The only Yuletide favourite to pivot around an attempted suicide, Capra’s post-war fable is a fascinating melange of social and personal impulses and the questionable charms of home.

The Dead Poets favorite Christmas movies (inspired by the cute post @everythingisawayoflife made of the Poets favorite films):
Knox Overstreet-
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)- He especially would love the beginning, when Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed are young and in love (“I’ll lasso the moon for you” is SO Knox coded, oh my stars)
Love Actually (2003)
Home Alone (1994)
A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
Charlie Dalton-
Jingle All the Way (1996)- you cannot tell me this man wouldn’t love Arnold Schwartzzenager as the every day family man trying to hunt down a turboman doll. He would be going around doing his best Arnie impression for days
Christmas Vacation (1989)
Die Hard (1988)
Gremlins (1984)
Neil Perry-
White Christmas (1954)- a Christmas musical? sign this man UP
Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
The Holdovers (2023)
Elf (2003)
Todd Anderson-
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
A Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Little Women (1994)

Scrooged (1988)
Batman Returns (1992)
Also Die Hard (1988)
Bad Santa (2003)

Helluva Boss gang Sinsmas HCs
Tumblr media
Okay, I lied about not posting Helluva spam. The swag never stops.
I watched White Christmas for the millionth time last night, and it got me wondering what the IMP gang and a certain regal birb would watch around the holidays. Canonically, media from the living world is still very much a thing in Hell (both Titanic and Shrek are mentioned in S2E3, Exes and Oohs), so here are my theories. Feel free to reblog with your own ideas!
Hear me out, but I think Blitz's favorites would be Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Outwardly, he would say that the Grinch should've burned Whoville to the ground, and Rudolph should've told Santa to go fuck himself, or even use his antlers to gore the fat piece of shit, but inwardly, I think Blitz likes stories that feature a misfit finally getting the respect and appreciation they deserve. Rudolph probably edges out The Grinch a little bit, because a reindeer is kind of like a horse, right? He also has a soft spot for Die Hard, but always remarks that he could've had the situation handled way better/faster than John McClane. Probably would've had enough time left over to fuck Hans Gruber.
I bet that Loona, edgy chick that she is, loves all the Christmas horror movies. Christmas Evil, every installment in the Silent Night, Deadly Night series, every version of Black Christmas. Her more recent favorites are Inside, The Lodge, and Christmas Bloody Christmas. She likes to pretend she's too cool for Gremlins, so every year Blitzø has to do this thing where he insists they watch it together over eggnog (can hellhounds have hot cocoa?), not because he loves the movie, but because he knows she does. She'll roll her eyes and grumble, but will be hiding a small smile every time she takes a sip of nog.
Millie and Moxxie take turns picking movies around the holidays. Millie loves the classics: Home Alone, Elf, all the Rankin & Bass specials, and Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas. Moxxie, of course, must watch his musicals. He loves Meet Me In St. Louis, 1961's Babes in Toyland and Scrooge (1970) starring Albert Finney and Alec Guinness. However, Millie has introduced him to couple of films that he enjoyed more than he thought he would, namely The Polar Express and A Charlie Brown Christmas (Mox feels like he can relate to poor Charlie Brown whenever Blitz is feeling particularly ill-mannered). However, their shared all-time favorite that they absolutely must watch every year is The Muppet Christmas Carol.
Stolas' taste in Christmas movies is a bit harder for me to figure out. I'm sure there's a movie or two that he's watched with Via every year since she was little (for some reason I'm thinking she would love Prancer? Maybe a version of The Nutcracker?), but what about the man himself? Does he enjoy the charm of old Christmas movies, like Miracle On 34th Street or It's A Wonderful Life? Or is he all romance all the time, with movies like The Holiday and Love, Actually (I can't fucking stand Love, Actually but we're talking about Stolas here)? I also wonder if similar to Hell-a-Novela, they have their version of the Hallmark channel. The Hellmark Channel? And they have a million movies about a succubus from the big city (Lust) finding love/the true meaning of Sinsmas with a country imp from Wrath? If that were a thing Stolas would probably be all over it. He'd probably watch it to comfort himself while recovering from his banishment on Blitz's couch!
I've spent way too much time thinking about this.

