Boxy Boo's complicated origins and dark purpose

with boxy boo being added into the main game with chapter 3, i decided to talk about his origins as a character. most people know that he originates from project playtime, but his origins go even farther than that.

boxy boo was first teased before project was even announced. the first image is from one of mobs minecraft animations, from august 27th 2022, months before project was first announced. the second image is from the one year anniversary video, and you can see boxy's box next to huggys foot. at the very end of the video, a dark image of boxy's box can be seen, as well as some numbers, likely the date of oct 31, which is when project was first teased for real.

on october 31st 2022, project playtime was officially announced on the mob entertainment twitter. that wasn't the only thing announced here. inside this image was a code, a code that led to a FTP [file transfer protocol] server. this server was part of an arg that would lead up to project's release, called rowan stolls computer database. the server is closed now, but all the information has been archived via the wiki

the ARG begins with this video, the first find when the FTP server was unlocked. this was paired alongside security 01 and 02, 2 gifs of security footage of the playtime co. facility. the rest of the files were password locked. in this video, rowan stoll, the head of technology at playtime co., expresses concerns about there being possible nanny cams inside huggy wuggys eyes. this is the start of his skepticism towards playtime co. that come to light during this arg.

the second things unlocked started from an image posted by the playtime co. twitter account. this confirms boxy boo's creation date as a toy, which is during the 60s. featured in the image is a bunch of boxy boo toys being made by employees. using this image, people were able to find a code, along with the remainder of the codes hidden in the twitter accounts for leith pierre, stella greyber, and eddie ritterman. putting the code through an A1Z26 cipher yielded the results of "A_invenerunt_infernum", which translates to "they found it from Hell". this is referring to boxy boo, who will later be referred to as a hellspawn again in this arg. combining this code with the date 05/28/91 gives us our second video. in it rowan stoll backtracks on his previous statements, presumably not wanting to get in trouble for questioning playtime co. in this video, the password "Birth_place_11/28/67" can be found by listening quietly to the text to speech playing in the background. this password unlocks security footage 03.

playtime co. posted the employee safety rules video, which is related to the arg. the code "bcaebbefgd" could be found within this video, which leads to this twitter post by rowan. in the background you can see boxy hiding. apparently, playtime co. has been making rowan fix the puzzle pillars, revealing them for the first time. maybe this was his punishment for stirring up trouble.

the playtime co. twitter account posted a new image, one of the train at the station. at the bottom of the image, credit is provided to playtime-co.com. going to this website leads to an email address, which gives a phone number. when called, you are immediately and indefinitely put on hold, and a piano tune plays. around this time, rowan stoll posted about fixing the phone line, and adding the tune heard. using the piano notes heard in the tune itself gives the code "DEADFACEAFACADE", which can be translated to "Dead_Face_a_Facade". this is a password for a file called priv_doc01, which includes several things. a poster for boxy boo, a pinboard full of images, and a disciplinary note on patty hall. patty hall is a character mentioned in chapter 2, in the rejects room. patty hall sabotaged a batch of toys by messing with the paint machine. in the disciplinary note, its mentioned that patty was sent down to storage b to "receive further instructions". remember this, it will be important. the boxy boo poster contains a code, which unlocks rowan stolls third and final video log. in this video, rowan expresses distress, thinking that playtime co. is going to kill him for finding out too much. he confesses that he is going to upload everything he knows and has found, which is what this FTP server is. he also says that playtime co. "has something that eats people alive", which we know is boxy boo. rowan knew he was likely going to die, but put his last efforts into getting information about playtime co. out publically. deciphering the strange static heard at the beginning through a spectrogram gives the password "diaboli_intra_buxum", which translates to "devil inside the box". the initial password can be used to unlock boxy boo's blueprints, as well as security footage 04, which depicts the project playtime theater map.

on november 22nd 2022, the FTP database went offline, leaving the rest of what rowan uploaded unknown. the playtime co. twitter uploaded a new post, with a single image of a poppy flower and the message "I SEE YOU". each account that posted this image had letters hidden in their avatars and banners, each image containing broken morse code at the bottom. the morse within all the images translated to "caro est in aeternum", which means "the flesh is eternal". the letters in each accounts banner and icons gave 2 different codes. "OVIHPKNABALZQZ", and "Play fair. Row: <- Column: ^, Filler: X. Innovation is key." the answer was a play fair cipher, with innovation as the password. the cipher translated to "NOXFORGIVENESS", referring to rowan stoll. a new account was created on the FTP server, and using the information gathered, access was granted. the username was "no_forgiveness" and the password was "caro_est_in_aeternum" inside, was a singular file, titled "THIS_IS_WHAT_HAPPENS". showcased is the fate of rowan stoll.

