Very long post and a lot of across the Spiderverse spoilers incoming:
I finally watched across the spider-verse yesterday and I couldn’t stop thinking about the Miles & Gwen and Percy & Annabeth parallels in that movie.
Starting with Gwen and Annabeth because they are not as similar as Miles and Percy but there’s still things to talk about. Gwen being Spiderman ending with her friend dying and getting blamed for it by her dad making her run away reminded me a lot of Annabeth being a demigod ending with monsters attacking her family a lot and getting blamed for it by her dad making her run away. Running away to a place where people have special abilities like you and fitting in and learning about it, thinking you can never go back to where you came from. Both had one of their only friends die (Peter) or at least be dead-adjacent (Thalia) which made them closed off and felt guilty even though it wasn’t their fault. And on a lighter note how Gwen was talking to the Vulture that didn’t belong to her universe and then Miguel just screamed Annabeth to me, like her clear pride that she wasn’t confused actually and knew about the multiverses and was trying to show what she was made off was peak Annabeth to me. Personality wise I just feel like their confidence and maturity for their age due to their experiences are really really similar. Also both of them eventually going back to their dads who have learnt to accept them for their abilities and they decide to make another try.
Miles and Percy have a lot of differences, main ones being their upbringing, school-lives and also Mile’s artistic side and being a bit of a genius (Percy is still really smart though just in a different way). BUT COME ON THEYRE ALSO SUPER SIMILAR!! A kid from New York with got special abilities they can use to defeat monsters. Having to balance being a normal teenager and having to fight monsters with no control over when and where (the school meeting scene in the movie reminded me of Percy so much). Not being able to tell normal people about their abilities. Discovering that there are more people like them with these abilities shortly after discovering said abilities. Finding a new sense of belonging with these people like you but not quite being like them either. Being betrayed by one of the few people you felt close to (Aaron and Luke). Being one of the most powerful of the people like you but still treated like a kid and not being let known as much as you want to know. It turning out you’re actually not meant to be who you are at all (Miles being an anomaly and Percy being a child of a big three despite them having an oath to not have kids). Having a horrible destiny you’re told you can’t do anything about (Percy’s prophecy they thought meant he was going to die and Mile’s canon events). Their loyalty to the people closest to them and their family. Miles in the entire latter of half of the movie screamed Percy. AND THEIR SENSES OF HUMOR!!!! You could give Mile’s jokes to Percy and vice versa and it would sound perfectly in character and they both use it as a way to break the tension and shows the really quick-witted way they look at the world.
Now their dynamic together. They both got that sweet awkward teenagers that care a lot about each other and are clearly in love but won’t admit it. They miss each other a lot and understand each other in a way nobody else does. They trust each other with their lives. Gwen and Annabeth always trusting Miles and Percy despite being hurt and betrayed by others before. Gwen joining the spider-society before Miles and having to keep secrets just like Annabeth has been at camp half-blood for a lot longer than Percy and not being able to tell him everything. Both Gwen and Annabeth are therefore put in a position of more experience and trust from the leaders in juxtaposition to Miles and Percy who know the least out of everyone and is constantly trying to gain the trust Gwen/Annabeth already have. Annabeth and Gwen also know something about Percy and Miles they can’t tell him (Gwen knowing Miles is an anomaly and Annabeth knowing Percy’s prophecy that heavily implies he’s gonna die). Percy and Miles as someone with a good parent/parents talks to Annabeth/Gwen about their dads and they open up about it. The slight jealousy element with Hobie and Gwen reminded me of the jealousy elements within Percabeth, both a tiny bit with Luke but also Rachel if Rachel would’ve been Annabeth’s friend/potential love interest and not Percy’s (the Hobie thing is a bit less intense than the Rachel thing though but still the roles Hobie and Rachel fulfill in regards to the main relationship is similar in that also Rachel was someone for Percy to feel normal around and being in Hobie’s dimension was a place Gwen could stay that wasn’t just headquarters also Rachel and Hobie would get extremely well along you can’t change my mind).
I ALSO NEED TO POINT OUT BECAUSE I CANT STOP THINKING ABOUT IT PERCY PRINTING OUT A PICTURE OF ANNABETH TO HAVE IN HIS NOTEBOOK BECAUSE HE MISSES HER IS THE NON-ARTIST EQUIVALENT OF MILES DRAWING A MILLION SKETCHES OF GWEN!!
