I thought that, generally speaking, cyberpunk as a genre (using lowercase to avoid confusion with TTRPG) only asks that Ship of Theseus question about people who are hacking off whole, working parts of their bodies to replace them with cybernetics. The dude who lost a leg in an accident or needs a new heart isn't typically included in the discussion, and that's even if augments and stuff are in the cards at all.

From around the time of Trespasser’s release in 2015 to late 2017, the fourth Dragon Age was developed within an atmosphere that was apparently one of the most positive that some at BioWare had experienced. Despite this, the financial circumstances of the studio under EA led to a change so significant that it marked the end of the Project Joplin version of Dreadwolf. However, Joplin's development hit two major hiccups when its developers were pulled from the project to help finalize ME: Andromeda, and soon after, Anthem. The latter also led to Joplin's cancellation in late 2017, as the vast majority of its developers were shifted to Anthem. Mike Laidlaw, creative director for the franchise, left BioWare around this time, and Matthew Goldman, formerly art director for DA:I and Joplin, took his place.

I'm not going to spend time on being negative about veilguard after this, but I just need to take a moment to remember and mourn what could have been--its been so long, the exact nature of da4's cursed development is easy to forget. Its all hypothetical; I know. Am I arguing we would have gotten a perfect game? No, of course not--but it sounds hugely promising; and arguing that a) the build getting scrapped, b) losing huge swaths of the team who were passionate about the project, and then c) having more years of development bogged down with the idea of a live service game--arguing that all that led to a better game? That seems ridiculous to me.

Out Now: Dam Breakers

Hello everyone! I'm extremely excited (and, quite frankly, more than a bit nervous) to announce that I finished my fantasy romance novel Dam Breakers!

For the very TLDR-version: It is available here! Be sure to read the disclaimer below, though.

First of all, thank you! Everyone who reads my stories or likes them shows me that there is at least some interest in my mediocre writing. And even though the novel is not exactly like my stories here (more to that later), it gives me hope that you and other people might like it.

Now, for the actual novel!

Dam Breakers is the tale of Jared, a rather normal modern day college student, and Aleron, an apprentice mage living in a secluded tower with his teacher. One fateful day, they meet and are drawn into a maelstrom of magic, change and love - and dark secrets threatening to destroy everything they loved.

With over 120000 words, this is not only my longest story yet, but also my most carefully crafted one. I will attach an image of my Obsidian graph for the story at the end of the post.

Disclaimer:

As I have mentioned, it is a bit different from the stories I usually post here. First and foremost, it's a lot tamer. This novel isn't meant as a porn piece, but as an intriguing fantasy and romance tale. While there is love, desire and sex, of course, it's way more sparse and less explicit than, for example Closer Than Flesh.

It also features transformation themes, and the concept of change is one of the main focus points of the book, but, again, don't expect 500 pages full of transforming bodies because of it :)

And, finally, for a multitude of reasons, it does not contain AI generated images. I wouldn't be able to generate any that do the story justice, anyway.

Now that you know what not to expect, here are some things you MAY expect:

Transformation. Both in the sense of bodily changes but intriguing character development as well.

Gay Love. This is a story about two men from different worlds falling in love with each other, and their stony road to being together.

Magic. It's a fantasy story, and a truly enchanting one at that, with a fresh concept of magic and change.

Story. Last, but certainly not least, it's a good and interesting read, at least according to my opinion. Since I might be a bit biased here, let me tell you that my beta readers agree.

Teaser / Preview (mild spoilers)

Even though the weather was unstable, Jared enjoyed the journey through the vibrant spring land. It was a closeness to nature he had never experienced. Even back home with his parents, in rural Texas, the land had seemed different. Back there, the wilderness had been tamed decades if not centuries ago. There was no wonder, no adventure. Here, there were hills and forests, rivers and bogs, and who knew what else. It was as if Jared was seeing the world for the first time. Not to mention the smell. Jared could not remember a time when he had smelled the spring air like this.

In addition to the landscape, Jared's traveling companion also played a big part. Aleron was an intelligent and witty conversationalist, and Jared learned a lot about his new friend. They spoke of everything under the sun, and Jared told stories of his home, of modern inventions and the differences between this world and his. Even though Aleron was fascinated by his tales, he was also clearly skeptical about some of them, especially when it came to the more complex topics. That was only fair, though, as Jared himself had a hard time believing the fantastic stories of this world, even after having experienced some with his own eyes. Dragons, for example. It didn't matter how often Aleron recited what little information he had about those magnificent beasts, something in Jared resisted fully believing in them. He hoped that he would be able to see one of them for real - although Aleron repeatedly stressed how dangerous they were - in order to be able to fully believe in them.

