If you saw the post earlier: I came to a decision on my own oops
Anyway, have a wip!
“Watch it, dwarf. You’re on thin ice,” [Mike] scolds, but it misses any harshness. He’s just glad he’s turned away to hide the grin. “I thought Dustin was the dwarf?”, Holly asks, trying to remember the details of Mike’s extensive DnD monologs. When Mike turns his head to her, she has shifted on her back, legs propped up against the wall and staring at the ceiling. Her face is scrunched up in confusion as she tips her head back and looks at Mike upside down. He feels a little warm in his chest, that she remembered something when the rest of their family tells him to shut up. “He is,” Mike agrees [...]. “But then I can’t be a dwarf.” She sounds so serious that Mike has to stifle a laugh. Whenever Holly sounds that serious it’s better not to laugh at her or to expect something to be thrown in your direction. “Why not? You don’t want to be small?” [...] He turns around to see Holly’s unimpressed face. It seems that Mike is being an idiot again and overlooking an obvious fact. “You're my brother. If you’re a human I can’t be a dwarf.” She crosses her arms, still lying on her back. Her shoes leave a dark streak on Mike’s wall when she let her legs fall onto the bed in a spread that would have Mike grimace. He pretends to think about it, [..] humming loudly as Holly sits up and turns around to face him. “Maybe you’re adopted.” Holly’s mouth falls open, her eyes full of indignance at his betrayal. Mike is lucky for once when he dodges the pillow flying at his face and his grin widens when Holly pouts and throws “Maybe you are adopted” back at his face.
#I really enjoy this fic hehe#Mike and Holly content is important to me#the fact that this fic will just be Mike and Holly running away from danger is so funny to me#I don't even know why but I'm looking forward to writing it#this is what the dnd question was for btw#byler over the garden wall#byler#mike wheeler#holly wheeler#wheeler siblings#stranger things#miwip wednesday

ST5 BTS Teaser Trailer Thoughts Part 1
We got a LOT of content in the teaser trailer so here are my initial thoughts! It looks like we'll be getting a lot of scenes with the original four party members which is exciting!
You can see they’ve clearly been filming at Castle Byers and it looks like we’ll be getting a lot of flashbacks of Will’s abduction and his time in the Upside Down in Season 1. Towards the end of the trailer we see him fall past a large tree with vines on it presumably into the Upside Down. He's wearing the same outfit that he wore in The Vanishing of Will Byers so I'm interested to see if this is a flashback to his time in the Upside Down or a Vecna vision of some sort.
My money's on flashback because when Nancy was in the Vecna vision in Season 4 she remained in her clothes from the present. That being said, we never see Will fall into the Upside Down at any point in Season 1 so I'm wondering if this could be one of Will's escape attempts? Like maybe he climbed a tree to escape the demogorgon or to try and get a better view of where he was?
We see Dustin biking to the cemetary, presumbly to visit Eddie's grave, and then later we see him with some of the guys from the basketball team there. In the basement scene he's got what look like cuts and bruises on his face so it looks like this confrontation gets pretty violent! Not looking forward to that!
We learn from this trailer that in addition to being a fan of New Coke Lucas is also a fan of Dr. Pepper! I like that we got some footage of the Party sitting together at lunch, walking and running down the hallways, and sitting at the picnic table. It looks like we'll be getting back to the OG's this season and I'm here for it!
We see that Dustin is still rocking the Hellfire shirt but Mike has changed up his look! Will’s also got a new look this season and it's about time! He's needed to ditch that bowl cut for awhile! Honestly the show did him so dirty last season. I can't even. I'm also digging Mike's new look! It's more mature and I think that makes sense for his character going into Season 5.
In one of the clips we see Mike and Lucas running down a hallway and at first I thought this was at the high school, but then a friend pointed out that the stripes on the wall are blue and not orange and green. So I think this is either the middle school or the elementary school. Which makes me think they're running to get either Erica or Holly.
We see the characters using radios and atenna equipment a lot in the BTS footage and they appear to be spending a lot of time at the local radio station so I think radio is going to play a very important role this season.

Sandman Universe: Lucifer Suggested Reading Order
Just saw someone make a post about starting points for getting into the Sandman Universe, and I figured that I would come and provide a suggested reading order for those who are interested in hearing more about Lucifer Morningstar!! (my favorite guy. join me. i love him)
Please note that the Lucifer comics are nothing like the Lucifer TV drama from 2016. Expect content that's far more similar to The Sandman -- nothing to do with the LAPD. The comics are far too busy dealing with interplanar wars.
There are three distinct Lucifer runs:
2000-2006 series by Mike Carey
2016-2017 series by Holly Black
2018 series by Dan Watters
All of them take place after The Kindly Ones, aka, the ending of The Sandman, so beware spoilers.
The 5-book collection of Lucifer (2000) adds in additional one-shots that IMO are pretty important for context. The suggested reading order would be:
The Sandman Presents: Lucifer - The Morningstar Option (1999) #1-end (#3)
Lucifer (2000) issues #1-16
Lucifer: Nirvana (one-shot)
Lucifer (2000) issues #17-end (#75)
Lucifer (2016) #1-end (#19)
Lucifer (2018) #1-24 can be read separately at any time
Lucifer (2000) and Lucifer (2016) are intended to be read as a consecutive series. I don't recommend reading 2016 without reading 2000 first. (I did that. I didn't know what was going on)
Lucifer (2018) is not related to either of those, though, and can be read whenever you like. I'm pretty sure you'd understand what's happening as long as you've read up through The Sandman: Season of Mists.
(I'm not exactly sure how the DCU as a whole works, but I am led to believe that the 2000 and 2016 versions are "New Earth" Lucifer and that the 2018 Lucifer is "Prime Earth" / New 52 Lucifer...? In other words, 2018 Lucifer is a rebooted version, and his characterization is quite different from the others.)
Happy reading! Questions/comments/corrections welcome!
ISBNs can be found below the cut.
ISBNs for the 5-book collection which collects the first 4 bulletpoints in order:
9781401240264 9781401242602 9781401246044 9781401246051 9781401249458
ISBNs for the Lucifer (2016) series:
9781401261931 9781401265410 9781401271398
ISBNs for the Lucifer (2018) series:
9781401291334 9781401295721 9781779502353 9781779507556

This isn't like about a ship but I think it's super weird how Mike has no personal conflict, no interest or anything that defines him besides El. It really bothers me how his only importance revolves around a love affair.
For example Nancy (who is his sister) in no season has been alone, her relationship with Steve and her relationship with Jonathan is super important but she also has dreams, aspirations, and personal conflicts. With her they have shown us how she feels about the convenience relationship of his parents, how she cares about his siblings, how she wants to go to certain college and has well-defined everything she wants in his future.
But you're telling me Mike has no problem with his parents' relationship? Or maybe he don't even notice something's wrong? He almost never mentions Nancy or Holly as something really important to him, has no hobbies, nothing.
In the early seasons at least he had this AV club thing, he seemed interested in audiovisual content, he had aspirations to be a writer... But in the following seasons they literally took that away from him, they haven't shown anything that really feels like him and it is very sad that he has become such an empty character.
Even characters like Jason who are totally detestable people have a deeper background and story than even though it makes them quite detestable at least fulfill one purpose, but Mike's purpose is quite replaceable from my point of view. His only personality at this point is being Eleven's boyfriend and even the Duffers can't write that well, making and letting characters outside the relationship be the ones who fix it?
Like, romance is no excuse to put so much aside a character, Lucas for example plays a VERY important role by loving Max and his relationship is much of his arc as a character but he also has aspirations. He has his own own problems such as wanting to fit in and be popular, loves Max and his love is important but at the same time advances individually.
I'd really like to see more about Mike next season, especially because it's the last one and he's a character I'm very fond of for the first two seasons. It's so sad what the Duffers have done to him and even if in Vol. 1 I kinda feel like he was moving a little forward all came back to the same point at the end.
Besides Finn's an excellent actor, I'd like him to be given different things...
I'm grateful that Will can become his own person next season but even him with his short screen time has more development than Mike. Let Mike Wheeler become his own person too pls

YES! OH MY GOSH! THIS!!
This is a response from the below post:
Like, you’re telling me KAREN WHEELER heard that her son hid a whole a** person in their house for a week, who she was told was a Russian spy wanted by the U.S Government, and just…moved on?
Karen saw El’s picture with the shaved head. Maybe they could have played it off as “these are two different people” when El grew out her hair, but Karen has to realize it’s the same person when El steps out of the van at the end of the season. It makes total sense that Karen acknowledges Mike first, because that’s her son, who she probably thought was in a lot of danger. But, nothing for El? I get that the Duffer Brothers can’t show us everything, but this is a really big missed opportunity here. There’s not even a throwaway line referencing it.
I need something to go down between them in Season Five. These are two of the most important women in Mike’s life (along with Nancy and Holly), and I think it would be a really interesting dynamic to explore for El as well. One of her arcs is learning how to be a regular person instead of a lab rat, and part of that life is meeting the parents. We’ve seen Mike with Hopper (and their friendship is adorable), but give me some mother-in-law type content with Karen. I just know she’d treat El like a third daughter. Honestly, Cara Buono is severely underutilized. I love her!
I’m a Wheeler family stan at this point (except for Ted for…obvious reasons).
Thank you, @augustchild for validating my feelings regarding El and Karen!

Holly Jolly
Pairing: Steve x reader or Eddie x reader (I’m not sure yet)
Summary: After the new information you’d decided to meet again in the morning for Operation Mirkwood. You go to see if Jonathan’s okay and cross paths with a stressed Nancy who brings you on her search for Barb.
Tw: Swearing, bullying (Steve smashing Jonathan’s camera)
Word count: 2702
Author’s note: Mastermind is a game for two players. One makes a colour code and the other has about 10 or more chances to guess it.
edited : yes
~~~~~
‘We just tell our parents we have AV Club after school. That’ll give us at least a few hours for Operation Mirkwood.’ Mike looks at all of you as he explains the plan he thought up.