#i can’t stress enough how much this has been occupying my brain#is this a bit too niche?#maybe#do I care?#No#also Gwen leaving spider-society and getting a team to help Miles made me so sad because it reminded me of Percy being missing#Miles Morales is a Percy Jackson fan and Percy Jackson is a Miles Morales fan change my mind#while writing this I thought about Spider-men’s godly parents and too many of them are Apollo’s#spiderverse spoilers#across the universe#spiderman#miles morales#gwen stacy#percy jackson and the olympians#pjo#Percy Jackson#Annabeth Chase#Percabeth#there are so many more possible comparisons#not big on shipping but this has to be said

Things, people and topics I have or have had a hyperfixation on with little to no explanation, an ongoing list:
Boku no hero academia - The characters and how they interact. I could not care less about canon.
Harry Potter - Fuck JK.
DC - I started watching Arrow without knowing it was a multiverse nor that it was DC. Fell fast and fell hard.
Batfam - Do not confuse with DC. Again, I could not care less about canon.
Jason Todd and Tim Drake.
Criminal minds - I have watched the 15 seasons. Five times and counting. In several languages, for shits and giggles.
Spencer Reid.
BTS - this hyperfixation ended around 2019 but I still know the fan chant by heart.
Stray Kids - my freaking MOM got me into SKZ. Now I have a tattoo of a compass and would sell an organ (mine or otherwise) to meet Bang Chan.
Korean convenience store TikTok compilations
Cleaning TikTok compilations
Fridge/pantry restock TikTok compilations
Desk/stationery organization TikTok compilations
Percy Jackson - I read books 1-10 and I'm too scared to read the rest because if I start then they'll end and I don't want it to end.
The Maze Runner - Intense but short lived hyperfixation. The movies still sting.
The Hunger Games - It's been an on-and-off hyperfixation since the books first came out. I've read them 5 times in Spanish and English. Every time feels like the first.
Snakes.
Swords and knives.
Gravity Falls.
The Folk of the Air - I would sell my soul to both Cardan and Jude and would give literally anything to read it for the first time again.
Sanrio.
Spy x Family.
Spiderman - Specifically Tom Holland's Peter Parker and itsv's Miles Morales.
Danganronpa.
Yuri!!! On Ice - where the hell is Ice Adolescence Mappa. Where are my emotional support gays.
Genshin Impact - not anymore and the mere thought of playing again makes me shiver. I was really really close to developing a gambling problem with the gacha.
The Promised Neverland.
Stiles Stilinski - not Teen Wolf, not Dylan O'Brien. Stiles.
Six: The Musical and Heathers: The Musical - Putting them together because it's not the musicals or the stories themselves, rather three or four songs I listen to on repeat for hours every couple of months and then forget exist.
Big Hero 6.
Fullmetal alchemist.
This list is not over.
#adhd#autism#hyperfixation#AuDHD#yes I've hyperfixated on all of these things#no I don't know how or why either#Rambles

Rambling to thoughts get off my chest
I’m starting to have to accept the fact some of my friends do not see representation in the same way I do.
I have two friends who are also PJO fans and they had a more negative reaction to Annabeth being cast with a black actress. (One of them is black btw). I reacted positively. I think it’s cool and potentially great representation. I’ve also seen some compelling arguments on Tiktok by some black female creators I follow.
My friends are Neurodiverse and they like familiarity, they’re nostalgic (same here), and sometimes it’s difficult to convince them of new ideas or to change ideas or see things from a different perspective. One of them really thinks in terms of black and white. It’s good or bad.
Sometimes it’s frustrating for me personally to see something and be hype for it and they’re either ambivalent or completely opposed. They like the familiarity of blonde grey eyed Annabeth Chase. This live action adaptation probably isn’t meant for them exactly and will probably pull in new readers of PJO which is awesome. Also the new show could address a lot of criticism and aspects that didn’t age well within the Percy Jackson universe. They don’t always see it that way.
Whenever someone argues forced diversity my red flags go off in my head to approach subject with caution because forced diversity has just become a trigger into my head of someone’s going to say some kind of Anti-SJW shit where it’s just some misogynistic echo chamber slogan where some guy on the internet had a problem with a woman existing in a movie/video game/comic or insert thing here. Most of the time when someone makes the forced diversity argument it’s an inarticulate and inaccurate portrayal of what feels like the root of the problem. The problem that is capitalism and commodification of social justice as clout.