While Aleron's world was certainly magical, it wasn't all like in the Lord of the Rings. There were, for example, no other humanoid races, as Jared learned. No elves, dwarves or orcs, at least to Aleron's knowledge, which, to be fair, mainly included the Kingdom of Myrthien. Although the Whispering Woods were not technically a part of Myrthien, and were generally considered wilderness, it was clear that they were no part of another nation either. The closest neighboring country to the Whispering Woods would either be the Golden Isles beyond the coast south of Eldoria or the Verdant Lands to the west. According to Aleron, the Verdant Lands couldn't really be considered a nation, too. It was more of a loose confederation of tribal communities, living in the characteristic dense forests of that region.

As Helena had promised, Luminara wasn't difficult to find. The capital of Myrthien was well known and if there was a sign post somewhere, it was sure to point to Luminara.

There was no shortage of smaller and bigger settlements, and about every third or fourth night they were able to sleep in beds. During the other nights, they made camp a bit off the road in order not to attract too much attention. It was one of those nights, about two weeks after they had left Eldoria, that Jared woke up in the middle of the night. Aleron, who was sleeping next to him, was moving in his sleep and occasionally made a sound, which had caused Flicker to gain a bit of distance to the sleeping man.

It was clear to Jared that his friend was dreaming, and he briefly considered waking him up from his nightmare. However, judging by the sounds, Jared began to suspect that Aleron was not having a nightmare but quite the opposite, although the dream seemed to be just as intense.

Quietly, he left the tent, careful not to wake the sleeping mage. Outside, he was greeted by the stars and a clear sky with an almost full moon. The campfire was almost dead, just a few embers and ashes were left. It was a quiet, peaceful night, and Jared decided to go to the nearby lake to drink. Aleron had never once shown a single sign of sexuality before, except for demonstrating a certain uneasiness around nudity and related topics. He never had commented on any woman - or man - in a suggestive way, so Jared had been half- convinced that this whole topic didn't have any relevance to the mage at all.

Of course, for his own reasons, Jared had avoided the subject as well, so, perhaps Aleron thought the same about him. Jared didn't mind that. As magical as this world was, he had yet to encounter a single sign of same-sex attraction. Perhaps this wasn't a thing here, biologically, or perhaps it was socially frowned upon, like in his world's medieval ages - or rural Texas, present day. In any case, there was absolutely no reason to bring that topic up, so he didn't. Not bringing up his sexuality was a sport he was very experienced in for 9 years straight now, after all.

As Jared neared the lake, he was feeling weird and tingly all over. It was not entirely unpleasant, but it stirred a vague memory in Jared. He had felt this feeling once before, but he couldn't quite recall when.

When he bent down to scoop some water into his hand, he stopped before his fingers touched the surface of the lake. The moon was bright, and Jared could see his reflection in the mirror-smooth water quite well. The only problem was that it was not him who was looking back at him.

Of course, there was a strong resemblance, but the details weren't right. His face looked somewhat stronger, his jawline a bit squarer. His hair a bit lighter and styled like the day he first stepped out of the mirror. On his chin, there was a short well-groomed beard even though he had shaved just last morning. It wasn't just his face, though. As he looked down on himself, he looked fitter than he should, as if he was visiting a gym regularly. In fact, the definition of muscle on his torso increased further, just as he was watching. Suddenly, the wonder was replaced by fear. He had felt that way before, and now he remembered when. It had been during his first visit to Aleron's world, when his body was 'destabilizing' as Aleron had put it. Given, the feeling had been stronger then, but it was definitely the same. And now, his body was changing again, and he was weeks of travel from the magic mirror.

Half-panicking, he sprinted back to the tent, not caring about being quiet anymore. Perhaps Aleron knew what to do! He ducked into the entrance and called out to the mage.

"Aleron, wake up!"

Almost immediately, the apprentice jolted awake. "Jared? What is wrong?"

"I... don't know, it's me. Look at me!"

After a few words of encouragement, Flicker began burning brighter, allowing them to see in the tent as well. Aleron looked at the half-naked Jared critically for a few moments before asking: "Okay... what am I looking for?"

"Can't you see? I'm..." However, as Jared looked down on himself, everything was fine again. He was looking at his plain old self, just as he should look like. The tingling feeling was gone, too.

"Oh." Jared felt incredibly stupid all of a sudden. "I... must have been imagining things."

One of the beautiful things about how our representative democratic constitutional republic works is the varying opinions. The array of views and theories, the proposals and approaches, from the patchwork of ideology America has attracted, gives us the opportunity to select the peak ideas of so many backgrounds and cultures. Many of the founders, Washington in particular, were against the formation of political parties. Because of such contrasting views this was unavoidable.

