Well the court has ruled in the case regarding it is GM that the court can do that the records can be unsealed. This is in the case involving VRG! There has been a reuptick in the cases of COVID-19 in various places around the world where the case that had kind of stabilized. We are seeing that in Canada as well in several provinces. In our country, it’s due to people gathering in large gatherings and then having what they call a super spreader. Then they return home and it spreads throughout their community. So as far as returning to school I think in many parts of the world that’s still up in the air. I’m thinking especially regarding our Cambridge children, they probably still do not know what they’re going to do. It is likely going to probably come down to digital education and a continuation of more of the same as had been done earlier in the year. As we, in the northern hemisphere are heading to autumn and the flu season when begins, this is very concerning. There was a open broad daylight shooting at a funeral home where I believe 15 people were shot and it was a gang members funeral and I was I guess other gang members that did the shooting. Apparently there are 117,000 gang members in that part of Chicago where the entire population of the community is 500,000 so you’re looking at more than 20% does astounding!! These mayors/governors are of the opposing party of the current U.S. government and are actively, as in the case of Minneapolis, have instituted laws ready to defund the police. I want to specifically talk about Portland, Oregon. Tonight I believe it was the 54th night of riots and destruction and the local law-enforcement are held back they’re not allowed to do anything. They have specifically received instructions from their mayor and governor. Imagine being those fine dedicated to serve and protect officers being handcuffed, so to speak, from doing their job. The Daily Mail has this amazing story today. I know people who don’t move stuff about. I used to always move my furniture around and decorate each season. Now the furniture moving….not so much🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 due to my back. But l love moving my special things AND decorating each season! There is a house stuck in time. An ex-Royal Navy sailor, 89, has left decor untouched since 1948 saying it’s saved him thousands. Doug Bethel, 89, from Liverpool, Merseyside, still lives in the house that his family first purchased in 1948. Following military service he was a gas engineer, now retired obviously, although men do still have a lot of “ gas” 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂especially around that age. Pardon my humour😂😂🤣😂☺️🤣🤣☺️. He has left his house untouched, when he returned to live with parents after leaving Royal Navy.Mr Bethel has kept his childhood bedroom untouched and still has the original kitchen and cooker in house. Since it was built, house has survived two explosions- one during the Second World War and another in 1986. This goes to show you how things are quality that were built back then last and stand the test of time. Now if you buy an appliance they’re made to be disposable they don’t last that long and it’s cheaper to buy a new one then to fix it. I would love to walk through this house and have him explain everything. That used to be my type of favourite patient to work with, the special patient who was seasoned as I should say , elderly , but I prefer the word seasoned and had lots of life stories and life lessons to tell. The pictures are amazing! The outside of the house looks a little rough but the inside is glorious! The floral wallpaper on the walls, my goodness it’s beautiful. He’s done an excellent job of taking care of everything it at all looks just spic and span.. Well that’s a phrase I haven’t used in a long time, spic and span. That’s what my mum used to always say when we cleaned the house and it was all done and she said yes things look spic and span. Does anyone else remember that phrase? I don’t know why that came out of my mouth today but it’s interesting how things stay in our brain and then they come out. I’m noticing that as I use this audio software and I’m just talking instead of typing, it’s a whole different type of experience. I find it so incredibly sad. I spoke about it yesterday, to watch a man publicly mentally implode. Bipolar disorder, a full-blown manic phase, millions of dollars at his fingertips right in front of the public, it just breaks my heart it absolutely it’s just breaks my heart. I have not affinity for the Kardashians or Kanye West don’t get me wrong, I’m not , I’m no fan but I am a human being with compassion. I worked in mental health and it’s just it’s just breaks my heart to watch this happen. Then when he went on to talk about how him and Kim wanted to or she wanted to abort their first baby, North.can you imagine now that’s out in the public and when they were little girl gets older she’s going to read that oh my so so damaging. Other than celebrities always naming their babies weird names you can see his illness evident in the names of their children as well. Kim has remained silent but she released a statement two days ago saying how heartbreaking it is that the family can do nothing to help him do it to the mental health laws there. Also the two of them have been considering divorce for quite some time. Yeah I having a chronic mental illness that has the phases that is dramatic and drastic as he is that doesn’t fit into the reality show a life of a perfect family does it? Let’s get rid of him .In my province, the family can go to the magistrate and get someone formed, it is a form that it’s a short word for the form that’s that’s filled out by the magistrate to compel the person to see a GP or ER , by police or RCMP escort if need be, and often is! They can compel them to see a doctor. Then if the doctor feels they need mental health assistance they can fill out a different form, transferred to Psychiatry and then they will be held against their will for 72 hours for assessment and after such a time as if it’s determined that the person is really in need of hospitalization then there is another form that the psychiatrists, two of them have to fill out and then they start treatment. The 72 hours is for assessment, therefore minimal meds given to allow a clear assessment. However in most cases the person by the time they reach the involuntarily assessment phase they are so ill that they cannot go 72 hours without treatment. They are either violence or acutely suicidal or both and there are various treatment modalities that are used.There’s also a review board process in this within 21 days they can apply to the review were to have the review board if you review the case to determine if it’s appropriately involuntarily hospitalized. The review were consists of psychiatrists nurses legal people and members of the community.

I think that’s a good thing because of this is going to be the new normal we’re going to have to be wearing them and you might as well have something not only be utilitarian but look nice as well right? In the U.K. fast food chains including McDonald’s, Burger King and Domino’s have confirmed they will enforce the new face mask rules.From July 24, you must wear face masks in all shops, public places, restaurants etc.and you could be fined £100 if you fail to do so. The government has also issues guidance guidelines for restaurants and fast food places, which l guess are not considered restaurants 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂. Dine-in and takeaway customers must follow different rules when inside a food establishment.If you’re buying food and drink to takeaway, you are required to wear a face covering.The government says this is the same as entering and browsing a normal shop, where it’s also compulsory to wear face masks.But if you plan on eating in, you won’t need to wear a face covering.Ministers have previously said “it’s not practical” to wear face masks in places where you’ll be eating. He is taking one lane of the already busy lanes of traffic in London and oh I don’t know how many miles I think 10 or 15 miles have already been done and I think there’s another equal amount being planned and they’ve been designated as bicycle lanes because he has this grand idea that people will cycle to work or cycle to downtown London and that way they can avoid using public transportation and less than their risk of coronavirus and basically that will drive the taxi drivers out of business and lessen the ability for disabled people to take the taxi because there are less places where they can pick up and drop off people because they cannot drive in those designated lanes. It’s really upset a lot of people. And in that with the obesity is that the stats are saying people with obesity and have a higher risk of dying from coal coronavirus. And the the p.m. forests and not evening Boris the Prime Minister Boris Johnson although he is in the evening as well I mean let’s face it that he lives both in the day and the night time as opposed to me, who seem to be sleeping during the day and a vampire oh. Hi. Do share with your fans about your background before everyone came to know you as a Bollywood Diva?

Urvashi- I had been always crazy about modelling and movies since school days. At the age of 15, I got my first major break at Wills lifestyle India Fashion Week featuring top designers and models. I started participating in beauty pageants too.

I also won the title of Miss Teen India 2009. I think Pallab, you were the Anchor and Trainer of this pageant then, I remember (smiles!)

As a teen model, I started doing runway fashion shows regularly all over India, I was the show stopper for Lakme Fashion Week and also walked the ramp at Amazon Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Week, Bombay Fashion Week etc;.