‘You seriously think that the weirdo knows where Will is?’ Lucas’s distrust drips from his voice.
‘Just trust me on this, okay?’ Mike looks at his friend until Lucas nods. ‘Did you get the supplies?’
‘yeah,’ Lucas turns around to grab his stuff from the chair between him and you. ‘Binoculars from ‘Nam. Army knife also from ‘Nam. Hammer, camouflage bandana and…’ he looks around a smug grin on his face. ‘the wrist rocket.’
‘You’re gonna take out the Demogorgon with a slingshot?’ Dustin questions Lucas’s choice of weapon.
‘First of all, it’s a wrist rocket.’ You can’t help but smile at Lucas’s quick defence. ‘And second of all, the Demogorgon’s not real. It’s made up.’
‘We don’t know that.’
‘You seriously believe all this?’ Lucas turns to you now.
‘Well, you saw El close the door with her mind. I mean, why wouldn’t you?’
‘Because it is made up.’ He carefully pronounces every word as if you won’t understand what he’s saying otherwise. ‘But if there is something out there, I’m gonna shoot it in the eye and blind it.’ He acts as if he’s actually shooting a rock at Dustin and the boy flinches away.
‘Okay, Dustin, what did you get?’ Mike sighs, addressing you two.
Dustin turns around to grab his backpack and turns it over to let the content of it fall on the table. All different kinds of candy, chocolate and chips fall out of it.
‘Well, alrighty. We’ve got Nutty Bars, Bazooka, Pez, Smarties, Pringles, Nilla Wafers, apple, Banana and trail mix.’ Dusting begins to list up everything he brought as you look over at the other boys who also glance at you and at each other.
‘Seriously?’ Lucas now questions Dustin’s view on “important supplies”.
``We need energy for our travels. For stamina.’ And the rolls turn. Now it is Dustin getting defensive. These kids never change. ‘And besides, why do we even need weapons anyway? We have her.’ He points at El who has been sitting on the couch since you’ve arrived.
‘She shut one door!’ Lucas exclaims in exhaustion at the mention of her powers.
‘With her mind!’ Dustin raises his voice back. ‘Are you kidding? That’s insane! Imagine all the other cool stuff she could do.’ Dustin walks away from the table and to El.
‘Dustin, what are you doing?’ You quickly follow him.
He grabs Mike’s Star Wars ship and tries to let El make it fly in the air. But the girl just stares at him without doing anything.
‘You can’t just expect her to do whatever you want.’ You say taking the ship from Dustin’s hand and laying it on the coffee table.
Before he can say anything back Mike’s mother calls. ‘Boys! Time for school!’
You sit down at the table as Mike crouches down in front of El.
‘Do you know those power lines? Behind my house. Meet us there, after school. 3:15.’ He gives her his watch so she can know when she’s supposed to come outside.
‘What are you going to do?’ Dustin taps your head to get your attention.
‘I’m staying here. My dad is going to the lab today and as usual was I forbidden to go with him.’
‘Oh, well, that’s good. You can try to get her to open up.’ He whispers looking over at El.
‘We shouldn’t force her.’
‘I would do it.’ He shrugs.
‘Oh, I know you would.’ You smile up at him. He grins back before following Lucas upstairs. Mike closely follows them.
You look over at El. ‘So, anything you would like to do?’
She looks at you. ‘Y/N, right?’
‘Yep, that’s me.’
‘Pretty.’
‘Thank you.’ You smile shyly. ‘So, you want to play a game? Eat? Talk? Watch TV?’
‘What is TV?’
‘You don’t-? Never mind. Come on!’ You stand up waving her over. You walk upstairs and she follows you.
She goes to sit on the chair where Mike’s father always sits as you turn on the TV. ‘I’m just going to go through the channels and you say if you see anything that appeals to you, okay?’
‘Yeah.’
It seems as if it was a commercial break everywhere. ‘We’ll have to wait until the commercial breaks are over.’ You say as you stop at a coca cola commercial.
El sits up and her eyes don’t leave the screen. ‘You like this? I guess it's one of the better commercials.’ You follow her with your eyes as she walks over to the TV and places a hand on the screen. For a moment it seems as if she’s back somewhere else.
‘El? You okay?’ You reach out to touch her shoulder but she snaps out of him and shuts the TV off. ‘Oh, okay. No TV, then.’ You shrug.
She stands up and goes upstairs to the bedrooms. ‘Uhm, El? Where are you going?’ You are quick to follow her. You find her standing in Nancy’s room looking at her pictures.
‘Friends?’ El touches the pictures of Nancy and Barb.
‘Yes, that’s her friend.’
‘You?’ She looks up at you.
‘I’m not really friends with her. I mean we can talk and it’s nice but I don’t know if she sees me as a friend.’
El turns around to face you. ‘Who are your friends?’
‘I’m more of a loner, really. But I could call the boys my friends and Jonathan. The brother of Will. And now you two.’
A small smile crosses her lips at your words. ‘Friends.’
You went back downstairs with her and played some games. You were playing Mastermind to pass time. You used to play this with Jonathan when you would be bored.
You hadn’t talked to him in a while. The last time you saw him was when You went with your father to the Byers after Will’s disappearance. Maybe there was some time to run to the school and see him before he was gone. It wouldn’t take long.
‘Hey, El.’ She was waiting for you to make your colour combination as she looked through one of Mike's comics. ‘I would like to check up on Jonathan. Is that okay?’
‘You’re leaving?’
‘No, no, I’ll come back. I just need to talk to him.’ She nods, turning her attention to the comic. You grab your jacket and call her goodbye before you’re off to the High School.
You waited for a few minutes, leaning against the wall, as the students came running out the building. You spotted Jonathan inside at the lockers. You straighten yourself and walk inside the school.
‘Hey.’ He flinches at the sudden voice next to him. ‘Sorry, ‘just me.’
‘Y/N, hey. What are you doing here?’ He greets you before turning back to his locker.
‘I never could tell you that I’m sorry about what happened. I mean, I can’t imagine how you and your mother must feel.’
He nods, taking the last books out and closing his locker. ‘Thank you.’ He turns around to you. ‘And?’
You feel caught as he smiles a little at your “deer-in-head-lights” look. ‘How did you know I was going to-‘
‘I’ve known you for a few years now. You wouldn’t just come to pity someone.’
‘You got me.’ You chuckle strained. ‘I was going to ask if anything strange has happened? Like anything at all.’
‘Why do you ask?’
‘Just to know. I’m kinda starting my own little investigation.’ As you realise how self-indulged that sounded you quickly add. ‘Because I really want to help but, well, you know my dad. He would rather send me off to Antarctica than have me get round up in all of this.’
Jonathan asks silently if you would follow him outside. You make way for him to pass and take your place at his side. ‘I understand. You don’t have to explain.’
‘Hey Jonathan!’ A voice calls a bit further from you. You both stop and turn around to see who called.
A boy, who you recognise as the king of Hawkins High “Steve Harrington”, is leaning against his car.
‘What’s going on?’ Jonathan asks as he steps closer but keeps his distance.
You cross your arms scanning the group of teens in front of you. Jonathan talked to you sometimes about them. First you have Steve Harrington. Rich family, confident, is only a jerk to the ones who hurt his loved ones. Carol Perkins, big mouth, too much fake confidence, thinks she’s better than the rest. And as the last one, Tommy Hagan, he honestly just creeps you out. It was something about his smile that looked not normal. It was so evil.
‘Nicole here was telling us about your work.’ You look at the second girl. She seemed nice but she looked like the kind that would kill to stay popular.
‘We’ve heard great things.’ Carol makes a chewing sound as she grins.
‘And we’d just love to take a look. You know as…connoisseurs of art.’ Steve shrugs.
You raise your brows at his use of words.
‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ Jonathan awkwardly shifts his weight.
‘Oh no?’ Steve reaches out and grabs Jonathan’s bag.
‘Hey. Please, give me my bag.’ Jonathan tries to grab his back but Steve turns around lightly so he misses.
‘Are you deaf?’ You call him.
‘You have nothing to do with this. Go away.’ Steve tells you as you walk closer.
‘He told you to give him his bag.’ You reach your hand out. ‘Now.’
‘Or what?’ He holds his chin up. ‘You’re gonna get your dad?’
‘I don’t need my dad to accomplish things in life.’ Tommy slaps Steve’s shoulder at that.
‘That hits.’
‘Shut up.’ Steve glances at him. ‘Both of you.’ He looks back at you. He reaches into Jonathan's bag and holds out some pictures.
‘That’s what you want? Some stupid pictures.’ You scoff.
‘Oh, there are not stupid.’ Carol takes the pictures and turns them to you so you can see them. It’s them all in Steve’s pool. You look up at her with a question in your eyes. ‘What about this one.’ She shows the second picture. Steve’s window where Nancy’s standing. Only in her bra.
You glance at Jonathan. You don’t know what that was about but you know that Jonathan had a good explanation for this.
‘Now, she’s quiet.’ Steve scoffs at you.
‘I was looking for my brother.’ Jonathan defends himself.
‘No, no, this.’ Steve points at the pictures. ‘This is called stalking.’
‘What’s going on?’ Nancy’s voice calls from behind you. ‘Y/N, what are you doing here?’
‘Ah, there is the starring lady.’ Tommy cackles.
‘What?’ Nancy looks around the group of you.
‘This creep was spying on us last night.’
‘He was probably going to save this one for later.’ Carol holds out the picture of Nancy to Nancy herself.
‘See, that’s the thing about perverts,’ Steve hands the bag to Tommy who starts searching in it. ‘It’s hardwired into ‘em. You know, they just can’t help themselves. So, we’ll just have to take away his toy.’ Steve holds out his hands so Tommy can lay Jonathan’s camera in it.
