so you want to get back into reading books but have no idea where to start and disdain booktok (if you get me started on this however i will become an unskippable cutscene so that's for another day). understandable. there is so much out there and it is all so overwhelming and you don't even know what you like now that you've been a decade out of the game. again, understandable. it does not have to be scary. i will help you. below i have created some categories that can get you started.

i check out and read a lot of these books for free via my local library by using the libby app (you can even add your friends' library cards to gain access to libraries in places you don't live). when i'm feeling like reading via audiobook, i use libro fm!
look, no one HAS TO read diversely. no one is going to be reverse fahrenheit 451'd and locked in a room with no fanfic and only books and not let out until they work their way through the entire literary canon. but reading, and reading widely, and reading diversely, is what teaches people to form their own opinions and question the things they are told. it's why they hang up stuff like "READ READ READ!!" in grade school classrooms.
we live under systems that increasingly benefit from going unquestioned. no, of course reading ASSASSIN'S APPRENTICE by robin hobb is not going to dismantle these systems tomorrow, nor probably even in our lifetimes. but doing it will help set up a world capable of doing it in the future. and until further notice, we are all part of this wretched world. might as well read a good story while we're here.
anyway, i'm reading THE WEST PASSAGE by jared pechaček and the new cmq book this week.
#read books! i promise it's not 'all colleen hoover' THERE IS SO MUCH OUT THERE.#and the more attention that nonwhite noncishet narratives get the more this signals to the market that audiences are interested!#inb4 'why did fanfic catch strays 😭 fanfic is still reading' it absolutely is! and is integral to the fannish ecosystem!#they're not worse or better - but they're fundamentally different and serve a different purpose#my credentials are that i've read/written fanfic for 15 years and have written 2 million words of it through my life LIKE I'M ONE OF YOU.#anyway. i expect this will get like 12 notes but i had to know i did my part.

the key to surviving this like/reblog ratio and content quality drop crisis is to make things you enjoy, right? right????
#life#yes yes i know that the unfortunate truth about the internet is that funny and relatable stuff will always trump artistic things#wrote enough articles and saw the millions of views streaming into 'viral' moments#compared to interviewing artists that would put so much time and skill and frankly their soul into their art#only to be quickly buried underneath more 'marketable' articles#but just because it is what it is doesn't mean it doesn't hurt the soul#it truly hurts the soul scrolling through some of my tracked edit tags#and seeing people who spent days blending and doing font work and making the most beautiful colors and overlays#get a couple of hundred notes#at best#and then someone makes a low quality gif with whatever dimensions the text ain't even centered and it's thousands of notes like#i'm all for people learning and we all start out somewhere (god just look at my own first gifs lmao)#but the ratio just ain't rationing yaknow what i mean

I just rewatched (in two sittings, I confess) "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (2015), and I have to say, this movie is just fun and entertaining every. Single. Time. It really gets me that something where they care about the details and the storytelling and - oh! some of the cool camera shots! - didn't make the money and won't be continued. I mean, ugh, why can't we have more movies like this that "make it"? It's fun, it's clever, it's aesthetically pleasing, the characters are interesting, the story is interesting, there's no on-screen smut (there's innuendo and off-screen smut, but we don't have to see it, which means the actors didn't have to portray it, so that's good). It's just a cool movie. In fact, I don't recall much in the line of swearing? Which means that there's none of the more offensive language, because that's the stuff that always sticks out to me. I love the interactions and chemistry between the characters/actors. I love watching them go from a group stuck together, including two enemies, to a team and even friends. Oh, and it's a trip to Italy, besides.
I need more modern "Man from U.N.C.L.E.", so if anyone has some Hollywood-level funding just gathering dust and interest, have I got a suggestion for you!
(Slight spoiler below)
Also, Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander doing the accents is just fun, and Hugh Grant as the charming, chill, competent, and slightly cheeky guy behind the scenes? *chef's kiss
I also love the cuts back - here's what we showed you, and now here's all of what happened.
#man from u.n.c.l.e.#man from u.n.c.l.e. 2015 movie#henry cavill#armie hammer#hugh grant#alicia vikander#movies#i need more of this movie#it's got all the goods and didn't get the box office and that's just so stinking disappointing#where is my hundred million for funding a second film and marketing the heck out of it?#not like i have other priorities but still it's entertaining to fantasize about for a moment#movies everybody should see#if it's their type of movie anyway#rant

The thing is like, what exactly am I supposed to do with a one to one live action version of How To Train Your Dragon?
Like the original alreay exists, it's already out there being the original with all of the scenes they're copying, not to mention it's also a pretty new movie already, like we aren't remaking a cartoon from the 80s here, this came out in 2010. It's just like, what am I as someone who went to see the original film in theaters, what am I as someone who states this film as my favorite movie, like no seriously though what am I, a peak audience member to market this movie towards supposed to do with a one to one live action remake of How To Train Your Dragon when I can just rewatch the original and have an experience that's ten times better?
#ignore me#how to train your dragon#especially considering they literally made all of the dragons look exactly like their animated counterparts#and copied the shots and frames and the costumes one to one#like whats the point of this?#whats the purpose?#why are we spending this money to create the same movie over again but with different actors?#like we already made the best version of that film possible and all youre trying to do is recreate it but a little bit to the left#like what do i as an audience member get from that#what do i as the exact person youre trying to market this towards get from this new version?#other than a vague sense of nostalgia as youre movie slightly reminds me of the emotions i felt when watching the original version#for the first time but once again i can literally do that by watching the original version too#like i dont need you to spend millions of dollars to recreate emotions i can recreate for myself