In 2011, I won Indian Princess 2011, Miss Tourism World 2011, and Miss Asian Supermodel 2011. I also won the title of Miss Tourism Queen Of The Year 2011 that was held in China with participants from 102 countries and became the first Indian woman to win the pageant. In 2012, I won the coveted crown of I AM She — Miss Universe India as well as the special award for Miss Photogenic. However, I had to leave the ‘I AM She’ crown as I was underage at that time.

In 2015, I joined the Indian pageantry again and reclaimed the same title. Thus I became the first and only woman in history to win the Miss Universe India crown twice (giggles). Additionally, I also won the title of Miss Beautiful Smile at the Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva-Miss Universe India 2015. Finally the big moment came when I represented India in the Miss Universe 2015. So from Beauty pageants to Modeling… and then Bollywood movies.(smiles)

Q. Do tell us about your association with the Film industry so far?

Urvashi- I was fortunate to make my debut as the female lead opposite Sunny Deol. After Singh Saab The Great, I appeared in Yo Yo Honey Singh’s international video album Love Dose. Soon after, I joined the South film industry and made my Kannada debut with Mr. Airavata. Then I did two films, Sanam Re and Great Grand Masti as well as two music videos in 2016. The first was Laal Dupatta with Mika Singh and Anupama Raag and the other was Gal Bann Gayi along with Vidyut Jammwal.

Then I featured in a special dance number Haseeno Ka Deewana in Kaabil. Then finally my biggest hit came in 2018, in the revenge drama Hate Story 4. My latest being Anees Bazmee’s comedy film Pagalpanti.

Q. Who is your dream Director whom you would like to work with?

Urvashi- Sanjay Leela Bhansali anyday…He showcases his actresses beautifully.

Urvashi- Just be humble, and being myself. Yeah, just being myself…no matter what they say.

Q. Tell us about your acting process, How do you prepare for a role in general?

Urvashi- One has to work hard, on your role, the script and understanding what the Director wants. I normally do one film at a time, so that i can concentrate and do justice to my role.

Your biggest inspiration?

Urvashi- My mom for sure. She has always been my strength right from the word Go. Whatever I could achieve so far, has been due to her constant support. Thanks Mom.

Urvashi- My films (giggles) Honestly speaking, I like all kind of films.

Intially I said No. But when I saw him following us, and insisting for his dream come true. I obliged. He said he will never wash that part of his cheek for years. Gosh !

Each year, gruel fanatics from around the world compete for the Golden Spurtle trophy in the small village of Carrbridge, Scotland

In 2015, Lisa Williams was vacationing in Scotland when she stumbled across a glitzy bagpipe procession and a line of people in aprons holding flags from countries around the world. She took a closer look, inquired around, and discovered it was a porridge parade, celebrating the contestants of a world porridge championship.

“And then you go into the village hall [where the competition is held], and it’s decorated in tartan and heather and with all the flags from all the people and their countries,” she says. “It was amazing. I was hooked. I just said to my husband that I want to take part in this. I want to do it.” Four years later, Williams returned to Scotland, and her porridge was crowned the best in the world. “When they called my name out, I was absolutely stunned,” she says.

Like Goldilocks chasing down that perfect bowl, Williams is among a dedicated class of professional and amateur cooks around the world who compete each year to serve the best bowl of, essentially, gruel. They gather in the small village of Carrbridge, Scotland, on the edge of a national park in the Scottish highlands, for the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship. Judges for the competition, which is split into “traditional” and “specialty” categories, are mostly recruited from the culinary industry, and rank each bowl by color, texture, hygiene, and taste. The “golden spurtle” refers to both the traditional Scottish utensil specifically designed for porridge-stirring, as well as the shape of the trophy awarded to winners.

What began as a tourism initiative in 1994 to attract winter crowds to the quaint, 700-person Scottish town has grown into an institution, drawing in hundreds of spectators and up to 30 competitors each year. “I read about it in the newspaper and thought that if this isn’t a joke and it’s for real, it’s the most silly and insane thing I ever heard,” says Saga Rickmer of Sweden. She signed up immediately, and went on to compete in the 2016 world championships and ultimately win the Swedish Porridge Competition, a national spinoff competition, in 2019.

This year, due to COVID-19, the competition will move online, with competitors submitting short video recipes and winners announced over social media on October 10 — World Porridge Day. But while the thrill of softening stodgy grains in real time might be missing, the weight of the endeavor seems to resonate more than ever. Anyone who has been cooking and recooking the same simple meals from pantry staples during the pandemic will understand the quest for the platonic ideal of gruel.

The 2020 competition will also be slightly different in that it will focus entirely on the specialty category, where pretty much anything goes. Competitors can add a bunch of milk, shape the oatmeal into tapas, brulee it, steam it, or bake it. Per Carlsson of Sweden snagged the 2017 specialty win with a cloudberry-liqueur porridge brulee. Neal Robertson from Scotland won in 2011 with a cinnamon and nutmeg-spiked porridge topped with a blueberry compote. Other wins have included a mushroom porridge torta in 2012 and a sticky toffee porridge in 2014.

Nick Barnard of London, a two-time winner in the specialty category, says the key to dressing up an award-winning dish is knowing what the judges like. “The Scots love sugar, salt, and fat,” he says. “So I’ll give it to them in spades.” Barnard won in 2019 with his maple pecan porridge, a mix of pecan butter, maple syrup, dry milk powder, and cream, all topped with pecans sauteed in ghee.

This year’s competition won’t include the traditional category, but normally competitors in this genre are required to make porridge with just three elements: oats, water, and salt. Minimally processed oats are a prerequisite; precooked oats like instant and rolled oats are not allowed. Almost everyone who has won has used steel-cut oats and soaked the porridge overnight.

While it may seem simple by comparison, the challenge — and honestly, the fun — of the endeavor lies in elevating what’s widely recognized as an archetype of culinary austerity into something worth awarding a large spoon-shaped trophy to. Many home cooks believe all oatmeal tastes mostly the same, but it’s a point of pride for a porridge connoisseur to rise above this stereotype to make a truly distinguished bowl of oats.

“Many older people have grown up with this traditional, gloopy porridge and have a distaste for it,” says Carlsson, who also won the traditional category in 2018. “But I usually give them a sample of my porridge to try, and they say, ‘This isn’t porridge. This is something else!’” At his bed and breakfast in southern Sweden, Carlsson used to rotate porridge duties with two friends, and guests always complimented their meals on days when he cooked. Now Carlsson is behind the stove nearly every morning. A small corner of the dining room is also demurely decorated with porridge paraphernalia: a spurtle, a ladle, Swedish porridge merch and slogans, plus Carlsson’s own book of recipes.

Fans generally believe that the ideal oat porridge should be thick enough to offer some resistance, but smooth enough to go down easily. There should definitely be salt, but not enough to make you reach for a glass of water. It should be thick enough, but not at all watery. Not too much, and not too little. Not too cold, not too hot — just as Goldilocks would have it.

“It’s fascinating. In a competition, porridge is cooked 24 different ways, and they all taste different,” says Robertson, who has competed for a decade and occasionally judges at the Swedish Porridge Championship.

Competitors cook porridge every day for months, even years, to drill down the minutiae of the stuff. “You start preparing pretty much the day of the competition for the next year,” says Williams. Carlsson even recruited outside help from Dr. Viola Adamsson, a medical doctor and food nutritionist who has written several books on porridge and made porridge for the Swedish Olympic ski team in 1998 and 2002. “She practically has a doctorate in porridge,” jokes Carlsson’s wife, Catarina Arvidsson. Carlsson and Adamsson trained via Skype and telephone several times a week for a month, perfecting the water-to-oat ratio.