Like yeah, diversity should be done well but like we can’t make impossible Goldilocks standards for creators for a black woman to exist in a universe, or make up an in universe reason why a minority is here. The female character can’t be a virgin but she can’t be a whore, she’s too nice but she can’t be too mean. She’s a mary sue and skilled at everything or she’s useless and does nothing for the plot. None of these arguments work with each other but I hear them all the time for the same characters.
I agree raceswapping certain characters is a bad idea because sometimes it’s very important to who they are as a character. Like bad idea to make Mulan a white person. However, I also feel sometimes it’s a missed opportunity if you change a white person into POC and part of their thematic journey or character arc involves oppression sometimes in certain contexts if would be proper and make the story deeper if you included that new aspect. Not every POC has to address racism as a systemic problem. Just like how not every queer person has to have a coming out plot line. I understand why some people want there to feel like effort and care was put into representation.
Some people feel like that can only be done with new characters. Like the Stan Lee approach of maybe not have Peter Parker be black but hey we got Miles Morales. Yeah that’s true in some scenarios but it feels like drawing a boundary, like this invisible line, where POC can’t have certain characters. You can’t have my toy go make your own. Tries to make own but doesn’t get funding, marketing, or attention it deserves. You can’t really replace Peter Parker with Miles Morales cause Miles will always be associated with Peter but Peter won’t have to be associated with Miles.
IDK it all gets so complicated so fast. IDK solutions or how to feel about all this stuff. I just try and understand how I feel about things, how other people feel about it, and self-reflect whether or not I need to change or add to my opinion on how exactly we can make better stories.
One way is to dismantle capitalism.
Other ways are varied and will always differ between people. *sigh* I’ll just do my thing and they’ll do their thing in the end.

🤹♂️ and 🚑 please!
🤹♂️- what’s your hogwarts house? sort the members into their houses
tbh, i’m not a hp fan at all! i never got into the books or movies. i was however, a voracious percy jackson fan, so forgive me if i sort them by their godly lineage instead. (for the record, i’m daughter of hestia, much like yongbok!)
chan is son of zeus. no questions asked + none needed answering. he’s the hero. the child of lightning, the kid with his name on the sword. prophecy + power + destiny + fate. cut him open, and he bleeds gold. next.
minho is the son of hera. clever, sharp as a blade. mouth full of teeth, a weapon of his own. underhanded, cunning. cold as ice, a fortress that cannot be breached. but slip between the cracks in his walls and his love is tough and barbed and forever.
changbin is the son of ares. the war-mongerer, yes, the fighter and the soldier, yes. but the guardian as well. the protector. the defender. loyal, proud, tough as nails, strong as the pull of the planets and resolute as the dying sun, staining the ocean red.
hyunjin is the son of hades. what else, who else, could have birthed such a monstrous and beautiful thing? hyunjin is born from hell, his blood is thick with it. when he dances, he wakes up the demons inside him, the ghosts and the dead and terrible and terrifying things lying dormant within.
jisung is the son of poseidon. there is no authority that can tame the sea, no force on earth that overpowers the will of the tides. so is jisung, child of storm and sea, the earth-breaker with the ocean in his blood. try your hand at tying him down and you’ll find out just how terrible and unfathomable water can really be.
yongbokie is the child of hestia. goddess of the hearth, of the home. of the soft, of the kind, of the empathetic. not the sun, not the center of the universe, but goddess of the ever-burning embers of family, connection and bond. of love, of all the many little ways it is our greatest strength and our greatest undoing.
seungmin is the son of athena. wise, stubborn, clever, and brave. the children of athena never enter the history books, for they are the ones who write them. they are the fate-defiers, the reckless devotees to the capacity of humankind, dauntless in the face of authority or greater power.
jeongin is the son of hermes. quick-witted, fast-footed. fleet and sharp and joyful. the guide, the diplomat, the unbiased voice of reason. young and so easily overlooked, yet he is the uniter, the grounding force. the kid who can always find the way back home, no matter how dark or twisted the path gets.
