP’s fairytale to Aston Martin’s super start – The biggest year-on-year performance jumps in F1 history In a new diary for the official Mercedes website, Schumacher spoke about his first few months at the factory and trackside, his duties in the simulator and how he is trying to be a helpful addition to the workforce “wherever I can”. “Since I joined Mercedes, I’ve been settling in great,” said Schumacher. “Everybody is just so open-minded towards me, and that made me feel welcome from the first moment I stepped into the factory in Brackley. I’ve spent a lot of time there in these first months. It’s a very impressive facility. “I’m still getting used to the level of preparation that you see here, and I am trying to soak up as much information as I can. Also, there’s still a lot of people I haven’t met but it’s been fun getting to know as many colleagues as I can. Schumacher is sporting Mercedes colours in the paddock this season “My main focus up to now has been working in the simulator. Because I have raced a car under this new set of regulations, I have a good understanding of how to drive them. That has helped me in my role so far and hopefully added value for the team. I will look to be an extra pair of eyes and resource to help with the development programme across the year. “The simulator team have been super kind to me and great to work with. It’s impressive to drive the sim because it’s just so advanced, and I have been pushing to do more. It’s not enough for me to just sit on the side-lines, I want to be helpful wherever I can. Of course, it’s not the real thing and I would love to be driving the W14!” READ MORE: ‘No huge breakthroughs, but we’ve moved forward’ – Mercedes describe ‘quiet satisfaction’ after Melbourne Schumacher, whose dad Michael raced for Mercedes from 2010-2012, also highlighted what he has learned from Hamilton and Russell so far, and how he has been taken aback by the number of radio conversations across the team during on-track sessions. “It’s also been fascinating working with Lewis and George,” he continued. “It’s an interesting period for me as I get to look over and work with two fantastic drivers, which you don’t always get to do. Working with Hamilton and Russell has been “fascinating” for Schumacher “I’ve learned a lot about what’s important in terms of approaching race weekends; I feel like I’ve already gained so much knowledge to add to my skillset. I didn’t think I would have learned and gained so much so early into my role. “As a driver, you usually do not get to hear what is going on between all the engineers while you are out on the track, so listening in during the sessions has been extremely interesting. I was quite shocked at the season opener in Bahrain, I did not expect the sheer amount of exchange that happens. READ MORE: Horner responds to Russell’s suggestion that Red Bull are sandbagging with their RB19 “You don’t know what you’re missing until you are actually part of it. What I really appreciate in working with those engineers is that they are genuinely listening to you and your opinion matters, and what is special from an emotional side is that many people who are working for the team now were working here when my dad was driving.” After a challenging start to the 2023 season in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the recent Australian Grand Prix marked a step forward for Mercedes, with Hamilton finishing second to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

My year in mix 1997 (part 1 of 12)
Inspired by something going down over on Bluesky, this is My Year in Mix.
My year is 1997, and twelve posts will cover all the important aspects of popular music from this year. 60 videos, some songs that will be familiar even if you weren't a glint in your mother's eye, some that passed everyone by at the time.
Part one: The Evening Session
Radio 1's essential guide to new music, enthusiastically hosted by Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley. The fizzing and cracking sounds of youth culture, none of the old farts who prop up daytimes.
"In your car" - Kenickie. Start the year as we mean to go on. Smell the glitter! Wear the PVC!
Go out, have fun, be reckless, wake up with a massive hangover.
Even when your band's gig is cancelled by a fire alarm and you're tipped out into the street, we'll have a time.
"The Spice Girls with guitars" said Kavana in a Smash Hits review.
"Your woman" - White Town. You won't find Jyoti Mishra at the club. He stayed in, recorded the song in his bedroom. Ambiguous lyric meets early-80s chiptune and 1930s sample.
Promoted by late evening presenters Mark and Lard, and the most unlikely chart-topper ever. Anyone can get to the top!
Gave Jyoti a lot more fame than he could deal with, so he rather pulled back from promotion. Even more than the song, that is his greatest legacy: the idea of "as much fame as you're comfortable with".
Bonus! Jyoti of White Town rarely gave interviews, then or now. He spoke to KEXP in 2022.
"Mum's gone to iceland" - Bennet. Very much an Evening Session band: quirky but not too outlandish, different and familiar at the same time. Their best work was "Someone always gets there first", but that's from 1996 and Too Darned Old.
Became an albatross around the band's neck, people expected them to be this witty and funny all the time. They're not Philip Pope, they're what Blur could have been if "Popscene" was their template.
"Drop dead gorgeous" - Republica. Second time was the charm for this all-out blaster. Drive down the highway, have this blasting out the windows.
Every note, every chord, every word counts. And just hear the venom in her voice.
Re-released in time for the Westminster election: public to John Major, "drop dead".
"Susan's house" - Eels.
Los Angeles was a tough-minded but generous muse. It offered Everett odd jobs, casual contacts, failed love affairs, deep depression and a crumbling sense of self-worth. For Everett, these were all reasons to sing. His support and refuge was the four-track, which he used to compile his early years in California into melodic diaries. Although the narrative's starting point, as always in Everett's music, was in the man's own life, the narrative's focus was outside the experiencer. In Susan's House, Everett was narrating the city itself, not himself in the city. Along his walks, Everett painted apish views from the edge of Los Angeles County; bushy, piquant details merged with gritty, sharp observations of the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Along the route, ambulance men stripped a boy shot to death, a demented woman who lost her home in a fire smashed bottles on cement, a young girl pushing a baby carriage walked by. They, together with the street scenes that surrounded them, were the real stars of the song.