Among niche porridge circles, conversation often lands on four critical elements: oat-to-water ratio, type of oats, and salt. “One part oats to three parts water,” Williams insists. “Soak the oats overnight and use more salt than you think you would. I use Maldon sea salt — the same salt the queen uses.” Williams prefers half steel-cut oats and half stone-ground milled oats from Hamlyns of Scotland. “You get a nutty texture, but it’s not completely nutty. It’s more of a smooth nutty,” she says.

Robertson agrees on steel-cut oats from Hamlyns, but he does one part oatmeal to 2.5 parts water. “I tend to use sea salt,” he says. “It’s a bit softer and a bit more forgiving. And you should always stir it anti-clockwise. It keeps the devil at the bay.”

Carlsson does one part oats and 4.5 parts water. “I cook it for at least 25 minutes, then it is allowed to swell,” he says. Unlike Williams and Robertson, Carlson uses Swedish steel-cut oats from Saltå Kvarn, which are creamy but toasted for a “nice burned flavor,” he says.

In opting for Swedish oats, Carlson throws down the gauntlet in a nationalist sub-debate among porridge cooks. “Countries mill their oats in different ways,” says Anna Louise Batchelor, who won the specialty title in 2009. “Bob’s Red Mill [in America], they sell a really lovely rolled oat that’s very coarse. It’s very shiny and flat and it takes a long time to cook. Scotland loves their salty oats. And in Sweden, their milling is quite rustic.” Batchelor prefers coarse oats from English brand Mornflake.

Even the namesake spurtle is a topic of debate. Unlike spoons, spurtles allegedly don’t drag and prevent lumps. Many swear by them. “If you want to whip porridge in a pan without getting it all over yourself, the spurtle is the best tool,” says Barnard. “It brings air and stops it from overheating at the bottom of the pan and distributes the salt.” In 2016, Bob Moore, the founder of Bob’s Red Mill, won using a handcrafted myrtle spurtle from Oregon, where he lives.

Charlie Miller, the current organizer of the competition, says more eccentric attendees often bring specialty equipment too. Pressure cookers, microwaves, and bain-maries are commonly spotted in the competition hall. “Neal Robertson one year brought water that he claimed came from a stream that fed his local whisky distillery,” Miller recalls. In 2018, competitor Lynn Munro brought oatmeal she milled herself and cooked it with water she harvested from the loch at her childhood home. One woman even grew her own oats for the competition.

“Some people are so serious, it’s quite charming,” Barnard says. “The Swedish dress up like Swedish milkmaids and make a lot of noise. Some people have spreadsheets. It’s a circus, really.” But competitors are accepted into the fold regardless of skill. “I met one man at the competition who had never prepared a bowl of porridge in his life,” Miller says, laughing.

Robertson commemorated his 2010 win with a tattoo reading “World Porridge Champion 10.10.10,” rousing envy among friends and competitors. “Neal Robertson had [a tattoo] and walked around showing it off. Then I thought I should get one as well,” Carlsson says. Shortly after his own win, Carlsson shocked his children by getting his forearm inked with the words “World Champion” spiraling around a ladle.

But beneath the braggadocio and heated competition, the Golden Spurtle is, at its heart, about a bunch of people hanging out in a room cooking oatmeal. “It’s just the best time,” says Rickmer, who often visits her fellow Swede, Carlsson, as a guest chef at his bed and breakfast. “Competing in porridge is so cozy and cute. Everyone is so nerdy, which I love.”

Even this year, as competitors dive deep into their individual porridge pots, in their own kitchens, in their own countries thousands of miles apart, they are bound by a shared appreciation of well-cooked grains and what they symbolize. “It’s an ancestral food,” says Barnard. “All cultures around the world have a type of gruel.”

As with any competition, there are plenty of tears and laughter. “When I won, I was absolutely stunned. My face was bright red and I almost burst into tears,” Williams says, beaming as she holds up her trophy. She says she plans on going back to Scotland as soon as the competition is held in-person again, this time to add a specialty category win to her victory in the traditional category. “I have my china all picked out already.”

Many swear by them. “If you want to whip porridge in a pan without getting it all over yourself, the spurtle is the best tool,” says Barnard. “It brings air and stops it from overheating at the bottom of the pan and distributes the salt.” In 2016, Bob Moore, the founder of Bob’s Red Mill, won using a handcrafted myrtle spurtle from Oregon, where he lives.

Charlie Miller, the current organizer of the competition, says more eccentric attendees often bring specialty equipment too. Pressure cookers, microwaves, and bain-maries are commonly spotted in the competition hall. “Neal Robertson one year brought water that he claimed came from a stream that fed his local whisky distillery,” Miller recalls. In 2018, competitor Lynn Munro brought oatmeal she milled herself and cooked it with water she harvested from the loch at her childhood home. One woman even grew her own oats for the competition.

“Some people are so serious, it’s quite charming,” Barnard says. “The Swedish dress up like Swedish milkmaids and make a lot of noise. Some people have spreadsheets. It’s a circus, really.” But competitors are accepted into the fold regardless of skill. “I met one man at the competition who had never prepared a bowl of porridge in his life,” Miller says, laughing.

Robertson commemorated his 2010 win with a tattoo reading “World Porridge Champion 10.10.10,” rousing envy among friends and competitors. “Neal Robertson had [a tattoo] and walked around showing it off. Then I thought I should get one as well,” Carlsson says. Shortly after his own win, Carlsson shocked his children by getting his forearm inked with the words “World Champion” spiraling around a ladle.

But beneath the braggadocio and heated competition, the Golden Spurtle is, at its heart, about a bunch of people hanging out in a room cooking oatmeal. “It’s just the best time,” says Rickmer, who often visits her fellow Swede, Carlsson, as a guest chef at his bed and breakfast. “Competing in porridge is so cozy and cute. Everyone is so nerdy, which I love.”

Even this year, as competitors dive deep into their individual porridge pots, in their own kitchens, in their own countries thousands of miles apart, they are bound by a shared appreciation of well-cooked grains and what they symbolize. “It’s an ancestral food,” says Barnard. “All cultures around the world have a type of gruel.”

As with any competition, there are plenty of tears and laughter. “When I won, I was absolutely stunned. My face was bright red and I almost burst into tears,” Williams says, beaming as she holds up her trophy. She says she plans on going back to Scotland as soon as the competition is held in-person again, this time to add a specialty category win to her victory in the traditional category. “I have my china all picked out already.”

Năm thứ hai liên tiếp Việt Nam có đại diện giành chiến thắng tại Miss Global Beauty Queen. Ngọc Duyên, Nữ hoàng Sắc đẹp Toàn cầu 2016, vì lý do sức khỏe không thể tham dự đêm chung kết. Hoa hậu năm 2015 trao vương miện cho Hoàng Thu Thảo.

Ngôi vị Á hậu 1 được trao cho người đẹp Pháp. Á hậu 2, Á hậu 3 và Á hậu 4 lần lượt thuộc về thí sinh Brazil, Australia và Hàn Quốc.

Đại diện Việt Nam được Cục Nghệ thuật biểu diễn cấp phép dự thi vào ngày 12/10.  Hoàng Thu Thảo chọn váy của nhà thiết kế Brian Võ để trình diễn “Trang phục dân tộc”.

