April 10th , 2016 // Day 101 of 366 Subject: Micheal Joseph Waltz Age: 46 Years Old Born: Martinez CA Currently Resides: Chico CA Occupation: Advertising Consultant // Musician // Husband // Father
“I think being away from town (and) living away from town that you don’t go there. I think being amongst change as it’s happening it’s harder to see. And so when you’re away from it you come in and you’re suddenly like; I certainly have compassion and I don’t want to pass judgment on people who are homeless or mentally ill or anything like that. Probably more so the city itself as the entity for not figuring out on how to help people. Because really I see that as the failure is that they’re not being helped and while they might be asking for change for a burrito, or get a beer, or whatever they’re going to be doing I believe it’s the city’s job to figure out,’Ok well there’s a problem’, and not just,’I’m gonna to hit them over the head with a club. Or I’m gonna to get them a bus ticket out of town.’ That’s pushing the problem under the carpet but actually fundamentally dealing with people that have medical problems, they’re sick. They’ve got some problems and you might say that they’re homeless, and yeah they are, but that’s a symptom; That’s not the actual problem. The problem is that they’re destitute or they’ve got some kind of problem.”
“...And when you really learn the story you go kinda go,’Ok, I can see it’. And so perspective on that kind of thing is hard cause you see somebody on the street that’s hurtin. We’re all jut a couple of steps away from that. But if you knew their backstory and you knew the whole story behind it I think it would really help generate a lot more compassion.”
“Having kids, you know, they’re your greatest teachers and I’ve learned so many lessons; it’s hard. I tell my kids now, especially as they’re teenagers, I’ve taken a stance of; look, I’ve never done this. So you gotta cut me some slack and you gotta help me. And when you kind of engage them to like,’look, we gotta go through this together’. Instead me telling you,’Don’t do this. Don’t do that. Better not do this’. I still do that but you’re going to be learning lessons right along with them. I’ve certainly got a bunch of hindsight and I’ve some things I wanna tell about and some things I don’t. And some things I’m like,’Yeah, it’d be better if you didn’t know that for another twenty year’. But I think instilling confidence in them that,’Look, you’re smart. You can figure this out. When you see something you don’t know, always be curious and ask’. And always be learning about stuff and don’t pigeon-hole yourself. And every kid is different; so my oldest, he approaches life in one way. My youngest, completely different. You’re then suddenly changing gears on them. But I would say; be confident. The world is a beautiful place. But It can be an unforgiving place.”
“I find resonance. So being able to resonate with other people. Being able to resonate with a crowd. And when I say resonate I mean to be able to make them come alive. So in a band it’s sort of like that color chart where you have the red and the blue that makes purple; that common area in there. That if I’m in a band with you that I’m going to pull you a little out of your element when I start playing with you and that’s the magic part. And then,’hey! We have a keyboard player’, and we have all these other things going and that creates the fun stuff. Being able to let go of your ego. Being able to find that resonant frequency that makes everybody have fun. The biggest lesson; have fun. Cause if you’re not having fun, it’s no fun. And when you’re having fun then everything falls into place. And if it was up to talent then three guys would be doing the whole deal. It’s really about being able to work with people. Being able to give a little bit and not be so entrenched in opinion and style. And growing; gotta be open to growing.”
“Patience; to have patience with yourself and with your partner. I wake up everyday in love with her and there are times when we go to bed when we’re not necessarily, ya know; when we’re fighting or we have an argument. I mean we’re human beings so mistakes happen. And again, forgiveness. You start from friends that you really connect on much more fundamental level of friendship and you’re honest with each other. And really I think intimacy, true intimacy, not just sex but the ability to cry together, the ability to be vulnerable with somebody, all of that is based on being friends. And that you’re not spiteful. That you’re not jealous. That you’re not any of those other little things that kind of climb in when you’re not giving the friendship what it really takes. It’s important to be fun. It’s important to be romantic. I’m romantic completely. I’m probably too romantic sometimes. But giving it the time and energy of like,’Let’s go do something together.’ It’s not about the band stuff. it’s not about work. It’s certainly about the kids but even then it’s still gotta be about us. And we’ve been really lucky, and we’ve had tough times, and we’ve had things happen in our family but we’ve been really fortunate. So the friendship and really starting from a fundamental point of what you call soul mates or whatever that I love being around her. I can speak for myself that she has this magic about her that is contagious. In the jewelry business and her art; her art resonates with me. Her soul does too.”
“We’re real lucky; we have a large open space behind us with a lot of old oak trees and being into poetry I’m always looking for metaphors in life. I always kind of look at these old oaks trees as kind of if that was a picture or a map you see a family tree kind of thing. Picture that as somebody’s life and it helps you kind of relate especially in times where I was dealing with my dad dying, and friends dying, and you know forty six years is enough to have plenty of people you know pass away and you know, life happens. But I always like looking at it as you see trees that,’Wow, that pine tree leaned all the way over there. I wonder why. What drove it to do that? Did it want to?’ And you start getting deeper into it. But it’s a great place to out and be quiet. And it’s amazing how quiet it is up here. In the dark it’s like being on the ocean; nothing going on. But I see these trees as metaphors for people and that it helps you kind of relate back to folks you have in your life that might be going through something and you kind of sit there and go,’Ok. Well this apart of life’, even your own life to think that,’How am I going to grow.’”
“I consider myself not the luckiest man in the world but I’ve certainly been fortunate and lucky. And there have been plenty of times where I couldn’t have been and I was. I’ve got a lot of beautiful friends. That’s one thing about Chico I’ll say about the community and what I admire about your project is that you see all of these people; some of them you don’t know. A lot of them you don’t know. But a lot of them are people I kind of know. Chico is the kind of place that you can live here for fifteen years and not meet somebody that has lived in Chico for fifteen years which is amazing to me. But it’s also like this vortex in time when I moved here; it’s like all of sudden it’s fives years and you’re like,’Whoa. I’m still here.’ But it’s this wonderful little place; it’s beautiful. It’s hot as hell. But it has a great scene, a great community and I’m really lucky to be here. There isn’t any other place; Well, come late july where it’s one hundred ten degrees I could be in Petaluma or Santa Cruz. But other then that, I love living here and I certainly have a beautiful place.”
Mike Waltz has been a pillar of the Chico community and music for a long time. His band Electric Circus has spanned three decades and his roots in this town are vast and ever-spreading. I was lucky enough to be invited to his isolated and beautiful home just on the outside of Chico where we got to talking about life, music, love, and poetry. It was pretty nice to escape and be transported to a completely different world. A place that he calls home. A for that I thank him.
It was definitely poetry in motion. Poetry in emotion.