it seems that playtime co. found rowans database, got rid of it, and replaced it with a message to anyone else who considers trying to expose or defy them.

just two days after the arg ended, on november 24th, the cinematic trailer for project playtime was released, and boxy boo was finally revealed. just a day later, a gameplay trailer for the game released. counting up till the release of the game, teaser images were posted, giving us even more of boxy.

even after projects release, boxy boo's story was not finished. over the course of project, 2 tapes were added into the game. the first introduces us to harley sawyer, a major player in the bigger bodies initiative. he is mentioned many times after this initial introduction, including in chapter 3 and the chapter 3 arg. in the first tape, harley sawyer talks about the bigger bodies initiative, whose intention was to replace workers with living toys. he believed this would cut down on lawsuits and losses, as well as take care of insubordinate employees. in the second tape, harley sawyer visits boxy boo for the first time. boxy boo is the first successful bigger body created as confirmed by harleys own words. harley says that they need to "tailor your [boxy's] appetite to flesh", and asks for an update on rowan stoll. this is obviously leading up to rowans fate in the arg where boxy killed him.

boxy boo appears several times after this, in restricted_restoration, being the monster that attacked thomas. you can hear the sound of his music box winding up before the attack, and his paw and roar when he actually attacks him. he also features in chapter 3, both as cutouts and murals, and in the hour of joy, as featured above. BUT WHAT IS BOXY BOO'S PURPOSE? boxy boo was the first successful bigger body, created in 1991. after his toy, created in the 60s, failed to become as popular as other mascots, harley sawyer found a new purpose for him. boxy boo's purpose is not to play with kids, or even be around people at all. his purpose is to kill insubordinate employees. he killed patty, and he killed rowan. this is why harley wanted him to learn to become accustomed to flesh. he wanted boxy to be hostile from the beginning. boxy was never meant to be around people. he was meant to have employees sent down to him to be eaten when playtime co. deemed them deserving of it. thats what happened to rowan and patty. the devil in the box ate them.

Junji Ito brain rot where Tomie, Pretty Boy, Chizumi, and Souichi all play Minecraft together. They have a server and built their houses, villages, etc.

Souichi being a try hard, staying up until 4 a.m, trying to learn red stone but ends up forgetting everything when he wakes up.

Chizumi who loves to collect loot from mobs. She definitely has a farming area.

Tomie is the best builder out of all of them. She built herself a castle and everything has little details everywhere.

Pretty Boy organizes their minigames. Those lucky/unlucky block game, obbys, bedwars, etc.

What if they had like a channel or something?

Scratch that. Tomie, a popular twitch streamer, randomly does a live that isn’t scheduled (which is out of the norm on her channel) and tons of people pop in and see Souichi being chased by creepers, Chizumi trying to the kill said mobs, and PB, in the distance, pointing an arrow at Tomie herself.

I need to draw a comic of this. BAD. Popularmmos is my childhood and that channel gave me huge inspo. Most likely will try an animatic with some clips from that channel.

Bonus:

Kouichi, Sayuri, and Souichi made a YouTube channel when they were like really young. They uploaded them going into the forest, pranking their parents, and Souichi chasing them with the Michael Myers theme song in the background, armed with kiddy scissors.

They eventually forget about the channel. They had all forgotten the password along with the email attached to it so now it’s just in the past.

Until years later and one night where Souichi is bored with a ruined sleep schedule, stays up at 3 a.m randomly, and tries to guess the emails and passwords to their childhood YouTube channel.

He gets it right after trial and error, and nearly jolts up. He texts Sayuri:

“U awake?”

And she responds:

“Yeah whats up”

He sends her a picture of the unlocked channel and can hear her loud ass gasp from his room.

They spam Kouichi’s notifications until he wakes up. Being mostly asleep, he can barely read, but after rubbing his eyes a few times he reads the words on the screenshot Souichi sent.

“No way”

It’s 11 a.m and their parents can’t understand why their kids are randomly getting along so well and recording themselves baking a cake with nothing to celebrate.

The little channel those three made blew up a bit over the years that went inactive. Some comments under their early videos were:

Turns out when the three of them were given unlimited wifi access, other kids had the same thing.

- they all have a Minecraft server together that's utter madness! Riddler has perfected redstone and he makes puzzle riddle traps in game, it drives Joker INSANE. Ivy goes around planting giant trees and flowers without asking. And Bane has a nice little house and no one dares ruin it, it brings him so much joy.