I’m sorry to have an influencer moment on here but I’m not lying when I say that these Tomato Cheddar Toasts from NYT cooking are hands down one of the best meals I have ever cooked for myself in my entire life (and I’ve been cooking daily for like 12 years lol) and they take like five minutes, most of which is spent waiting for the bread to toast. The recipe is paywalled so I’ll just say you take cheddar cheese and shred it on the tiniest side of your box grater/microplane, then mix together a 1:1 ratio of mayo and cheddar. Then when the bread is piping hot from being toasted you spread it on there (like a tbsp or two per bread) and the heat causes them to melt together into this insane creamy tangy spread. Then top with tomatoes and salt.
I have been eating tomato toasts almost every day this summer and I thought I had my formula down pat, but then I tried these and it changed my world. Genuinely a contender for last meal on earth if I had to choose. I have eaten it with every single meal since I got back from my backpacking trip except one bc I was invited to a potluck. I know my username might make you think I’m just overzealous but please for the love of god if you eat dairy and gluten and love tomatoes (and have access to some good ones) I am begging you to try this. On the left is the recipe pic and on the right is one of the ones I made. and like it doesn’t matter if no one tries this I just want this in my tomato tag to commemorate this unbelievable toast because I’m in a new era of my life for real
#TOMATOES#tomatoposting#garden tag#food#recipes#<- for my own blog sorry#I’m so lucky to have space for an amazing huge tomato garden & the skill to do it well but if u like have one good tomato from the market#and want to do it justice…please consider#and literally this morning when I ran out of bread my entire day then revolves around either buying or making bread so I could eat this aga#in lol#nyt cooking#*revolved#honestly kind of insane that I’ve cooked a million billion meals that take so much more time and effort and yet this simple shit is like#theeeeeee pinnacle

Hm it really sucks that entertainment and especially "immersive" entertainment is rapidly going down hill in quality because the people who are in charge are being as stingy as possible, despite society leaning more heavily into fantasy and escapism every day
#jenny nicholson#everything just has echoes of something better#like so many shows games and experiences have remanents of really amazing concepts and thoughts that really passonate and creative#individuals crafted but higher ups go hm. nah. and then cut corners more and more#and opt to feature more “add ons” which is just another way to get people to shell out so they can avoid FOMO#wheres the showmanship? why is everything so openly and unashamedly stingy these days?#disney spends 10-23 million on an animatronic for a dark ride for a park no one really wants#where everything else on that said dark ride is just a looping screen or fake flora#there is such a huge market for escapism#now more than ever probably#and companies cant even provide#and its only going to grow

hi GT! thanks again for the great chapter—loved it (as usual).
just wanted to come on here to sing you praises with just how well you write touch/physical affection especially in the most recent chapter’s first half: draco & hermione being v touchy while entering hogsmeade vs. draco’s jealousy with ron + hermione, and how you depicted draco’s reaction to both (i.e., his awareness on just how not-platonic his actions were vs failing to see that ron and hermione might not be also sharing the same thing) and the way his jealousy flares up. it’s starkly real and engaging and you just leave us wanting more.
just wondering: would there be more platon-ish (or more) moments in the realm of Lionheart, since the books were PG?
hope u have a good day!!
Thank you very much! I hope you have a good day, too.
I think of Lionheart right now as a story that rides the line between PG-13 and R (for gore, and I guess also technically for swearing, since there's been more than one "fuck.") Those things will only scale up as the story goes on, to an extent that will soon surpass the books. If the original series can be split up into "children's / young adult" around the lynchpin of Book 4, I think of the volumes of Lionheart as "children's / young adult / new adult." New adult is, naturally, more capacious as a genre than young adult is, and I'm cautiously feeling out my comfort level in the new territory it opens up.
To be completely honest, I'm still making up my mind on how far to push past canon there. I know that explicit scenes are common and welcomed in the D/H fanfic space, to an extent even expected, but the jury is out on how much it will be relevant/necessary/something that I'll enjoy writing. (I'm aware that this is a totally confusing and not helpful answer. Friend, I also wish it was not like this.) Basically, I'm just trying to figure out what the story needs.
I guess the most I can say currently is that I'd definitely be comfortable writing it — I've written it before — and for the rest, I'll play it by ear.
#greenteacup asks#lionheart spoilers#new adult is such a weird and cool genre to me it didn't exist when I was growing up#i see it as a parent genre to the new 'romantasy' species of publication#which is itself like the sentimentalist's answer to pulpy sci-fi#and fantasy has been violently segregated by age bracket in a way almost no other genre has#it's like. everything is either Teeny-Bopper Dragon Wars or fucking game of thrones#or [blatant reskin of a classic fantasy novel that probably started as fanfiction].#like i enjoyed eragon but it did start as LOTR fanfiction. which is why i (LOTR & fanfic enjoyer) enjoyed it!! why be ashamed of that??#if everyone could just drop their pride and admit they like and respect well-written fanfics#we could save the commercial publishing market for really cool new original shit! we wouldn't NEED a million eragons and HP ripoffs!#they deserve to exist! just put them on AO3 where they belong!!