Hoàng Thu Thảo sinh năm 1994, là Á hậu Nữ hoàng Trang sức Việt Nam 2015. Cô có gương mặt thuần Việt với chiều cao 1,72 m, số đo 87-60-92 cm. Sau cuộc thi, cô hoạt động trong lĩnh vực người mẫu. Hoàng Thu Thảo từng tham dự Hoa hậu châu Á Thái Bình Dương - Miss Asia Pacific International 2016 tại Philippines và vào top 6 gương mặt tài năng.

Cô cũng vào top 10 Nữ hoàng Du lịch Quốc tế - Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International 2016 diễn ra tại Trung Quốc. Trong cuộc thi này, Thu Thảo chiến thắng giải thưởng "Trang phục dân tộc đẹp nhất".

In Odessa, Ukraine’s graceful Black Sea resort, every local fashion agency and beauty contest organizer knows Listerman, a man always looking to hire Russian and Ukrainian models for his VIP escort agencies. And to 24-year-old Goncharova, Listerman’s name brings a whole storm of associations with dubious big-money characters treating teenage girls as if they were animals at a pet store. Even back in 2016, sources familiar with the beauty business were not surprised to see a report on the New York Post’s gossipy Page Six site connecting Listerman to Jeffrey Epstein: “Instead of having his assistants troll local high schools, the billionaire money manager—and registered sex offender—is importing his playmates from Russia.” The article suggested Listerman had been seen visiting Epstein’s apartment and noted a TV interview in which Listerman said he introduced many oligarchs to Russian models, but insisted: “I’m not a pimp, just [a] matchmaker.”Now Epstein is held in a federal lockup in Manhattan, facing up to 45 years in prison for molesting and trafficking minors. And Listerman appeared to be running scared as soon as we started asking questions.Jeffrey Epstein Arrested for Sex Trafficking of MinorsEarlier this month, celebrities arrived here from all over the world for the 10th annual Odesa International Film Festival. Young Ukrainian models took part in the Fashion Weekend events, with photo shoots on the beach. And sure enough, Listerman showed up as well. (He was easy to track: he kept posting bawdy videos of himself at the Del Mar or the Dacha restaurant talking about... sex.) When asked about his dealings with Epstein, Listerman tried to turn his activities into a joke:  “I invented myths and fairy tales to entertain people,” Listerman told The Daily Beast. But when pressed to explain the details about the alleged traffic of teen models, he declined to answer and subsequently blocked a reporter on his Instagram and Facebook pages.   What’s certain is that Listerman’s pursuit of potential “matchmaking” talent is notorious, and for decades the activities of Listerman, a Russian citizen, were an open book. He often bragged about his business on Russian TV, referring to the women he hooked up with rich men as “chickens” or “tyolki,” which means heifers, young cows that have never been bred. A porridge creation by Swedish competitor Per Carlsson | Clarissa Wei Each year, gruel fanatics from around the world compete for the Golden Spurtle trophy in the small village of Carrbridge, Scotland In 2015, Lisa Williams was vacationing in Scotland when she stumbled across a glitzy bagpipe procession and a line of people in aprons holding flags from countries around the world. She took a closer look, inquired around, and discovered it was a porridge parade, celebrating the contestants of a world porridge championship. “And then you go into the village hall [where the competition is held], and it’s decorated in tartan and heather and with all the flags from all the people and their countries,” she says. “It was amazing. I was hooked. I just said to my husband that I want to take part in this. I want to do it.” Four years later, Williams returned to Scotland, and her porridge was crowned the best in the world. “When they called my name out, I was absolutely stunned,” she says. Like Goldilocks chasing down that perfect bowl, Williams is among a dedicated class of professional and amateur cooks around the world who compete each year to serve the best bowl of, essentially, gruel. They gather in the small village of Carrbridge, Scotland, on the edge of a national park in the Scottish highlands, for the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship. Judges for the competition, which is split into “traditional” and “specialty” categories, are mostly recruited from the culinary industry, and rank each bowl by color, texture, hygiene, and taste. The “golden spurtle” refers to both the traditional Scottish utensil specifically designed for porridge-stirring, as well as the shape of the trophy awarded to winners. She signed up immediately, and went on to compete in the 2016 world championships and ultimately win the Swedish Porridge Competition, a national spinoff competition, in 2019. This year, due to COVID-19, the competition will move online, with competitors submitting short video recipes and winners announced over social media on October 10 — World Porridge Day. But while the thrill of softening stodgy grains in real time might be missing, the weight of the endeavor seems to resonate more than ever. Anyone who has been cooking and recooking the same simple meals from pantry staples during the pandemic will understand the quest for the platonic ideal of gruel. The 2020 competition will also be slightly different in that it will focus entirely on the specialty category, where pretty much anything goes. Competitors can add a bunch of milk, shape the oatmeal into tapas, brulee it, steam it, or bake it. Per Carlsson of Sweden snagged the 2017 specialty win with a cloudberry-liqueur porridge brulee. Neal Robertson from Scotland won in 2011 with a cinnamon and nutmeg-spiked porridge topped with a blueberry compote. Other wins have included a mushroom porridge torta in 2012 and a sticky toffee porridge in 2014. Nick Barnard of London, a two-time winner in the specialty category, says the key to dressing up an award-winning dish is knowing what the judges like. “The Scots love sugar, salt, and fat,” he says. “So I’ll give it to them in spades.” Barnard won in 2019 with his maple pecan porridge, a mix of pecan butter, maple syrup, dry milk powder, and cream, all topped with pecans sauteed in ghee. Minimally processed oats are a prerequisite; precooked oats like instant and rolled oats are not allowed. Almost everyone who has won has used steel-cut oats and soaked the porridge overnight. While it may seem simple by comparison, the challenge — and honestly, the fun — of the endeavor lies in elevating what’s widely recognized as an archetype of culinary austerity into something worth awarding a large spoon-shaped trophy to. Many home cooks believe all oatmeal tastes mostly the same, but it’s a point of pride for a porridge connoisseur to rise above this stereotype to make a truly distinguished bowl of oats. “Many older people have grown up with this traditional, gloopy porridge and have a distaste for it,” says Carlsson, who also won the traditional category in 2018. “But I usually give them a sample of my porridge to try, and they say, ‘This isn’t porridge. This is something else!’” At his bed and breakfast in southern Sweden, Carlsson used to rotate porridge duties with two friends, and guests always complimented their meals on days when he cooked. Now Carlsson is behind the stove nearly every morning. A small corner of the dining room is also demurely decorated with porridge paraphernalia: a spurtle, a ladle, Swedish porridge merch and slogans, plus Carlsson’s own book of recipes. Fans generally believe that the ideal oat porridge should be thick enough to offer some resistance, but smooth enough to go down easily. There should definitely be salt, but not enough to make you reach for a glass of water. It should be thick enough, but not at all watery. Not too much, and not too little. Not too cold, not too hot — just as Goldilocks would have it. “It’s fascinating. Carlsson even recruited outside help from Dr. Viola Adamsson, a medical doctor and food nutritionist who has written several books on porridge and made porridge for the Swedish Olympic ski team in 1998 and 2002. “She practically has a doctorate in porridge,” jokes Carlsson’s wife, Catarina Arvidsson. Carlsson and Adamsson trained via Skype and telephone several times a week for a month, perfecting the water-to-oat ratio. Among niche porridge circles, conversation often lands on four critical elements: oat-to-water ratio, type of oats, and salt. “One part oats to three parts water,” Williams insists. “Soak the oats overnight and use more salt than you think you would. I use Maldon sea salt — the same salt the queen uses.” Williams prefers half steel-cut oats and half stone-ground milled oats from Hamlyns of Scotland. “You get a nutty texture, but it’s not completely nutty. It’s more of a smooth nutty,” she says. Robertson agrees on steel-cut oats from Hamlyns, but he does one part oatmeal to 2.5 parts water. “I tend to use sea salt,” he says. “It’s a bit softer and a bit more forgiving. And you should always stir it anti-clockwise. It keeps the devil at the bay.” Carlsson does one part oats and 4.5 parts water. “I cook it for at least 25 minutes, then it is allowed to swell,” he says. Unlike Williams and Robertson, Carlson uses Swedish steel-cut oats from Saltå Kvarn, which are creamy but toasted for a “nice burned flavor,” he says. In opting for Swedish oats, Carlson throws down the gauntlet in a nationalist sub-debate among porridge cooks. “Countries mill their oats in different ways,” says Anna Louise Batchelor, who won the specialty title in 2009. “Bob’s Red Mill [in America], they sell a really lovely rolled oat that’s very coarse. It’s very shiny and flat and it takes a long time to cook. Scotland loves their salty oats. And in Sweden, their milling is quite rustic.” Batchelor prefers coarse oats from English brand Mornflake. Even the namesake spurtle is a topic of debate. Unlike spoons, spurtles allegedly don’t drag and prevent lumps. Many swear by them. “If you want to whip porridge in a pan without getting it all over yourself, the spurtle is the best tool,” says Barnard. “It brings air and stops it from overheating at the bottom of the pan and distributes the salt.” In 2016, Bob Moore, the founder of Bob’s Red Mill, won using a handcrafted myrtle spurtle from Oregon, where he lives. Charlie Miller, the current organizer of the competition, says more eccentric attendees often bring specialty equipment too. Pressure cookers, microwaves, and bain-maries are commonly spotted in the competition hall. “Neal Robertson one year brought water that he claimed came from a stream that fed his local whisky distillery,” Miller recalls. In 2018, competitor Lynn Munro brought oatmeal she milled herself and cooked it with water she harvested from the loch at her childhood home. One woman even grew her own oats for the competition. “Some people are so serious, it’s quite charming,” Barnard says. “The Swedish dress up like Swedish milkmaids and make a lot of noise. Some people have spreadsheets. It’s a circus, really.” But competitors are accepted into the fold regardless of skill. “I met one man at the competition who had never prepared a bowl of porridge in his life,” Miller says, laughing. Robertson commemorated his 2010 win with a tattoo reading “World Porridge Champion 10.10.10,” rousing envy among friends and competitors. “Neal Robertson had [a tattoo] and walked around showing it off. Then I thought I should get one as well,” Carlsson says. Shortly after his own win, Carlsson shocked his children by getting his forearm inked with the words “World Champion” spiraling around a ladle. But beneath the braggadocio and heated competition, the Golden Spurtle is, at its heart, about a bunch of people hanging out in a room cooking oatmeal. “It’s just the best time,” says Rickmer, who often visits her fellow Swede, Carlsson, as a guest chef at his bed and breakfast. “Competing in porridge is so cozy and cute. Everyone is so nerdy, which I love.” Even this year, as competitors dive deep into their individual porridge pots, in their own kitchens, in their own countries thousands of miles apart, they are bound by a shared appreciation of well-cooked grains and what they symbolize. “It’s an ancestral food,” says Barnard. “All cultures around the world have a type of gruel.” As with any competition, there are plenty of tears and laughter. “When I won, I was absolutely stunned. My face was bright red and I almost burst into tears,” Williams says, beaming as she holds up her trophy. Delegates advocate for environmental awareness and protection of the Earth while showcasing various tourist destinations. Miss Earth is known as one of the most relevant pageants and the second largest, drawing nearly 100 national representatives each year to compete for the title. As 2016 Miss Earth, Ecuador's Katherine Espin serves as a global ambassador to organizations including the United Nations Environment Programme and Philippines eco-tourism. 