There used to be a dozen or more political parties in the U.S. Wigs, federalist, socialists, labor and others brought their perspectives and that of their constituency to Congress. This enabled a more zoomed in viewpoint of the issues across the nation.

Our Population in this country, and the planet as a whole, has BOOMED! With it, so have perspectives, concerns and opinions. It becomes harder and harder to address everyone’s needs when the diversity and size of those you’re representing is so vast. I’ll have to do more research into why exactly but some time between the beginning on the twentieth century and 1940’s the cluster of political parties that had existed before pretty much consolidated in the two that dominate now. From a business perspective this makes sense, you buy out your rival for less competition so you can set market value to your liking. But this is not a business, some will argue the federal government is the largest business on earth. It goes beyond the financial side to the personal level. These are policies and practices that have real world implications. That affect real people lives in droves.

This “big tent” approach sounds wonderful in theory, but when you start looking at the details it becomes much more complicated. The extremes of both sides tend to be the loudest voices while representing the smallest fraction of the party.

It has proven to be detrimental to the functioning or our democracy! With just the two sides, when one side is unhealthy, unhappy and unwilling to compromise the system bogs. This last House term being an excellent example. These MAGA obstructionist sinking the ship. Making an ass out of themselves and the entire Republican Party. A party that used to be a proud, noble group, resorted to lacking leadership for months, failed vote counts and the title as the least productive Congress in this century. The “big tent” approach for the Republican Party has the loudest voices being heard while the mature, responsible, more centered Republicans are lumped in with them.

The same can be true of the left to an extent. Dems will kick those with unacceptable behavior words or conduct to the curb though, which is a huge difference. Yet there are extremes on the left that don’t necessarily reflect the views of most Democrats.

This, winner take all grasp for power has lessened the effectiveness and stature of the political spheres in this country. So it’s down to the puppet on the left or the puppet in the right. A brown paper bag with a name on it.

So we have the two parties with the two extremes. One party despite its downfalls wants to govern. Wants to see progress. Wants to enact change.

The other is fighting culture wars, denying science, and tiptoeing a line on bigotry that is stepped over habitually. Their method as the “party of no” which they labeled themselves during the Obama years does NOTHING for the citizens of this country. The obstructionist approach of saying no because the other side proposed it is not helpful, if you’d call it governing at all! The “war on woke” and this owning the libs thing is some childish, useless sh*t! Cutting off your nose to spite your face. Can we have representatives who actually work together and find compromise to accomplish SOMETHING!!!?

Anyway… There’s only one healthy party in America right now. And it sure ain’t the Republican MAGA Party…

Vengeance cold or hot?

Randall, apart from Mike and Sulley of course, included Johhny in his vengeance, but at the same time he owed him a rescue from the bog men and was indebted to him

-Debt paid, thought Randall before his act of vengeance.

Johhny woke up in the basement of the Monsters inc factory with an exceptionally sore head chained to the floor, even before he could come to his senses he saw Randall in front of him holding in his four hands : a saw, a file and sandpaper. He immediately understood what Randall needed these items for. When he was young, he was often threatened by men who sawed off children's tusks and horns - today such a man came to Johhny.

-Come on Boggs, let's not do anything stupid and just talk about this - said a frightened Johhny

-Oh you're gonna talk alright! In fact : You're gonna beg - said through laughter Randall smiling with his teeth.

and he was doing it. Randall, without any qualms, sawed off Johhny first left then right - without any qualms, without any human and more monstrous emotions.

-What are you doing? - asked Johhny with a feigned laugh, trying not to cry in front of Randall -I am just taking care of your denstist care! - replied Randall -Someone ever tell you that your bottom two are coming out of your mouth? I'll fix that! Johhny began to pray, asking God to convert Randall, and Randall himself to stop painfully filing his teeth, but…. Even God will not convert Randall at this point in his life. Finally Randall let go of Johhny, the latter immediately started holding on to his leftover - horns. The horns what, had been a certain trademark for the Worthingtons, had been taken for one little college action, or maybe not so little?

the best way i can explain it is i try to use as little detail as possible to convey information. if you can master simplifying info down to the basics, drawing faces gets a lot easier (in my experience, at least!) these ⬇️ are probably my best examples of doing this. i’m really proud of them!! :D

i’m hugely inspired by artists like mike mignola, bruce timm, and genndy tartakovsky! hellboy is one of my favorite medias ever, i grew up watching the dc cartoons timm worked on and samurai jack, so those are my go-to artists whenever i feel like i’m stuck. they’re all insanely good at shape language and simplifying faces in an aesthetically pleasing + concise way. freaking awesome stuff ⬇️

side note: mignola worked as a production designer on disney’s atlantis: the last empire, so that’s another good character design/simplification source!

also, the dreaded anatomy studies :/ I H8 ANATOMY! but i rewatch sinix design’s videos for his crash courses on them OFTEN. he’s funny and charming, always sounds like he’s smiling when he talks, and explains everything in a way that doesn’t make my head want to explode. i highly recommend watching his vids :) ✏️🔗

all in all, it’s just important to not get bogged down by agonizing over details. i still struggle with this a LOT, so this is advice to myself as much as it is to anyone else.