‘Steve.’ Nancy tries to stop him.
‘You can’t be serious.’ You step even closer.
‘No, please, not the camera.’ Jonathan begs him.
‘Hey, it’s okay. Here you go, man.’ Steve hands the camera over to Jonathan but lets it fall out of hands a second before Jonathan can grab it.
You and Jonathan reach for it but it falls hard on the concrete ground. You look up at Steve. ‘You’re sick, man.’
‘Oh, I am?’ He asks glancing at the pictures and rips them in pieces.
‘Come on, let’s go. The game’s about to start.’ Tommy laughs, laying his arm around Carol as they leave.
You see Nancy grabbing some pieces as you help Jonathan gather his camera and the other pictures.
‘Hey Nance! Come on.’ Steve calls.
‘I’m sorry.’ She mumbles looking over at you and quickly gets up to join Steve.
You scoff. ‘How can she even be around them.’
‘You shouldn’t have done that.’ Jonathan says as you both stand up. ‘I deserved this. I shouldn’t have done it.’
‘Hey, you don’t deserve any of this. And the fact you already say that what you did was wrong is a sign that you regret doing it.’
You walk with him to his car. ‘About your question earlier.’ Jonathan breaks the silence. ‘Maybe you should talk to my mom. She’s been saying things about Will trying to communicate. I’m worried about her and I think maybe talking to someone other than me might make her leave the topic behind.’
You nod. ‘I’ll come by this evening.’
He nods. ‘Thanks. You need a ride?’ You’d arrived to his car by now.
‘Uhm, no thanks. I’ll walk.’
‘Okay, well, see ya.’
‘Yep.’ You wave as he drives off. You were going to put your headphones back on but stop mid-air as your name’s called.
‘Y/N, wait!’
‘Nancy?’ You turn around to see her waving at you from across the parking lot. She sees you looking and quickly walks over.
‘I’m sorry for what happened.’
‘It’s not to me who you should apologize to. And you also shouldn’t apologize. Your boyfriend has to.’
She nods, smiling a little. ‘Yeah, still I am sorry. Are you helping in the case of Will Byers?’
You were staring at her in shock. Where did that come from? Wasn’t she going to the game? And why does she want to know? ‘I think you don’t know my dad very well. I’m practically forbidden to interfere in it.’
‘But you’re searching for what happened, right?’
You narrow your eyes a little at her. ‘Maybe. Why?’
Nancy explained everything to you on the way to Steve’s house. About the party yesterday. About Barb cutting her hand, her wanting to go home and since then disappearing.
You were silent as she spoke. You could feel she needed to let it all out so you let her.
‘And when I called her parents they said they hadn’t seen her yet. So, that’s why I want to go back to Steve’s house. Maybe we’ll find something there that might help us find Barb.’
‘It has to be the same thing that happened to Will. It’s all too much of a coincidence.’
‘Exactly! I just, I feel like if I should’ve just gone with her she would still be here.’ Nancy cringes into herself.
‘Don’t think like that. Maybe, without knowing it, you saved your life. And if you were also taken who was going to help Barb?’
‘Yeah, maybe, but that doesn’t change that Barb might be in danger because I pushed her to come with me.’
‘Hey, Nance, that’s in the past. Don’t think about it. Only think that we’re trying to get her back.’
She nods, smiling up at you. ‘Thank you.’
‘Any time.’ You smile back.
You arrive at the Harrington’s residence and the first thing you see is a car parked a few meters away. ‘Is that-?’
‘Barb.’ Nancy runs to the car. She bents to look through the window. ‘Nothing.’ She turns to you shaking her head.
‘Come on.’ You walk to the backyard. ‘Maybe she waited here for you and then whatever happened took place.’
‘Why didn’t I hear anything?’
You shake your head as a silent answer. She walks to the woods as you look through the window inside. ‘Gotta admit that their house is fancy.’
‘Y/N?’ You turn around as Nancy calls you. She stands with her back to you, staring into the woods.
‘What?’
‘Come here.’ Worry settles at the sound of her voice. You walk over to her.
‘You’re starting to freak me out. What is it?’
‘I heard something.’
You feel your heart beating faster and your hands getting clammy. ‘In the woods?’ She nods. ‘Yeah, I’ve seen this in movies. We better get out of he-‘ You flinch and stumble backwards as something runs by a bit further away from you two. ‘What the fu-‘
Nancy grabs your hand. ‘Let’s get out of here.’
‘Don’t need to say twice.’
Thank you for the response. (I'm the Ted anon.)
After reading what you've said, I concede that I might be overplaying it just a bit. I still believe that Ted isn't the best father, though. I don't "hate" him, but I think that a handful of good moments don't eclipse the fact that he's mostly checked out. Tying a tie and going on some carnival rides despite his own discomfort are hardly applause-worthy activities.
Despite his attempt to talk with Mike in 1x03, he's shown to be unsympathetic when Mike struggles in s2. In s3, he's shown to be incredibly oblivious, not noticing Karen's discomfort after he states, "Well, there's someone for everyone." Those are just two examples, but I'm sure I could find more.
Maybe I'm way off base here, I just feel that far too many characterize Ted as an innocent man who's just a bit bland, and I have some concerns that you're giving more credit to him than is due.
"(Ted anon again, I have one more thing to add) That's not to say that Karen is a stellar example of parenting, either, but at least she makes more of an effort than Ted does. And once again, I'm not saying that Ted is some evil, horrible person. I'm simply saying that it's important to make an effort with your children, and when you don't, there are negative ramifications."
What you're seeing is a family without any real emotional intimacy. Maybe it's just more worthy of sympathy for me because I can personally relate to it. I never really understood why my parents got together. I've never seen them be affectionate with each other, and I honestly think the only reason they've stayed together is that they wouldn't know what else to do after all this time.
Ted is oblivious to everything around him. That much is a given, and it's probably where Mike gets it from. I don't think it's so much a matter of him not wanting to be a good husband and father as it is him not really knowing how to be. He doesn't feel like he has a connection with his own family, and he holds responsibility for that. I get the sense that he feels totally incapable of impacting the world around him. He was content to just sit back and let the government agents take care of everything, trusting that they were the good guys.
Karen isn't a stellar parent, either. She tries, yes, but in the way a mother was expected to. She cares about her kids, and I think Ted does, too, but she makes highly questionable decisions that come across as more controlling than parenting. It really isn't until season 3 that she snaps out of it, and it comes after she nearly has her affair. One gets the sense that she accepts that it's too late for her, but not too late for her kids. She doesn't want Nancy to give up like she did. It's the most genuine mother-daughter moment they have, and it happens because Karen isn't trying to be a mom, she's trying to make sure her daughter is happy. I know that sounds like a contradiction, but when she would try to be the perfect mom, it was always in regards to some standard set by society.
There's no reason Ted can't have a moment like that. There's enough here and there to show he does care for his family. It comes down to what role he has to play in the narrative, if any. I think there's plenty of potential, especially is his marriage indeed falls apart, for him to sit down with Mike and talk to him about why it happened. He can be a good father by not trying to be this traditional, acceptable man who provides for his family and just showing he cares enough for his son to not want him to make his same mistakes. He could urge Mike to chase after what he believes in, just as Karen did with Nancy.
And, having learned from their respective situations, perhaps Ted and Karen can do a better job with Holly.
i love hearing what you have to say about season 4!! i promise it’s not too long lol, anyway i have a question for you: what do you think the next season holds for mike & el? i’m a little worried tbh
ahhh thank you !! same rules apply: spoilers ahead, so please read no further and blacklist/filter out the ‘s4′, ‘st4′, ‘spoilers’ tags if you don’t want to see anything !!
i’m going to talk about them both as individuals and as a pair but first, i have to say that i don’t personally feel like you have to worry about them breaking up or anything again this season. i think s4 is really going to establish romantic jopper and once that happens, i don’t see them, mileven, or jancy not being endgame unless someone actually dies. which -- i’m not going to think about the possibility of anyone dying until i’m forced to confront it, so. this is fiction and it’s already unrealistic and i’m gonna take my ‘everyone survives, happiness all around, time to relax’ endings and go. anyway, i would love to add lumax to this list but i honestly think it could go either way depending on what happens in s4. that’s a different essay, though.
i tend to think that the most important dynamic on the show is the one between the whole group and i just don’t really see them spending much more time trying to develop romantic relationships outside of the ones set up since s1/2. maybe steve, robin, and will get love interests, maybe they decide to develop dustin and suzie more, maybe suzie is never even mentioned again, idk. but these will probably all be secondary -- as in less screen time, not less important than the main romances, but probably still less developed. unless it happens to be a new person added to the main cast. which, as of now, the only new mains are brett and priah who has gone from recurring to regular. so.
i think s3 showed how messy and complicated romantic relationships (or, really just relationships in general) can be. everyone was arguing, there was miscommunication all around, everyone thought they knew what was best, no one was seeing eye to eye. but when it comes down to it, they would do anything for each other. they understand each other better than anyone else ever could. i can’t see them spending another season on breakups and romance drama after the ending of s3.
mike and el have already been separated once before. this time, mike knows for sure that she’s alive and that’s she’s with the byers. this time, el won’t be kept completely isolated away from everyone else. they’ve made plans to meet for the holidays. they can still call and talk to each other as much as they want. i’m hoping they handle being separated this time better than they did in s2. i don’t want mike to be moping and i don’t want el to spend a lot of the season thinking about how much she misses him. in fact, i think in their case that some distance could be good for them. the same for jancy and jopper, too, honestly. it’ll be nice to see them existing outside of these relationships while still acknowledging how important they are.