State delegates were selected based on leadership skills, photographs, interview, and pageant or modeling experience. They represent their state or region throughout the year, appearing in the community as well as fashion and media events.

National activities include park clean up on the National Mall, tour of the US Capitol Building, runway and modeling workshop, photo shoot with Southern Exposure Photography, and charity gala. Competitions open to the public including speaking, Mac Duggal runway competition, swimwear, and personal evening gown. The delegates are also evaluated on judge interview, multimedia, photogenic and community video. Final wardrobe is sponsored by Pixton Design Group, Jegie Brand, Marc DeFang and Elementz by Prerna.

“People do not realize the extensive work that goes into preparing for a pageant of this caliber,” says National Director Laura Clark. “We consider the national experience to be a showcase and celebration of these delegates. The winner of Miss Earth United States will spend the next two months touring the USA including visits to New York City, Miami, San Juan, and Chicago. This fall, she will represent the nation at the 17th annual Miss Earth competition, with the final coronation televised globally to millions of viewers. She will hold the title for one year, and if named Miss Earth, will travel extensively worldwide throughout her reign. The USA has ranked in the Top 4 at Miss Earth for the past three consecutive years. In addition to one national winner, a Top 4 will be named on August 5 and receive a prize package.

SUGAR CONCERN –This year’s sugar crop is expected to surpass last year’s yield, but the same might not be true of 2018 unless farmers get some rain soon. Chairman of the Barbados Agricultural Management Corporation (BAMC), Dr Atlee Brathwaite, said a lack of rain, more so than fires, would impact next year’s sugar season. At the start of the year, those in the industry had projected that this year’s crop would yield 12 000 tonnes of sugar from 126 909 tonnes of cane, up from 2016’s 7 000 tonnes of sugar from a disappointing 85 000 tonnes of cane. Brathwaite, who admitted he did not have the figures to hand over the long Easter weekend, said indications, however, were that yields would surpass last year’s output. (DN)

BARBADOS SLIPS IN TOURISM RANKING – Barbados has lost some of its travel and tourism competitiveness. However, it remains the highest ranked destination in the English-speaking Caribbean. That’s based on the 2017 edition of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) The Travel Tourism Competitiveness Report. In the report’s last edition – 2015 – the island had been ranked 46 out of 141 countries. This time, however, it slipped to 58 out of 136 locations, with its overall competitiveness score reduced from 4.1 to 3.9 per cent. The global ranking was topped by Spain for the second time, followed by France, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Italy, Canada and Switzerland. (DN)

ONLINE BUZZ – More Barbadians are turning to the Internet to beat the high cost of shopping in Barbados. And assorted duties and taxes are not deterring them. This has been revealed by managing director of Cargo Solutions International Barbados, Kevyn Yearwood, who said he had seen his customer base expand in the past few months. One reason for the growth was a recent promotion which offered a customer the chance to win a Caribbean cruise for two. The company styles itself as one which represents freight forwarders and wholesale suppliers located in the major United States shopping hubs like Miami and New York. (DN)

