Chell and Karan

Some art I did a while ago of some more octoling OCs! I really like working with inspiration from octopus and squid species and considering how I can apply them to Splatoon with creating new OCs. I do have a list of ideas that I want to work with. It has been a while since I've last drawn Karan. It's fun drawing her really long, dangly 'hair' and working with the patterns. I know octolings usually have their suction cups on the outside while inklings have them on the inside. As Karan is a mimic octopus, I thought it would make sense for her to have inside suction cups to better blend in with inklings. Splatoon- Nintendo Karan, Chell- Me (@circifox)

Shape-Shifting Octopus?

The Mimic Octopus captures the hearts of sea enthusiasts as it has earned the award of one of the best animal actors in the world!

The Mimic Octopus gets it's name from it's ability to mimic almost any other animal sharing it's habitat. Not only do they act the part by copying the behavior of the other animals, but they can change their shape to appear the same way as well!

They have developed this ability as a survival tactic, for the cephalopods live in murky regions of the Indo-Pacific that lack coral and other hiding spots most octopuses would usually use. Therefore, the mimic octopus hides in plain sight.

They are even intelligent enough to determine which animal to disguise as in order to ward off specific predators!

Emotions 48.5” x 32”, acrylic on maple panel, 2017 (scroll) 🐙🍁 I’m exploring the unconscious patterns that drive human behavior. Feelings are sometimes complex and seem to contradict, layering the uplifting positive pleasures against the downturned negative displeasures. An amazing impersonator, the Mimic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) dashes to the bottom of the shallow sea, chasing off a confusing labyrinth of striped zebra batfish (Platax batavianus). Bright Violet-green swallows (Tachycineta thalassina) and dragon flies (Anisoptera), soar up to the sky. My aim was to use scientific accuracy to illustrate these normally disparate species to educate and engage the viewer in an energetic sense of optimism. This was one of the most beautiful panels of maple wood I’ve ever had the privilege of working on. I left the maple wood grain natural to allow it to contribute to the narrative by contrasting the horizontal movement of the grain against the animals. The fluid pattern of rings in the wood grain was shaped by time, not unlike a fingerprint (or a painting for that matter).