as far as i know, the byers and el stuff has not started filming yet so all there is to speculate on are rumors, the audition tapes, and logical guesses about where the story goes after s3. el obviously moves away with the byers. we still don’t know where. she’ll still be mourning hopper and trying to figure out life without her powers. and, of course, she’ll be in a long distance relationship with mike. i think she’ll be having a hard time and she’ll wish that mike was around, but she’ll realize she’s got a pretty good support system around her now with the byers, too. i’m very, very excited for more joyce and el content particularly, but there’s gotta be some great scenes with her and will and jonathan as well.
there’s only one audition tape that i can confidently tie into the byers + el plot(s?) and it’s the queen bee/mean girl character ‘angela’. if we’re running with the whole ‘there may be some truth to the audition vids’ thing, then this one teases that el will be going to school and that angela will be bullying her. this is something she would probably want to talk about with mike (b i g troy s1 vibes) but i don’t know if she actually would ? so this is probably more a thing that el and will could bond over or that she could talk about with joyce or maybe jonathan. i do think there will be at least a few calls between the two of them before the action really hits and the whole group is (hopefully...) reunited.
so, el -- at least in the beginning of s4 -- will be going to school where ‘angela’ bullies her, forming a bond with joyce + will + jonathan and becoming part of the family, mourning hopper (+ hopefully having conversations about him + his past with joyce), missing her friends back in hawkins, continuing to learn how to navigate life without her powers, and trying to maintain a long distance relationship with mike.
mike... i’ve been seeing some wild theories about him today but they aren’t really that far-fetched i think. first, going back to the audition tapes, the ‘eddie’ audition i saw makes it seem like mike is going to be part of the hellfire club with dustin. i’ve recently learned that there’s another version of the scene where ‘eddie’ is only talking to dustin and mike might not be a part of the club after all. if he isn’t part of the club, then the basketball v. hellfire, jocks v. nerds thing turns into lucas v. dustin and mike’s probably there just caught in the middle while max is off distancing herself from everyone.
at this point, i really want mike and max to become good friends. i think the end of s3 gave them the perfect opportunity. s4 max has s2 mike vibes. it’s not the same situation at all, but he knows kinda what she’s feeling and they could connect through that + the fact that they’ll both be missing el. i also just really want... some wheeler siblings content. i’m hopeful that s4 gives us good nancy and mike scenes bc there’s no reason not to give us good nancy and mike scenes (+holly!). however...
while there’s proof that gaten and sadie and natalia and priah have all been filming since production restarted, and while i have reason to believe that caleb has been filming a lot inside/at the studio recently... there’s no evidence that finn has been on set. there’s none for maya and joe, either, but people have said that finn isn’t even in atlanta right now. maybe he is and maybe he just hasn’t been seen and maybe he’ll pop back up tomorrow. or, maybe he already filmed whatever he needed to film for hawkins before production stopped.
the wild theory that’s popped up today is that everything gets to be too much for him in hawkins and he just... hops on a train to go visit el + the byers. i don’t know if i buy it, but it is interesting to note that he was sitting with them at the table read. and since we can guess that steve and robin will still be working at the video store, robin and nancy will be investigating pennhurst together, lucas and max may have some angst, joyce and murray are probably teaming up for the finding/saving hopper plot, and el is going to bond with will and jonathan, it seems like the order might mean a little something. i’d even bet that dustin and erica have scenes with them bonding over d&d.
now this theory pretty much only exists because no one’s seen finn on set and one of the paps posted some pics of some trains. there’s also always theories about how there will be issues at home with the wheeler fam and if that’s going to happen, what better time than in s4 when all of his friends are pulling away and el’s gone again. so if he is missing el (and will) that much, and if he has any reason to worry about her and how she’s doing, or if the party becoming distant and issues at home are weighing on him and he feels like he needs to get away, he’s absolutely the type to venture off on a train by himself. i don’t know how it would work since he’s definitely supposed to still be in school and his friends/nancy at least would notice he’s gone, but.. it’s fun to think about and we’ve got zero actual content to go off of right now.
another way i could see mike’s plot going is that he’s the one trying to keep the party together this season. playing mediator with lucas and dustin, becoming better friends with max, being the connection between the hawkins plot and the byers plot (along with nancy).
there was also talk of him joining the track team bc the track has been set up with hawkins high colors for filming. but mike ‘this isn’t a stupid sports game’ wheeler? i don’t think so... basically, no one knows at the moment what’s happening with mike wheeler in s4 lol.
s4 mike is just like s4 byers fam -- a complete mystery to me currently. i don’t personally think that he’ll be leaving school and hopping on a train to visit el. i think he’ll be a part of the hellfire club with dustin, or that he won’t and instead will be attempting to keep the party from completely disbanding. i hope that we get wheeler siblings scenes and that max and mike have a breakthrough and become better friends. i also feel like he’ll be having some complicated feelings about hopper, the last interaction they had, etc. and, again, the whole long distance thing with el.
so... mike and el broke up in s3. it was messy. but then they reconciled. and then hopper “died”. s3 ended with them at this weird place where she’s heard him say that he loves her and she’s told him that she loves him back. things are a little awkward in the scene bc everything has changed at this point, but a kiss, an ‘i love you’, planning to meet up on the holidays, and promising to call frequently all sounds like they’re back together and going to try making the long distance thing work to me.
i think they’ll be together when s4 starts. i think that we’ll probably only see them talking on the phone or their radios for the first few eps. maybe we’ll see flashbacks or something to them being together on the holidays. the distance might be hard and they’re definitely going to be missing each other. like... el doesn’t have mike or hopper with her now and i’m thinking the party is going to be drifting apart, plus they’re both probably going to have other personal issues that have nothing to do with each other or the party. maybe they’ll be experiencing some emotional distancing of their own while dealing with the aftermath of hopper’s “death”, the move, and whatever’s going on with them at home and at school. i think that once they reunite (probably not until the last half of the season), they’re likely to be stronger than ever.
now, onto personal theories that have zero basis. for some reason, i can’t get it out of my head that this season might dive into psychological horror a little bit ? like a greatest fears type of thing ?? and i keep thinking about brenner popping back up and using the people el loves to get to her or something and 👀👀
#this took forever to write and it's so long and for WHAT#when i tell you i've been typing and deleting and typing and deleting and typing again all day#anyway.... a l l of this is speculation pretty much bc the byers/el haven't even started filming yet#and there's no info on mike as of now#these don't even really touch on what could happen at the end of the season#bc i just have... no idea what's really happening or how it could possibly end#there was that whole thing about s5 being the part 2 of s4 so like...#what if we don't even get the reunions this season lol#nah i have to believe that everyone will be back together by the end#answered#s4#st4#spoilers#thank you for the question 💖 !!#sorry it's basically nonsense on my part though#me @ me: how can you ramble so much but say so little#Anonymous#idk if this even makes any sense but it's 2 am now and i've been staring at it forever so
for the hc thing? Richie has a huge following making ironic Tik Toks. He is VERY skilled in the art of shooting (the dance) and fortnite default dances. That is all.
I got carried away… which is weird because I’ve never played fortnite and I’m not into tik tok so I had to ask my friends the weirdest questions of all time but I feel educated now, so thank you!
- So, the first signs of this nightmare started when Fortnite came around
- Richie didn’t even play it, Bill and Ben did, and they tried to make every loser play with them but everyone was okay with just watching
- Except Richie
- The first time he watched them play he got fucking heart eyes looking at the screen
- “Holly shit, guys! Fucking pickaxes and parachutes?!”
- He was heavily scolded for using the term parachutes
- “THEY’RE CALLED GLIDERS, TRASHMOUTH.” yikes..
- Well anyway, you know how it goes. Richie gets sickly addicted, to the point of making everyone else bored of playing because he has the power to make everything suddenly annoying
- Richie takes it to extremes, like doing the dances everywhere they go at random moments, and the thing is… he kinda sucks at it…
- At first, the losers pretend they don’t know him if he starts dancing in public. But this is Richie Tozier, alright? He’s committed! (right..)
- He starts practicing every afternoon to get better, and sadly for the others, he makes sure to share his progress by hitting one of the losers up with texts and calls to say how good he’s getting
- But oh well, he actually starts getting better, like really-good better. Once, Mike made the mistake of complimenting one of Richie’s dance moves and that was the no turning back point. Richie is on fire
- He’d show off his dances on high school parties and ONCE a drunk guy came out of nowhere and joined him and Richie swore he was the happiest man alive in that moment
- Also, very important to mention. He sucks at playing, but that’s how he likes it. He likes the game because there’s always new skins and stuff to buy, and the colors and designs and the whole adrenaline of just fucking around with other players it’s what really makes it appealing to him
- He almost never kills anyone and annoys the other players every way he can think off: he shouts into the mic when it gets quiet, does his voices until he’s most likely mutted by every single teammate, etc
- Some players start recognizing him and they make sure to let Richie know how much he’s hated and annoying and disliked. Everytime, Richie comes back with a mom joke
-One time his team won Victory Royale and he called every loser to make a speech even though he killed no one
- It starts getting boring after a while so he tries to make the losers play with him once, after much begging they agree, so they play on the playground mode
- So like at this point only Richie, Ben and Bill know the controls and all that, Mike and Bev are quick to learn by themselves, but right in the beggining of the game, before anyone had the chance to tell Eddie and Stan how to play, Richie just has to take the chance to mess with them
- He builds walls around the two of them so they get trapped and Richie almost pees his pants from all the insults Eddie throws at him while Stan just stays quiet and says
- “You begged me to play, I’m here for literally no other reason.”