BAJANS EAT OUT FOR EASTER – Many Barbadians spent their Easter Sunday wining and dining at hotels and restaurants. The Radisson Aquatica Resort in Aquatic Gap, St Michael, was packed to capacity. General manager Gerry Lewis told the DAILY NATION the hotel was once again focusing on making the Easter Sunday lunch a family affair. As patrons got their selection of food from the well-stocked buffet, Lewis said this year the resort introduced an Easter egg hunt with the Easter bunny, face painting and an Easter bonnet parade for the children. At Savannah Hotel in Hastings, Christ Church, general manager Tricia Greaves said their Easter buffet was extended to add more seasonal delicacies. Going through the list of foods on offer, she said different flavours had been incorporated into the menu and to top it off, there was entertainment from Mylon Clarke and The Project. The turnout for lunch had been good from both locals and guests at the hotel, she said. Further along the South Coast at Accra Beach Hotel, executive chef Abunasar Siddiquiwas also in highspirits as he said thehotel did something special with the menu in combining Caribbean, Mediterranean and European flavours. Siddiqui added that Accra’s Easter Sunday lunch had drawn a good response from both international and local patrons who told him this year’s event was even better than 2016’s. (BT)

THE COLOURS OF EASTER – Easter was on show yesterday as the Oistins Fish Festival continued. Students from St Christopher’s Primary wore their Sunday finest as they paraded on stage at Oistins Bay Garden. Teacher and organiser Tamara Moseley told the DAILY NATION that the Christ Church primary school had hosted its own Easter bonnet parade during the last week last term. She said the 25 participants represented about double the number of those in the 2016 parade. She added there were six categories this year, including the Festivals Of Barbados, Traditional Bajan Easter and Real Sportsmanship. Moseley said a few of the children were given the opportunity to parade in their colourful outfits. She made special mention of the Three Dollar Store in Oistins for helping with the parade. (DN)

POLICE STILL PROBING CRIMES – Lawmen are on the hunt for perpetrators of unsolved crimes committed in recent weeks. Police public relations officer, Acting Inspector Roland Cobbler, said the force was still investigating the stabbing of sno-cone vendor Shamar Maynard on Sunday, April 9. Maynard was on Browne’s Beach plying his trade when he was approached by a group of men and a verbal altercation ensued. According to police, the men subsequently attacked him. He received a stab wound to the upper back and a cut to the hand. He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was treated and discharged. Investigations are also continuing into the death of a four-month-old baby who, according to police reports, was mistakenly left at home by the parents during the morning of April 3.  (DN)

FIRE OF DEATH –Valiant efforts by one man failed to save the life of a 56-year-old epileptic but may have helped to prevent further disaster in a St Michael neighbourhood yesterday morning. Cedric McCarthy died when flames engulfed his wood and wall house at Clarkes Road, Free Hill, Black Rock. That fire also razed another wood and wall house and damaged two others. It was neighbour Omar Goodman who leapt out of his bed and rushed to the McCarthy home. He said he was alerted to the flames and smoke around 9:30 a.m. and initially thought it was another house that was ablaze. (DN)

MAIN KEEPS BURSTING – Veneta Caddle wants to know why a water main opposite her home is constantly rupturing. Caddle, who lives in The Risk, St Lucy, said the main had burst several times over the past three years and on each occasion, it was difficult for her to get in or out of her house without being sprayed by water. Added to this, the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) usually took several days to repair the main. The latest incident happened this past week and for Caddle that was enough, and that was why she contacted the DAILY NATION. (DN)

HEAT AT THE GARRISON TODAY – The temperature at the Garrison Savannah today will be blistering hot when double Gold Cup winner Dorsett, Marcus Antonius and Sirius Black clash. Be warned. It will be sweltering in the racefor the 67th running of the grade I – 1 570 metres Barbados Guineas, the first jewel of the Barbados Triple Crown. Enthusiasts are in for another breathtaking climax, similar to that of last year when the photo finish camera was called upon to separate Steven Allan and Stolen. This time it should feature hot favourite Fleurette, Oberoi, D’Girlz Dem Sugar and Black Rock. (DN)

GOLD COMES ON THE SECOND DAY – Aaron Worrell and Rasheeme Griffith captured Barbados’ only gold medals so far at the 46th Flow CARIFTA Games at the Ergilio Hato Stadium here Sunday night. At that stage, Barbados had nine medals, two gold, four silver and three bronze. The lion-hearted 19-year-old Worrell covered himself in glory in the grueling eight-event Octathlon, amassing 5461 while Griffith repeated as Under-18 Boys’ 400-metre hurdles champion, clocking 51.64 seconds. Worrell started the day in the lead, but was overtaken by Wikenson Fenelon of Turks and Caicos. However, Worrell produced personal best performances in the last two events – the javelin and 1500 metres. He got an invaluable 458 points when he threw 34.61 metres in the javelin but more importantly finished second in the 1500 with a time of 4:59.58 to collect 562 points, ensuring he edged Fenelon (5460) by a solitary point for the gold. Worrell had earlier clocked 15.03 seconds in the 110-metre hurdles for 846 points and leapt 1.96 metres in the high jump, earning 767 points. Griffith overcame a slow start to claim his second gold medal in consecutive years. Nathan Ferguson, who captured a silver medal last year, came fourth this time in 53.04 seconds, behind Jamaicans Rovane Williams (52.69) and Dashinelle Dyer (53.02). Jonathan Miller also shrugged off nervousness in his maiden CARIFTA, to snatch a silver medal behind Jamaica’s Safin Wills (15.11 metres) in the Under-18 Boys’ triple jump with his best hop, skip and jump, measured at 14.85 metres. Rivaldo Leacock signed off his last CARIFTA with a bronze in the Under-20 Boys’ 400-metre hurdles, clocking 52.44 seconds. There were also no medals for Brome and Akayla Morris in the Under-18 Girls' long jump, which was won by Guyanese Chantoba Bright with a leap of 5.91 metres. Brome was fourth with her best effort of 5.57 coming on her opening jump while Morris finished fifth after leaping 5.52 in her final jump. Newcomer Enrique Babb put the shot 16.08 metres for fifth place among the Under-18 boys in an event where Jamaican Daniel Cope set a new record of 18.17 metres. Trinidad and Tobago’s Tyra Gittens won the Girls’ Heptathlon with 4854 points while Guyana’s Claudrice McKoy (10:39.03 minutes) overtook Jamaican Britnie Dixon (10:44.63) in the last 80 metres to win the Open Girls’ 3000. Jamaicans Renardo Johnson (9:30.61) and Tarees Rhoden (9:30.69) got gold and silver in the Under-18 Boys’ 3000. Trinidadian Tyriq Horsford predictably won the Under-18 Boys’ javelin for a third consecutive year, with a new record distance of 76.50 metres. Perennial champions and runaway leaders Jamaica swept all four 4x100-metre among the Under-18 and Under-20 boys and girls. Barbados only entered a quartet of Griffith, Matthew Clarke, Fergusson and Darian Clarke, on anchor in the Under-18 Boys’ race and finished fourth in 41.34 seconds as Jamaica won in a new record time of 39.97 seconds. Host country Curacao had plenty to celebrate as one of their own Glenn Kunst broke the pole vault record a number of times to grab gold after clearing a height of 4.60 metres. (DN)

CLEVELAND EASTER MURDER - On April 16, 2017, 74-year-old Robert Godwin, Sr. was shot and killed while walking on a sidewalk in Cleveland, Ohio. The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Steve Stephens, who posted video of the shooting on his Facebook account. Stephens is wanted on a warrant for aggravated murder. The shooting happened at around 2 p.m. EDT on April 16, 2017 in the area of 635 East 93rd Street in Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood. The shooter uploaded a video of the event, in which he proclaims "Found me somebody I'm about to kill." before exiting his car and accosting Godwin. He orders Godwin to say <name> - the name of Stephens' ex-girlfriend - then announces "She's the reason this [is] about to happen to you." Stephens then shoots Godwin in the head, returns to his car and drives off as screams are heard in the background. Facebook said the video was uploaded to the website, not livestreamed as initially reported. In other Facebook posts, Stephens claimed responsibility for 13 murders, but police said they were not aware of any other victims. A search for Stephens began soon after the shooting, prompting lockdowns at a number of locations, including Cleveland State University. The manhunt expanded to other states on the morning of April 17. Residents in Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana and Michigan were asked to be on alert. An arrest warrant was issued on a charge of aggravated murder. Stephens worked at Beech Brook, a behavioral health agency for children and families. He was wearing his work ID badge and repeatedly mentioned Beech Brook in videos on the day of the murder.

