-the character boops sound too much like breathing. In undertale it was done to set the creepypasta atmosphere but in here it feels like I need an option to disable it lol

+blonde girl has a fucked up sleep schedule so I can say hi to her every night

+music is nice

+I like the character maker, nice options. Also everybody having the same doe sprite means that your farmers body type can be whatever you want without having to make new sprites

Kinda two questions here, first have you checked out the fields of misteria? Apparently (cause I haven’t played it) it’s like stardew valley but more fantasy?

Two lately I’ve been struggling badly with eyes and face spacing. How do you space the eyes under the brows, heck how do you draw eyes?

i've seen it around! it's a little too anime for my tastes rn though 😅

for eyes, do you mean horizontal or vertical spacing?

for horizontal, i think everyone knows about the 'one eye width between the eyes' guideline, but i've never followed it bc i stylize & draw the eyes bigger than they would be on a real life person. what i like to use as a guideline instead is seeing if i can draw a vertical line from the inner corner of the eyes to the sides of the nostrils, following the contours of the face. this works for 3/4 views too, you just have to use your imagination to visualize where the other side of the nose is & where the line would come down

i do use this same reference line to draw the nose, so it's a bit of a guess-and-check thing where you might have to go back and forth between fixing up the eyes and fixing up the nose, but i still find it helpful to have the line as a constraint

for vertical spacing, whenever i think the eye placement i've drawn is wonky, it's usually due to the eyes' placement with relation to the nose. with the way i draw the face, the eyes/brows/nose bridge come first and everything else is dependent on that, so i can usually trace my issues back to these foundational features. i usually try to place that divot between the brow & the nose slightly above the horizontal line between the eyes

usually my issue is that i've placed that divot too low, so i'll redraw it to raise it

as for where to place the brows vertically, i really just go by feel, and when something feels off with the brows it's usually because i drew them too high ^^" if i have doubts though i often test brow placement by cutting the brows onto another layer and literally moving them around until they look right

Caldarus had known the magic was slowly coming back to Misteria. He had lulled into a deep slumber on the precipice of what mortals might consider death, how long had it been now? He couldn't recall. Everything from his senses to his thoughts were almost disconnected from him entirely. Like being underwater and hearing something muffled and far away. A pinprick of light filled his vision and he felt gentle warmth flood his face.

*Light?* The dragon spirit blinked, and slowly vision returned to him. Two mortals of smallish stature was standing before one of the dragon statues he could inhabit to see into the mortal realm of existence.

A male and female stood staring up at him with wide eyes and their mouths slightly open before glancing at one another and celebrating happily with word.

"Amazing!" The man breather heavily, sweat beading on his warm skin, pale hair curling at the ends.

"YESSS!" The female punched the air and did a small dance in place. "oh it looks so cool! And it's just been here?!"

"Yes," the male responded as the female slammed a worn axe into the tree trunk and folded her arms across her chest. The male was explaining something to her and she nodded along, eagerly soaking up the information as if nothing else in the world matter than his next breath.

Caldarus watched lazily, trying to regain enough strength to stay aware. When had a tree grown there? Who were these mortals? Why was he so weak, so tired? What happened to the magic? His eyes fluttered closed again, and sleep overtook him.

Me, deranged: Reina from Fields of Misteria makes me think of Momina...I should customize my character to look like Hayato and then romance her.

What’s the difference between field of mistria and stardew? They look surface level very similar to me!

a lot actually! i think they seem similar due to the pixel art style and the fact theyre both farming sims but again i wouldnt immediately equate every new pixel style farming sim to stardew. they’re both pretty different i’d say and for me at least feel different when playing.

i also think its important to say that fields of mistria is still an early access game which means its not completed yet and will be worked on by the devs still to add and incorporate more features. so what we see right now is an early version of what the game will have to offer in say a few years from now.

fields of mistria reminds me more of harvest moon than stardew valley if thats maybe a better point of reference for you.

i’d say fields of mistria feels almost more whimsical and magical in a way. its this cute little town that feels like youre in a cozy fantasy world and theres this underlining plot with the dragon statues and you can gain magical powers to help you farm and do a lot things and theres a mana mechanic. its all very fun and cutesy. you join the town as an adventurer not as a farmer but you take of a plot of land where you can farm and take care of animals.