- And then Eddie just keeps slamming all the buttons until he smashes the walls down with the pickaxe ( he kills Stan in the process )
- After Eddie learns he can do that, he honestly doesn’t care about anything else, he just keeps trying to murder Richie with it, but every time Richie simply uses other weapons to kill him, which leaves him even more pissed
- Eddie loves to collect things and every time he shouts “Guys I just got balloons!” or other things the first thing Richie does is to kill him and keep the things for himself
- Anyway, those little sessions always end up with them doing pointless things and Richie killing Eddie every two minutes because he thinks it’s funny
- Then Tik Tok became a thing
- It wasn’t really that popular in the beggining, or at least the losers were still oblivious to it. But sometimes they have these “try not to laugh” challenges and they usually watch vine compilations, but this time autoplay took them to a tik tok compilation
- I think it’s obvious that Richie fell in love again
- So they kept on watching those compilations, and after a few minutes some tiktoks had the fortnite dances in them, oh bOy, is Richie gonna download that now and become obsessed ??YES???
- And like, the ironic humour in it is so perfect for him that Richie downloads tik tok right in that minute and starts trying to figure out how to do things by simply putting the losers on video and zooming in on their faces with some random music as background
- His content is shitty and he got kicked in the ass many times because he keeps following his friends around every day and recording their arguments or pointless things
- He gets addicted to watching compilations and that’s when he starts attempting to do those ironic ones and he thinks he’s pretty good
- He actually is
- Well, his first tik toks were super cringy and belong to a darker past but now he’s a real tik tok master, or at least that’s what he says
- As revenge for putting their faces on tik tok, one time Bev got the app and the rest of the losers took Richie’s cringy old ones and had a great time making fun of him by adding their own tik toks
- They didn’t get any popular but the point was to bug Richie, which sorta worked because he was embarrassed and deleted all his old content
- One time Mike and Stan got into a small fight, and Richie kept singing the first verses of “Hit or Miss” to both of them until they couldn’t take it anymore and had to get over their fight to kick Richie’s ass together
- And like, Stan was really, really pissed whenever Richie used that tactic, specially when he sang “you’ve got a boyfriend I bet he doesn’t kiss ya”
- So once Eddie really, really got mad at Richie and Stan just fucking lost it, he started shouting that one verse in the middle of the school canteen
- Richie couldn’t even be sad anymore, how could he?
- Stan was so embarrassed because he forgot they were at school and everyone just stared, but Richie saved it by singing the next line out loud so that Stan wasn’t the only one getting attention
- Eddie was still mad
- Richie did the only logical thing and started singing “Baby I’m yours” by breakbot
I still have two mini fic prompts from @los-laureles-fics reply to do lmao so here we go with number 3. things you said too quietly. You’re in for a real treat because what do I try out now? A TED WHEELER POV. (on Jancy, lol).
“Ted! We need more ketchup! There’s another bottle in the fridge, can you go get it?”
Karen can probably hear his sigh but she should be happy at least that he doesn’t object. Best not to rock the boat. Not when we’re having company. He hands over the spatula to Mr. Sinclair who’s been standing with him by the grill, discussing the finer points of how to get the hamburgers just right. Out of all the events his wife insists they host, the 4th of July party is probably the one he leasts objects too. It’s a day worth celebrating of course, to honor this great nation and it’s a party that suits him as he can just keep himself by the grill instead of being forced to smalltalk with all the neighbors and Karen’s friends. He’s quite content with flipping burgers and talking about meat with Mr. Sinclair who he finds the most tolerable out of the guests as he doesn’t over-engage in conversation with him at least. That really grinds his gears, when people just drone on and on and expect him to listen and care.
He doesn’t like being forced to diverge from his spot. Mr. Sinclair assures him he’ll keep an eye on the meat but it’s not like he cares that much about that, it’s just meat on a grill, it’s not complicated. But he was comfortable standing there, and also he doesn’t see why he has to be the one to go fetch the damn ketchup. Isn’t it enough that his money paid for everything and that he cooks the food for everyone (well minus the potato salad, apple pie, sugar cream pie and all the rest that Karen’s been taking over the kitchen completely with in the lead up to the party)? Wasn’t the kids supposed to help out? He looks around. Mike is occupied playing with Holly together with that new friend of his. Judy or Jessica or whatever her name is, something. It definitely was in the J family. Or wait was it Diane? Eh, not important. But then where the hell is Nancy? She’s usually good at helping out.
The sound of laughter in the yard is shut out as he closes the door behind him. He revers the silence of the empty house. He briefly considers lingering inside for a bit to enjoy it but discards the idea as he knows from past experience that Karen will come and find him, she always finds him, and be mad. So he heads to the kitchen.
Oh. There’s Nancy. And the Byers eldest boy. Well, he assumes it’s the Byers boy, he can’t really see his face well given that it’s obscured by Nancy’s head in the way. Well this is awkward. He’s never walked in on Nancy in this situation, he’s not quite sure how to handle it. Nancy has always been a good girl, for the most part. There was of course the business with her sneaking out to see the Harrington kid one year... two years ago? Sometime ago. But Karen handled that for them. And if his daughter were sneaking out to see a boy he was at least glad it was the Harringtons kid, that’s a good family that, with money and good prospects. But apparently that thing fizzled out... sometime in the past. He’s aware his daughter has been dating the Byers eldest boy for awhile now, he’s not quite sure for how long but he’s been coming over to the house a lot more over the last few months than he’d done previously when he came to pick up his younger brother (at least that’s what he assumes the boy was doing here all those times).
It’s not like he minds the Byers. He’s never had to interact with Joyce much, thankfully, he finds her quite frazzled and not the easiest to talk to, just on a completely different wavelength than him. Truth be told he always found Lonnie easier to interact with on social occasions. But their youngest have been friends with Mike for years, which he finds tolerable. At least he’s quiet, a characteristic he very much appreciates, especially in his son’s friends who all tend to be too loud otherwise. And the elder boy isn’t too talkative either, he’s learnt as Karen always insist he stay for dinner nowadays. So he doesn’t mind them (though he’s not wild about his good name being too tied into the Byers who’s carries another kind of weight in town), not even the eldest boy dating his eldest daughter.
He does however mind the boy being pressed up with his back against their fridge. He does mind the red lipstick marks on the boy’s neck, jaw and cheek undoubtedly left there by his own daughter. And he really does mind the hands gripping his daughter’s backside, crumpling the fabric of her summer dress and bunching it up somewhat. Also he could really do without the gasps and moans escaping through his daughter’s lips and the boy’s every time their lips break apart.
He decides to clear his throat. He’s found it usually does the trick of grabbing people’s attention, for example at the dinner table. No effect. The kissing continues and the skirt of his daughter’s dress really is starting to rise dangerously high up. He averts his gaze to the ceiling.
“Ahem, Nancy,” he tries. No reaction. Now really, have they both gone deaf? This obviously will take something more. He tries again, loudly clears his throat and goes: “NANCY WHEELER.”
That certainly does the trick. The two teens spring apart like they’ve been burnt, frantically looking from each other to him. Nancy’s eyes are big and her eyebrows have shot up to her forehead. He hopes the blush on her cheeks are due to surprise and embarrassment and nothing else that preceded his intervention. He looks to the boy and is quite pleased to see that he appears to be wanting to sink through the floor, perhaps that’s even genuine fear in his eyes?
“Dad!” Nancy calls out.
“M-Mr. Wheeler...” the boy awkwardly mumbles.
“Hrm. So that’s where you were.”
Nancy looks down and doesn’t answer.
“S-sorry, Mr. Wheeler,” Jonathan says, looking him in the eye for a second.
“Hm. Well. This is certainly... hm. Well it’s not exactly good manners to sneak off on your own from the party to... fraternize, now is it?” He questions, having trouble deciding on fitting terminology to use for this.
“Fraternizing?” Nancy crinkles her eyebrows. Oh well maybe that term wasn’t fitting.
“And I can’t say I appreciate walking into my kitchen and seeing you pressed up against my fridge and groping my daughter like that,” he lays down sternly, staring down the boy who swallows hard.
“Groping?” Nancy questions again. “And leave him alone, dad! It’s not groping when I like his touch. If you’re going to yell at anyone yell at me, it was my idea to sneak off like this. Jonathan didn’t do anything wrong. I don’t think I did even really, but definitely not Jonathan.”
When did Nancy become so uppity? Usually there’s no trouble out of her. At least nothing that Karen can’t handle on her own. He thinks it’s maybe best to slide this over to her plate too, he’s sure how to discipline this. Because he’s pretty sure that’s what needs to happen at least. But eh, this isn’t his area. Why bother? Better to let Karen deal with it.
His silence instead of a retort seems to infer for the kids that they’re free to go. They start moving out of the room, Nancy clutching the boy’s hand in hers. And wiping her lipstick off of him with the other. They might as well go. He’s glad the interaction is over. He lets out a big sigh before wandering outside again before Karen comes looking.
“The ketchup, Ted! God!” His wife calls out to him annoyed, rolling her eyes in a big way and gesturing, soon as she sees him outside again on his way to retake his designated spot by the grill. Oh right. He forgot why he even went inside in the first place. Understandably, he feels.
“I’ll get it Mrs. Wheeler,” that boy gets up from his seat next to Nancy where they apparently settled next to the younger kids just before he himself got out here again.
“Thank you, Jonathan,” his wife gushes, looking with gratitude at the boy before shaking her head against him and then launching into conversation with Mrs. Sinclair, Mrs. Henderson and Mrs. Byers.
He doesn’t meet the boy’s eye as he walks past him on his way inside.
Bon Scott's Accidental Death
Bon Scott's Accidental Death
Ronald Belford Scott, also known as Bon Scott, was born on July 9th, 1946, in Forfar, Scotland. He was the second born child born to his parents Charles and Isabelle, their first born being a son named Sandy, that passed away shortly after birth. In 1949, Bon's younger brother Derek was born. In 1952, his family moved to Australia when he was six, first moving to Melbourne.In 1953, his youngest sibling Graeme was born. Ronald recieved his nickname 'Bon' after he started school, since there was already another Ronald in his class, and his classmates played on the words "Bonnie Scotland".
