Dig Yerself a "Dead Outlaw"
Here’s a crazy yarn about a crazier yarn! In 2006, Broadway brilliantine David Yazbek (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Full Monty, Tootsie), having read my book No Applause and learning that I was also a playwright, approached me about a quirky project he wanted to collaborate on about the epically ill-fated Oklahoma outlaw Elmer McCurdy (1880-1911). We met for a few writing sessions to try to sort…

Detail portrait of the iconic folk music club and bar 'The Fat Black Pussycat Theatre' in June, 1963. The theatre and bar, situated on MacDougal Street with an entrance on Minetta Lane, was a popular performance venue for many legendary folk musician including Richie Havens, Tiny Tim, Mama Cass Elliot, and Shel Silverstein. Sources have cited that a largely unknown Bob Dylan wrote 'Blowin' in the Wind' at the Fat Black Pussycat in April, 1962.

Dead Outlaw at the Minetta Lane Theater has me in a chokehold
#dead outlaw#dead outlaw musical#sorry for my subpar artistic skills. I cannot convey how cool it was to see this show in person#and I'm so eager to have the soundtrack somewhere I can listen to it (if it isn't headed to another theater which I dearly hope it is)#it's about american exceptionalism. it's about mortality. it's about sideshows and showmanship. it is about and i cannot stress this enough#a mummy#made me so happy for musical theater as an art form and was just a great time overall#uhh if you've seen it please talk to me about it. let's be insane together

Nobody Cares: Laura Benanti in your ear
Laura Benanti’s autobiographical show is far from the first live performance that Audible has produced at the Minetta Lane Theater in order to turn it into an audiobook; the company has been releasing “Audible Originals” recorded in front of a live audience at that theater in Greenwich Village since 2018. But Benanti is surely the first to mock Audible for doing so, as she does from the very…

March 31, 1647 1st Africans were baptized in NYC
1639 Manatus Map showing the location of Blacks that worked for the Dutch West India Company and the church in the Fort. The location of the Blacks on this map may have been temporary. Some 30 Blacks owned land or worked for private individuals and lived closer to the town. An early settlement of free, slave, and half-free Blacks lived around today’s Minetta Lane and Washington Square Park. On…