the farming is very much like every other sim but that doesnt mean it isnt good its just what you expect when playing a farming sim.

what i really loved about fields of misteria is that the characters and the town feels genuinely alive. the events and all the dialogue between characters is amazing and makes them feel like they really exist. you actually start to look forward to these weekly events and what everyone has to say. very early on in the game you can tell there was a lot of thought and care put into the npcs and the dynamics around them. oh and theres so much love put into the art it’s incredible how good this game looks.

to me stardew feels a lot more Go fast, do this task you have a time limit, you want to get this done before a certain season, very fast paced and maximizing everything meanwhile fields of misteria feels a lot more adapted towards anyones pace. it doesnt feel like youre punished for taking a slower style of play. feels like you can actually appreciate and cherish working on every skill the game offers like archeology, blacksmithing, farming, fishing, etc. every part of the game feels like its made so that you find the time to work on every feature.

also this isnt shade towards stardew i adore that game and have played it for years. its just important to differentiate games sometimes cause im sure the devs dont want to be constantly hearing theyre another stardew valley. because they arent. its field of mistria babey 

so yeah i’d say give it a try its a very cozy game. especially if ur into farming sims you should 100% give it a try. it has an incredible amount of potential and i personally cannot wait to see how this game evolves and what’ll offer in the future

New Year, New Blog + Game Updates

Hello! My usual online name is lepapillonrouge, but I usually go by paps! I've been the writer of one visual novel released for Spooktober a few years ago, Tales of Misteria and working on another one currently called To Become a Tengu, the demo that was released in...2022.....for otome jam...

This blog was created to replace my old Twitter account regarding game dev of visual novels (er, the one otome game that I've been working on right now) so that people who have been looking forward to playing To Become a Tengu can get more status updates than what we've been posting on TBaT's itch.io page. Also, to hold myself more accountable for updates, especially since I'm going through a major life change (I had a baby in December). To Become a Tengu (demo)

Now, for current updates for To Become a Tengu: - In terms of routes, Takane's is 100% completed (rough draft) - Nitori's is about 70% complete and I'm really glad about that since the ending for this route is what I was looking forward to writing... Once we complete the writing for all routes, we will be finishing up the cgs, any art we need to complete, and looking for voice actors to voice some of the CGs. Finally got into the Engage groove. Sat down and went from 10 to 15.

Something about MC's "I can't do this without you!" at the Emblems is really funny. Big waifufag energy.

Again, another point where I wish the Emblems were original characters. You could actually do something interesting with Alear having some kinda mildly codependent relationship with the Emblems in spite of them not being truly alive if they weren't cool iconic FE characters that need to be objectively good and admirable at all times.

Heck, you could address the unsettling idea of the Emblems not being truly alive in the first place! They identify themselves as Emblem Name, which means even they see themselves as a derivative. Are they trapped in a hell of undeath, watching everyone around them age and die? Do they still feel the human need for interaction? They get used as weapons against their consent-- isn't that an awful existence? Why would they want to become an Emblem in the first place? They're like the cookies from Black Mirror...nightmarish.

Interesting characterization glimmer from Alcryst. His boss convo with his dad has him saying that he wants to be the one to kill dad in order to spare Diamant having to do it. Damn, son

The sad piano music on the retreat chapter is nice.

I don't get why localization did that with the shitenno names...they're supposed to be colors. Mauvier and Griss are recognizably colors, but the girls are weird. Zephia = Sepia, Marni = Maroon (or maybe Marron, the French version).

Fogado feels like the character the fandom wanted Claude to be lmao

Also not sure why they renamed his sister? She's Misteria in Japanese, the siblings are fog and mist, that's the joke.