NORTH KOREA ATTEMPTS TO LAUNCH MISSILE BUT FAILS - North Korea attempted to fire a missile it introduced at a massive military parade – but it was an embarrassing failure when the weapon blew up four or five seconds after being launched. It is thought to be one of the country’s new ‘game-changer’ intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) which was revealed to the world in a display of military might yesterday. The South Korean defence ministry said it had detected a failed launch from Sinpo – where North Korea’s biggest submarine base is located. According to a military official, the weapon is ‘presumed to be a new ICBM’ as it is longer than the existing KN-08 or KN-14 missiles. US defence secretary James Mattis said Donald Trump is ‘aware’ of the launch and has no further comment. The South Korean defence ministry said in a statement: ‘North Korea attempted to test an unidentified type of missile from Sinpo area in the South Hamkyong Province this morning, but we suspect the launch has failed.’ (BT)

JAMAICAN IS OLDEST WOMAN ALIVE – A Jamaican woman, Violet Mosse Brown, has made history as the oldest person in the world following the death of Italian Emma Morano, on Saturday. Morano was born on November 29, 1899. Mosse Brown, also known as Aunt V, who lives in the northern parish of Trelawny, is 117 years old, having been born on March 10, 1900. The Jamaica Observer reports that her eldest child, Harold Fairweather, at age 96, is said to be the world’s oldest living person with a parent also alive. The US-based Gerontology Research Group (GRG) says in 1900, when Mosse Brown was born, Jamaica was part of the British West Indies, so her records are from the British government, in Queen Victoria’s time. “Unless a surprise candidate comes out of the trees, she is the oldest living Victorian,” Robert Young, director of the Los Angeles-based GRG’s Supercentenarian Research and Database Division told AFP. The previous oldest living person, Morano, died at her home in Verbania, northern Italy as the last survivor of the 19th century. The world longevity record, Young noted, remained with French woman Jeanne Calment, who died at 122 in 1997, having outlived both her daughter and grandson. A supercentenarian is someone who has lived to or passed their 110th birthday. There are estimated to be 300–450 living supercentenarians in the world, though only 50 verified cases are known. (BT)

On Wednesday, April 19, the team will be in Christ Church, fogging Newton Terrace with Avenues, Newton, King’s Court, Ashby Land, Lodge Road, Durants Development, Evergreen Road, Windy Ridge, Church Hill, Providence, Pilgrim Road, Coverley, Coverley Terrace and surrounding areas.

On Thursday, April 20, spraying takes place in St Philip in Crane, Union Development, Apple Drive, Tangerine Street, Pine Avenue, Seaview, Long Bay, Ruby, Ruby Park, Ruby Tenantry, Work Hall, Jessamy Lane, Union Hall, Union Park and neighbouring districts.

Fox & Friends in the henhouse: how Trump’s beloved show wields power

The president and the Fox News morning show have built a symbiotic relationship: the program defends Trump as it helps set his agenda

I like that group of three people, Donald Trump said this month. They had a man who was saying: Trump is the greatest president ever and there will never be one like him.

Trump was referring to Steve Doocy, Ainsley Earhardt and Brian Kilmeade the hosts of Fox & Friends and a segment he had seen on the show. Its one of the presidents favorite programs, and it may well be the most influential television program in the world.

On 7 March, the president tweeted five times in direct response to topics discussed during the three-hour Fox & Friends, on the Fox News Channel. It wasnt a one-off.

On 29 November, Trump suggested that anyone caught burning the American flag should lose their citizenship or spend a year in jail. He sent his tweet at 6.55am ET 30 minutes after Fox & Friends ran a piece about a protest in which someone burned the American flag.

At 6.04am on 26 January, Trump blasted off a tweet about Chelsea Manning, the whistleblower whose sentence was commuted by Barack Obama. Manning had just published an article critical of the former president.

Ungrateful TRAITOR Chelsea Manning, who should never have been released from prison, is now calling President Obama a weak leader, Trump wrote. Terrible!

At 5.50am, Fox & Friends had carried a banner that referred to Manning as an ungrateful traitor. Mediaite noted that the anchor that day, Abby Huntsman, had said Manning was slamming President Obama as a weak leader.

The next month, Trump echoed a Fox & Friends suggestion that UC Berkeley should not receive federal funding. He also mused that Obama had been too soft on Russia 12 minutes after Fox & Friends held a discussion about how Obama had been too soft on Russia.

Fox News turned down an interview request for this piece, but by any standard its morning show has had a remarkable year. As Trumps popularity soared, so too did the number of people watching.

According to Nielsen media research, between February 2016 and February 2017, the program increased its viewership by 46% averaging 1.7m viewers a day last month. It is by far the most popular morning show on cable; on average, MSNBCs Morning Joe brought in 847,000 viewers this February, while CNNs New Day reached just 639,000.

Fox & Friends, which airs every weekday, is in some ways a typical breakfast show. It combines light, fun features a recurring item on Monday was a video of a toddler getting swept off her feet by a door; on Thursday the show celebrated National Puppy Day, with harder news and commentary favorable to Trump.

On Monday, Trump was being criticized in much of the mainstream media as he has been for weeks over alleged ties to Russia among his campaign aides. In the Fox & Friends studio, efforts were being made to tell viewers why Russia connections dont matter.

The people tasked with this were the Security Moms a group of four women, presumably mothers, who are sporadically wheeled out to discuss national security issues.

Appearing above a chyron that said News You Cant Use, the four women set about trying to convince themselves, and viewers, that American families are just not interested in reports that Trump advisers may have been colluding with Russia to help him win the election.

Earhardt kicked off proceedings by asking the Security Moms, who were seated in tiers like the members of Queen in the Bohemian Rhapsody video, if any of them were concerned that President Trump and his campaign colluded with Russia to get elected?

No, the moms said as one.

They want to uphold this narrative as if its factual and its not factual, said Deborah Antignano.

A caption popped up, identifying her as the mother of a 13-year-old girl.

Report real news. Do away with the fake news. Because Americans, quite frankly, were all tired of it.

That was the end of that. Except later that day came a bombshell.

The FBI director, James Comey, told the House intelligence committee the FBI was investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. He added that there was no basis to support Trumps claims that he had been wiretapped by Obama.

For Fox & Friends, this presented a problem. They had to address Comeys testimony: it was the news of the day. But they had to do it in a way that told the viewers including the president there was nothing to see here.

They had already deployed the Security Moms on Monday. They couldnt summon them again. There are no Security Dads. Something else was required.

The solution was to clip together 20 instances of Comey declining to comment and tell viewers: You didnt miss much.