- Scarecrow always has chapstick on him, it's mango flavored

- Riddler has a tamagotchi, he will cry if it dies. If you're the goon that has to watch it while he's in Arkham, be scared.

- Harvey still posts on his Twitter, Twoface has an invite only after dark account. He just reposts memes everyone else has already seen and overshares random personal information and middle school level poetry. Also Harvey & Twoface are currently in a four year long tweet war about an episode of Law and order

- Out of all the rogues, Joker owns the most shoes. He has a storage unit full of racks of different tailored costumes, shoes, and makeup. He wears an expensive french brand of makeup he has to ship to Gotham, and he doesn't do any crimes without wearing his lucky lipstick brand

- Scarecrow loves animal crossing, his island is decked out and Halloween themed. He hosts parties with the rogues on his island

- Riddler set up a VPN & free cable/wifi for all the rogues to use so they can stream whatever, but you have to answer a riddle to get the password. Joker hates it but he also needs to watch the new criminal minds reboot before Harley spoils it

- one time during a party, the rogues managed to convince a very drunk Harvey & Twoface to sing/reinact songs from phantom of the opera and later jekyll and hyde (Twoface is emotionally a theater kid)

- Harley and Twoface get really into murder podcasts together one time while in Arkham. Even after they all break out, they video call after new episodes drop to talk about it. One time they tried to do a podcast but it turned out Joker did the crime so like it wasn't much of a plot twist

- Harley streams her crimes sometimes & actually makes some sick side cash off it! Half the time her chat is just obsessing over her interactions with Ivy. Also Ivy is one of her top donors

- Catwoman is TikTok famous, she posts story times, how to do simple parkour and pick locks, and hauls from crimes. All of her money from sponsorships and stuff goes to charity (she gets sent a bunch of free cat food for her cats, it's awesome!)

- Joker scrapbooks, he did it for a gag originally but low key got into it and now he may or may not have a scrapbooking room. He tries to go to Michael’s incognito but like, everyone knows.. The employees are like “yo, the Joker is at the help desk asking about if we have batman scrapbooking decals? Do.. Do I ask if he wants to sign up for the rewards program? Is he allowed to sign up?” Yes he signed up for the rewards program

- Joker also often signs up for various rewards programs but when he doesn’t want their emails, he gives them scarecrow’s email. Scarecrow has a bounty for whoever stops the man signing up ALL his emails for the Chilies newsletter

- the rogues throw Harley a roller skating lasertag party, where they also learn Harvey can't skate to save his life. He's the dedicated party mom that's standing at the railing about to fall down while he cheers on the others doing tricks and he's in charge of everyone's coat at the table. Joker uses all of his tickets to buy bouncy balls and sticky hands. Catwoman is a god at laser tag, she nearly gave Scarecrow a heart attack when she dropped form the vents to snip him. At the end of the party, they all steal Harley the go kart that's worth like 10,000 tickets. Batman shows up to Harley doing donuts in the parking lot while all the other villains are fighting with sticky hands and bouncy balls

- Bane likes camping and takes all the rogues in hopes to get camping buddies, they all almost die out in the woods because it's a disaster but also he had a great time! The Joker brings a camera and the whole time is making dated Blair Witch jokes with Scarecrow, which Harvey doesn't find funny and not because he's scared of the Blair witch.. Riddler screams running off into the woods because of a bee "chasing" him, no one sees him until three weeks later when they remember that they forgot him in the woods. Clayface uses a survivalist persona/character the whole time they're out there but he knows nothing about survivalism, eating poisonous berries and telling them poison ivy is a healing herb. Ivy is probably the only one suited for camping and she has to make sure most of them don't die

- Harley collects pins! She has a pin board in her hideout. The other rogues give her pins they find/obtain around Gotham

- The Joker has spent 3 years trying to perfect confetti smoke bombs

I do the link. I submit the code, then the email, then the password...then the code again then the email then the password and so on so forth until the link expires.

I make a new Microsoft account, as suggested, and it actually seems to be getting somewhere. Until the game is like "Oh you have to sign into the account linked with your game. Yknow, Jyan, which we can remember the name of but not your freaking details".

So I try that. Get in a loop again because it's that outlook email. I sign into Gmail outlook, everything looks fine. I have a string of very recent emails from Amazon about a refund so I know my email *works* at least.