Starting to suffer on supports. As of chapter 15, MC doesn't have one B support. They took away support-building on the enemy phase and two-space supporting, which makes it a massive pain in the ass to get support points. I've been doing arena and cafe after every battle, too! Squeezing as many support points as possible outta this, but it still ain't much

Reclassing ends up being kind of an odd beast thanks to how Emblem-dependant it is. Losing your initial batch of Emblems takes away your ability to spread weapon proficiencies around, which hobbles your ability to reclass for several chapters. Compounding that, it's a good while before you can buy Second Seals, and money is very tight. If you have a unit who starts off in a class not suited to their growths (Jean, Clanne) they're kinda just fucked. What's the point of designing a system with so much flexibility only to take away your ability to use it for most of the game? I would have preferred the system be more stripped-down and actually usable.

Goddamn, do I feel the money crunch. Buying gifts? In THIS economy?

Glimpses of the Past

"Brother, brother!!!"

The pitter-patter of small feet soon quietened; Not because the younger prince stopped in his tracks, but rather because he was now flying at his elder at dangerous speeds. Zooming right past palace staff with little regard for the expensive crystal china which proceeded to tumble to the floor with one final, pitiful shriek as it shattered into fragments upon the ornate tiles.

If Prince White Cloud had slowed down enough to witness the carnage, he would have likely cried. All big, teary eyes and trickles of snot, he would have likely become a rain cloud in his own right.

His little Rain Cloud. A common nickname used by the elder, a smirk creeping onto the Fog's features as a pale hand ruffled the storm of white fluff adorning the top of the much shorter youngster.

Alas, the time was scarcely for rain. The little bullet of white practically slammed into his brother's form, earning a muffled "oof" from the taller Misterian.

"Chén loa! What's the matter, you little scoundrel? Missed me this much already?" The Red Fog teased relentlessly, slender digits already buried in his brother's hair. A few giggles escaped the snowy prince, even when his entire frame was being shaken with the energetic ruffles.

Prince White Cloud had always been a timid child, prone to indulging in various degrees of escapism. Perhaps sitting hours upon hours in the royal tutoring halls did not serve him as well as the King and Queen hoped - yes, he was indeed a naturalborn prodigy, absorbing knowledge like a hungry sponge and picking up skills with near unprecedented speed. But here was the catch:

The timid Prince White Cloud was also a ball of pent-up energy. Eyes darting to-and-fro, captivated by every noise and sight, especially when he was supposed to be sitting quiet and doing maths. Needless to say, his half-completed papers oft earned him quite the scolding from his father.

Scorned jade eyes looking down upon his son whose own likewise verdant gaze failed to meet his. Lord Crimson Haze could easily fill the room with his presence, even without the use of Mist. Every true King ruled with love and fear alike, commandeering both with the practiced finesse of a maestro - and the nation was his faithful orchestra.

It was something that the Cloud liked to question. Why did one need fear to keep a people obedient..? "Because each people is made up of sound minds and fools alike. And the sooner the fools get tall ideas, the sooner a nation teeters on the brink."

He never did like how freely his father deemed other Misterians "fools". When his Brother called him an idiot, it was somehow much kinder.

His Brother was kind. Grumpy sometimes, but kind.

He wanted to be like Brother. Dutiful. Focused. Worthy of being called a Prince of Misteria. Perhaps even, one day, worthy of the Sword in Crystal.

Crystals were supposed to focus light, weren't they..? Single-minded. Channeling fire from the sun without the use of magic. He liked to imagine himself in a similar manner. That, if he could only set his mind to one, singular thing like Brother, that his passion could set fire to the sky.

So he took up the blade. Not because he truly loved the weight of a handle in his grip, or the dangerous glimmer of cutting-edge lethality. Not because he honestly believed that the sword was his spirit, nor wanted to bind a part of himself to it forever.

"Brother!!" White Cloud hollered, a red flush of excitement flooding his cheeks. "Let's spar!! Right now!!"

Red Fog allowed one brow to climb higher. "Sure, I should be free after class -"

"No! Not after claa-aass! I don't wanna wait! Please! Now!"

"Brother I -"

"Pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepl -"

The heir to the throne let out an incredulous sigh. If there was anything the boy was truly weak to, it was his little brother's barrage of pleas. "Fine."