🚑- imagine ot8 in the hunger games and order them from first to die to winner.
ok for the record, if skz were put into the hunger games, they would definitely do everything in their power to take the games out with them, because that’s just who they are and who they’ve always been. they are rebellion and revolution. but that’s not all that fun, so here’s my other answer:
chan dies first. i know, i know. “he’s the hero!” yeah, yeah. he’s got a big heart and a blind spot seven miles wide for strays. he’s not cynical enough, not cold enough. he’d get a knife in his back from his own teammate. either that, or he’d take himself out because he’s too moral to take another life.
jeongin goes next. sorry, jeongin. but he’s too young + he’s not clever enough to outsmart the others. i think he’d hang on because people like an underdog, but not long enough.
yongbok. yongbok is sweet, but he’s also kinda oblivious and pretty dumb. i imagine he tries to hide himself away from the whole thing + falls into a hole or something.
hyunjin dies because he’s a big baby and too sensitive and also really accident-prone. he makes it half-way because he’s a fan-favorite and gets about a million dollars of gifts. when he dies, it’s his own damn fault.
changbin makes it to the top four because he’s a fucking tank. no offense, but changbin could snap just about any other idol in half. he doesn’t win because he’s also too good to want to. he takes out everyone he doesn’t think deserves to win, and then he probably lets himself get taken out.
i really don’t know who would win out of minho, seungmin, and jisung. despite how he comes off, jisung is a little bit of a genius. he’s really, really fucking smart, and he’s really really good at playing games. but minho and seungmin are smart too. minho would probably win just because out of all eight of them, he’s probably the coldest. the least likely to care about the weight of his soul, the moral hellscape of taking another life. minho is a survivor, and he’s not afraid to do what needs to be done.
#leave it to me to turn an emoji ask game into essay answers#u guys love it tho don't u#anons#replies#rambles

*flops down on sofa*
*exhales*
Tumblr gives me a lot of wild shit every now and again. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's hilarious, sometimes it's disheartening. And then yesterday came along and gave me the one-two punch of:
Captain Marvel being dolled up by the Russos instead of a jacket, S.H.I.E.L.D baseball cap and a Nine Inch Nails shirt, which is how she should be (not gonna talk about this, just want it out there that I'm pissed about it)
One Day At A Time being cancelled
ODAAT I'm gonna kind of touch on because it's not really what I want to talk about, but it did help me finalize the words for what I do, and that's capitalism in entertainment.
The most annoying goddamn trend in filmmaking (and of course in TV and Netflix/Prime originals) is companies caring more about their bottom line and less about making good content, and yeah I know this dead horse isn't just beaten, it's thrown into an active supervolcano but it really pisses me off and it's why I hate the new Star Wars stuff (well OK hate is a bit strong but they're uh Not Good) but I'll get to that. What corpos can't seem to get into their bloated skulls is that one cannot exist without the other. You need to put out good, quality content with value so that fans like it so they give you money so they increase your profits so you can make more content and so on. But somewhere down the line some fuckhead went "what if we just pushed out what we have?" and just kinda expected us to not take notice.
Now before the comments section gets all hot and bothered because I know some people on this site don't have the gift of reading comprehension, I know profits are important, I'm saying when companies shun good filmmaking for more money, they get lazy and all they can think about is profit and not how they make that profit, they don't care at all about using that money to make more good, valuable content.
One Day At A Time
I've never watched One Day At A Time but the fact Netflix just outright cancelled it knowing damn well what it meant to the people the characters are representing is just disgusting. And they have the fucking audacity to blame it on the viewership? I've seen hundreds of artworks, gifs and a video clip here and there of this show. I've seen precisely one (1) meme of 13 Reasons Why and that is literally it. I'm not following the tags for either. Plus, #saveODAAT has, last I checked, 350k tweets on trending or thereabouts?
So obviously the viewership isn't the problem, it's the racism and homophobia of cancelling a Spanish (? - again, never seen it), LGBT+ focused show that a lot of people quite happily and positively connect with when a crap show about suicide and Friends gets to stay on. It's just ugh. Cancelling a show like this then paying something like $100mil to keep Friends. I was going to expand on the shitty capitalism here but tbh that's it, Netflix are making bad decisions and like I say, I'm only going to touch on it because it's not the main part.
Star Wars
Go watch the original trilogy and it's clear George Lucas was trying to create and do. He was trying to make art. The key difference between that and modern SW to me is BB8. Look at C3PO and R2D2 and already you can see they belong. C3PO is a translator droid and I'm not sure what exactly R2's job description is but it's obvious he does some kind of pilot assistance for X-Wing fighters. I never understood people who said R2 never did anything, because they obviously haven't seen Star Wars. You get that this is an R2 unit, right? Like, there's more than one out there and they have a job they were specifically built to do, it's just this one particular R2 unit who had to carry the message? Anyway, I'm derailing. R2 and C3PO have functions and they're clearly not new, they've been used for a long time. Then you look at BB8 and instantly it's like "this is a toy. This so called character was designed to sell toys". And then he was. He's a toy, he's on bags, notebooks, pens, clothes, everywhere. Disney is less concerned about making a Star Wars movie and more about making money off of the Star Wars name.