In 1956, the Scott family moved to Fremantle, and Bon joined the Fremantle Scots Pipe Band, learning the drums. He dropped out of school at the age of 15, and worked various jobs such as a farmhand, crayfisherman, and weighing-machine mechanic trainee. In 1963, he was sent to the Fremantle Prison's assessment centre where he spent a short time, and later spent nine months at the Riverbank Juvenile Institution, for giving a false name and address to the police, escaping legal custody, stealing 12 gallons of petrol, and having unlawful carnal knowledge. He later tried to join the Australian Army, but was rejected for being considered "socially maladjusted".
In 1964, at the age of 18, he started his first band called The Spektors, and doubled as drummer and vocalist. He was inspired by Little Richard, who is cited as having been his idol. He performed in other bands such as The Valentines and Fraternity Despite Fraternity recording two albums in the early 70's, the records were not formally released until decades later. On January 24th, 1972, Bon married Irene Thornton. After two years, the couple separated, then later divorced in 1977, but still remained friends up until his death. In 1974, Bon suffered a motorcycle injury that put him into a coma. After he was released, he became the chauffer for AC/DC. Later that same year, he would be promoted to lead singer.
In Michael Browning's book 'Dog Eat Dog' (Browning managed AC/DC in their early years), he states that he visited Bon Scott in the hospital in Melbourne in 1975 after Bon overdosed on drugs. Michael Browning stated in his book that, "Bon was bragging to me the last time he was in that hospital, he was visiting two separate girls, both unknown to each other, who were both giving birth to his kids at the same time. So there's at least two of Bon Scott's children out there, or at least two I can vouch for.".
In 1979, the band released 'Highway To Hell', which reached the top 20 in the US, their popularity was reaching a high status that ever before. In early 1980, Bon was in England, and had went with Mike Cocks to visit their friends from the band Trust in the Scorpio Sound Studio in London, where Trust recorded the album 'Repression'. Bon was working on texts for the English version of the album, and later the musicians did a jam together of the song 'Ride On', this would turn out to be his last recording.
Somewhere around late February 18th to the early morning of February 19th, 1980, Bon had just visited the London club called the Music Machine, and was left to sleep in a Renault 5 that was owned by his friend Alistair Kinnear. Allegedly, Alistair had driven the car home, where Bon had passed out before getting there. The location the two were at was 67 Overhill Road in East Dulwich. Later that day, Alistair found Bon lifeless, and alerted the authorities. Bon Scott was taken to King's College Hospital in Cemberwell, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Bon's body was embalmed, then later cremated. His ashes were interred by his family at Fremantle Cemetery, in Fremantle, Australia. He was 33.
[Confusion and Conspiracies]
There are multiple inconsistencies of Bon's death, such as misspellings of names from various parties. There has been the contention that Bon was killed by exhaust fumes that were redirected into the car, causing some sort of asthma attack. Anecdotally, I had heard that Bon passed away due to fumes in the car and it irritated his asthma.
The timeline of the events has been challenged, such as when Bon was exactly found dead, in the book 'Bon: The Last Highway', by Jesse Fink (2017). Apparently the book quotes Paul Chapman (guitarist from UFO), stating that he had been informed early that morning by Bon's friend Joe Fury that Scott was dead. Alistair Kinnear said that he found Bon in the evening. Paul Chapman states that Bon and Joe Fury were with him the previous night of February 18th, and Bon had left his apartment to buy heroin, never to return. Jesse Fink's book also reveals that Bon and Alistair were not alone that fated night, but there was indeed a third person there named Zena Kakoulli. Zena stayed over at Alistair's apartment while Bon was in the parked car outside. In a 2018 update of Fink's book, he stated that there was evidence that a fourth person was there, Zena Kakoulli's husband Peter Perrett, who was also a rock musician. Fink believes that pulmonary aspiration of vomit was the cause of Bon's death, from a suspected heroin overdose, though Bon's official cause of death is listed as 'acute alcohol poisoning', classified as 'death by misadventure'. In a book by Clinton Walker, 'Highway To Hell', Walker agrees with the coroner that Bon died of alcohol poisoning.
Another source states that when Bon passed out, Alistair called Silver Smith asking what to do, and she is the suggested leaving him in the car since it wasn't out of the ordinary for him to pass out after a night of heavy drinking. Alistair claimed that he "just could not move him", and covered Bon with a blanket, and left a note telling him how to get to the apartment in case he woke up. Alistair then put Bon on his back to be in a more comfortable position.
Allegedly, when Bon's body was found, it was not in the laid back position that Alistair had put it. Instead, Bon's body was "curled around the gearstick, his neck twisted, his dental plate dislodged. The bile rose up in his throat and blocked his asthmatic windpipe.". This is according to Clinton Walker's book, 'Highway to Hell'.
The same evening that the events transpired, the original drummer for AC/DC, Colin Burgness, was also at the same bar that Bon had been at. He stated that the remembered "us leaving and he alright-like he wasn't drunk at all. And we went home, and the next day he's dead! To me it's just a really, really, strange thing." Burgness also stated that, "I can definitely say, to this day, that when we left, he was definitely not drunk at all."
According to Alistair Kinnear though, Bon was already drunk when they met up at the bar. When they got to the club, Bon was "drinking four whiskies straight in a glass at a time". In Jesse Fink's book, Bon was remembered as a "prodigious drinker", where seven double whiskies putting him "in the ground seems a strange notion".
After Bon's death, Alistair disappeared, and there were doubts that he even existed. His apartment was ransacked, and he was never heard from again. Interestingly, there is the common contention that Bon may have also died because the temperatures where in freezing weather. But according to Fink's book, it has been proven that the temps were higher than normal, and above freezing.
[After]
After Bon's death, the remaining members of AC/DC considered quitting the band. In the end, they decided not to since they concluded that Bon would have wanted them to continue. With encouragement from Bon's family, they hired Brian Johnson as their new vocalist, and released 'Back in Black' five months later. The album was tributed to him, though there has been controversy whether some of the lyrics were originally Bon's, of which he was uncredited for. In Fink's book, Bon Scott's girlfriends Silver Smith and Holly X both stated that he wrote, "You Shook Me All Night Long".
Holly X is believed to have been the inspiration for the song. In 'You Shook Me', there is the lyric, "She had sightless eyes... working double time on the seduction line." But Holly X allegedly had a horse called Doubletime, she had also been told by Bon that she had 'Chartreuse eyes'. According to Holly X, the lyric stated 'chartreuse eyes' instead of sightless eyes'.
Silver Smith stated that she had seen the lines from the song in a letter from Bon in 1976. Allegedly, he had just finished writing the lyrics to the 'Back In Black' album, on the night of his death. The task was a call for celebration, which is hinted at being the reason why he went to the club that fateful night.
Silver Smith has since passed away.
[Memorial]
Bon's grave site has since become a cultural landmark, with it being declared important enough to be included on the list of classified heritage places. His grave is the most visited in all of Australia.
On Mary 6th, 2006, the town of Kirriemuir, Scotland held a service for him, and revealed a Caithness stone slab commemorating Bon. On April 30th, 2016, they erected a bronze statue of him.
On February 24th, 2008, a bronze statue of him was erected in Fremantle, Australia.
In 2014, Bon's ex wife Irene Thornton released the book 'My Bon Scott'.
There was almost no time to waste when Hawkins was in imminent danger. At least, that’s what Nancy was suspecting. There was no way everything that happened was pure coincidence. Even if it wasn’t Upside Down related, there was something afoot.
As they passed through her house, Nancy turned back to Robin, her hand resting on the stairwell. “I guess she doesn’t have much else to do,” Nancy commented. It wasn’t a jab to her mom, but it wasn’t like she was running after any kids anymore other than Holly. Then again, even when she was younger Nancy couldn’t picture a time that their house looked anything other than perfect, save for the few times she had stepped on Mike’s Legos or Holly’s Lite Brite glow pegs.
“Oh!” Nancy jerked her hand off the stairwell, a small smile on her face. She lead the charge upstairs to her bedroom. Nancy pushed the door open, leaving the door open wide enough to let Robin in. Her room hadn’t changed much since high school. Going off to college, Nancy made it abundantly clear that all things Hawkins would be left in Hawkins save for a handful of photo keepsakes. “You can close the door, if you want,” she said, sitting down on the edge of her bed. “My mom only cares if it’s a boy and…” she peeked her head around the corner to see if Holly, her dad, or her mom were snooping around the corner. “It’s probably better if no one hears this.”
Nancy flipped herself upside down on her bed, looking under her bed. “There it is!” She exclaimed, snatching a pink hat box. She resituated on the bed and popped open the box, filled with newspaper clippings from the last couple of Hawkins Post. They never reported anything truly newsworthy, in her journalistic opinion, but she did keep them on hand to jot down her own personal notes. “Can you tell me what happened to you? The weird shit that happened?”
⚢
standing in the doorway to the bedroom, the invitation to shut the door behind her made her throat slightly tighten. it didn’t make sense — why was she so nervous about this? it wasn’t as if nancy would think robin was insane, since they’d both experienced way worse. “imagine if that’s how your parents found out that living the dream in hawkins isn’t all it’s cut out to be.” despite the anxious thoughts, she closed the door anyway. following the other over to the bed, robin took a seat but making sure to leave a good foot or so between them. watching nancy effortlessly flip upside down only to return a few seconds later with a box in tow, she uttered a quick “smooth.”.
cassie had also been at the cemetery that evening so perhaps she’d already told nancy everything, but she was here now. it was too late to just back out. “some of us were down at the cemetery the same night as benny’s.” the why was a little less important. “our fire went out, some people fell into literal open graves and steve was… there! but he keeps insisting that he was out of town that night.”
a pause, looking up from fidgeting hands to make eye contact with nancy, robin would be lying if she said she wasn’t a little scared. “but then the strangest thing happened — i think i blacked out and had some kind of… vision or something. it was weird and creepy — but it felt like i was there, really there. except i wasn’t, i just woke up in the forest like nothing ever happened.”
only now did it truly strike robin that the contents of such a vision would upset nancy just as much if not more than they had done herself. because it concerned barb, someone they had both once called their best friend. and if robin had to elaborate on it, should she… bend the truth? then again, she really didn’t want to hurt nancy’s feelings. “i’m either losing my mind with a capital l, or-” the alternative was way too daunting to even speak.
