“My palate has become quite refined”
Not refined enough apparently because 95% of the stuff in this museum is fake. Most of it is badly faked. Above is a “Rembrandt” and below is supposed to be Cranach the Elder lol

Croatia
But first the bus passed through Slovenia.  Let me tell you, the border crossings in the balkans are very annoying.  Between Slovenia an Croatia you have to get off the bus twice.  Once to get a stamp saying you are exiting Slovenia and one to say you are entering Croatia.  The only picture I took in Slovenia:
Tumblr media
But I do have a stamp in my passport so that counts as visiting the country right.
So Croatia. Beautiful country.  I met up with a friend who is studying in Freiburg this year so I wasn’t traveling alone anymore.  It was helpful because I know a little Czech but have no experience with Croatian, Bosnian or other balkan language.  My friend though has learned Croatian and visited the country before.  That, I think is the one upside of traveling with someone else.
We did the Free Spirit Zagreb tour.  Great tour guide who was very knowledgeable in the history of Zagreb.  Zagreb used to be two separate towns until 1834.
The very famous St. Marks church on one hill.  This town is were all the government buildings are.
Tumblr media
A look over to the other ‘hill’.  Controlled by the church the buildings on the main street are still owned by the catholic church. It was very interesting seeing how alive the church still is.  There were monks and nuns walking around doing normal things.  My only experience of devoted life has been visiting my mom’s friend who is a nun in an abbey/farm outside of Boulder, CO.
Tumblr media
And this is the rest of Zagreb.  Everything outside of the old city walls has grown up since the unification of the cities in 1834.
Tumblr media
Here is the national theatre.  We had to get our culture on so we went to some museums.
Tumblr media
This is the Mimara.  We didn’t go here because we didn’t feel like interpreting art. So . . .
Tumblr media
We went to the Tesla museum of technology.  I loved it.  My friend maybe not so much.  I love looking at engines, card, spacecraft.
Tumblr media
There was even a demonstration of the Tesla coils and Columbus egg.  The presenter was speaking Croatian so I didn’t get much, but watching electricity work is fun.
Tumblr media
I eventually caved and visited the museum of Broken relationships.  There is now one in Hollywood.  If I were to visit that one I should at least take the opportunity to visit the original one.  Very interesting but a bit too hyped.
Tumblr media
Last thing my friend and I did was find the restaurant KavaTava.  It was so good.  The main thing on their menu was pancakes that were drenched in chocolate instead of syrup.  The placemats had maps of the best places to kiss in Zagreb and alone the side was ‘kiss me’ written in different languages.  Being the polyglots that we are we tried to figure out, without using the internet, which languages were used.  Very instagram worthy and the food and service were good.
Tumblr media
Loved Zagreb.  It was very modern and we had some good weather during our stay.  I would love to go back and visit more museums and do more exploring.  Highly recommend if you like taking photos and instagramming.

The Literary Grand Tour of the World: October task
Imagine you’re planning a real tour around the world. Which countries would you most like to visit and why? Pick at least 5 countries and outline a journey (including cities, sights, etc.). @kat-from-minasmorgul
Planning a tour around the world is lot harder than it sounds, there are so many places I’d like to see, that it’s impossible to choose where to start. Also I really don’t like research, which is why I always let my partner decide which places we should see whenever we go on a competition trip somewhere and have time to explore. Since he’s studying architecture that mostly means seeing a lot of weird buildings, but it’s always interesting so I’m not really complaining :)
Anyway, I guess I’ll make my life easier and start from the next trip I’ve already at least somewhat planned, then move up through Europe before flying back home again. So first stop:
Zagreb, Croatia
The thing I love most about European cities, is that they always have some sort of Old Town. So even if you have no idea what you want to see in that city or have no money for museums or traditional tourist attractions, you can just go and take a walk and you’ll definitely see something interesting.
While I’m already there, I might as well add some museums to the list. Museum of Broken Relationships and Museum of Illusions sound the coolest, but I also wouldn’t mind visiting some more traditional museums like Archaeological Museum and Mimara.
And let’s be honest, it wouldn’t really be a dream trip without checking out at least some bookstores, so Planetopija, Znanje, most places on that list and whatever other shops happen to catch my eye on that walk around are also added to my imaginary travel plan.
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Again, first a walk around the city to look at all the fancy buildings and bridges, then a tour of the Ljubljana Castle (yes, it’s probably not that much different from Estonian castles, but still cool).
I’d also visit the zoo to feel less like a school trip and take a break from all the history and culture. It’s always nice to look at some cute animals for a while and not have to think.
And definitely check out the bookstores again, because otherwise what’s the point?
Vienna, Austria
I’ve been there once before, but I spent most of my day in the competition hall and didn’t actually see that much so a do-over is definitely needed.
I’d obviously go and see the Schonbrunn Palace and Gardens and the zoo. A visit to the Natural History museum sounds also cool and I’d definitely have to check out the amusement park since we don’t actually have one in Estonia.
Since it’s an imaginary trip, I might as well add the State Opera to the list and imagine there’s something cool at the exact right time for me to see :)
And finally visit some more bookstores because in this version of reality I have unlimited space in my baggage.
Prague, Czech Republic
First of all, why the hell is it spelled like that?
Second of all, I feel I’m starting to sound like a broken record by saying I’d take a walk in Old Town and visit bookstores. But that’s exactly what I would do.
Maybe I’d switch it up a bit and go czech out the nightlife for a change ;)
Germany
The next country on my imaginary tour is Germany just because it fits nicely on the route. I need some time to relax for a change so no city trip this time. I'm sure there are plenty of nice spas so I'll just pick one and sit in different pools and saunas for a while.
Obviously I'd still go and visit the Neuschwanstein Castle because it's awesome.
Copenhagen, Denmark
For this city I'll just take my mum and let her show me around since she just recently got back. We have really similar tastes and she doesn't really mind visiting the same places more than once.
Honourable mentions: England, Scotland, Iceland, Norway.
I got tired of planning and finding more specific things to see than just narrowing down the country.
Also I’d love to get out of Europe but I feel that going to the Americas or Asia or Australia or Africa needs a whole separate trip for not just each continent but each country because they’re so big and far away and I’d need at least a day to get over the cultural shock and I really can’t handle it all even if I’m not actually going there anytime soon.