Into The Spider-Verse VS YA Movies
YA movies tend to suck because they were adapted from books and we all know how that pans out but the reason I'm using YA books specifically is because my mind jumped to The Hunger Games. I couldn't tell you a single fucking thing that happens in those movies. They're so dull and dead and forgettable and the characters are borderline unlikeable but you know which one I do like? Catching Fire, for one reason and one reason only: Jena Malone as Joanna Mason. Save for Haymitch, she's the only character I liked because those two are the only characters with any kind of charisma or life to them. They made an at most halfway decent attempt overall at recreating some otherwise really great books and they made a big show out of it, hiring some pretty well known names. And I'm not disparaging their performances, it was just what I call, ever since Suicide Squad came out, the Harley Quinn effect, in which good actors get given a good character and perform them really well and, through no fault of their own, fuck it up because the character was written poorly and no matter how well they act, if the script doesn't change, the performance will always be shit. The same for Divergent. And Percy Jackson. And Fault In Our Stars.
Then outside all of that you have Perks Of Being A Wallflower which is just a great, heartwarming movie because the characters feel like people and the brightness isn't turned way the fuck down in post and you actually want to be invested, and they're not afraid to have a colour palette beyond a splash of pink here and blue there and red there. Plus, Ant-Man as an English teacher. THEN you go watch Spider-Verse and oh hey. I can actually see the movie now. And I mean see it. They do not slack off when it comes to visuals. Even by animation's standards, everyone is so expressive and alive and... animated. Sorry, I couldn't get a better word but they are! When you look at Miles in comparison to Katniss in terms of writing and performance, the difference is just startling. The only times I can think of where Katniss shows any kind of emotion in the first movie is when she slams the knife in the table and Rue's funeral and I had to think about that. Without thinking for Miles, already I've got "who's Morales?", the scene where Uncle Aaron teaches him the shoulder touch, the scene where Miles spray paints in the subway, that scene in the alley, the moment in Olivia's office when he just freezes after she says she can't wait to watch Peter in immense pain Like That and made all the wlws melt in their seats. You get the idea. So what's the point for this section? Well, as simply as I can put it, Hunger Games was made with money, for money. Spiderverse was made with love, for love. Spiderverse cared about people who read comic books and paid more than enough tribute to the art forms people think of as lesser for no goddamn reason other than elitism and proved for the thousandth time that it is something that can be used in filmmaking. They were trying to make art. Hunger Games and most other YA novel movie adaptations saw a preestablished fan base they could exploit for money. They were trying to make money.
Rambo
This was a weird one, yeah. Don't worry I was confused too when it popped into my head. I saw the original Rambo a while back and what I liked about it (and Apocalypse Now) is it wasn't a war film where the USA charge in and hooray everything's all right, this movie grabs your shirt and says "hey. Vietnam did something to these guys and they're not OK. Probably they'll never be OK". Then I watched the Rambo reboot that came out in like 2011 or something and I remember thinking "OK so now he's just this dude? Who lives in Thailand... And what, that's it?" There was no scene to show his psychological state today. Nothing to acknowledge his PTSD. They just thought "hey! Let's make Rambo but this time, just give him guns and and yelling and spray some blood!" The reason I kind of ended this train of thought quickly is because I realised that, let's be real, the main body of Rambo's audience just want to see Sly Stallone kill some fools. But yeah, the fact that they just ignored John's mental state in place of mega violence is such a glaringly obvious move to just appeal to violent teenage boys.
The Auteur
My favourite director is Wes Anderson and my favourite movie is The Grand Budapest Hotel (though Panos Cosmatos seems to be eyeing these titles with Beyond The Black Rainbow and Mandy, I haven't watched them yet). Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee, Wes Anderson, auteurs always stand out even though their movies are all the same, and I think the reason they're so successful is because that specific style is so much better than most other mainstream cinema. I'm not saying that those other movies are bad, I love them and will watch them again and again but I'm saying Wes Anderson could make a short movie and it would be better than most Marvel movies put together (don't talk to me about Captain Marvel, I haven't seen it yet. Gonna see it this Sunday). No matter what you think of these directors, you can instantly tell the difference between these movies that they care about and the passion and hard work they put in and Disney pumping out their 400th reboot.