Red Eyed
What are libertarian-ish night creatures supposed to do now: be respectable? Red Eye is ending for reasons more mysterious than the fact it made the air at all. The asylum for those allergic to both Nancy Pelosi and daylight is being cleared via eminent domain. Soon, another very important rerun of a show from hours before will run on a news channel. Why would Fox News share anything fresh? It's not their business or anything. Eyes will remain as red, just without a glowing screen as a remedy.
Red Eye served a faction of conservatives who treated being up too late as a virtue. It's a valid lifestyle choice, especially for those who live on their own terms. As one might expect, anyone living so idiosyncratically tends to want government to bother only terrorists while leaving Americans the hell alone. Daytime snoozers are bothered by debt and mandates, not pot or porn.
The Bart Simpson of Fox News found an eccentric audience that had been waiting for a similarly bizarre program. Sad fans reminisce about jokes that were delightfully tasteless in the best way. Like Joel Hodgson said about Mystery Science Theater 3000, the right people will get this. Our interactive world enabled ardent fans to tweet approval and commentary right along. The muscle memory for typing “#Redeye” is still ingrained.
Fittingly, the smart-ass small-government fan found a spiritual home during an hour when normal people would be scared to visit a bus station. Degenerate insomniacs were innately pleased by irreverent takes on our world's exhausting news. Nothing was cathartic like a venue for mocking the sort of pompous newsmakers who were in bed by sunset.
As the last episode approaches, I can insufferably boast of watching from the first. I expected a Hannity & Colmes repeat over a decade ago on some random weeknight and was instead greeted by a strange and wonderful off-kilter camera shot of a smirking host and panelists. It was as if Fox News had read my mind: I had always hoped they'd offer a new cheeky transmission for the darkness crowd instead of a staid rerun from a decent hour. I figured they stole my thoughts with News Corp's mind ray. But it was okay as long as there was something fun to watch. Besides, the brain beam tickled.
I didn't recognize original proprietor Greg Gutfeld by name but did know of his surreal unsigned copy in Stuff Magazine. The demented take on politics was simultaneously incisive, as a person who took nothing seriously took on everything serious. Study hall would've been intolerable without wise guys.
But Fox is done with being interesting. Rumor holds that Tucker Carlson's debates with hand-picked lunatics designed to make his primness seem reasonable will sadly occupy the hour while never filling it. I'll double-check Monday and turn it off four seconds after 3 a.m. Going full circle sometimes forms a zero.
The modest thrill of seeing one's name on TV at 3:57 a.m. is all that's left. I'll always cherish a favorite cable personality reading my silly content on-air twice. For one, I invented the Red Eye drink. Greg read my email in, can this be right, October 2007 after soliciting entries to create an official cocktail for a show that was begging for one. I suggested a concoction I named Unicorn Juice (rum and Coke with vanilla syrup). Like the tagline said, it's as sweet as ombudsman Andy Levy and goes down easier than then-sidekick Bill Schulz. The ensuing shot of the latter with his arms folded and shaking his head like he wanted to murder whoever wrote it is one you may recognize as the greatest moment of my life.
I was additionally lucky enough to hear my tweet read during the thousandth episode after solicitations for suggestions on how to spend the evening. Mine was fittingly perverse. Unnatural pride in momentarily hearing one's name is a byproduct of zealous devotion. Also, I cherish the tangible reward that accompanied winning two of Greg's drawings, which he used to send to those who suggested titles he liked via email. The masterpieces feature Unicorn Jones and Fluffy McNutter, the show's cartoon mascots who are very real to the likes of Greg and me. I had them framed. Of course.
Fox News has to fund Bill O'Reilly's lawsuits somehow. I guess the highest-rated show possible at three in the freaking morning was a hemorrhage on a global conglomerate's budget. Obeying the calculator means disregarding the soul. Sure, it's cheaper to rerun something from the night before even if fewer watch because recycling removes one show's expenses. But the production cost reduction may be costly. The network just ended a cheap experimental training ground. They found one of their 5 p.m. weekday and primetime weekend presenters by letting him figure it out during the weirdo hour. Fox & Friends is disturbed in a different sense.
Like Bill after his visits to Switzerland, my viewing habits had already begun to transition. I watched the entire Trump News Channel less as it made North Korean state TV look nuanced by comparison. And familiar Red Eye guests appeared less frequently, replaced by Coys and Vances who didn't spark the same chemistry with me. I'm glad it was the unnervingly wholesome funnyman Tom Shillue replacing Greg if the move had to be made, but news executives didn't ask my opinion.
At least memories of references will continue. Countless segments and incidents on this little late-night show with the same budget as Shepard Smith's pocket square allocation inspired so much mirth. The Notorious P.A.B., Robot Theater, and Pinch the Talking Newspaper are shorthand for moments that outsiders roll their eyes at while fans giggle like mental patients. Social media camaraderie among those with a taste for the twisted made the nightly crawlspace tour even more fun.
Some questions will never be answered. I'll always wonder what happened to frequent ad break regulars Cancer Peggy and Catheter Holly, Greg's stunted half-brother Gunnar, and frequent early guest Ron Geraci. At the same time, I'm grateful for having discovered talented people like Patti Ann Browne, Lauren Sivan, Terry Schappert, Mike Baker, and Joe DeVito on the unhinged panel. They've all been kind to fans even when restraining orders would be appropriate
I can't think of another forum that allowed the likes of Kurt Loder, Jim Norton, and Andrew W.K. to discuss the day's issues, at least not off the top of my head. And the initial broadcast was the first time I encountered Andrew Breitbart, the man more responsible than anyone for both today's brand of subversive conservatism and Red Eye getting on air.
Getting locked in the basement can be its own adventure. It felt like the right place. Every surreal hour seemed like it embodied New York City's openness to absurdity. Staying up when the normals were sleeping responsibly simply confirmed it. The draw was clear even in the dead of night. I didn't live on the same island as Red Eye's studio when the show started, but I do now.
The evening excitement is about to end as time marches on. Soon, some faceless FNC Trump-humping hour won't have to move their furniture off the set every night. The quirky culture both spurred and revealed by the most refreshing offering ever shared on cable news will experience a diaspora now, but every fan will take the rebellious attitude along.
Like the Velvet Underground's fans all starting bands, Red Eye's devotees will keep skewering pomposity through snark. If it's your only weapon, hone it. Now, I can only indulge in YouTube playlists of the show that made staying up too late fun and wander aimlessly through Bryant Park. Red Eye is ending. The amazing thing was that it ever begun.
MarsCon 2020 Convention Review
MarsCon is a convention that occurred in Williamsburg Doubletree by Hilton Hotel and happened between January 17th to 19th. It is a weekend fun party where Sci-Fi and Fantasy are the main focus of the theme. When they say a weekend party, they are telling the truth for so many events and attractions you had to selectively choose what you desired to do. Their mascot is Marso the Martian and as a mascot, the person really fitted the role for sure. Whether you were doing cosplay, seeking deals in the market areas, enjoying music, playing games, joining your favorite panels, or even volunteering this convention had it all for those wanting these things and more. I, on the other hand, I wanted the status of volunteer and help out at MarsCon.
Boy, the first day was busy for me at least when after I ate breakfast at Doubletree. My shift began at 10 am but 9:30 soon became the time instead of 10. I ventured down to the dealer’s room where I was greeted by Jennifer, who the leader of that area, and sent me right away to assist the other vendors. Specifically, I was assigned a couple who had books galore in their booth. I did not mine by unloading cases of books on a Dolley and bring them inside to sort through and organize on tables. If you think that just unloading was a sole job then you were gravely mistaken. After the loading dock, the couple also me to organize books by the author’s last name and man they were at least 26 cases for every letter of the alphabet. I even put a bookshelf together and for all of my efforts, they insisted on me to choose a book. The book was Sympathy for the Devil by Holly Lisle where a woman asks for amnesty from the underworld and she literally gets what she wants with the devil himself seeking her out personally.
An hour passed in the dealer’s room and at that time the vendors that were there were all set up. I went to the section supervisor and she sent me to go to the Con Suite. Apparently, Con Suite is the area for MarsCon attendees could go and get food throughout the convention. My first task was to blow up the inflatable trays for the salad bar. Funny thing, I was getting nowhere trying to put air in this plug that was similar to a beach ball. I did not succeed until one of the staff showed me a method of putting your teeth on the plug and then blow which made it so much easier. I washed a drink container in the men’s bathroom which was lots of fun and then proceed to dump old ice in coolers. There were a total of two coolers where ice was necessary and one of them had cheese beginning to defrost so the fridge was the immediate place to put them. Also, I helped a third staff member to get food out of the car and bring it into the building.
After Con Suite, I stumbled across the Art Gallery with aid from the volunteer coordinator, Addie. The art gallery had many grid-like panels for artists to hang and hopefully sell their art pieces. There were wood carvings, paintings, sketches, jewelry, and other creative works all ready for sale to the convention goers to buy in an auction format. My job was to hang signs of the artist who had that space and so for every two panels I put their name. This would help those to distinguish what spaces they had and which spaces belonged to someone else.