And so, that was what became of Prince Red Fog and Prince White Cloud's lives from then on. Daily spars, wooden blade against wooden blade, cautious and afraid to draw blood. Eventually, the elder's thrill-seeking, crazy streak demanded live weapons. White Cloud obliged gladly, happy to delve deeper into the mind of his beloved Brother. Was there a meaning in the rush of adrenaline, leaving them panting and their hearts racing rabbit-like with each close call as their weapons met? Was this... the true Red Fog, the feverish glint in his eyes as he gave everything, everything that he was -

- to mastering this one thing.

The one, singular thing that made him, truly him. His Brother. His, and no one else's.

They became one another's obsession. But there was still one thing that the Red Fog valued higher than his own kin. It was the art of combat. It was the weight of the handle in his grip, the dangerous glimmer of cutting-edge lethality. And he honestly believed that the sword was his spirit, and one day bound a part of himself to it forever.

....Naturally, if his Brother was obsessed with swords, so was White Cloud.

"Keep going! Have at thee!" The crimson prince swung wildly, a strength behind the slice that sent his younger reeling. A puff of white Mist escaped the shorter boy's lips, dissolving harmlessly into the cool air of the courtyard.

"Hyaaah!"

Clang. Clang! Their blades met, casting sparks. It was more than combat. It was art. Their steps like ancestral dance, passed on throughout the generations. Tracing the lines carved in the dust and taking to the sky, circling one another like raptors, locking talons. Like a pair of mighty Mist Dragons, ensnared in the coils of one another's strength. Nothing in the whole world existed aside from them, their personal accelerando, their shared passion and the bond of understanding forged, steel-strong, between their thrumming hearts.

And it was then that he parried the Madou, a masterful stroke redirecting its fury like one would calm a racing melody into softer notes. The impact deflected, the younger Prince tensed his whole body and delivered a powerful kick that finally threw the crimson swordsman off-balance.

Shiiiing.

The blade of his sword stopped a mere hair's breadth away from his Brother's jugular. Something in his mind screamed that it was wrong. You idiot, you absolute fool! You could have killed him. He could have killed you.

"Brother...!" He called, breathlessly. Jade eyes alight with the burning ardor of victory.

Crimson eyes, so unshakable, were wide. For once, his elder did not speak. Did not chuckle and twirl his own weapon, ever the showoff. Did not reach over to find a head of snowy locks and ruffle the Cloud until it became a rightful Cumulus. Prince Red Fog was silent, and suddenly, the bond of understanding was broken. White Cloud had no idea what could possibly be going on behind the veil of vermilion.

"B....brother..?" The younger Misterian took a step forward, jade orbs overcast with worry. This wasn't... right. It did not feel right. Was victory supposed to taste this bitter? When the rush of adrenaline was so sweet?

...Would his Brother love him more now, when he finally surpassed his singular obsession? Now that he was the one who held his sibling's life in his hands, the thin red line of everything that he stood for.

"Did I do good, Brother?" White Cloud let out a broken giggle, panic rapidly consuming what was once a crystal-clear mind. "Or d-did I do something wrong? A-are you mad at me?"

He shattered something. He shattered something. He shattered something.

Red Fog, seemingly zoned out, snapped back to reality. Dusting himself off, he rose from the dirt, holstering the Madou and abruptly taking off. All that was left as a reminder of his presence - the swift red streak across the sky.

Their secret sparring ground was found out a few days later - and they were both punished severely for their recklessness in playing with their lives. However, as terrifying as his father's righteous wrath was - there was something infinitely more terrifying to the youthful Cloud, a shadow that now haunted his thoughts every passing day.

Brother did not want to spar with him anymore.

Not even with wooden swords.

Alright sooo, i did a little redesign work or did alittle touch ups on each symbols of each divine god for Misteria about a few weeks ago...

i double checked at least a few times to be extra sure the symbols of each god at least looked like SOMETHING and so i came up with this!

kul'zak's is a tree (to represent him being the god of destruction and karma)

menphia's is a firey bolt (to represent her being the god of war and hope)

shad's looks like a torn apart heart (to represent him being the god of death and reanimation)

esmund's is a shield (to represent him being the god of protection and judgement)

enki's is shears (to represent him being the god of time and the space)

and

irenes is a sort of plant like it always has been, basically unchanged honestly (but its to represent her being the god of life)