It Keeps Working
You guys wanna know the thought that keeps me up at night? Someday they're going to make a Fortnite movie. You guys wanna know why it keeps me up at night? Because it's going to be popular. Yeah, obviously not at the box office, because it'll be a videogame movie and those are worse than book movies, but it will be popular for no apparent reason. And what pisses me off is that Fortnite's popularity is only because of the battle royale mode, which has now essentially become synonymous with dying franchises and it just adds another layer to the lack of creative effort and the movie will just be Hunger Games with guns. Exactly the same as what I said at the start of this rant, there's a really noticeable shift from making content to jumping on whatever bandwagon is passing by because you know it'll make you money. Yeah, you have to spend money to make money but that doesn't mean you get complacent in what you spend your money on or if you spend money at all because when you cut corners, consumers can see that shit.
Anyway I'm done complaining thanks for having the willpower to pay attention to my dumb opinions.

So, I’m being that person that’s reading fic without having previous knowledge of the actual story/show, and now I’m curious - where does one find Shadowhunters. I’m only one or your fics in and I’m curious? I ran out or Percy Jackson ones (that didn’t require hella digging on your page) and I just wanna know where to watch this. also, any other fandoms you think I should look into? You seem to have great taste in books/TV so. (Already in the Voltron Fandom)
Well, Shadowhunters is available on Netflix, so you’ll find it there. ;)
And other fandoms you should look into...? Shesh, that could not be phrased broader if you tried. *laughs*
I dunno what you enjoy. Quite clearly, you already got PJatO covered already too.
I don’t know how caught up on animated movies you are, but I am loving the shared universe between Rise of the Guardians/How to Train Your Dragon/Brave/Tangled/Moana/Big Hero 6, so any of those movies that you haven’t seen yet. Also recommendable the Dragons tie-in cartoon series. Personally, I really loved that.
I feel like Marvel is one of those things you don’t even need to mention because literally everyone is already in it, but it’d also be wrong not to mention it. If you like cartoons, I’d particularly recommend Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Avengers Assemble, Ultimate Spider-Man and X-Men Evolution. Though the newest iteration of Spider-Man is also quite good, I really love Miles Morales!
Miraculous Ladybug - also definitely a recommendation! The cartoon is awesome and if I wouldn’t be currently already drowning in my still relatively new and shiny obsession of Shadowhunters, I would have already added to that fandom too. It is on my list of things I want to write for though.
And, on the matter of cartoons - not so much fandom, because I can’t recommend what I don’t know, I just watch the show and don’t engage in the fandom - you and everyone you know should watch DuckTales. It’s such a ducking great reboot. It’s amazing and awesome and totally worth the watch.
TV show wise my first recommendation is and always will be Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you haven’t seen it, go and watch it. Everybody should have seen Buffy.
Wynonna Earp is a different kind of fantasy - more in the Buffy/Shadowhunters direction of demon hunters. But it’s really great?
If you’re into fantasy, which you must be to some degree if you like PJatO and want to give Sh a chance, GO WATCH The Magicians! It is a mindblowingly brilliant fantasy show. Such good writing. Such good characters and development. Lots of LGBT representation. It’s so good.
Once Upon a Time, if you like Disney movies. I love this show a lot? It amazes me with how it made me ship... literally... all.. the... things...?? All the straight main couples? They’re all set up so beautifully that even I can’t not ship it.
On the matter of fantasy but in a slightly different direction, also Teen Wolf, though... it’s a mixed bag? I love the show a lot but I’d legit cut 6B out of it and think it’d be a far more enjoyable watch if it just ended at the finale of 6A.
And if you’re into musicals, go and definitely watch Smash and Galavant. The first being a musical about a musical - like, the production of a musical. With a great cast and all. The latter being a silly fairy tale kinda parody type that I hold very dear, though beware that one got canceled after 2 seasons (still worth the watch though! Some things are, even if they never got concluded).
If you hold any love for heist things at all, you need to watch Leverage. If you hold a lot of love for heist things like I do, you also gotta watch Hustle and Imposters. I love a good heist.
Then there’s the genre of “Oh! Shiny artifacts that are actually magical!”, which is a genre I love a lot - and if you do too, then I gotta recommend Relic Hunter, The Librarians and Warehouse 13 to you.