I would get to know two artists one by seeing their art and knowing them that way and one in person directly. Theresa Mather had a booth where I set it up based on her diagram to place her art according to numbers on the sheet. While I was setting up, I kept staring at one of the dragons she had and this one was 50 Shades of Green. Mather’s art has a certain element to it where she puts a joke in the drawings and 50 Shades of Green was one of them. I bought this piece for its constant mentions of books in the background like Bad Fiction, MeloDrama, and alt course the green dragon reading a book. In this section, I soon met the Guest of Honor Charles Urbach who has countless works in books, game covers, and other visual art projects. He combines a very traditional pencil and coloring to the visual art software on the computer to deliver covers from the Magic the Gathering series to Star Wars and many others. I thought it was very cool that he said: “For anyone to be successful in any creative field, they need to be stubborn and keep doing their content regardless of what the world thinks.”
For the rest of the convention, I would not have any specific volunteer positions but in programming. Basically, programming is a volunteer who goes in a panel and reports on the outcome of the panel. I was responsible for writing the number of attendees, when it started and ended, the panel name, panelists on the panel, did they stay on topic, and most importantly a brief description of went well or other general notes. Not only was I enjoying the panels but I was a volunteer at the same time. Addie, the volunteer coordinator, told me to have fun and provide feedback on the panels that interested me on behalf of MarsCon. This opportunity taught me the importance of why panels or workshops are essential for a convention. More importantly, the people who are doing these panels are vendors, convention attendees, and special guests who all broaden a convention’s success like MarsCon.
The panels that I reviewed are as the following: Win, Lose, or Draw, RavenCon Meeting, The Future of Post-Apocalypse Fiction, Profesor Indiana Jones: Tenure Review, a trolling panel (Trolling, Trolling, Trolling), and Flair Bartending Sci-Fi Mocktails. The ones that stood out the most are Win, Lose, or Draw Indiana Jones, and the Flair Bartending panels. Win, Lose, or Draw was hosted by Kevin Fowler and it was actually a game all designed by him. In the game, we had two teams and those teams had to bid a time at 90 seconds or below to draw based on what they saw. A team could get points based guessing the drawing correctly (3 points), steal from the other team (2 points) and penalty points from the other team getting it wrong (1 point). Indiana Jones panel was a panel about the tenure review of Indiana Jones teaching at a college. The panel was hosted by Some Nerds who have a Podcast and was a skit routine of a famous fictional archaeologist teaching an archaeology class. It was supposed to be funny in terms of Indiana Jones not having the professional skill set to be a professor like spending the college’s on exotic business trips and showing up with hard to believe stories about his journeys without such artifacts he went there for. Flair Bartending was mocktail demonstrations by Alexis and her son, William. They showed demonstrated mocktails like Shirley Temple, Roy Rogers, and a recent online favorite of Baby Yoda. There were five mocktails in total and was a family-friendly activity with nonalcohol mixing of drinks. j In conclusion, I learned that a convention can have ties to a party theme and generally a good time overall. I personally liked getting an experience that was more volunteer-based where the enjoyment was beyond the original assumption. I met people and formed connections that I could later use. Probably, my most favorite part was speaking to Mike Pederson and somehow being part of their convention planning for RavenCon. I went to their RavenCon Meeting and got lots of information about their convention. RavenCon and MarsCon at least this year are rival conventions in the scopes of them both being in the same hotel at Doubletree. I am ready to be put through the wringer according to the other RavenCon staff as Mike’s assistant. I feel that MarsCon 2020 went without a hitch and then some this year. It is definitely worth the shot to go back next year and many more years down the road.
27 Reasons Why Your Content Sucks
Nobody thinks their content sucks – or, in other words, is weak and not deserving to be believed.
After all, why would someone intentionally create something that’s utterly useless for their organization or their audience?
And yet, a lot of content sucks. We’ve all seen (and sometimes created) it.
Consider this article the proverbial splash of cold water to help you wake up (or more importantly, wake your content up).
More than 70 people responded to my request for examples of bad content, but almost all demurred to offer real-life examples. But one brave, smart content creator came forward to share her own experience: Christina Russ of Gage Diamonds.
“Sadly, I’m guilty of writing (weak) content at times,” she says. “Here’s a piece I wrote that no one will ever read because, honestly, no one gives a crap about what I’m selling.”
“Despite the fact that I write that type of content, I have my moments of sanity. Here’s a better piece I wrote,” Christina says.
Christina smartly recognized the difference between the two posts: “One is (perceived as) beneficial to the business. The other is beneficial to the readers because it provides useful information about store credit cards and financing opportunities.”
A lack of focus on the audience’s needs was frequently cited as a key mistake.
Now, that we have the audience-focus thing on the list, let’s dive into 27 more characteristics of content that sucks.
Whether it is on Twitter, blogs, or company collateral, there seems to be a recent trend to overemphasize statements about oneself or to put the company ahead of the customer. No matter the content type, this type of self-indulgence is weak. You’ll lose the reader because of braggadocios puffery. Remove the ‘I’ and ‘we’ from your marketing.
Jamie Glass, CMO and president, Artful Thinkers
4. Now obsolete
“You can have outstanding blogs when first published that ultimately turn (weak) because they are outdated.
“I rewrote this post about concussion-related light sensitivity, even though it was already ranking number one for several target keywords. I did it because: 1) it took too long to answer the question that most searchers were asking, which resulted in a high bounce rate and low average time on page. The original post wasted a lot of valuable real estate sharing info on general characteristics of post-concussion syndrome vs. the meat of the content related to light sensitivity AND 2) new research had been published, which I wanted to include to make it fresh and relevant. “
Greg Bullock, marketing manager, TheraSpecs
5. No duh
Stating the obvious. The world is round. A volcano is hot. Snakes can be poisonous. Then explaining in painful detail these obvious facts.
Holly Wolf, director of customer engagement, SOLO Laboratories Inc.
It’s trite. It’s content that tells me something obvious – an article on losing weight that recommends exercising regularly, or a piece with money-saving tips that says to cut out Starbucks from my morning routine.
6. Pointless intros
Some (weak) content can be found in a lot of good content. For instance, the first paragraph or two is (almost) always filler that never tells you anything informative and can be skipped on almost every article. Go ahead and try it.
7. No voice
There’s no excuse, no matter the topic, for dry content with no emotion or enthusiasm. You can’t convert without getting your readers excited. Instead, throw in personality and stories, create a voice, and be human.
9. All listicles, all the time
Ever read articles called ‘10 Ways That You Can Improve Your SEO,’ ‘5 Cool Things to Do in (City Name),’ ‘10 Healthy Diets That Make You Feel Good’? Those articles are boring. I get it – for a while people were obsessed with listicles. Yes, sometimes having a listicle on your blog isn’t a bad thing. But, if every article you post is a listicle, you just aren’t trying hard enough.
12. Poor or no sources
It fails to establish credibility – an important concept from journalism that most marketers haven’t yet mastered. Credibility means quoting nonpartisan subject matter experts, using data from trusted, objective, neutral sources, and not editorializing. Authoritative sources build credibility, credibility builds trust, and trust drives revenue.
13. Focus on length
You can find plenty of discussions debating the merits of 1,500-word posts vs. 500-word posts. Both sides promise that their ideal length gives a surefire way of keeping a reader on your page. But that misses the point entirely. Content should always fulfill its purpose and do it in a succinct, respectful way that doesn’t waste a reader’s time – regardless of if it’s 10 seconds or 10 minutes.
Shelby Rogers, content marketing strategist, Solodev
14. TL; DR (Too long, didn’t read)
15. Irrelevant
“Bad content is irrelevant for a specified audience. It doesn’t add value. It doesn’t entertain. It doesn’t answer a question.
“The hinge here is the audience. As the old saying goes, ‘One person’s trash is another’s treasure,’ so it’s important to continuously challenge assumptions, with data, analytics and even intuition.”
Frank Strong, owner, Sword and the Script Media
16. Negativity
“It’s focused on attacking other players in the market, trying to put the competition down and creating conflict to get attention.
“When Uber tries to break into a new market, it has launched aggressive campaigns against taxi drivers.
“We see competition as helping us grow the market … Just like a person could use an Uber sometimes, and other times a taxi. There’s room for everyone in this world.”
17. Check-off task
It is usually written exclusively to check off a task on the marketing team’s SEO plan. You can almost always tell when you come across a post that’s written to grab organic traffic from some keyword.
19. Generic
‘We should blog a lot because it’s good for SEO.’ The firms (who think that way) often end up publishing the same blog on their site as every one of their competitors … The recycled and sterile blog articles aren’t representative of anyone at their firm.
Spencer X Smith, instructor in social media at the University of Wisconsin & Rutgers University; author, ROTOMA: The ROI of Social Media Top of Mind
20. Word selection
The words are not compelling enough. This doesn’t mean use exciting vs. boring words but words that are appropriate for the content piece’s goal and the audience who would read it.
Laura Lopez, manager, content marketing, Notarize
21. Hard-to-read structure and exciting punctuation
“Anything with lots of passive voice, dependent clauses, and nonvarying sentence length.
“Anything with an emoticon. Just don’t. Lots of exclamation points. Makes me feel like I’m reading something written by a tween!”
Amanda Austin, founder and president, Little Shop of Miniatures
22. Boring images
It is not visually engaging. Instead of posting a photo of an event’s promotional poster or restaurant’s menu, try a picture of the event or menu item with engaging copy to support the promotion. Be descriptive but not salesy! Bad content might say, ‘Enjoy a delicious cocktail at this restaurant,’ versus ‘Tacos + margs make for the happiest of hours.’
23. Clunky design
“It’s clumsy or has a hard-to-understand layout. It’s published in an outdated manner so as to appear to be created with older technological limitations.
“It contains overused or inappropriate typefaces or boring titles … The color compliments are disturbing or irrelevant and clumsy graphics, especially, badly rendered gradients, poorly clipped out or cropped elements; low image quality such as with lack of attention to composition, lighting, styling or color, especially low resolution, blurry, or watermarked photos.”
25. Unfriendly mobile and meta
“Mobile thinking should be a no-brainer. And yet, people still publish content with huge blocks of text that are difficult to scan.