HOTD Favorite Christmas Music + Movie Headcanons
Merry Christmas everyone! Wanted to post something Christmassey for them (also just want to post more HOTD headcanons) so here you go!
Tumblr media
Rhaenyra: For music I think she’s a big fan of the pop classics: Jingle Bell Rock, Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree, Last Christmas and All I Want For Christmas Is You. As for movies, I feel like she’s a fan of The Holiday (prefers the Jude Law/Cameron Diaz story) and Love Actually (prefers the Bill Nighy story).
Alicent: Her favorites are definitely the choral versions of all the classic religious songs: Silent Night, Hark The Herals Angels Sing, Do You Hear What I Hear etcetera. Also fond of Pentatonix’s version of Mary Did You Know? Her favorite Christmas movies are It’s A Wonderful Life and Meet Me In St. Louis.
Daemon: I feel like he doesn’t put a lot of thought into Christmas music: just puts some of the more modern songs on and calls it a day. Loves Die Hard.
Viserys: Loves all the classic crooner’s renditions of Christmas songs (Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Bing Crosby), as well as the score to A Charlie Brown Christmas. Also loves Miracle on 34th Street and It’s A Wonderful Life.
Otto: Also a crooner guy, and that’s pretty much all he’ll listen to. Enjoys the movie White Christmas.
Aegon: Loves that one Trans-Siberian Orchestra song (you know which one I’m talking about). Loves Krampus, Home Alone, Die Hard, Violent Night, cries to It’s A Wonderful Life and unironically enjoyed Red One.
Helaena: She just has the Phoebe Bridgers Christmas songs on repeat all December, and is also fond of Silent Night. As for movies, I feel like she really loves those classic stop-motion television specials, especially Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town.
Aemond: He does not strike me as a super Christmassey guy, but I can see him enjoying the more religious aspects of it - so same as his mom for the music, and declares The Hateful Eight his favorite Christmas movie.
Baela: All I Want For Christmas Is You and Santa Tell Me lover. Her favorite Christmas movies are Die Hard and The Holiday (prefers the Jack Black/Kate Winslet story).
Rhaena: Loves Fairytale of New York, the Phoebe Bridgers Christmas songs, White Winter Hymnal and Laufey’s cover of Winter Wonderland. As for movies, she loves Tangerine and The Holdovers.
Jace: Likes 80s Christmas music (Last Christmas, War Is Over, Wonderful Christmastime), and is yet another Die Hard fan.
Luke: Enjoys the secular classics (ie Jingle Bells) and Last Christmas. Loves Home Alone and A Christmas Story (but gets uncomfortable when Ralphie thinks he’s shot his eye out).
Rhaenys: I honestly feel like she has very diverse taste; she enjoys a bit of everything (classic, modern, religious, secular). Though if I had to guess, I’d say that her favorites are The Christmas Song and White Christmas.
Corlys: Yet another crooner guy, and I think he enjoys It’s A Wonderful Life and White Christmas.
Larys: Listens to the score from any Christmas themed horror movie. Loves Black Christmas and Eyes Wide Shut.
Alys: Listens to the horror scores as well, but also Christmas themed Gregorian chants and Weird Al Yankovic Christmas parodies. Also loves Black Christmas and Eyes Wide Shut. She and Larys watch them together every Christmas Eve.
Mysaria: I feel like she loves the modern pop songs - Santa Tell Me, Underneath The Tree, All I Want For Christmas Is You. As for movies, I think she’s another The Holiday lover (prefers Jack Black/Kate Winslet) but my random headcanon is that she watches a bunch of Hallmark movies every year and ranks them with a set of very strict criteria.
Criston: Choral versions and crooners exclusively. Loves Miracle on 34th Street.

I want the origins of Parker’s relationship with Christmas.
I imagine Christmas is complicated for kids in foster care and by all reports her time in foster care was rough, but Parker LOVES it and BELIEVES.
Also, I want to know her reaction to watching “Miracle on 34th st”

Bringing back Mama Munson for Xmas - according to google, Die Hard has not been released yet in the ST timeline so Christmas becomes divided to "before DH" and "post DH" eras in regards to the fights over the best Christmas movie, Mama is loves Die Hard, Joyce will not come round to the Truth that Die Hard is a Christmas movie, Eddie declares Hopper a coward for sticking with "It's Christmas, Charlie Brown" and Steve is and always will be a "White Christmas" purist
We just watched Die Hard with my son yesterday, and then Home Alone.
I agree with this assessment but now I'm wondering which one of the characters swears by Miracle on 34th Street and which one prefers It's a Wonderful Life.

Hi Hazel!
’Tis the season for some holiday asks!
What is your favorite holiday or winter tradition?
Have you been naughty or nice this year?
What is your favorite holiday movie?
Kitty Kat, my dearest!!
My favorite winter/holiday tradition? hmmmm, there are so many, baking my Nana's cookie recipes, decorating the tree, creating the winter spiral labyrinth, going to the Midwinter Revels...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The spiral was my UU congregations contribution to the town's tree lighting event. There's a 5k, Santa comes and lights the tree, the art center does storytelling and ornament making... there are activities all over Main St. And we do the Winter Spiral, in the function hall of our church - downstairs - all candlelight and winter greens marking the spirals path. People used to take a candle and add it to the path, making it brighter and brighter. Ther was never an accident, but people got nervous, and we changed it to taking a shell or stone to the center table and making a wish.
One of the things I really love about it is there's this is a carnival atmosphere outside, and people, adults and children, would come down the steps, and they'd settle down, take a breather. And they'd enter this space. There was this hush. It's dark and soft and quiet holiday music is playing. Some people would sit in a chair on the side and watch others walk the spiral. It was lovely. We don't do it for the town anymore. Our space has changed, and we don't have the space. Maybe they'll be able tovdocitnagsin someday. But we do a smaller one for the congregation. This photo is of the smaller one.