Seventeen years ago I trundled into Zagreb train station (on a train) from Trieste, Italy. Zagreb wasn’t the final destination. No, no our goal was a more obscure (and seriously bullet ridden) northern spot on the map; Varazdin. Football is the answer you seek to the question you are asking. My time spent in Zagreb back then was confined to the train platform and a quick sprint for a can or two of Karlovacko pivo at the nearest kiosk. I hadn’t been to Zagreb since. My time this time around was slightly more relaxed; I was free all afternoon and evening to peruse its offerings.
A lot of things to see in Zagreb are just that. Things to see. You can stand, see, and move on so the time spent at each attraction isn’t too long. And every sight is within walking distance from each other. It’s an enjoyable city to wander.
What did I do?
Zagreb Cathedral
A pretty impressive cathedral in the league of world cathedrals. Certainly not Cologne but impressive all the same. I went twice, once in the early afternoon and once in the evening just in time for mass to end so it was interesting to see the people leaving and mingling. It’s worth noting that there was a very young demographic to the worshippers; Croatia still has to catch up with the ever-growing global discontent with the Catholic church that many young people have.
Ul. Ivana Tkalčića
The main restaurant and bar pedestrian street. You will find something to eat here. And drink. I had a good chicken burger in Rocket Burger (with a local beer) and a tasty chicken gyros in El Greco.
Stone Gate
Originating in the 13th century but most likely looking like it is today from the 18th century. A stone arch which houses a little church dedicated to Mary. Mother of God. Who else? You can walk through it, take a quick look and be on your way. Be conscious that it is a place of worship and stay out of the way of the prayer vibes directed at the statue of Mary.
St. Mark’s Church
A short pant uphill from the Stone Gate is the eye catching St. Mark’s Church. Its roof resembles one of those bead art things kids do. But better obviously. One of the better rooves I have seen. Doors were locked and I didn’t have a key.
Croatian Museum of Naïve Art
This is a fine stop to make to spend 20-30 minutes and it also closes later than the bigger art galleries in the city. 25 Kuna and you’re in. There’s only about 5 or 6 rooms but it’s an interesting look into the Naïve Art scene of Croatia over the past number of decades. Not an art movement I was familiar with but something that is on my radar now. Worth the quick peek.
Lotrščak Tower
Walking towards the funicular back down to the shopping area you will pass by the Lotrščak Tower built around the 13th century. If you find yourself around here at midday put your hands over your ears as the cannon on top fires to mark the daily occasion. And why not?
Funicular
This is a funky little mode of transport which takes about one minute to make the ascent to the upper town and obviously the descent to the lower town. It costs 4 Kuna for a scheduled trip or 20 Kuna for an ad-hoc trip. Shortest cable car in the world I hear so that’s a feather in the cap right there. After going up in it I walked back down so I could find the…
Tunel Grič
These are cool. Built during World War II and then, sadly, having to be used later on during the Croatia War of Independence as bomb shelters. These days you can use them as underground routes to different streets or just walk through them because they look pretty cool. They even have some public toilets near the main entrances.
Park Zrinjevac
A nice park in the city centre to take a stroll along. Dog watching is key here. I would imagine it becomes a hub of activity in the warm summer months. It’s got a 19th century music pavilion if that tickles your fancy.
Ban Josip Jelačić
The busy hub of activity in the centre of Zagreb. Trams roll in and roll out and people walk in every direction to wherever the hell they are going. There’s a statue of Mr. Jelačić (a general who fought for Croatian independence in the 1800s) overseeing the daily commutes of thousands.
I missed out on a number of art galleries and museums due to their 5pm closing times. I really would have like to have gone to the Muzej Mimara to see their European art collection and the Museum of Contempary Art. One museum that is up on the top of the attractions list is the Museum of Broken Relationships in the upper town beside St. Mark’s Church. Yeah, not that appealing..
So don’t get put off wandering around Zabreb for even just an afternoon as you can pack a lot in.
