Westliche Karwendelspitze - Mittenwald, Germany

We took a bus ride to the Bavarian Alps today. Our first stop was at Karwendelspitze (pictured above), we took the cable car up to the mountain top. Then we hiked around a bit and enjoyed the spectacular views and wildflowers. There were multiple groups of people doing what appeared to be a ridge trail, they were all in helmets and had ropes. We watched them make their way along a portion of it, Dan was wanting to do it, but he didn’t have the right equipment! He and Doug did do a little out-and-back hike, I decided to just stay and enjoy the view (my knee was still recovering from a bit of a sprain).

The view from the restaurant was awesome. The food was really quite delicious, not your typical ski-lodge fare, and the beer was good, too. They had a very cool still in the restaurant, we didn’t taste any of their spirits.

We rode the cable car back down to Mittenwald. Our plan was to take the local bus out to the Ghostly Gorge, a hike through a gorge on suspended platforms. Unfortunately, the bus schedule was limited and we could not make it out to the gorge and back before we had to catch our bus back to Munich. We found a park to hang out at in Mittenwald until it was time to catch our bus. Really bummed that we weren’t able to make the gorge happen. Our bus ride back to Munich was miserable, the AC wasn’t working and it was hot and stuffy - we were so happy to get off the bus into some fresh air!

The Isar River runs through Mittenwald, we walked a bit along the trail next to the river before finding a beer garden to cool off at!