A hostile work environment

In Fox & Friends world, Trump is never wrong and everyone always loves Trump. Its quite a contrast with the liberal world of New York City, where the show is filmed.

The Fox News studio is one block south from where NBCs Today show is broadcast, and four blocks north of ABCs Good Morning America. Those two shows average about 4.5m viewers and their studios are common tourism spots.

People stand at windows behind the presenters, waving frantically and calling family members to tell them to turn on the television. The shows encourage this both have sections on their websites giving directions for fans. Every day, scores of people line up outside. Its fun. Its convivial.

Fox & Friends, despite also being filmed against a backdrop of midtown Manhattan, does not do this. If anything, the studio is hidden away. If you manage to find the address, all you are met with is the imposing grey concrete of Fox News brutalist headquarters.

Theres no opportunity to stand outside. No ogling through the windows. The backdrop of the show is a view of Sixth Avenue but filmed from 50ft up. If youre committed, you can still get onscreen, as the Guardian did on Wednesday. But youll never be more than a blob in the distance.

Unwelcoming and fortress-like, Fox News HQ stands in stark contrast with Fox & Friends the show. With those videos of toddlers toppling over, the puppy visits and the reassuring asininity of the Security Moms, its a warm and cozy place.

The three hosts seem to get along well. Doocy, who looks a bit like a scarecrow whos just had his hair done, is the alpha male. Kilmeade, a New Yorker with close-set eyes and a childlike curiosity, is the everyman. Then theres Earhardt, a former CBS reporter who is probably the most intelligent person associated with the show.

But despite the apparent intimacy, Fox & Friends has not always been a happy place to work. For seven and a half years, Gretchen Carlson got to sit alongside Doocy and Kilmeade. But she was bumped in 2013 and then, in June 2016, fired from Fox News altogether. She brought a lawsuit against the channels then chairman, Roger Ailes, accusing him of sexual harassment. Fox News settled for a reported $20m. Ailes resigned in July.

Carlsons complaint was filed against Ailes, but it also named Doocy. Her fellow presenter had created a hostile work environment, Carlsons claim said, by regularly treating her in a sexist and condescending way, including by putting his hand on her and pulling down her arm to shush her during a live telecast.

Doocy stayed on, apparently unpunished. Fox News did not respond to questions about whether he ever faced disciplinary action.

Do you love Trump?

The mutually beneficial relationship between Trump and Fox & Friends you provide feather-smoothing, ego-boosting coverage, I agree to tweet positive things about your program and sometimes appear on it did not spring out of nowhere.

For four years before running for president, Trump had his own slot. He appeared weekly, usually by phone, on Mondays with Trump.

The segment was a platform for the kind of rambling, free-form missives that came to characterize his 2016 campaign. Trump would call up to weigh in on a variety of issues sometimes war, sometimes jobs, sometimes the Oscars and, increasingly often, Barack Obamas birth certificate.

Fox & Friends would air the billionaires claims without criticism, and with no acknowledgment of how damaging they were.

In a March 2011 clip discussing the issue of whether Obama had been born in the US he was Trump said, without evidence, that the then president had spent millions of dollars trying to get away from this issue. At the end of the conversation, the hosts chuckled.

Donald Trump, who we all know was born in this country. All you have to do is read the side of his building, Kilmeade said.

The Fox & Friends hosts would frequently ask Trump if he was going to run for president. At times, they seemed to be actively encouraging it.

In a clip from 7 May 2015, Kilmeade went on a celebrity stroll with Trump a walk down Fifth Avenue that was essentially an exercise in showing Fox & Friends viewers just how popular, and how electable, Trump was.

You seem to have this natural relationship with the so-called blue-collar worker, Kilmeade told Trump, who pointed out possibly using alternative facts how many people on the street seemed to like him.

Look at the response, Trump said, pointing at five people who remained silent as he walked past.

A little later, a truck drove past and the driver leaned out of the window.

Do you love Trump? Kilmeade shouted.

I know you, the driver responded.

If he did love Trump, he had a funny way of showing it.

I enjoyed being with you. I love your show, Trump told Kilmeade.

Then the future president, not known for the consistency of his views, showed that when it comes to Fox & Friends, at least, his commitment has never wavered.

The three of you are fantastic people, he said of the hosts. I wouldnt do this for anybody but you.

Người đẹp Hoàng Thu Thảo, đại diện của Việt Nam, đã giành ngôi vị Hoa hậu tại cuộc thi Nữ hoàng sắc đẹp toàn cầu 2017 (Miss Global Beauty Queen) diễn ra tối 19/10 tại Hàn Quốc. Đây được xem là thành tích chưa từng có của Việt Nam tại đấu trường nhan sắc Quốc tế khi 2 năm liên tiếp đại diện Việt Nam đều giành vị trí cao nhất của cuộc thi.

Có mặt tại sân bay, người đẹp được chào đón nồng nhiệt bởi bạn bè và người hâm mộ. Người đẹp Ngọc Vân (Á khôi 1 Người đẹp Hạ Long 2014, Top 8 Miss All Nations 2015) cũng đến chúc mừng cô bạn thân Hoàng Thu Thảo.

Dù xuất hiện khá khuya sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất, người đẹp sinh năm 1994 được nhiều người hâm mộ chào đón. Hoa hậu Hoàng Thu Thảo vui mừng khi gặp lại fan của mình. Người đẹp chia sẻ bản thân thấy hạnh phúc bởi ngay khi bước qua cửa hải quan đã thấy hàng trăm trẻ gọi tên mình.

Hoàng Thu Thảo cho rằng tình cảm mọi người dành cho cô rất đáng trân trọng. Để được yêu mến hơn nữa, Thu Thảo sẽ nỗ lực trong công việc, cũng như tích cực tham gia các hoạt động giải trí, nghệ thuật.

Cô cho biết điều đó quan trọng nhất là đã thể hiện hết mình và mang về thành tích cao nhất cho Việt Nam. Đây là điều mà Hoàng Thu Thảo rất tự hào khi đã làm được.

Chia sẻ về những kế hoạch sắp tới sau khi đăng quang ngôi vị Hoa hậu, Hoàng Thu Thảo sẽ thực hiện nhiệm vụ của Tân Hoa hậu tại Hàn Quốc, tham gia các sự kiện quảng cáo, thời trang và phim ảnh tại xứ sở Kim Chi. Bên cạnh đó, khi trở về Việt Nam cô cũng sẽ trở lại quê nhà tham gia các hoạt động thiện nguyện và nhân ái. Hoàng Thu Thảo sẽ tham gia phim ảnh tại Việt Nam khi cô vừa nhận lời tham gia một dự án phim. Cùng với đó, cô sẽ có chiến lược xây dựng hình ảnh nghiêm túc và dài hơi với các dự án nghệ thuật. Hoàng Thu Thảo mong rằng độc giả và người hâm mộ sẽ luôn dõi theo hành trình Tân Hoa hậu mà cô đạt được.

Đương kim Hoa hậu Nữ hoàng Sắc đẹp Toàn cầu sinh năm 1994, từng đăng quang danh hiệu Á hoàng 1 tại cuộc thi Nữ hoàng Trang sức Việt Nam 2015. Thu Thảo hoạt động trong lĩnh vực người mẫu và từng đại diện cho Việt Nam tại cuộc thi Hoa hậu châu Á Thái Bình Dương – Miss Asia Pacific International 2016 tại Philippines và lọt top 6 gương mặt tài năng.