As for whether I've been naughty or nice? Santa will let us know!
And holiday movies?? I love them!
The Muppet Christmas Carol, The Holiday is my rom com holiday movie, oh and While You Were Sleeping, Elf, The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, A Miracle on 34th Street, Its A Wonderful Life.. gosh so many

J.T. Walsh Roles - Nice Guys Edition!
Now, we all know he's played a lot of bad or questionable characters, but he's actually played a decent amount of nice or non-scumbag characters!
Starting with who I think is one of the nicest, we have Agent Houston in True Identity (1991), he's a long-suffering FBI Agent who failed to capture a big time crook and has to work with a stage actor in order to finally bring him down. He's a very jaded but very wholesome character who finally shines when he finishes the job he set out to do.
Tumblr media
Next, we have Ed Collins in Miracle on 34th St. (1994). Even though he was the prosecuting lawyer, there was no real malice to his character, as anyone would think the same when an old man claims to be Santa Claus! In the end, he still politely asks for Santa to visit his kids at Christmas.
Tumblr media
Now we have one of my favourite characters he's ever played (largely for nostalgia reasons!) - Chief Insp. Francis Mahoney in Why Me? (1990). A true no-nonsense cop with no qualms over speaking his mind to whomever is around! He begrudges working with what he deems 'the criminal element' of LA in order to find a stolen Byzantine ring, but does so knowing that only criminals trust other criminals!
Tumblr media
We have another cop character with Sheriff Mitch B. Rivers in Silent Fall (1994), who is tasked with finding the killer of two prominent citizens of their little town of Waterville. The only witness is an autistic 10 year old boy who doesn't speak, needing the expertise of local psychiatrist Dr. Jake Rainer. Things unfold and it is discovered that Mitch was actually having an affair with the murdered wife, though thankfully had nothing to do with the murders.
He's a decent enough character, though he admits he's had a wandering eye over the years and his wife clearly knows.
Tumblr media
And we have another cop character, Chief Jack Ruhle in Iron Maze (1991). He's the police chief in a dying town since the steel works was closed down. An attempted murder takes place in the old steel works and he's tasked with trying to unpick what led to the attack. Very little is known about his character on a personal level as nothing is revealed other than he's married and seems to be attempting to quit smoking, though this does seem to correlate with a period that J.T. himself was attempting to quit smoking.
Tumblr media
We have another of my favourites wth Principal Arnold M. Stoddard in The Beniker Gang (1984). The film was based on a book titled Dear Lola by Julie Angell and the character in the book would probably fit more on the scumbag scale! He was also named Mr. Reedy in the book and seemed to care more about public appearances than the children.
Thanfully, in the film he seems to care more than was originally written, and although not explicitely stated, his concern for the school seems to stem from just how small their town is and how small towns often end up having to send their children to neighbouring town's schools.
Although he might not originally have meant to be a decent character, J.T. brings a wholesomeness to the character and is certainly more personable with the children than in the book.
Tumblr media
FBI Agent Jason McThune in The Client (1994) is next. A very dedicated character, but very much the scapegoat to Tommy Lee Jones' Reverend Roy Foltrigg and very much becomes his lackey.
As a character, he works for the FBI based in Memphis, but longs for more interesting areas than chasing Elvis sightings. There's a wholesomeness to him, but he's a little bit weak-minded.
Tumblr media
Ah, Lt. Col. Matthew Markinson from A Few Good Men (1992)... A man conflicted between his duty to obey his commanding officer, and his duty to do the right thing by an accidentally murdered private. He ultimately does the right thing, but it costs him his life. A very sad ending to a character with good morals.
Fun Fact - J.T. actually chose this character out of all the supporting roles.
Tumblr media
Another of my favourites, and probably @tequilasunrise28 favourite, we have the delectable DEA Agent Hal Maguire in Tequila Sunrise (1988). He's determined to bring down a Mexican drug lord known as Carlos as well as Mel Gibson's character Mac, who has worked for Carlos many times over the years, but who claims to have 'gone straight'. Hal isn't buying it of course, but his investigation is hindered at every turn by Kurt Russell's character Lt. Nick Frescia, who is a friend to Mac.
As thngs inevitably go south, Mexican cop Escalante, whom Hal has been working with to bring down Carlos, is discovered to actually be Carlos, unbeknownst to Hal. He's rightfully infuriated, which is only exacerbated by the fact that both Mac and Nick knew who Carlos was.
He's unfortunately shot in the back by Nick as he's trying to take down Mac after catching him with Carlos.
Out of a bunch of dirty cops, Hal was the only one not working both angles, and yet many reviews talk about him being the problem...
Tumblr media
Last in the list we have Sheriff Reese Goodloe in Morning Glory (1993). He's a decent Sheriff, but a terrible husband. He's having an affair with the local waitress, even buying her electrical goods to keep her sweet despite complaining about how he'll explain the money disappearing to his wife.
The waitress turns up murdered, and a newcomer to town played by Christopher Reeves is arrested as he was the last to see her alive and has been inprisoned for murder before.
It's discovered that she had recently had a termination as she'd become pregnant by Reese, but he wasn't responsible for her murder; two random men in town eventually confess during the trial.
Had he been responsible for her murder, this would definitely have tipped him into the scumbag roles list!
