book rec by me
so you want to get back into reading books but have no idea where to start and disdain booktok (if you get me started on this however i will become an unskippable cutscene so that's for another day). understandable. there is so much out there and it is all so overwhelming and you don't even know what you like now that you've been a decade out of the game. again, understandable. it does not have to be scary. i will help you. below i have created some categories that can get you started.
i want to read Literature
literary fiction, with crossover from historical fiction and magical realism
PEACH BLOSSOM SPRING by melissa fu
THE VASTER WILDS by lauren groff
THE FAMILY CHAO by lan samantha chang
OUTER DARK by cormac mccarthy
SEVERANCE by ling ma
LIGHT FROM UNCOMMON STARS by ryka aoki
IDENTITTI by mithu m. sanyal
PIRANESI by susanna clarke
i want to read sci-fi/fantasy that won't break my brain
sci-fi and fantasy that is gentler on the brain cells. easier to grasp magic systems with multiple but not an overwhelming number of overlapping plotlines

KINGS OF THE WYLD by nicholas eames
THE JASMINE THRONE by tasha suri
THE CITY OF BRASS by s.a. chakraborty
A RIVER ENCHANTED by rebecca ross
JUNIPER AND THORN by ava reid
BLACK SUN by rebecca roanhorse
THE FINAL STRIFE by saara el-arifi
THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTER by andrea stewart
i want to read sci-fi/fantasy that forces me to lock the fuck in
i would not recommend picking these up as your first foray back into books after many years of not reading recreationally, but i'm not your mom.
THE SPEAR CUTS THROUGH WATER by simon jimenez
JADE CITY by fonda lee
THE FIFTH SEASON by n.k. jemisin
THE RAGE OF DRAGONS by evan winter
A MEMORY CALLED EMPIRE by arkady martine
GIDEON THE NINTH by tamsyn muir
THE ART OF PROPHECY by wesley chu

there is far more to the horror literary canon than stephen king and dean koontz, i promise. consider looking up warnings for these.

THE RUINS by scott smith
CONFESSIONS by kanae minato
EPISODE THIRTEEN by craig dilouie

SHE WHO BECAME THE SUN by shelley parker-chan
"all ya books suck"
like any other genre or book age group, there are duds and there are standouts. ya is not special in this regard. try some of these!
DIVINE RIVALS by rebecca ross
STRIKE THE ZITHER by joan he
THE RED PALACE by june hur
A STUDY IN DROWNING by ava reid
EMPIRE OF SAND by tasha suri
LEGENDBORN by tracy deonn
i check out and read a lot of these books for free via my local library by using the libby app (you can even add your friends' library cards to gain access to libraries in places you don't live). when i'm feeling like reading via audiobook, i use libro fm!
look, no one HAS TO read diversely. no one is going to be reverse fahrenheit 451'd and locked in a room with no fanfic and only books and not let out until they work their way through the entire literary canon. but reading, and reading widely, and reading diversely, is what teaches people to form their own opinions and question the things they are told. it's why they hang up stuff like "READ READ READ!!" in grade school classrooms.
we live under systems that increasingly benefit from going unquestioned. no, of course reading ASSASSIN'S APPRENTICE by robin hobb is not going to dismantle these systems tomorrow, nor probably even in our lifetimes. but doing it will help set up a world capable of doing it in the future. and until further notice, we are all part of this wretched world. might as well read a good story while we're here.
anyway, i'm reading THE WEST PASSAGE by jared pechaček and the new cmq book this week.

stayed up late reading gotsm and now i’m sad because rosemary loved kit with her entire heart and soul that she willingly gave up her life for him and because all she ever wanted to do was keep him safe, she never truly got to meet him at all 💔

listen i know there is every reason why it would make more sense in every possible way for the new witcher game trilogy to have a customizable player character but it is my biggest wish in the world that the mc would be Ciri. when do polish queer women born in the 90s get to win……….

Friendly reminder the Dragon Age Devs AMA is happening later today for all you Americans out there! Consider me very impressed that a majority of the questions with the greatest upvotes are quite critical of the game!
I linked it below!
#its happening at like 4 in the morning for me so i won't be able to join in the live trash fire I assume it will be#if anyone wants to ramble/send me their hot takes on what the devs say my inbox is open!#going to be all over it when I wake up!#a lot of questions about world states / lack of rp options / lack of depth to companions etc...#a lot of asks for patches to add more content like BG3 has done - like EA would allow that?! they'd charge $20 for shit they had them cut#questions about how lacking the lucanis romance is in terms of content too -> in general the romances are getting a lot of criticism#a really good question about retconning solas's motivations too#surprised i only saw one or two questions about the executors -> the one I saw was asking if it was in Gaider's plan for the series lmao#a few about production troubles and a few about misleading statements devs made#i am so very proud that no one is giving them wiggle room <3#especially about how they were misleading in their marketing of this game - that was outright scummy to consumers#EA is not entirely at fault for how misleading/vague they were in their marketing#Bioware doesn't have EA holding a gun to their head every minute of the day - they're multi-million dollar company#you don't need to defend them lmao#someone please ask them to release the Joplin Cut for me lmao#bioware critical#datv critical#edit - i 100% have a lot of sympathy for individual devs and the crappy work environment they're in#but when some of them are outright misleading customers about what is in the game its just shitty all round#i feel bad for the individuals and not so much the company and execs#veilguard critical

The thing is like, what exactly am I supposed to do with a one to one live action version of How To Train Your Dragon?
Like the original alreay exists, it's already out there being the original with all of the scenes they're copying, not to mention it's also a pretty new movie already, like we aren't remaking a cartoon from the 80s here, this came out in 2010. It's just like, what am I as someone who went to see the original film in theaters, what am I as someone who states this film as my favorite movie, like no seriously though what am I, a peak audience member to market this movie towards supposed to do with a one to one live action remake of How To Train Your Dragon when I can just rewatch the original and have an experience that's ten times better?

I’m sorry to have an influencer moment on here but I’m not lying when I say that these Tomato Cheddar Toasts from NYT cooking are hands down one of the best meals I have ever cooked for myself in my entire life (and I’ve been cooking daily for like 12 years lol) and they take like five minutes, most of which is spent waiting for the bread to toast. The recipe is paywalled so I’ll just say you take cheddar cheese and shred it on the tiniest side of your box grater/microplane, then mix together a 1:1 ratio of mayo and cheddar. Then when the bread is piping hot from being toasted you spread it on there (like a tbsp or two per bread) and the heat causes them to melt together into this insane creamy tangy spread. Then top with tomatoes and salt.
I have been eating tomato toasts almost every day this summer and I thought I had my formula down pat, but then I tried these and it changed my world. Genuinely a contender for last meal on earth if I had to choose. I have eaten it with every single meal since I got back from my backpacking trip except one bc I was invited to a potluck. I know my username might make you think I’m just overzealous but please for the love of god if you eat dairy and gluten and love tomatoes (and have access to some good ones) I am begging you to try this. On the left is the recipe pic and on the right is one of the ones I made. and like it doesn’t matter if no one tries this I just want this in my tomato tag to commemorate this unbelievable toast because I’m in a new era of my life for real

Hm it really sucks that entertainment and especially "immersive" entertainment is rapidly going down hill in quality because the people who are in charge are being as stingy as possible, despite society leaning more heavily into fantasy and escapism every day