Also gotta recommend my current obsession and that is Lost in Space. I finished the first and so far only season (but it has been renewed for a second season! So no worries there!) two days ago... and kind of started rewatching it today?? It’s awesome. If you like scifi that goes into space (which I assume you do if you like Voltron) and if you love strong “family means no one gets left behind” stories. Also there’s a great charming guy with a pet-chicken.
A good scifi show you shouldn’t miss out on is Sense8. It’s? So? Good? Brilliant writing, wonderful characters, looots of LGBT rep. Though, fair warning: Give it some time. I have yet to meet someone who got into it before episode 3. Due to the scale of this, it takes some time before they introduce the world and characters properly - but once they do, it’ll completely suck you in.
And lastly, I mean, Doctor Who is like a given to any respectable scifi fan, but just like Marvel, you gotta include it.
So, yeah, long list because I don’t know what kind of genres or things you enjoy. If you narrow down your tastes more, I can give more specific recommendations, but yeeeah those are the top things that spring to my mind when it comes to recommendations.

Awesome Moms of Science Fiction and Fantasy
https://www.denofgeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/harry-potter-movies.png?resize=400%2C400
Fantasy tends to be a genre of dead mothers and wicked stepmothers. Perhaps this shouldn’t be a surprise since modern stories often draw on generations of fairy tales and retellings with absent moms. Yet when the mothers are part of the story, they frequently function solely in their parental role, without an indication of their own personhood beyond that. So for Mother’s Day, I wanted to create a list of some of science fiction and fantasy’s (SFF) amazing moms. We may not get to see the lives of these moms on screen or on the page, but we’ve got the clues to know that they are their own people—and that makes them realer mothers.
Laurel Lightfoot
I’ve already written about what I loved about Pixar’s Onward as a gamer, but my first response to the film really came as a mother. Laurel Lightfoot, a single mom who has been raising two boys since her husband died 16 years earlier, doesn’t hesitate for a second to charge into danger when she thinks her boys are in trouble. While there’s a classic Mama Bear element that emphasizes her mom-ness, there’s also the fact that she picks up a giant sword and goes head to head with a dragon.
I watched the film thinking “I want to be the kind of mom who does that.” Part of the reason Laurel’s in shape enough to go dragon-slaying is that she does her own workouts in the morning and she’s got a mean ogoshi (hip throw) that she utilizes early on. She obviously still loves the husband she lost, but she’s moved on and is in a long-term relationship. At the end of the movie, she goes out for a girl’s night, wielding a battle ax. As a mom character, she’s got plenty of personhood beyond her role as a mom—and all of that comes together to a high degree of awesome.
Queen Ramonda
Being the mother of the Black Panther can’t be easy. Being the mother of two Black Panthers, as happens to Queen Ramonda in a recent run of comics set in Wakanda (Shuri has taken on the Black Panther mantle twice), has to be even harder.
While there’s never a doubt that Queen Ramonda takes the back seat to her children, she’s clearly got a backbone of steel. In the MCU, when Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) wins in ritualistic combat against T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Angela Bassett’s Queen Ramonda, along with her companions, brave Jabari land to gain allies in taking back Wakanda. In the first issue of Nnedi Okorafor’s excellent run on Shuri, Queen Ramonda brings back The Elephant’s Trunk, a group of women who would secretly guide Wakanda from behind the scenes. Queen Ramonda is always there to support her children, but she’s also always there to support her country, and to make sure that Wakanda stays strong.
Molly Weasley
For the majority of the Harry Potter series, Molly Weasley (Julia Waters in the movies) serves as the good-mom vision of what Harry could have had. She dotes on her children. She supports her husband, even when she thinks he’s made the wrong choices (flying car???). But there’s a moment at the end of the series when Molly Weasley unleashes, and we see that, as well as being a maternal presence, she’s also a witch packing a whole lot of heat in her wand. While there was a debate back when the last book came out that her magic was wasted as a housewife, there’s also an element of choice there: Who says that having powerful magic as a mom isn’t important?
Captain Callisto
While Miles from Tomorrowland may not be a television show on a lot of adult radars, it has the rare distinction of having the mom be the captain of a family run ship. Captain Callisto works for the Tomorrowland Transit Authority, and it’s her job that takes Miles and the rest of the family all over the galaxy. She’s the final word when it comes to decisions for any mission—but she’s also mom, and she’s there to help her children navigate their own place in the universe.