Gonna critique the finale again so feel free to scroll on if you're sick of that...

Just wish the Coda scene hadn't been set so far in the future. I know it got a lot of people emotional but it did nothing for me and again I think a huge part of it was how little it gave Charlotte especially to work with in her own show, in an episode that already treated her like a minor character.

Again I'll say how the episode was depressing and frustrating enough, and I just would have liked more of an upbeat and positive note to go out on because the plague ghosts just wasn't enough for me. I love them but they're not our main guys. They're not who we're most concerned for.

Just think it would have been great to set the epilogue like two or three years later. Have it be the opening day of the hotel. Have it be Mia's third birthday. But basically don't have it be that Mike and Alison are old so we have to hide their faces because we don't want people to be "distracted" by the make up not being great. That's not a problem if you just don't age them up! Let us see them in their prime, let us see Alison no longer bogged down in post-partum exhaustion. Let us see Mia running about excited to see her "magic" aunts and uncles. Let us see Mike greeting them and trying to chat to them in his own way. Let us see the ghosts happy in the hotel because the decision to make them invisible to the audience is mean imo no matter how you dress it up.

Basically leave us with an actual happy family Christmas moment, an actual high note, an assurance that the Coopers will keep the ghosts in Mia's life. Show the audience the ghosts as a way to say "you are still welcome here to think of them and imagine what they will be up to" rather than keeping them from us and literally shutting us out the room. Leave us with something that's keeping in the fun and silly spirit of the show.

I think I come down so hard on it because as I rewatch the show it's pretty much perfect and it baffles me how they botched the ending - again, not in concept, but the execution.

For those who believe gay mike makes more sense/ ties up more loose ends, would you be satisfied if the show went the queer/unlabeled route (which IMO is more likely for a confused boy in the 80s than Mike using a specific term), but framed it in a way that could fit in with both gay Mike and bi Mike (especially if he has a heavy male lean) in which:

1) He genuinely did have a puppy crush on El in Season 1. He didn’t use El as a beard or go to her because he confused platonic feelings for romantic ones. They were romantic (lots of people who identify as gay now have had genuine early childhood crushes on the opposite sex, and obviously this would work if you see him as bi too).

2) In Season 2 he genuinely had a crush on both El and Will, but since he was already best friends with Will, he didn’t realize this. The Snowball dance was fully sincere. He wasn’t hiding behind El or anything.

3) In Season 3, during puberty is where everything went haywire. He found himself being more physically and romantically drawn to Will than El. Whether or not he has the hypothetical ability to be attracted to other girls is not even the point. It’s El or Will for Mike. And the point is that the gay feelings were overwhelming. Internalized homophobia was at all time high. Maybe he still liked El, but the puppy crush feelings were waning and he was realizing new things about himself.

4) In Season 4, his queer awakening becomes more pronounced, and he doesn’t like El like that anymore. He’s fully in love with Will AND checking out other boys. Again, Mike wouldn’t have to explain whether he’s ever liked girls before. The point is the queerness. The point is that he feels broken. The point is that he worries everyone will hate him.

With this, Mike could say he genuinely liked El at the beginning while also detailing his feelings for boys/Will in a way that can fit in with either theory. He doesn’t label himself specifically. The audience can interpret the nuances however they want. Mike’s sexuality still gets focus, so it’s not like he just moves from being El’s bf to Will’s. But it doesn’t bog itself down in the weeds of trying to put a concrete label to human sexuality. Many gay kids can relate to his story, many bi kids can relate to his story, and so can unlabeled kids. Thoughts on this?

A) Yes, I’m a gay Mike truther, but I’d be fully satisfied with something like this

B) I’m a bi Mike truther, but I’d be fully satisfied with something like this

C) I truly don’t care as long as he loves Will!

D) No, I’m a gay Mike truther and believe this would be a cop-out. He needs to be specifically, unquestionably gay for his story to be satisfying and make sense.

E) I’m a bi Mike truther and this wouldn’t be satisfying to me. Bi Mike is important to me and makes more sense with the narrative of the show.

F) I’d be fine with something like this, but with a few tweaks to make it make sense (say what those tweaks are!) But it’s overall fine for him to be unlabeled if his sexuality is given proper focus