But log in still won't work. So I look on the Microsoft question thing for answers and someone has had the loop issue. There's a link about account recovery. I'm desperate, I mean what the hell nothing else is working, so I use that link. They ask for an alternative email to send me a confirmation where they explain that I did not give them enough details and, as a really really kind courtesy (BECAUSE THATS HOW THEY PHRASED THIS, LIKE IT WAS A COURTESY) they've locked me out of my account :). Yay :). Because they take security reallllly seriously. Except they haven't Because I can still access my emails on the Gmail app but still can't do anything else.

By the way, did you know once you link a Microsoft account to a ps4 account you can NEVER UNLINK AND RELINK A NEW ONE?! Why. What do you GAIN Microsoft. Oh also because ps plus is a paid service they really hate you using it on other accounts of the same ps4 device or really any online features on any account other than the main one. Because what.

So clearly my issue is too complicated for online articles. I've tried and got no where, in any case worse. Let's try reddit - SYKE ALL THE BOTS RUINED REDDIT AND I CANT ACCESS ANY TECH SUPPORT GROUPS TO ASK QUESTIONS MYSELF UNLESS I GET SO MUCH KARMA. GREAT.

So because I reblogged and made a detailed post about how to get the Twitch cape, and I think today is the last possible day to redeem the TikTok one, I will also post what I know about getting that one, just in case. I am not TikTok proficient, but I did install it exactly long enough to get the dumb cape, because I am a sucker.

So here's what I learned: it seems like you do in fact have to use your phone app. The website does not appear to work. If, like me, you don't want to give TikTok any more personal info than necessary, I recommend using the email and password method of creating an account (not the phone number, not the google account, none of that). It does have to be an email you can check and get their validation code from, not a fake one you made up. Also, don't give it permission to access your contacts when it asks. That is not needed to get your cape.

Once you have the app installed and are logged in, you can go to the live category and search for Minecraft. For me, the first stream listed under the category worked. I typed "Minecraft" in chat and waited about thirty seconds before spotting a thing in the upper right corner that I tapped, and that was my code notification.

Just like with the Twitch cape you have to go to Minecraft's redemptions page and scroll to the bottom, then enter that code in the correct box. Second to the bottom, for me.

After doing all that, I uninstalled the app. It was on my phone for under two minutes total, and I am not sure it was worth it, tbh.

I can totally see this 🥹, I’m sad because I haven’t played minecraft in forever, I used to play on my ps4 but then my Microsoft account got logged out and no matter how many times I log back in or change the password nothing works! It’s like I’ve been blocked!

I even made a whole new email with Microsoft and still nothing 😭 I recently got a switch but I haven’t been able to test whether I can log in yet!!

Got stoned and decided to play minecraft for the first time since last year, and the Byzantine hell it put me through.

First it made me migrate to a Microsoft account. No problem, right? I go through the steps and everything seems like it's working until the page where it asks you to log into Microsoft. I use the email and password for my Mojang account and it keeps saying it's incorrect, and click "Forgot my password". Apparently I already had a Microsoft account associated with this email, probably from when I first got my computer. I go to reset the password and...

It tells ne that my email account is no longer accessible. "You've lost access to your email." I do some googling, and find out that if you don't log into your Microsoft account for two years, it can be rendered inactive and the email address forbidden from being reused. (Probably to prevent scammers reusing people's email addresses?) It tells me I have to either create a new email account or use an alternate one.

Keep in mind I am high at the time.

Luckily I have another email address, so I switch the account to that one and send the password reset link there. I click it, choose a new password, and go to log into Minecraft.

The screen greets me with "Welcome, Mrs nL PacMan X!"

That is not and has never been my username. It gave me a new Xbox Live account (I don't play Xbox) with a randomly-generated username. I change it to something I prefer (and the page has the audacity to tell me "you get one free gamertag change, after that you're gonna have to pay for it") and launch Minecraft, and the home screen is telling me "Buy Java & Bedrock Combined Edition!"

Having no interest in buying a bundle consisting of the version I already have plus a version I don't even want, I look around the screen and find no obvious play button, just "Buy Now!" Turns out you have to go to the Installations tab (rather than the obvious choice of the Play tab) and click Play on the version you already have installed.

Migrate to a Microsoft account, it's easy!

So I tried logging in one way, it said oops, sorry can't do that. I tried it a different way and it said wrong password so I reset it and then I got into the portal fine to merge my account to the new age of Minecraft.

We're good. Then they asked me to sign in again with the exact same account I just used and signed in with so I did and then it said it was wrong so I reset my password again and then I tried using the new password and it said wrong.

I'm like did I not just reset my password for the same email and login just fine? I logged into merge my account and then it wanted me to use the same login to just play the game.

So anyway. Then it kicked me out and said you've used too many login codes today. 🙄
