Judging by the trailer, it feels like they made this movie for an audience that doesn’t know anything about Minecraft except that it’s “the block game.” As much as it may look like Minecraft (and that’s debatable), it doesn’t FEEL like Minecraft.

Anyone who hasn’t experienced Minecraft for themselves will be getting exactly what they’re expecting from this movie, meanwhile the people who are actually familiar with and love the game will feel alienated because this is such a poor representation of the thing that they love.

You know what my basis is, for believing this? It’s not the stylization of the cgi, though that’s part of it. It’s not the comedic tone, though that’s part of it. It’s not the weird choice and lazy execution of live-action integration, though that’s part of it.

It’s because the trailer isn’t trying to say that Minecraft is an experience just waiting to be understood. It’s because the trailer isn’t trying to say that the oddities of Minecraft are what make it fascinating, sometimes even wonderful (and, yes, quite often amusing). It’s because the trailer isn’t trying to say that Minecraft is something you can find meaning in; whether meaning is a family, a skillset, a creative passion, a sense of belonging, a community, a reservoir of memories, a means of connection, or a better understanding of oneself.

It’s because the trailer is trying to say that Minecraft is ridiculous and incomprehensible.

This trailer doesn’t show me a movie about what it’s like to play Minecraft.

This trailer shows me a movie about what it’s like to not play Minecraft. And that’s the perspective it’s trying to sell the movie on. That’s the perspective it expects its audience to find relatable.

The trailer tells me that this movie was not made for the people who play Minecraft. It was made for the people who don’t.

I just hope that, if it does make people want to try playing it, they come to appreciate what the game really is.

if there's anything I can thank the Minecraft movie for, it's for reviving old (and even sparking new) hyperfixations on Minecraft media and series' created by people that actually care about the game to some degree, out of the need to escape into the arms of something that is just anything but the Minecraft movie.

Silent feature length colour film literally made mostly in Minecraft, maybe with some better animation mods. I guarantee that no animation firm will do better than just normal shaders and normal Minecraft movement.

The fact that some people are only now realizing that Minecraft Story Mode isn't bad just because of the Minecraft movie trailer honestly is very telling as to how dogshit the trailer actually is.

Mcsm wasn't perfect, but it had charm and good characters.

The Minecraft movie trailer is just a big company looking at the amazing game that is Minecraft and thinking, "Oh, it's just a blocky game with some guy named Steve."

I have not been this upset about a movie since I watched the Lego Ninjago Movie. I did not wait over 8 fucking years to have the Minecraft movie look like that. God fucking damnit.

After the shock of the Minecraft movie trailer has worn off on me, the more and more I'm genuinely disappointed by it.

I've been playing this game for at least a decade now, I don't quite know when I started playing it but I do know I was no older than eight. So many others grew up with this game as well, and to think what we've gotten is nothing more than a cheap cash grab riding the backs of celebrity names.

The most glaring issue is obviously the visuals. Why the hell did they think "live action" was a good idea? Minecraft never gloated about being at all realistic, in fact it did quite the opposite. It's a game where everything is made out of fucking CUBES WHY IS IT LIVE ACTION. IT'S NOT EVEN ENTIRELY LIVE ACTION, THE MAJORITY OF IT IS STILL CGI AND IT'S NOT EVEN GOOD CGI.

The visuals of the mobs are awful. Many people have compared them to those Minecraft Mobs in Real Life videos from 2015, and yeah they totally look like that. Not only is it just hideous, but there are so many amateur mistakes in the visuals. This movie is being produced by Warner Bros. While I'm not that familiar with their discography, they have made some movies that are so visually appealing. Like the Harry Potter movies (while I may not be fond of Harry Potter and especially not the author- I can admit the movies are still pretty) and the Iron Giant. So they are capable of making movies that look better than this abomination.

Also, can we talk about how I can probably tell you the main plot points of the movie just by seeing the trailer? This random group of people- who just so happens to look like various celebrities- get sucked into this video game world and they spend the first half of the movie trying to get back to their world. But oh no! After the halfway point this big bad villain that threatens to destroy this world is introduced and the main cast realizes that they don't actually want this world destroyed because they like it! So then they go through this rushed fight and even more rushed conclusion before going home. Roll credits.

It just looks like a Jumanji clone.

It is genuinely so disappointing that this is the game that we're getting, and I absolutely do hope it gets the Sonic treatment. I hope it gets so much negative feedback we at the very least get better visuals.

Minecraft is about creativity. You can't play the game the exact same way twice, and that's why it has such a large fanbase! Because there is a lot you can do with the story of the world you're in. There are tons of roleplays and smps on YouTube that back up this claim. Like Aphmau's MCD or Mystreet, the Empire's smp, Hermitcraft, even the DSMP was more interesting than this (from an outsider's pov btw, I only ever watched Ranboo.)

The movie feels like it was written and designed by people who didn't even know what Minecraft was before writing this.

Alright, i keep seeing posts about the minecraft movie, so i might as well add my thoughts to the mix. Ramble below the cut.

So i was introduced to minecraft when i was super young. I played on a shitty old computer. My dad showed me how everything worked, and playing minecraft on this old computer while sitting on the couch with him is one of my oldest memories.

Minecraft became a beloved game to me. It’s kind of how i made friends. I had no access to the internet, no youtube, no discord. So i would go around my class in elementary school, asking if anyone played minecraft.

I played with some of my best friends. During the quarantine, i got into the dsmp, and then into hermitcraft. I played more and more, i built things, i created worlds and stories that i still remember and love.

When i heard there would be a minecraft movie, i was ecstatic. I had lists of headcanons, lore and stories i hoped i would see.

And i watched the trailer, and i didn’t see minecraft. I saw yet another whitewashed steve, ugly CG, and an unfaithful story.

I genuinely have so many issues with the trailer. The piglins are peaceful unless provoked. They attack because you are intruding on their home. They are not trying to come into the overworld and take over, you are going into the Nether and messing with their home.

And Steve. I mean… Jack Black is awesome, but Steve isn’t white! Steve isn’t even a separate character, Steve/Alex is the player, they are there to represent someone waking up in this new world and surviving, building something beautiful, getting attached to every pixel. The Steve in the trailer isn’t Steve.

I’ll just mention one more thing, because this would be stupidly long if i typed out all my thoughts. The CG. I don’t understand why it wasn’t animated. The Mario movie was animated, and while that had its own problems, the visuals were gorgeous! I gasped when i saw Rainbow Road. I also gasped when i saw the pink sheep, but for the opposite reason. Finding a pink sheep is one of the wonders of exploring the minecraft world, and they turned that experience into a cheep, ugly gag.

It’s not minecraft. I hope whoever wrote and designed that shit feels ashamed. I hope the movie flops. And i hope minecraft itself never turns into this shitty money-grab.

Cool cool, they're an interesting bunch. Definitely one of the mobs with the most intelligence, fair pick. Except... Why are they in the over world?

We're just going to ignore the whole zombification thing they do the second they breathe the air under blue skies? Yeah? Not important?

Maybe the virus is Part of the Plot, fair enough.

But then there's the matter of gold, and the fact that these guys are actually one of the most easily pacified mobs that aren't just peaceful.

You're telling me the main cast couldn't pull a pair of gold boots out of a ruined portal chest or something? You're telling me the biggest threat in this story are the guys that literally stop what they're doing if you hand them something shiny??

Yeah? We're going with that?