Jacopo Perosino - La rivoluzione terrestre

Top 5 Indie Albums of 2022 You Probably Missed
by K. Chastain
A college radio DJ reviews some of the hidden gems of underground alternative rock released this year.
1. Sophia Bel - Anxious Avoidant
Michigan-born Québécoise artist Sophia Bel released her debut album this year, Anxious Avoidant, which showcases her soft and emotional vocals over a genre-spanning folk-rock landscape. Focusing on the themes of love, attachment, and the desire for connection amidst the difficult circumstances of a pandemic-afflicted world, Bel's intricate lyrics evoke the intimacy of a diary entry yet maintain a professional level of polish. From the spacey, synth-heavy hit “You're Not Real You're Just A Ghost” to the softer, folk-influenced ballad “I Won't Bite,” every track on this album has something a little different to offer its listeners. With its candid, youthful approach to the weighty topics of love and missed connections, Bel is able to deliver a mature and emotional story in a colorful, radio-friendly package.
2. SASAMI - Squeeze
An artist of many talents, Los Angeles-based SASAMI presents us with an intense yet beautiful collection of songs on Squeeze. Released earlier this year, SASAMI’s sophomore album draws inspiration from softer folk sounds while incorporating the heaviness of metal and hard rock. Capturing the power and brooding darkness of the nu-metal genre while maintaining a faithfulness to the melodic and narrative elements of country, Squeeze fuses these genres in unexpected and beautiful ways. From the power ballad “The Greatest” to the lamenting, chaotic “Sorry Entertainer,” SASAMI showcases her range of expression on this brilliant release.
3. Yumi Zouma - Present Tense
New Zealand-based collaborative project Yumi Zouma has released their seventh album, Present Tense, this year. Embodying their dreamy, shoegaze-inspired sound, this album is easy for new listeners to approach. From the catchy, hopeful track “In The Eyes of Our Love” to the softer and more dissonant “Astral Projection,” there is a delicate and pensive rhythm that runs throughout this album. Fans of their previous instrumentals will not be disappointed, as Yumi Zouma consistently delivers the dreamy sound they have become well-known for. The evolution of their music is evident in the experimental direction of some of their new tracks, as in the simplicity of “Razorblade” and the beautifully layered “If I Had the Heart for Chasing.”
4. Momma - Household Name
The Los Angeles rock outfit Momma returns triumphantly on the album Household Name. Drawing clear influence from 90's rock, this album delivers catchy and driving garage rock sounds with underlying poppy, upbeat melodies. The hit “Medicine” shows off the band's capacity to craft grooving, memorable riffs, while the more confessional “Rockstar” is vulnerable yet empowering in its lyrics about the beginning stages of forming a band. The album also slows into more tender, introspective tracks like “Brave” and “Rip Off.” Equal parts melodic and brash, this album brilliantly touches on the moodiness of decades past without losing its originality.
5. Carla Geneve - Learn to Like It
Carla Geneve, who hails from Western Australia, brings us some of the most beautifully crafted lyricism of the year on her debut full-length album Learn to Like It. Weaving an intricate narrative from start to finish, each track immerses us in the gritty depths of our emotions while delivering a consistently clean folk-inspired sound. Some of the tracks, such as the high-energy “Dog Eared,” opt for the use of grungier electric guitar, while the softer ballad “The Right Reasons” sounds acoustically raw and real. The album thoughtfully explores themes of isolation, self-discovery and the desire for connections, which figure prominently on tracks like “Brisbane” and “Brighter than Blue.”