Janet van Dyne
The original Wasp has gone through a number of incarnations in the comics, and not all of them were great moms. Michelle Pfeiffer’s recent MCU incarnation, where it’s the hope of seeing her daughter again that allows her to communicate from the Quantum Realm, that works best for me as a character who is both all-mom and all-person.
First, Janet’s work as an agent for SHIELD led her to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the world—not something mom characters are always allowed to do. When she returns from the Quantum Realm, she’s got even more abilities, something I hope she’ll get to explore with the help of her family. But even while she’s a superhero, she still calls her daughter Jellybean with so much love, you can see it radiate from her—even when she’s doing it from inside the body of Scott Lang.
Sally Jackson
One of the guiding beacons of light through the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” middle grade series by Rick Riordan is Percy’s mother, who is the one person who loves him unconditionally. Although for the entire first book, Percy’s motivation is that he thinks his mother is dead, it turns out the gods were just playing havoc with mortals, and by the end of the novel, not only does she return to life, but she also reclaims her own personhood from an abusive relationship.

As the novels progress, Sally only ever appears in the background, but you can tell there’s growth and development for her off stage as she pursues her dream career, and as she becomes romantically involved with a really solid boyfriend. When Percy tries to get them both to safety late in the series, the pair enthusiastically join in the battle to save the world—which shows that parents don’t have to get left at home to do nothing while their hero kids battle against incredible odds.
Joyce Summers
While Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer actually does stay at home for the most part, she also stepped up to the plate when needed. She and Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) had a tumultuous relationship, and she actually doesn’t take it well at all when Buffy’s Slaying comes out, but eventually, she becomes a supportive figure in Buffy’s life, as well as a center of normalcy in the midst of weirdness.
Joyce serves in a supportive mothering role to other characters in the series—including in one heart to heart with Spike (Jason Marsters)—and loves Buffy’s supernatural sister, Dawn, despite having had her memories rewritten in order to accept her. While in many ways Joyce fits into the category of the mom who only ever gets to be a mom, the series frequently hinted at aspects of her life beyond being mother to the Slayer, and her loss was felt deeply by the characters after her (natural) death.
Muneeba Khan
Unlike Joyce Summers when she discovered Buffy’s secret identity, Muneeba Khan, mother of fan favorite Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, drops another kind of bomb when Kamala fesses up: she already knew. While Kamala has been running around, hiding her superhero activities for months, Muneeba figured out what was going on and quietly supported Kamala’s activities.
While frequently Muneeba’s role in Ms. Marvel has been as a parental figure to avoid, rebel against, or seek out for solace and comfort, there are few moments or parent-child interactions in comics that have hit me as deeply as that reveal in Ms. Marvel Vol. 3 #18. It’s both the ultimate in realizing that your mom always knows what you’re up to—and an ultimate showing of love.
Martha Kent
Moms aren’t defined solely as the person who gives birth to a child. Some of the greatest moms in SFF are adoptive, or found family. One such mom who consistently reassures with her presence is Martha Kent, who raised the orphaned Kal-El as her own. But she’s not one to just sit back and let the world happen around her. On Smallville, not only did Annette O’Toole’s Martha serve on both the Kansas State Senate and the U.S. Senate, but she also took on the mantle of the Red Queen to protect Clark’s secret identity. That’s a lot for any mom to take on!
Granma Ben
In the excellent Bone comic series by Jeff Smith, Granma Ben emerges as one of the coolest grandmothers around—early on, readers find out she’s the reigning champion of the annual cow race, and that’s long before they realize how much of her life she had to hide in order to keep her granddaughter Thorn safe.
She’s the only mother that Thorn ever knows, and she’s continually heroic in the way she stands up to the evils of the world around them, serving as a role model for Thorn—and Fone Bone—as they navigate the evils Granma Ben accidentally helped set into motion.
Alfred Pennyworth
Sometimes, the role of mother falls beyond the neat boxes celebrated on the card-giving holiday, and I think one such character who consistently serves as a mother to a broken superhero who badly needs one is Alfred Pennyworth.
Both as Bruce Wayne and Batman, the hero relies on Alfred to manage things. Alfred also regularly serves as Bruce’s moral compass, particularly in the Christopher Nolan films where he’s played by Sir Michael Caine. Alfred loves Bruce unconditionally, even when he’s making the wrong decisions, and he’s there to help Bruce be a better person—which is one of the best ways to describe the job of a mom.
