Bonus Miraidon and Koraidon pic because I thought it was funny that Miraidon is actually much smaller (sleeker) than Koraidon (long leggy) but its tail can be stretched so they're the same height. Also funny that Miraidon is very photogenic and Koraidon is very not which seems in line with the idea that Miraidon is the future "upgraded" model

played through teal mask in a vc with my friends this weekend. this was basically my team’s experience

I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on the plot of Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, but the more fic I read, the more I wonder if there’s something I missed cuz like

We know by the end of the game that the original Professor has died, and we even know How it happened, but we’re never explicitly told When

In a lot of the fics I read, writers place the Professor’s death at several years before the main story starts, probably because Arven says he stopped getting emails from his parent years ago

But that doesn’t seem right to me, cuz even though we’re not told When the Professor died, we’re told that after the territorial dispute that led to the Professor’s injury and subsequent death, our Miraidon/Koraidon fled Area Zero…

…which is depicted in the opening cutscene, where we see that Miraidon/Koraidon flies out of Area Zero, tries to go to the lighthouse lab, then loses consciousness and falls onto the beach where the player finds them

This implies, to me, that the Professor died right before the start of the game, because I can’t see any reason why there would be a significant gap in time between the territorial dispute, Miraidon/Koraidon’s escape, and the player finding them

And anyway this is way more compelling to me than the alternative, because yes, it’s heartbreaking to imagine that Arven ventured down into Area Zero to find a parent he didn’t know was dead,

But it’s even worse to imagine that he got So Close to actually finding them alive, that if he hadn’t been forced to retreat, he might have actually had a chance to see them face-to-face one last time before they died

I just think there’s so much more potential for angst there, and the fact I don’t see it written more often makes me wonder if there’s like, some bit of lore I missed that confirms the Professor died before Arven went into Area Zero the first time

i think the reason why im so drawn to spirit tracks and pkmn scarvi is that having the legendary/princess as a companion rather than a goal that marks the games completion makes me feel satisfied the way i would after helping a friend

my brother always teases me about how I still havent finished botw after almost 7 years bc "id rather be out picking flowers" which i wont say is untrue. and yes i know Zeldas been holding off ganon for 100 years, yes i can get some sort of idea what her relationship with link was like by recalling memories and going through her diary. ive always loved botw for its unique storytelling and setting which makes it stand out, because it lets you get to know who you're saving.

but because theyre memories, it only works if theres something for the player to investigate that already happened. its retroactive (but effective nonetheless)

on the other hand, spirit tracks does something similar but instead of having the player try to piece together memories and interpret them as a spectator, you actually have an opportunity to get to know zelda yourself by talking to her and working together. besides making it a gameplay mechanic, giving the player control over how they interact with zelda makes it so much more personable.

and I find that making the goal feel personal instead of an obligation gives me more of a reason to work towards it. I know what kind of person botw zelda was but as the player, shes still very much a stranger to me. but spirit tracks zelda? thats my friend!!!! she invited me to go to the beach after we get her body back!!! i dont want to whip her to make her move faster thats mean :(

you know how hostage negotiators are trained to introduce themselves and get to know the person theyre negotiating with because its harder to hurt someone when you know what their favorite food is? its kinda like that, because it feels like im helping a friend than being told or led to do smth

and although i havent played scarvi myself, i feel an attachment to koraidon and miraidon even just watching playthrough clips because its like!! thats my weird scaly dog!! it loves sandwiches and we're friends!!! you know!!!!!!

I DO YES I actually have a collection of them! Most of them are from childhood since every time my parents went to Target or Walmart and took me with them I'd ask them for a plush and they'd usually let me pick out one or two. I'd also spend all my allowance on Pokemon plushies so I have an entire box of them in my room lol
